Judi Buenoano

Born Anna Lou Welty in 1943, Judi Buenoano had many names and many lovers over her 54 years. Men in Judi’s life had a way of suffering a tragic fate when their affairs fizzled out; her husband, boyfriend, and even her son all died by her hand, which earned her the title “Black Widow”. A fourth man survived an attempt on his life which led to Judi’s ultimate demise and eventual execution in 1998.

00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:02.960
Hi. I'm Tina and I'm Rich. And if there's one thing we've learned
2
00:00:02.960 --> 00:00:06.000
in over twenty years of marriage,
it's that some days you'll feel like killing
3
00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:10.480
your wife and some days you'll feel
like killing your husband. Welcome to love,
4
00:00:10.679 --> 00:00:29.320
Mary kill Ay Rich, Hey Tina, how are you? I'm okay?
5
00:00:29.359 --> 00:00:33.960
How are you just okay today?
Yeah? I just came from the
6
00:00:34.479 --> 00:00:39.799
dental the oral surgeon. Oh yeah, I gotta have some stuff done.
7
00:00:39.679 --> 00:00:43.520
Yeah, it's not going to be
fun. What stuff are you having done?
8
00:00:43.560 --> 00:00:46.159
Just to tell our listener friends,
you already told me, but I
9
00:00:46.200 --> 00:00:51.479
have to have an implant. Like
one of my teeth, the root is
10
00:00:52.119 --> 00:00:54.960
I don't know, decaying or something. So they have to basically pull out
11
00:00:54.960 --> 00:00:58.200
the tooth and then do an implant. And it's a process that takes like
12
00:00:58.399 --> 00:01:00.200
three months. Like they have to
pull out the twoth, they have to
13
00:01:00.200 --> 00:01:03.480
put like a bone graft in there, which they told me today. The
14
00:01:03.480 --> 00:01:07.079
bone graft they put in it's from
a cadaver. It's like, oh,
15
00:01:07.079 --> 00:01:11.359
it don't worry though, it's it's
sanitized and it's fun that they had to
16
00:01:11.359 --> 00:01:14.480
tell you it was sanitized. Yeah. But then while I was there,
17
00:01:14.560 --> 00:01:17.319
they also said, you know what, you have a wisdom tooth that should
18
00:01:17.359 --> 00:01:19.680
probably come out too, because it's
just like a ticking time bomb in your
19
00:01:19.680 --> 00:01:25.480
mouth. So so we should discuss
this off air. But I thought that
20
00:01:25.560 --> 00:01:27.640
you had all of your wisdom teeth, but you're saying you only have one.
21
00:01:29.159 --> 00:01:32.799
I don't. I don't know.
I know I at least have one.
22
00:01:33.319 --> 00:01:36.040
I might have more than one,
but you'd never had them removed.
23
00:01:36.079 --> 00:01:38.840
I never had them removed. But
I don't think I have like four of
24
00:01:38.920 --> 00:01:42.040
them, or however many you're supposed
to have. I mean, everyone has
25
00:01:42.159 --> 00:01:46.200
four. I don't know why you
wouldn't unless they're deeply impacted. That is
26
00:01:46.200 --> 00:01:49.079
actually a question you should ask your
dentist, just for my curiosity, because
27
00:01:49.079 --> 00:01:53.040
I think it would be highly unusual
for you not to have four wisdom teeth.
28
00:01:53.079 --> 00:01:55.319
Yeah. I don't think I have
four. I think I may have
29
00:01:55.359 --> 00:01:59.480
three. Well, we could go
on about your teeth. It would be
30
00:01:59.519 --> 00:02:02.760
so much fun. Oh, so
fall is upon us, Fall is upon
31
00:02:02.840 --> 00:02:07.280
us. It's very fall like here, some snow flurries in the air.
32
00:02:07.400 --> 00:02:12.560
We had Halloween, kind of boring, real quiet around here. Normally we
33
00:02:12.639 --> 00:02:15.439
have way more trigger treaters. Yeah, it was very quiet, kind of
34
00:02:15.439 --> 00:02:19.520
strange speaking of Halloween. This doesn't
it's not a really good segue. But
35
00:02:19.560 --> 00:02:23.080
I brought a snack. Oh good, do you want it? Do I
36
00:02:23.159 --> 00:02:29.879
want it? We don't know what
it is, of course, speaking of
37
00:02:29.919 --> 00:02:31.919
it, I just wanted to say, one of our lovely listeners, should
38
00:02:31.919 --> 00:02:36.520
we talk about this real quick?
Sure, we have a po box where
39
00:02:36.639 --> 00:02:39.439
you know, people can send us
stuff, and not a lot of people
40
00:02:39.479 --> 00:02:43.400
have wanted to send us out,
which is fine. But one of our
41
00:02:43.439 --> 00:02:46.000
listeners did send us something. And
we thought that our post office, our
42
00:02:46.039 --> 00:02:50.280
small town post office, would notify
us if we received something, and they
43
00:02:50.280 --> 00:02:53.080
didn't. No, they sure didn't. And we hadn't checked it in a
44
00:02:53.080 --> 00:02:57.280
long time. And so our lovely
friends sent us some cookies. And I'm
45
00:02:57.319 --> 00:02:58.800
still going to eat them, but
she was like, oh, you don't
46
00:02:58.840 --> 00:03:00.879
have to, they're probably staying.
I'm like, no, I have I
47
00:03:00.879 --> 00:03:06.599
will eat anything. So we will
do that on the next episode. So
48
00:03:06.639 --> 00:03:08.919
I made you something called date Bark, and I know you're gonna be like,
49
00:03:08.919 --> 00:03:14.240
oh, it's delicious. Yeah,
but it's a viral recipe. It's
50
00:03:14.240 --> 00:03:21.159
a TikTok recipe. And I know
you love a good food trend, but
51
00:03:21.240 --> 00:03:24.759
you take dates and you pit them
if and then you like take a rolling
52
00:03:24.759 --> 00:03:29.639
pin and you kind of squish them
into whatever shape, and you like cobblestones,
53
00:03:29.680 --> 00:03:34.080
you want them to stick together.
And then I put melted peanut butter,
54
00:03:34.879 --> 00:03:38.319
which melted peanut butter is delic Yeah, that sounds good. And then
55
00:03:38.319 --> 00:03:40.360
I chopped up you can use I
think this is one of those recipes it's
56
00:03:40.400 --> 00:03:49.039
highly adaptable. Use whatever you want. I used chopped up what are cashews,
57
00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:53.280
and then melted some chocolate chips and
put that on top of the cashews.
58
00:03:53.280 --> 00:03:55.719
And then there's a little bit of
like a flaked salt on it.
59
00:03:55.800 --> 00:03:59.960
Okay, wells starting to sound more
interesting the first part. It sounds like,
60
00:04:00.039 --> 00:04:02.280
I mean, it looks good.
Yeah, I did taste it already,
61
00:04:02.280 --> 00:04:04.439
but we're going to take a quick
break and we'll be right back.
62
00:04:11.759 --> 00:04:15.759
Well, I liked everything about that
except the date. If you could just
63
00:04:15.759 --> 00:04:17.240
do it without the date, I
think it'd be perfect. Well, the
64
00:04:17.319 --> 00:04:20.920
date is supposed to deliver a little
bit of fiber and you know, healthiness
65
00:04:20.959 --> 00:04:24.360
to it helps you feel good about
you. Didn't like the date part at
66
00:04:24.360 --> 00:04:27.959
all. I mean it didn't bother
me much, but I didn't love that
67
00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:31.519
part. I thought it was pretty
good. But our dates are they're so
68
00:04:31.720 --> 00:04:35.040
old that I couldn't even read the
use best buy to date on the bottom
69
00:04:35.120 --> 00:04:39.079
of the package. So I think
maybe it would be better if the date
70
00:04:39.199 --> 00:04:42.480
was free Maybe maybe, Yeah,
I would have made all the difference in
71
00:04:42.480 --> 00:04:45.000
the world. I forgot to mention. I did put a little bit of
72
00:04:45.079 --> 00:04:48.399
coconut oil into the chocolate chip so
it hardened on the top, and then
73
00:04:48.399 --> 00:04:50.680
I put it in the freezer.
I don't know if it needs to stay
74
00:04:50.680 --> 00:04:55.120
in the freezer, but I think
it was pretty good cold, Yeah,
75
00:04:55.240 --> 00:04:58.560
very good. Okay, enough about
that, So yeah, one more thing
76
00:04:58.600 --> 00:05:02.720
before we get into today case.
When we started doing advertising and our Patreon,
77
00:05:02.879 --> 00:05:06.600
we committed to giving at least twenty
five percent of all our proceeds to
78
00:05:06.720 --> 00:05:11.399
charity, and every month we pick
a new charity. So as it's our
79
00:05:11.439 --> 00:05:15.160
first episode that we're recording in November, we wanted to share that we were
80
00:05:15.199 --> 00:05:19.480
able to donate one hundred and fifty
dollars to Randy's House of Angels and that
81
00:05:19.600 --> 00:05:26.199
is a charity associated with the Randy
Randy Randy Trim Trimble. Yeah, we
82
00:05:26.240 --> 00:05:29.759
did that case several months ago and
her mom, I'm in a cheer of
83
00:05:29.800 --> 00:05:32.480
talking about our because just admire her
so much. Yeah, her name,
84
00:05:32.560 --> 00:05:36.319
her mom's name is Nancy Chavaz and
she started Randy's House of Angels, which
85
00:05:36.360 --> 00:05:42.680
supports children of domestic domestic abuse.
Yeah. So it's a great cause and
86
00:05:42.680 --> 00:05:45.480
we're so happy to be able to
do that, and we owe it to
87
00:05:45.680 --> 00:05:48.600
all of you who are listening.
Whenever you hear an ad on our podcast,
88
00:05:48.759 --> 00:05:53.480
just know that we're giving back as
much as we can and it means
89
00:05:53.480 --> 00:05:56.000
so much to us, and we're
so proud and happy to do it,
90
00:05:56.040 --> 00:05:59.839
and we're so grateful to you,
our listeners, for hanging in there with
91
00:05:59.920 --> 00:06:03.160
us. Us. Today, I'm
going to tell you the story of Judy
92
00:06:03.240 --> 00:06:08.800
Bueno Anno. And she is a
horrible person. Do you know. Do
93
00:06:08.839 --> 00:06:13.279
you know Judy? Judy also heard
the name. She's also called the black
94
00:06:13.360 --> 00:06:16.480
widow, but a lot of ever
man, any woman that kills her husband
95
00:06:16.839 --> 00:06:19.079
is called a black widow. It's
true, it's true. And I was
96
00:06:19.120 --> 00:06:21.360
like, oh, she's the black
No, there's a lot of black widows.
97
00:06:21.399 --> 00:06:26.360
I think I saw a list of
like the top ten ten black widows.
98
00:06:27.600 --> 00:06:31.199
Speaking of black widows, they are
named such because the female commonly eats
99
00:06:31.199 --> 00:06:35.639
her partner after mating. Many spiders
do this. Female black widow spiders are
100
00:06:35.639 --> 00:06:41.079
shiny and black when mature. Black
widow spiders have an hourglass shaped marking on
101
00:06:41.079 --> 00:06:44.560
the underside of their abdomen, which, although most commonly red, may range
102
00:06:44.560 --> 00:06:47.680
in color from white to yellow to
various shades of orange and red. Black
103
00:06:47.680 --> 00:06:51.800
widowed spiders also have a small,
usually red colored dot near their spinnerets,
104
00:06:53.240 --> 00:06:58.439
which is separate from the hourglass.
Males bear similar marks, however the marks
105
00:06:58.439 --> 00:07:01.720
are smaller, less prominent, and
dully colored. A large female black widow
106
00:07:01.720 --> 00:07:06.680
spider can grow to one point five
inches including leg span. Male black widow
107
00:07:06.720 --> 00:07:11.560
spiders are half the size. They
are usually dark brown with varying colors of
108
00:07:11.600 --> 00:07:15.600
stripes or dots, with no hourglass
mark. Eating a black widow spider will
109
00:07:15.639 --> 00:07:18.199
not normally kill a small predator like
a bird. However, the sickness that
110
00:07:18.240 --> 00:07:24.319
follows digestion is enough for the creature
to remember that the bright red marking means
111
00:07:24.439 --> 00:07:29.279
do not eat male black widow spiders, being less venomous or less of a
112
00:07:29.360 --> 00:07:33.839
threat to predators. Some large birds
can eat male widows without adverse effects,
113
00:07:33.879 --> 00:07:40.839
and so only avoid female spiders.
Female black widow spiders can produce four to
114
00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:45.759
nine eggsacs in one summer, each
containing about four hundred to three thousand,
115
00:07:45.879 --> 00:07:47.920
six hundred eggs. I can tell
I'm losing you or right, I'm going
116
00:07:47.959 --> 00:07:51.600
to wrap this up. Incubation is
twenty to thirty days. Rarely do more
117
00:07:51.600 --> 00:07:57.800
than one hundred spider links survive this
process. An average thirty will survive through
118
00:07:57.800 --> 00:08:01.079
the first molting due to cannibalism,
lack of food, or lack of proper
119
00:08:01.120 --> 00:08:07.920
shelter. Man. My point in
telling you this is that if only judaiis
120
00:08:07.000 --> 00:08:13.759
Anna lou Welty Shultz Goodyear, Morris
Buenano was marked to warn her prey from
121
00:08:13.879 --> 00:08:16.879
her web of lies and deceit.
Oh, bringing it all back. That's
122
00:08:16.879 --> 00:08:22.439
great. I always learned so much. I mean I was going somewhere.
123
00:08:22.519 --> 00:08:24.120
Yeah, no, it's very interesting
stuff. I'm just glad I am not.
124
00:08:24.279 --> 00:08:26.680
I could tell you were totally glazed, so I apologize. No,
125
00:08:26.720 --> 00:08:31.399
not all. Sometimes I think things
are interesting, irrelevant, and yeah,
126
00:08:31.440 --> 00:08:37.320
you mistook my look of interest for
being glazed over. But I'm just thankful
127
00:08:37.320 --> 00:08:41.639
that I am not a male black
widow spider. It is interesting to me
128
00:08:41.679 --> 00:08:46.440
that they're so much smaller and weaker
than the females. Yeah, Judy wrote
129
00:08:46.440 --> 00:08:50.960
the following in a scrap book while
in prison. Don't be fooled by me.
130
00:08:50.200 --> 00:08:54.840
Don't be fooled by the face I
wear, For I wear a thousand
131
00:08:54.879 --> 00:08:58.559
masks, masks I'm afraid to take
off. None of them are me.
132
00:08:58.960 --> 00:09:01.960
Pretending is an R that's second nature
to me. Don't be fooled. I
133
00:09:03.039 --> 00:09:07.360
give the impression that I'm secure,
that all is sunny and unruffled with me
134
00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:11.240
within as well as without. That
confidence is my name, and coolness my
135
00:09:11.360 --> 00:09:16.879
game, that the water's calm and
I'm in command, and that I need
136
00:09:16.879 --> 00:09:20.200
no one. But don't believe me, please. Oh it's like a regular
137
00:09:20.240 --> 00:09:26.080
old poet. She kept herself busy. On March thirtieth, nineteen ninety eight,
138
00:09:26.279 --> 00:09:31.279
five days before her fifty fifth birthday, Judy Bueno Ano, also known
139
00:09:31.320 --> 00:09:35.000
as Anna Lou Welty, Anna Schultz, Judaias Goodyear, Judy Morris, Judaias
140
00:09:35.080 --> 00:09:41.000
Bueno Ano and Judy Goodyear, was
given her final meal of steamed broccoli and
141
00:09:41.080 --> 00:09:46.919
asparagus, fresh strawberries, and hot
tea. What would your last meal be?
142
00:09:48.320 --> 00:09:52.600
Definitely wouldn't be steamed no, I
was really shocked by that. It's
143
00:09:52.639 --> 00:09:56.559
really weird. Probably a big old
cheeseburger, you think, Yeah, probably,
144
00:09:58.120 --> 00:10:01.559
I don't know. I'll let you
know. Her legal team's last minute
145
00:10:01.600 --> 00:10:05.519
appeals fell on deaf years and were
unsuccessful. A small circle at the top
146
00:10:05.559 --> 00:10:09.440
of her head was shaved, where
later an electrode would be placed. Judy
147
00:10:09.480 --> 00:10:13.000
slowly walked the thirty feet from her
cell, where she had sat watching a
148
00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:18.879
small black and white TV, to
the darkened execution chamber. Various clergy members
149
00:10:18.879 --> 00:10:22.039
in her family had visited her through
the morning, and the curtain gallery sat
150
00:10:22.080 --> 00:10:28.120
twenty four uneasy people, twelve witnesses
and twelve members of the press who watched
151
00:10:28.120 --> 00:10:31.639
through a glass partition. As Judy
was strapped into the hideously medieval looking electric
152
00:10:31.720 --> 00:10:37.600
chair, her normally impassive face was
a wash in fear. The death warrant,
153
00:10:37.679 --> 00:10:39.879
freshly signed by the governor, was
read to her before she was asked
154
00:10:39.879 --> 00:10:43.240
if she had any final words.
She simply said, no, sir.
155
00:10:45.120 --> 00:10:48.759
The electrode was then placed on the
bald patch on her head that would deliver
156
00:10:48.879 --> 00:10:52.519
an excruciating jolt of electricity to her
brain. A black veil was placed over
157
00:10:52.559 --> 00:10:56.879
her head of short salt and pepper
great hair before the switch was flipped,
158
00:10:56.919 --> 00:11:01.559
delivering two thousand volts of electricity through
her body. It only took thirty eight
159
00:11:01.559 --> 00:11:07.600
seconds before Judy took her last breath
and was declared dead. Judy was the
160
00:11:07.639 --> 00:11:11.960
third woman executed in the US after
the Supreme Court had reinstated the death penalty
161
00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:16.480
in nineteen seventy seven. Only eighteen
women have been executed in the US since
162
00:11:16.559 --> 00:11:20.559
nineteen seventy seven, the most recent
in January of twenty twenty three. Judy
163
00:11:20.679 --> 00:11:24.679
and Linda Lyon Block were the only
two that died by electric chair. All
164
00:11:24.720 --> 00:11:28.679
others have died by lethal injection.
Judy was the first woman to be put
165
00:11:28.720 --> 00:11:33.159
to death in Florida since eighteen forty
eight. She died a born again Christian
166
00:11:33.200 --> 00:11:39.519
and maintained her innocence to the very
end. Interesting, you said only thirty
167
00:11:39.519 --> 00:11:41.360
eight seconds. That sounds like an
eternity to me. I can't. It's
168
00:11:41.399 --> 00:11:46.519
just it's so terrifying to think about
that type of thing. But well,
169
00:11:46.559 --> 00:11:50.399
gratefully, I think the odds of
you dying in the electric chair are pretty
170
00:11:50.440 --> 00:11:52.320
much zero. Well, because you're
a good person, pretty pretty close to
171
00:11:52.399 --> 00:11:56.960
zero. You'd never know I should
caution the listener that Judy was a pathological
172
00:11:58.039 --> 00:12:01.000
liar, so her story is difficult
to tell. It's hard to know where
173
00:12:01.080 --> 00:12:07.720
fax end and fiction begins. Judias
Anna lou Welty was born in April fourth,
174
00:12:07.840 --> 00:12:11.840
nineteen forty three, in Kuana,
Texas, just below the Panhandle near
175
00:12:11.840 --> 00:12:16.000
the Oklahoma border. There is some
confusion to her real name. Her father
176
00:12:16.120 --> 00:12:18.879
said her birth name was Anna Lou
Welty. Although she had many aliases,
177
00:12:18.960 --> 00:12:22.840
like we've already discussed, she most
often went by Judy, so that's what
178
00:12:22.879 --> 00:12:28.120
we will call her. Judy is
sometimes spelled with an I and sometimes spelled
179
00:12:28.159 --> 00:12:30.759
with a Y, so it's okay. Her name is just all over the
180
00:12:30.799 --> 00:12:35.759
place I went with I. She
was the third child of four, the
181
00:12:35.799 --> 00:12:39.679
only girl. Judy's mother, Judias
Mary lou Northam, died before Jude each
182
00:12:39.720 --> 00:12:46.600
turn two from tuberculosis. Judy claims
she was a full blooded Mesquite Apache Indian
183
00:12:46.720 --> 00:12:52.240
and that Geronimo was her great great
grandfather. Judy's father, Isiah Jesse Otto
184
00:12:52.279 --> 00:12:56.879
Welty, who later went by Jesse
wain Welty, was an itinerant farm worker.
185
00:12:56.720 --> 00:13:01.279
After her mother's death, Judy and
her brother Robert, who was an
186
00:13:01.279 --> 00:13:05.279
infant, were sent west to live
with her grandmother, while the two old
187
00:13:05.480 --> 00:13:09.559
older brothers were put up for adoption. Judy and Robert lived with various relatives
188
00:13:09.639 --> 00:13:16.559
and sometimes in foster homes, frequently
suffering through physical and sexual abuse. When
189
00:13:16.639 --> 00:13:20.240
Judias was twelve and old enough to
be sent to the orphanage, her father
190
00:13:20.320 --> 00:13:24.559
remarried for what Judy later said was
about the seventh time she and her younger
191
00:13:24.600 --> 00:13:28.720
brother were well. She says,
but you can't believe anything. Don't remember,
192
00:13:28.759 --> 00:13:33.000
you can't believe anything that, she
says. She and her younger brother
193
00:13:33.039 --> 00:13:35.120
were taken to live with her father
and his new wife and her children in
194
00:13:35.240 --> 00:13:39.639
Roswell, New Mexico. She and
Robert were badly abused by their father and
195
00:13:39.639 --> 00:13:45.480
stepmother, Beaten, starved, and
burned with cigarettes. Judy was treated like
196
00:13:45.519 --> 00:13:48.720
a servant and forced to miss meals. If a spot of grease was found
197
00:13:48.720 --> 00:13:52.080
on the stove she had cleaned,
she was forced to sit at the table
198
00:13:52.080 --> 00:13:56.240
and watch her family eat while her
stomach grumbled hungrily. One night, when
199
00:13:56.279 --> 00:14:00.480
she was fourteen, Judy became so
enraged she poured hot grease from the iron
200
00:14:00.519 --> 00:14:05.039
skillet on her stepsisters, and then
walloped her stepmother with it, who her
201
00:14:05.080 --> 00:14:09.000
father drove her to the county jail, where she spent the next sixty days
202
00:14:09.360 --> 00:14:13.279
among the town drunks and prostitutes.
How old was she? Fourteen? Wow,
203
00:14:13.320 --> 00:14:18.519
that's some punishment right. When her
sentence was served, Judy opted to
204
00:14:18.559 --> 00:14:22.799
live at a juvenile detention center rather
than return home, and attended Foothills High
205
00:14:22.840 --> 00:14:28.879
School in Albuquerque, a juvenile detention
center. She graduated at age sixteen in
206
00:14:28.960 --> 00:14:33.759
nineteen fifty nine. She remained estranged
from her family. She once said of
207
00:14:33.840 --> 00:14:37.559
her brother Robert, I wouldn't spit
down his throat if his guts were on
208
00:14:37.600 --> 00:14:43.480
fire, Okay. In nineteen sixty
Judy changed her name to Anna Schultz and
209
00:14:43.519 --> 00:14:48.200
worked as a nurse's aide. She
became pregnant age seventeen by a pilot from
210
00:14:48.200 --> 00:14:52.080
a nearby Air Force base. Michael
Arthur Schultz was born in March nineteen sixty
211
00:14:52.120 --> 00:14:56.519
one to a teen mother who was
ill equipped to handle motherhood, never having
212
00:14:56.559 --> 00:15:01.559
had a loving relationship in her life. Michael had a history of developmental delays
213
00:15:01.559 --> 00:15:05.279
and medical issues dating back to his
early childhood, along with a lower than
214
00:15:05.320 --> 00:15:11.200
average IQ ranging from eighty five to
ninety one. Do you know anything about
215
00:15:11.200 --> 00:15:13.360
the IQ other than your one hundred
exceptionally? Well, yeah, other than
216
00:15:13.360 --> 00:15:18.720
that one hundreds average from hundreds average. An IQ below seventy is considered intellectually
217
00:15:18.759 --> 00:15:24.080
disabled. So he was, you
know, not super low, but yeah,
218
00:15:24.799 --> 00:15:28.080
lower than average. Yeah. Everyone
who knew him said he was slow.
219
00:15:28.279 --> 00:15:31.600
He had suffered from pica. Do
you know what that is? I
220
00:15:31.639 --> 00:15:35.960
do not. Pika is a pregnant
women get it sometimes, but he'd had
221
00:15:35.960 --> 00:15:39.679
it from childhood. It's eating non
food items such as dirt or clay.
222
00:15:39.799 --> 00:15:43.759
Oh, and as a young child, he'd eaten paint chips from a house
223
00:15:43.799 --> 00:15:48.279
they lived in that was built in
the nineteen twenties. Michael also had chronic
224
00:15:48.320 --> 00:15:54.399
respiratory infections asthma and inuysis into adulthood. Poor kid, you know what in
225
00:15:54.440 --> 00:16:00.120
eurysis is? Uh? Not exactly
Okay. He was violent and hard to
226
00:16:00.120 --> 00:16:03.919
discipline, according to his mother,
but other people said he was very sweet
227
00:16:03.919 --> 00:16:11.759
and kind. Judy sent Michael to
the Montenari Residential Treatment Center for Disturbed Children
228
00:16:11.919 --> 00:16:17.639
for children with psychiatric problems due to
his hyperactivity and acting out, and he
229
00:16:17.720 --> 00:16:22.720
lived there from about age eight to
age thirteen. Michael likely acted out to
230
00:16:22.759 --> 00:16:26.639
get his mother's attention, though he
loved her and wanted her approval, but
231
00:16:26.720 --> 00:16:30.399
he would never get it. Judy
fell in love a twenty eight year old
232
00:16:30.399 --> 00:16:34.519
man named James Goodyear, an Air
Force mechanic who had reached the rank of
233
00:16:34.559 --> 00:16:40.039
sergeant. They married in November nineteen
sixty two, after knowing each other for
234
00:16:40.120 --> 00:16:44.960
only three months. Judy was just
nineteen. They lived in Roswell, New
235
00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:48.759
Mexico, and occasionally saw Judy's father
and brother, Gerald. James adopted young
236
00:16:48.799 --> 00:16:52.879
Michael, who changed his last name
to Goodyear. In nineteen sixty six,
237
00:16:53.080 --> 00:16:57.960
Judy and James welcomed another son,
James Goodyear Junior. A daughter, Kimberly,
238
00:16:59.080 --> 00:17:03.480
came along shortly after in nineteen sixty
seven. Judy thought Michael was disruptive
239
00:17:03.519 --> 00:17:07.599
towards James and Kimberly and kept him
away as much as possible. A friends
240
00:17:07.680 --> 00:17:11.920
or family came for a visit,
Judy made Michael stand a room by himself.
241
00:17:12.480 --> 00:17:17.240
Isn't that sad? I think he
had like sometimes he would have like
242
00:17:17.440 --> 00:17:22.839
a nanny or a helper, and
Judy would tell the nanny to take Michael
243
00:17:22.880 --> 00:17:26.359
for a ride in the car until
the company left the family moved to Orlando,
244
00:17:26.440 --> 00:17:32.880
Florida, where Judy opened a daycare
called Conway Acre's Childcare Center. James,
245
00:17:32.960 --> 00:17:36.839
still in the Air Force, left
for a tour in Vietnam. Judy
246
00:17:36.839 --> 00:17:40.599
carried on an affair while he was
away. When he returned home, he
247
00:17:40.720 --> 00:17:45.640
quickly fell ill and was hospitalized for
extreme nausea, tingling in his extremities,
248
00:17:45.039 --> 00:17:52.799
hallucinations, and lightheadedness. Doctors repuzzled
what was causing this healthy young man's illness.
249
00:17:52.319 --> 00:17:56.640
He died in September nineteen seventy one
at age thirty four. His cause
250
00:17:56.680 --> 00:18:02.759
of death was listed as pulmonary congestion, cardiovascular collapse, and renal failure.
251
00:18:03.720 --> 00:18:07.559
Judy collected twenty eight thousand dollars in
life insurance and sixty four thousand dollars in
252
00:18:07.640 --> 00:18:12.720
veterans administration benefits, which would add
up to about seven hundred thousand dollars today.
253
00:18:14.559 --> 00:18:18.599
Soon after her husband's untimely death,
Judy's house burned down. She collected
254
00:18:18.640 --> 00:18:25.200
about ninety thousand dollars or six hundred
and eighty thousand dollars today in insurance money.
255
00:18:25.680 --> 00:18:27.759
I'm a little suspicious, so she's
got some bad luck. Yeah.
256
00:18:29.720 --> 00:18:33.200
Judy packed up her three kids and
moved to Pensacola, Florida. I believe
257
00:18:33.240 --> 00:18:37.359
this was one of Judy's lies,
but she claimed that she had gone to
258
00:18:37.519 --> 00:18:42.039
nursing school on scholarship and then continued
her education and earned PhDs in biochemistry and
259
00:18:42.039 --> 00:18:47.119
psychology. Because it's not a big
deal to earn a PhD in biochemistry and
260
00:18:47.119 --> 00:18:49.000
psychology. That's easy to do.
Oh yeah, I don't know why you're
261
00:18:49.000 --> 00:18:56.359
so skeptical. Judy would later buy
a beauty salon called Fingers and Faces,
262
00:18:56.480 --> 00:19:00.480
which is one of the great worst
names I've ever heard of anything in my
263
00:19:00.599 --> 00:19:03.720
life. She also claimed that she
had been a head nurse at a West
264
00:19:03.759 --> 00:19:07.599
Florida hospital. But Judy stood about
five feet six inches tall and weigh about
265
00:19:07.599 --> 00:19:11.799
one hundred and thirty pounds, with
dark hair that she liked to keep short
266
00:19:11.599 --> 00:19:15.599
with an olive complexion. Her sharp
features and small eyes kept her from being
267
00:19:15.599 --> 00:19:19.759
described as beautiful, but her business
was beauty, and she was always impeccably
268
00:19:19.839 --> 00:19:25.759
dressed and presented herself as confident and
well put together. She spared no expense
269
00:19:26.000 --> 00:19:30.000
in keeping her appearance. Owning a
salon, she had to have the perfect
270
00:19:30.039 --> 00:19:34.720
manicure at all times. She loved
to drive her new, flashy white corvette
271
00:19:34.720 --> 00:19:40.720
around town. Judy was typically stoic
and devoid of emotion, but she could
272
00:19:40.720 --> 00:19:45.359
turn fiery at a moment's notice.
Now a word about arsenic. Arsenic is
273
00:19:45.359 --> 00:19:49.000
a natural occurring substance, but it
also can be produced in the lab.
274
00:19:49.519 --> 00:19:55.119
It is used in agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. We all have some
275
00:19:55.240 --> 00:19:59.240
level of arsenic in our bodies.
It also exists in soil and water,
276
00:19:59.440 --> 00:20:00.960
which you need to get our water
tested. Again, by the way,
277
00:20:02.480 --> 00:20:04.519
you have like a problem in our
neighborhood with arsenaly, We do have arsenic
278
00:20:04.559 --> 00:20:10.039
in our water. It is carcinogenic
and toxic at high levels. Arsenic is
279
00:20:10.160 --> 00:20:14.759
odorless and tasteless, making it the
perfect poison. Blood, fingernails, hair
280
00:20:14.839 --> 00:20:18.160
and urine can be tested to determine
the amount of arsenic in your body.
281
00:20:18.640 --> 00:20:22.880
Symptoms of arsenic poisoning include red or
swollen skin, skin changes such as new
282
00:20:22.920 --> 00:20:29.960
warts or lesions, abdominal pain,
nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, abnormal heart
283
00:20:30.039 --> 00:20:33.960
rhythm, neuropathy, muscle cramps,
white lines on your nails, and tingling
284
00:20:34.039 --> 00:20:40.680
of fingers and toes. Symptoms of
lead and mercury poisoning mirror those of arsenic
285
00:20:40.720 --> 00:20:44.039
poisoning as well. I don't know
why you're talking to me about arsenic poisoning,
286
00:20:44.799 --> 00:20:45.880
you know me. I just like
a good factoid here and there,
287
00:20:47.160 --> 00:20:51.000
you do. Michael dropped out of
high school after the tenth grade. He
288
00:20:51.119 --> 00:20:55.359
joined the Army in June of nineteen
seventy nine. After basic training, he
289
00:20:55.440 --> 00:20:59.480
visited his family in Florida for ten
days. When he returned to Fort Benning
290
00:20:59.480 --> 00:21:03.279
and Georgia to begin his job as
a water purification specialist, he began experiencing
291
00:21:03.359 --> 00:21:08.839
tingling and numbness in his extremities,
along with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
292
00:21:10.240 --> 00:21:15.000
Those symptoms sound familiar. He checked
himself into the hospital. His condition
293
00:21:15.119 --> 00:21:18.839
quickly worsened, and by January he
was largely paralyzed, unable to use his
294
00:21:18.960 --> 00:21:23.559
legs or hands, and his weight
plummeted from one hundred and sixty seven pounds
295
00:21:23.599 --> 00:21:29.200
to one hundred twenty three pounds.
In hopes of walking again, Michael moved
296
00:21:29.200 --> 00:21:33.640
to the Walter Reed Medical Center and
began physical therapy and was fitted with heavy
297
00:21:33.720 --> 00:21:38.000
leg braces and a prosthesis attached to
his right arm that was controlled by his
298
00:21:38.079 --> 00:21:42.960
still mobile left shoulder muscle. So
he could feed himself and do other basic
299
00:21:44.079 --> 00:21:48.640
tasks. So his extremities, like
the his I think you would say distal
300
00:21:48.480 --> 00:21:52.880
extremities, had no feeling, but
his upper extremities did. Interesting, So
301
00:21:52.920 --> 00:21:57.839
he could he could move and he
could kind of walk. But because of
302
00:21:57.880 --> 00:22:03.960
the braces helped him. Yeah,
but because his thigh muscle still worked.
303
00:22:03.200 --> 00:22:07.400
Does that make sense. Yeah.
A hair test revealed that the arsenic in
304
00:22:07.480 --> 00:22:12.759
Michael's body was seven times above the
normal limit. Mee's lines were present on
305
00:22:12.839 --> 00:22:18.680
his fingernails. Mee's lines are white
horizontal lines on the nail bed that can
306
00:22:18.720 --> 00:22:22.319
indicate a serious illness, such as
cancer, heart failure, or arsenic poisoning.
307
00:22:22.680 --> 00:22:26.400
And I know everyone's looking at your
fingernails right now to see white lines.
308
00:22:26.440 --> 00:22:30.680
And it doesn't mean like those little
white marks, but it's actually like
309
00:22:32.240 --> 00:22:37.079
a white line. It's like a
straight line. Yeah. Doctors were refuddled
310
00:22:37.440 --> 00:22:41.079
unable to find the cause of his
paralyzation, but thought it might be due
311
00:22:41.119 --> 00:22:47.680
to his unusual eating habits or from
his previous let exposure. During his training
312
00:22:47.720 --> 00:22:52.359
as a water purification specialist, Arsenic
was among the chemicals he frequently used.
313
00:22:52.920 --> 00:22:56.759
Michael's condition failed to improve, and
he was discharged from the hospital on May
314
00:22:56.759 --> 00:23:00.279
twelfth, nineteen eighty, into his
mother's care. She was like, I'm
315
00:23:00.279 --> 00:23:03.759
a nurse. I can take care
of him, no worries, And she
316
00:23:03.839 --> 00:23:06.599
even said to the doctors, I
have plans. I'm going to put this
317
00:23:06.680 --> 00:23:11.559
forty thousand dollars edition on the house
for Michael. You know I'm gonna I've
318
00:23:11.559 --> 00:23:15.039
got it. Don't worry about it. I'm a little dubious. Michael was
319
00:23:15.079 --> 00:23:19.960
depressed and required a full time caregiver. Doctors were hopeful his health would improve
320
00:23:21.000 --> 00:23:23.559
over time, but there was new
nerve damage, so it was kind of
321
00:23:23.640 --> 00:23:27.359
unlikely that he was ever going to
be able to walk normally again. Poor
322
00:23:27.400 --> 00:23:32.680
guy. On May thirteenth, nineteen
eighty, the day after Michael's release from
323
00:23:32.720 --> 00:23:34.640
the hospital, Judy and her two
sons set out. This is going to
324
00:23:34.720 --> 00:23:38.440
make you really mad. Judy and
her two sons set out in a sixteen
325
00:23:38.440 --> 00:23:42.480
foot canoe for a day of sun
and fishing in an attempt to improve Michael's
326
00:23:42.480 --> 00:23:47.759
mood. He was placed in a
lawn chair that was tied to the bottom
327
00:23:47.799 --> 00:23:51.839
of the canoe. Boy, can
you picture this? I can. It
328
00:23:51.880 --> 00:23:56.039
seems like a really bad idea.
So canoe is in general, are they
329
00:23:56.240 --> 00:24:00.680
mostly for two people? I think
you can have a longer canoe, but
330
00:24:00.799 --> 00:24:03.960
okay, this was a sixteen foot
canoe, which was pretty long. But
331
00:24:04.599 --> 00:24:08.079
the book that I read said it
was pretty much a two person canoe,
332
00:24:08.440 --> 00:24:11.599
but definitely not room for like a
lawn chair in the middle of it,
333
00:24:11.640 --> 00:24:15.839
which is going to make it unbalanced
too, because the lawnchair, he's going
334
00:24:15.880 --> 00:24:18.279
to be sitting up higher. And
yeah, it's a bad idea, very
335
00:24:18.279 --> 00:24:22.599
bad idea. So the lawnchair was
tied to the bottom of the canoe.
336
00:24:22.839 --> 00:24:26.759
Kim Kim is the little sister.
She's twelve, and poor Kim had to
337
00:24:26.799 --> 00:24:30.799
sit on the dock for six hours
and waited for her family to return.
338
00:24:30.160 --> 00:24:33.319
She said she was allergic to the
sun and kind of like me, and
339
00:24:33.359 --> 00:24:34.920
she was like, I don't want
to be in the boat all day,
340
00:24:36.000 --> 00:24:38.960
so she just sat on the dock
and fished and read a book or whatever.
341
00:24:41.200 --> 00:24:44.640
The day ended in tragedy when,
according to Judy, the canoe capsized
342
00:24:44.680 --> 00:24:48.039
after it hit a log in the
water. Judy and James were able to
343
00:24:48.079 --> 00:24:52.559
swim a quarter mile to safety and
were pulled aboard a nearby boat. Michael,
344
00:24:52.599 --> 00:24:56.759
who wasn't wearing a life vest,
was weighed down by his leg braces
345
00:24:56.759 --> 00:25:02.759
and arm prosthesis and drowned. All
three of them had been wearing water ski
346
00:25:02.839 --> 00:25:06.119
belts, but when Michael's body was
found, he was not wearing one.
347
00:25:06.359 --> 00:25:07.839
Do you know what a water ski
belt is? Uh? Not really,
348
00:25:07.920 --> 00:25:11.599
It's just like a life preserver,
like a narrow thing that goes around your
349
00:25:11.640 --> 00:25:15.799
waist. Okay, it doesn't reply
a little bit of buoyancy exactly, but
350
00:25:15.839 --> 00:25:18.720
it doesn't really take the place of
a life jacket. So later only two
351
00:25:18.759 --> 00:25:22.839
of those water ski belts were found
in the water. Michael was found several
352
00:25:22.880 --> 00:25:26.799
hours later, almost a mile upstream, where the water was about twelve to
353
00:25:26.839 --> 00:25:30.359
fifteen feet deep, and he was
just nineteen at the time of his death.
354
00:25:32.039 --> 00:25:34.799
Police noted on the incident report that
quote the mother was very calm,
355
00:25:34.839 --> 00:25:40.799
with no outward emotion. The report
also noted that Michael was shirtless and without
356
00:25:40.839 --> 00:25:45.000
a life vest, and he wore
shorts and heavy black orthopedic shoes with no
357
00:25:45.200 --> 00:25:52.599
socks. The report described Judy as
a clinical physician at the Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center
358
00:25:52.680 --> 00:25:57.160
at Fort Walton Beach. She was
not can you believe that? No,
359
00:25:57.440 --> 00:26:02.599
you're right, I'm angry. That's
it was just disgusting. Yeah, she
360
00:26:02.640 --> 00:26:08.079
had literally plotted her like you know, she poisoned him, She paralyzed him,
361
00:26:08.200 --> 00:26:12.680
and then she threw him over the
canoe. Yeah, that's horrible.
362
00:26:14.640 --> 00:26:25.519
We'll be back after a quick break. Okay, so we left off and
363
00:26:25.599 --> 00:26:29.720
Michael drowned. But we're going to
go back in time a little bit to
364
00:26:30.839 --> 00:26:37.839
nineteen seventy three when Judy met Bobby
Joe Morris in Pensacola. Bobby was the
365
00:26:37.880 --> 00:26:41.000
life of the party and everyone loved
him. He was Judy's best friend's boyfriend,
366
00:26:41.240 --> 00:26:45.519
but not for long. Judy and
Bobby were a good match and they
367
00:26:45.559 --> 00:26:48.599
had a lot of fun together.
He moved in with Judy and her children.
368
00:26:48.880 --> 00:26:52.920
When things started to be less fun, Bobby relocated to Colorado for a
369
00:26:52.960 --> 00:26:57.559
new job in nineteen seventy seven.
His mother said he moved to escape Judy.
370
00:26:59.480 --> 00:27:03.880
Bobby's was no fan of Judy's.
She made Bobby promise he would never
371
00:27:03.960 --> 00:27:07.240
marry her, to which she obliged. Six months later, Judy and her
372
00:27:07.319 --> 00:27:11.960
children, including Michael, joined him
in Colorado after her home in Pensacola burned
373
00:27:11.960 --> 00:27:18.160
down. Another bad stroke of election. Oh this is another house burned another
374
00:27:18.200 --> 00:27:23.559
fire. Yeah, she once again
collected insurance money. And then when she
375
00:27:23.599 --> 00:27:29.319
moved, they moved to Colorado and
she attended nursing school there and she began
376
00:27:29.480 --> 00:27:33.880
using the name missus Judy Morris,
but they weren't married. Though they weren't
377
00:27:33.920 --> 00:27:38.359
married. Just wanted to say a
quick word about Judy's kids, Like we
378
00:27:38.440 --> 00:27:42.880
know Michael was a little slow,
but the other two kids were kind of
379
00:27:42.960 --> 00:27:48.640
nightmares. Okay. James was kind
of a delinquent, like he was like
380
00:27:48.720 --> 00:27:53.160
thirteen and fourteen. He was drinking
and smoking and getting high, and Judy
381
00:27:53.279 --> 00:27:59.000
was permissive and let it happen.
Their relationship was peculiar too, because he
382
00:27:59.039 --> 00:28:02.079
would sleep in her back and when
she took a bath, he would like
383
00:28:02.680 --> 00:28:06.519
sit in the bathroom with her.
Oh that's not creepy at all. It
384
00:28:06.640 --> 00:28:11.759
was very strange. So just her
teenage kids were just very disrespectful to her,
385
00:28:12.599 --> 00:28:18.279
and James would call her a whore
and things like that. Just kind
386
00:28:18.319 --> 00:28:19.839
of a nightmare. Well, sometimes
if you're an awful parent, you're probably
387
00:28:19.839 --> 00:28:23.079
gonna have awful kids too. Well, she was very permissive, like I
388
00:28:23.079 --> 00:28:29.680
said, and she spoiled them and
bought them everything like James had a motorcycle,
389
00:28:29.960 --> 00:28:33.519
and for his fourteenth birthday, she
bought him a shotgun and then he
390
00:28:33.720 --> 00:28:40.160
saw it off the shotgun and just
it just sounds like a very crazy household.
391
00:28:40.279 --> 00:28:44.160
Yeah. Bobby was six feet three
inches tall and two hundred and twenty
392
00:28:44.200 --> 00:28:49.599
pounds and in good health despite being
a raging alcoholic. But on January fourteenth,
393
00:28:49.680 --> 00:28:53.359
nineteen seventy eight, he went to
the hospital after he became violently ill
394
00:28:53.440 --> 00:28:57.200
with what do you think, I'm
guessing he had arsenic poisoning. Well,
395
00:28:57.200 --> 00:29:03.400
he had severe nausea, vomiting,
dire and hallucinations. Bobby developed delirium delirium
396
00:29:03.440 --> 00:29:10.079
tremens while in the hospital, you
know, like the DTS, Like when
397
00:29:10.119 --> 00:29:12.319
you're an alcoholic and you stop drinking, you just go what your body goes
398
00:29:12.359 --> 00:29:19.119
into withdrawal and shock. Bobby was
also diagnosed with pancreatitis, renal failure,
399
00:29:19.599 --> 00:29:26.680
metabolic acidosis, and a kidney infection. Judy was working as a licensed practical
400
00:29:26.759 --> 00:29:30.079
nurse at the hospital where Bobby was
admitted and helped with his care while he
401
00:29:30.200 --> 00:29:33.319
was hospitalized. She would pry his
mouth open and help him drink his favorite
402
00:29:33.400 --> 00:29:38.359
drink, Hawaiian punch through a straw
by January ninth, he was in congestive
403
00:29:38.400 --> 00:29:44.799
heart failure, but his condition gradually
improved and he was eventually released on January
404
00:29:44.880 --> 00:29:48.039
twenty first. Two days later,
he returned to the hospital in severe shock,
405
00:29:48.480 --> 00:29:53.240
along with dangerously low blood pressure,
uncontrollable diarrhea, and vomiting. This
406
00:29:53.400 --> 00:29:56.440
poor guy, it just sounds like
he had every ailment that you could possibly
407
00:29:56.480 --> 00:30:00.680
have. He died on January twenty
eighth, nineteen seventy eight. His cause
408
00:30:00.720 --> 00:30:06.200
of death, according to the autopsy, was cardiac arrhythmia, with contributing factors
409
00:30:06.200 --> 00:30:11.400
such as severe sepsis, septic shock, metabolic acidosis, and pancreatitis. Judy,
410
00:30:11.480 --> 00:30:15.839
acting as Bobby's wife, tried to
have his body quickly cremated, but
411
00:30:15.920 --> 00:30:21.759
his mother intervened and had him buried
in his hometown of Bruton, Alabama.
412
00:30:22.960 --> 00:30:29.680
Judy did not attend the refuneral.
She's just horrible. Despite assuring his mother
413
00:30:29.759 --> 00:30:33.200
that he would never marry Judy or
make her the beneficiary of a life insurance
414
00:30:33.240 --> 00:30:37.400
policy, Judy cashed in Bobby's three
life insurance policies, valued at thirty thousand
415
00:30:37.480 --> 00:30:44.039
dollars one hundred and forty thousand dollars
today on his deathbat. In a state
416
00:30:44.039 --> 00:30:48.000
of delirium, Bobby Joe blurted out, quote, Judy, we should never
417
00:30:48.039 --> 00:30:52.319
have done that terrible thing. End
quote. In nineteen seventy four, the
418
00:30:52.359 --> 00:30:56.359
couple were visiting Alabama when a Florida
man was found dead in a motel.
419
00:30:56.160 --> 00:31:00.440
An anonymous call from a payphone led
police to the hotel, where the victim
420
00:31:00.519 --> 00:31:06.079
was found shot in the chest and
his throat slashed. Days after, Bobby
421
00:31:06.160 --> 00:31:10.759
Joe's mother overheard Judy telling Bobby Joe
quote, the son of a bitch shouldn't
422
00:31:10.759 --> 00:31:12.559
have come up here in the first
place. He knew if he came up
423
00:31:12.599 --> 00:31:17.640
here was going to die. End
quote. Please were never able to link
424
00:31:17.720 --> 00:31:22.200
Judy or Bobby Joe to the crime. After Bobby Joe's death, Judy changed
425
00:31:22.200 --> 00:31:26.640
her name again to Judy Bueno Anno. She changed her children's last names too.
426
00:31:27.279 --> 00:31:30.680
Do you think people were like,
why did you change your name to
427
00:31:30.200 --> 00:31:34.960
yeah Anna when it was Goodyear?
Well you even the other day you never
428
00:31:36.000 --> 00:31:38.000
had Spanish, but Spanish is kind
of like, I think everyone knows a
429
00:31:38.039 --> 00:31:42.759
little Spanish, but you even like, doesn't that mean goodyear? Yeah,
430
00:31:44.039 --> 00:31:47.880
So you kind of have the idea, like Judy's changed her name. She's
431
00:31:47.960 --> 00:31:52.440
moving. A lot of people around
her are dying regularly of mysterious causes.
432
00:31:52.640 --> 00:32:00.559
Houses are burning down. Bad luck. John Wesley Gentry the second was born
433
00:32:00.079 --> 00:32:05.119
in his family home with a midwife
by his mother's side, on June sixteenth,
434
00:32:05.200 --> 00:32:08.240
nineteen forty six, in Pensacola,
Florida. He was a fourth generation
435
00:32:08.359 --> 00:32:14.000
Pensacolon. John was the second oldest
of five boys. He became a Mormon
436
00:32:14.240 --> 00:32:16.359
when, at the age of sixteen, missionaries knocked on the door and talked
437
00:32:16.359 --> 00:32:20.480
to him into joining their church.
He said it just made sense to him.
438
00:32:20.559 --> 00:32:22.640
He'd been looking for higher meaning in
life. He was just sixteen and
439
00:32:22.720 --> 00:32:28.319
east of that. John was tall
at six feet three inches and in good
440
00:32:28.359 --> 00:32:32.799
shape. He had been an active
duty marine in Vietnam. He had seen
441
00:32:32.799 --> 00:32:37.119
some horrible things that lingered at the
margins of his consciousness. He still had
442
00:32:37.119 --> 00:32:42.039
shrapnel in his body from standing nearby
when a friend stepped on a landmine.
443
00:32:42.599 --> 00:32:46.400
His first marriage had not ended amicably. He had two sons that his ex
444
00:32:46.440 --> 00:32:52.000
wife wouldn't let him see. John
ran a successful wallpaper and carpet store.
445
00:32:52.519 --> 00:32:55.000
Judy had given him a loan to
open a second store that he had paid
446
00:32:55.039 --> 00:33:00.599
back with the insurance settlement she had
received after Bobby Joe's death. Judy had
447
00:33:00.599 --> 00:33:05.279
purchased a salon called Fingers and Faces. She loved, having perfectly quaffed hair
448
00:33:05.319 --> 00:33:08.440
and flawless nails. The salon was
doing well and Judy was finally living the
449
00:33:08.519 --> 00:33:13.960
high life she had always dreamed of. So Judy has what my mom would
450
00:33:13.960 --> 00:33:20.119
say was a beer pocket book and
champagne tas Okay, I've heard that.
451
00:33:20.799 --> 00:33:22.960
On June twenty fifth, nineteen eighty
three, John was on his way to
452
00:33:23.039 --> 00:33:29.880
a flea market to get new speakers
for his nineteen eighty one Ford Futura.
453
00:33:30.240 --> 00:33:32.960
Should I say that right? I
have no idea, but it sounds right.
454
00:33:34.799 --> 00:33:38.440
You know where what cars that I
do? Judy's son James, was
455
00:33:38.480 --> 00:33:42.839
going to help him install them later
in the day. When he returned to
456
00:33:42.880 --> 00:33:45.200
the home he shared with Judy,
Kim and James, he was surprised to
457
00:33:45.240 --> 00:33:50.640
find her there. She was normally
at work during the day. Forty year
458
00:33:50.640 --> 00:33:53.359
old Judy blurted out that she had
meant to the doctor that morning and she
459
00:33:53.480 --> 00:33:59.039
was pregnant. John was overjoyed.
He was only thirty eight and yearned for
460
00:33:59.079 --> 00:34:01.720
a second chance at being a father. They decided to go to a movie
461
00:34:01.759 --> 00:34:07.359
and lunch to celebrate. They saw
the Stephen King movie Dead Zone, which
462
00:34:07.359 --> 00:34:10.360
I've never seen. Oh really,
I love that movie. Later that night,
463
00:34:10.400 --> 00:34:15.760
they were hosting a going away party
at the upscale Driftwood restaurant for Judy's
464
00:34:15.760 --> 00:34:20.800
employee at the beauty salon. About
twenty people were expected. Judy loved the
465
00:34:20.800 --> 00:34:23.519
girls that worked at her salon.
She was very generous to them and frequently
466
00:34:23.760 --> 00:34:29.199
bought them gifts and paid them well. She asked them to call her mother.
467
00:34:30.119 --> 00:34:32.159
Judy had returned to the salon after
the movie to tie up some loose
468
00:34:32.280 --> 00:34:37.880
ends. John's job was to greet
the guests and get the party started until
469
00:34:37.960 --> 00:34:42.239
Judy arrived. She arrived at about
eight forty five pm. The party was
470
00:34:42.280 --> 00:34:45.280
a success. At about ten thirty, as the party winded down, Judy
471
00:34:45.400 --> 00:34:49.360
s John if he minded if she
and the girls went to another bar.
472
00:34:50.039 --> 00:34:52.719
He was tired from a long day
and told her to have fun and gave
473
00:34:52.760 --> 00:34:55.800
her a kiss. Judy handed John
a baggy of marijuana and asked him to
474
00:34:55.800 --> 00:35:00.440
give it to her son. When
he got home. He walked to the
475
00:35:00.519 --> 00:35:04.960
empty, darkened parking lot, found
his car cranked the engine and then turned
476
00:35:04.960 --> 00:35:08.599
the headlights on. Judy had reminded
John earlier to park in this dark,
477
00:35:08.679 --> 00:35:14.400
remote parking lot because vagrants frequented the
other parking lot closer to the restaurant.
478
00:35:15.559 --> 00:35:20.199
A deafening blast rang out into the
night. The roof of the car blew
479
00:35:20.239 --> 00:35:24.199
off, and both the front and
rear windows shattered. It happened so suddenly.
480
00:35:24.280 --> 00:35:29.719
John was unable to process the situation. Blood ran down his face in
481
00:35:29.800 --> 00:35:35.639
rivulets, and his ears rang loudly
vibrating in his head. Surprisingly, he
482
00:35:35.679 --> 00:35:39.280
was still conscious. He shakily opened
his car door and noted through the black
483
00:35:39.320 --> 00:35:44.440
smoke that his shoes were missing.
He stumbled to the sidewalk, taking a
484
00:35:44.480 --> 00:35:49.480
few disoriented steps, and crumpled to
the ground. The partygoers surrounded him as
485
00:35:49.559 --> 00:35:53.199
paramedics cut his burnt clothes from his
charred body. Judy cried out, my
486
00:35:53.360 --> 00:35:57.679
god, my god, what happened. Jackie Morgan did this? It was
487
00:35:57.800 --> 00:36:02.719
Jackie Morgan. Then she faced.
Jackie Morgan was a former business associate of
488
00:36:02.800 --> 00:36:08.599
John's Fromobile, Alabama. They had
a store called Wallpaper Mill Outlet. John
489
00:36:08.639 --> 00:36:13.480
and his brother pulled their investment out
of the Mobile store to open a new
490
00:36:13.519 --> 00:36:19.039
store in Pensacola. The mobile store
had closed and resulted in a legal battle.
491
00:36:19.840 --> 00:36:22.880
Jackie Morgan was never a serious suspect. She was angry, but not
492
00:36:23.039 --> 00:36:29.320
murderous. Judy and John, however, had mutual life insurance policies on each
493
00:36:29.360 --> 00:36:32.599
other. Of course, I'm confused. Was it a bomb? Like what
494
00:36:32.679 --> 00:36:37.320
actually happened? I wasn't sure was
it a gunshot or a bomb or what
495
00:36:37.480 --> 00:36:40.119
was it? It was an explosion? Okay, Well get just hang on
496
00:36:40.239 --> 00:36:45.719
looking into your pants, okay.
John was in rough shape. He was
497
00:36:45.800 --> 00:36:49.920
rushed by ambulance to the Sacred Heart
Hospital about ten miles away. He had
498
00:36:50.039 --> 00:36:54.880
multiple laceration mounds caused by shrapnel or
John like he needs more shrapnel in his
499
00:36:55.199 --> 00:37:00.599
body. Some pieces were as big
as seven to eight centimeters in diameter.
500
00:37:00.840 --> 00:37:04.400
They were in his skull, ears, chests, abdomen, and flanks.
501
00:37:05.039 --> 00:37:07.960
John was no stranger to shrapnel from
his time in Vietnam. His body was
502
00:37:08.039 --> 00:37:14.559
riddled with multiple fragments of foam,
rubber, plastic, and cloth. So
503
00:37:14.679 --> 00:37:17.000
the car is like it exploded,
like there's just you know, pieces everywhere.
504
00:37:17.079 --> 00:37:22.800
Yea. His colon was severed by
a metal fragment that had traveled through
505
00:37:22.840 --> 00:37:27.239
the kidney, causing damage there too. He was sent to surgery to remove
506
00:37:27.280 --> 00:37:30.599
as much of the shrapnel as possible
and to repair internal organs and staunch bleeding.
507
00:37:31.039 --> 00:37:35.559
So you probably know this, but
a lot of shrapnel just can't be
508
00:37:35.639 --> 00:37:39.599
removed from your body, which is
horrible, must be so really painful.
509
00:37:39.679 --> 00:37:43.480
Yeah, they think some of it
just kind of sits there, but it's
510
00:37:43.679 --> 00:37:47.199
just some of it such little pieces
that it just have to live with it.
511
00:37:49.199 --> 00:37:52.280
He remained in a coma for several
days, but was expected to fully
512
00:37:52.320 --> 00:37:57.119
recover. Police guarded his room,
afraid the drug dealers they suspected of bombing
513
00:37:57.199 --> 00:38:01.679
John's car would return and finish him
off. Pensacola had a relatively high crime
514
00:38:01.760 --> 00:38:06.440
rate. The Attorney General would tell
you that it was because they caught and
515
00:38:06.519 --> 00:38:12.760
prosecuted more criminals, but there were
no history of bombings, especially car bombings.
516
00:38:13.599 --> 00:38:16.119
By the way, As a side
note, Ted Bundy was apprehended in
517
00:38:16.199 --> 00:38:22.360
Pensacola in nineteen seventy six, coincidentally
the same year that the death penalty was
518
00:38:22.400 --> 00:38:30.199
reinstated. So the investigation into this
bombing found two sticks of dynamite that had
519
00:38:30.239 --> 00:38:35.559
been placed in the trunk of John's
car. And it had been wired to
520
00:38:35.599 --> 00:38:39.639
the tail lights. The wire was
orange and white. Experts later said that
521
00:38:39.719 --> 00:38:44.599
John was lucky. It was a
sloppy amateur job. If the dynamite had
522
00:38:44.599 --> 00:38:50.719
been placed under the seats, John
definitely would have died. John was recovering
523
00:38:50.719 --> 00:38:53.519
from surgery and in a coma.
He wasn't able to be interviewed for several
524
00:38:53.599 --> 00:38:59.119
days, but police were able to
interview Judy, who once again named Jackie
525
00:38:59.119 --> 00:39:01.599
Morgan as as suspe. She told
him that she was the owner of a
526
00:39:01.599 --> 00:39:07.079
successful beauty boutique for ladies in the
mall called Fingers and Faces. She said,
527
00:39:07.159 --> 00:39:10.400
quote, I have degrees as long
as my arm I make five hundred
528
00:39:10.480 --> 00:39:15.840
thousand dollars a year. On July
first, nineteen eighty three, Detective Rick
529
00:39:15.880 --> 00:39:21.039
Steel asked Judy if she would come
to the station for a light detector test.
530
00:39:21.599 --> 00:39:24.559
She agreed haltingly, but twenty minutes
later, her lawyer, who identified
531
00:39:24.599 --> 00:39:32.480
himself as Perry Mason, called the
police station and said she would not be
532
00:39:32.559 --> 00:39:37.320
taking the test. Wow, can't
believe she got Perry Mason to be your
533
00:39:37.360 --> 00:39:44.440
lawyer. Yeah. An officer recreated
the drive that John Gentry took on the
534
00:39:44.559 --> 00:39:47.599
night of the party and confirmed what
he had suspected. John had not needed
535
00:39:47.639 --> 00:39:52.960
to turn his lights on when he
drove to the party. That explained why
536
00:39:52.960 --> 00:39:57.719
his car hadn't blown up before the
party. On June twenty ninth, police
537
00:39:57.719 --> 00:40:00.840
were finally able to interview John.
He was pale and weak and had a
538
00:40:00.840 --> 00:40:05.719
hard time talking, but he was
clear that he had no idea who would
539
00:40:05.760 --> 00:40:09.119
want him dead, not even Jackie
Morgan. Police asked if he had a
540
00:40:09.159 --> 00:40:14.320
life insurance policy, and he admitted
that he and Judy both initiated a one
541
00:40:14.360 --> 00:40:19.119
hundred thousand dollar policy on each other
about six months before the bombing. John
542
00:40:19.159 --> 00:40:22.519
assumed that Judy was just covering their
assets in the event of one of their
543
00:40:22.559 --> 00:40:25.360
deaths, but he didn't know anything
about a five hundred thousand dollar policy.
544
00:40:25.840 --> 00:40:30.599
The police told him that he owned
The policy had originally been taking out taken
545
00:40:30.639 --> 00:40:35.760
out for one hundred thousand, but
Judy increased it to five hundred thousand dollars,
546
00:40:35.920 --> 00:40:39.159
valued at about one point five million
dollars today. Without John's knowledge,
547
00:40:39.800 --> 00:40:44.880
Judy had been quietly paying the two
hundred dollars a month premium on her own.
548
00:40:45.679 --> 00:40:50.599
The insurance company requested proof that their
businesses were actually worth that much money,
549
00:40:50.639 --> 00:40:55.400
and Judy provided them with the necessary
documents and the policy was activated without
550
00:40:55.559 --> 00:41:01.599
John's knowledge. As a police John
began to rethink his life with Judy.
551
00:41:02.000 --> 00:41:07.719
His foggy brain was coming alive.
He recalled vomiting uncontrollably in December of the
552
00:41:07.719 --> 00:41:15.320
previous year after she'd given him some
extra strength the vitamin C, and another
553
00:41:15.440 --> 00:41:20.800
time he vomited after she'd made him
a special salad just for him. He
554
00:41:20.880 --> 00:41:24.440
was hospitalized with dizziness, nausea,
vomiting, diarrhea, and severe stomach pains.
555
00:41:24.639 --> 00:41:29.480
Keep saying those words yeah. Doctors
never determined the cause of his illness,
556
00:41:29.519 --> 00:41:32.840
but by the time of his release
two weeks later, he was asymptomatic.
557
00:41:34.480 --> 00:41:37.760
When he returned home, Judy began
giving him the vitamin Sea pills again.
558
00:41:38.119 --> 00:41:42.960
She just really wanted him to be
healthy and vitamin C is really good
559
00:41:43.000 --> 00:41:46.280
for you. Yeah. He again
became violently ill and refused to take the
560
00:41:46.320 --> 00:41:49.719
vitamins. After that, he was
like, I'm done with you thinking.
561
00:41:50.280 --> 00:41:53.000
Judy and John's relationship had started hot
and heavy, but fizzled out quickly.
562
00:41:53.440 --> 00:41:58.280
Judy never told him she loved him. They had been engaged for two years
563
00:41:58.320 --> 00:42:01.639
and they had made no plans to
make it official. John had saved a
564
00:42:01.679 --> 00:42:07.280
couple of the orange and white so
called vitamins in his briefcase. Smart move.
565
00:42:07.400 --> 00:42:09.960
John. Police went to the wallpaper
mill outlet with a search warrant to
566
00:42:09.960 --> 00:42:15.760
seize the pills. When the pills
were analyzed at the local lab in Pensacola,
567
00:42:15.800 --> 00:42:19.239
it was obvious that the pills had
been tampered with. They were sent
568
00:42:19.280 --> 00:42:23.480
to the FBI lab and found to
be filled with arsenic and para for meldehyde.
569
00:42:24.199 --> 00:42:29.360
Para for meldehyde is a Class three
poison with no known medical use.
570
00:42:29.440 --> 00:42:35.920
In undetectable and autopsies, it slowly
shut shuts down the internal organs and eventually
571
00:42:35.960 --> 00:42:39.559
causes death. John was released from
the hospital on July fourteenth, about three
572
00:42:39.599 --> 00:42:43.960
weeks after the bombing. So that's
pretty good because he had a lot of
573
00:42:43.960 --> 00:42:45.679
injuries, so three weeks. I
would expect he would have been there longer.
574
00:42:47.159 --> 00:42:52.000
After the incident, John's panic brother, Albert, came to Judy that
575
00:42:52.079 --> 00:42:55.639
business was not going well and with
John's absence, things would only get worse.
576
00:42:57.280 --> 00:43:00.199
He asked Judy for a ten thousand
dollars loan to cover him in till
577
00:43:00.239 --> 00:43:06.280
John returned. Despite her business being
successful and the multiple insurance settlements, Judy
578
00:43:06.480 --> 00:43:09.719
was broke. She spent money as
fast as she got it. She was
579
00:43:09.760 --> 00:43:14.199
in a real pickle. She went
to the bank and mortgaged her house.
580
00:43:14.559 --> 00:43:17.480
She had paid fifty thousand dollars in
cash for her house in nineteen seventy eight.
581
00:43:19.039 --> 00:43:22.599
She took out a twenty thousand dollars
mortgage and gave ten thousand dollars to
582
00:43:22.639 --> 00:43:25.840
Albert and kept the rest for herself. She just needed a little more time
583
00:43:25.840 --> 00:43:30.320
for her plan to work. She
knew John was getting cold feet about their
584
00:43:30.360 --> 00:43:35.119
engagement. He told her he wasn't
coming back to her house to rehabilitate.
585
00:43:35.599 --> 00:43:39.519
He was going to his mother's house. Smart Judy blew up and stormed out.
586
00:43:40.519 --> 00:43:45.000
The police trailed Judy for a month, but didn't catch her doing anything
587
00:43:45.039 --> 00:43:49.840
of note. But on July twenty
seventh, nineteen eighty three, Judy was
588
00:43:49.880 --> 00:43:53.280
served with search warrants at her home
and business. Police were looking for the
589
00:43:53.360 --> 00:43:59.679
vitamin seapills and explosive materials. Judy
was at the Finger and Faces salon,
590
00:43:59.760 --> 00:44:02.760
but her kids, James seventeen and
Kim fifteen, were at home. During
591
00:44:02.800 --> 00:44:08.239
the search of their house, in
James's room, orange and white wires matching
592
00:44:08.280 --> 00:44:12.880
the wires used in the bomb and
John's car were found, along with black
593
00:44:12.920 --> 00:44:16.079
electrical tape and other tools that could
have been used in making a bomb.
594
00:44:16.639 --> 00:44:22.199
In Kimberly's room, a bottle containing
mega vitamin C, marijuana, and an
595
00:44:22.199 --> 00:44:28.880
illegal sod Off shotgun were seized.
Judy was arrested for the first degree attempted
596
00:44:28.960 --> 00:44:34.480
murder by poisoning of John Gentry.
Her friend Robert Hill posted Judy's fifty thousand
597
00:44:34.559 --> 00:44:37.800
dollars bail and she was released.
She waived her right to a speedy trial.
598
00:44:38.519 --> 00:44:45.159
Investigators couldn't figure out where Judy had
purchased the dynamite. Dynamite isn't exactly
599
00:44:45.199 --> 00:44:49.639
easy to secure for the average person. It's illegal unless you have a blaster's
600
00:44:49.679 --> 00:44:53.840
license. Police were able to trace
the purchase to an explosive dealer in Alabama.
601
00:44:54.360 --> 00:44:59.559
He confirmed the purchase of fifty six
of dynamite for seventy five dollars on
602
00:44:59.639 --> 00:45:05.800
June's seventeenth by Johnny Rawell and his
friend Rayford Odom. There were more than
603
00:45:05.840 --> 00:45:09.800
twenty phone calls between Johnny, Raoul
and Judy. Odum failed a polygraph and
604
00:45:09.840 --> 00:45:15.519
then confessed and signed a statement that
he only accompanied Raoul and didn't know what
605
00:45:15.559 --> 00:45:21.360
had happened to the dynamite. Police
discovered that Raoul had been friends with Judy's
606
00:45:21.400 --> 00:45:25.199
diste's boyfriend, Bobby Joe Morris,
So they had fifty sticks of dynamite.
607
00:45:25.280 --> 00:45:29.360
That's a lot of dynais a lot, and she used two and they only
608
00:45:29.440 --> 00:45:35.039
used two. Police interviewed Judy's employees
at Fingers and Faces. I might have
609
00:45:35.079 --> 00:45:39.679
to open a salon and still today
that's horf and learned some interesting things.
610
00:45:39.840 --> 00:45:44.920
They told police that Judy had made
plans for a world cruise for herself and
611
00:45:45.000 --> 00:45:50.760
her children without John. Judy told
several employees that John was suffering from terminal
612
00:45:50.800 --> 00:45:54.880
cancer and did not have long to
live. Police reviewed Judy's medical records and
613
00:45:55.119 --> 00:46:00.639
discovered that she'd had tubal ligation in
nineteen seventy five, making it almost impossible
614
00:46:00.840 --> 00:46:07.440
that she had ever been pregnant with
John. Stady lied yet another lie.
615
00:46:07.960 --> 00:46:13.480
With Judy safely in jail, investigators
began digging into her previous relationships and discovered
616
00:46:13.519 --> 00:46:17.320
how unlucky she had been in love. They began with Bobby jo Morris.
617
00:46:17.360 --> 00:46:22.239
His autopsy report was re examined.
The coroner had noted thorizine in his body,
618
00:46:22.360 --> 00:46:28.039
but it had never been administered to
him in the hospital. When contacted
619
00:46:28.039 --> 00:46:31.559
by police, the coroner remembered the
autopsy because he'd had to perform it after
620
00:46:31.599 --> 00:46:37.880
Bobby had been embalmed and in his
casket due to Judy trying to rush things
621
00:46:37.880 --> 00:46:42.719
along. Bobby Jo's mother had intervened
and requested the autopsy at the eleventh hour.
622
00:46:43.559 --> 00:46:47.960
However, he was not tested for
arsenic poisoning. James Goodyear's autopsy was
623
00:46:49.000 --> 00:46:54.039
also reevaluated and found that while his
symptoms were consistent with arsenic poising, his
624
00:46:54.280 --> 00:47:01.159
arsenic levels were never checked either.
Michael buenoannual those records were examined. Next.
625
00:47:01.519 --> 00:47:06.320
Was it possible that Judy was involved
in the death of two of her
626
00:47:06.360 --> 00:47:09.719
former loves and her son. No
one could believe she was that heart cold
627
00:47:09.760 --> 00:47:15.440
hearted. I can separate you,
yeah. Investigators issued warrants to exhume the
628
00:47:15.480 --> 00:47:22.000
remains of Bobby Joe Morris. Tissue
samples had been saved from James Goodyear's autopsy
629
00:47:22.039 --> 00:47:24.719
by the Navy. Police wanted to
be able to charge Judy with the first
630
00:47:24.800 --> 00:47:30.199
degree murder. All they had so
far was the attempted murder of John Gentry.
631
00:47:30.559 --> 00:47:36.440
Can you test for arsenic after like
years have passed? Yes. Forensic
632
00:47:36.480 --> 00:47:40.559
accounting of Judy's assets revealed that she
had benefited after Bobby's death to the tune
633
00:47:40.840 --> 00:47:46.239
of eighty thousand dollars three hundred and
seventy seven thousand dollars today on three life
634
00:47:46.280 --> 00:47:52.199
insurance policy she'd taken out shortly before
his death. Investigation until Michael's death included
635
00:47:52.239 --> 00:47:57.519
a statement by the intern who oversaw
his care. He was emphatic that he
636
00:47:57.599 --> 00:48:01.519
told Judy that Michael should not be
take and on a boat under any circumstances.
637
00:48:01.960 --> 00:48:05.800
There was no way that he would
be able to swim, a fact
638
00:48:05.840 --> 00:48:09.000
he had reiterated to her on three
separate occasions. I don't think you need
639
00:48:09.039 --> 00:48:14.519
to be a medical professional to tell
someone you probably shouldn't take your paralyzed son
640
00:48:15.360 --> 00:48:17.639
in a canoe on a launchair.
Yeah, especially an unstable Yeah, that's
641
00:48:19.079 --> 00:48:22.840
ridiculous. He found her to be
cold and thought it was possible that she
642
00:48:22.880 --> 00:48:27.199
saw her son as a problem and
wanted him dead. Judy described the current
643
00:48:27.280 --> 00:48:30.440
on the day of Michael's death as
very fast and hard to swim against,
644
00:48:30.480 --> 00:48:32.880
but in reality the current was slow
and it was unlikely that hitting a log
645
00:48:34.039 --> 00:48:37.679
would capsize the vessel. Michael was
a member of the army, and he
646
00:48:37.760 --> 00:48:42.599
was insured for twenty thousand dollars,
and Judy was the beneficiary. She was
647
00:48:42.679 --> 00:48:46.519
issued a check for twenty four hundred
and fifty one dollars and twenty cents including
648
00:48:46.559 --> 00:48:53.320
interest. Investigator subpoenaed bank records from
twenty four local banks to find any deposited
649
00:48:53.440 --> 00:48:59.400
checks over twenty five thousand dollars,
sure that there were multiple insurance policies on
650
00:48:59.480 --> 00:49:04.039
Michael, and likely that Judy had
opened a new bank account. Sure enough,
651
00:49:04.159 --> 00:49:07.760
they found two deposited checks, one
for forty five thousand dollars and one
652
00:49:07.800 --> 00:49:13.880
for forty thousand dollars, bringing the
total windfall from her son's death, including
653
00:49:13.880 --> 00:49:17.400
the army payout, to over one
hundred and five thousand dollars nearly four hundred
654
00:49:17.400 --> 00:49:24.119
thousand dollars today. Judy had taken
out two insurance policies on Michael. One
655
00:49:24.159 --> 00:49:30.800
policy purchase for fifteen thousand dollars had
a double indemnity clause and ended up paying
656
00:49:30.880 --> 00:49:35.519
forty five thousand dollars. Wow,
double indemnity. Do you want to say
657
00:49:35.519 --> 00:49:38.880
what that is really quick, no
idea, Oh you don't. I've never
658
00:49:38.880 --> 00:49:45.440
heard of double indemnity. So if
there's a clause in your life insurance policy
659
00:49:45.480 --> 00:49:49.400
for that, it's like if there
is an accident, you get more money,
660
00:49:49.559 --> 00:49:52.519
and if there's a double indemnity,
you get twice as much of your
661
00:49:52.519 --> 00:49:58.360
policy. Oh okay, and if
there's a single indemnity, it's just double.
662
00:49:58.480 --> 00:50:02.719
I just did our benefits enrollment,
so this is really timely. Are
663
00:50:02.760 --> 00:50:07.599
you? Oh did do how much
life insurance did you put on me?
664
00:50:07.719 --> 00:50:13.199
I didn't put any I'm worthless.
We know how that turns out. You
665
00:50:13.239 --> 00:50:19.719
know. Prosecutors knew that they had
an uphill battle in charging Judy and Michael's
666
00:50:19.760 --> 00:50:22.400
death. A grand jury convened on
January eleventh, nineteen eighty four, and
667
00:50:22.440 --> 00:50:27.400
subpoena James and Kim, escorting them
from their high school to the courthouse.
668
00:50:27.719 --> 00:50:31.400
Their testimony, in addition to the
financial records indicating insurance fraud, was enough
669
00:50:31.440 --> 00:50:36.159
for the grand jury to indict Judy
for Michael's first degree murder. Three and
670
00:50:36.199 --> 00:50:39.280
a half years after his death,
she was arrested for the second time that
671
00:50:39.440 --> 00:50:44.000
day. She was placed in the
back of a police cruiser, where her
672
00:50:44.000 --> 00:50:49.079
body began to convulse uncontrollably. Judy
was taken to the hospital and given a
673
00:50:49.119 --> 00:50:52.639
mild sedative. It was determined that
she was play acting and was taken to
674
00:50:52.679 --> 00:50:58.360
the Pensacola County Jail and booked to
be held without bond until her arraignment.
675
00:50:59.639 --> 00:51:04.719
Meanwhile, while police headed down to
Alabama to exzume Bobby Joe Morris's grave after
676
00:51:04.760 --> 00:51:07.840
his mother had given her approval.
She knew Judy had something to do with
677
00:51:07.880 --> 00:51:13.239
his death. I'm going to get
a little graphic here, so if you
678
00:51:13.559 --> 00:51:19.840
don't want to hear about exhumations,
just fast forward like two minutes. It
679
00:51:19.880 --> 00:51:22.920
had been six years since Bobby Joe
died, but his corpse was in relatively
680
00:51:22.920 --> 00:51:28.000
good condition. His face was covered
with a thick white mold, disguising his
681
00:51:28.079 --> 00:51:31.559
facial features, making him look like
melted wax. His skin was leather like
682
00:51:31.679 --> 00:51:37.360
and flesh remained on his bones.
The satin lighting of his casket was molded
683
00:51:37.400 --> 00:51:42.599
and deteriorated. The coffin was transported
to a nearby army base where the autopsy
684
00:51:42.599 --> 00:51:47.239
would be performed. The doctor took
samples of Bobby's still intact hair, fingernails,
685
00:51:47.239 --> 00:51:52.960
and removed his toenails. Tissue samples
were taken from his organs, including
686
00:51:52.960 --> 00:51:57.199
his liver, kidneys, and brain. Some of his teeth were removed as
687
00:51:57.280 --> 00:52:00.840
well to be tested for arsenic poisoning. The samples were sent to the lab.
688
00:52:01.079 --> 00:52:07.360
The results were shocking. Bobby's body
contained arsenic levels high enough to kill
689
00:52:07.480 --> 00:52:14.280
eleven men. The analysis from James
Goodyear's samples also revealed arsenic and let were
690
00:52:14.280 --> 00:52:17.480
in his tissues, enough for a
judge to order an exhumation of his body
691
00:52:17.519 --> 00:52:21.800
that had been buried for twelve and
a half years. Okay, end of
692
00:52:21.880 --> 00:52:24.440
the gross stuff. Okay. I've
always been kind of curious though, what
693
00:52:24.840 --> 00:52:28.840
you find when a corpse is exact. Yeah, it is. Yeah,
694
00:52:28.880 --> 00:52:32.440
it is interesting, and there's more
flesh on the body than you would think.
695
00:52:32.480 --> 00:52:36.079
I guess I always just pictured,
you know, like a skeleton.
696
00:52:36.199 --> 00:52:42.079
But I guess if you're in a
casket kind of delays the deterioration and embalming
697
00:52:42.199 --> 00:52:45.679
too, I would imagine, delays
things. Yeah. Gerald Dossett was a
698
00:52:45.719 --> 00:52:50.360
forty eight year old Florida man who
had dated Judy for a year in nineteen
699
00:52:50.400 --> 00:52:54.280
eighty. His brother Donald thought his
death was suspicious and asked police to investigate.
700
00:52:54.880 --> 00:53:00.159
His body was added to the list
of bodies to be exhumed. So
701
00:53:00.199 --> 00:53:06.239
I want to quickly go through Judy's
crimes and insurance settlements. The first crime
702
00:53:06.280 --> 00:53:09.360
that we know of was nineteen seventy
one when Judy poisoned her husband, James
703
00:53:09.360 --> 00:53:14.880
Goodyear after he returned from Vietnam.
I should say allegedly, but let's not
704
00:53:14.920 --> 00:53:19.840
even let's not even pretend. In
nineteen seventy four there was that murder that
705
00:53:19.880 --> 00:53:23.639
we had talked about in Alabama that
Judy was allegedly involved in. Judy and
706
00:53:23.679 --> 00:53:30.159
Bobby Joe, where he confessed on
his deathbed. In nineteen seventy eight,
707
00:53:30.360 --> 00:53:36.239
we have the poisoning of Bobby Joe
in Colorado. Nineteen eighty was the droning
708
00:53:36.360 --> 00:53:42.039
of Michael Goodyear. Nineteen eighty was
also the year that Jerry Dosette was murdered,
709
00:53:42.320 --> 00:53:45.199
or he should say he died.
We don't know if he was murdered
710
00:53:45.199 --> 00:53:49.400
and if Judy was involved or not. And nineteen eighty three is the attempted
711
00:53:49.480 --> 00:53:53.840
murder of her boyfriend James Gentry.
So the insurance settlements, I'm just going
712
00:53:53.880 --> 00:53:59.480
to give you today's money. So
James Goodyear, her husband, the only
713
00:53:59.519 --> 00:54:02.280
man that she had actually ever officially
married. She got about seven hundred thousand
714
00:54:02.320 --> 00:54:06.840
dollars from that. Then there was
the home fire, which she got about
715
00:54:06.880 --> 00:54:10.760
six hundred and eighty thousand dollars for
Michael Goodyear, her son, four hundred
716
00:54:10.800 --> 00:54:15.760
thousand dollars. There was the second
home fire. I couldn't find an amount.
717
00:54:16.039 --> 00:54:22.639
I just went with like a average
priced home. We're going to say
718
00:54:22.639 --> 00:54:27.199
it's two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Bobby Joe Morris she received four hundred
719
00:54:27.239 --> 00:54:31.440
thousand dollars. So all together she
has about two point five million dollars and
720
00:54:31.519 --> 00:54:36.559
she stood to make another one point
five million dollars if John Gentry had died.
721
00:54:36.760 --> 00:54:39.280
That's crazy. So that's an awful
lot of money. Yeah. The
722
00:54:39.320 --> 00:54:45.079
trial for the murder of Michael Goodyear
began in March nineteen eighty four in Milton,
723
00:54:45.119 --> 00:54:47.599
Florida. The courtroom was full of
people clamoring to get a glimpse of
724
00:54:47.599 --> 00:54:52.360
the woman, coined the Black Widow
by the media. It only took half
725
00:54:52.360 --> 00:54:55.159
a day for the jury to be
chosen eight men and four women. That
726
00:54:55.239 --> 00:55:00.920
judge decided to sequester them. Court
documents revealed that she Judy had quickly spent
727
00:55:00.920 --> 00:55:04.920
the money from Michael's settlement on a
new car, boat, motor home,
728
00:55:05.000 --> 00:55:09.000
furniture, and lavish trips. Judy
opened savings accounts for her other two children
729
00:55:09.039 --> 00:55:14.440
as well, James and Kim.
She had almost immediately quit her job as
730
00:55:14.440 --> 00:55:17.599
a nursing assistant that had only paid
three dollars and seventy cents an hour,
731
00:55:19.119 --> 00:55:22.679
and then she had bobbed the fingers
and faces Salon. The prosecution alleged that
732
00:55:22.719 --> 00:55:27.760
Michael was an embarrassment to Judy.
Unlike James and Kim, he was slow
733
00:55:27.880 --> 00:55:31.239
mentally, and his motor skills were
never fully developed, making him clumsy.
734
00:55:31.239 --> 00:55:37.480
He wore thick glasses, frequently misbehaved, suffered from inurysus, and a chronically
735
00:55:37.519 --> 00:55:39.840
runny nose. Judy had sent him
away from much of his childhood, allowing
736
00:55:39.920 --> 00:55:45.599
him only to visit occasionally. She
sometimes told people he was her stepson.
737
00:55:45.320 --> 00:55:49.920
The first witness to testify was Ricky
Hicks, who had been fishing nearby on
738
00:55:50.000 --> 00:55:53.000
the day of Michael's drowning when he
heard screams for help and pulled Judy and
739
00:55:53.079 --> 00:55:59.320
James to safety. He testified that
Judy didn't seem too concerned about finding Michael
740
00:55:59.519 --> 00:56:05.159
and even cracked open a bier before
the police arrived. Ricky recalled seeing sandwiches
741
00:56:05.199 --> 00:56:09.000
and other debris near the canoe,
calling into question how Michael's body had gotten
742
00:56:09.000 --> 00:56:15.639
so far downstream in the nearly currentless
water. His glasses were found about twenty
743
00:56:15.639 --> 00:56:20.320
five feet from his body. The
prosecution alleged that Judy and James had quickly
744
00:56:20.360 --> 00:56:23.480
overturned the boat when they'd heard Ricky's
boat coming, and feigned needing to be
745
00:56:23.599 --> 00:56:29.880
rescued after they dumped Michael overboard upstream, letting him drown. The debris from
746
00:56:29.920 --> 00:56:34.400
the canoe, the cooler, paddles, shoes, and sandwiches were found downstream
747
00:56:34.599 --> 00:56:37.639
near the overturned canoe. Does that
make sense It does, Yeah, it's
748
00:56:37.679 --> 00:56:43.360
really cold. The state also had
evidence that Judy had profited greatly in the
749
00:56:43.400 --> 00:56:46.239
death of both Michael and Bobby,
and both had extreme amounts of arsenic and
750
00:56:46.280 --> 00:56:51.199
their bodies of death. The problem
was that there was no direct evidence that
751
00:56:51.320 --> 00:56:55.840
Judy had possession of arsenic. One
damning witness was Kim's ex boyfriend, who
752
00:56:55.840 --> 00:57:00.079
claimed that she had told him that
Judy killed Michael for the insurance money.
753
00:57:01.119 --> 00:57:06.719
Judy told Kim that Michael was already
dying, so why not get some insurance
754
00:57:06.719 --> 00:57:12.039
money out of it. On Michael's
twenty third birthday, Friday, March thirtieth,
755
00:57:12.119 --> 00:57:15.000
nineteen eighty four, just before seven
pm, the jury began its deliberation
756
00:57:15.119 --> 00:57:20.159
on the guilt or innocence of his
mother and his cruel death. That same
757
00:57:20.280 --> 00:57:23.039
night, seventeen year old James was
arrested while drinking beers on the roof of
758
00:57:23.079 --> 00:57:29.159
his mother's beloved white corvette for the
attempted murder of John Gentry, Judy's ex
759
00:57:29.159 --> 00:57:32.400
fiance. In June nineteen eighty three. Judy was also charged. As she
760
00:57:32.440 --> 00:57:37.599
waited the verdict in her cell,
The jury worked laid into the night and
761
00:57:37.639 --> 00:57:43.079
reached a verdict as Friday turned into
Saturday. Surprisingly, court was reconvened to
762
00:57:43.119 --> 00:57:46.440
read the verdict in the early morning
hours. Judy was found guilty on both
763
00:57:46.480 --> 00:57:52.519
counts murder of her son and grand
theft due to insurance fraud. The penalty
764
00:57:52.519 --> 00:57:57.679
phase began on Monday, April second. The state fought for Judy to receive
765
00:57:57.719 --> 00:58:01.079
the death penalty. She testified on
her her own behalf, proclaiming her love
766
00:58:01.079 --> 00:58:05.960
for Michael. Publicly, she said
she actually loved him more than the other
767
00:58:06.000 --> 00:58:09.599
two. After a quick deliberation,
the jury returned a recommendation that the court
768
00:58:09.719 --> 00:58:15.000
sentenced Duty to life in prison.
The judge delayed the sentencing until June and
769
00:58:15.079 --> 00:58:20.320
remanded Judy back to custody without bond. The judge intended to go with the
770
00:58:20.400 --> 00:58:23.880
jury's recommendation. He knew that there
would be another trial and a death sentence
771
00:58:23.880 --> 00:58:29.360
would result in years, if not
decades, of appeals. Things weren't going
772
00:58:29.360 --> 00:58:34.400
well for Judy. The investigators received
a letter from the Bureau of Indian Affairs
773
00:58:34.400 --> 00:58:38.079
stating that not only was Anna lou
Welde not a relative of Geronimo, but
774
00:58:38.159 --> 00:58:45.199
the Mesquite Apache tribe she claimed to
be a descendant of never existed. In
775
00:58:45.280 --> 00:58:50.079
June, Judy was officially sentenced to
a term of twenty five years. In
776
00:58:50.199 --> 00:58:53.960
July, the body of Judy's ex
boyfriend, Gerald Dosett was exhumed and tested
777
00:58:53.960 --> 00:59:00.320
for arsenic poisoning. James's trial for
the attempted murder of John Gentry began in
778
00:59:00.360 --> 00:59:04.360
August of nineteen eighty four. The
evidence against him was sparse, but James
779
00:59:04.480 --> 00:59:08.800
was surprised when he was acquitted of
the crime. John Gentry was not surprised
780
00:59:08.840 --> 00:59:13.119
since the attempt on his life.
Things had not been going his way.
781
00:59:14.079 --> 00:59:17.800
He was forced to claim bankruptcy after
his business collapsed. He had bucket loads
782
00:59:17.800 --> 00:59:22.320
of medical debt and his body was
full of shrapnel. Despite being the victim,
783
00:59:22.360 --> 00:59:27.199
his reputation was ruined from being attached
to Judy, and he couldn't find
784
00:59:27.199 --> 00:59:30.400
a job. The marijuana police had
found on him at the time of the
785
00:59:30.440 --> 00:59:36.360
explosion made people think he was a
drug dealer. But he was happy because
786
00:59:36.400 --> 00:59:39.559
he reconnected with a former flame and
they were now married. She had a
787
00:59:39.599 --> 00:59:44.960
son, and John was overjoyed to
be a father again. At least at
788
00:59:45.039 --> 00:59:50.239
least he had love. The exhumation
of James Goodyear resulted in an additional charge
789
00:59:50.239 --> 00:59:53.199
for Judy after arsenic poisoning was discovered
to be the cause of his death.
790
00:59:53.840 --> 00:59:57.800
A bit of good news for Judy
was that she was not charged in the
791
00:59:57.800 --> 01:00:01.039
death of her ex boyfriend Gerald Dosett. No arsenic was found in his body.
792
01:00:01.599 --> 01:00:06.840
It's likely, however, that she
had poisoned him with para formaldehyde,
793
01:00:07.320 --> 01:00:10.800
which is used in the embalming process. Therefore, it would not be detectable
794
01:00:12.599 --> 01:00:19.199
as an intentional poisoning. Kind of
brilliant. Judy's second trial for the attempted
795
01:00:19.280 --> 01:00:22.800
murder of her ex fiancee, John
Gentry, began in October of nineteen eighty
796
01:00:22.800 --> 01:00:25.199
four. The trial was only a
few days long, and the jury was
797
01:00:25.280 --> 01:00:30.920
quicker this time and deliberated for less
than two hours. Judy was sentenced to
798
01:00:30.000 --> 01:00:34.639
an additional twelve years. While she
was leaving the courtroom, one of the
799
01:00:34.679 --> 01:00:39.000
detectives who had investigated her case taunted
her by waving and smiling at her.
800
01:00:39.599 --> 01:00:45.599
She lunged at him angrily and yelled, I'll see you in hell. After
801
01:00:45.639 --> 01:00:47.800
the verdict, Judy briefly talked to
the media and said, quote, I
802
01:00:47.920 --> 01:00:52.159
just don't really feel in this area
that I have gotten a fair trial in
803
01:00:52.199 --> 01:00:55.079
this case or the last case.
The last trial should have been moved to
804
01:00:55.159 --> 01:00:59.880
anywhere, but Milton, I'm certain
I won't receive a fair trial in or
805
01:00:59.840 --> 01:01:02.800
Lie, Orlando either. I don't
think I will ever get a fair trial
806
01:01:02.880 --> 01:01:07.320
because of the poblicity. End quote. She's Judy, she's the victim.
807
01:01:07.559 --> 01:01:12.039
You said she only got twelve more
years. Yeah, well it was an
808
01:01:12.039 --> 01:01:16.280
attempted murderer, Okay, all right. So Judy's third trial for the nineteen
809
01:01:16.360 --> 01:01:21.480
seventy one first degree murder of her
husband, James Goodyear, began in October
810
01:01:21.559 --> 01:01:24.920
nineteen eighty five. Two old friends
at the trial testified that Judy had offered
811
01:01:24.960 --> 01:01:30.559
to help them poison their husbands and
had even confessed to them of killing her
812
01:01:30.639 --> 01:01:36.239
husband, James Goodyear. Another shocking
testimony came from Kim, who at this
813
01:01:36.360 --> 01:01:39.119
point was eighteen years old and an
expert witness on her mother. She had
814
01:01:39.159 --> 01:01:44.239
testified at the other two trials as
well. Kim claimed that her deceased brother
815
01:01:44.360 --> 01:01:49.440
Michael, had poisoned Bobby Joe after
he had sexually abused her. The trial
816
01:01:49.480 --> 01:01:52.599
took about two weeks and rehashed all
of the unfortunate fates the men in Judy's
817
01:01:52.599 --> 01:01:58.760
past had suffered. The jury deliberated
for ten hours over two days. Judy
818
01:01:58.880 --> 01:02:02.800
was found guilty of first degree murder
because of the statute of limitations. If
819
01:02:02.840 --> 01:02:07.639
Judy had been found guilty of any
charge lesser than first degree murder, she
820
01:02:07.679 --> 01:02:12.119
would have been acquitted. Judy,
typically stoic, broke down in tears as
821
01:02:12.159 --> 01:02:15.559
the verdict was read. She was
all too aware that the maximum penalty of
822
01:02:15.599 --> 01:02:20.960
her first degree murder in Florida was
the death penalty if she somehow evaded that
823
01:02:21.039 --> 01:02:24.440
fate, Colorado would most likely extradite
her, where she would face another death
824
01:02:24.480 --> 01:02:30.880
penalty trial for the murder of Bobby
Jo Morris. Two chaplains testified that since
825
01:02:30.920 --> 01:02:35.360
the time of her incarceration, Judy
had come to them for counseling and considered
826
01:02:35.400 --> 01:02:39.079
herself a born again Christian. She
had even earned a teaching certificate and taught
827
01:02:39.079 --> 01:02:44.719
Bible studies to the other women and
croucheted blankets for sick babies. She was
828
01:02:44.760 --> 01:02:47.599
a model prisoner. It made no
difference to the jury, who voted ten
829
01:02:47.639 --> 01:02:52.400
to two for Judy to receive the
death penalty. When the judge asked her
830
01:02:52.400 --> 01:02:55.880
if she had anything to say,
Judy replied, I didn't kill anybody ever,
831
01:02:57.079 --> 01:03:00.880
Judge. It was an accident with
my son, kill my husband,
832
01:03:00.880 --> 01:03:05.079
and I didn't bomb mister Gentry's car, and that's the truth. I've never,
833
01:03:05.159 --> 01:03:08.719
to my knowledge, ever harmed anyone
meaningly. I asked the court to
834
01:03:08.719 --> 01:03:13.280
spare my life, and I will
contribute as much to the prison ministry as
835
01:03:13.280 --> 01:03:17.480
I possibly can. I just ask
you for mercy. The judge sentenced her
836
01:03:17.679 --> 01:03:22.119
to death by electric chair. There
were many appeals and three states stays of
837
01:03:22.159 --> 01:03:27.599
her execution, but Finally, on
Monday, March thirteenth, nineteen ninety eight,
838
01:03:27.679 --> 01:03:30.960
after thirteen years on death row,
fifty four year old Judy was put
839
01:03:31.039 --> 01:03:37.079
to death, born again and unafraid
to die, maintaining her innocence to her
840
01:03:37.199 --> 01:03:40.760
last breath. And that is the
end of Judy's story. But I have
841
01:03:40.760 --> 01:03:45.920
a little more for you. Jane
Champion was the first woman executed in what
842
01:03:45.960 --> 01:03:49.960
would become the United States and the
Colony of Virginia in sixteen thirty two.
843
01:03:50.679 --> 01:03:53.800
She was married to a wealthy landowner, Percival Champion, when she had a
844
01:03:53.800 --> 01:04:00.000
scandalous affair with a man named William
Gallopin. Adultery at the time was punished
845
01:04:00.400 --> 01:04:03.800
by death. Jane was accused of
concealing the birth and subsequent death of her
846
01:04:03.840 --> 01:04:08.920
baby. She and Gallopin were both
tried, convicted, and sentenced to death.
847
01:04:09.599 --> 01:04:13.679
Little is known of the crime,
and there is no evidence that Gallopin
848
01:04:13.880 --> 01:04:18.079
was executed. Judy Winoano was only
the second woman executed in Florida. The
849
01:04:18.159 --> 01:04:23.760
first was a slave woman named Cecilia, who is hanged for killing her master
850
01:04:23.960 --> 01:04:29.400
after his cruel treatment of her.
Almost done, the shortage of the drugs
851
01:04:29.480 --> 01:04:32.320
used in lethal injections has been ongoing
for years. In the US, drug
852
01:04:32.360 --> 01:04:38.440
companies have refused to stock prisons to
avoid being associated with the death penalty after
853
01:04:38.519 --> 01:04:45.480
many botched attempts of lethal injection causing
the convict extended suffering. Three drugs are
854
01:04:45.559 --> 01:04:48.960
used during lethal injection. The first
induces a coma, the second paralyzes the
855
01:04:48.960 --> 01:04:53.599
body, and the third stops the
heart. As the drugs have become harder
856
01:04:53.639 --> 01:04:58.519
to secure, death row inmates are
living longer. South Carolina, frustrated by
857
01:04:58.519 --> 01:05:03.559
the current state of executions, reintroduce
the electric chair and death by firing squad
858
01:05:03.679 --> 01:05:09.840
in twenty nineteen, but have since
added lethal injection as a means of execution.
859
01:05:11.079 --> 01:05:15.800
The average death row inmate awaits execution
for at least eighteen years. The
860
01:05:15.880 --> 01:05:20.480
longest inmate has been on death row
for over forty years. Most of these
861
01:05:20.480 --> 01:05:26.599
inmates are kept away from the general
population and are not allowed educational resources in
862
01:05:26.639 --> 01:05:31.320
other enrichment programs. And I should
mention that the chair that Judy was executed
863
01:05:31.320 --> 01:05:36.320
in malfunctioned a couple if you think
a few weeks before her death, which
864
01:05:36.440 --> 01:05:41.440
resulted in one more stay of execution. Oh boy, I know, it's
865
01:05:41.480 --> 01:05:45.559
just horrible. So that's the story
of Judy. Well, I don't want
866
01:05:45.559 --> 01:05:47.719
to say all her names again.
Yeah, I don't say all her names
867
01:05:47.719 --> 01:05:51.639
again. But yeah, horrible,
horrible, horrible person. I can't.
868
01:05:53.199 --> 01:05:58.400
Yeah, killing your son like that, just h it's horrible. I'm killing
869
01:05:58.440 --> 01:06:01.639
your son that you disabled. Yeah, I'm curious where she got the arsenic
870
01:06:01.679 --> 01:06:05.400
from. I don't know if it
could have been from. I guess even
871
01:06:05.440 --> 01:06:10.039
her first husband, she'd she'd killed
with arsenic. So I was gonna say,
872
01:06:10.079 --> 01:06:13.239
maybe it was. I think it
might be used in beauty supplies sometimes,
873
01:06:13.280 --> 01:06:16.000
but I was wondering that. Yeah. So one interesting thing was James,
874
01:06:16.119 --> 01:06:20.840
Judy's son, was roommates with David
Lackey. David Lackie is Kim's ex
875
01:06:20.880 --> 01:06:26.840
boyfriend who had testified Judy against Judy
at the first trial. James came home
876
01:06:26.880 --> 01:06:30.960
from work one afternoon and discovered that
David was dad from a self inflicted gunshot
877
01:06:30.960 --> 01:06:36.519
wound. The weapon that he'd used
was James's gun. James had a solid
878
01:06:36.719 --> 01:06:43.000
alibi and there was a suicide note, but police had their suspicions, although
879
01:06:43.079 --> 01:06:47.159
James was never charged. Interesting,
it's just a crazy story. Yeah,
880
01:06:47.199 --> 01:06:49.840
do you know what happened to the
kids who I don't know. I tried.
881
01:06:50.320 --> 01:06:59.199
I know that at least Kim was
married and has children. That I
882
01:06:59.360 --> 01:07:02.480
look, I could not find anything. The main source I used for the
883
01:07:02.519 --> 01:07:10.440
case is a book called Bodies of
Evidence by Chris Anderson and Sharon McGee.
884
01:07:11.800 --> 01:07:17.760
It was I don't know if it
was because it was poorly transcribed to Kindle,
885
01:07:18.360 --> 01:07:25.039
but it had literally hundreds of mistakes. Oh really, yeah, it
886
01:07:25.159 --> 01:07:30.519
was really and I found a couple
of like factual things that I thought might
887
01:07:30.559 --> 01:07:36.039
be wrong, but there were points
of it that was really brilliantly written.
888
01:07:36.639 --> 01:07:42.760
There are a lot of mistakes in
the book. And also I watched very
889
01:07:42.840 --> 01:07:47.920
Scary People The Black Widow season five, episodes nine and ten. They're seeing
890
01:07:48.119 --> 01:07:55.400
very scary people. Well, yeah, I did a mini rant here,
891
01:07:55.480 --> 01:07:59.639
like every time we've watched a true
crime show lately, like so much of
892
01:07:59.639 --> 01:08:03.119
it is like the first ten minutes
they're going to tell you, show you
893
01:08:03.559 --> 01:08:06.960
everything about the case, thing about
the case, and then it's it's just
894
01:08:09.079 --> 01:08:12.599
there was a lot of material that
was rehashed over and over and it was
895
01:08:12.679 --> 01:08:15.359
just really frustrating. It probably could
have been twenty minutes, but yeah,
896
01:08:15.399 --> 01:08:23.359
it was. So it was frustrating
and I don't really recommend it, except
897
01:08:23.399 --> 01:08:27.199
for and I didn't have any clips
in this episode. They did have Judy's
898
01:08:27.239 --> 01:08:29.520
voice, and I always love to
hear it is inter Yeah, it was
899
01:08:29.560 --> 01:08:31.880
always good to hear the people's voices. She actually has a pretty nice voice.
900
01:08:33.239 --> 01:08:38.319
Well, nice job telling the story
as always a terrible story, terrible
901
01:08:38.319 --> 01:08:42.199
person though as usual. Yeah,
I don't feel too bad that she is
902
01:08:42.239 --> 01:08:45.159
no longer with us. Same before
we go, do you want to tell
903
01:08:45.159 --> 01:08:51.079
our listener friends about the new friend
and our family, the one that's been
904
01:08:51.079 --> 01:08:56.079
hanging around here for the last month
at our house and popping up in strange
905
01:08:56.119 --> 01:09:01.359
places. Yeah. So I saw
something about instead of doing Elf on the
906
01:09:01.399 --> 01:09:09.359
shelf for Christmas, you do doll
in the hall for Halloween. Yeah,
907
01:09:09.399 --> 01:09:15.039
and I actually purchased I'm very scary
looking doll, very sweet looking young doll.
908
01:09:16.479 --> 01:09:19.079
I posted about it on Instagram,
so if you follow us on Instagram,
909
01:09:19.079 --> 01:09:21.640
you saw me post a couple of
times about it. But we actually
910
01:09:21.720 --> 01:09:25.640
hit her several times around the house
just to scare each other, and that
911
01:09:25.720 --> 01:09:29.000
was pretty fun. Yeah. The
first time you did it definitely scared me.
912
01:09:29.199 --> 01:09:31.279
And then I put it. I
thought I was very creative. I
913
01:09:31.319 --> 01:09:33.439
put it in our pantry, but
I hung it up so it was like
914
01:09:33.479 --> 01:09:36.279
eye level. So as soon as
you open the pantry door, she was
915
01:09:36.399 --> 01:09:40.920
right there looking out of the pantry
door. And I don't think I think
916
01:09:40.920 --> 01:09:45.279
I was rather nonplussed. Yeah.
Yeah, our daughter, on the other
917
01:09:45.319 --> 01:09:51.479
hand, she was evil, evil, evil evil. I wanted to send
918
01:09:51.479 --> 01:09:55.199
our love to our friend Deanna,
who is going through some hard things right
919
01:09:55.239 --> 01:09:58.159
now. Deanna, we are thinking
of you and rooting for you, and
920
01:09:58.199 --> 01:10:01.319
we love you always. Thank you
for listening. Please rate, review,
921
01:10:01.439 --> 01:10:05.439
follow, and subscribe, and thank
you so much if you have taken the
922
01:10:05.479 --> 01:10:10.520
time to leave a review. Looking
at the reviews is always a little scary,
923
01:10:10.520 --> 01:10:14.119
but you guys are so abundantly kind
and generous, and we just appreciate
924
01:10:14.119 --> 01:10:15.920
it. Yeah, we really do
appreciate it. And if you want to
925
01:10:15.920 --> 01:10:20.439
support the podcast, if you want
to consider following us on patreon dot com,
926
01:10:20.479 --> 01:10:25.640
slash Love Mary Kill five dollars a
month. We keep it nice and
927
01:10:25.680 --> 01:10:30.399
simple. One extra episode a month, no ads, early access, and
928
01:10:31.439 --> 01:10:35.279
yeah that's about it. Yeah.
So you and I yesterday went to the
929
01:10:35.920 --> 01:10:41.000
underground printing store and that was an
exciting trip. Yeah, we talked about
930
01:10:41.319 --> 01:10:45.079
merch even threatening to do merch for
a long time, but we haven't done
931
01:10:45.079 --> 01:10:48.720
it because I wanted to actually see
the things in person. Yeah, and
932
01:10:48.800 --> 01:10:53.000
we want to keep it again as
nice and simple as we can, because
933
01:10:53.039 --> 01:10:56.760
we're not sure how many people are
even interested. And please if you don't
934
01:10:56.800 --> 01:11:00.800
feel obligated in any way ever,
we are going to do a merch drop
935
01:11:00.880 --> 01:11:04.000
in probably a week, probably going
to do it in a week. Yeah,
936
01:11:04.039 --> 01:11:05.760
and we're gonna, like I said, we're going to keep it simple.
937
01:11:05.800 --> 01:11:09.600
We're just going to do hoodies and
crew necks, a T shirt and
938
01:11:09.640 --> 01:11:12.159
I may be a long sleeve tea
and I think that was it for now.
939
01:11:12.239 --> 01:11:15.159
We'll see how it goes, but
I promise you that it's good stuff.
940
01:11:15.399 --> 01:11:21.720
And I recently purchased a hoodie from
someone that was horrible and the graphic
941
01:11:21.880 --> 01:11:27.239
was horrible, and we wanted to
go with someone that we knew, someone
942
01:11:27.319 --> 01:11:30.800
that we could see and feel the
fabrics, and I promise you that they're
943
01:11:30.840 --> 01:11:31.800
they're nice. Yeah. If we're
going to do it, we want to
944
01:11:31.800 --> 01:11:35.399
make sure it's quality. So yeah, we'll talk more about that on our
945
01:11:35.439 --> 01:11:39.600
next episode. Yeah. And our
goal is not to make money on it.
946
01:11:39.600 --> 01:11:44.920
Our goal is just to have some
merch for us to wear, and
947
01:11:45.000 --> 01:11:48.399
what better Christmas gift than to give
it long Mary kill sweatshirts? Right,
948
01:11:48.960 --> 01:11:53.520
well, I think we've kept you
long enough until next time. Don't kill
949
01:11:53.560 --> 01:12:43.600
your husband, and don't kill your
wife. Top ten ten black widows.
950
01:12:44.000 --> 01:12:53.880
Speaking of black widows, black widows
are spiders. Could go back to where
951
01:12:53.920 --> 01:12:54.920
I see black widows.
