The Tragic Death of Lina Kaufman

The Tragic Death of Lina Kaufman

What happens when a sudden, tragic death turns a happy marriage into a five-year legal nightmare?

On Wednesday, November 7, 2007, a frantic 911 call shattered the morning quiet in the gated community of Aventura Lakes, Florida. Real estate developer Adam Kaufman called dispatchers, his voice breaking as he reported finding his 33-year-old wife, Lina, unresponsive on their bathroom floor. When paramedics arrived, they found a chaotic scene. Despite desperate lifesaving measures, Lina was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. She was a perfectly healthy mother of two who had simply gone to bed the night before—leaving her sudden passing a complete shock and a total mystery.

But the mystery quickly shifted into an investigation when hospital staff spotted distinct marks across Lina’s neck. What followed was an intense courtroom battle pitting top forensic experts against each other, forcing a jury to decide: Was Lina murdered by her husband, or did she suffer a catastrophic, sudden medical emergency?

Tina and Rich’s Takeaways

Rich

"I definitely agree with the jury's verdict. There wasn't enough to convict him. I do have some question about whether he actually killed her or not. A lot of times I think when somebody is strangled, it leaves hand marks around their neck. I never read anything about any kind of hand marks or prints around her neck. There just didn't seem to be a ton of evidence. I think the evidence of the damage to her throat could be explained by the attempted intubations and the medical procedures."

Tina

"If she was being strangled to such a degree that the damage went through all the layers of her neck, the hyoid bone, which is pretty easily broken being intact, I think is a little bit of evidence there too. There was no history of abuse. Even an unkind word, really. If there had been more red flags, then I might have leaned a little more towards potential guilt. Really the biggest red flag to me is he started dating six weeks after. Although that gives me a huge ick factor. I think that a lot of men just don't like to be alone and you have two young kids. That is not cool, but I feel like we judge people on that a lot until you're in that situation."

What Do You Think?

After eight hours of deliberation, the jury determined that the state couldn't clear the high bar of reasonable doubt, and Adam Kaufman walked out of the courthouse a free man. But the debate over what truly happened in that bathroom continues.
