Newlyweds Anni Hindocha and Shrien Dewani jetted off to South Africa for their honeymoon after their traditional Indian wedding when disaster struck. After dining in one of the more dangerous outlying townships, the taxi they were in was carjacked. Shrien and the taxi driver escaped unharmed but Anni was shot and killed. But as investigators began to untangle what happened that night, nothing about the carjacking made sense — and attention quickly shifted to the people closest to Anni. Rumors, contradictions, shifting testimony, and international headlines soon turned a tragic murder into one of South Africa’s most controversial cases.

00:00:00.200 --> 00:00:02.759
Hi. I'm Tina, and I'm Rich. If there's one thing

2
00:00:02.799 --> 00:00:05.320
we've learned in over twenty years of marriage, it's that.

3
00:00:05.320 --> 00:00:07.000
Some days you'll feel like killing your.

4
00:00:06.839 --> 00:00:09.800
Wife and some days you'll feel like killing your husband.

5
00:00:10.080 --> 00:00:28.320
Welcome to love, Mary, Kill, Hey Rich, Hey Tina.

6
00:00:28.160 --> 00:00:28.600
How are you?

7
00:00:28.879 --> 00:00:30.719
I'm great. How are you doing well?

8
00:00:30.719 --> 00:00:35.359
I'm a woman in December, so I am frazzled. There's

9
00:00:35.399 --> 00:00:36.200
a lot going on.

10
00:00:36.280 --> 00:00:38.439
Oh, there is a lot going You have a lot

11
00:00:38.479 --> 00:00:39.799
to do, and I appreciate it.

12
00:00:39.920 --> 00:00:41.479
You have a lot to do too, I mean you're

13
00:00:41.520 --> 00:00:42.079
just as busy.

14
00:00:42.200 --> 00:00:44.399
Yeah, but I think being a woman in December is

15
00:00:44.880 --> 00:00:46.920
maybe a little more stressful for most women.

16
00:00:47.039 --> 00:00:50.079
I appreciate the acknowledgment of that. So it is freezing

17
00:00:50.119 --> 00:00:53.399
here in Michigan, like literally freezing, bitter. Got snow on

18
00:00:53.439 --> 00:00:55.560
the ground, which is kind of unusual for this time

19
00:00:55.600 --> 00:00:57.520
of the year. I think our last couple of Christmases

20
00:00:57.840 --> 00:00:58.520
have been green.

21
00:00:58.679 --> 00:01:00.520
Yeah, it doesn't look like it's going anywhere.

22
00:01:00.560 --> 00:01:01.840
Do you want to tell everyone what you got for

23
00:01:01.880 --> 00:01:02.399
your birthday?

24
00:01:02.840 --> 00:01:05.879
I got something very exciting and just in the niked time.

25
00:01:06.200 --> 00:01:07.280
I got a snowblower.

26
00:01:07.400 --> 00:01:10.799
Well, you got the snowblower because we saw like snow

27
00:01:10.840 --> 00:01:11.319
coming in.

28
00:01:11.560 --> 00:01:14.200
We did. I've held off for years, like I actually

29
00:01:14.239 --> 00:01:16.599
don't mind shoveling snow that much.

30
00:01:16.640 --> 00:01:19.000
But now that you've had another birthday and.

31
00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:23.239
Our kids are not around old, yes, it's that.

32
00:01:23.799 --> 00:01:25.640
I mean it was time for sure. Yeah, it's kind

33
00:01:25.680 --> 00:01:29.200
of big. And Mike caveat to you was we should

34
00:01:29.239 --> 00:01:31.359
absolutely get it. But it has to neatly fit in

35
00:01:31.400 --> 00:01:35.280
our garage, and so far, so far fit perfectly with

36
00:01:35.439 --> 00:01:36.079
the location.

37
00:01:36.439 --> 00:01:37.159
It's neatly right.

38
00:01:37.400 --> 00:01:39.719
I love a clear path to my car. I love

39
00:01:39.719 --> 00:01:43.000
it so much. And that so we're gonna work on that.

40
00:01:43.159 --> 00:01:45.120
We're gonna put a pin in that, and we're gonna

41
00:01:45.400 --> 00:01:48.400
circle back in the new year and find a new

42
00:01:48.599 --> 00:01:50.959
a new uh, a new place for that snowblower. But

43
00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:52.120
I'm really glad that you got it.

44
00:01:52.200 --> 00:01:53.959
Yeah, me too, worked worked really well.

45
00:01:54.560 --> 00:01:57.159
So it's been a while since we recorded, like maybe

46
00:01:57.200 --> 00:02:00.239
two weeks, and I think it was our last episode ode.

47
00:02:00.959 --> 00:02:04.159
You gave some sports predictions and some of our listeners

48
00:02:04.239 --> 00:02:05.879
went with your bets.

49
00:02:06.319 --> 00:02:08.199
They they lost.

50
00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:09.879
A lot of money on your beats. So what do

51
00:02:09.879 --> 00:02:10.719
you have to say for yourself?

52
00:02:10.719 --> 00:02:14.000
I don't want to talk about I was so far

53
00:02:14.159 --> 00:02:17.520
off on everything it was. I think I read a

54
00:02:17.599 --> 00:02:20.159
comment somebody said it was like the worst weekend in

55
00:02:20.520 --> 00:02:21.840
Detroit sports history.

56
00:02:21.919 --> 00:02:23.360
I don't think it really was, but.

57
00:02:23.520 --> 00:02:25.960
It was pretty bad. And I don't even really follow

58
00:02:26.039 --> 00:02:28.879
the Red Wings and the Pistons that closely, but all

59
00:02:28.919 --> 00:02:29.439
across the.

60
00:02:29.400 --> 00:02:33.159
Board since one Lions one. Yeah, they want to their

61
00:02:33.199 --> 00:02:34.120
last two games.

62
00:02:33.879 --> 00:02:37.400
No, they won Thursday, they lost last last Thursday was Thanksgiving.

63
00:02:38.120 --> 00:02:40.840
They're still in the playoff hunt, but it's not looking great.

64
00:02:40.919 --> 00:02:44.680
And who's who's at the top of the playoff hunt?

65
00:02:45.560 --> 00:02:47.719
No idea. I really haven't followed.

66
00:02:47.319 --> 00:02:50.240
It, you liar. You know, you just don't want to

67
00:02:50.240 --> 00:02:52.240
say it. Say it. Be a man, be a real man.

68
00:02:52.439 --> 00:02:56.039
You can do it. Chicago Bears, Yeah, Chicago Bears. Go Bears,

69
00:02:56.080 --> 00:02:58.919
the Bears. Yeah, so it's kind of exciting to be

70
00:02:59.080 --> 00:03:01.479
a Bear fe anyway though, I don't really care, but

71
00:03:01.680 --> 00:03:02.159
it's just.

72
00:03:02.159 --> 00:03:04.479
Nice root for your home, your hometown team.

73
00:03:04.680 --> 00:03:07.879
Yeah. We'll brace yourself because I have a compliment to

74
00:03:07.919 --> 00:03:09.599
give you, all right, I will brace One of your

75
00:03:09.639 --> 00:03:12.639
strengths is while you're watching the game, you can get

76
00:03:12.639 --> 00:03:15.800
really kind of grumpy, but you always shake it off

77
00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:18.879
very quickly, which I appreciate because I know some people

78
00:03:19.280 --> 00:03:21.439
go into Monday morning or whatever the day, you know,

79
00:03:21.479 --> 00:03:24.039
and they carry it with them. But you, I'd like

80
00:03:24.120 --> 00:03:24.680
to think.

81
00:03:24.439 --> 00:03:27.360
That I've matured a little bit over the years, just.

82
00:03:27.319 --> 00:03:29.080
A little think you've always been like that.

83
00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:32.919
Sometimes it's been worse than others. But I do shake

84
00:03:32.960 --> 00:03:34.520
it off rety quick, and I even try not to

85
00:03:34.560 --> 00:03:37.639
get too upset during the game when things are happening,

86
00:03:37.719 --> 00:03:38.520
but sometimes I can't.

87
00:03:38.719 --> 00:03:40.360
Well I don't really watch the games with you, so

88
00:03:40.400 --> 00:03:43.159
I don't really know. But when I see you when

89
00:03:43.159 --> 00:03:44.439
you come up for a snack.

90
00:03:44.240 --> 00:03:46.280
Thursday night, I was watching the game and I started

91
00:03:46.280 --> 00:03:49.199
to wonder if maybe you were hearing me from two

92
00:03:49.240 --> 00:03:51.120
I was in the basement watching the game and you

93
00:03:51.159 --> 00:03:53.759
were on our second floor, and I wouldn't have been

94
00:03:53.800 --> 00:03:55.599
surprised if you hurt me a couple of times.

95
00:03:55.759 --> 00:03:58.599
Well, sometimes you just send me a text and you're like,

96
00:03:58.639 --> 00:04:00.680
I can't believe this pall or blah blah blah was

97
00:04:00.680 --> 00:04:02.479
the colin NFL history blah blah.

98
00:04:02.599 --> 00:04:02.919
Yeah.

99
00:04:02.960 --> 00:04:05.800
So, speaking of controversy.

100
00:04:05.159 --> 00:04:07.919
Oh yeah, we generated a little bit of controversy on

101
00:04:07.960 --> 00:04:11.639
our last episode. It was the Carmela and David Knight episode,

102
00:04:12.080 --> 00:04:14.479
and at the end of it, I gave you a

103
00:04:14.599 --> 00:04:19.120
quiz that I came up with about ethical policing. Essentially,

104
00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:21.319
what I tried to do is give you some situations

105
00:04:21.959 --> 00:04:24.720
that were really difficult situations if you were and they

106
00:04:24.720 --> 00:04:28.839
were hypothetical situations. And a few people commented saying that

107
00:04:28.879 --> 00:04:29.839
they felt like we.

108
00:04:29.639 --> 00:04:32.639
Were excusing, we were being cottonheaded.

109
00:04:32.040 --> 00:04:35.279
In Yeah, that they were. We were excusing police brutality,

110
00:04:35.319 --> 00:04:38.560
and we really feel bad about that because we don't

111
00:04:38.600 --> 00:04:42.120
condone police brutality there at all. But I do think

112
00:04:42.160 --> 00:04:44.279
there are situations that police get in that are really

113
00:04:44.279 --> 00:04:46.079
difficult provide some ethic.

114
00:04:46.160 --> 00:04:47.160
I think that was our point.

115
00:04:47.360 --> 00:04:49.680
Yeah, exactly. These were not meant to be like easy,

116
00:04:50.399 --> 00:04:52.759
you know, answers to these. We have a lot of

117
00:04:52.800 --> 00:04:55.920
respect for law enforcement. There are definitely bad cops, but

118
00:04:55.959 --> 00:04:58.600
the vast majority of them are good cops. They're trying

119
00:04:58.639 --> 00:05:00.920
to do the right thing all the time. And we

120
00:05:00.959 --> 00:05:03.839
apologize if it came off sounding like we were condoning

121
00:05:03.920 --> 00:05:06.480
police brutality, because that's certainly not what we meant.

122
00:05:06.720 --> 00:05:10.279
Absolutely, I did post on apology and social media, and

123
00:05:10.519 --> 00:05:13.399
a lot of you voist your support for us and said,

124
00:05:13.439 --> 00:05:16.519
you know, even if you say something stupid every episode,

125
00:05:16.560 --> 00:05:18.839
we still love you and support you, and we really

126
00:05:18.920 --> 00:05:19.680
do appreciate that.

127
00:05:19.839 --> 00:05:20.360
Yeah, we do.

128
00:05:21.199 --> 00:05:23.319
I did bring you a snack. I was hoping we're

129
00:05:23.360 --> 00:05:26.319
going to South Africa today, where we've never been. You

130
00:05:26.360 --> 00:05:28.439
would think that I would have made you something elaborate,

131
00:05:28.519 --> 00:05:31.639
but I ran out of time as usual, But I

132
00:05:31.680 --> 00:05:34.319
made you popcorn with a South African twist.

133
00:05:34.480 --> 00:05:36.000
Oh interesting, just.

134
00:05:35.959 --> 00:05:38.399
Made up the regular way. Actually, you were so nice

135
00:05:38.439 --> 00:05:40.519
and made it for me so I could take a shower.

136
00:05:40.920 --> 00:05:44.600
But it's popcorn with paprika and garlic powder and salt

137
00:05:44.720 --> 00:05:47.240
and sugar and a little bit of cayenne pepper.

138
00:05:47.360 --> 00:05:47.839
Oh cool.

139
00:05:47.879 --> 00:05:48.839
I think it's pretty yummy.

140
00:05:48.879 --> 00:05:50.160
All right, I'm looking forward to trying it.

141
00:05:50.279 --> 00:05:57.240
Yeah, did you like the popwork?

142
00:05:57.360 --> 00:05:58.759
I did. I have to say I was a little

143
00:05:58.759 --> 00:06:01.759
skeptical because I don't know like popcorn with that type

144
00:06:01.800 --> 00:06:04.439
of spice on it. But yeah, it was really tasty.

145
00:06:04.519 --> 00:06:06.399
It is really good. And I can't really give you

146
00:06:06.439 --> 00:06:09.600
a recipe because I just kind of a little bit

147
00:06:09.600 --> 00:06:11.279
of this and a little bit of that. But it's

148
00:06:11.279 --> 00:06:14.959
supposed to be most heavily spiced with paprika, so it's

149
00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:18.160
like a teaspoon of paprika, half a teaspoon of garlic powder.

150
00:06:19.040 --> 00:06:21.600
I think I've put a teaspoon of salt and just

151
00:06:21.680 --> 00:06:25.240
a large pinchup cayenne, But you can make it to

152
00:06:25.279 --> 00:06:26.720
your own specifications.

153
00:06:26.759 --> 00:06:27.519
Well, thank you for that.

154
00:06:27.720 --> 00:06:31.480
You're welcome. We don't talk about what cases we're doing

155
00:06:31.519 --> 00:06:35.040
to each other, but it was a coincidence that you're next.

156
00:06:35.079 --> 00:06:38.040
You are also working on a South Africa case, and

157
00:06:38.079 --> 00:06:40.160
I feel a little guilty about my easy snack. So

158
00:06:40.199 --> 00:06:42.480
if you want, I will take one of your snacks.

159
00:06:42.519 --> 00:06:44.639
Oh be your South African recipe.

160
00:06:44.720 --> 00:06:45.600
I won't turn that down.

161
00:06:45.759 --> 00:06:48.519
Okay, So we will come back to South Africa in

162
00:06:48.600 --> 00:06:51.240
just a couple of weeks. It's a beautiful country that's

163
00:06:51.240 --> 00:06:53.439
been through a lot and I'm looking forward to telling

164
00:06:53.519 --> 00:06:56.360
you about this case today. I'm going to tell you

165
00:06:56.399 --> 00:06:59.959
this story of Annie Hondocha and Srian Deo. Wani. Want

166
00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:03.600
to thank Natasha, who is from South Africa, for recommending

167
00:07:03.600 --> 00:07:06.639
this case. And Natasha and I emailed a few times

168
00:07:06.639 --> 00:07:08.639
back and forth, and she gave me some really good

169
00:07:08.639 --> 00:07:11.920
insight into her country. Sometimes it's hard for us to

170
00:07:12.199 --> 00:07:15.759
know to really get to the nugget. It is a

171
00:07:15.839 --> 00:07:17.480
country when we're researching.

172
00:07:17.600 --> 00:07:19.319
Yeah, I think in the States, we kind of know,

173
00:07:19.519 --> 00:07:21.560
we know most of the regions of the United States

174
00:07:21.600 --> 00:07:23.839
to some degree, but when it comes to a country

175
00:07:23.879 --> 00:07:26.079
that we've never been to, it is difficult.

176
00:07:26.120 --> 00:07:29.079
It can be hard to really glean what a country

177
00:07:29.160 --> 00:07:30.800
is about. But before we get into the case, I

178
00:07:30.800 --> 00:07:33.959
did want to mention that our merch store is open again.

179
00:07:34.439 --> 00:07:38.839
If you go to bonfire dot com slash store, Sash

180
00:07:38.879 --> 00:07:43.879
Slash Love Dash Mary Dashkill Dash Store, this link will

181
00:07:43.920 --> 00:07:47.279
be in our show notes. It'll be open until December

182
00:07:47.319 --> 00:07:50.600
twenty second, which is a short window, but it will

183
00:07:50.639 --> 00:07:54.279
reopen again after that. I guess they bash print and

184
00:07:54.439 --> 00:07:57.480
we didn't realize actually that our store has been opened

185
00:07:57.480 --> 00:08:00.920
this whole time because we're not that's.

186
00:08:00.839 --> 00:08:03.680
Just not very detail oriented on some things, right.

187
00:08:03.800 --> 00:08:07.079
So anyway, if you are so, if you're interested, please

188
00:08:07.120 --> 00:08:09.839
go there. And we have some mugs, and we have

189
00:08:10.120 --> 00:08:13.360
sweatshirts and t shirts and we wear ours all the time,

190
00:08:13.439 --> 00:08:14.800
and I think they're pretty cute.

191
00:08:14.839 --> 00:08:16.439
They are, They're nice.

192
00:08:16.639 --> 00:08:20.199
I want to apologize in advance for butchering all of

193
00:08:20.240 --> 00:08:22.720
the names and places that we were about to talk about.

194
00:08:22.879 --> 00:08:24.839
I would also like to apologize for that.

195
00:08:25.319 --> 00:08:28.959
On Saturday night, November thirteenth, twenty ten, and the township

196
00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:32.360
of kaya Leicha on the southeastern outskirts of Cape Town,

197
00:08:32.759 --> 00:08:36.720
a poverty stricken area considered dangerous. After dark, a well

198
00:08:36.799 --> 00:08:40.879
dressed Indian man a foreign national, was seen nervously pacing

199
00:08:40.919 --> 00:08:44.399
outside a small house looking for help. He'd knocked on

200
00:08:44.440 --> 00:08:47.559
a few doors, but no one answered. Excuse me, Is

201
00:08:47.559 --> 00:08:50.440
there a nearby police station where I can report a carjacking?

202
00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:55.879
He asked the homeowner, Simbonila moto Kazi had just arrived

203
00:08:55.919 --> 00:08:59.279
home from driving a friend to the airport. Simbonilla was

204
00:08:59.320 --> 00:09:03.000
happy to help. He called his cousin, a local police officer.

205
00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:07.000
Within minutes, they arrived on the scene, but the tourist

206
00:09:07.039 --> 00:09:11.840
appeared confused, disoriented, and unable to adequately describe what had

207
00:09:11.879 --> 00:09:15.799
happened that evening. He told police his name was Shriann

208
00:09:15.840 --> 00:09:18.519
de Wanie. He was a thirty year old business man

209
00:09:18.559 --> 00:09:21.759
from Bristol, England, about two and a half hours from London.

210
00:09:22.559 --> 00:09:25.799
Schrienne and his wife of three weeks, Anni, had arrived

211
00:09:25.799 --> 00:09:28.519
in Capetown the previous day for the second leg of

212
00:09:28.519 --> 00:09:31.480
their honeymoon, staying in the pash five hundred pound per

213
00:09:31.600 --> 00:09:35.840
night waterfront Hotel, Cape Grace. Earlier that evening, they had

214
00:09:35.879 --> 00:09:38.759
embarked on a tour of Cape Town with a higher

215
00:09:38.840 --> 00:09:41.039
driver who took them through some of the more dangerous

216
00:09:41.080 --> 00:09:45.559
areas of the city's east side. According to Shrienn, at

217
00:09:45.600 --> 00:09:48.240
about ten forty five p m, while they were stopped

218
00:09:48.279 --> 00:09:52.519
at an intersection, two armed men wearing wide brimmed sun hats,

219
00:09:53.000 --> 00:09:56.360
despite it being dark, approached the vehicle, announced to the

220
00:09:56.440 --> 00:09:59.960
driver at gunpoint, forcing him into the back seat. They

221
00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:02.159
he drove around for forty five minutes, with the terrified

222
00:10:02.200 --> 00:10:05.440
newly weds in the back seat cowering in fear, until

223
00:10:05.480 --> 00:10:08.519
they forced Srian out of the vehicle, speeding off into

224
00:10:08.519 --> 00:10:12.080
the night with Annie still in the back seat. Sriann

225
00:10:12.080 --> 00:10:14.960
couldn't tell police where they'd been driving, nor could he

226
00:10:15.039 --> 00:10:19.159
recall the make or model of the vehicle. Police returned

227
00:10:19.159 --> 00:10:21.679
Schrian to the hotel at twelve forty five a m.

228
00:10:22.279 --> 00:10:26.279
While they searched for Annie through the night. Desperate Sharien

229
00:10:26.399 --> 00:10:30.360
called his family in Bristol, pleading for help. His brother

230
00:10:30.519 --> 00:10:33.879
Prayan immediately sent a photo of Anni to South African

231
00:10:33.919 --> 00:10:37.879
authorities and managed to obtain a backup of Scharenn's BlackBerry,

232
00:10:38.360 --> 00:10:42.399
pulling the contact list, including the number of the taxi driver,

233
00:10:42.679 --> 00:10:46.360
Zola Tango. He even reached out to a private detective

234
00:10:46.399 --> 00:10:49.840
for help finding Annie, but they declined because the investigation

235
00:10:50.000 --> 00:10:52.440
was too fresh and they said that they might get

236
00:10:52.440 --> 00:10:53.639
in the way of the police.

237
00:10:54.159 --> 00:10:56.000
Prayan was really proactive on this.

238
00:10:56.440 --> 00:10:59.360
Annie was loved by everyone and at this point everyone

239
00:10:59.440 --> 00:11:01.840
was dead, stated to wanted to do anything that they

240
00:11:01.879 --> 00:11:05.120
could to find her. The next morning, a woman called

241
00:11:05.120 --> 00:11:07.879
police to report a suspicious gray mini van that had

242
00:11:07.879 --> 00:11:10.559
been parked across from her house next to a field

243
00:11:10.600 --> 00:11:14.240
all night. Curious residents had gathered around the vehicle and

244
00:11:14.320 --> 00:11:18.200
were peering through the windows. When police arrived, they found

245
00:11:18.279 --> 00:11:21.360
blood dripping from the van, pulling on the ground below.

246
00:11:22.279 --> 00:11:25.360
The doors were unlocked. A woman lay sprawled across the

247
00:11:25.399 --> 00:11:29.240
back seat. She was young, covered in blood, and tragically

248
00:11:29.320 --> 00:11:33.120
already dead. The victim was identified as twenty eight year

249
00:11:33.120 --> 00:11:37.080
old newlywed Annie Hindocha. She had been shot once in

250
00:11:37.120 --> 00:11:40.000
the neck with a nine millimeter pistol, which was found

251
00:11:40.039 --> 00:11:43.399
on the floor of the van. A bloody fingerprint and

252
00:11:43.480 --> 00:11:46.000
thumb print were found on the left funder of the van.

253
00:11:46.840 --> 00:11:50.399
The owner of the prince. Twenty five year old Koalila Mengeni,

254
00:11:50.919 --> 00:11:53.360
was found and arrested not far from where the van

255
00:11:53.440 --> 00:11:57.399
had been discovered, at his grandmother's house. When officers arrived,

256
00:11:57.399 --> 00:12:00.240
he was fast asleep. He'd been out parting and till

257
00:12:00.240 --> 00:12:03.120
the early morning hours and brought two women and a

258
00:12:03.159 --> 00:12:05.840
man home with him. All four were asleep in his

259
00:12:05.879 --> 00:12:09.200
bed under the mattress. The police found a cell phone.

260
00:12:09.759 --> 00:12:13.200
Mngeni said it was the taxi driver's phone. Zola tango

261
00:12:14.080 --> 00:12:18.039
Ani's diamond bracelet was also in his possession. Police dragged

262
00:12:18.080 --> 00:12:20.559
him out of the house and placed him under arrest.

263
00:12:21.080 --> 00:12:24.679
He lied and said a man named Mawiwi was his accomplice,

264
00:12:24.960 --> 00:12:29.039
but that man had an alibi. Days later, he admitted

265
00:12:29.039 --> 00:12:33.159
to his lie and gave the name Miziwa Madoda lenox

266
00:12:33.240 --> 00:12:34.679
Quabe to police.

267
00:12:35.399 --> 00:12:37.200
So this new name that he gave to the police,

268
00:12:37.240 --> 00:12:41.159
he was saying that was someone who had been his accomplice.

269
00:12:41.559 --> 00:12:44.759
Okay, Maziwa ma Doda, can you say.

270
00:12:44.559 --> 00:12:48.080
That Maziewa Mandoda very good?

271
00:12:48.320 --> 00:12:51.720
South Africa spans more than a million square kilometers or

272
00:12:51.879 --> 00:12:55.480
about four hundred and seventy thousand square miles, making it

273
00:12:55.559 --> 00:12:58.840
nearly twice the size of Texas, with a population of

274
00:12:58.919 --> 00:13:03.360
roughly sixty five million people. It's a country of striking contrasts,

275
00:13:03.720 --> 00:13:08.559
shaped by a long history, bass geography, and deep cultural diversity.

276
00:13:09.440 --> 00:13:12.720
Cape Town, home to about five million residents, sits on

277
00:13:12.799 --> 00:13:16.159
the southwestern tip of the country and serves as South

278
00:13:16.200 --> 00:13:21.120
Africa's legislative capital or Parliament meets. Often described as one

279
00:13:21.120 --> 00:13:23.519
of the most beautiful cities in the world, it is

280
00:13:23.600 --> 00:13:27.600
framed by the flat topped grandeur of Table Mountain and

281
00:13:27.679 --> 00:13:31.360
the Atlantic Ocean, and is known for its dramatic coastline,

282
00:13:31.600 --> 00:13:37.480
historic neighborhoods, and vibrant multicultural communities. Its modern landscape is

283
00:13:37.519 --> 00:13:41.000
still deeply shaped by the legacy of apartheid, the racial

284
00:13:41.039 --> 00:13:45.279
segregation system enforced from nineteen forty eight to nineteen ninety four.

285
00:13:46.039 --> 00:13:50.360
Under apartheid, non white residents were forcibly removed from central

286
00:13:50.399 --> 00:13:56.080
districts and pushed into outlying townships like Kayalichia, creating stark

287
00:13:56.240 --> 00:14:01.120
racial and economic divides that remain visible today. Although apartheid

288
00:14:01.240 --> 00:14:05.279
ended with South Africa's first democratic elections in nineteen ninety four,

289
00:14:05.960 --> 00:14:10.440
its influence continues to shape the patterns of wealth opportunity, housing,

290
00:14:10.600 --> 00:14:14.080
in safety throughout the city. Since the end of apartheid

291
00:14:14.240 --> 00:14:17.480
in nineteen ninety four, South Africa has worked to right

292
00:14:17.559 --> 00:14:22.639
the wrongs of its past by dismantling discriminatory laws, expanding

293
00:14:22.679 --> 00:14:28.159
political representation, and creating programs aimed at improving housing, education,

294
00:14:28.600 --> 00:14:33.759
and economic opportunity for communities long denied them. The progress

295
00:14:33.759 --> 00:14:37.279
has been uneven, but the country has made meaningful strides

296
00:14:37.559 --> 00:14:41.919
towards building a more inclusive and democratic society, an ongoing

297
00:14:41.960 --> 00:14:45.960
effort to repair the deep inequalities left behind and move

298
00:14:46.080 --> 00:14:50.039
toward a more just future. Today, Cape Town is a

299
00:14:50.039 --> 00:14:53.919
major tourism hub, drawing millions with attractions like Table Mountain,

300
00:14:54.360 --> 00:14:58.639
Robin Island, Camps Bay and Cape Winelands. Tourism fuels a

301
00:14:58.639 --> 00:15:01.399
significant part of the local act economy, even as the

302
00:15:01.440 --> 00:15:05.399
city continues to navigate deep inequalities and safety concerns that

303
00:15:05.519 --> 00:15:09.720
vary widely from one area to another. Despite these contrasts,

304
00:15:09.879 --> 00:15:13.840
Cape Town remains a vibrant cultural and economic center, a

305
00:15:13.919 --> 00:15:17.759
place with extraordinary beauty that continues to welcome visitors from

306
00:15:17.799 --> 00:15:21.600
around the world. But despite its beauty, South Africa's murder

307
00:15:21.679 --> 00:15:24.600
rate is among the highest in the world. In twenty

308
00:15:24.639 --> 00:15:28.080
twenty four, the country recorded twenty six thousand, two hundred

309
00:15:28.159 --> 00:15:31.759
thirty two homicides, about forty two murders per one hundred

310
00:15:31.759 --> 00:15:34.919
thousand people, or roughly fifty two a day in a

311
00:15:35.039 --> 00:15:39.240
nation of sixty two million. For comparison, the United States

312
00:15:39.399 --> 00:15:43.519
saw about eighteen thousand, eight hundred murders in twenty twenty two,

313
00:15:43.600 --> 00:15:46.240
a rate of five point six per one hundred thousand

314
00:15:46.240 --> 00:15:50.399
in a population more than five times larger. This means

315
00:15:50.399 --> 00:15:53.240
that South Africa's murder rate is nearly eight times higher

316
00:15:53.320 --> 00:15:56.200
than in the US. Much of this violence is driven

317
00:15:56.240 --> 00:16:01.240
by severe inequality, entrenched gaining activity, particularly around Cape Town,

318
00:16:01.879 --> 00:16:06.039
strained policing resources, historical trauma left by apartheid, and high

319
00:16:06.159 --> 00:16:11.960
levels of interpersonal and alcohol related violence. Kaya Leichia, where

320
00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:15.000
Anni's body was found, is one of South Africa's largest

321
00:16:15.000 --> 00:16:19.120
and fastest growing townships, located on the Cape Flats about

322
00:16:19.200 --> 00:16:23.519
thirty kilometers from Cape Town. Established in the nineteen eighties

323
00:16:23.559 --> 00:16:27.960
under apartheid, it was created to segregate black South Africans,

324
00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:32.039
and it grew rapidly as people were forcibly relocated there. Today,

325
00:16:32.159 --> 00:16:35.759
kaya Leicha is known for its vibrant community resilience and

326
00:16:35.759 --> 00:16:40.639
cultural richness, but it also faces major challenges, including poverty,

327
00:16:40.799 --> 00:16:44.799
unemployment rates as high as fifty percent, overcrowding, and limited

328
00:16:44.879 --> 00:16:48.240
access to services. Most people live in shanties made from

329
00:16:48.399 --> 00:16:52.919
discarded materials including cardboard, tar, paper, and scraps of metal

330
00:16:53.000 --> 00:16:58.440
and wood, without electricity, sewage, or running water. Despite these difficulties,

331
00:16:58.480 --> 00:17:02.559
it has a strong entrepreneur dirial spirit, active civic groups,

332
00:17:02.559 --> 00:17:05.480
and a growing arts and food scene that reflects its

333
00:17:05.519 --> 00:17:07.920
residents creativity and determination.

334
00:17:09.240 --> 00:17:13.119
Vinoude Hindocha Ani's father descended from a family of Indian

335
00:17:13.160 --> 00:17:17.480
traders who had lived for generations in Uganda's Indian community.

336
00:17:18.079 --> 00:17:21.599
But when Idi Amin expelled Asians from Uganda in nineteen

337
00:17:21.680 --> 00:17:25.799
seventy two, Vinoude, then twenty three, fled to Austria with

338
00:17:25.880 --> 00:17:29.279
his parents and four siblings with only fifty five British

339
00:17:29.359 --> 00:17:32.200
pounds to their name. They lived in a tent for

340
00:17:32.279 --> 00:17:36.359
months until Sweden offered them visas. They rebuilt their life

341
00:17:36.359 --> 00:17:39.599
in the Swedish town of Mariastad, working at a farm,

342
00:17:39.680 --> 00:17:43.279
picking strawberries to support their family and learning the language

343
00:17:43.319 --> 00:17:47.720
of their new country. Mariastad is a small, charming, picturesque

344
00:17:47.759 --> 00:17:51.000
town in south central Sweden, on the shores of Lake Veneran,

345
00:17:51.359 --> 00:17:55.400
where summers are spent lounging along the lake's shimmering edge.

346
00:17:55.440 --> 00:17:58.680
With a population of roughly twenty five thousand people, it's

347
00:17:58.759 --> 00:18:03.160
known for its historic town center, peaceful waterfront, and strong

348
00:18:03.240 --> 00:18:07.920
sense of community. Families often stay for generations, captivated by

349
00:18:07.960 --> 00:18:12.079
the peaceful beauty and the friendly people. The Hindocha family

350
00:18:12.119 --> 00:18:15.880
felt welcomed in Maria Stad, and despite looking different, they

351
00:18:15.920 --> 00:18:20.160
blended seamlessly into the community. Vinoude went to school and

352
00:18:20.200 --> 00:18:24.160
became an electrical engineer for Electrolux before he launched his

353
00:18:24.240 --> 00:18:29.119
own business selling electrical equipment supplies. He met his wife, Nilam,

354
00:18:29.319 --> 00:18:33.160
also a Ugandan refugee, in nineteen seventy six. It was

355
00:18:33.200 --> 00:18:36.480
a perfect match, where he was shy and pedantic, she

356
00:18:36.680 --> 00:18:40.960
was warm and outgoing. Together they happily raised three children.

357
00:18:41.240 --> 00:18:45.359
Ami was born in nineteen seventy seven. Anni Nina followed

358
00:18:45.400 --> 00:18:48.319
five years later in March nineteen eighty two, and their

359
00:18:48.359 --> 00:18:52.279
younger brother, Aniche arrived in nineteen eighty eight. They grew

360
00:18:52.359 --> 00:18:54.720
up in a close knit family along with their cousins

361
00:18:54.759 --> 00:18:58.640
who lived nearby. Nilam and Vinode encouraged their children to

362
00:18:58.640 --> 00:19:02.160
stay connected to their Indian roots and to speak Gujarati

363
00:19:02.200 --> 00:19:06.119
at home. Later, when Annie chose to marry in Mumbai,

364
00:19:06.200 --> 00:19:09.359
it felt like a meaningful affirmation of their Indian heritage

365
00:19:09.640 --> 00:19:14.519
and it made her parents very proud. Annie was intelligent, charismatic,

366
00:19:14.720 --> 00:19:19.920
fashionable and beautiful. Her friends called her Indian Barbie Vineaude

367
00:19:19.960 --> 00:19:22.440
doted on his youngest daughter, buying her a new car

368
00:19:22.559 --> 00:19:25.039
and giving her a generous down payment for an apartment

369
00:19:25.079 --> 00:19:30.160
in Stockholm after she graduated from college with an engineering degree.

370
00:19:30.279 --> 00:19:32.920
In two thousand and six, when Nilam was diagnosed with

371
00:19:32.960 --> 00:19:36.200
stomach cancer, Annie took a year off from her studies

372
00:19:36.240 --> 00:19:39.400
to nurse her mother back to health. Later, she went

373
00:19:39.440 --> 00:19:43.799
to work for the telecommunications giant Eriksson as a logistics manager.

374
00:19:44.880 --> 00:19:47.559
Once in her mid twenties, Annie started thinking about finding

375
00:19:47.640 --> 00:19:51.759
a partner and starting a family. She admired AMI's marriage

376
00:19:51.799 --> 00:19:55.559
and adored her niece and nephew. She began spending weekends

377
00:19:55.559 --> 00:19:58.839
in London, staying with friends and family because she wanted

378
00:19:58.839 --> 00:20:02.359
to marry someone of Indian Her prospects were better there.

379
00:20:03.519 --> 00:20:05.359
We'll be back after a break.

380
00:20:12.359 --> 00:20:15.880
Annie's aunt, who prided herself on her match making skills

381
00:20:16.000 --> 00:20:19.960
met Srian Dewani and was impressed by his good looks, education,

382
00:20:20.160 --> 00:20:23.119
and charm. She quickly decided that he would be a

383
00:20:23.160 --> 00:20:26.799
perfect match for her niece, and she was right. When

384
00:20:26.799 --> 00:20:29.240
they met for the first time for coffee at Starbucks

385
00:20:29.279 --> 00:20:32.640
in September two thousand and nine. It wasn't exactly love

386
00:20:32.680 --> 00:20:36.319
at first sight, but there was mutual interest. They agreed

387
00:20:36.319 --> 00:20:39.480
to see each other again. Their first official date was

388
00:20:39.519 --> 00:20:43.200
to see Lion King, after which Shriann sent Annie flowers

389
00:20:43.359 --> 00:20:47.559
every day at work. In November, Annie introduced her new

390
00:20:47.599 --> 00:20:51.079
boyfriend to her parents. He touched their feet in a

391
00:20:51.160 --> 00:20:56.400
gesture of humility and respect, which surprised and impressed them.

392
00:20:56.480 --> 00:20:59.480
If any current or future suitors of our children are listening,

393
00:20:59.680 --> 00:21:05.440
please don't ever ever touch might be U nor Minevanoude

394
00:21:05.480 --> 00:21:08.200
had checked into Shrian's background, and he was pleased with

395
00:21:08.279 --> 00:21:11.319
what he learned, except for one thing. He'd abruptly called

396
00:21:11.319 --> 00:21:15.240
off his previous relationship with a millionaire's daughter after they'd

397
00:21:15.240 --> 00:21:19.240
had a lavish engagement party in London. Srian addressed the

398
00:21:19.279 --> 00:21:21.759
issue with Vanoude, and he told him to ask him

399
00:21:21.799 --> 00:21:24.759
any question he wanted, but his future father in law

400
00:21:24.839 --> 00:21:27.119
told him that as long as he loved Anni and

401
00:21:27.200 --> 00:21:29.640
promised to take good care of her, that was all

402
00:21:29.720 --> 00:21:33.160
he needed to hear, and Sriann agreed, and Beanoude gave

403
00:21:33.240 --> 00:21:36.880
his blessing. Ani and Sriann found that they came from

404
00:21:36.920 --> 00:21:42.160
remarkably similar backgrounds. Both were Hindu, descended from Gujarati families

405
00:21:42.440 --> 00:21:45.599
and were members of India's merchant class who had escaped

406
00:21:45.799 --> 00:21:51.079
Edia means Uganda and rebuilt their lives. Suryan's father, Prakash,

407
00:21:51.119 --> 00:21:54.079
had moved to Kenya, where his own parents had settled

408
00:21:54.119 --> 00:21:58.160
after leaving Gujarat, before moving to Bristol, England, where he

409
00:21:58.200 --> 00:22:02.480
studied pharmacology. He opened a pharmacy and later expanded into

410
00:22:02.519 --> 00:22:06.640
a successful chain of care homes for the elderly. He

411
00:22:06.720 --> 00:22:11.839
and his wife Sheila raised three children, Praying, Shriann and Rhea.

412
00:22:12.480 --> 00:22:17.400
With a strong emphasis on discipline, education and professional success.

413
00:22:17.880 --> 00:22:20.640
The Dewanies worked hard to build a comfortable life in

414
00:22:20.640 --> 00:22:26.319
the UK. From a young age, Shrian was known as intelligent, meticulous,

415
00:22:26.559 --> 00:22:31.000
and introverted, the quieter sibling sandwich between a confident older

416
00:22:31.000 --> 00:22:35.319
brother and a younger sister. Teachers and classmates described him

417
00:22:35.359 --> 00:22:39.160
as bright and studious, someone who took pride in appearances

418
00:22:39.240 --> 00:22:44.000
and excelled academically. After attending a prestigious prep school, he

419
00:22:44.079 --> 00:22:47.640
earned an accounting degree from the University of Manchester, then

420
00:22:47.680 --> 00:22:51.079
taught English and math and Ghana before joining the elite

421
00:22:51.279 --> 00:22:55.599
accounting firm Deloitte in London. Within a year, he left

422
00:22:55.599 --> 00:22:58.440
to help his older brother pray In, run the rapidly

423
00:22:58.480 --> 00:23:03.720
growing family company PSP Healthcare. He became a millionaire before

424
00:23:03.839 --> 00:23:08.079
turning thirty. Sriann had grown into a friendly and outgoing man,

425
00:23:08.440 --> 00:23:11.119
though some felt he carried himself with an air of

426
00:23:11.160 --> 00:23:15.519
superiority and flaunted his wealth. He enjoyed the finer things

427
00:23:15.519 --> 00:23:17.920
in life and could be a bit flashy at times,

428
00:23:18.240 --> 00:23:20.960
but he was affable, good humored, and generous with his

429
00:23:21.000 --> 00:23:25.039
friends and family. Sriann and Annie entered into an exclusive,

430
00:23:25.119 --> 00:23:29.119
long term relationship, but the distance between them sometimes created

431
00:23:29.160 --> 00:23:32.839
tension and even led to a brief breakup. So remember

432
00:23:32.880 --> 00:23:36.440
Annie is living in Stockholm and he's in London. So

433
00:23:36.519 --> 00:23:39.759
Schriann was an attractive, well groomed man who dressed impeccably,

434
00:23:39.880 --> 00:23:43.240
but friend said Annie sometimes teased him behind his back

435
00:23:43.279 --> 00:23:46.799
about his teeth. His two front teeth were slightly longer

436
00:23:46.839 --> 00:23:50.079
than the others, giving him what she jokingly referred to

437
00:23:50.240 --> 00:23:52.240
as a rabbit like appearance.

438
00:23:52.440 --> 00:23:53.440
Not very nice.

439
00:23:54.000 --> 00:23:56.400
He is a handsome man, but once you see that,

440
00:23:56.480 --> 00:24:00.359
you're like, oh, yeah, he kind of does Srian donni.

441
00:24:00.440 --> 00:24:02.920
He did not believe in sex before marriage. It's not

442
00:24:03.000 --> 00:24:05.480
clear if this caused problems for the couple, but her

443
00:24:05.519 --> 00:24:08.720
cousin said that she grew frustrated that he wasn't more

444
00:24:09.079 --> 00:24:12.839
openly affectionate with her. When Annie mentioned it to her father,

445
00:24:13.160 --> 00:24:15.240
he told her it was a good thing that Schrian

446
00:24:15.359 --> 00:24:19.359
respected her. In early twenty ten, Annie quit her job

447
00:24:19.359 --> 00:24:22.680
at Ericsson, sold her apartment in Stockholm, and moved to

448
00:24:22.720 --> 00:24:26.200
London to be closer to Schriann. She and her cousin

449
00:24:26.440 --> 00:24:31.079
her best friend Sneha rented an apartment together, savoring what

450
00:24:31.160 --> 00:24:35.200
felt like their final opportunity of carefree single living before

451
00:24:35.200 --> 00:24:39.680
both women married and started families of their own. When

452
00:24:39.680 --> 00:24:42.920
the Hendocha and Dewani families met in person in May

453
00:24:43.000 --> 00:24:47.039
twenty ten, a Node, successful in his own right, found

454
00:24:47.079 --> 00:24:51.240
himself intimidated by the Dewani's vast wealth, but he was

455
00:24:51.279 --> 00:24:55.279
impressed by their warmth and charm. When the Hendojas were

456
00:24:55.279 --> 00:24:58.680
presented with a gift from the dewanis a Pooja Thali.

457
00:24:59.240 --> 00:25:02.839
They were surprised. It is a deeply symbolic gesture in

458
00:25:02.839 --> 00:25:07.000
Indian culture. It signaled the Dewanie's acceptance of the match

459
00:25:07.160 --> 00:25:11.240
that the family considered the match all but sealed. Annie

460
00:25:11.279 --> 00:25:15.079
herself seemed surprised by the gift. She and Shrian hadn't

461
00:25:15.079 --> 00:25:19.039
even discussed marriage yet. The pooja sally made it feel

462
00:25:19.079 --> 00:25:22.519
as though she'd already accepted a proposal. It seems like

463
00:25:22.559 --> 00:25:26.279
this is maybe the last step of courting before the marriage.

464
00:25:26.319 --> 00:25:28.240
He was yeah.

465
00:25:28.279 --> 00:25:31.400
The gesture sent her into a tailspin, and she briefly

466
00:25:31.440 --> 00:25:35.279
considered ending the relationship altogether. She wasn't sure that she

467
00:25:35.400 --> 00:25:38.640
was ready for a long term future with Shrian, or

468
00:25:38.720 --> 00:25:42.039
if she wanted one at all. But in June, Sriann

469
00:25:42.079 --> 00:25:44.720
whisked Annie away in a private plane to Paris for

470
00:25:44.839 --> 00:25:49.079
a proposal she suspected was coming, especially after the Pooja

471
00:25:49.160 --> 00:25:54.319
Sali gesture from his family to hers. Shriann went all out.

472
00:25:54.480 --> 00:25:58.640
He bought Annie a new designer dress, Christian de Were shoes,

473
00:25:58.680 --> 00:26:01.599
and at the hotel rist It's, a waiter lifted a

474
00:26:01.680 --> 00:26:05.200
silver clothes to reveal a single red rose and a

475
00:26:05.279 --> 00:26:08.960
twenty five thousand pound engagement.

476
00:26:10.240 --> 00:26:11.519
Engagement engagement.

477
00:26:13.000 --> 00:26:15.480
They'd been together for less than a year, and while

478
00:26:15.519 --> 00:26:18.480
Annie said yes, hopeful for what her future might bring,

479
00:26:18.960 --> 00:26:22.200
she still carried quiet doubts about the pace at which

480
00:26:22.240 --> 00:26:23.119
everything was moving.

481
00:26:23.400 --> 00:26:25.240
It reminds me a lot of my proposal to.

482
00:26:25.200 --> 00:26:30.039
You, other than the private plane to Paris, and other

483
00:26:30.119 --> 00:26:33.119
than the designer clothing, and they expected.

484
00:26:32.920 --> 00:26:35.519
In what way does it remind you of our engagement? Really?

485
00:26:35.720 --> 00:26:39.200
No, other than all that stuff you just said.

486
00:26:39.039 --> 00:26:42.880
Well, it was a lovely engagement. Yours was Ours was,

487
00:26:43.240 --> 00:26:45.680
but there's was too. I mean that's you know, sounds

488
00:26:45.759 --> 00:26:49.759
very nice. Some grand gestures there. It was funny because

489
00:26:50.440 --> 00:26:53.599
I was a surprise, and I think that Shmiann had

490
00:26:53.720 --> 00:26:57.079
her cousin or someone packed like her toilet trees and things.

491
00:26:57.079 --> 00:27:00.240
So never surprise a woman when she does not out

492
00:27:00.319 --> 00:27:04.839
for skin and hair care products, right for sure. Despite

493
00:27:04.839 --> 00:27:07.480
her doubts, Annie and Shriann were married under a full

494
00:27:07.519 --> 00:27:10.200
moon on October twenty ninth, twenty ten, in front of

495
00:27:10.240 --> 00:27:15.079
three hundred guests near Mumbai, India, onlike po Wai. Annie

496
00:27:15.079 --> 00:27:18.480
looked stunning wearing a custom green and gold sorry bathed

497
00:27:18.519 --> 00:27:21.200
in jewels as she was carried down the aisle by

498
00:27:21.200 --> 00:27:25.079
her brother, uncle and two cousins. Sriann waited for her

499
00:27:25.119 --> 00:27:27.720
at the altar behind a curtain, wearing a beige turban

500
00:27:27.839 --> 00:27:31.160
and suit. It was a grand three day celebration with

501
00:27:31.440 --> 00:27:37.119
horse drawn carriages, elephants, beautiful flowers, and elaborate costumes. The

502
00:27:37.160 --> 00:27:40.440
couple appeared to radiate joy, but some guests felt that

503
00:27:40.480 --> 00:27:44.920
Annie seemed strangely detached from the festivities, despite having spent

504
00:27:45.000 --> 00:27:48.519
three months in India planning every detail of the wedding herself.

505
00:27:49.440 --> 00:27:52.759
Over the three days, there were five traditional ceremonies and

506
00:27:52.920 --> 00:27:56.839
three banquets. The affair is said to cost about two

507
00:27:56.960 --> 00:27:58.240
hundred thousand pounds.

508
00:27:58.640 --> 00:28:01.000
Someday I would like to be invited to an elaborate

509
00:28:01.039 --> 00:28:03.880
Indian wedding, because I just think it sounds so amazing.

510
00:28:05.400 --> 00:28:08.720
The wedding in India was not legally binding. The couple

511
00:28:08.759 --> 00:28:11.480
had planned to make the marriage official with a civil

512
00:28:11.519 --> 00:28:16.519
ceremony after their honeymoon. Because the marriage was never made official,

513
00:28:16.839 --> 00:28:21.039
Shrian nor the Dawanes had legal financial obligation to Annie's

514
00:28:21.039 --> 00:28:24.880
family or her estate after her death. And that is

515
00:28:24.920 --> 00:28:28.720
why I titled the episode Annie Hindocha and Sriandawani. Because

516
00:28:29.279 --> 00:28:34.119
their marriage was not official interesting, the newlyweds waited two

517
00:28:34.160 --> 00:28:37.640
weeks before embarking on their honeymoon. Shrian planned the trip

518
00:28:38.119 --> 00:28:41.799
wanting to surprise Annie. He told friends that he chose

519
00:28:41.839 --> 00:28:46.319
South Africa because it represented their initials. There are some

520
00:28:46.400 --> 00:28:50.319
reports that Annie was disappointed with the choice of South Africa,

521
00:28:50.400 --> 00:28:53.799
but she went along with it. They left for South

522
00:28:53.839 --> 00:28:56.880
Africa on November eight, twenty ten, and spent four days

523
00:28:56.920 --> 00:29:01.720
in Kruger National Park, one of Africa's most famous wildlife reserves.

524
00:29:02.640 --> 00:29:06.319
Located in South Africa along the border of Mozambique, it

525
00:29:06.400 --> 00:29:09.880
spans seven six hundred square miles, about the size of

526
00:29:09.920 --> 00:29:14.359
New Jersey. It's known for its remarkable biodiversity, including the

527
00:29:14.400 --> 00:29:18.599
Big Five, hundreds of bird species in a mix of savannah,

528
00:29:18.640 --> 00:29:22.319
woodlands and rivers. Okay, here's a short quiz. What do

529
00:29:22.359 --> 00:29:23.440
you think the top five are?

530
00:29:23.599 --> 00:29:30.480
Oh, gosh, giraffe nope, Elephant yes, tiger or lion.

531
00:29:30.920 --> 00:29:35.440
Lion not tiger. I just got to tell you lions, leopards, elephant,

532
00:29:35.519 --> 00:29:36.599
rhino and buffalo.

533
00:29:36.640 --> 00:29:38.440
Okay, I was going to say rhino. I thought that

534
00:29:38.519 --> 00:29:40.200
was probably all I would have gotten.

535
00:29:40.279 --> 00:29:42.799
I hope someday if there's so many places I want

536
00:29:42.799 --> 00:29:44.640
to visit now that we've done the podcast, for so

537
00:29:44.640 --> 00:29:47.680
many more places I would want to visit, but it

538
00:29:47.720 --> 00:29:50.759
would just be amazing. The park is considered one of

539
00:29:50.759 --> 00:29:53.119
the best places in the world to see wildlife up

540
00:29:53.160 --> 00:29:57.400
close in its natural habitat. On Friday, November twelve, twenty ten,

541
00:29:57.759 --> 00:30:00.799
they flew to Cape Town for the second leg their honeymoon.

542
00:30:01.599 --> 00:30:05.240
But even during the honeymoon tensions rose Annie sent her

543
00:30:05.279 --> 00:30:08.640
cousin text messages that they were fighting and even that

544
00:30:08.720 --> 00:30:12.599
she hated her husband and regretted the marriage. One message

545
00:30:12.640 --> 00:30:17.160
said crying has become my new hobby. Another read, He's

546
00:30:17.200 --> 00:30:19.240
a really good guy in all ways, but I just

547
00:30:19.279 --> 00:30:22.480
don't feel happy with him at all. When she spoke

548
00:30:22.519 --> 00:30:25.359
with her parents, she told of the Node in Swedish

549
00:30:25.759 --> 00:30:27.400
that she had a lot to tell him. When they

550
00:30:27.440 --> 00:30:31.720
returned from South Africa. He too, felt that she already

551
00:30:31.759 --> 00:30:32.839
regretted the marriage.

552
00:30:32.839 --> 00:30:35.559
Oh, that's really sad to have that level of regret

553
00:30:35.599 --> 00:30:39.559
that Early in Zolatango was a thirty one year old

554
00:30:39.599 --> 00:30:43.799
insurance salesman and building inspector. He supported his mother and

555
00:30:43.880 --> 00:30:47.680
younger siblings. Along with his wife and five children, he

556
00:30:47.799 --> 00:30:51.440
was having some difficulty making ends meet. For extra income,

557
00:30:51.599 --> 00:30:54.440
he began working as a taxi driver in his off hours,

558
00:30:54.599 --> 00:30:57.599
using his girlfriend's vehicle, a Volkswagen Sharrun.

559
00:30:58.359 --> 00:31:00.759
I've read differing accounts whether he had a wife or

560
00:31:00.759 --> 00:31:02.599
a girlfriend or book okay.

561
00:31:03.400 --> 00:31:05.839
He met Anni and Shriann after picking them up from

562
00:31:05.839 --> 00:31:08.440
the airport. They arranged to have him pick them up

563
00:31:08.480 --> 00:31:11.920
the next night for dinner. The newlywed spent most of

564
00:31:11.960 --> 00:31:14.880
Saturday relaxing by the pool at the Cape Grace before

565
00:31:14.920 --> 00:31:18.000
heading out for a late dinner. They had originally booked

566
00:31:18.039 --> 00:31:21.279
a table at the upscale ninety six Winery Road, but

567
00:31:21.400 --> 00:31:24.240
decided they weren't hungry enough for a multi course meal.

568
00:31:25.000 --> 00:31:28.599
Their driver, Zola Tongo, suggested a more casual option, the

569
00:31:28.640 --> 00:31:32.039
Surfside Restaurant, tucked into a dingy strip mall in the

570
00:31:32.039 --> 00:31:35.400
beach town of Strand, about thirty minutes from Cape Town.

571
00:31:35.880 --> 00:31:38.880
It was an unusual choice for a honeymoon dinner, especially

572
00:31:38.920 --> 00:31:40.599
for a couple dressed so elegantly.

573
00:31:41.319 --> 00:31:44.039
Our friend Natasha from South Africa said this would be

574
00:31:44.079 --> 00:31:46.759
a kin to someone out to dinner in New York

575
00:31:46.799 --> 00:31:51.839
City going to Wendy's. Okay, just it was an odd location.

576
00:31:52.039 --> 00:31:53.119
It was an odd choice.

577
00:31:53.279 --> 00:31:55.079
Yeah, I'm pretty sure I've been to wendy Is in

578
00:31:55.119 --> 00:31:56.000
New York City before.

579
00:31:56.039 --> 00:31:59.079
There was absolutely nothing wrong going to Wendy's. But if

580
00:31:59.119 --> 00:32:00.960
you went to the wind on the wrong side of

581
00:32:01.000 --> 00:32:03.240
town when you were dressed in a tuxedo.

582
00:32:02.920 --> 00:32:06.119
Yeah I get it. Anni and Shrian were captured on

583
00:32:06.200 --> 00:32:09.960
surveillance at nine thirty three pm entering the slightly Tacki

584
00:32:10.079 --> 00:32:14.359
beachfront restaurant. Srian wore a tailored black suit, while Anni,

585
00:32:14.480 --> 00:32:17.359
in a short dress and strappy high heels with a

586
00:32:17.400 --> 00:32:22.079
shawl over her shoulders, looked mildly annoyed as they walked inside.

587
00:32:22.200 --> 00:32:25.000
She ordered a vegetable curry and a white wine, while

588
00:32:25.000 --> 00:32:29.160
Shrian chose sushi and vodka. By ten twenty four pm,

589
00:32:29.279 --> 00:32:32.519
the couple was again captured on camera leaving the restaurant

590
00:32:32.599 --> 00:32:35.960
and getting into Tongo's taxi. He had been their driver

591
00:32:36.119 --> 00:32:38.240
since the previous day, when he'd picked them up at

592
00:32:38.240 --> 00:32:41.039
the airport and taken them to their five star hotel,

593
00:32:41.599 --> 00:32:44.039
showing them the best views Cape Town had to offer.

594
00:32:44.880 --> 00:32:49.319
He appeared professional, courteous, and proud of his work earlier

595
00:32:49.359 --> 00:32:52.440
that evening. After dropping the couple off, Srian had pulled

596
00:32:52.480 --> 00:32:56.240
Tongo Aside out of Annie's earshot and told him the

597
00:32:56.359 --> 00:32:59.039
job needed to be done that night or his life

598
00:32:59.119 --> 00:33:04.079
could be in danger. Allegedly, after dinner, Zola didn't take

599
00:33:04.119 --> 00:33:06.920
them back to Cape Grace, but instead drove them toward

600
00:33:07.000 --> 00:33:10.720
more rural areas. Sria later claimed that Annie had asked

601
00:33:10.720 --> 00:33:14.880
to see the real Africa. But even locals avoid venturing

602
00:33:14.920 --> 00:33:18.480
out after dark, and tourists are strongly warned against entering

603
00:33:18.559 --> 00:33:21.640
the rougher townships at night, where the crime rate is higher.

604
00:33:22.400 --> 00:33:25.400
This is one of the most problematic points of the story.

605
00:33:26.079 --> 00:33:29.319
No one would willingly go to this area at night,

606
00:33:30.000 --> 00:33:34.200
especially a tourist, especially wealthy tourists. Police won't even respond

607
00:33:34.240 --> 00:33:38.480
to a call unless there are five officers together. Interesting,

608
00:33:38.519 --> 00:33:39.480
it's that dangerous.

609
00:33:39.640 --> 00:33:42.319
It did make me think, though there are tourists that

610
00:33:42.480 --> 00:33:44.599
like to go to places like that. I was thinking

611
00:33:44.640 --> 00:33:47.400
about Brazil actually, because there are places in Brazil like

612
00:33:47.480 --> 00:33:50.559
near Rio called the favelas, which are like the slums,

613
00:33:50.920 --> 00:33:54.359
and people pay to have someone drive them through and

614
00:33:54.440 --> 00:33:57.279
tour that area. But it doesn't sound like Srian and

615
00:33:57.279 --> 00:34:00.279
Annie would be would be into that sort of thing,

616
00:34:00.559 --> 00:34:01.279
especially not at.

617
00:34:01.319 --> 00:34:04.240
Night, especially not at night. Yeah, and remember this is

618
00:34:04.319 --> 00:34:06.440
one of the most dangerous places in the world.

619
00:34:06.559 --> 00:34:06.839
Really.

620
00:34:07.000 --> 00:34:10.519
Yeah. The roads were bumpy and unpaved, but Anni and

621
00:34:10.559 --> 00:34:13.679
Shriann sat in the back seat thumbing through photos from

622
00:34:13.679 --> 00:34:17.559
their safari, oblivious to their surroundings and unaware that their

623
00:34:17.599 --> 00:34:21.679
driver was taking them into a very rough area. While driving,

624
00:34:21.800 --> 00:34:25.159
Zola sent Shrian a text message reminding him not to

625
00:34:25.199 --> 00:34:29.800
forget to leave payment. Schrian had quietly exchanged American dollars

626
00:34:29.880 --> 00:34:33.280
for ten thousand South African rand, which is about thirteen

627
00:34:33.400 --> 00:34:37.920
hundred and seventy US dollars. That afternoon. He had carefully

628
00:34:37.960 --> 00:34:40.239
placed an envelope of cash in the pocket on the

629
00:34:40.280 --> 00:34:41.800
back of the passenger seat.

630
00:34:42.199 --> 00:34:47.159
Zola Tango had actually taken Shrian to a store where

631
00:34:47.159 --> 00:34:50.519
he could exchange American dollars.

632
00:34:50.159 --> 00:34:53.119
For a rest Okay. While at a stop sign, two

633
00:34:53.239 --> 00:34:56.760
armed men approached the taxi, slamming their guns on the windshield.

634
00:34:57.559 --> 00:35:00.599
One man opened the driver's door and demanded Sola get

635
00:35:00.599 --> 00:35:03.400
out and get into the back seat with Shriann and Annie.

636
00:35:04.119 --> 00:35:06.719
The second man sat in the passenger seat and pointed

637
00:35:06.760 --> 00:35:09.920
his gun into the back seat. He demanded they hand

638
00:35:09.960 --> 00:35:14.079
over anything of value. They stripped themselves of their belongings,

639
00:35:14.199 --> 00:35:17.880
a Giorgio or Amani watch, a Cardier watch, a camera,

640
00:35:18.280 --> 00:35:22.880
a white gold and diamond bracelet, a leather purse, Annie's BlackBerry,

641
00:35:23.280 --> 00:35:27.360
and about five thousand rand. When Schrian tried to slyly

642
00:35:27.480 --> 00:35:30.960
keep his own BlackBerry, the hijacker noticed, ordered him to

643
00:35:31.000 --> 00:35:33.559
hand it over and warned that he would kill him

644
00:35:33.599 --> 00:35:37.960
if he tried anything like that again. As the chaos unfolded,

645
00:35:38.039 --> 00:35:41.079
Annie quietly slipped off her wedding and engagement rings and

646
00:35:41.159 --> 00:35:44.880
tucked them between the seat cushions. The driver stopped at

647
00:35:44.880 --> 00:35:47.639
a gas station and forced Zola out of the taxi.

648
00:35:48.480 --> 00:35:51.599
Anni cried in the back seat and pleaded with the carjackers.

649
00:35:52.159 --> 00:35:54.719
We're on our honeymoon. We don't have any money with us.

650
00:35:55.000 --> 00:35:59.760
Please let us go. She continued to scream. The hijackers

651
00:35:59.800 --> 00:36:02.400
told Trian to make her be quiet or they would

652
00:36:02.400 --> 00:36:05.559
shoot her. We just want the car. We won't hurt you,

653
00:36:05.599 --> 00:36:09.360
the men said. They drove for another ten minutes before

654
00:36:09.400 --> 00:36:12.840
the vehicle came to a sudden stop. The gunmen shouted

655
00:36:12.880 --> 00:36:15.880
at Shrian to get out. He later said he tried

656
00:36:15.920 --> 00:36:18.280
to resist and held on to Anni, but one of

657
00:36:18.320 --> 00:36:21.320
the men cocked his gun and pressed it to Shrian's temple.

658
00:36:22.079 --> 00:36:24.760
Believing he had no choice, he crawled out of a

659
00:36:24.800 --> 00:36:28.159
window of the van. As the van sped off into

660
00:36:28.159 --> 00:36:32.159
the night, he could hear Annie's screams trailing off. He

661
00:36:32.199 --> 00:36:36.400
found himself alone and disoriented on a dark, unpaved road

662
00:36:36.679 --> 00:36:41.480
in a rural area. What a horrifying scene is really terrifying,

663
00:36:41.559 --> 00:36:45.239
especially in a strange country you're not familiar with. And yeah,

664
00:36:45.280 --> 00:36:50.599
that just sounds really scary. Just before midnight on November thirteenth,

665
00:36:50.760 --> 00:36:54.960
Vinode Hindotcha, Anni's father, received a life changing phone call.

666
00:36:55.760 --> 00:36:59.159
It was his new friend Prakash Dewani informing him that

667
00:36:59.239 --> 00:37:03.000
Anni had been abducted outside of Cape Town. He tried

668
00:37:03.039 --> 00:37:05.480
to calm Venode and assure him that they would be

669
00:37:05.519 --> 00:37:09.000
able to negotiate with Annie's captors to release her. As

670
00:37:09.079 --> 00:37:13.039
money was no object, they would pay whatever ransom necessary

671
00:37:13.880 --> 00:37:18.039
they would certainly get her back. Prakash made travel arrangements.

672
00:37:18.360 --> 00:37:20.679
The men would meet in Amsterdam and then fly to

673
00:37:20.719 --> 00:37:21.639
Cape Town together.

674
00:37:22.800 --> 00:37:26.400
So remember that Venode is in Sweden and Prakash is

675
00:37:26.440 --> 00:37:27.079
in England.

676
00:37:27.239 --> 00:37:33.280
Right moments later, Schriann called and apologized vociferously. I'm so sorry,

677
00:37:33.360 --> 00:37:36.320
dad for not taking better care of your daughter. He

678
00:37:36.360 --> 00:37:40.679
repeated the words several times while sobbing. Vnoude told him

679
00:37:40.719 --> 00:37:41.840
that he would be there soon.

680
00:37:42.119 --> 00:37:46.159
So at this point, Vanaude feels like Shriann is his son.

681
00:37:46.239 --> 00:37:48.320
He feels a great deal of affection for him, and

682
00:37:48.360 --> 00:37:51.719
he feels badly that he's going through this, and he's

683
00:37:52.239 --> 00:37:54.360
heartbroken that Annie is lost.

684
00:37:55.039 --> 00:37:57.519
The weather was bad and the roads were icy. It

685
00:37:57.559 --> 00:37:59.000
was a two and a half hour drive to the

686
00:37:59.000 --> 00:38:02.760
airport in Goodway. Vanaude had two hours to get there.

687
00:38:03.440 --> 00:38:05.920
He drove like a madman and nearly swerved off of

688
00:38:05.960 --> 00:38:08.679
the road several times, but made it to the airport

689
00:38:08.760 --> 00:38:11.760
for a three am flight to Amsterdam. He was out

690
00:38:11.800 --> 00:38:13.960
of his mind with worry on the two hour flight.

691
00:38:14.920 --> 00:38:17.519
Once he arrived, he rushed off the plane to call home.

692
00:38:18.440 --> 00:38:22.119
As soon as Nilam answered, he heard sobbing on the line.

693
00:38:22.239 --> 00:38:27.119
His worst nightmare, every parent's worst nightmare, was coming to life.

694
00:38:27.199 --> 00:38:30.800
He dropped to his knees and wept openly. At the airport,

695
00:38:31.119 --> 00:38:34.159
his treasured daughter was gone. Inconceivable.

696
00:38:34.840 --> 00:38:38.599
When he called home, no one said that Annie was gone,

697
00:38:38.599 --> 00:38:41.400
but just he could hear like his family there. Yeah,

698
00:38:41.400 --> 00:38:43.880
he was weeping and he knew that it was bad news.

699
00:38:43.920 --> 00:38:47.719
So sad. He somehow made it onto the next flight

700
00:38:47.840 --> 00:38:51.360
with Prakash Dewani, who had also heard about Annie's death

701
00:38:51.719 --> 00:38:55.480
and was badly shaken. The flight from Amsterdam to South

702
00:38:55.519 --> 00:38:59.360
Africa was eleven hours long. Vnaude cried for much of

703
00:38:59.360 --> 00:39:03.320
the flight, lined with grief. Prakash tried to comfort his friend.

704
00:39:03.760 --> 00:39:05.280
He was also very emotional.

705
00:39:06.159 --> 00:39:09.679
The men both thought that Annie was kidnapped for money, okay,

706
00:39:09.800 --> 00:39:13.960
and they were very concerned. But they thought they both

707
00:39:14.039 --> 00:39:16.719
had money and they would have paid anything to get

708
00:39:16.760 --> 00:39:19.599
Annie back, right, So they were, you know, kind of

709
00:39:20.159 --> 00:39:22.559
comforted by that thought, like, we'll get her back, We'll

710
00:39:22.599 --> 00:39:25.159
pay whatever it takes. You know, the kidnappers will be

711
00:39:25.199 --> 00:39:27.440
in touch with us, and we will figure this out

712
00:39:27.440 --> 00:39:30.000
when we get to South Africa. Yeah, so when they

713
00:39:30.039 --> 00:39:32.320
found out that she was shot, they.

714
00:39:31.840 --> 00:39:35.639
Were a big shot. Sure. Yeah. When they arrived in

715
00:39:35.679 --> 00:39:39.400
South Africa twenty four hours after Annie's abduction, they were

716
00:39:39.440 --> 00:39:42.840
met at the airport by ambassadors from Sweden and Great Britain,

717
00:39:43.159 --> 00:39:45.519
who drove them to the Cape Grace Hotel to meet

718
00:39:45.559 --> 00:39:49.440
with Sriann. The men hugged, but there was little to say.

719
00:39:50.239 --> 00:39:52.719
Venode was still in a state of shock, while Shriann

720
00:39:52.719 --> 00:39:56.679
seemed distant and not forthcoming. He was constantly on his

721
00:39:56.760 --> 00:39:59.960
phone or laptop, but didn't seem to be an emotional district.

722
00:40:01.119 --> 00:40:04.360
When Venoude said he wanted to see Annie, Schrian told

723
00:40:04.440 --> 00:40:06.920
him he could not because her body was not ready

724
00:40:06.920 --> 00:40:09.760
to be viewed. He didn't care. He just wanted to

725
00:40:09.760 --> 00:40:14.199
see his daughter, but he complied with Srian's wishes. The

726
00:40:14.239 --> 00:40:16.639
next morning, when he went to the morgue to see Annie,

727
00:40:16.880 --> 00:40:19.920
Srean declined to go, saying it would be too painful

728
00:40:19.960 --> 00:40:22.880
for him. He stayed behind to get a haircut and

729
00:40:22.920 --> 00:40:26.760
buy a new suit. That's really odd choices right there.

730
00:40:27.159 --> 00:40:29.519
I read part of a Nodes book and he talks

731
00:40:29.559 --> 00:40:33.320
about this, how he literally couldn't stop crying. He was

732
00:40:34.079 --> 00:40:38.119
in such grief and shock, and he never saw Sriann

733
00:40:38.840 --> 00:40:41.559
shed a tear, and he didn't seem to be as

734
00:40:41.599 --> 00:40:44.599
emotional as you know, he expected him to be right.

735
00:40:44.719 --> 00:40:48.039
You know, people process grief differently, but he just felt

736
00:40:48.039 --> 00:40:50.079
like he was very detached.

737
00:40:50.159 --> 00:40:54.119
Yeah. The following day, the three men flew with Annie's

738
00:40:54.159 --> 00:40:58.280
body back to Bristol, England. We'll be back after a break.

739
00:41:05.920 --> 00:41:11.119
The Directorate for a Priority Crime Investigation or DPCI, commonly

740
00:41:11.159 --> 00:41:14.079
known as the Hawks, is an elite unit of the

741
00:41:14.119 --> 00:41:18.239
South African Police Service tasked with handling the country's most

742
00:41:18.400 --> 00:41:23.639
serious offenses. Their mandate includes investigating organized and violent crime,

743
00:41:24.119 --> 00:41:29.840
major commercial offenses, corruption, illicit mining, human trafficking, and other

744
00:41:29.960 --> 00:41:34.519
high profile or national priority cases. The murder of a

745
00:41:34.559 --> 00:41:40.079
wealthy tourist came under their purview. While carjackings are relatively common,

746
00:41:40.280 --> 00:41:44.159
the victims are not usually killed, and tourists are rarely

747
00:41:44.199 --> 00:41:50.840
targeted for murder. Captain Paul Hendriksa led the investigation. He

748
00:41:50.920 --> 00:41:55.280
spoke briefly with Tongo and believed his account and released

749
00:41:55.360 --> 00:42:01.119
him fairly quickly. The investigators were immediately suspicious Shrian Dowani

750
00:42:01.400 --> 00:42:05.079
and some of the decisions he made. Why, for example,

751
00:42:05.400 --> 00:42:08.400
had Anni and Shriann chosen to ride from the airport

752
00:42:08.800 --> 00:42:13.679
with Tongo instead of taking the Cape Grace's dedicated car service,

753
00:42:14.880 --> 00:42:17.360
And what would have compelled them to drive into one

754
00:42:17.400 --> 00:42:21.960
of Cape Town's most dangerous townships after dark? And why

755
00:42:21.960 --> 00:42:26.320
would Zola Tongo have agreed to drive them there? Why

756
00:42:26.519 --> 00:42:29.480
was the vehicle not sold for parts or burned to

757
00:42:29.639 --> 00:42:34.239
destroy evidence. And why would the carjackers let two witnesses

758
00:42:34.360 --> 00:42:38.920
who could clearly identify them, walk free yet kill Anni

759
00:42:39.119 --> 00:42:39.800
moments later?

760
00:42:40.119 --> 00:42:42.639
All seemed like very good questions, and.

761
00:42:42.559 --> 00:42:46.880
Shrian's account of November thirteen shifted with each telling. He

762
00:42:46.960 --> 00:42:50.280
initially told a Daily Mail reporter that the visit to

763
00:42:50.320 --> 00:42:53.880
the rural township had been Annie's idea, claiming that she

764
00:42:54.000 --> 00:42:57.599
wanted to see the real South Africa, But in an

765
00:42:57.639 --> 00:43:00.480
interview with The Sun a week later, he gave a

766
00:43:00.480 --> 00:43:04.840
different account, saying it was Zola Tongo who suggested the

767
00:43:04.880 --> 00:43:09.599
detour so that they could see some African dancing, and

768
00:43:09.719 --> 00:43:12.280
that he and Annie had been unsure about the plan.

769
00:43:13.159 --> 00:43:16.639
Schrian also changed his description of how he was forced

770
00:43:16.679 --> 00:43:19.719
from the car. First, he claimed he'd been pushed out

771
00:43:19.719 --> 00:43:22.480
the back door while the vehicle was still moving. In

772
00:43:22.519 --> 00:43:25.880
a later interview, however, he said that the attackers couldn't

773
00:43:25.880 --> 00:43:28.719
get me out because the child blocks brawn, so they

774
00:43:28.840 --> 00:43:31.440
dragged me out of the window while I was struggling

775
00:43:31.480 --> 00:43:35.960
and screaming. But both of these accounts were suspicious because

776
00:43:36.000 --> 00:43:38.519
Schriann didn't have any injuries, and you would think in

777
00:43:38.599 --> 00:43:40.960
both of these cases that he would have suffered some

778
00:43:40.960 --> 00:43:44.599
sort of injury, right yep. And perhaps most damning was

779
00:43:44.639 --> 00:43:48.360
that there was no evidence that Annie had been sexually assaulted.

780
00:43:49.079 --> 00:43:51.360
So there was one bruise in the shape of a

781
00:43:51.400 --> 00:43:55.440
hand on her upper thigh, So investigators couldn't figure out

782
00:43:55.440 --> 00:43:58.320
why Annie was left in the car, and Zola and

783
00:43:58.360 --> 00:44:02.559
Shriann were I was from the car if she wasn't

784
00:44:02.559 --> 00:44:06.559
sexually assaulted, So that's how they came to the conclusion

785
00:44:06.599 --> 00:44:10.880
that it must have been a contracted hit. Days after

786
00:44:10.920 --> 00:44:14.599
the murder, Schriann called Captain Hendriksa and asked if they'd

787
00:44:14.639 --> 00:44:18.840
found Annie's engagement ring. He said no, and Sriann told

788
00:44:18.920 --> 00:44:20.960
him that it was between the seats in the van.

789
00:44:21.960 --> 00:44:25.000
But in Schriann's original statement, he'd said that Annie had

790
00:44:25.039 --> 00:44:29.000
handed the ring over to the carjackers. When Hendriksa pointed

791
00:44:29.039 --> 00:44:33.760
out this discrepancy, Schriann grew flustered. So later an eyewitness

792
00:44:33.800 --> 00:44:37.199
came forward and said that she had seen Annie in

793
00:44:37.440 --> 00:44:40.440
the back of the van and thought that her dress

794
00:44:40.559 --> 00:44:43.360
was pulled up and her underwear was pulled down, and

795
00:44:43.400 --> 00:44:48.679
that she saw evidence of sexual assault. But I've seen

796
00:44:48.719 --> 00:44:52.639
pictures of the crime scene being investigated and police were

797
00:44:52.639 --> 00:44:55.440
holding up white sheets so the public couldn't see. So

798
00:44:55.599 --> 00:44:59.880
I'm a little suspicious of this account. Remember the bloody

799
00:45:00.000 --> 00:45:02.159
his fingerprints found on the van. We talked about that

800
00:45:02.239 --> 00:45:05.880
at the very beginning. Police trace them to twenty five

801
00:45:05.960 --> 00:45:10.159
year old Khalila Mengeni. He did have a criminal record.

802
00:45:10.239 --> 00:45:13.000
Five years earlier, he'd been arrested for killing a man

803
00:45:13.039 --> 00:45:15.840
in a bar fight, though he was ultimately cleared of

804
00:45:15.880 --> 00:45:19.599
that charge. He confessed to his part in Annie's murder

805
00:45:19.679 --> 00:45:25.199
and named his accomplice a man named Miziwama Doda Lenox Quave.

806
00:45:26.360 --> 00:45:28.719
He also confessed to his part in the murder and

807
00:45:28.840 --> 00:45:33.519
carjacking a few days later. Taxi driver Zola Tongo, who'd

808
00:45:33.559 --> 00:45:37.199
been in hiding, turned himself into the police. On November

809
00:45:37.199 --> 00:45:40.599
twenty second, when he had his first court appearance. He

810
00:45:40.719 --> 00:45:43.400
arrived covered from head to toe in a white sheet.

811
00:45:43.679 --> 00:45:47.760
The prosecutor was prepared to offer Tongo a plea deal

812
00:45:47.880 --> 00:45:52.000
in exchange for more information, but the Hindocha family first

813
00:45:52.079 --> 00:45:55.719
had to give their consent. It was a painstaking decision,

814
00:45:56.360 --> 00:46:01.320
yet after much deliberation, they agreed. So the Dewanis had

815
00:46:01.400 --> 00:46:05.400
hired a high powered publicist Max Clifford to deal with

816
00:46:05.400 --> 00:46:08.840
the media. That was fine, but when they demanded the

817
00:46:08.920 --> 00:46:12.239
Hindojas sign an agreement to not talk to the press

818
00:46:12.280 --> 00:46:18.159
without their approval, the Node flatly refused. Offended, Clifford convinced

819
00:46:18.159 --> 00:46:21.840
Strian to give an interview to the UK tabloid The Sun.

820
00:46:22.320 --> 00:46:23.440
Here's a clip.

821
00:46:23.320 --> 00:46:25.559
Onie was amazing because there was never a quiet moment

822
00:46:25.599 --> 00:46:29.559
when she was in the brook. The proposal was the

823
00:46:29.559 --> 00:46:32.880
best moment of my life. I'd arranged for a knight

824
00:46:32.960 --> 00:46:35.840
in Paris and as the Ritz Hotel and.

825
00:46:35.880 --> 00:46:39.800
Some surprise Yeah, yeah, the wife about this show.

826
00:46:42.559 --> 00:46:42.800
Yeah.

827
00:46:46.480 --> 00:46:52.239
The ring was a single solitaire diamonds nature. The restaurant

828
00:46:52.599 --> 00:46:55.239
served it on a ring cushion, and he was so

829
00:46:55.360 --> 00:46:57.519
excited to get the ring. I didn't even have a

830
00:46:57.599 --> 00:47:00.559
chance to fully ask the question. It was always the

831
00:47:00.679 --> 00:47:03.280
jake that I haven't ever actually asked to marry me

832
00:47:03.360 --> 00:47:07.280
because we were so excited. I just got married to

833
00:47:07.519 --> 00:47:09.840
the girl of my dreams and she actually was the

834
00:47:09.880 --> 00:47:12.159
girl of my dreams.

835
00:47:13.199 --> 00:47:15.519
Do you think that he sounds sincere and in love

836
00:47:15.559 --> 00:47:16.320
with his wife?

837
00:47:16.960 --> 00:47:18.519
Yeah, to me, it sounds like he does.

838
00:47:18.639 --> 00:47:21.840
Yeah, I agree. I think it's possible that he had

839
00:47:21.840 --> 00:47:25.559
some media trading from his publicist. When it came time

840
00:47:25.599 --> 00:47:29.599
for Annie's funeral, tensions mounted between the two families. The

841
00:47:29.719 --> 00:47:33.159
Hindojas would have preferred to have the funeral in Sweden,

842
00:47:33.639 --> 00:47:38.199
but they allowed Schrian to make the arrangements. Things deteriorated

843
00:47:38.320 --> 00:47:42.800
further when Schriann refused Amy's request to dress her sister

844
00:47:42.880 --> 00:47:47.199
for the funeral, a role traditionally reserved for female relatives

845
00:47:47.199 --> 00:47:51.559
in Hindu custom. Ami watched in horror as Shriann handled

846
00:47:51.599 --> 00:47:57.079
Annie's body, roughly, forcing gold bangles onto her swollen wrist.

847
00:47:57.360 --> 00:47:59.880
A week after her murder, on November twenty first twenty,

848
00:48:00.440 --> 00:48:03.840
Annie was laid to rest. Fifteen hundred mourners packed a

849
00:48:03.920 --> 00:48:08.280
London concert hall for her funeral. Before the service, the

850
00:48:08.320 --> 00:48:11.360
Hendocha family wanted a quiet moment alone to say goodbye

851
00:48:11.440 --> 00:48:16.440
to Annie, but Schriann denied them that. When Amy circumvented

852
00:48:16.519 --> 00:48:19.880
him and asked the funeral parlor manager for access, Schrian

853
00:48:20.039 --> 00:48:23.079
stormed into the room, caused a scene and shattered their

854
00:48:23.159 --> 00:48:27.159
final moments with Annie. The family had placed red roses

855
00:48:27.239 --> 00:48:32.159
and handwritten heartfelt messages to Annie around her in her casket.

856
00:48:32.639 --> 00:48:35.199
Sriann tossed them on to the ground. He said he

857
00:48:35.239 --> 00:48:37.920
didn't want Annie's casket to look like a dust bin

858
00:48:39.119 --> 00:48:42.559
for the family, it felt unforgivable and indicatives of something

859
00:48:42.679 --> 00:48:46.559
dark taking root between the two families. Sriann apologized a

860
00:48:46.599 --> 00:48:49.320
few days later, but the hurt ran too deep for

861
00:48:49.360 --> 00:48:54.159
his words to repair the damage. The day before Annie's funeral,

862
00:48:54.280 --> 00:48:58.159
Schriann had hosted a pizza party. When vanode find out

863
00:48:58.280 --> 00:49:01.000
found out, he was deeply unsettled. He thought it was

864
00:49:01.000 --> 00:49:06.199
inappropriate and disrespectful of Shrian. Schrian tried to explain himself

865
00:49:06.239 --> 00:49:08.559
that Annie had once said to him that when she died,

866
00:49:08.840 --> 00:49:12.239
she wanted to be celebrated and not mourned, but Vanoude

867
00:49:12.239 --> 00:49:15.599
felt this wasn't true. In the day since Annie's murder,

868
00:49:15.880 --> 00:49:20.760
he'd grown increasingly concerned over Shrian's behavior. He had more

869
00:49:20.840 --> 00:49:24.840
questions than answers, and Shrian's evasiveness only heightened his concern.

870
00:49:25.719 --> 00:49:29.559
Banaude flew back to Cape Town, desperate for clarity. Even

871
00:49:29.599 --> 00:49:33.719
within the Hondotcha family, opinions had split. Vanoud's mother was

872
00:49:33.800 --> 00:49:38.239
convinced Srian had handed Annie's death. Ami believed that he

873
00:49:38.400 --> 00:49:42.280
was another victim, and Vanoude himself no longer knew what

874
00:49:42.360 --> 00:49:45.880
to think. What do you think of Shrian's behavior at

875
00:49:45.880 --> 00:49:48.840
the funeral and the events surrounding the funeral.

876
00:49:48.920 --> 00:49:50.920
I mean, it doesn't seem very appropriate, But at the

877
00:49:50.960 --> 00:49:54.360
same time, I know death can bring out all sorts

878
00:49:54.360 --> 00:49:58.719
of things in people that you know don't seem natural

879
00:49:58.800 --> 00:50:03.159
or normal, and everyone grieves and processes in a different way,

880
00:50:03.280 --> 00:50:06.519
So I can't say, like all, it's super suspicious. It

881
00:50:06.599 --> 00:50:10.480
definitely seems inappropriate and out of the ordinary.

882
00:50:10.079 --> 00:50:15.760
But he seemed more angry than emotional, and I think

883
00:50:15.800 --> 00:50:18.480
that's why her family didn't know what to think.

884
00:50:18.519 --> 00:50:19.079
Yeah fair.

885
00:50:19.800 --> 00:50:23.280
On December seventh, twenty ten, Vanoude was present for Zola

886
00:50:23.360 --> 00:50:28.320
Togo's court appearance. He pleaded guilty to murder, aggravated robbery

887
00:50:28.360 --> 00:50:32.000
and kidnapping and agreed to testify against the others involved.

888
00:50:32.559 --> 00:50:36.199
In return, he would receive an eighteen year sentence with

889
00:50:36.280 --> 00:50:39.960
the possibility of parole after twelve, far lighter than the

890
00:50:39.960 --> 00:50:43.119
typical South African penalty for such a crime, which is

891
00:50:43.199 --> 00:50:48.360
life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Tongo asked to

892
00:50:48.440 --> 00:50:52.480
speak privately with Thenode to ask for forgiveness, but he

893
00:50:52.559 --> 00:50:57.320
was too overwhelmed with grief to accept the meeting. Shock

894
00:50:57.440 --> 00:50:59.800
rippled through the court room as the prosecutor told the

895
00:51:00.320 --> 00:51:03.880
that Tongo had enacted on his own. Shri and Dewani

896
00:51:03.960 --> 00:51:07.320
had hired him to kill his bride. In his confession,

897
00:51:07.719 --> 00:51:11.199
Tongo claimed that Schriann first approached him after the driver

898
00:51:11.320 --> 00:51:14.760
from the airport to the Cape Grace hotel. While Annie

899
00:51:14.800 --> 00:51:17.960
went inside to check into the hotel, Schriann stayed behind

900
00:51:18.000 --> 00:51:21.559
and spoke with Tongo in the taxi for about ten minutes,

901
00:51:22.000 --> 00:51:27.039
saying he needed someone taken off the scene. Hotel surveillance

902
00:51:27.119 --> 00:51:30.960
later confirmed that Schrian entered the lobby roughly ten minutes

903
00:51:31.079 --> 00:51:34.480
after his wife. They secretly met at noon the next day.

904
00:51:34.519 --> 00:51:37.599
While Annie was by the pool, Tongo drove him to

905
00:51:37.639 --> 00:51:41.119
exchange money at a jewelry store in town to pay

906
00:51:41.239 --> 00:51:44.400
him and the hired killers. He went to the jewelry

907
00:51:44.440 --> 00:51:46.880
store because he said it was a better exchange rate

908
00:51:46.920 --> 00:51:49.400
than he would have received at the hotel, but it

909
00:51:49.480 --> 00:51:53.440
might have been an attempt to be more secretive to Sriann.

910
00:51:53.519 --> 00:51:58.400
Exchanged fifteen hundred US dollars for ten thousand South African rand.

911
00:51:59.159 --> 00:52:02.719
Sriann had agreed to pay Tongo five thousand rand and

912
00:52:02.760 --> 00:52:07.320
the killers fifteen thousand Rand, which is about one nine

913
00:52:07.360 --> 00:52:10.880
hundred US dollars. To me, that seems like a shockingly

914
00:52:11.000 --> 00:52:14.159
small amount of money, but in a country where poverty

915
00:52:14.199 --> 00:52:18.000
is widespread and opportunities are limited, especially for young men

916
00:52:18.039 --> 00:52:21.599
living in South Africa's townships, even a few thousand rand

917
00:52:21.639 --> 00:52:24.679
can feel like a life changing amount of money. That

918
00:52:24.840 --> 00:52:27.960
desperation doesn't excuse anything, but it helps explain how such

919
00:52:27.960 --> 00:52:30.480
a heartbreaking deal could ever be made.

920
00:52:30.719 --> 00:52:32.719
The thing that kind of shocks me and maybe I'll

921
00:52:32.800 --> 00:52:35.719
learn something different here, but the gall it would take

922
00:52:35.760 --> 00:52:39.000
to approach your taxi driver that you've only known for

923
00:52:39.039 --> 00:52:40.639
a short time and just be like, hey, do you

924
00:52:40.639 --> 00:52:41.719
know someone who can right?

925
00:52:41.719 --> 00:52:43.559
We'll talk about that later. And a lot of people

926
00:52:43.559 --> 00:52:46.800
point to that as he knew him for literally an

927
00:52:46.840 --> 00:52:50.159
hour and you know, is trying to make an agreement.

928
00:52:51.239 --> 00:52:53.960
To find hit men. Tongo reached out to his friend

929
00:52:54.079 --> 00:52:57.960
Monde m Balambo, a hotel receptionist who worked as a

930
00:52:58.000 --> 00:53:02.440
middleman in the plan. He connected Tongo with Mizi Wamadoda

931
00:53:02.559 --> 00:53:05.800
Lennox Quabe, a drug dealer and part time DJ, to

932
00:53:05.920 --> 00:53:11.119
complete the hit on Anni. Quabe then recruited Kohalila Mingeni

933
00:53:11.519 --> 00:53:14.920
to help. The men waited at a specific intersection. When

934
00:53:14.960 --> 00:53:18.639
Tongo stopped at the stop sign, Quabe got behind the wheel,

935
00:53:18.679 --> 00:53:21.920
wearing a pair of yellow kitchen gloves and forced Togo

936
00:53:21.960 --> 00:53:24.360
out of the driver's seat while Mngheni got into the

937
00:53:24.400 --> 00:53:28.119
passenger seat. It was understood that Tongo and Shriann would

938
00:53:28.159 --> 00:53:31.760
be released free of injuries. The hijackers drove around for

939
00:53:31.800 --> 00:53:34.320
a while with the newlyweds cowering in the back seat,

940
00:53:34.639 --> 00:53:38.800
before Shrian was forced out near Kayalicha. The car drove

941
00:53:38.840 --> 00:53:42.400
on for three minutes until it stopped abruptly. The gunman

942
00:53:42.519 --> 00:53:45.280
reached over from the front seat and shot Annie at

943
00:53:45.360 --> 00:53:48.199
close range from the front seat with a single bullet.

944
00:53:48.840 --> 00:53:51.800
It nicked her thumb, indicating that she'd raised her hand

945
00:53:51.840 --> 00:53:55.400
in self defense, then grazed two veins in her neck,

946
00:53:55.679 --> 00:53:59.000
severed her spinal cord, and then exited through her back.

947
00:53:59.559 --> 00:54:03.239
The bullet lodged into the leather seat behind her. If

948
00:54:03.239 --> 00:54:06.519
she hadn't died instantly, the injuries were so severe that

949
00:54:06.599 --> 00:54:10.480
she would have led out in minutes. Huabe and Mengheni

950
00:54:10.840 --> 00:54:13.880
disagreed on who pulled the trigger, each accusing the other,

951
00:54:14.480 --> 00:54:18.239
but later allegation's surface that the men's confessions were coerced

952
00:54:18.639 --> 00:54:22.239
that they'd been beaten with flashlights and suffocated with plastic

953
00:54:22.280 --> 00:54:25.119
bags placed over their heads before they'd admitted to their

954
00:54:25.199 --> 00:54:29.079
part in the crime. Had the South African government rushed

955
00:54:29.119 --> 00:54:30.039
to solve the crime.

956
00:54:31.599 --> 00:54:35.000
Just months before Annie's murder, South Africa had hosted the

957
00:54:35.000 --> 00:54:38.199
twenty ten FIFA World Cup, which ran from June to

958
00:54:38.320 --> 00:54:41.840
July twenty ten. The country had poured tens of billions

959
00:54:41.840 --> 00:54:45.760
of rand roughly three to five billion US dollars into

960
00:54:45.800 --> 00:54:50.519
preparing for the event, building and renovating stadiums, upgrading airports

961
00:54:50.559 --> 00:54:55.960
and highways, boosting police visibility, and launching global advertising campaigns.

962
00:54:56.800 --> 00:55:00.400
It wasn't just about holding a successful tournament. Southamp Africa

963
00:55:00.440 --> 00:55:03.119
hoped the World Cup would spark a long term surge

964
00:55:03.119 --> 00:55:08.039
in tourism, reshape international perceptions of safety, and cement the

965
00:55:08.039 --> 00:55:13.800
country as a modern world class destination. South Africa's economy

966
00:55:14.039 --> 00:55:18.320
has long struggled with inequality, high unemployment, and slow growth,

967
00:55:18.840 --> 00:55:21.639
so increasing tourism was seen as a crucial way to

968
00:55:21.639 --> 00:55:25.599
strengthen the country financially. So when a young tourist was

969
00:55:25.679 --> 00:55:29.559
murdered later that same year. The timing was disastrous. The

970
00:55:29.599 --> 00:55:32.320
eyes of the world were still on South Africa, and

971
00:55:32.440 --> 00:55:35.559
officials were desperate not to lose the momentum or goodwill

972
00:55:35.639 --> 00:55:39.079
that they had built. The idea that a honeymooning visitor

973
00:55:39.159 --> 00:55:42.239
had been killed in a township threatened to reignite the

974
00:55:42.400 --> 00:55:45.519
very fears about violent crime that the World Cup had

975
00:55:45.559 --> 00:55:49.519
tried so hard to quiet. Under that kind of scrutiny,

976
00:55:49.599 --> 00:55:53.480
police moved quickly, some would say, too quickly, to present

977
00:55:53.519 --> 00:55:59.119
a clear narrative arrests, confessions, and a straightforward hijacking gone

978
00:55:59.159 --> 00:56:03.199
wrong story, But that speed came at a cost. In

979
00:56:03.239 --> 00:56:07.159
the months and years that followed, key witnesses contradicted themselves,

980
00:56:07.559 --> 00:56:12.039
evidence didn't line up, and allegations surfaced that some confessions

981
00:56:12.039 --> 00:56:15.360
had been coerced. In hindsight, it's hard not to see

982
00:56:15.400 --> 00:56:18.719
how the pressure to protect the country's newly polished reputation

983
00:56:19.199 --> 00:56:24.239
may have shaped and possibly rushed the investigation. South Africa

984
00:56:24.280 --> 00:56:28.119
had just hosted a remarkably successful World Cup, earning global

985
00:56:28.159 --> 00:56:32.480
praise and experiencing far fewer problems than many had predicted,

986
00:56:33.000 --> 00:56:37.880
but that post tournament optimism evaporated quickly. Annie's murder became

987
00:56:37.920 --> 00:56:42.519
an international headline almost overnight, overshadowing the country's hard won

988
00:56:42.599 --> 00:56:46.280
moment on the world stage and creating intense pressure for

989
00:56:46.360 --> 00:56:48.639
authorities to solve the case swiftly.

990
00:56:49.519 --> 00:56:51.480
All of this to say, if they can pin the

991
00:56:51.559 --> 00:56:57.360
murder on Annie's significant other rather than these thugs, it

992
00:56:57.400 --> 00:56:59.840
would benefit better. Yeah, it would look much better.

993
00:57:00.880 --> 00:57:03.440
Shri and Dewani heard about his arrest warrant in the

994
00:57:03.519 --> 00:57:07.559
media before he was contacted by authorities. A judge had

995
00:57:07.559 --> 00:57:10.519
issued the warrant for his arrest on December eighth, twenty ten.

996
00:57:11.199 --> 00:57:15.360
He was charged with kidnapping, robbery, conspiracy to commit murder

997
00:57:15.440 --> 00:57:19.159
and murder. Law enforcement believed that he had orchestrated the

998
00:57:19.159 --> 00:57:23.599
carjacking and Anni's murder. He surrendered to police near his

999
00:57:23.639 --> 00:57:27.480
home in Bristol, England, two days later. He was released

1000
00:57:27.519 --> 00:57:30.800
on two hundred and fifty thousand pounds bail and required

1001
00:57:30.840 --> 00:57:34.199
to wear an ankle monitor while remaining under house arrest.

1002
00:57:34.719 --> 00:57:38.159
The evidence against him included video surveillance of him meeting

1003
00:57:38.199 --> 00:57:41.039
with Zola Tango in the lobby of the Cape Grace,

1004
00:57:41.440 --> 00:57:45.239
exchanging a white envelope the day after Annie's murder, and

1005
00:57:45.519 --> 00:57:48.559
text messages between them while Shrian and Anni were in

1006
00:57:48.599 --> 00:57:52.480
the back of the taxi. About payment, Schrian claimed that

1007
00:57:52.519 --> 00:57:54.840
the money in the envelope was money that he owed

1008
00:57:54.840 --> 00:57:59.840
Tongo for his taxi service. Prosecutors also pointed to his

1009
00:58:00.039 --> 00:58:04.239
shifting statements after the attack, unexplained gaps in the timeline,

1010
00:58:04.760 --> 00:58:07.480
and the fact that he had concealed significant parts of

1011
00:58:07.519 --> 00:58:12.079
his personal life from Annie, details, they argued suggesting motive

1012
00:58:12.199 --> 00:58:17.760
and deception. Shrian's arrest made international headlines. After seeing his

1013
00:58:17.800 --> 00:58:21.840
picture in a newspaper, a man named Leopold Lyser, a

1014
00:58:21.880 --> 00:58:25.800
male escort known by the name German Master, came forward

1015
00:58:25.880 --> 00:58:29.119
claiming that Srian had paid him on three separate occasions

1016
00:58:29.159 --> 00:58:33.960
for kinky sex. Leopold Lyser told the British tabloid The

1017
00:58:34.000 --> 00:58:37.920
Sun that Schrian had confided in him that although Annie

1018
00:58:38.079 --> 00:58:41.239
was a nice, lovely girl whom he liked, he felt

1019
00:58:41.280 --> 00:58:44.559
trapped in his engagement because breaking it off would lead

1020
00:58:44.599 --> 00:58:48.760
to him being disowned by his family. Schrian told Liser

1021
00:58:48.840 --> 00:58:52.199
that he needed to find a way out of the marriage.

1022
00:58:52.280 --> 00:58:55.480
After he sold his story to the son, Schriann threatened

1023
00:58:55.480 --> 00:58:59.440
to sue him for libel. Sadly, the media attention and

1024
00:58:59.480 --> 00:59:03.360
stress caused Lyser to take his own life in twenty sixteen,

1025
00:59:04.559 --> 00:59:08.679
but another man also came forward to investigators, a fifty

1026
00:59:08.719 --> 00:59:11.719
three year old who worked for the British Parliament. They

1027
00:59:11.719 --> 00:59:15.000
had met at a London gay fetish club called Hoist.

1028
00:59:15.559 --> 00:59:19.400
The Daily Star reported that the man told detectives that

1029
00:59:19.440 --> 00:59:24.599
Dowani was a submissive who enjoyed sadomasochism and dressing up

1030
00:59:24.639 --> 00:59:28.760
in leather. For someone like Shrian, raised in a respected

1031
00:59:29.199 --> 00:59:34.719
traditional Indian family, where reputation, marriage and community perception carry

1032
00:59:34.880 --> 00:59:39.079
enormous weight, being gay or bisexual could be viewed as

1033
00:59:39.119 --> 00:59:44.400
deeply shameful, something he might fear admitting. But the question remained,

1034
00:59:44.639 --> 00:59:48.519
could that truly be a motive for murder? But others

1035
00:59:48.639 --> 00:59:51.639
argued that Schrian couldn't have possibly arranged a murder for

1036
00:59:51.760 --> 00:59:55.199
higher plots so quickly. They had been in South Africa

1037
00:59:55.280 --> 00:59:59.360
for twenty four hours before Ani was murdered, and Zolatango

1038
00:59:59.639 --> 01:00:02.760
had no no criminal history and made good money between

1039
01:00:02.800 --> 01:00:05.800
his two jobs. Why would he arrange a hit on

1040
01:00:05.880 --> 01:00:10.159
Annie for so little money? The Hendosha family wasn't sure

1041
01:00:10.159 --> 01:00:13.719
what to think. Ammi recalled the conversation she had had

1042
01:00:13.760 --> 01:00:16.559
with Annie a few weeks before the wedding when she

1043
01:00:16.719 --> 01:00:18.880
was ready to call it off. She had been so

1044
01:00:19.039 --> 01:00:22.119
angry with Sriann that she removed her engagement ring from

1045
01:00:22.119 --> 01:00:25.679
her finger and threw it at him across the room.

1046
01:00:26.159 --> 01:00:28.559
Annie called her sister and told her that srian was

1047
01:00:28.639 --> 01:00:30.559
controlling and a neat freak.

1048
01:00:31.199 --> 01:00:33.719
There are a lot of things that Srianne did in

1049
01:00:33.800 --> 01:00:38.159
their short relationship that might be red flags. He wouldn't

1050
01:00:38.199 --> 01:00:42.159
allow Annie to eat sweets around him. He expected her

1051
01:00:42.239 --> 01:00:46.719
to fold the dirty laundry before putting it in the hamper,

1052
01:00:47.360 --> 01:00:50.559
and he presented her with a spreadsheet and said, you know,

1053
01:00:50.599 --> 01:00:51.960
you need to track your spending.

1054
01:00:52.079 --> 01:00:56.159
Oh boy, yeah, those are all red flags. Ammy calmed

1055
01:00:56.199 --> 01:00:58.920
Annie down, telling her that hundreds of people had made

1056
01:00:58.920 --> 01:01:01.800
their travel arrangements and chalked her stress up to pre

1057
01:01:01.920 --> 01:01:05.199
wedding jitters. But now she wondered if she pushed her

1058
01:01:05.239 --> 01:01:09.519
sister into an impossible situation that resulted in her death.

1059
01:01:09.920 --> 01:01:12.880
I have a lot of empathy for Amy, and you

1060
01:01:12.920 --> 01:01:16.079
know the auntie who you know, helped arrange the marriage,

1061
01:01:16.159 --> 01:01:18.639
and you know, just I think everyone feels like a

1062
01:01:18.639 --> 01:01:20.559
little bit of guilt, like why didn't we see these

1063
01:01:20.599 --> 01:01:21.280
red flags?

1064
01:01:21.360 --> 01:01:24.320
But yeah, there's just no way to know for sure

1065
01:01:25.440 --> 01:01:26.920
we'll be back after a break.

1066
01:01:34.719 --> 01:01:37.840
Sriann had been under house arrest at his family's compound

1067
01:01:37.920 --> 01:01:42.880
in Bristol and February, an ambulance was seen at the house. Later,

1068
01:01:42.960 --> 01:01:48.039
it was reported that Schriann swallowed forty six pills, including diazepam,

1069
01:01:48.480 --> 01:01:53.559
a fast acting benzodiazepine used to reduce anxiety, relaxed muscles

1070
01:01:53.599 --> 01:01:57.480
and calm the nervous system. Since Annie's murder, he'd fallen

1071
01:01:57.519 --> 01:02:01.960
into a deep depression, suffered from peaced and lost twenty

1072
01:02:01.960 --> 01:02:06.039
eight pounds. He was hospitalized for several weeks, and when

1073
01:02:06.079 --> 01:02:10.440
he began exhibiting alarming psychotic symptoms, he was transferred to

1074
01:02:10.480 --> 01:02:14.760
a high security facility. Some thought this was an orchestrated

1075
01:02:14.800 --> 01:02:18.599
attempt to fight extradition to South Africa and manipulate the

1076
01:02:18.679 --> 01:02:23.679
judicial system in South Africa. Annie's case dominated front pages,

1077
01:02:23.840 --> 01:02:28.599
nightly broadcasts, and talk radio, sparking a national conversation about crime,

1078
01:02:29.000 --> 01:02:35.119
policing and justice. Reporters scrutinized every inconsistency and every new claim,

1079
01:02:35.519 --> 01:02:39.880
with the public following along in real time. Internationally, the

1080
01:02:39.920 --> 01:02:44.480
story was just as relentless. UK tabloids fixated on every

1081
01:02:44.480 --> 01:02:49.039
twist in the narrative. Swedish outlets followed the Hindocha family closely,

1082
01:02:49.679 --> 01:02:53.800
and Indian media focused on Annie herself. With so many

1083
01:02:53.840 --> 01:02:57.079
countries invested, the case never had a chance to be

1084
01:02:57.159 --> 01:03:02.440
investigated quietly. The intense press attention added pressure on investigators

1085
01:03:02.440 --> 01:03:07.199
and prosecutors, shaping public perception long before the courtroom arguments

1086
01:03:07.239 --> 01:03:11.159
began and turning a single tragedy into a global spectacle.

1087
01:03:11.840 --> 01:03:15.039
In researching this case, I realized how relentless the UK

1088
01:03:15.239 --> 01:03:18.079
tabloids are. Have you ever had any experience with the

1089
01:03:18.199 --> 01:03:22.039
UK tabloids? The Daily Mail is one of them. They

1090
01:03:22.039 --> 01:03:25.400
are maybe a little a little more newsy, but just

1091
01:03:25.440 --> 01:03:32.599
shocking how many there are, and just it's super mean

1092
01:03:32.679 --> 01:03:37.519
spirited and definitely put the cart before the horse. Many times,

1093
01:03:38.280 --> 01:03:41.840
public opinion on Shriann depended heavily on geography, and the

1094
01:03:41.920 --> 01:03:45.519
UK and Sweden people believed he was guilty. In India,

1095
01:03:45.599 --> 01:03:49.000
opinion was mixed but often skeptical of his guilt, and

1096
01:03:49.039 --> 01:03:53.119
in South Africa views were deeply divided, with early suspicion

1097
01:03:53.320 --> 01:03:57.079
giving way to widespread doubt as the investigation unraveled and

1098
01:03:57.119 --> 01:04:01.400
the witness's credibility collapsed, and telling the story. It's hard

1099
01:04:01.440 --> 01:04:05.000
because there are many different accounts depending on who you

1100
01:04:05.119 --> 01:04:08.039
talk to, and you know who who was the shooter,

1101
01:04:08.079 --> 01:04:14.760
who wasn't the shooter. It's it's six months after her murderer,

1102
01:04:15.000 --> 01:04:18.039
Nilam and Vanode, along with the rest of their family,

1103
01:04:18.440 --> 01:04:21.880
filled two boats and scattered Annie's ashes and the peaceful,

1104
01:04:21.920 --> 01:04:25.639
sparkling waters of Lake Vanier and the third largest lake

1105
01:04:25.679 --> 01:04:29.400
in Europe, near their home in Maria stadd Annie had

1106
01:04:29.440 --> 01:04:32.079
spent countless summer days. They were laughing and swimming with

1107
01:04:32.119 --> 01:04:34.840
friends and family, and it remains a place where they

1108
01:04:34.840 --> 01:04:39.280
return to remember happy memories. With so many unanswered questions,

1109
01:04:39.360 --> 01:04:43.400
the Hondojas themselves were unable to grieve properly for Annie,

1110
01:04:43.840 --> 01:04:46.920
but Node described the year since her murder as torture.

1111
01:04:47.760 --> 01:04:50.159
We need to know what happened to our beautiful daughter.

1112
01:04:50.559 --> 01:04:53.039
The only thoughts we have in our head are why

1113
01:04:53.079 --> 01:04:57.199
did she die? We need to know the truth. Before

1114
01:04:57.239 --> 01:05:00.639
the start of the first trial, Nilam Hendocha, who was

1115
01:05:00.679 --> 01:05:04.360
frail from her recent cancer treatment, said, we know it's

1116
01:05:04.400 --> 01:05:07.079
going to be very difficult, but we will do anything

1117
01:05:07.119 --> 01:05:10.679
to get justice. People say time heals wounds, but in

1118
01:05:10.719 --> 01:05:13.360
our case, the wounds are deeper the longer we live

1119
01:05:13.440 --> 01:05:16.920
without answers. Once this is over, we hope we can

1120
01:05:17.000 --> 01:05:20.440
move forward with our lives and our Annie can finally

1121
01:05:20.440 --> 01:05:24.800
be at peace. These people are just the loveliest people.

1122
01:05:24.840 --> 01:05:29.119
They have such a large, loving, supportive family. It was

1123
01:05:29.199 --> 01:05:32.960
really touching to me. They were heartbroken, like it literally

1124
01:05:33.079 --> 01:05:37.719
changed their whole family when they lost Annie. Monday and

1125
01:05:37.880 --> 01:05:42.360
Bolomba was never charged despite being the middleman. Lennox quabe

1126
01:05:42.719 --> 01:05:46.079
signed a confession before the trial started. He was sentenced

1127
01:05:46.119 --> 01:05:48.719
to twenty five years in prison and would be eligible

1128
01:05:48.760 --> 01:05:52.559
for parole after serving sixteen years. As part of his

1129
01:05:52.639 --> 01:05:57.239
plea agreement. He testified against Kohlila Mingheni in August twenty

1130
01:05:57.239 --> 01:06:00.559
twelve at his trial, so Mingeni he is the only

1131
01:06:00.599 --> 01:06:03.679
one who went to trial. At the end of his testimony,

1132
01:06:03.719 --> 01:06:07.360
he turned to venode and begged forgiveness. Mngeni, who was

1133
01:06:07.400 --> 01:06:10.360
in frail health after he'd been diagnosed with a malignant

1134
01:06:10.360 --> 01:06:14.039
brain tumor, maintained that it was Quabei that fired the

1135
01:06:14.079 --> 01:06:17.440
final shot at Anni, but his lawyer didn't put much

1136
01:06:17.480 --> 01:06:20.400
of a defense up. He was found guilty and sentenced

1137
01:06:20.440 --> 01:06:23.400
to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He

1138
01:06:23.519 --> 01:06:27.239
died in prison and October twenty fourteen, at only twenty

1139
01:06:27.320 --> 01:06:32.360
seven years of age. By the time Srian Dewani, thirty four,

1140
01:06:32.679 --> 01:06:36.320
finally stood trial in South Africa in October twenty fourteen,

1141
01:06:36.840 --> 01:06:40.679
nearly four years had passed since Annie's murder. He'd hired

1142
01:06:40.719 --> 01:06:44.599
an excellent legal team. His extradition from the UK had

1143
01:06:44.639 --> 01:06:48.119
been delayed for years due to serious concerns about his

1144
01:06:48.199 --> 01:06:52.159
mental health. He'd been hospitalized, placed on suicide watch, and

1145
01:06:52.239 --> 01:06:57.119
eventually transferred to a high security psychiatric facility. Only after

1146
01:06:57.239 --> 01:07:01.719
lengthy negotiations and assurances regarding his health was he declared

1147
01:07:01.760 --> 01:07:05.119
fit to stand trial. On the first day of the trial,

1148
01:07:05.559 --> 01:07:09.960
Schriann openly admitted in his plea statement that he was bisexual,

1149
01:07:10.559 --> 01:07:14.079
something that he had concealed from both his family and

1150
01:07:14.159 --> 01:07:18.639
from Annie. Prosecutors argued this secret gave him motive to

1151
01:07:18.840 --> 01:07:22.239
escape the marriage, while the defense maintained that his sexuality

1152
01:07:22.320 --> 01:07:25.719
was irrelevant and was being used to prejudice the case

1153
01:07:25.760 --> 01:07:28.840
against him. There was no pressure from the Dewanies for

1154
01:07:28.880 --> 01:07:32.920
Sriann to marry, and no prenup was signed. The defense argued.

1155
01:07:33.760 --> 01:07:37.079
The court reviewed evidence showing that Schriann had visited Gaye

1156
01:07:37.079 --> 01:07:40.960
Horn and Escort websites during the honeymoon and shortly after

1157
01:07:41.000 --> 01:07:45.599
Annie's death. The day after Annie's murder, Schrian had spent

1158
01:07:45.719 --> 01:07:47.559
hours on the website.

1159
01:07:47.639 --> 01:07:50.559
Gatar, I don't what is the website? Gatar.

1160
01:07:51.320 --> 01:07:53.960
I think you can figure that out, Okay. Typically, male

1161
01:07:54.039 --> 01:07:59.639
seeking may judging exactly. Leopold Leser was called to testify,

1162
01:08:00.079 --> 01:08:02.000
but his time on the stand was cut short when

1163
01:08:02.000 --> 01:08:05.519
the judge questioned the relevance of his evidence. She barred

1164
01:08:06.039 --> 01:08:09.599
him from describing a conversation in which Schriann admitted that

1165
01:08:09.639 --> 01:08:11.800
he wasn't sure he wanted to go through with the wedding.

1166
01:08:12.519 --> 01:08:15.519
But the trial ultimately turned on the credibility of the

1167
01:08:15.519 --> 01:08:20.079
state's key witnesses, and this is where the prosecution's case collapsed.

1168
01:08:21.159 --> 01:08:24.560
Although Zola Tongo took the stand, the court also considered

1169
01:08:24.600 --> 01:08:28.319
the earlier statements and confessions of the other men involved,

1170
01:08:28.800 --> 01:08:32.520
and those accounts were riddled with contradictions. They didn't just

1171
01:08:32.560 --> 01:08:35.840
differ on small points, they conflicted on nearly ever, every

1172
01:08:35.920 --> 01:08:40.239
major element of the alleged plot. When Srian supposedly approached them,

1173
01:08:40.359 --> 01:08:43.319
what was said, how the plan was arranged, and who

1174
01:08:43.359 --> 01:08:47.439
carried out which part The judge noted that Tongo's testimony

1175
01:08:47.680 --> 01:08:53.520
quote conflicted in virtually every material respect with a physical evidence,

1176
01:08:53.760 --> 01:08:57.279
and that the shifting versions left the court with no coherent,

1177
01:08:57.640 --> 01:09:03.079
reliable narrative. Boy Ye further undermining the state's case, where

1178
01:09:03.119 --> 01:09:06.199
allegations from two of the men that their confessions had

1179
01:09:06.239 --> 01:09:09.079
been coerced claims that they were beaten with flashlights or

1180
01:09:09.119 --> 01:09:15.000
suffocated with plastic bags. The police vehemently deny these claims,

1181
01:09:15.000 --> 01:09:17.680
but whether they were true or not, the accusations cast

1182
01:09:17.800 --> 01:09:22.119
additional doubt on their statements that the prosecution was relying on.

1183
01:09:23.359 --> 01:09:26.640
Then came the issue of the missing text messages. The

1184
01:09:26.680 --> 01:09:32.000
prosecution insisted that incriminating text messages had been exchanged between

1185
01:09:32.319 --> 01:09:35.119
Shriann and Tongo from the back seat of the taxi,

1186
01:09:35.680 --> 01:09:40.159
but the messages were never found. Schrian's phone was never recovered,

1187
01:09:40.439 --> 01:09:44.119
and sell tower records only proved that messages were sent,

1188
01:09:44.600 --> 01:09:47.720
not what they said. So this part, to me is

1189
01:09:47.840 --> 01:09:51.800
very frustrating. We know that there were many text messages

1190
01:09:51.880 --> 01:09:56.000
sent between Tongo and Shriann between the time that he

1191
01:09:56.000 --> 01:09:58.560
picked them up from the airport until the time of

1192
01:09:59.199 --> 01:10:02.760
the kidnapping. We don't know what the test much is

1193
01:10:02.840 --> 01:10:05.039
They could have been innocuous. It could have been just like, hey,

1194
01:10:05.159 --> 01:10:08.039
pick us up, but there were definitely at the time

1195
01:10:08.079 --> 01:10:10.239
that they were in the backseat of the taxi. There

1196
01:10:10.239 --> 01:10:14.800
were several messages exchanged during that time, so it's hard

1197
01:10:14.920 --> 01:10:17.199
to think that they wouldn't have been.

1198
01:10:17.159 --> 01:10:21.039
Nefarious unless they were like chatting with each other, trying

1199
01:10:21.079 --> 01:10:23.159
to plot, trying to figure out a way out of

1200
01:10:23.199 --> 01:10:26.800
the situation. But yeah, it seems pretty suspicious.

1201
01:10:27.279 --> 01:10:29.800
By the time the state rested on day twenty three,

1202
01:10:30.479 --> 01:10:34.039
the judge found the evidence so unreliable and contradictory that

1203
01:10:34.079 --> 01:10:37.439
she invoked Section one seventy four of South Africa's Criminal

1204
01:10:37.479 --> 01:10:41.319
Procedure Act, ruling that no reasonable court could convict on

1205
01:10:41.359 --> 01:10:45.119
the prosecution's case alone. As a result, the trial was

1206
01:10:45.159 --> 01:10:48.079
dismissed before the defense had to present a single witness.

1207
01:10:48.479 --> 01:10:54.199
Sriandwani was a free man. He left the courtroom legally cleared,

1208
01:10:54.239 --> 01:10:57.119
but far from vindicated. In the public eye. For the

1209
01:10:57.159 --> 01:11:00.960
Hendoja family, the verdict offered no closure or only more

1210
01:11:01.079 --> 01:11:04.039
questions about what really happened to Annie that night, and

1211
01:11:04.159 --> 01:11:06.800
no reliable witnesses left to answer them.

1212
01:11:07.199 --> 01:11:09.359
And when a case is dismissed in this way in

1213
01:11:09.399 --> 01:11:12.439
South Africa is can they retry him at some point

1214
01:11:12.479 --> 01:11:14.800
if they find new evidence or is it done?

1215
01:11:15.199 --> 01:11:18.279
I found that their judicial system seems very similar to ours,

1216
01:11:18.319 --> 01:11:20.760
and he was acquitted, so he cannot be tricked.

1217
01:11:20.479 --> 01:11:23.399
Okay, So it was actually like an acquittal, not just okay, getcha.

1218
01:11:24.039 --> 01:11:27.600
After Shriann was acquitted in twenty fourteen, Annie's family pushed

1219
01:11:27.600 --> 01:11:30.720
for a formal inquest in the UK, hoping it would

1220
01:11:30.760 --> 01:11:34.720
finally answer the lingering questions about her death. An inquest

1221
01:11:34.800 --> 01:11:37.680
was opened in twenty six sixteen, but it soon stalled.

1222
01:11:38.039 --> 01:11:40.840
The key witnesses were all in South Africa and refused

1223
01:11:40.880 --> 01:11:44.640
to participate unless granted immunity, something the UK could not

1224
01:11:44.720 --> 01:11:48.600
offer them without their testimony. The coroner determined that the

1225
01:11:48.600 --> 01:11:52.720
inquest could not reach meaningful findings and formally closed it

1226
01:11:52.760 --> 01:11:57.039
in twenty seventeen. No conclusions were issued beyond acknowledging that

1227
01:11:57.079 --> 01:12:01.359
Annie had been unlawfully killed. The Hendocha family, it was

1228
01:12:01.399 --> 01:12:06.079
another devastating setback, yet another process that ended without answers.

1229
01:12:06.920 --> 01:12:08.479
So frustrated.

1230
01:12:08.479 --> 01:12:11.039
I'm so sad for them because you can see in

1231
01:12:11.199 --> 01:12:15.079
Vanode's eyes especially just heartbroken.

1232
01:12:15.399 --> 01:12:18.840
And just did not have the answers to get closure.

1233
01:12:18.920 --> 01:12:19.880
That's just so hard.

1234
01:12:20.039 --> 01:12:24.279
Yeah. Annie Hendocha deserves to be remembered for the life

1235
01:12:24.319 --> 01:12:27.920
she lived, not just the way it ended. She was warm, witty, thoughtful,

1236
01:12:27.920 --> 01:12:30.880
and deeply loved by her friends and family, who called

1237
01:12:30.880 --> 01:12:33.880
her the glue that held them together. She was quick

1238
01:12:33.920 --> 01:12:36.800
with a compliment and made people feel comfortable and happy

1239
01:12:36.840 --> 01:12:39.760
in her presence. Those closest to her describe a young

1240
01:12:39.800 --> 01:12:43.439
woman full of energy and compassion, someone who brought people

1241
01:12:43.479 --> 01:12:46.800
together and cared fiercely for those around her. She was

1242
01:12:46.840 --> 01:12:49.520
building a future she was excited about, with plans and

1243
01:12:49.600 --> 01:12:53.439
dreams that she should have had years to unfold. Her

1244
01:12:53.560 --> 01:12:55.960
loss has left a profound void in the lives of

1245
01:12:56.000 --> 01:12:59.800
everyone who knew her that they still feel today, haunted

1246
01:12:59.800 --> 01:13:05.079
by the unanswered questions. Rest in peace. Anni Zola Tango

1247
01:13:05.359 --> 01:13:08.399
was released in June twenty twenty two after serving twelve

1248
01:13:08.520 --> 01:13:12.560
years in prison. Annie's family had successfully blocked his release

1249
01:13:12.640 --> 01:13:17.600
during his first parole hearing in twenty twenty. Forensic testing

1250
01:13:17.680 --> 01:13:20.920
has later revealed that Mngeni was actually not the shooter.

1251
01:13:22.359 --> 01:13:25.399
Shrian now lives in London, where he serves as director

1252
01:13:25.479 --> 01:13:29.159
of Evolved Care Group, a company that operates eight nursing

1253
01:13:29.319 --> 01:13:33.439
and care homes across the UK. He is reportedly in

1254
01:13:33.520 --> 01:13:37.279
a long term same sex relationship with a Brazilian photographer,

1255
01:13:37.600 --> 01:13:41.680
and he is on social media in twenty eighteen. This

1256
01:13:41.720 --> 01:13:43.560
was horrible. I was so sad when I read this.

1257
01:13:43.960 --> 01:13:47.239
But Noode was in an industrial accident and his arm

1258
01:13:47.399 --> 01:13:50.920
was ripped off his body. He was airlifted to the

1259
01:13:50.920 --> 01:13:54.520
nearest hospital in hopes of saving his arm. I hadn't

1260
01:13:54.560 --> 01:13:57.760
read any subsequent reports, but they thought that they would

1261
01:13:57.800 --> 01:14:01.279
be able to reattach It. Yeah, he was going to

1262
01:14:01.279 --> 01:14:05.079
be okay. The Handojas were very touched by the support

1263
01:14:05.119 --> 01:14:07.880
that they received from the South African people, who were

1264
01:14:07.880 --> 01:14:13.039
mostly furious when Srian Dowani was acquitted. They felt that

1265
01:14:13.079 --> 01:14:17.720
the investigation was under resourced, while Shrian's strong legal team

1266
01:14:17.760 --> 01:14:20.920
and years of delays stemming from his illness and extradition

1267
01:14:21.439 --> 01:14:24.279
worked at his advantage. By the time he finally went

1268
01:14:24.319 --> 01:14:28.439
to trial, public outrage had cooled, and his eventual acquittal

1269
01:14:28.720 --> 01:14:32.039
left many feeling the process had been a sham. Many

1270
01:14:32.079 --> 01:14:35.840
citizens were offended that Shrian used the nation's crime problem

1271
01:14:35.840 --> 01:14:40.640
as a scapegoat for his own motives, damaging their national

1272
01:14:40.680 --> 01:14:44.640
reputation they had been working so hard to rebuild. People

1273
01:14:44.680 --> 01:14:47.640
thought that he planned the honeymoon in South Africa because

1274
01:14:47.680 --> 01:14:50.520
of the high murder rate, because you know, he felt

1275
01:14:50.520 --> 01:14:51.880
like he could get away with the thing.

1276
01:14:51.920 --> 01:14:52.119
Yeah.

1277
01:14:53.359 --> 01:14:55.960
I want to thank our listener Natasha for all her

1278
01:14:56.000 --> 01:15:00.000
for her help investigating. She pointed out that locals all

1279
01:15:00.039 --> 01:15:03.239
also said his version of events never made sense. No

1280
01:15:03.359 --> 01:15:06.439
tourist or taxi driver would ever visit a township at

1281
01:15:06.560 --> 01:15:10.760
nine pm, And Natasha said that many believe that the

1282
01:15:10.800 --> 01:15:12.960
system failed Annie and her family.

1283
01:15:13.119 --> 01:15:14.199
Yeah, sure seems like it.

1284
01:15:15.359 --> 01:15:18.159
I'm not sure what to think about this case. Was

1285
01:15:18.199 --> 01:15:21.479
it a random carjacking, a plot to kidnap two wealthy

1286
01:15:21.560 --> 01:15:24.840
foreigners and strip them of their cash and valuables, or

1287
01:15:25.039 --> 01:15:28.199
was it a murder plot arranged by Srianne Dewanie.

1288
01:15:28.920 --> 01:15:30.920
I don't know what to think of it either, because

1289
01:15:30.960 --> 01:15:35.079
none of it really makes sense, Like the carjacking doesn't

1290
01:15:35.119 --> 01:15:37.319
make it doesn't make sense that they would kill someone.

1291
01:15:37.359 --> 01:15:41.479
I'm sure it does happen occasionally, but somebody is carjacking

1292
01:15:41.520 --> 01:15:44.279
a car, they're doing it for money, and you wouldn't

1293
01:15:44.279 --> 01:15:46.600
want to get involved in something as serious as a

1294
01:15:46.680 --> 01:15:49.479
murder if you can help it. But at the same time,

1295
01:15:49.720 --> 01:15:52.319
it doesn't make a lot of sense that Sriann would

1296
01:15:53.079 --> 01:15:55.560
have her killed, like right after they got married and

1297
01:15:55.600 --> 01:15:58.279
their marriage wasn't even official yet, so it just seems

1298
01:15:58.800 --> 01:16:00.840
that seems a little weird too, But it seems more

1299
01:16:00.960 --> 01:16:02.880
likely than the carjacking to.

1300
01:16:02.880 --> 01:16:06.520
Me, or you could say, because their marriage wasn't official,

1301
01:16:07.239 --> 01:16:10.960
like he didn't know her anything, you know, like had

1302
01:16:10.960 --> 01:16:14.039
they been officially married, he would have had.

1303
01:16:13.960 --> 01:16:16.560
To have financially, it would have been it would have.

1304
01:16:16.479 --> 01:16:19.720
Been more advantageous for her to be murdered on the honeymoon. Yeah,

1305
01:16:20.159 --> 01:16:23.279
then he would have owed her family. I guess some

1306
01:16:23.359 --> 01:16:24.760
of the estates, right.

1307
01:16:24.840 --> 01:16:27.199
And I guess maybe he felt like, you know, if

1308
01:16:27.239 --> 01:16:31.079
he was either bisexual or gay, like maybe he just

1309
01:16:31.239 --> 01:16:33.319
as of the as things led up to the wedding,

1310
01:16:33.359 --> 01:16:36.479
maybe he started feeling like he was, you know, living

1311
01:16:36.479 --> 01:16:39.159
a double life, or it wasn't the right life that

1312
01:16:39.199 --> 01:16:41.159
he had planned and maybe that's.

1313
01:16:40.920 --> 01:16:45.640
Why, right, or it could give him more time, you know,

1314
01:16:45.920 --> 01:16:48.960
with without coming out to his family, right like, well,

1315
01:16:49.239 --> 01:16:53.279
I'm just grieving my wife, and yeah, I did want

1316
01:16:53.319 --> 01:16:55.680
to go over the evidence one more time quickly, just

1317
01:16:55.800 --> 01:17:00.439
so you can remember the inculplatory and extra culplatory evidence.

1318
01:17:01.560 --> 01:17:05.600
Sriann allegedly told Leopold Lyser that he didn't want to

1319
01:17:05.600 --> 01:17:08.399
marry Annie and needed a way out. He hit his

1320
01:17:08.439 --> 01:17:12.520
bisexuality from Annie and visited gay escort on porn sites

1321
01:17:12.600 --> 01:17:16.800
during the honeymoon. Cc TV showed Sriann entering the hotel

1322
01:17:16.960 --> 01:17:21.319
ten minutes after Annie. Cell tower data showed the text

1323
01:17:21.319 --> 01:17:24.560
messages between Srian and Tongo from the back of the taxi,

1324
01:17:24.600 --> 01:17:27.720
Although we have no idea what they said. Tongo claimed

1325
01:17:27.760 --> 01:17:31.920
that Shriann discussed a staged carjacking, payment and killing Annie.

1326
01:17:32.439 --> 01:17:35.279
Many on Tongo's of Tongo's claims were backed up by

1327
01:17:35.319 --> 01:17:38.920
CCTV footage or cell phone data, so he did lie,

1328
01:17:39.399 --> 01:17:42.479
but a lot of the things he said he didn't

1329
01:17:42.479 --> 01:17:46.199
know that they had that the CCTV footage, but a

1330
01:17:46.199 --> 01:17:49.319
lot of it did fit the footage. So Shrian's account

1331
01:17:49.319 --> 01:17:51.640
of being thrown from the car changed and he had

1332
01:17:51.680 --> 01:17:55.720
no injuries. His statements after the attack shifted, and interviews

1333
01:17:55.760 --> 01:17:59.279
and the media. Annie's family said that she had expressed

1334
01:17:59.319 --> 01:18:02.800
fear and thrown her engagement ring before she remember when

1335
01:18:02.800 --> 01:18:04.840
she took off her engagement ring, and a lot of

1336
01:18:04.840 --> 01:18:06.640
the text messages. I didn't read all of them from

1337
01:18:06.640 --> 01:18:10.840
her cousin did show that she had reservations. There were

1338
01:18:10.880 --> 01:18:16.079
some gaps in the timeline the exculpatory evidence. All key

1339
01:18:16.119 --> 01:18:21.399
witnesses have multiple accounts, and they all lied. Sriann also lied,

1340
01:18:21.439 --> 01:18:25.880
though about certain things. He had emphatically denied any questions

1341
01:18:25.880 --> 01:18:31.720
about his sexuality. Two suspects were allegedly beaten. The incriminating

1342
01:18:31.800 --> 01:18:35.479
text messages from the back of the taxi were never recovered.

1343
01:18:36.239 --> 01:18:39.239
There is no forensic or physical evidence linking Sriann to

1344
01:18:39.359 --> 01:18:44.159
planning anything, no DNA fingerprints, no payments or digital trace

1345
01:18:44.960 --> 01:18:47.680
his defense I forgot to mention this set that the

1346
01:18:47.800 --> 01:18:50.960
money that he had exchanged was he wanted to surprise

1347
01:18:51.039 --> 01:18:54.000
Annie with a helicopter tour and he had to pay cash,

1348
01:18:54.479 --> 01:18:57.920
and that's why he needed the money. All the men

1349
01:18:58.039 --> 01:19:01.720
that were accused light under oath. There was no financial

1350
01:19:01.760 --> 01:19:05.119
motive for Annie's murder. We talked about this a little

1351
01:19:05.119 --> 01:19:09.520
bit before, but the unlikelihood that Sriann met Tango and then,

1352
01:19:09.760 --> 01:19:11.600
you know, moments later it was like, hey, you know,

1353
01:19:11.640 --> 01:19:12.960
can you help me kill my wife?

1354
01:19:13.039 --> 01:19:13.239
Right?

1355
01:19:13.920 --> 01:19:18.079
The honeymoon photos and witness accounts showed normal behavior. There

1356
01:19:18.119 --> 01:19:22.159
was a lot of footage of Shriann and Annie, and

1357
01:19:22.239 --> 01:19:26.399
they looked pretty happy. They didn't they looked not very romantic,

1358
01:19:26.520 --> 01:19:29.439
but they were smiling and laughing together. Yeah, although I

1359
01:19:29.479 --> 01:19:31.439
did notice in a lot of the footage that I

1360
01:19:31.439 --> 01:19:35.319
saw that Shrian was often walking ahead of Annie.

1361
01:19:35.439 --> 01:19:38.880
Okay, so a lot of what you listed as exculpatory evidence,

1362
01:19:39.479 --> 01:19:43.119
it's more that they didn't have solid evidence to convict

1363
01:19:43.199 --> 01:19:47.880
him less. It's less that they had other potential you know, motives,

1364
01:19:47.960 --> 01:19:51.760
or other potential suspects or things like that. So I guess,

1365
01:19:52.159 --> 01:19:54.279
looking back on my earlier statement that I really have

1366
01:19:54.359 --> 01:19:57.279
no idea, I now feel a little more strongly that

1367
01:19:58.079 --> 01:20:01.000
Srian probably was involved in this.

1368
01:20:01.960 --> 01:20:04.560
If I had to guess, I would also agree that

1369
01:20:04.600 --> 01:20:07.479
Srian probably had something to do with it. One thing

1370
01:20:07.520 --> 01:20:11.199
that I have a hard time with is Tango and

1371
01:20:11.359 --> 01:20:15.479
the taxi mm hmm. Like he wasn't an official taxi service.

1372
01:20:15.479 --> 01:20:18.039
I think he was just kind of taking money money

1373
01:20:18.079 --> 01:20:21.640
under the table, yep. But why would he allow a

1374
01:20:21.760 --> 01:20:24.199
murder to take place in his taxi?

1375
01:20:24.880 --> 01:20:25.159
Yeah?

1376
01:20:25.199 --> 01:20:26.800
And I don't think it was even his car. It

1377
01:20:26.840 --> 01:20:28.560
was his wives or a girlfriends or something.

1378
01:20:28.680 --> 01:20:31.800
But that is A good A good point. That's seems

1379
01:20:31.880 --> 01:20:32.520
very strange.

1380
01:20:32.600 --> 01:20:35.560
Yeah, I don't understand why he would agree to do

1381
01:20:35.600 --> 01:20:36.920
that for so little money.

1382
01:20:37.000 --> 01:20:40.640
Yeah, maybe the murder taking place in the car wasn't

1383
01:20:40.640 --> 01:20:44.079
something he had planned. Maybe it was something that happened

1384
01:20:44.119 --> 01:20:45.960
that he was not on board with.

1385
01:20:46.199 --> 01:20:49.199
Right, It's possible that Annie was fighting back, especially after

1386
01:20:49.279 --> 01:20:53.000
Shrian left the vehicle, right, and they didn't know what

1387
01:20:53.000 --> 01:20:55.239
to do with her, because she does strike me as

1388
01:20:55.359 --> 01:20:58.920
you know, a powerful woman who might fight back. And

1389
01:21:00.119 --> 01:21:04.640
the gunshot was maybe five or six centimeters from her face,

1390
01:21:04.760 --> 01:21:06.960
So it's possible that, you know, she got in their

1391
01:21:06.960 --> 01:21:09.560
face and fought men. You know, they just shot her

1392
01:21:09.560 --> 01:21:11.560
in the four you know, shot her in the I'm

1393
01:21:11.560 --> 01:21:15.640
sorry neck, right, because she was fighting back so hard. Yeah,

1394
01:21:15.880 --> 01:21:18.319
So you don't think justice was Do you think justice

1395
01:21:18.359 --> 01:21:18.760
was served?

1396
01:21:18.880 --> 01:21:22.199
No? I mean it's very frustrating, you know the fact

1397
01:21:22.239 --> 01:21:25.479
that all of these men had different testimony, and it

1398
01:21:25.520 --> 01:21:28.479
seems like the decision made by the judge in this

1399
01:21:28.560 --> 01:21:31.800
case was probably not the wrong decision, but it's I

1400
01:21:31.800 --> 01:21:33.920
don't know if it was the investigation was botched, or

1401
01:21:33.960 --> 01:21:38.279
that so much time had passed that their stories started differing.

1402
01:21:38.640 --> 01:21:41.680
But no, I think justice was definitely not served.

1403
01:21:41.960 --> 01:21:45.399
Do you think that Shriann's mental health issues were fabricated

1404
01:21:45.560 --> 01:21:49.479
or real? Remember that he fought extradition for four years

1405
01:21:49.520 --> 01:21:50.720
because of his mental health.

1406
01:21:50.920 --> 01:21:52.000
Yeah, it wouldn't be surprising.

1407
01:21:52.319 --> 01:21:54.920
They had a pretty good team of lawyers, so I

1408
01:21:54.960 --> 01:21:57.720
think that I'm sure his distress was real in the beginning,

1409
01:21:57.800 --> 01:22:01.680
but the four years, you know, was probably extreme.

1410
01:22:01.720 --> 01:22:03.479
I mean, I have no idea, but yeah, it sounds

1411
01:22:03.800 --> 01:22:06.680
very plausible that that was something that was just used

1412
01:22:06.800 --> 01:22:08.680
to delay as long as possible.

1413
01:22:09.520 --> 01:22:13.720
So if Shrian didn't plot Annie's murder, the alternate theory

1414
01:22:13.760 --> 01:22:19.039
would be that Zola Tongo arranged the kidnapping and robbing.

1415
01:22:19.600 --> 01:22:22.960
Robbing the tourists, right, And that doesn't seem super plausible

1416
01:22:23.000 --> 01:22:25.960
to me either. Something that I'm not sure if I expressed,

1417
01:22:25.960 --> 01:22:29.760
like these four men they weren't like in a gang together.

1418
01:22:30.920 --> 01:22:35.359
The only one that had a record, I believe, was Bengeni,

1419
01:22:36.800 --> 01:22:40.479
and they were loosely associated like Sola Tango only knew

1420
01:22:40.880 --> 01:22:45.520
the hotel receptionist person and the hotel receptionist person heal,

1421
01:22:45.640 --> 01:22:48.319
I'm sorry, I don't want to say their names wrong anymore.

1422
01:22:49.600 --> 01:22:53.760
She knew Quabe but he didn't know in bengeny Okay.

1423
01:22:54.000 --> 01:22:56.640
So yeah, it's very just not like they were a

1424
01:22:56.640 --> 01:22:58.520
gang that was working together, right.

1425
01:22:58.840 --> 01:23:01.039
And it's not like Sola is going to arrange to

1426
01:23:01.119 --> 01:23:05.159
have his own car carjacked, So that doesn't make any sense.

1427
01:23:05.199 --> 01:23:08.119
So yeah, it but the fact that the car was

1428
01:23:09.399 --> 01:23:13.439
left there was strange too because a lot of people said, like, well,

1429
01:23:13.479 --> 01:23:16.199
normally in South Africa that car would have been right,

1430
01:23:16.239 --> 01:23:17.960
it would have been dismantled for parts.

1431
01:23:18.119 --> 01:23:20.359
Yeah, you would think it burned out.

1432
01:23:20.720 --> 01:23:24.319
Well, that's the heartbreaking story of Annie Hindoka and Srian

1433
01:23:24.399 --> 01:23:28.560
do Wani. I wanted to mention a few sources. I

1434
01:23:28.640 --> 01:23:31.439
didn't have time to read the entire books, but I

1435
01:23:31.520 --> 01:23:34.479
read part of a book called Bitter Dawn, The Truth

1436
01:23:34.680 --> 01:23:38.760
about the Murder of Annie Dowani, and the book by

1437
01:23:39.159 --> 01:23:43.479
Venode Annie do Wanni, a Father's Story. I also watched

1438
01:23:43.680 --> 01:23:48.039
a really good documentary from HBO called Annie the Honeymoon Murder.

1439
01:23:48.399 --> 01:23:57.960
It's four parts and I thought it was really well done.

1440
01:23:59.199 --> 01:24:00.680
So do you want to think thank all of our

1441
01:24:00.760 --> 01:24:03.239
kind listeners for their birthday wishes? A lot of people

1442
01:24:03.560 --> 01:24:04.720
wished you a happy birthday.

1443
01:24:04.760 --> 01:24:08.119
It is so nice. I appreciate it. So much. It's

1444
01:24:08.239 --> 01:24:11.239
just yeah, it's very it's heartwarming for me when people

1445
01:24:11.279 --> 01:24:14.720
reach out stuff like that, and it's Yeah.

1446
01:24:14.079 --> 01:24:17.359
It was a fun week too because Spotify wrapped, came out,

1447
01:24:17.640 --> 01:24:22.239
and just so grateful for everyone who supports us and

1448
01:24:22.279 --> 01:24:24.840
listens to us and tagged us and showed us that

1449
01:24:24.920 --> 01:24:28.760
they are truly, truly spending a lot of minutes listening

1450
01:24:28.800 --> 01:24:31.880
to our podcast. Although I think some of them are

1451
01:24:31.960 --> 01:24:33.520
during their sleep hours.

1452
01:24:33.720 --> 01:24:35.239
Well, I had to do the math on a couple

1453
01:24:35.239 --> 01:24:38.319
that you shared with me. That's many, many hours.

1454
01:24:38.359 --> 01:24:40.520
That's a lot of hours. You're listening to us, like

1455
01:24:40.640 --> 01:24:43.880
all the episodes more than once, which is probably because

1456
01:24:43.880 --> 01:24:47.439
you're sleeping through them. We'll take it. Download. A download

1457
01:24:47.560 --> 01:24:50.239
is a download. So one more sad story about the

1458
01:24:50.279 --> 01:24:51.079
cherry chip cake.

1459
01:24:51.239 --> 01:24:52.520
Oh yeah, I.

1460
01:24:52.520 --> 01:24:55.720
Was really really angry. I don't know if I've been

1461
01:24:55.720 --> 01:24:58.840
that angry in a while, because I'd ordered it a

1462
01:24:58.880 --> 01:25:00.760
couple of weeks in advance, where it should have had

1463
01:25:00.760 --> 01:25:03.439
time to get here, and I'm watching and looking at

1464
01:25:03.520 --> 01:25:06.960
you know, the tracking. Sometimes people like they make the

1465
01:25:07.039 --> 01:25:09.479
label which makes you think that oh it's been shipped

1466
01:25:09.479 --> 01:25:11.960
but exactly for at least a week, and they didn't

1467
01:25:12.000 --> 01:25:16.119
ship it and boy, and it didn't come in time

1468
01:25:16.199 --> 01:25:17.199
for your birthday.

1469
01:25:17.520 --> 01:25:20.359
You did make a very nice French silk pie, though appreciated.

1470
01:25:20.439 --> 01:25:23.640
It was all right, but I'd made the frosting and

1471
01:25:23.680 --> 01:25:25.800
that's you know, because I was like ready, I'd made

1472
01:25:25.880 --> 01:25:28.960
the cake crumbs that I like to put between the layers,

1473
01:25:29.439 --> 01:25:30.479
and that didn't come either.

1474
01:25:30.720 --> 01:25:31.479
Unacceptable.

1475
01:25:31.680 --> 01:25:33.159
Yeah, I'm ready for next year.

1476
01:25:33.199 --> 01:25:33.439
Though.

1477
01:25:33.600 --> 01:25:36.960
We're gonna nail it next year. We sure one more

1478
01:25:37.000 --> 01:25:38.880
thing I wanted to mention before we go. In the

1479
01:25:38.920 --> 01:25:43.039
news this week, there was a story Travis Kelcey I

1480
01:25:43.079 --> 01:25:46.840
think during his podcast, was interviewing George Clooney and they

1481
01:25:46.840 --> 01:25:49.800
were talking about marriage. George Clooney has been married to

1482
01:25:49.920 --> 01:25:53.039
his lovely wife a Mall for I think ten years

1483
01:25:53.119 --> 01:25:56.520
or so, and Travis Kelsey has been with Taylor for

1484
01:25:56.640 --> 01:25:57.520
two and a half years.

1485
01:25:57.560 --> 01:25:57.760
Issh.

1486
01:25:58.359 --> 01:26:01.119
They were talking about how they don't fight and people

1487
01:26:01.479 --> 01:26:06.000
both yeah and George Clean, I mean George Clean was like,

1488
01:26:06.000 --> 01:26:07.600
what do I have to fight about? You know, my

1489
01:26:07.680 --> 01:26:10.399
wife and I agree on most things, and you know,

1490
01:26:11.079 --> 01:26:14.600
I don't believe it. We have money, and then Travis

1491
01:26:14.680 --> 01:26:17.640
Kelsey said, yeah, I mean Taylor and I have never

1492
01:26:17.720 --> 01:26:21.520
had a fight. Either, and people online were saying, you

1493
01:26:21.520 --> 01:26:23.920
don't have a real relationship, then I don't believe it.

1494
01:26:24.000 --> 01:26:25.159
Blah blah blah.

1495
01:26:25.199 --> 01:26:26.920
I'm curious what your take is on that.

1496
01:26:27.199 --> 01:26:29.920
I kind of agree with people online, like if you

1497
01:26:30.119 --> 01:26:33.039
if you have truly been together for two years and

1498
01:26:33.079 --> 01:26:35.640
you haven't had a fight, that's not a good sign.

1499
01:26:36.000 --> 01:26:36.920
That's interesting.

1500
01:26:37.000 --> 01:26:39.640
Why do you think that, because you're going to disagree

1501
01:26:39.640 --> 01:26:41.880
about things, and you can fight in a way that's

1502
01:26:41.920 --> 01:26:46.600
respectful and you know, mature, but you're gonna have I

1503
01:26:46.680 --> 01:26:47.920
just I just can't believe it.

1504
01:26:47.920 --> 01:26:51.119
That's funny because I disagree with you, really and I'm

1505
01:26:51.119 --> 01:26:53.000
going to have a fight with you. I guess we

1506
01:26:53.199 --> 01:26:54.720
really don't fight, but.

1507
01:26:54.680 --> 01:26:56.680
We have, and we did in the for you know,

1508
01:26:56.720 --> 01:26:59.439
I mean, we've made there for a long time, right,

1509
01:26:59.439 --> 01:26:59.800
but we have.

1510
01:27:00.279 --> 01:27:01.960
I don't think we fought very much in the beginning

1511
01:27:01.960 --> 01:27:03.960
at all. No, I guess we did the first year,

1512
01:27:04.079 --> 01:27:06.239
but I guess we don't fight as much now as

1513
01:27:06.279 --> 01:27:09.039
we did then. Sure, Yeah, yeah, I was a little

1514
01:27:09.079 --> 01:27:12.000
more fiery. I think you've warned me, you've worn me down.

1515
01:27:13.279 --> 01:27:16.199
I'm a shadow, but I used to be, which I'm

1516
01:27:16.239 --> 01:27:21.039
grateful for for the most part. But in George Clooney's situation,

1517
01:27:21.199 --> 01:27:23.920
and you know Travis and Taylor, Like, what do you

1518
01:27:23.920 --> 01:27:26.279
fight about when you have billions of dollars?

1519
01:27:26.359 --> 01:27:29.159
Like? Yeah, But I think it's because not all fights

1520
01:27:29.199 --> 01:27:32.399
are about money. I would think that all of those people,

1521
01:27:32.800 --> 01:27:34.840
except maybe a Mall I don't really know that much

1522
01:27:34.880 --> 01:27:37.760
about her, but all those people have pretty big egos.

1523
01:27:38.000 --> 01:27:40.600
And I think when you have a big ego, Look

1524
01:27:40.640 --> 01:27:45.239
who's talking. I think when you have a big ego,

1525
01:27:45.960 --> 01:27:48.319
you're likely to get into fights about things because you

1526
01:27:48.319 --> 01:27:50.960
were like, I'm always right about things like I just

1527
01:27:51.119 --> 01:27:52.960
you know, I'm not talking about myself.

1528
01:27:53.319 --> 01:27:56.000
Do you think has a bigger ego? Rich or Tina?

1529
01:27:57.239 --> 01:27:58.279
I probably me?

1530
01:28:01.680 --> 01:28:06.359
No comment. I forgot to ask you one important question

1531
01:28:06.520 --> 01:28:11.079
regarding the case. So Surean claimed that he was forced

1532
01:28:11.119 --> 01:28:13.680
out of the back of the taxi at gunpoint and

1533
01:28:13.840 --> 01:28:18.199
left Annie behind you, what would you do in that situation.

1534
01:28:20.039 --> 01:28:22.000
I know what you would do, but I'm curious what

1535
01:28:22.039 --> 01:28:24.039
you would what you would say you would do.

1536
01:28:24.319 --> 01:28:27.760
I would jump in front of that gun and wrestle

1537
01:28:27.800 --> 01:28:29.680
it away from the person and say you are not

1538
01:28:30.279 --> 01:28:31.159
taking my way.

1539
01:28:31.199 --> 01:28:35.479
And that's where we will leave this discussion. Again. Thank

1540
01:28:35.520 --> 01:28:40.720
you to Natasha for recommending this case the popcorn. It's delicious.

1541
01:28:40.880 --> 01:28:43.239
I don't think I'm gonna make popcorn like this every time,

1542
01:28:43.520 --> 01:28:45.640
but I've been munching on it during the show. It's

1543
01:28:45.680 --> 01:28:46.119
really good.

1544
01:28:46.159 --> 01:28:46.359
Yeah.

1545
01:28:46.399 --> 01:28:48.840
So again, it's just like, put just a few spices

1546
01:28:48.840 --> 01:28:53.039
in there, like heavy on the smoked paprika, salt, sugar,

1547
01:28:53.399 --> 01:28:56.079
little cayenne pepper and garlic powder, and I think it

1548
01:28:56.159 --> 01:28:59.119
was great. So you were going to put a link

1549
01:28:59.199 --> 01:29:00.920
to our mercy are in the show notes.

1550
01:29:01.000 --> 01:29:01.560
I will do that.

1551
01:29:01.680 --> 01:29:04.359
Please don't feel obligated. A lot of people have asked

1552
01:29:04.359 --> 01:29:07.319
throughout the year, do you guys have merch and I've

1553
01:29:07.319 --> 01:29:09.399
said no, and this whole time we actually did.

1554
01:29:09.479 --> 01:29:11.800
I don't know who wouldn't be thrilled on Christmas morning

1555
01:29:11.800 --> 01:29:14.000
to open up a Love Mary Kill hoodie.

1556
01:29:14.000 --> 01:29:16.039
