Deadly Love Triangle: Moriah Wilson, Colin Strickland and Kaitlin Armstrong

Moriah “Mo” Wilson, 25, was the breakout star in the world of gravel cycling before she was brutally murdered in Austin, Texas on May 11, 2022. Colin Strickland, Mo’s former love interest, was the last person to see her alive but traffic cameras confirmed he was not near her at the time of her death. Suspicion quickly fell upon Colin’s long-suffering girlfriend, Kaitlin Armstrong, when a neighbor’s doorbell camera captured an image of her vehicle at the scene of the crime. Before Kaitlin could be charged, she fled the country and led US Marshals on an international chase.

00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:02.560
Hi, I'm Tina, and I'm
rich. And if there's one thing we've
2
00:00:02.600 --> 00:00:05.559
learned in over twenty years of marriage, it's that some days you'll feel like
3
00:00:05.679 --> 00:00:09.359
killing your wife, and some days
you'll feel like killing your husband. Welcome
4
00:00:09.560 --> 00:00:28.519
to love, Mary kill Hey Rich. How are you? I'm pretty good?
5
00:00:28.519 --> 00:00:31.399
How are you? I'm pretty a
little stressed, but I'm pretty good.
6
00:00:31.399 --> 00:00:33.960
I think we're both a little stressed
right now. I think of you.
7
00:00:34.200 --> 00:00:36.920
Especially if you ask any woman this
time of year how she's feeling,
8
00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:42.840
she's gonna be like, I'm great, great, fabulous. Yeah, there's
9
00:00:42.840 --> 00:00:45.359
a lot to do. Yeah,
there's a lot to do. I'm getting
10
00:00:45.399 --> 00:00:49.560
it done. You sure are.
How do you eat an elephant one bite
11
00:00:49.600 --> 00:00:53.719
at a time? Exactly? Well, you probably really should eat an elephants.
12
00:00:54.320 --> 00:00:57.520
Why would anyone eat an elephant?
Ridiculous? Well, if you're really
13
00:00:57.600 --> 00:01:03.120
hungry. How are your Christmas preparations
going? They're going great? You were
14
00:01:03.159 --> 00:01:07.799
really You put some lights out on
the house. I did, not on
15
00:01:07.840 --> 00:01:11.599
the house, not on the tree, on the rounding the house. Our
16
00:01:11.640 --> 00:01:17.280
house is kind of tall and peaky, and I wouldn't want you to put
17
00:01:17.359 --> 00:01:19.879
lights on the house. It would
be really hazardous, probably, but our
18
00:01:19.959 --> 00:01:22.959
trees are getting bigger, and so
it's taking more and more lights every year
19
00:01:22.959 --> 00:01:26.159
if I put them on our trees. So yeah, our house is new
20
00:01:26.200 --> 00:01:29.319
words. We bought it when it
was what three or four years old,
21
00:01:29.439 --> 00:01:32.560
and now it's I don't know,
six seven years old, and so yeah,
22
00:01:32.599 --> 00:01:34.799
the trees are growing. Well.
We have all these pine trees that
23
00:01:34.840 --> 00:01:38.359
look just like Christmas trees. So
I like to decorate them. But it's
24
00:01:38.400 --> 00:01:42.239
taken more and more lights. I
don't think I left you any for you
25
00:01:42.519 --> 00:01:44.640
say they really, God, there's
no lights. We need to keep a
26
00:01:44.680 --> 00:01:49.680
separate man. Speaking of Christmas made
you, it's something I made you a
27
00:01:49.680 --> 00:01:53.519
cookie, you made me a cook. I decided that for the episodes for
28
00:01:53.519 --> 00:01:56.560
the rest of the year, we
should make Christmas Christmas cookie. Okay,
29
00:01:57.359 --> 00:02:00.920
so this is a wait hold on. I mean, look, I've made
30
00:02:00.959 --> 00:02:04.959
them before, but you probably don't
remember. I do you do's? I
31
00:02:05.079 --> 00:02:07.439
never forget a cookie. What's it
called? Oh I don't know what it's
32
00:02:07.480 --> 00:02:12.840
called. I remember the taste of
it, and the Christmas Swig cookie and
33
00:02:12.960 --> 00:02:15.039
Swig cookies. I think they're cute. They're just you take them. They're
34
00:02:15.080 --> 00:02:17.840
circular, and you take a glass
and you press it down a glass that
35
00:02:17.960 --> 00:02:20.960
has sugar on it, and you
press it down and so it kind of
36
00:02:21.000 --> 00:02:23.599
spreads out the cookie, and it
kind of looks a little rustic. Yeah,
37
00:02:23.080 --> 00:02:25.800
and then you put like that,
I'm touching your cookie before I give
38
00:02:25.800 --> 00:02:30.919
it to you. And this one
has you're supposed to put Andy's, you
39
00:02:30.919 --> 00:02:32.800
know, like Andy's mints, but
they're like they have baking chips and I
40
00:02:32.840 --> 00:02:38.479
can never find them. So I
got the Andy's Peppermint crunch candies and I
41
00:02:38.599 --> 00:02:43.360
just cut them up. Or you
could also just use a crushed up candy
42
00:02:43.400 --> 00:02:46.520
cane. But it's like a short
bread cookie that has this peppermint crunch in
43
00:02:46.560 --> 00:02:50.400
it, and then there's pink frosting
on the top. Can you hear me
44
00:02:50.439 --> 00:02:53.960
salvating? I mean, I made
it this morning, and I don't know.
45
00:02:53.960 --> 00:02:57.360
I think it's pretty good. I
keep touching it, but it's a
46
00:02:57.360 --> 00:03:00.800
little little over because I only made
it wildly. You only made one.
47
00:03:00.080 --> 00:03:02.120
I mean, I made a whole
badge, but I only made one for
48
00:03:02.199 --> 00:03:06.280
you to try because I'm trying not
to eat as many cookies. So all
49
00:03:06.360 --> 00:03:08.479
right, let's take a quick break
and you can sink your teeth into this
50
00:03:08.520 --> 00:03:19.800
pink cookie. Alrighty, Well,
as always, you are the cookie master.
51
00:03:20.159 --> 00:03:22.919
Really you like them? Yeah,
what's not to like? So I
52
00:03:22.919 --> 00:03:24.960
should explain really quick, and I'm
going to get this wrong. Our Utah
53
00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:29.680
friends are gonna are going to correct
me. But I think Swig cookies are
54
00:03:29.719 --> 00:03:32.159
a Utah thing. And there was
a gas station or some sort of mart
55
00:03:32.240 --> 00:03:36.960
that was like you could get great
like they had a great drink selection mm
56
00:03:37.039 --> 00:03:40.000
hmm. The name, so the
name Swig came from that. And then
57
00:03:40.120 --> 00:03:45.039
they had these cookies that I don't
know if the founder of the store or
58
00:03:45.039 --> 00:03:49.800
someone made these cookies. So that's
where this Swig cookie comes from. Nice.
59
00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:53.199
I like the peppermint flavor. It's
very uh, it's very Christmas y.
60
00:03:53.560 --> 00:03:55.680
Yeah, they're good. They're good. There. I like a frosting,
61
00:03:55.840 --> 00:03:59.800
a frosted cookie. I forgot to
adorn the top with more of the
62
00:03:59.800 --> 00:04:04.400
power. That's okay. Well,
before you get into today's case, a
63
00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:08.960
quick update. You posted about it
on Instagram today, But quick update on
64
00:04:08.960 --> 00:04:14.360
the case. We covered gosh in
June several months ago. Tex MacIvor he
65
00:04:15.240 --> 00:04:18.600
was convicted of killing his wife Diane. If you remember it was kind of
66
00:04:18.759 --> 00:04:21.560
remember it. Yeah, they were
in the car together. Yeah. She
67
00:04:21.680 --> 00:04:24.639
was in the front, he was
in the back, and he was like,
68
00:04:24.720 --> 00:04:27.920
oh, the gun just went off. It was crazy. He fell
69
00:04:27.959 --> 00:04:30.639
asleep in the back seat of the
yr. He was holding the gun because
70
00:04:30.639 --> 00:04:32.319
he thought it was a bad neighborhood
they were driving through. Anyway, he
71
00:04:32.360 --> 00:04:35.480
got convicted, and I think at
the end of the case I mentioned that
72
00:04:35.759 --> 00:04:40.879
he had appealed it to the Supreme
Court and they actually came back and said,
73
00:04:41.680 --> 00:04:46.439
yeah, you the jury should have
been given the option of involuntary manslaughter,
74
00:04:46.480 --> 00:04:48.920
which they weren't given that option,
and so he has a retrial.
75
00:04:49.079 --> 00:04:54.720
He was still in prison because he
had he was convicted of other charges like,
76
00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:59.519
uh, subordination of perjury, which
he meant he was like talking to
77
00:04:59.519 --> 00:05:01.079
the witness is trying to get them
to say what he wanted them to say.
78
00:05:01.399 --> 00:05:05.639
So he was still in jail,
but the trial actually started today,
79
00:05:05.680 --> 00:05:10.360
but then it got postponed again.
So yeah, I posted that, and
80
00:05:10.399 --> 00:05:12.800
you told me, oh, it's
postponed again. Yeah, I just saw
81
00:05:12.800 --> 00:05:15.920
an article. It was like they
were there was a dispute over what evidence
82
00:05:15.920 --> 00:05:20.480
would be allowed and postponed indefinitely.
Yeah. Yeah, so who knows when
83
00:05:20.560 --> 00:05:24.560
it'll be you know, the wheels
of justice. That's crazy. What remind
84
00:05:24.639 --> 00:05:28.800
me what he was convicted of and
how long his sentence was. He was
85
00:05:28.839 --> 00:05:31.680
convicted of felony murder, which carries
a life sentence, So he was yeah,
86
00:05:31.839 --> 00:05:33.879
I mean he's like eighty years old. Now I think, oh,
87
00:05:33.959 --> 00:05:36.680
is he really? Yeah? Well, I don't know if that makes sense
88
00:05:36.720 --> 00:05:42.040
to have him stand for another trial. If yeah, I mean, who
89
00:05:42.120 --> 00:05:46.560
knows what would be the sentence for
involuntary manslaughter. I really don't know.
90
00:05:46.839 --> 00:05:48.319
I mean, but if he has
another trial, he could be found not
91
00:05:48.399 --> 00:05:53.759
guilty even so that's true. Yeah, I'm sure for him it's worth it.
92
00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:58.120
So we had talked about this a
little bit, you and I personally,
93
00:05:58.480 --> 00:06:00.800
but we haven't talked about it the
podcast. We're trying to keep our
94
00:06:00.839 --> 00:06:06.279
openings as short and concise as possible
because the opening banter is a little polarizing
95
00:06:06.319 --> 00:06:11.120
between people, and so we had
decided maybe five minutes of just you know,
96
00:06:11.199 --> 00:06:15.839
the snack time and just greeting is
probably good. I know, some
97
00:06:15.879 --> 00:06:19.000
people don't like banter at all,
and some people you know, could listen
98
00:06:20.040 --> 00:06:25.720
to it longer, really, I
know, So we just decided that five
99
00:06:25.720 --> 00:06:28.920
minutes is a happy medium. Also, I think I see an Amazon truck
100
00:06:29.160 --> 00:06:33.399
pulling up and a there's also a
Prime. Oh wait, there's a there's
101
00:06:33.399 --> 00:06:39.759
two Amazon trucks. Are you kidding? Okay, so this I just they're
102
00:06:39.759 --> 00:06:42.720
going to run into each other.
Are they both at our house? Yeah,
103
00:06:42.759 --> 00:06:46.680
they're both ones backing up. Maybe
one broke down or something. Oh
104
00:06:46.759 --> 00:06:48.600
has it been? I don't know. Okay, I just wanted to mention
105
00:06:48.680 --> 00:06:51.600
really quick. If you have an
Alexa, and I think even if you
106
00:06:51.639 --> 00:06:57.439
don't have an Alexa, if you
say Alexa, think my Amazon driver,
107
00:06:57.600 --> 00:07:00.560
they get a tip every time.
Is that true? It is not like
108
00:07:00.680 --> 00:07:02.399
I thought maybe that was like an
urban legend thing that people. Oh no,
109
00:07:03.120 --> 00:07:06.160
if you I'll show you later.
Yeah, just say to Alexa,
110
00:07:06.199 --> 00:07:12.000
Alexa tip or think my driver.
And then I think that they have like
111
00:07:12.319 --> 00:07:15.680
they have five million reserved or something
like that. So maybe once that money
112
00:07:15.759 --> 00:07:18.399
is gone they won't do it anymore. But I try to do it.
113
00:07:18.680 --> 00:07:24.160
Well, yes, I have to
do it a few times, and then
114
00:07:24.199 --> 00:07:29.480
we have a little like a snack
bin because we we do kind of show
115
00:07:29.519 --> 00:07:32.800
your appreciation for those drivers that they
work really hard. Her mail lady,
116
00:07:32.800 --> 00:07:36.000
I hope she doesn't listen to our
podcast. But we have a big mailbox
117
00:07:36.160 --> 00:07:40.920
and she jams that. She doesn't
care how big of a package it is.
118
00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:44.759
She's not going to get it in
that mail she dies and we're kind
119
00:07:44.759 --> 00:07:48.680
of laxed about checking the mailbox.
And anyway, today she can't come up
120
00:07:48.720 --> 00:07:51.199
at the house. Oh did she
really? Yeah, and she's she can
121
00:07:51.240 --> 00:07:55.759
get a little grumpy. And she
took a snack, so I was like,
122
00:07:55.800 --> 00:07:59.199
Okay, well she had a snack, that's nice. I was gonna
123
00:07:59.199 --> 00:08:01.839
put some fresh bak he's on there. But I thought people would be like,
124
00:08:01.879 --> 00:08:05.759
are you crazy? But I really
do appreciate the delivery drivers. Yeah,
125
00:08:05.879 --> 00:08:09.360
they work really hard, and I
really do appreciate. I appreciate everyone.
126
00:08:09.879 --> 00:08:13.160
Well, we're in eight minutes,
so we better get into your case.
127
00:08:13.199 --> 00:08:15.399
Sorry about that. Well you can
just when you add it, you
128
00:08:15.439 --> 00:08:18.959
can just speed us up. Sure
you can make it like two minutes.
129
00:08:18.800 --> 00:08:24.279
So today I have a recent newscase
for you, the story of Caitlin Armstrong,
130
00:08:24.879 --> 00:08:31.560
Colin Strickland, and Anna Mariah Wilson. Okay you ready, I'm ready.
131
00:08:31.200 --> 00:08:35.919
Anna Mariah Moe Wilson was shot multiple
times and died in Austin, Texas
132
00:08:35.960 --> 00:08:39.639
on May eleventh, twenty twenty two, just a week before her twenty sixth
133
00:08:39.679 --> 00:08:45.480
birthday, while staying at her friend
Caitlin Cash's apartment. Mo Is, she
134
00:08:45.600 --> 00:08:48.639
liked to be called, was a
professional cyclist who competed in a Newish sport
135
00:08:48.759 --> 00:08:52.279
called gravel racing. Have you heard
of gravel racing before? I haven't,
136
00:08:52.279 --> 00:08:56.720
but it sounds kind of dangerous.
She came to Austin for the May fourteenth
137
00:08:56.919 --> 00:09:01.799
Gravel Locos Bike Race, a one
hundred and fifties seven mile race across Texas
138
00:09:01.840 --> 00:09:05.320
called the super Bowl of Gravel.
She was strongly favored to win. Her
139
00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:11.440
star was rapidly rising. Caitlyn returned
home just before ten pm to find Moe
140
00:09:11.519 --> 00:09:15.639
lying unconscious in her small bathroom.
It took her a moment to get her
141
00:09:15.639 --> 00:09:20.000
bearings. Her first thought was that
Moe had fallen asleep or was stretching,
142
00:09:20.080 --> 00:09:24.080
but then she realized her friend was
covered in blood. Caitlyn ran to get
143
00:09:24.080 --> 00:09:28.200
her phone and called nine one one
at nine fifty six pm. She frantically
144
00:09:28.279 --> 00:09:33.440
performed CPR on mo while she waited
for help. EMTs arrived moments later,
145
00:09:33.480 --> 00:09:35.720
but they weren't able to save her. She'd likely been dead for as long
146
00:09:35.720 --> 00:09:39.919
as an hour. Moe Wilson,
full of promise and untapped dreams, was
147
00:09:39.960 --> 00:09:46.600
pronounced dead at ten ten pm after
resuscitation efforts failed. Responding officers instantly knew
148
00:09:46.759 --> 00:09:52.320
Moe's death was not a random act
and quickly ruled it a homicide. Within
149
00:09:52.399 --> 00:09:56.159
hours, they had a person of
interest in their sights. I should mention
150
00:09:56.200 --> 00:10:01.480
there's two Caitlins in this story.
Caitlyn with the Sea Caitlyn cash is Moe's
151
00:10:01.519 --> 00:10:05.720
good friend who is she's staying And
Caitlyn with a Ka Caitlyn Armstrong, who
152
00:10:05.759 --> 00:10:11.639
we will be introduced to shortly.
Anna Mariah Wilson was born on May eighteenth,
153
00:10:11.759 --> 00:10:16.200
nineteen ninety six, and Lyttleton,
New Hampshire, to Eric and Karen
154
00:10:16.240 --> 00:10:20.879
Wilson. Both of Moe's parents had
been members of the US national ski team.
155
00:10:20.320 --> 00:10:24.279
Moe's aunt, Laura Wilson, competed
in two Olympic Games in nineteen ninety
156
00:10:24.279 --> 00:10:28.960
four and nineteen ninety eight in cross
country skiing. Moe grew up in rural
157
00:10:30.120 --> 00:10:33.519
Vermont. She loved spending time outdoors
on all seasons in any weather. When
158
00:10:33.559 --> 00:10:37.960
she wasn't skiing in the snow,
she would bike the Kingdom Trails near her
159
00:10:37.960 --> 00:10:41.559
home to say Moe was the athletic
would be a vast understatement. From a
160
00:10:41.559 --> 00:10:46.120
young age, she was a passionate
and accomplished alpine skier, earning a national
161
00:10:46.240 --> 00:10:50.879
ranking as a junior skier. She
plays third in the twenty thirteen US Junior
162
00:10:50.960 --> 00:10:58.559
National Championship downhill event and impressive.
She's an amazing young woman. Moe attended
163
00:10:58.600 --> 00:11:01.080
high school at Burke Mountain, Aca, Me where she earned four varsity letters
164
00:11:01.080 --> 00:11:05.240
for alpine skiing. Her father was
the ski coach, two in cycling and
165
00:11:05.320 --> 00:11:11.840
three in soccer, and she was
also the soccer team captain. Mo attended
166
00:11:11.919 --> 00:11:15.679
Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and received a Bachelor of Arts and
167
00:11:15.759 --> 00:11:20.480
Engineering in twenty nineteen. While attending
Dartmouth, Moe was on the soccer team
168
00:11:20.600 --> 00:11:24.720
and the alpine ski team, fulfilling
her childhood dream. After graduating college,
169
00:11:24.879 --> 00:11:31.279
Mo moved to San Francisco and worked
as a demand planner for California based bicycle
170
00:11:31.320 --> 00:11:35.519
manufacturer Specialized. She decided to put
her skis down and began to focus on
171
00:11:37.039 --> 00:11:41.360
a career as an elite bike racer, racing both gravel and mountain bikes.
172
00:11:41.919 --> 00:11:45.759
She quickly rose to the top of
the rankings and both disciplines of the sport.
173
00:11:46.399 --> 00:11:48.720
Weeks before her death, she left
her job to focus on her cycling
174
00:11:48.759 --> 00:11:54.480
career full time. Here's an excerpt
for Moe's obituary. Mo loved cooking,
175
00:11:54.519 --> 00:12:00.120
writing, and traveling. She loved
Italy Taco Tuesdays, maple creams, and
176
00:12:00.159 --> 00:12:05.519
playing Settlers of Katan with her friends. Most importantly, Mariah's recent dream was
177
00:12:05.559 --> 00:12:09.360
to channel her success and ways to
give back and inspire others around the world.
178
00:12:09.200 --> 00:12:13.480
Moe recently chose to call Vermont her
home again, with a vision to
179
00:12:13.559 --> 00:12:18.679
create a local community space in Eastburg, Vermont, where writers could gather throughout
180
00:12:18.720 --> 00:12:22.320
the day, feel welcome, share
a good cup of coffee, and a
181
00:12:22.360 --> 00:12:26.519
bite of locally sourced food. After
her death, Moe's family issued the following
182
00:12:26.519 --> 00:12:31.279
statement. We thank everyone for their
expression of love and support for us in
183
00:12:31.320 --> 00:12:37.200
this difficult time. While the tragic
loss of Mariah is unfathomable, at the
184
00:12:37.240 --> 00:12:41.519
same time, we own everyone to
join us in celebrating her life accomplishment and
185
00:12:41.600 --> 00:12:46.440
love for others. Always pushing tirelessly
to reach her goals. We knew she
186
00:12:46.519 --> 00:12:50.679
was pursuing that which she loved.
We will miss her terribly and know that
187
00:12:50.759 --> 00:12:54.519
all mourn her with us. We
know that Mariah would want the event to
188
00:12:54.559 --> 00:12:58.759
carry on. I think they meant
like an upcoming by Grace for compatriots to
189
00:12:58.799 --> 00:13:03.080
test their limits. She would have
been alongside her friends on the race course.
190
00:13:03.320 --> 00:13:07.080
We hope everyone feels her passion and
supports they chase their own dreams.
191
00:13:07.480 --> 00:13:11.200
Her spirit will be there with you
while training and on every race day.
192
00:13:11.639 --> 00:13:15.279
Please do not reach out for interviews
or comments for the rest of May.
193
00:13:15.600 --> 00:13:18.679
We are planning a celebration of life
in June and will be forthcoming with details
194
00:13:18.679 --> 00:13:22.919
soon. It's like a great person. And you said she was only twenty
195
00:13:22.960 --> 00:13:26.960
six, right, She was twenty
five for birthday. She died exactly a
196
00:13:26.960 --> 00:13:31.120
week before her birthday. Here's a
clip of Moe talking about her childhood.
197
00:13:31.840 --> 00:13:37.120
Well, I grew up in Vermont. A big part of my upbringing was
198
00:13:37.200 --> 00:13:41.639
just like I was on sea before
I could basically walk. And then when
199
00:13:41.639 --> 00:13:46.000
I was like seven or something,
I think my dad asked me and my
200
00:13:46.039 --> 00:13:48.480
brother if we wanted to race,
and we were like, yeah, of
201
00:13:48.519 --> 00:13:52.240
course, Like we love skiing,
like it just seems so natural. So
202
00:13:52.679 --> 00:14:00.879
we started racing. When I graduated
from college in twenty nineteen, I bought
203
00:14:00.879 --> 00:14:05.120
a gravel bike that summer move to
San Francisco, and just like immediately started
204
00:14:05.159 --> 00:14:11.600
to fall in love with racing.
The transition from skiing to racing bikes just
205
00:14:11.600 --> 00:14:16.879
felt really natural. I've known for
my whole life I am an endurance athlete.
206
00:14:16.279 --> 00:14:20.480
Growing up. I all I wanted
to do was be like a professional
207
00:14:20.720 --> 00:14:22.360
gear but on a deeper level,
I didn't even have to be skiing.
208
00:14:22.360 --> 00:14:26.399
I just want to be like a
professional athletes. Feel like I'm being really
209
00:14:26.600 --> 00:14:31.039
true to myself and this little girl
inside of me that just that's all that
210
00:14:31.039 --> 00:14:37.919
she dreamed about. She sounds pretty
great, she really does. Yeah,
211
00:14:39.000 --> 00:14:43.440
it's funny because I've known my whole
life that I am not an endurance athlete.
212
00:14:43.000 --> 00:14:46.960
I have had a passion for not
being an elite after life, I
213
00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:50.159
know to give it, a passion
for it, but I mean, I
214
00:14:50.200 --> 00:14:54.080
have so much respect for people who
can get up every morning at four thirty
215
00:14:54.159 --> 00:14:58.360
and in the dark and do theirs, you know, training, and it's
216
00:14:58.440 --> 00:15:01.200
yeah, it's amazing. It's very
impressive. She was kind of born into
217
00:15:01.200 --> 00:15:05.879
the family too that was sort of
had that level of athleticism as well.
218
00:15:05.960 --> 00:15:11.120
Right, Definitely, it sounds like
a lovely family. According to Bellownews,
219
00:15:11.200 --> 00:15:16.600
a website for all things cycling,
Moe was quote the winningness woman in the
220
00:15:16.679 --> 00:15:22.080
American off road scene. She won
ten races in twenty twenty two, and
221
00:15:22.120 --> 00:15:24.720
remember she died on May eleventh,
so the year was less than half over,
222
00:15:26.399 --> 00:15:31.320
including the Shasta Gravel Hugger and the
Rock Cobbler in California. Moe's last
223
00:15:31.480 --> 00:15:35.600
race, the one hundred and thirty
seven Belgian Waffle Ride, was held in
224
00:15:35.639 --> 00:15:39.039
San Diego a week before her death. Mo not only finished first, but
225
00:15:39.159 --> 00:15:46.960
she decimated her nearest competition by twenty
five minutes. Holy moly, waiting at
226
00:15:46.960 --> 00:15:52.120
the finish line twenty five that's amazing. That is amazing. I'm more curious
227
00:15:52.200 --> 00:15:54.480
though about the Belgian Waffle part of
the ride, though, is that like,
228
00:15:54.519 --> 00:15:58.679
do you stop along the way and
grabby? I think they just I
229
00:15:58.679 --> 00:16:00.679
think these gravel racers, I'm going
to read you a little bit about the
230
00:16:00.679 --> 00:16:03.120
gravel racing in a little bit,
but I think they just it's kind of
231
00:16:03.159 --> 00:16:07.440
tongue in cheek. I think they
liked the silly names and it sounds like
232
00:16:07.440 --> 00:16:12.159
a pretty fun sport. Moe was
a well respected and beloved member of the
233
00:16:12.200 --> 00:16:17.279
close nt racing community. Her loss
was deeply felt and sent chock waves through
234
00:16:17.320 --> 00:16:21.600
their community. The Mariah Wilson Foundation
was formed in her honor by her family
235
00:16:21.639 --> 00:16:26.159
and friends and has raised over one
hundred and forty thousand dollars. The foundation
236
00:16:26.279 --> 00:16:30.159
hopes to continue most legacy by helping
youth find self confidence, strength and joy
237
00:16:30.360 --> 00:16:36.799
through biking, skiing, and other
sports. Gravel bike racing is the newest
238
00:16:36.840 --> 00:16:40.639
discipline in the cycling world. As
the name suggests, it's done mostly on
239
00:16:40.679 --> 00:16:45.320
gravel roads. An article in The
New Yorker called gravel racing both a solo
240
00:16:45.440 --> 00:16:48.679
endurance sport and a party in the
mud. The same article compared the sport
241
00:16:48.720 --> 00:16:55.279
to a mullet business and the front
party in the back. Most races are
242
00:16:55.279 --> 00:16:57.840
between one hundred and fifty and two
hundred miles and take all day to complete.
243
00:16:59.399 --> 00:17:03.399
The bikes have chunky tires and bike
frames that are a little heftier than
244
00:17:03.480 --> 00:17:07.119
a lot of the streamlined bikes that
have been on the market. Gravel biking
245
00:17:07.119 --> 00:17:11.880
has gained popularity around the world.
There are single and multi day races.
246
00:17:11.079 --> 00:17:15.440
Gravel racing is a combination of road, cyclo cross and mountain bike racing.
247
00:17:15.799 --> 00:17:21.480
Usually on open gravel roads, double
dirt double tracks, and sneaking single track,
248
00:17:22.039 --> 00:17:26.960
often with some stretches of paved road
to link off road segments. I'm
249
00:17:26.000 --> 00:17:29.960
just laughing because some of these words, I'm I really don't know what they
250
00:17:30.000 --> 00:17:33.960
mean. Some courses are smooth,
while others are hilly, rough and muddy.
251
00:17:33.319 --> 00:17:36.759
They're very muddy. A lot of
times you'll see, like there's a
252
00:17:36.799 --> 00:17:40.559
lot of pictures of mo and other
racers that when they finish, their faces
253
00:17:40.559 --> 00:17:44.599
are just muddy, and I think
that's just a badge of honor. Yeah,
254
00:17:44.640 --> 00:17:48.720
gravel racing is known to be casual, fun and friendly. Gravel racing
255
00:17:48.759 --> 00:17:52.000
is not an Olympic sport. There
are five cycling sports currently in the Olympics
256
00:17:52.359 --> 00:17:57.160
BMX Freestyle, BMX racing, mountain
bike, road cycling, and track cycling.
257
00:17:59.000 --> 00:18:02.720
In North America, where some of
the fastest races are held, the
258
00:18:02.759 --> 00:18:07.440
average speed can reach twenty miles per
hour sustained for ten hours. So that
259
00:18:07.519 --> 00:18:11.440
takes a lot of endurance, yeah, and a lot of month muscle strength,
260
00:18:11.480 --> 00:18:14.880
and yeah, it's crazy. One
great thing about gravel racing is that
261
00:18:14.920 --> 00:18:18.640
it's very welcoming and you don't have
to be a professional athlete. To compete.
262
00:18:18.720 --> 00:18:21.519
All levels are welcome at most races. Cool, you're going to take
263
00:18:21.559 --> 00:18:22.480
it up? Now? Did I
talk you into it? Probably not?
264
00:18:23.240 --> 00:18:26.960
Generally, the cycler's ride on quiet, remote roads among nature. Most gravel
265
00:18:27.000 --> 00:18:32.119
races are longer than mountain bike races. There are specialized gravel bikes, but
266
00:18:32.319 --> 00:18:36.640
a mountain bike or whatever bike you
feel most comfortable riding is acceptable. Cool.
267
00:18:36.680 --> 00:18:38.759
We do have a lot of gravel
roads around here. Maybe I would
268
00:18:38.799 --> 00:18:42.519
feel safer. I like riding a
bike, but I hate riding on the
269
00:18:42.559 --> 00:18:47.200
road. It really terrifies me.
And I've known so many people that have
270
00:18:47.200 --> 00:18:49.039
gotten hit by cars and stuff.
Yeah, so I really won't ride on
271
00:18:49.039 --> 00:18:52.200
the road, but maybe a gravel
road I would be more comfortable. I
272
00:18:52.200 --> 00:18:55.799
don't know that. We used to
live on a gravel road and it is
273
00:18:55.880 --> 00:18:59.480
kind of drive pretty fast down there. Yeah, okay. So Mo flew
274
00:18:59.519 --> 00:19:03.200
into Austin in Texas on May tenth
to train and ACCLI May before the big
275
00:19:03.279 --> 00:19:06.799
race. On May fourteenth, Caitlyn
picked her up from the airport Caitlin with
276
00:19:06.839 --> 00:19:10.440
the sea and drove them back to
her small apartment. Mos stayed with her
277
00:19:10.440 --> 00:19:12.960
friend to save a little money.
She awoke on May eleventh, with sore,
278
00:19:14.079 --> 00:19:17.319
tired muscles. As usual, she
stretched on yon before changing into her
279
00:19:17.359 --> 00:19:21.039
training gear. She had been training
nod stop since quitting her job to focus
280
00:19:21.039 --> 00:19:25.200
full time on her cycling career.
She had made great strides in recent months,
281
00:19:25.319 --> 00:19:27.559
skyrocketing to the top of the field. I didn't say this earlier,
282
00:19:27.599 --> 00:19:33.559
but she was so good, like
for you know, being pretty young,
283
00:19:33.920 --> 00:19:36.680
and you know, she hadn't been
training her whole life like some people.
284
00:19:37.599 --> 00:19:41.119
She was able to beat a lot
of the men in the field. She
285
00:19:41.240 --> 00:19:45.039
was just it would just have been
amazing to see what she could have could
286
00:19:45.119 --> 00:19:48.640
be doing. Mo had made plans
to go swimming with her friend Colin Strickland,
287
00:19:48.720 --> 00:19:52.720
a fellow gravel rider, that afternoon. Kitln knew Colin and Mo had
288
00:19:52.799 --> 00:19:56.960
dated briefly. She wasn't a fan
of his. She tried to talk Mo
289
00:19:57.079 --> 00:20:00.200
out of seeing Colin, but Mo
assured her that she had everything out of
290
00:20:00.279 --> 00:20:06.279
control. Caitlyn left the apartment before
Colin arrived. When she returned home later
291
00:20:06.359 --> 00:20:10.359
that night, just before ten pm, she noted with mild irritation that Moe's
292
00:20:10.400 --> 00:20:14.119
large bike bag was in her car
port, blocking her spot. She'd asked
293
00:20:14.160 --> 00:20:17.880
her to move it earlier, but
strangely, Moe's racing bike was missing,
294
00:20:18.480 --> 00:20:22.480
just the bag remained. Caitlyn walked
up the wooden stairs to her small apartment
295
00:20:22.519 --> 00:20:26.960
above her landlord's garage. She stripped
herself of her cell phone, restaurant leftovers,
296
00:20:26.960 --> 00:20:30.680
and other belongings before she walked to
the bathroom. She stopped abruptly.
297
00:20:30.839 --> 00:20:33.480
A scream rose in her throat when
she saw her front so full of life
298
00:20:33.480 --> 00:20:37.960
and promise just an hour before lying
in a pole of her blood. Caitlyn
299
00:20:38.000 --> 00:20:41.240
dropped to her knees and searched for
Moe's pulse. Not finding one, she
300
00:20:41.359 --> 00:20:45.640
ran to grab her phone and dialed
nine one one, then began chest compressions.
301
00:20:47.079 --> 00:20:51.200
So police arrived at Caitlyn's apartment after
the AMT's. While the amts were
302
00:20:51.200 --> 00:20:56.559
still attempting to revive mo they began
their investigation. They found several bullet casing
303
00:20:56.720 --> 00:21:00.519
surrounding her body, but no gun. Moe's expense of customized racing bike was
304
00:21:00.559 --> 00:21:06.400
found hidden in some bushes about seventy
feet from the garage where she had stored
305
00:21:06.400 --> 00:21:10.480
it earlier. Could Moe's killer have
been a rival who was jealous of her
306
00:21:10.519 --> 00:21:15.480
success and rocketing fame. A Tanya
Harding type incident. What do you think?
307
00:21:15.839 --> 00:21:18.039
I mean, it doesn't seem likely
with the sport as you described it
308
00:21:18.039 --> 00:21:23.079
as people that are very uh,
you know, friendly and camaraderie. I
309
00:21:23.119 --> 00:21:26.440
guess there's a lot of camaraderie,
but I think the top racers like,
310
00:21:26.559 --> 00:21:30.759
you know, yeah, business in
the front, party in the back.
311
00:21:30.960 --> 00:21:36.599
So the main competitors I think were
pretty you know, more aggressive. I
312
00:21:36.640 --> 00:21:40.720
think everyone was friendly, but everyone's
people want to win. Yeah. Yeah,
313
00:21:41.119 --> 00:21:45.400
Caitlin, we're still talking about.
Caitlin with the Sea told investigators that
314
00:21:45.559 --> 00:21:48.640
she used an electronic lock on her
door and she'd given a unique code to
315
00:21:48.759 --> 00:21:55.240
Moe to use during her stay.
She was able to pinpoint for investigators exactly
316
00:21:55.279 --> 00:21:59.640
when Moe came and went. Mo
had left Caitlyn's apartment at five fifty five
317
00:21:59.680 --> 00:22:03.039
pm when Colin picked her up on
his BMW motorcycle. They went to the
318
00:22:03.079 --> 00:22:07.599
deep Eddy Pool in Austin and then
to Pull Burger for dinner and a couple
319
00:22:07.599 --> 00:22:11.440
of drinks. Despite Mo telling Caitlin
they robbed the others at the dinner and
320
00:22:11.559 --> 00:22:15.240
was just her and Colin. There
was video of them leaving the restaurant at
321
00:22:15.279 --> 00:22:18.960
eight sixteen pm. Moe returned to
the apartment at eight thirty six pm after
322
00:22:19.000 --> 00:22:22.279
Colin dropped her off. He did
not walk her to the door or go
323
00:22:22.319 --> 00:22:27.119
inside because Colin was not a gentleman. I'm not a fan of Collins.
324
00:22:29.160 --> 00:22:33.599
Mo did not lock the door after
returning to the apartment. Caitlyn didn't have
325
00:22:33.640 --> 00:22:37.519
a surveillance cameras, but her neighbors
did, and the camera footage confirmed Moe's
326
00:22:37.519 --> 00:22:42.000
eight thirty six arrival. But at
eight thirty seven PM, a dark suv
327
00:22:42.240 --> 00:22:47.920
was seen pulling up to the residence. There was a bike rack mounted onto
328
00:22:47.960 --> 00:22:51.720
a trailer hitch on the rear of
the suv and a luggage rack on the
329
00:22:51.759 --> 00:22:56.559
top. The vehicle also had distinctive
chrome details. David Harris, the owner
330
00:22:56.559 --> 00:23:02.079
of the apartment Kaitlyn rented, told
he was in his garage and heard someone
331
00:23:02.160 --> 00:23:06.400
running down the apartment stairs between eight
thirty and nine thirty on May eleventh.
332
00:23:07.160 --> 00:23:11.680
That's quite a span of time,
but he didn't report hearing gunshots. He
333
00:23:11.720 --> 00:23:15.079
thought he saw someone leave the scene
on a bike quickly through the alleyway.
334
00:23:15.960 --> 00:23:21.640
And remember, Moe's bike was found
in some nearby bushes. I wonder if
335
00:23:21.680 --> 00:23:25.720
someone could have just you know how
far away where the bushes is seventy feet
336
00:23:26.519 --> 00:23:30.599
But he said he thought he thought
he saw someone on a bike. So
337
00:23:30.759 --> 00:23:33.839
we know that Moe was killed somewhere
between eight thirty six and about nine p
338
00:23:33.960 --> 00:23:37.880
fifty when Caitlin returned. Okay,
it's weird that he didn't hear any gunshots.
339
00:23:38.200 --> 00:23:42.000
It is weird. The next day, May twelfth, twenty twenty two,
340
00:23:42.200 --> 00:23:47.119
investigators paid a visit to Colin Strickland, who was the last person to
341
00:23:47.119 --> 00:23:49.960
see Moo alive. He also lived
in Austin, Texas. There were three
342
00:23:51.039 --> 00:23:55.599
vehicles in his driveway, a two
thousand and two BMW motorcycle, a nineteen
343
00:23:55.680 --> 00:24:00.839
ninety eight Mercedes, and a twenty
twelve Jeep Grand Cherokee. Jeep was black
344
00:24:00.160 --> 00:24:08.319
and had a bike rack luggadrack chrome
jinctive chrome trim. Colin Strickland was born
345
00:24:08.359 --> 00:24:12.359
on November seventeenth, nineteen eighty six, in Johnson City, Texas, about
346
00:24:12.400 --> 00:24:17.960
fifty miles from Austin. He grew
up on his family's organic farm. He
347
00:24:18.000 --> 00:24:22.160
was a talented runner in high school. He attended the University of Texas and
348
00:24:22.200 --> 00:24:26.559
earned a degree in environmental science.
He worked for a local environmental consultant until
349
00:24:26.559 --> 00:24:32.119
he began cycling professionally in his late
twenties. His first big win was at
350
00:24:32.119 --> 00:24:37.039
the AlleyCat Race at the twenty ten
North American Handmade Bike Show. According to
351
00:24:37.039 --> 00:24:41.279
heavy dot com. In twenty fourteen, Colin won the Texas Cup, Overall
352
00:24:41.400 --> 00:24:47.920
Road Criteria Championship and the season finale
of the Red Hook Criteria in Milan,
353
00:24:48.000 --> 00:24:52.960
Italy. In twenty sixteen, he
made the Red Hook Series his focus and
354
00:24:52.039 --> 00:24:59.039
completed an unprecedented four race winning streak
with victories at Brooklyn, London and Barcelona.
355
00:25:00.279 --> 00:25:03.240
Gained several sponsors, among them Bred
Bull. To be sponsored by Red
356
00:25:03.240 --> 00:25:08.200
Bull as a big deal as they
only sponsor elite athletes like Moe. Colin
357
00:25:08.240 --> 00:25:14.279
switched to gravel racing and won the
Unbound Gravel Race in twenty nineteen and was
358
00:25:14.319 --> 00:25:18.359
the second place finisher at Gravel Worlds
last year. He was one of the
359
00:25:18.359 --> 00:25:22.759
biggest stars of the gravel racing world. He once estimate that he wrote how
360
00:25:22.799 --> 00:25:25.759
many miles a year? Do you
think? He wrote on his bike?
361
00:25:25.839 --> 00:25:29.480
Oh gosh, that means give me
a stab in the thirty six thousand.
362
00:25:29.839 --> 00:25:34.680
Okay, well no, I'm sure
you would write them eleven thousand miles a
363
00:25:34.720 --> 00:25:37.519
year, which was a lot of
miles. Yees, probably more miles than
364
00:25:37.559 --> 00:25:42.680
I'd drive my car honestly. Yeah. After the letdown of Lance Armstrong's doping
365
00:25:42.720 --> 00:25:48.960
scandal a decade earlier, Colin Strickland
became a local celebrity in Austin. At
366
00:25:48.000 --> 00:25:52.279
six feet two inches tall and one
hundred and sixty five pounds, Colin is
367
00:25:52.359 --> 00:25:56.880
lean but muscular, confident and friendly
with a swagger to him. Despite being
368
00:25:56.920 --> 00:26:02.519
in a committed relationship, he'd loved
to talk conflirt with other women in person
369
00:26:03.119 --> 00:26:07.039
and online. Sometimes those dms can
be hard to resist. What did you
370
00:26:07.039 --> 00:26:11.920
say him form? Because it doesn't
sound good. It sounds like something in
371
00:26:11.960 --> 00:26:17.599
a committed relationship shouldn't be doing.
He wasn't known for his honesty or monogamy.
372
00:26:17.839 --> 00:26:21.480
To put it bluntly, he'd made
some enemies along the way. When
373
00:26:21.480 --> 00:26:25.839
people asked him about his relationship with
his girlfriend Caitlin, he'd downplay it and
374
00:26:25.960 --> 00:26:30.319
make it sound like a business relationship. The romans had fizzled out. Like
375
00:26:30.359 --> 00:26:33.640
a lot of athletes, his ego
might have been bigger than his talent,
376
00:26:33.920 --> 00:26:37.000
but being a sports star is about
marketing yourself, and Colin was pretty good
377
00:26:37.000 --> 00:26:42.000
at that. Here's a clip of
Colin talking about his favorite thing himself.
378
00:26:42.839 --> 00:26:48.119
My ideal scenario would always be to
get myself into a move that has the
379
00:26:48.160 --> 00:26:52.599
potential to make it to the line
with a fewer selection of writers. I'm
380
00:26:52.640 --> 00:26:57.400
not a post to sprinting, but
it's not my specialty. My name's Colin
381
00:26:57.440 --> 00:27:03.519
Stripling. I'm racing for a LLA
specialized for the Red Hook KRIT Series in
382
00:27:03.519 --> 00:27:07.559
twenty sixteen. I'm from Austin,
Texas. I've been racing the Red Hook
383
00:27:07.720 --> 00:27:14.759
crit Series on and off for approximately
five years. We had to be very
384
00:27:14.799 --> 00:27:18.680
conservative going into race. People would
be watching us, they would be waiting
385
00:27:18.720 --> 00:27:22.960
for the moment, so we had
to take advantage of the efforts other riders
386
00:27:22.000 --> 00:27:26.880
were putting in to soften the field
or string out the field catch some riders
387
00:27:26.880 --> 00:27:30.279
out of position. Okay, that
clip went on for a while, but
388
00:27:32.039 --> 00:27:34.839
I didn't really know what he was
talking about. On May twelve, twenty
389
00:27:34.880 --> 00:27:38.480
twenty two, police asked Colin about
the jeep in his driveway. He told
390
00:27:38.519 --> 00:27:42.720
them it belonged to his living girlfriend
of three years, Caitlin with a k
391
00:27:44.279 --> 00:27:48.599
Armstrong thirty four, no relation to
Lance. It was hers. He never
392
00:27:48.759 --> 00:27:52.839
drove it, He said. They
requested that he go to the police station
393
00:27:52.960 --> 00:27:56.960
for a formal interview. He complied
and was told he was free to leave
394
00:27:56.039 --> 00:28:00.680
as he chose any time. Colin
described Caitlin with a K as sweet and
395
00:28:00.759 --> 00:28:04.279
caring and not capable of murder.
She wasn't the jealous type, he said.
396
00:28:04.799 --> 00:28:08.720
He told police that he and Caitlyn
had briefly broken up the previous October
397
00:28:08.759 --> 00:28:12.720
for a few weeks, but they
had fully reconciled. During the time they
398
00:28:12.759 --> 00:28:18.599
were broken up, Colin met and
briefly dated Moe Wilson. He assured police
399
00:28:18.640 --> 00:28:22.480
that they had parted ways amicably and
remained good friends. He called Moe the
400
00:28:22.519 --> 00:28:26.599
best female cyclist in the US and
possibly the world. During his interview,
401
00:28:27.119 --> 00:28:30.599
it was obvious he respected her by
the way he talked about her. Colin
402
00:28:30.680 --> 00:28:37.519
claimed he was helping Moe gain new
sponsors. He described Caitlin unless glowing terms
403
00:28:37.599 --> 00:28:41.799
when he talked about her cycling career. He referred to her as a participant
404
00:28:41.000 --> 00:28:45.920
and not a competitor at races,
and said she held him back during training,
405
00:28:45.000 --> 00:28:49.519
so they trained separately. So Caitlin
with a K was also a cyclist,
406
00:28:49.519 --> 00:28:53.720
but not at the same elite level
that Colin and Mo were at.
407
00:28:53.960 --> 00:28:56.480
Correct, she was just an amateur, okay. And one other quick question
408
00:28:56.599 --> 00:29:00.400
for you too that I was thinking
about is when you said that Colin and
409
00:29:00.519 --> 00:29:03.839
Mo dated briefly, Like was it
like a week two weeks? Or like
410
00:29:03.880 --> 00:29:07.920
how you literally said I was a
week A week to two week, one
411
00:29:07.960 --> 00:29:11.680
to two weeks. Colin told police
he had purchased two guns in December twenty
412
00:29:11.720 --> 00:29:17.279
twenty one, a Springfield Arms nine
millimeter pistol for himself and a sig Sour
413
00:29:17.759 --> 00:29:22.640
nine millimeter pistol for Caitlin after she'd
been shaken up after a road rage incident.
414
00:29:22.680 --> 00:29:26.960
Colin admitted to police that he hadn't
told Caitlin he was seeing Mo.
415
00:29:26.200 --> 00:29:30.279
On the evening of May eleventh,
after he dropped Mo off, Colin parked
416
00:29:30.279 --> 00:29:36.319
in a nearby alleyway and texted Caitlin
Armstrong the following Hey are you out?
417
00:29:36.960 --> 00:29:40.519
I went to drop some flowers off
for Allison at her son's house up north
418
00:29:40.680 --> 00:29:45.119
and my phone died heading home Unless
you have any other food suggestion? Okay,
419
00:29:45.160 --> 00:29:51.480
so he meant pot. I think
he sent this like right after he
420
00:29:51.559 --> 00:29:55.799
dropped Mo off, Okay, and
the phone died. Excuse come on,
421
00:29:56.000 --> 00:29:59.160
I know so, I mean,
obviously he was lying for why do you
422
00:29:59.200 --> 00:30:03.160
think he was lying to He because
he's kind of a dog and he was
423
00:30:03.200 --> 00:30:04.920
seeing in another woman. He didn't
want her to know about it, even
424
00:30:04.920 --> 00:30:07.640
though even if it was completely innocent, he didn't want her to know.
425
00:30:07.759 --> 00:30:11.279
Correct. He returned home to the
house he shared with Caitlin at eight forty
426
00:30:11.279 --> 00:30:15.920
three pm. He went to his
garage and worked on his racing bikes until
427
00:30:15.960 --> 00:30:19.200
nine twenty one, when he texted
Caitlyn again. She returned home around nine
428
00:30:19.200 --> 00:30:23.920
point thirty. During Colin's interview at
the station, police carried out a search
429
00:30:23.960 --> 00:30:27.920
warrant on his house and seized the
two pistols, along with three phones,
430
00:30:29.000 --> 00:30:32.799
one belonging to Colin and two to
Kaitlin, as well as her MacBook pro.
431
00:30:33.559 --> 00:30:37.839
Colin willingly submitted to a DNA sample. He left the police station after
432
00:30:37.880 --> 00:30:41.839
his whereabouts were confirmed by a traffic
camera during the time of Moe's murder.
433
00:30:42.359 --> 00:30:48.240
He was not a serious suspect.
Colin Strickland's attorney released the following statement in
434
00:30:48.319 --> 00:30:53.119
his behalf to reporter Tony Pluwetski of
Austin American Statesman on May twentieth, twenty
435
00:30:53.160 --> 00:30:57.960
twenty two. I am reeling from
grieving Moe Wilson's death and from facts that
436
00:30:57.960 --> 00:31:03.640
have emerged during the investigation. I
cannot begin to imagine the pain felt by
437
00:31:03.680 --> 00:31:07.160
Moe's family and her close friends.
There is no way to adequately express the
438
00:31:07.200 --> 00:31:11.759
regret and torture I feel about my
proximity to this horrible crime. I am
439
00:31:11.799 --> 00:31:17.160
sorry, and I simply can't make
sense of this unfathomable tragedy. Although it
440
00:31:17.200 --> 00:31:19.599
will be a matter of small consolation
to anyone that cared for Mo, I
441
00:31:19.680 --> 00:31:23.640
want you to know that I have
cooperated fully with the investigators ever since I
442
00:31:23.720 --> 00:31:27.240
learned the terrible news, and I
will continue to do so until some form
443
00:31:27.279 --> 00:31:32.920
of justice is served. As a
point of clarification to points previously reported,
444
00:31:33.240 --> 00:31:37.200
Mariah Wilson and I had a brief
romantic relationship from late October to early November
445
00:31:37.200 --> 00:31:42.119
twenty twenty twenty one that spanned a
week or so while Wilson was visiting Austin,
446
00:31:42.359 --> 00:31:45.799
which I think is so weird that
he referred to as Wilson. At
447
00:31:45.799 --> 00:31:49.920
the time, she and I had
both ended relationships. She returned to her
448
00:31:49.920 --> 00:31:55.400
home in California, and about a
month later Caitlin Armstrong and I reconciled and
449
00:31:55.480 --> 00:31:59.680
resumed our relationship. Since then,
I have been seeing Moe at cycling events
450
00:31:59.720 --> 00:32:04.039
and old always in public settings.
We both competed in Bentonville, Arkansas,
451
00:32:04.079 --> 00:32:07.519
Stillwater, and Monterey, California.
We also met for our four hour training
452
00:32:07.599 --> 00:32:14.559
ride in Santa Cruz after the Seattle
Classic in Monterey. After our brief relationship
453
00:32:14.559 --> 00:32:17.240
in October of twenty twenty one,
we were not in a romantic relationship,
454
00:32:17.480 --> 00:32:22.920
only a platonic and professional one.
It was not my intention to pursue along
455
00:32:22.960 --> 00:32:29.039
an auxiliary romantic relationship that would mislead
anyone. Mariah and I were both leaders
456
00:32:29.079 --> 00:32:32.880
in this lonely niche sport of cycling, and I admired her greatly and considered
457
00:32:32.880 --> 00:32:37.880
her a close friend. I am
deeply grieving her loss. Soon after Moe's
458
00:32:37.960 --> 00:32:43.440
death, Colin lost all of his
sponsors, quit his social media accounts,
459
00:32:43.480 --> 00:32:50.240
and withdrew from the racing circuit.
His now private Instagram bioreads former cyclist,
460
00:32:50.480 --> 00:32:55.079
Oh that's surprising. Yeah, I
think it's possible he might get back to
461
00:32:55.160 --> 00:33:00.720
it someday. But even towards the
end of a ripe off Foremo's death,
462
00:33:00.759 --> 00:33:02.680
I think his star had started to
dim a little bit, and he wasn't
463
00:33:02.720 --> 00:33:07.359
training his hard, and I think
he lost a little bit of his zeal
464
00:33:07.440 --> 00:33:17.759
for it. Yeah, let's take
a quick break. Welcome back. Do
465
00:33:17.799 --> 00:33:22.440
you want to tell our listeners what
you just did? No, they're going
466
00:33:22.480 --> 00:33:25.400
to be disappointing you. He gave
me a cookie, I'm going to eat
467
00:33:25.440 --> 00:33:29.759
it. I mean I said there
was one cookie. Oh, and you
468
00:33:29.920 --> 00:33:31.200
ate the whole thing. And that's
a big cookie. And you didn't share
469
00:33:31.240 --> 00:33:35.680
me even one bite. I know
you're trying not to eat sugar, not
470
00:33:35.759 --> 00:33:42.359
trying that hard. Okay, Back
to Caitlin and Colin and Mo. Born
471
00:33:42.400 --> 00:33:45.359
on November twenty first, nineteen eighty
seven. Kaitlin Marie Armstrong grew up in
472
00:33:45.440 --> 00:33:50.599
Lavonia, Michigan. Do you know
where that is? Of course I do,
473
00:33:51.039 --> 00:33:54.480
About twenty miles from Detroit. She
attended Stevenson High School, where she
474
00:33:54.599 --> 00:33:59.960
competed in volleyball, basketball, and
track. She was quiet, but smart,
475
00:34:00.039 --> 00:34:04.319
pretty unpopular. Her red hair,
which she wore curly or sometimes straight,
476
00:34:04.720 --> 00:34:08.079
won her the class award for best
Hair. Mine did not. No.
477
00:34:08.079 --> 00:34:12.800
No, I'm glad that Kaitlyn looks
like she had her hair figured out.
478
00:34:13.400 --> 00:34:19.320
We have like a lot of curly, unruly hair and if I figured
479
00:34:19.320 --> 00:34:22.880
it out like a year ago.
After graduating in two thousand and five,
480
00:34:22.000 --> 00:34:29.119
she attended Schoolcraft Community College and then
Eastern Michigan University, which is right down
481
00:34:29.159 --> 00:34:32.840
the road Eagles. Eastern Michigan and
University of Michigan are very close to each
482
00:34:32.880 --> 00:34:37.159
other. Both of them are fine
schools. After college, Kaitlin traveled the
483
00:34:37.199 --> 00:34:43.079
world to Bali and other exotic locations. Training as a yoga instructor. She
484
00:34:43.199 --> 00:34:47.719
became an adept traveler. She eventually
settled in the Austin, Texas area and
485
00:34:47.800 --> 00:34:52.559
worked as a mortgage broker, a
realtor, and a part time house flipper.
486
00:34:52.239 --> 00:34:55.840
She met Colin and they moved in
together. She was good with finances
487
00:34:55.880 --> 00:35:01.840
and helped him start a business retrofitting
vintage trail pills called Wheelhouse Mobile. John
488
00:35:01.920 --> 00:35:07.000
c Riley bought a renovated nineteen fifty
six Spartan from Colin as his first sale.
489
00:35:07.239 --> 00:35:10.400
I love John c Riley, good
guy. I don't know why you
490
00:35:10.440 --> 00:35:14.880
bought it from Colin. I guess
Colin was pretty good at this. I
491
00:35:14.960 --> 00:35:16.039
wasn't, you know, not a
you know, I'm not a Colin fan,
492
00:35:16.159 --> 00:35:19.880
but he was good at what he
did. He was known as a
493
00:35:19.920 --> 00:35:24.320
tinkerer. Colin had recently given Caitlin
four hundred and fifty thousand dollars to invest
494
00:35:24.320 --> 00:35:29.360
for him. Caitlyn was also a
bike enthusiast, but it was more of
495
00:35:29.400 --> 00:35:32.519
a hobby for her. She tagged
along with Colin to races, and she
496
00:35:32.639 --> 00:35:37.639
competed, but not seriously. She
was more of a party in the back
497
00:35:37.719 --> 00:35:42.840
person okay. During Kaitlyn and Colin's
short breakup in the fall of twenty twenty
498
00:35:42.880 --> 00:35:46.239
one, Colin and Moe began dating. They showed up to a party alongside
499
00:35:46.239 --> 00:35:51.480
their racing friends. Several women at
the party were good friends with Caitlyn and
500
00:35:51.559 --> 00:35:54.719
called her to let her know what
was going on. Caitlyn made an anonymous
501
00:35:54.719 --> 00:36:00.239
call that night to Moe and told
her to stay away from Colin. They
502
00:36:00.280 --> 00:36:04.760
reconciled. Caitlyn was not happy that
Colin and Mo remade friends after their brief
503
00:36:04.760 --> 00:36:08.400
relationship. In fact, she hated
it. She had gone through Colin's phone,
504
00:36:08.639 --> 00:36:14.280
deleted Moe's number, and permanently blocked
it. Colin didn't realize that Mo
505
00:36:14.440 --> 00:36:17.320
would soon be in mortal danger and
simply just kept changing her name and his
506
00:36:17.400 --> 00:36:23.119
phone to a different name and continued
their friendship, frequently deleting their text messages
507
00:36:23.199 --> 00:36:30.400
so Caitlyn wouldn't see them. However, Caitlyn had access to Colin's iCloud account
508
00:36:30.519 --> 00:36:35.599
and was able to see his location
and read his text messages on his iPad
509
00:36:35.800 --> 00:36:40.039
or other devices. Boy, I
know I've said this before, but if
510
00:36:40.079 --> 00:36:45.320
you have to check your partner's messages
and look at his phone, you probably
511
00:36:45.360 --> 00:36:51.800
shouldn't be in that relationship. Yeah, but I'm also old, and you
512
00:36:51.840 --> 00:36:55.199
know I think that's pretty good advice, though, he thinks, so okay.
513
00:36:55.239 --> 00:36:59.960
Yeah. After spotting the black Cheep
on their surveillance footage, then I
514
00:37:00.159 --> 00:37:04.079
of Moe's murder and finding the same
g at Collins House. The next day,
515
00:37:04.599 --> 00:37:08.119
the police department dug up an outstanding
class be arrest a warrant for Caitlin
516
00:37:08.320 --> 00:37:15.639
stemming from an old charge involving an
unpaid botox bill from twenty eighteen. Her
517
00:37:15.679 --> 00:37:19.880
maxed out credit card was declined.
She told the manager, I'll be right
518
00:37:19.920 --> 00:37:22.760
back and I'll just bring you another
card, but she never did. You'd
519
00:37:22.800 --> 00:37:25.119
pay those botox bills? You never
know when it's going to come back to
520
00:37:25.159 --> 00:37:29.719
haunt you, and how much do
you pay for your boatox, I'd better
521
00:37:29.840 --> 00:37:35.679
not say. On May twelfth,
Caitlin was arrested and brought into the homicide
522
00:37:35.760 --> 00:37:38.960
unit for questioning. Once she was
there, police learned that the warrant was
523
00:37:39.000 --> 00:37:43.760
no longer valid because of a mix
up with her birth date, and she
524
00:37:43.880 --> 00:37:46.480
was told she was free to leave
this little technicality. I know, I'll
525
00:37:46.480 --> 00:37:52.039
get you. However, she stayed
and answered questions. Officers noted that she
526
00:37:52.119 --> 00:37:57.199
was oddly still and quiet during the
interview. When shown the video of her
527
00:37:57.280 --> 00:38:00.000
vehicle at the crime scene, she
said she had no idea how it had
528
00:38:00.000 --> 00:38:05.280
gotten there. She denied knowing that
Colin had seen mo. On May eleventh,
529
00:38:06.000 --> 00:38:08.800
after a few moments of uncomfortable silence, Caitlin asked to leave the interview.
530
00:38:09.960 --> 00:38:15.159
A friend of Moe's, who requested
to remain anonymous because she thought she
531
00:38:15.159 --> 00:38:19.039
could be in danger, was interviewed
by police. She is referred to by
532
00:38:19.039 --> 00:38:22.840
the name of Jane Doe in the
indictment. She claimed that Moe and Colin
533
00:38:22.880 --> 00:38:27.199
Strickland had been intertwined off and on
for some time, not just for a
534
00:38:27.239 --> 00:38:30.480
week, as Colin had said.
The relationship began when Moe visited Austin for
535
00:38:30.519 --> 00:38:35.480
the first time. In October twenty
twenty one, Jane Doe said that Caitlin
536
00:38:35.559 --> 00:38:38.719
Armstrong found out about Moa and Colin
talking to each other. She called Moe
537
00:38:38.760 --> 00:38:43.079
and threatened her, telling her to
stay away from Colin, and then she
538
00:38:43.119 --> 00:38:46.599
followed her on Instagram. She called
her several more times until Moe blocked her
539
00:38:46.639 --> 00:38:51.920
number. According to the source,
on May fourteenth, twenty twenty two,
540
00:38:52.119 --> 00:38:55.039
an anonymous friend of Caitlyn's came forward
and told police that she was with her
541
00:38:55.119 --> 00:39:00.159
one night in January of the same
year. She recalled that Caitlin was I
542
00:39:00.280 --> 00:39:04.360
rate and hyper focused on what she
assumed to be the continuing affair between Mo
543
00:39:04.519 --> 00:39:09.079
and Colin. The friend said that
she wanted to kill Mo. The friend
544
00:39:09.119 --> 00:39:15.719
was very worried because Caitlin had recently
acquired the firearm. After seeing Caitlin and
545
00:39:15.760 --> 00:39:19.960
Colin together at a race in January, Moe was confused and sent him the
546
00:39:19.960 --> 00:39:23.599
following text message, Hey, So, I would like to talk to you
547
00:39:23.639 --> 00:39:28.599
at some point. I had originally
texted you on Friday, but it appears
548
00:39:28.639 --> 00:39:31.480
my text aren't going through again.
This weekend was strange for me and I
549
00:39:31.559 --> 00:39:35.760
just want to know what's going on. If you just want to be friends
550
00:39:36.119 --> 00:39:38.199
seems to be the case, then
that's cool. But I'd like to talk
551
00:39:38.239 --> 00:39:43.039
about it because honestly, my mind
has been going in circles and I don't
552
00:39:43.039 --> 00:39:46.079
know what to think. So Mo
thought that she was like in an exclusive
553
00:39:46.119 --> 00:39:52.079
relationship with Colin. I think that
Colin began telling people, Oh, Caitlin
554
00:39:52.159 --> 00:39:57.679
and I aren't really together, we're
more like business partners. So when she
555
00:39:57.800 --> 00:40:00.480
saw them together, she must have
been a little taken of. I don't
556
00:40:00.519 --> 00:40:01.480
know if she thought that. I
don't. I don't think that she thought
557
00:40:01.480 --> 00:40:05.840
they were exclusive, but who knows
what Colin was telling her. That sounds
558
00:40:05.840 --> 00:40:08.159
like he was playing her in some
way. He was absolutely playing her as
559
00:40:08.159 --> 00:40:12.559
far, I believe that he was
playing other people too, not just her.
560
00:40:13.400 --> 00:40:15.679
So Colin replied the next day,
didn't even reply that day. The
561
00:40:15.679 --> 00:40:20.360
next day, Hey, Mo,
I feel very shitty for putting you in
562
00:40:20.400 --> 00:40:23.480
a position where you don't feel comfortable. Caitlyn came along to go to a
563
00:40:23.519 --> 00:40:30.400
meeting about the Sprinter Spartan hotel project. In hindsight, this was not a
564
00:40:30.400 --> 00:40:34.000
good idea. It's a business partner, eh, go in to a meeting.
565
00:40:34.320 --> 00:40:37.920
So I just want to go over
the timeline again, so eight sixteen
566
00:40:37.000 --> 00:40:42.239
on May eleventh, the timeline of
May eleventh. On eight sixteen, Mo
567
00:40:42.440 --> 00:40:46.519
and Colin left the Burger place,
and it is believed that Caitlin was following
568
00:40:46.559 --> 00:40:50.480
them for a certain amount of time. We're not sure how long. But
569
00:40:52.000 --> 00:40:54.880
at eight twenty six the duo up
here on traffic cameras heading back to Caitlyn's
570
00:40:54.880 --> 00:40:59.599
apartment. At eight thirty five,
Colin dropped Mo off at the apartment.
571
00:41:00.280 --> 00:41:05.360
Eight thirty six, Moe enters the
apartment, and eight thirty seven is when
572
00:41:06.360 --> 00:41:09.559
Caitlyn's jeep shows up. But I
don't believe there's any footage of her actually
573
00:41:09.639 --> 00:41:15.000
leaving her vehicles. I'm sure she
did saw the car. Yeah. Eight
574
00:41:15.079 --> 00:41:19.960
forty eight, Colin is spotted again
on traffic camera about eight miles away on
575
00:41:19.960 --> 00:41:24.719
his motorcycle. So he's really just
isn't you know, wasn't right at the
576
00:41:24.800 --> 00:41:29.199
right place, you know, at
the right time to be considered a suspect.
577
00:41:29.400 --> 00:41:32.960
At eight fifty six, Caitlin Caitlin
with the sea called nine one one,
578
00:41:34.119 --> 00:41:37.000
and at ten to ten Mo was
pronounced dead. Okay, So ballistic
579
00:41:37.079 --> 00:41:40.760
tests were run on the SIGs hour
pistol that belonged to Caitlin. It was
580
00:41:40.800 --> 00:41:46.000
determined not one hundred percent, but
it was determined very likely that it was
581
00:41:46.039 --> 00:41:52.119
a match for the bullet casings found
lying next to Moe's body. Investigators learned
582
00:41:52.159 --> 00:41:55.840
that Caitlyn had gone to a shooting
range with her sister and practice shooting the
583
00:41:55.880 --> 00:42:00.039
gun. Moe's cause of death was
the three guns sho wounds, two to
584
00:42:00.079 --> 00:42:04.920
her head and one to her heart. The manner of death was homicide.
585
00:42:05.960 --> 00:42:10.400
Police issued a warrant on May seventeenth
for Kaitlin Armstrong after the ballistics test came
586
00:42:10.440 --> 00:42:15.000
back confirming it was likely her gun
that continued that killed mo. The charge
587
00:42:15.039 --> 00:42:20.199
was first degree felony murder, and
the sentence for that is somewhere between five
588
00:42:20.280 --> 00:42:23.159
and ninety nine years. If the
murder is considered a crime of passion,
589
00:42:23.199 --> 00:42:29.559
the maximum sentence is about twenty years. The affidavit for her arrest points to
590
00:42:29.760 --> 00:42:34.280
video surveillance as evidence that Kaitlyn Armstrong
was present at the crime scene during the
591
00:42:34.320 --> 00:42:38.599
time that Moe was murdered. Caitlyn
had means and a motive. After May
592
00:42:38.599 --> 00:42:44.719
thirteenth, Colin didn't see Caitlyn again. She deleted all of her social media
593
00:42:44.719 --> 00:42:50.280
accounts and seemed to vanish into thin
air. Caitlyn went on the run.
594
00:42:51.320 --> 00:42:54.360
The day after Caitlin was questioned by
police, she sold her black Cheep to
595
00:42:54.400 --> 00:43:00.199
an Austin CarMax dealership for twelve two
hundred dollars. The next day, she
596
00:43:00.199 --> 00:43:06.840
boarded a flight to Austin International Bergstrom
Airport early in the afternoon to Houston Hobby
597
00:43:06.880 --> 00:43:10.599
Airport. Once there, she took
another flight to LaGuardia Airport in New York.
598
00:43:12.360 --> 00:43:15.639
By May seventeenth, when the warrant
was issued for her arrest, she
599
00:43:15.719 --> 00:43:20.119
was long gone. Technically, she
hadn't really done anything wrong, right,
600
00:43:20.599 --> 00:43:23.920
No, well, no one ever
said don't leave town. Oh, I
601
00:43:23.960 --> 00:43:28.800
see what you're saying. Yeah.
Authorities had no idea that she had fled
602
00:43:28.840 --> 00:43:35.000
the state. Eleven days after Caitlyn
left Texas, surveillance footage materialized of her
603
00:43:35.039 --> 00:43:39.760
at Newark Liberty International Airport from May
eighteen, but the marshals couldn't find her
604
00:43:39.880 --> 00:43:45.280
name on any flight manifests. After
they'd performed a search of all outbound flights,
605
00:43:45.760 --> 00:43:50.519
Caitlyn had quite a head start.
In the video from the airport,
606
00:43:50.760 --> 00:43:53.800
Caitlin donned a mask and wore her
yoga mat strapped to her back. It's
607
00:43:53.880 --> 00:43:59.960
unclear where Caitlyn was between May fourteenth
and May seventeenth, but her sister worked
608
00:44:00.119 --> 00:44:05.679
at a holistic camp and the cat
Skills called Camp Haven, a sustainable educational
609
00:44:05.679 --> 00:44:10.480
campground and retreat. Caitlyn likely visited
her and borrowed or stole her passport.
610
00:44:12.360 --> 00:44:15.639
A tipster called authorities days later and
said they'd seen Caitlyn in upstate New York
611
00:44:15.679 --> 00:44:21.320
at Camp Haven. For weeks,
US Marshalls searched for Caitlin. Here's a
612
00:44:21.320 --> 00:44:23.800
brief clip of Caitlyn's dad. We
love you, Katie, and we are
613
00:44:23.840 --> 00:44:28.719
going to figure this out. And
I know how she thinks, and I
614
00:44:28.800 --> 00:44:32.480
know what she believes, and that
I know that she just would not do
615
00:44:32.599 --> 00:44:38.000
something like this. I know her, But do you ever really know anyone.
616
00:44:38.639 --> 00:44:43.079
You'd like to think that you know
your kids, but I guess that's
617
00:44:43.079 --> 00:44:47.280
not always the case. Investigator's only
lead was that Caitlyn loved to teach yoga,
618
00:44:47.320 --> 00:44:51.960
and the last image they'd seen of
her she had her yoga met with
619
00:44:52.000 --> 00:44:55.559
her. They decided to hone in
on that. Another tip came in that
620
00:44:55.639 --> 00:45:01.280
Caitlyn had flown to San Jose Costa
Rica. Caitlin used different names as she
621
00:45:01.400 --> 00:45:06.639
quietly traveled through Costa Rica by bus. She caught her long red hair and
622
00:45:06.719 --> 00:45:10.119
dyed it brown, trying to keep
a low profile. Eventually, she settled
623
00:45:10.159 --> 00:45:15.239
down in the coastal town of Santa
Teresa. I mean, if you're gonna,
624
00:45:15.400 --> 00:45:16.599
if you're gonna, you know,
it could be worse places to go.
625
00:45:19.119 --> 00:45:22.559
She began working and living at Don
John's Surf and Yoga Lodge. She
626
00:45:22.679 --> 00:45:28.159
worked at the reception desk and taught
yoga for room and board. So I
627
00:45:28.840 --> 00:45:34.119
will post an image of a video
of this, But the Don John's Surf
628
00:45:34.159 --> 00:45:38.039
and Yoga Lodge, it looked looks
like a pretty cool place, very casual
629
00:45:38.119 --> 00:45:43.559
and laid back. And there's just
like this video of you know, all
630
00:45:43.599 --> 00:45:46.920
the people that are relaxing there from
the top to the bottom in the buildings.
631
00:45:46.920 --> 00:45:49.880
It's a cool video. I'll post
it. But it looks like him.
632
00:45:50.039 --> 00:45:52.760
We should probably go there for research. I well, it shouldn't be
633
00:45:52.920 --> 00:45:59.599
researched before a case. Well,
I guess she used the name Ari Martin.
634
00:46:00.519 --> 00:46:06.000
Don John's is largely a cooperative,
hostile community. The motto is relaxed
635
00:46:06.000 --> 00:46:09.280
to the max. Many drifters come
to this area to escape one thing or
636
00:46:09.280 --> 00:46:14.960
another, and locals have learned not
to ask too many questions. Caitlyn perhaps
637
00:46:15.039 --> 00:46:19.079
got a little too comfortable and let
her guard down in the Bucolic seaside village
638
00:46:19.079 --> 00:46:24.000
where the lazy sun drenched rays melt
one day into the next seamlessly, she
639
00:46:24.079 --> 00:46:29.360
slept in a bunk room with seven
other people. She formed friendships with some
640
00:46:29.440 --> 00:46:32.239
locals and began going to the bar
even to drink, dance and have fun.
641
00:46:34.039 --> 00:46:38.039
Caitlin even went on some dates.
Forty three days later, on June
642
00:46:38.079 --> 00:46:43.719
twenty ninth, twenty twenty two US
marshalls stormed the front desk where Caitlyn was
643
00:46:43.760 --> 00:46:47.840
working. They demanded to see her
documents, and she said one word Punta
644
00:46:47.880 --> 00:46:54.000
Arenas, meaning that's a location where
she had left her documents. They arrested
645
00:46:54.039 --> 00:46:59.599
her and drove her to the capital
city of San Jose. Among the belongings
646
00:46:59.760 --> 00:47:02.960
left behind at the resort was a
passport with the name Christine Armstrong, her
647
00:47:04.000 --> 00:47:08.119
sisters. It isn't clear if the
passport was stolen, but Christine Armstrong has
648
00:47:08.159 --> 00:47:13.360
not been charged with any crime yet. There was a receipt from a doctor's
649
00:47:13.400 --> 00:47:17.599
office for plastic surgery for six three
hundred and fifty dollars, Caitlyn got a
650
00:47:17.599 --> 00:47:22.639
new nose. Oh wow. The
new nose and hair did make her look
651
00:47:22.679 --> 00:47:27.400
like a different person. Caitlyn denied
having altered her nose, but she had
652
00:47:27.440 --> 00:47:30.920
disappeared from the resort for a few
days in early June. When she resurfaced,
653
00:47:30.960 --> 00:47:35.599
she had a bandage on her nose
and bruising under her eyes. She
654
00:47:35.719 --> 00:47:38.920
told her employer that she'd been in
a surfing accident. She was still wearing
655
00:47:38.960 --> 00:47:43.519
a bandage across her nose when she
was arrested. I had sent you a
656
00:47:43.519 --> 00:47:45.800
picture earlier, and I told you
not to look at it. Can you
657
00:47:45.840 --> 00:47:49.880
look at it now? Oh?
Sure, Yeah, she looks pretty different.
658
00:47:50.679 --> 00:47:52.440
I think she looks really different.
Yeah, the hair, the hair
659
00:47:52.559 --> 00:47:55.400
especially, But yeah, I guess
her face, the nose in her face,
660
00:47:55.440 --> 00:48:00.199
and I think she was probably,
you know, had a plan her
661
00:48:00.239 --> 00:48:02.159
appearance, and she wasn't wearing as
much makeup. Yeah. Yeah, it
662
00:48:02.159 --> 00:48:07.320
looks like she was trying to look
very plain and nondescript. Yeah. Calton
663
00:48:07.440 --> 00:48:10.400
was deported from Costa Rica and extradited
to Texas, where she was held at
664
00:48:10.440 --> 00:48:15.159
the Travis County Jail. Her bond
was set at three point five million dollars.
665
00:48:15.880 --> 00:48:22.119
She pleaded not guilty to the murder
of Moe Wilson. In October,
666
00:48:22.199 --> 00:48:27.599
guards escorted Caitlin to an off site
doctor's appointment. Despite being shackled, she
667
00:48:27.719 --> 00:48:31.519
managed to escape their grasp and ran
with everything she had. She'd been a
668
00:48:31.559 --> 00:48:36.599
competitive runner and it showed. Oh
my, she ran a mile before guards
669
00:48:36.639 --> 00:48:42.000
apprehended her. She was charged with
felony escape. Wow. Other inmates said
670
00:48:42.039 --> 00:48:45.400
that she'd been training for a chance
at an escape. She ran a mile
671
00:48:45.519 --> 00:48:50.079
and shackled. I'm actually kind of
surprised they caught her. Like if you
672
00:48:50.079 --> 00:48:52.519
get if you get a mile without
them catching you, like man, unless
673
00:48:52.519 --> 00:48:55.519
they got in their car something and
caught up with her that way. Maybe
674
00:48:55.760 --> 00:48:59.880
who knows what they are I have
I do have a video of her fleeing,
675
00:49:00.079 --> 00:49:04.320
but yeah, I will post that
too. Is the trial near the
676
00:49:04.400 --> 00:49:07.719
judge enacted a gag order to stop
the leaking of information to the media and
677
00:49:07.800 --> 00:49:15.320
public camera and audio recording was only
allowed during opening and closing statements and while
678
00:49:15.320 --> 00:49:19.679
the verdict was read. The trial
started on November first, twenty twenty three,
679
00:49:20.000 --> 00:49:22.760
so just last month. Yeah,
A slick attorney who was a former
680
00:49:22.840 --> 00:49:29.360
prosecutor, represented Caitlin. He was
confident and cocky. He alleged that Caitlyn
681
00:49:29.400 --> 00:49:31.840
went on the run because she was
afraid of Colin Strickland. He was a
682
00:49:31.920 --> 00:49:37.320
murderer. The attorney claimed that police
didn't test all of the evidence and failed
683
00:49:37.320 --> 00:49:43.639
to consider any other suspect. It
was sometimes there isn't another suspect that it's
684
00:49:43.639 --> 00:49:49.159
always reason for that. He said
the case against her was based on quote
685
00:49:49.199 --> 00:49:54.280
assumptions, confirmation bias, and a
lack of direct evidence like if there is
686
00:49:54.280 --> 00:50:00.159
not a video of someone shooting someone, there like all circumstantial exactly. He
687
00:50:00.199 --> 00:50:02.320
also alleged that a rape kit had
been done on Mo but it had never
688
00:50:02.360 --> 00:50:08.760
been tested. He called the Austin
police sloppy. Among the evidence revealed during
689
00:50:08.800 --> 00:50:14.920
the trial was Caitlin's DNA had been
found on the handlebars of Moe's bike,
690
00:50:15.119 --> 00:50:20.639
which was near the bushes. The
GPS data from Caitlyn's vehicle and her electronic
691
00:50:20.639 --> 00:50:24.480
a footprint was damning. She deleted
a search for Moe's address, purchased two
692
00:50:24.480 --> 00:50:30.360
airline tickets, and created two new
Gmail accounts and a Skype account. She
693
00:50:30.480 --> 00:50:37.639
searched quote can pineapple burn fingerprints and
her name and Mo Wilson's can pineapple burn
694
00:50:37.800 --> 00:50:42.280
fingerprints. It's a really odd thing. Yeah, I'm gonna go with that
695
00:50:42.440 --> 00:50:44.719
too. It's just so I didn't
know that. Was it weird that she
696
00:50:44.760 --> 00:50:47.119
would even think to search that?
And you know, usually I'm pretty I
697
00:50:47.159 --> 00:50:52.079
forgot to research that. Oh man, I was going to ask you.
698
00:50:52.119 --> 00:50:58.480
So I'm assuming there was no evidence
of Caitlin in the house, that Moe
699
00:50:58.559 --> 00:51:00.960
was staying at, no or anything
in the house, not that I know
700
00:51:01.079 --> 00:51:06.920
of. The state focused on Caitlyn's
consciousness of guilt, the fact that she
701
00:51:07.119 --> 00:51:13.079
fled the country using her sister's passport. Anne underwent plastic surgery. Colin Strickland
702
00:51:13.079 --> 00:51:17.119
testified during the trial. He was
belligerent and dismissive during his testimony. When
703
00:51:17.199 --> 00:51:21.719
leaving the courtroom, he shoved a
camera man out of his way. He
704
00:51:21.960 --> 00:51:27.320
just not a good guy. No. An emotional moment during the trial occurred
705
00:51:27.320 --> 00:51:30.960
when footage from a neighbor's ring doorbell
was played and Moe could be heard screaming
706
00:51:31.079 --> 00:51:36.280
before three shotgun blasts were heard.
I heard that video and I did not
707
00:51:36.360 --> 00:51:40.039
want to share it because it was
very emotional. The trial lasted two and
708
00:51:40.119 --> 00:51:44.880
a half weeks, Caitlyn opted not
to take the stand in her defense.
709
00:51:45.920 --> 00:51:50.280
Here's a clip of Karen Moe's mom
reading her victim impact statement at the trial.
710
00:51:50.960 --> 00:51:55.639
I hate what you did to my
beautiful daughter. It was very selfish
711
00:51:55.719 --> 00:52:04.800
and powardly. Final went at on
many eleven. It was cowardly because you
712
00:52:04.920 --> 00:52:10.760
never chose to face her, woman
to woman in a civil conversation. She
713
00:52:10.800 --> 00:52:17.159
would have listened. She was an
amazing listener. She would have cared about
714
00:52:17.159 --> 00:52:23.719
your feelings. She was a caring, empathetic person. If you allowed yourself
715
00:52:23.760 --> 00:52:30.559
to actually know her, you never
ever would have wanted to hurt her.
716
00:52:32.599 --> 00:52:37.920
This never would have happened. You
and Colin could have had a beautiful life
717
00:52:37.960 --> 00:52:46.280
together. You destroyed that you were
owing to your life, your family's loves,
718
00:52:46.639 --> 00:52:53.320
our lives, and crushed the heart
so many more. When you shot
719
00:52:53.480 --> 00:53:00.119
Mariah in the heart, you shot
me in my heart. That's heartbreak.
720
00:53:00.360 --> 00:53:04.960
That is really sad. The audio
there is a little distorted because every time
721
00:53:05.079 --> 00:53:07.119
she was crying and she'd sniffle,
and that that's what you're hearing there.
722
00:53:07.239 --> 00:53:12.920
Yeah. The jury returned the verdict
and under two hours guilty. Caitlyn was
723
00:53:12.960 --> 00:53:16.880
sentenced to ninety years in prison with
a chance at parole in thirty years and
724
00:53:16.960 --> 00:53:22.320
November thirty of her attorneys filed an
appeal. Obviously, that was just a
725
00:53:22.320 --> 00:53:24.360
few days ago, so we just
don't know yet. You don't know yet.
726
00:53:24.599 --> 00:53:29.960
The felony escape charge stemming from Caitlyn's
attempted to escape in October was dropped.
727
00:53:30.119 --> 00:53:35.159
Initially, a second trial addressing those
charges had been scheduled to occur directly
728
00:53:35.199 --> 00:53:39.679
after after the first trial. Yeah, it was wonder why. Yeah,
729
00:53:39.679 --> 00:53:43.599
but sometimes they like to have a
backup plan, like in case something happened
730
00:53:43.599 --> 00:53:45.760
on appeal, maybe you know,
they got her birth date wrong or some
731
00:53:46.000 --> 00:53:50.280
you know, technicality. They probably
I guess they could go back and charge
732
00:53:50.320 --> 00:53:52.000
her again if they they probably know
she's going to probably try it again.
733
00:53:52.000 --> 00:53:57.760
I mean, she's she was determined
to get deterrement. She's just I mean,
734
00:53:57.800 --> 00:54:01.119
she's a smart lady. Di bibolical
I guess I could say. So.
735
00:54:01.239 --> 00:54:07.039
Here's a clip of Mo's dad Eric
after the trial, after the verdict.
736
00:54:08.079 --> 00:54:15.360
Other than prosecution team, there really
are no winners here. This is
737
00:54:15.400 --> 00:54:21.199
not a time for celebration, but
a time for prayer. Time to pray
738
00:54:21.239 --> 00:54:29.880
for our family, our friends and
the family, the Armstrong family and their
739
00:54:29.920 --> 00:54:37.679
friends. This sad story is a
perfect example of why integrity and honesty are
740
00:54:37.719 --> 00:54:45.400
crucial in our personal relationships and how
dishonesty can often lead to unintended consequences.
741
00:54:46.400 --> 00:54:53.840
Selfish manipulation, jealousy, and hatred
never lead to positive outcomes. Violence is
742
00:54:53.880 --> 00:55:00.599
never a good way to solve personal
personal issues. In fact, violence doesn't
743
00:55:00.639 --> 00:55:07.079
solve anything, It only leads to
more suffering. Our lives are changed forever.
744
00:55:08.800 --> 00:55:14.320
But with this challenging ordeal now behind
us, we are ready to move
745
00:55:14.360 --> 00:55:22.400
forward and continue our healing. And
we will do this with Mariah's strong,
746
00:55:22.000 --> 00:55:28.800
determined, gentle and kind spirit,
for we know this is what she would
747
00:55:28.840 --> 00:55:37.360
want us to do. Mariah inspired
everybody everyone who knew her, and we
748
00:55:37.400 --> 00:55:45.000
are dedicated to preserving her legacy.
She expressed a strong desire to serve others
749
00:55:45.119 --> 00:55:52.880
and to give back to her community, and we endeavor to do that with
750
00:55:53.440 --> 00:56:04.760
the Mariah Wilson Foundation established in her
honor. Thank you very much, I
751
00:56:04.960 --> 00:56:07.760
say, both her parents just seem
like really good, empathetic people. The
752
00:56:07.760 --> 00:56:12.280
fact that he suggested, you know, prayers for Caitlyn's family as well,
753
00:56:12.519 --> 00:56:20.320
just says a lot. Sorry,
it's me choking back to yours exceptional people.
754
00:56:20.480 --> 00:56:22.960
Just really and like you said that
that really struck me too, is
755
00:56:22.000 --> 00:56:28.039
like you know these both these families
are suffering, and you know Caitlyn's parents
756
00:56:28.039 --> 00:56:30.920
deserve a little bit of empathy too. Yeah, it's really sad. I
757
00:56:31.000 --> 00:56:35.639
just wanted to say mo was more
than an athlete. She was a daughter,
758
00:56:35.760 --> 00:56:37.119
sister, and her friend to many. She was kind, smart,
759
00:56:37.119 --> 00:56:40.760
dedicated, and a hard worker.
She had big goals and dreams and there's
760
00:56:42.400 --> 00:56:45.360
just no doubt that she would have
achieved them. Yeah. She died way,
761
00:56:45.480 --> 00:56:49.599
way, way too young. Specialized
the cycling equipment company where Moe had
762
00:56:49.599 --> 00:56:52.960
previously worked. Set in an Instagram
post, like many of you, were
763
00:56:52.000 --> 00:56:57.840
devastated by the tragic loss of a
friend who exuded so much inspiration, determination
764
00:56:57.960 --> 00:57:02.320
and joy. Betsy what a journalist, fellow, and who said that's one
765
00:57:02.360 --> 00:57:06.400
reason why I covered her so much. She just kept winning all these races,
766
00:57:06.400 --> 00:57:08.679
and I thought, wow, this
is one to watch. It's it's
767
00:57:08.679 --> 00:57:13.199
a small sport in terms of number
of pros who do it for a living.
768
00:57:13.840 --> 00:57:16.079
She immediately stood out. I saw
funny clips left because I saw a
769
00:57:16.079 --> 00:57:21.480
funny clipper. Betsy was talking about
how you because Mo had so many first
770
00:57:21.519 --> 00:57:25.719
finishes the year that she died.
When race she came in second and Betsy
771
00:57:25.760 --> 00:57:29.079
was like, Oh, I can't
believe she came in second. Well,
772
00:57:29.079 --> 00:57:32.519
she had a flat tire, so
you know that's why. That's the only
773
00:57:32.559 --> 00:57:37.639
reason she came in second. Mo's
friend Danica Ashnaal also said in an Instagram
774
00:57:37.679 --> 00:57:42.360
post, quote, now, now
what we must do is take her light,
775
00:57:42.519 --> 00:57:45.199
absorb it into ourselves, and shine
it on others as brightly as she
776
00:57:45.320 --> 00:57:50.239
did. There was a bubble of
positivity and joy around her, and we
777
00:57:50.360 --> 00:57:53.679
all wanted to be in her bubble. Moe was a former elite alpine ski
778
00:57:53.800 --> 00:58:00.920
racer turned endurance cyclist and was on
a beautiful trajectory not just to win races,
779
00:58:00.960 --> 00:58:05.800
but to win in open hearts.
Moe's family felt compelled to make a
780
00:58:05.840 --> 00:58:12.199
statement about her relationship status after speculation
rose online about her relationship with Colin.
781
00:58:13.199 --> 00:58:16.440
They said, quote, while we
will not elaborate about the ongoing investigation,
782
00:58:16.599 --> 00:58:21.039
we do feel it's important to clarify
that at the time of her death,
783
00:58:21.440 --> 00:58:25.639
those closest to her clearly understood directly
from Mariah that she was not in a
784
00:58:25.719 --> 00:58:35.079
romantic relationship with anyone. So that's
the story of Mo Wilson. Very well
785
00:58:35.159 --> 00:58:37.880
told. Thank you, very sad, Rest in peace, Mo. Our
786
00:58:37.920 --> 00:58:43.000
thoughts are with the Wilson family this
holiday season. Do you feel as if
787
00:58:43.119 --> 00:58:46.320
justice was served? Yeah, it
seems like it. I mean, it
788
00:58:46.320 --> 00:58:52.039
definitely seems like I guess my only
question originally was whether Colin knew about it
789
00:58:52.159 --> 00:58:54.639
or had anything to do with it, But it sounds like he's pretty much
790
00:58:54.800 --> 00:59:00.239
other than being maybe not the best
guy in the world and seeing multiple women
791
00:59:00.280 --> 00:59:02.119
at the same time, he didn't. It's pretty clear that he had nothing
792
00:59:02.159 --> 00:59:07.119
to do with her murder, didn't
have any knowledge of it, nothing like
793
00:59:07.159 --> 00:59:09.960
that, right exactly. I think
that's my belief. Yeah, Colin is
794
00:59:10.000 --> 00:59:14.199
a dirt bag, but he's not. I don't believe he's a murderer.
795
00:59:14.239 --> 00:59:20.159
And I think that Caitlin just got
caught up in the moment. And I
796
00:59:20.159 --> 00:59:23.119
think jealousy is a bad, bad
thing. Well, I think it was
797
00:59:23.679 --> 00:59:28.360
compounded over months and months of you
know, are they or are they?
798
00:59:28.400 --> 00:59:31.639
Or what's going on? And yeah, reading someone's text messages. Can I
799
00:59:31.679 --> 00:59:35.159
mean, just just don't do it. I ever gonna lead anywhere good,
800
00:59:35.280 --> 00:59:45.400
No, it's not you were a
little distracted by the Amazon truck business.
801
00:59:45.480 --> 00:59:47.800
But it all get some weird.
It was crazy, Like we're in this
802
00:59:47.920 --> 00:59:52.480
quiet little cul de sac and all
of a sudden there's two Amazon trucks and
803
00:59:52.519 --> 00:59:54.360
one is backed up to the other
one. They were like backed up to
804
00:59:54.400 --> 00:59:59.440
each other, and I really am
not sure what happened. All I know
805
00:59:59.480 --> 01:00:01.159
is there's a really big box on
our front porch, or there was.
806
01:00:01.280 --> 01:00:05.239
I know that is a really big
box. I'm a little scared to open
807
01:00:05.280 --> 01:00:07.039
it, honestly that we've had a
couple that I'm like, holy moly,
808
01:00:07.079 --> 01:00:09.880
what did I do? Sometimes they
packed you know, it could be a
809
01:00:09.880 --> 01:00:13.639
really big box, but just a
tiny little thing inside you never know.
810
01:00:13.920 --> 01:00:17.039
Well I know what's in it,
I'm pretty sure, and I did it
811
01:00:17.039 --> 01:00:22.519
a small house. Well it's some
So our daughter, can she hear me?
812
01:00:22.559 --> 01:00:28.079
I don't think she listens to the
podcast. She's almost a teacher,
813
01:00:28.480 --> 01:00:31.559
it's almost going to graduate, and
she's kind of freaking out about having things
814
01:00:31.559 --> 01:00:35.880
for her classroom. Yeah, because
as we know, teachers have to buy
815
01:00:36.199 --> 01:00:38.159
to buy a bunch of their own
stuff. So I bought her a few
816
01:00:38.360 --> 01:00:43.480
like toys for the classroom. So
that's I think that's what's in that big
817
01:00:43.480 --> 01:00:46.679
box, very large. What are
the biggest set of Lincoln logs you can
818
01:00:46.719 --> 01:00:50.280
buy? Because I think that's a
great toy, right, that's a really
819
01:00:50.440 --> 01:00:53.199
big set of Lincoln logs. It's
a big box. But we also had
820
01:00:53.199 --> 01:01:00.239
a new family member this week.
What did I buy it for myself?
821
01:01:00.239 --> 01:01:04.400
It was not It was a gift
for the whole family. We finally got
822
01:01:04.599 --> 01:01:08.079
so cute scooting around the house.
It hads like a little person one for
823
01:01:08.199 --> 01:01:12.079
years, but I finally was like
black Fried and like, I just we
824
01:01:12.159 --> 01:01:15.679
need to do it because I don't
have time to clean anymore. So yeah,
825
01:01:15.679 --> 01:01:17.760
it's pretty cool. The cats really
really love it. Oh my gosh,
826
01:01:17.920 --> 01:01:22.320
no, they they do not like
there was a big fight last night
827
01:01:22.440 --> 01:01:27.400
and our house underneath the Christmas tree. Holy moly, I thought Cosmo was
828
01:01:27.400 --> 01:01:30.159
going to kill Clover. It was
bad. It's a stressful time of year
829
01:01:30.199 --> 01:01:34.360
for everybody, and especially when you
bring a roomba into the house. Well,
830
01:01:34.400 --> 01:01:38.360
I think they just he thinks that
he has DIBs. First, he
831
01:01:38.440 --> 01:01:44.320
likes he likes the Christmas tree.
Yeah, I see you brought your new
832
01:01:44.400 --> 01:01:49.800
Stanley to the I did a whim. I got rich a Stanley. Now
833
01:01:49.840 --> 01:01:54.079
he's a Stanley, girl, Tell
him a Stanley. I think everyone knows
834
01:01:54.079 --> 01:01:59.400
it's yeah, everybody knows that Stanley. A lot of people are using the
835
01:01:59.440 --> 01:02:01.719
Stanley, but your rate reading of
the Stanley, I like it. I'm
836
01:02:01.760 --> 01:02:06.360
not a big water bottle kind of
everyone else in our house always uses water
837
01:02:06.440 --> 01:02:09.559
bottle. I'm trying to adapt because
everyone else uses a water bottle, so
838
01:02:09.599 --> 01:02:15.840
I'm trying to. Okay, it's
nice to always have it in your reach.
839
01:02:15.920 --> 01:02:20.679
And all right, well, I
think that's all we have for today.
840
01:02:21.320 --> 01:02:23.800
Please don't forget to rate, review, subscribe and like. It really
