Chris Benoit known as the Canadian Crippler or the Rabid Wolverine was a WWE star in the 22nd year of a storied career. He was known to be a wrestler’s wrestler- one of the most technically proficient athletes among the corps of actors and performers. Chris Jericho once said Chris Benoit was the “most intense and believable performer I’ve ever been in the ring with. He could see things that were going to happen before they happened.” Chris won many heavyweight and tag team championships, and he’d made a lot of money doing it. He was doing exactly what he’d wanted to do for his entire life- since he was 3-years-old. His friends and colleagues all knew him to be a respectful, reserved and polite family man. So, it came as quite a shock to everybody when he and his family were found dead under suspicious circumstances, in their sprawling Fayetteville, Georgia home. This is the story of a woman, her child, and to some extent, a man, who were failed by the very institution that should have protected them.The question on everyone’s mind…could the tragedy have been prevented?

1
00:00:00.320 --> 00:00:02.439
Hi, I'm Tina, and I'm rich And if there's one

2
00:00:02.439 --> 00:00:05.040
thing we've learned and over twenty years of marriage, it's.

3
00:00:04.879 --> 00:00:07.240
That some days you'll feel like killing your wife.

4
00:00:06.960 --> 00:00:09.279
And some days you'll feel like killing your husband.

5
00:00:09.560 --> 00:00:11.519
Welcome to love, Mary Kill.

6
00:00:26.079 --> 00:00:27.239
Good afternoon, Richard.

7
00:00:27.519 --> 00:00:28.600
Good afternoon, Tina.

8
00:00:28.679 --> 00:00:29.160
How are you.

9
00:00:29.399 --> 00:00:30.960
I'm doing good? How are you good?

10
00:00:31.000 --> 00:00:33.679
We're finally getting some snow out there, yeah, but not

11
00:00:33.719 --> 00:00:37.479
really well with like a winter weather advisory, we're supposed

12
00:00:37.479 --> 00:00:39.000
to get like between two and four inches.

13
00:00:39.039 --> 00:00:40.759
But I know I have a bad feeling we are

14
00:00:40.799 --> 00:00:41.920
gonna be disappointed.

15
00:00:42.119 --> 00:00:44.679
Which it's funny that you're saying bad feeling because usually

16
00:00:44.719 --> 00:00:46.159
by this time at winter you're kind.

17
00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:48.119
Of like over it. I know, but I would like

18
00:00:48.159 --> 00:00:49.880
at least one good snowfall.

19
00:00:50.039 --> 00:00:54.320
And if we've had snow, but you haven't, we haven't

20
00:00:54.359 --> 00:00:55.119
had to shovel yet.

21
00:00:55.200 --> 00:00:58.799
No, that's how I count snowfalls as shoveling, Like how

22
00:00:58.799 --> 00:00:59.960
many times do you have to shovel?

23
00:01:00.079 --> 00:01:00.200
Right?

24
00:01:00.359 --> 00:01:01.960
Sure, so far zero, which.

25
00:01:01.840 --> 00:01:06.040
Is rare, and last winter it was only a couple

26
00:01:06.159 --> 00:01:07.120
Right now, you could.

27
00:01:06.959 --> 00:01:09.599
Count it on one hand. I have to ask why

28
00:01:09.640 --> 00:01:12.040
you called me Richard at the beginning, because usually when

29
00:01:12.079 --> 00:01:13.840
you call me Richard, I feel like I'm in trouble

30
00:01:13.920 --> 00:01:14.439
for something.

31
00:01:14.760 --> 00:01:19.359
That's your name. Oh okay, I like to I was

32
00:01:19.400 --> 00:01:21.920
going to call you Dick. It was like, I better not,

33
00:01:22.239 --> 00:01:26.280
because no, I don't. I believe no one with the

34
00:01:26.319 --> 00:01:28.959
name Richard goes by Dick anymore. I'm I could be wrong.

35
00:01:29.079 --> 00:01:31.560
I think you're correct. I think I've mentioned it before,

36
00:01:31.599 --> 00:01:34.200
but I was named after my uncle who went by Dick.

37
00:01:34.680 --> 00:01:36.719
And I was just looking the other day. Dick's sporting

38
00:01:36.760 --> 00:01:39.280
goods is out there, so I'm surprised there's not. I

39
00:01:39.319 --> 00:01:42.200
don't know. It's not making a comeback the name Dick.

40
00:01:42.640 --> 00:01:45.200
I think there's a reason it's not making it come back.

41
00:01:45.560 --> 00:01:47.000
All right, Maybe I'm not surprised.

42
00:01:47.799 --> 00:01:50.599
You do an excellent job of matching the snack with

43
00:01:50.640 --> 00:01:55.000
the episode, and I'm a little more lackadaisical about that,

44
00:01:55.439 --> 00:01:58.239
but not today. But today, I was just going to

45
00:01:58.280 --> 00:02:02.640
bring you some anabolic steeroids, because but what are wrestlers

46
00:02:02.680 --> 00:02:03.239
they eat?

47
00:02:03.519 --> 00:02:06.799
After part one? My impression is that it's bad, So

48
00:02:06.879 --> 00:02:08.919
I don't know if I want those. I don't think

49
00:02:08.960 --> 00:02:09.120
I do.

50
00:02:09.639 --> 00:02:12.280
So that was a really bad joke I did bring you.

51
00:02:12.639 --> 00:02:15.960
It's not a snack as much as a drink. Okay,

52
00:02:16.159 --> 00:02:17.039
do you know what it is?

53
00:02:17.199 --> 00:02:19.759
I heard the blender going. But yeah, so.

54
00:02:19.680 --> 00:02:23.479
When I wasn't feeling well, there's no alcohol. But you

55
00:02:23.479 --> 00:02:25.360
know what, I bet you could really put some alcohol

56
00:02:25.360 --> 00:02:27.280
in this when I wasn't feeling well. When I'm not

57
00:02:27.319 --> 00:02:30.439
feeling well, I want oranges, Like I eat a lot

58
00:02:30.479 --> 00:02:33.080
of oranges and clementines and things like that, and I

59
00:02:33.120 --> 00:02:34.919
don't know, I think they make me feel better. But

60
00:02:35.319 --> 00:02:37.919
I asked for an orange julius and you made me

61
00:02:37.960 --> 00:02:41.479
an orange julius. So I'm still not feeling amazing and

62
00:02:43.360 --> 00:02:45.400
to day, so, yeah, I made you an orange good

63
00:02:45.759 --> 00:02:48.120
that sounds really good. It's a different recipe than you

64
00:02:48.199 --> 00:02:50.680
tried before, and you made me, so you want to

65
00:02:50.680 --> 00:02:51.199
give it a try?

66
00:02:51.360 --> 00:02:51.840
Of course?

67
00:02:58.039 --> 00:02:59.439
What do you think of the orange julius?

68
00:02:59.759 --> 00:03:02.080
I think it's really good. It's just really like foamy

69
00:03:02.319 --> 00:03:04.120
and yeah, very tasty.

70
00:03:04.520 --> 00:03:06.879
How does this compare to the other recipe that you made?

71
00:03:06.919 --> 00:03:07.639
I think it's better.

72
00:03:08.240 --> 00:03:11.360
The recipe that you made used a whole can of

73
00:03:11.520 --> 00:03:14.280
orange juice consentra. I think I don't want to gross

74
00:03:14.319 --> 00:03:16.840
you out, but this recipe was two cups orange juice,

75
00:03:17.199 --> 00:03:22.719
one half cup heavy cream, two large pasteurized egg yolks, oh,

76
00:03:22.759 --> 00:03:26.120
a quarter cup of powdered sugar, one teaspoon pure vanilla,

77
00:03:26.280 --> 00:03:30.800
and a cup of ice. So those egg yolks. If

78
00:03:30.840 --> 00:03:33.000
I would have told you that beforehand, I'm not sure

79
00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:33.520
if you would have.

80
00:03:33.759 --> 00:03:36.240
Yeah, I mean, I know they use egg yolks and

81
00:03:36.280 --> 00:03:38.400
things like that, so it it doesn't gross me out

82
00:03:38.400 --> 00:03:40.039
too much. But no, I think it's really tasty.

83
00:03:40.439 --> 00:03:42.560
Actually, you know, I put a little more sugar in it,

84
00:03:43.039 --> 00:03:46.039
and I also did use probably about a quarter cup

85
00:03:46.120 --> 00:03:48.639
of orange juice concentrate because I didn't think it had

86
00:03:49.039 --> 00:03:52.280
a bunch of orange, like a good enough orange taste

87
00:03:52.280 --> 00:03:52.560
to it.

88
00:03:52.680 --> 00:03:57.840
Yeah, very good. Nine out of ten. Oh, I know

89
00:03:57.960 --> 00:04:01.240
that's such a bad rating. You told me last time

90
00:04:01.599 --> 00:04:02.800
I'm too easy, so I'm.

91
00:04:02.719 --> 00:04:06.280
Trying to feel a little I didn't mean, now you

92
00:04:06.319 --> 00:04:07.719
know what, I think. I'd give it a nine out

93
00:04:07.759 --> 00:04:10.439
of ten two excellent. Think you nailed it all right.

94
00:04:10.479 --> 00:04:12.159
Do you want to talk about Chris Benoit?

95
00:04:13.039 --> 00:04:14.759
I would love to, But before I do that, if

96
00:04:14.800 --> 00:04:16.839
you haven't listened to part one, you should go back

97
00:04:16.879 --> 00:04:21.199
and do that. WWE wrestler Chris Benoi, his wife Nancy,

98
00:04:21.399 --> 00:04:23.920
and their young son were found dead in their Georgia

99
00:04:23.959 --> 00:04:27.360
home on June twenty fifth, two thousand and seven, after

100
00:04:27.439 --> 00:04:32.160
Chris missed several wrestling shows. Wrestling consumed Chris's life, and

101
00:04:32.199 --> 00:04:34.600
he was deeply affected by the recent death of his

102
00:04:34.680 --> 00:04:39.279
best friend, fellow wrestler Eddie Guerrero. Chris's heavy steroid use

103
00:04:39.319 --> 00:04:43.279
and abusive behavior had previously prompted Nancy to file for divorce,

104
00:04:43.720 --> 00:04:46.879
though they later reconciled. In the weeks leading up to

105
00:04:46.920 --> 00:04:50.160
his death, Chris exhibited growing paranoia and depression.

106
00:04:51.120 --> 00:04:55.240
After Eddie Guerrero's death, the WWE, in an attempt to

107
00:04:55.279 --> 00:04:59.879
clean up their image, instituted the Wellness Program. The WWE

108
00:05:00.079 --> 00:05:02.279
claimed they were going to crack down on drug use,

109
00:05:02.680 --> 00:05:07.079
institute organization wide drug test, and screen talent for developing

110
00:05:07.160 --> 00:05:11.759
cardiac issues. But they were instituting this wellness program without

111
00:05:11.800 --> 00:05:17.240
really analyzing why are our athletes abusing? Yeah, drug and steroids?

112
00:05:17.319 --> 00:05:20.199
No one looking at the root cause, Yeah, No drugs

113
00:05:20.240 --> 00:05:23.680
without a prescription were allowed, not even an aspirin. As

114
00:05:23.720 --> 00:05:27.800
will become clear, this was only another extension of k fabe.

115
00:05:28.199 --> 00:05:31.399
The wellness checks were just for show. Even chrispin Waugh

116
00:05:31.439 --> 00:05:35.079
passed the test. Days before his death. The WWE, like

117
00:05:35.160 --> 00:05:38.399
any other business put in charge of regulating itself, had

118
00:05:38.439 --> 00:05:41.920
no interest in changing anything they didn't have to, especially

119
00:05:41.959 --> 00:05:44.600
if it was going to cost them time or money.

120
00:05:45.399 --> 00:05:49.519
Memorial benefit shows became a staple of WWE programming. As

121
00:05:49.600 --> 00:05:53.040
Chris's colleagues and friends all started dying left and right.

122
00:05:53.759 --> 00:05:57.000
Eddie was only one of many. In nineteen ninety nine,

123
00:05:57.199 --> 00:06:00.759
Owen Hart, brother of Rickhart and member of the Heart Dynasty.

124
00:06:00.800 --> 00:06:02.720
Remember we talked about the Heart Dynasty in the last

125
00:06:02.720 --> 00:06:08.240
episode and how Stuhart had trained so many dungeons. Yes,

126
00:06:08.279 --> 00:06:11.920
and his dungeon. Owen Hart, was tragically killed in an

127
00:06:11.920 --> 00:06:15.600
accident during a live taping. Heart was to be repelled

128
00:06:15.600 --> 00:06:18.720
into the ring from the catwalk when his harness broke,

129
00:06:19.519 --> 00:06:23.319
Vince made the decision to let the show continue. He

130
00:06:23.439 --> 00:06:26.720
rationalized this action by saying that the audience never saw

131
00:06:26.759 --> 00:06:32.480
what happened because the stadium had gone into darkness. Owen's

132
00:06:32.480 --> 00:06:35.839
blood remained in the ring while his devastated friends continued

133
00:06:35.879 --> 00:06:39.160
the show. His wife settled a lawsuit with the WWE

134
00:06:39.199 --> 00:06:43.319
for his wrongful death. Shinya Hashimoto, who Chris wrestled with

135
00:06:43.480 --> 00:06:46.800
in New Japan pro Wrestling died of a brain hemorrhage

136
00:06:47.000 --> 00:06:50.319
caused by high blood pressure on July eleventh, two thousand

137
00:06:50.319 --> 00:06:53.800
and five. He was only forty years old. Victor black

138
00:06:53.920 --> 00:06:56.720
Cat Mar, who trained Chris and the Dojo, died of

139
00:06:56.759 --> 00:06:59.759
a heart attack on June twenty eighth, two thousand and six.

140
00:07:00.199 --> 00:07:04.279
He was fifty one. Allan Bad News Coash, a colleague

141
00:07:04.279 --> 00:07:07.439
from Stampede, died of a heart attack on March twenty six,

142
00:07:07.519 --> 00:07:11.160
two thousand and seven. He was sixty three. Michael Lin Durham,

143
00:07:11.160 --> 00:07:13.959
better known as Johnny Grunge, was the straw that broke

144
00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:17.680
the Camel's back. Grunge was the Benois neighbor and had

145
00:07:17.720 --> 00:07:20.959
helped Chris process the grief that stemmed from Eddie's death.

146
00:07:21.480 --> 00:07:23.560
He was also the friend Chris turned to when he

147
00:07:23.600 --> 00:07:27.120
and Nancy fought. He was found out on February sixteenth,

148
00:07:27.160 --> 00:07:31.000
two thousand and six, having suffered a coronary artery blockage.

149
00:07:31.399 --> 00:07:32.519
He was forty years old.

150
00:07:32.639 --> 00:07:33.560
Oh my goodness.

151
00:07:33.759 --> 00:07:37.120
Eventually, Chris had attended so many w w E memorials

152
00:07:37.120 --> 00:07:39.920
that he decided to swear off of them. He could

153
00:07:39.959 --> 00:07:42.519
no longer muster the real misery he had to endure

154
00:07:42.600 --> 00:07:45.360
for the cameras it was too hard. Chris did his

155
00:07:45.439 --> 00:07:48.079
best to keep the feelings at bay. He was a

156
00:07:48.079 --> 00:07:51.519
practitioner of the old school of masculinity. Just ignore the

157
00:07:51.519 --> 00:07:54.399
feelings and they'd go away. Don't talk about them, don't

158
00:07:54.399 --> 00:07:57.759
ever be vulnerable with anybody. The feelings did come out,

159
00:07:57.800 --> 00:08:01.199
of course, but in more subconscious ways. He behaved even

160
00:08:01.240 --> 00:08:04.480
more recklessly than usual. He dove off of the top

161
00:08:04.560 --> 00:08:08.240
rope to perform the diving headbut even after he'd already

162
00:08:08.279 --> 00:08:11.360
broken his neck once doing it, he took an absurd

163
00:08:11.399 --> 00:08:13.680
amount of chair shots in the back of the head,

164
00:08:14.160 --> 00:08:18.759
which is something most professional wrestlers do not do. Whether

165
00:08:18.759 --> 00:08:22.079
it was steroids or CTE, or grief, or a combination

166
00:08:22.199 --> 00:08:24.879
of all of the above, Ben Whi's behavior at home

167
00:08:24.920 --> 00:08:29.040
became even more erratic. He was often distant, both physically

168
00:08:29.079 --> 00:08:33.519
and emotionally. Daniel only seven, often dialed his absent father.

169
00:08:33.919 --> 00:08:37.120
He couldn't understand why Chris never answered. It's hard to

170
00:08:37.159 --> 00:08:40.559
know the exact reason behind Chris's self isolation, but it's

171
00:08:40.679 --> 00:08:43.720
likely that he understood something was going wrong in his head,

172
00:08:44.240 --> 00:08:46.279
and he may have been frightened of what he'd do

173
00:08:46.399 --> 00:08:48.799
to his family if he were near them.

174
00:08:48.960 --> 00:08:51.039
I feel so sad for Daniel, not just because of

175
00:08:51.080 --> 00:08:53.200
what is going to happen that we're going to talk about,

176
00:08:53.240 --> 00:08:56.120
but just he obviously idolized his dad so much, and

177
00:08:56.240 --> 00:08:58.720
just in this at this point in time, he must

178
00:08:58.759 --> 00:09:02.960
have felt confused and sad that his dad was, you know,

179
00:09:03.600 --> 00:09:06.159
not spending time with him or right.

180
00:09:06.240 --> 00:09:08.360
I think they did go to some of his matches,

181
00:09:08.360 --> 00:09:10.840
so maybe he saw them more than we think that

182
00:09:10.879 --> 00:09:14.279
he saw them. Text messages between Chris and Nancy from

183
00:09:14.399 --> 00:09:16.480
May two thousand and seven are telling of the state

184
00:09:16.519 --> 00:09:19.799
of their marriage. Here are some snippets which give a

185
00:09:19.799 --> 00:09:23.399
good sense of how the relationship had dissolved. May fifth,

186
00:09:23.639 --> 00:09:27.200
Daniel has called twice today. You can't bother with him either.

187
00:09:28.039 --> 00:09:30.799
May ninth. Get off the crap you're on. It's making

188
00:09:30.799 --> 00:09:34.679
you passive aggressive, and I don't need the abuse. May tenth,

189
00:09:35.120 --> 00:09:38.639
you are a grown man with three kids. Set the example.

190
00:09:39.000 --> 00:09:41.240
Are you typing to say that is how you grew

191
00:09:41.320 --> 00:09:44.000
up watching your dad call your mom name and make

192
00:09:44.039 --> 00:09:47.399
her cry? No, then what gives you the right grow up?

193
00:09:47.399 --> 00:09:51.240
For mighty sakes, get off the stuff. It's obvious. I'm

194
00:09:51.279 --> 00:09:54.120
probably not the only one who can see and we

195
00:09:54.279 --> 00:09:57.639
both know the wellness program is a joke. On May

196
00:09:57.679 --> 00:10:00.559
twenty six, Nancy texted Chris about his two hundred and

197
00:10:00.600 --> 00:10:03.919
fifty thousand dollars life insurance policy. She was angry that

198
00:10:03.960 --> 00:10:07.480
he would refuse to make her the beneficiary. Quote, if

199
00:10:07.559 --> 00:10:09.960
you wanted your ex wife to have your retirement fund,

200
00:10:10.240 --> 00:10:12.080
you would have given it to her years ago with

201
00:10:12.159 --> 00:10:14.480
the divorce. If you wanted her to have more, you

202
00:10:14.519 --> 00:10:17.720
wouldn't have tried to hide your money. Now it's at

203
00:10:17.759 --> 00:10:21.000
the point where we are married. I come first.

204
00:10:21.200 --> 00:10:23.240
Do you know if he left his ex wife just

205
00:10:23.279 --> 00:10:25.399
because he didn't get around to changing it, or was

206
00:10:25.440 --> 00:10:28.519
there a reason why his ex wife was the beneficiary.

207
00:10:29.320 --> 00:10:31.120
Well, he had two kids with her. I'm not sure

208
00:10:31.120 --> 00:10:33.480
if that's why. I don't know if he intended to

209
00:10:33.519 --> 00:10:37.440
get another policy. Chris made between depending on the year,

210
00:10:37.480 --> 00:10:42.720
between four hundred thousand and a million dollars a year. Anytime,

211
00:10:42.840 --> 00:10:45.039
you know, any of his merchandise sold, he got kickbacks

212
00:10:45.039 --> 00:10:48.039
from that, so he was making good money. So the

213
00:10:48.080 --> 00:10:50.480
two hundred and fifty thousand dollars were you know, it's

214
00:10:51.080 --> 00:10:53.440
it's a lot of money, but you know, for Chris,

215
00:10:53.440 --> 00:10:56.159
I'm not sure if maybe that's why he didn't change

216
00:10:56.200 --> 00:10:58.039
it because, I mean he made more than in a year.

217
00:10:58.120 --> 00:11:00.679
Yeah, that wouldn't replace a whole lot of his income.

218
00:11:00.879 --> 00:11:01.159
Yeah.

219
00:11:01.919 --> 00:11:04.399
Nancy tried her best to hold it together, but Chris's

220
00:11:04.399 --> 00:11:07.480
behavior began to take a toll on her Psyche. He

221
00:11:07.559 --> 00:11:10.440
became controlling when he was actually around. He would throw

222
00:11:10.519 --> 00:11:12.639
fits if she didn't cook him exactly what he wanted

223
00:11:12.639 --> 00:11:15.200
to eat. He would hide her car so she couldn't

224
00:11:15.240 --> 00:11:18.360
leave the house. Nancy confided in her neighbor Holly, that

225
00:11:18.600 --> 00:11:22.279
she'd been hitting the bottle pretty hard too, and occasionally

226
00:11:22.320 --> 00:11:25.600
even took some of Chris's pain pills, and every effort

227
00:11:25.679 --> 00:11:29.120
she'd made to moderate Chris only pushed him further away.

228
00:11:29.799 --> 00:11:32.480
In late January two thousand and seven, unsure of what

229
00:11:32.519 --> 00:11:35.759
else to do, she threw Chris's stash of steroids away.

230
00:11:36.080 --> 00:11:38.039
When he found out, he was so angry that he

231
00:11:38.039 --> 00:11:41.919
didn't come home for two weeks, and more people began

232
00:11:41.960 --> 00:11:46.360
to notice Chris's paranoia. His driver, Jimmy Bassball, has spoken

233
00:11:46.399 --> 00:11:48.840
about how Chris used to make him take different routes

234
00:11:49.159 --> 00:11:52.039
to and from the airport. He was always checking out

235
00:11:52.120 --> 00:11:54.960
the back window, concerned that somebody might be following him.

236
00:11:55.440 --> 00:11:58.240
He also talked a lot about the murder of Marissa Vasiri,

237
00:11:58.559 --> 00:12:01.919
the daughter of the famous Iron Cheek. Perhaps he was

238
00:12:01.919 --> 00:12:05.000
worried about the same thing happening to his children, though

239
00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:07.799
it's worth noting that Vizieri's death was not the result

240
00:12:07.919 --> 00:12:11.919
of stalking or security failure. She was murdered by her boyfriend.

241
00:12:12.440 --> 00:12:15.879
To make matters worse, Chris was moved from the WWE

242
00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:20.799
to the ECW or Extreme Championship Wrestling, even though he

243
00:12:20.879 --> 00:12:23.559
was promised a belt. It was seen as a emotion.

244
00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:25.960
It seems like a really bad idea because I remember

245
00:12:25.960 --> 00:12:29.720
we talked about last time, the Extreme Championship Wrestling is

246
00:12:29.799 --> 00:12:32.519
more violent, right, we would do things that were just

247
00:12:32.679 --> 00:12:37.000
even more risky and dangerous Gregory Hurricane.

248
00:12:37.000 --> 00:12:39.799
Helms later told police about a text exchange he'd had

249
00:12:39.879 --> 00:12:43.919
with Benoir contained within We're disturbing jokes that give us

250
00:12:43.919 --> 00:12:47.519
a good idea about Benoir's attitude towards Nancy and women.

251
00:12:47.559 --> 00:12:51.519
More broadly, on June fourteenth, two thousand and seven, Chris

252
00:12:51.559 --> 00:12:54.600
texted Helms quote, how many men does it take to

253
00:12:54.639 --> 00:12:58.600
open a bottle of beer? None? It should already be

254
00:12:58.639 --> 00:13:02.240
open when the bitch brings Ugh that's bad, isn't it.

255
00:13:03.600 --> 00:13:07.000
On June sixteenth, two days after that text message, Nancy

256
00:13:07.039 --> 00:13:11.000
attended one of Chris's shows in Alabama. Everybody backstage was

257
00:13:11.039 --> 00:13:14.600
acting strange, like they were keeping something from her. Nancy

258
00:13:14.639 --> 00:13:18.039
suspected Chris may be having an affair. Nancy may have

259
00:13:18.120 --> 00:13:22.360
been correct. The gossip inside the WWE was that Michelle McCool,

260
00:13:22.480 --> 00:13:25.039
a twenty seven year old who had recently been added

261
00:13:25.080 --> 00:13:28.600
to the roster, was having a fling with Chris. While

262
00:13:28.600 --> 00:13:32.399
there's no concrete proof of this, it's certainly possible. Chris

263
00:13:32.399 --> 00:13:35.399
had at one point texted a colleague asking for her number.

264
00:13:36.039 --> 00:13:39.639
They often coincidentally ended up in the same shows. Chris

265
00:13:39.679 --> 00:13:41.720
had a second cell phone, which he tried to hide

266
00:13:41.759 --> 00:13:44.759
from Nancy. She knew about it, of course, as Chris

267
00:13:44.840 --> 00:13:48.200
wasn't particularly crafty, even if he thought he was, he

268
00:13:48.240 --> 00:13:51.919
would often take phone calls outside away from Nancy, seeking privacy.

269
00:13:52.559 --> 00:13:55.720
These could have been phone calls with McCool. Others in

270
00:13:55.759 --> 00:13:58.799
the WWE. Claim that Chris was never unfaithful to his

271
00:13:58.879 --> 00:14:02.039
wife was also the question of whether Chris was even

272
00:14:02.080 --> 00:14:05.279
able to perform sexually. It was a constant complaint of

273
00:14:05.399 --> 00:14:08.840
Nancy's Michelle McCool and the Undertaker had been in a

274
00:14:08.840 --> 00:14:13.240
secret relationship for years and later married. Nancy at this

275
00:14:13.360 --> 00:14:17.679
point was herself also self medicating with alcohol and prescription drugs.

276
00:14:18.159 --> 00:14:22.279
But Nancy was right about the WWE's wellness program. Chris

277
00:14:22.320 --> 00:14:26.320
even passed the test days before his death. His toxicology

278
00:14:26.399 --> 00:14:30.360
report revealed that he had hydrocodone and xanax, both at

279
00:14:30.399 --> 00:14:34.759
therapeutic levels in his system, and elevated levels of testosterone,

280
00:14:34.879 --> 00:14:38.960
but no alcohol. Chris's encounters with the wellness program had

281
00:14:38.960 --> 00:14:42.600
done nothing to curb his dependence on steroids. He had

282
00:14:42.600 --> 00:14:46.159
been abusing steroids since high school. The long term abuse

283
00:14:46.200 --> 00:14:49.679
had so badly damaged his endocrine system that Chris's body

284
00:14:49.679 --> 00:14:54.879
could no longer produce testosterone naturally. Chris's personal physician, doctor

285
00:14:54.879 --> 00:14:59.440
phil Astin, was able to prescribe testosterone replacement therapy as

286
00:14:59.480 --> 00:15:05.960
a necessary medical treatment. Chris also ordered steroids online. Low testosterone,

287
00:15:05.960 --> 00:15:11.320
also called hypogonadism, can result in fatigue, depression, lower cognitive function,

288
00:15:11.799 --> 00:15:16.759
low libido, reduced muscle mass, and mood changes. Testosterone is

289
00:15:16.759 --> 00:15:19.720
critical to both men and women, although women require less

290
00:15:19.759 --> 00:15:23.039
of the hormone toward the end, Nancy had a phone

291
00:15:23.039 --> 00:15:26.279
call with Pam Clark, the widow of the deceased WWE

292
00:15:26.440 --> 00:15:30.120
referee Brian Hildebrand. She laid it all out on the table.

293
00:15:30.840 --> 00:15:34.440
Chris's mood swings were unbearable. He was outright abusive, and

294
00:15:34.519 --> 00:15:38.120
they constantly fought about money and sex. She was keeping

295
00:15:38.120 --> 00:15:40.960
evidence of his abuse hidden away in a safe place.

296
00:15:41.720 --> 00:15:44.799
She was plotting an escape. Soon she would take Daniel

297
00:15:44.840 --> 00:15:47.559
back to Florida, where her side of the family still lived.

298
00:15:48.399 --> 00:15:51.559
They ended the conversation with a particularly damning quote that

299
00:15:51.720 --> 00:15:55.080
is all too familiar to true crime listeners. If anything

300
00:15:55.080 --> 00:15:57.679
happens to me, make sure that people know that Chris

301
00:15:57.720 --> 00:16:01.200
did it. Early on some one day June twenty fourth,

302
00:16:01.240 --> 00:16:04.960
two thousand and seven, fellow wrestler Chavo Guerrero, ATI's nephew,

303
00:16:05.440 --> 00:16:09.639
and referee Scott Armstrong were sent the same cryptic message.

304
00:16:09.720 --> 00:16:12.919
Each received the message twice, once from Chris's phone and

305
00:16:12.919 --> 00:16:17.279
once from Nancy's phone. It read quote, my physical address

306
00:16:17.360 --> 00:16:20.840
is one three zero Green Meadow Lane, Fayetteville, Georgia three

307
00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:24.000
O two one five. The dogs are in the enclosed

308
00:16:24.039 --> 00:16:28.639
pool area. Garage side door is open end quote. Chavo

309
00:16:28.679 --> 00:16:31.919
and Scott were concerned by these text messages, especially in

310
00:16:32.000 --> 00:16:35.679
concert with Benoi's absence at multiple important shows in Texas

311
00:16:36.000 --> 00:16:40.240
over that weekend. Benoi had told WWE officials that he

312
00:16:40.320 --> 00:16:43.799
was unavailable as Nancy and Daniel were both sick. They

313
00:16:43.840 --> 00:16:47.639
had food poisoning, he claimed, and were vomiting blood. Chavo

314
00:16:47.720 --> 00:16:51.360
and Scott informed the WWE, who in turn instructed Dennis

315
00:16:51.360 --> 00:16:53.200
Fagan to call in a wellness check.

316
00:16:54.240 --> 00:16:57.759
Thanks mencious eschew Hi. I just spoke to one of

317
00:16:57.759 --> 00:17:00.320
the other officers there. My name is Dennis Fagan, TI

319

World Wrestling, and one of our wrestlers that lives down

320
00:17:05.160 --> 00:17:07.279
there is missing. And he told me to just to

321
00:17:07.279 --> 00:17:11.200
say we need a welfare check done. Okay, what's the address?

322

One Green Metal Lane? The ziplot this three zero two

323

327
00:17:35.200 --> 00:17:38.480
Okay, and he's a wrestler, yes, he's what happened. He's

328
00:17:38.480 --> 00:17:40.559
her a religious gentleman. And yesterday he was supposed to

329
00:17:40.559 --> 00:17:42.079
show up at a pay per view and never got

330
00:17:42.119 --> 00:17:44.480
on the plane never showed up. They tried to reach

331
00:17:44.519 --> 00:17:46.519
his wife, Nancy. She doesn't answer. They tried to call

332
00:17:46.519 --> 00:17:49.680
his house. It's unlow. It's had a character for him.

333
00:17:50.079 --> 00:17:52.319
So at three o'clock this morning, there was a message

334
00:17:52.440 --> 00:17:54.960
left but one of the other wrestlers, and basically it says,

335
00:17:55.759 --> 00:17:58.640
the dogs are in the backyard, the back door is opened, goodbye,

336
00:17:58.759 --> 00:18:01.519
and that was it. Okay, what is height? Chris is

337
00:18:01.559 --> 00:18:04.599
about six to one, very muscular, very stock. He has

338
00:18:04.720 --> 00:18:09.279
a very wide neck. Looks like a rest of ut Okay,

339
00:18:09.640 --> 00:18:14.359
white male, black male, yes, male, white, white male. Okay,

340
00:18:14.559 --> 00:18:15.720
I got shot up.

341
00:18:15.799 --> 00:18:16.240
Black hair.

342
00:18:17.200 --> 00:18:19.640
It's like he'd never seen Chris and wah before because

343
00:18:19.720 --> 00:18:22.680
Chris had like sandy brown hair. And he wasn't six

344
00:18:22.680 --> 00:18:24.960
to one, No, it was nowhere near six foot one.

345
00:18:25.000 --> 00:18:28.359
Yeah, it's very strange. The police showed up, couldn't get

346
00:18:28.359 --> 00:18:32.039
through the fence and recruited Holly, the Benoa's neighbor. She

347
00:18:32.200 --> 00:18:36.599
led the dogs inside, then ran out screaming. Moments later, quote,

348
00:18:36.680 --> 00:18:39.200
Daniel and Nancy have been murdered. They've killed the family.

349
00:18:39.839 --> 00:18:42.160
The police ran to her and tried to calm her down.

350
00:18:42.559 --> 00:18:44.839
They asked her where in the house the bodies were

351
00:18:45.160 --> 00:18:48.480
then instructed her to stay outside in the driveway. The

352
00:18:48.519 --> 00:18:52.400
police followed Holly's directions, they found the bodies, including Chris.

353
00:18:53.160 --> 00:18:55.720
His body was in the basement, which Chris used as

354
00:18:55.720 --> 00:18:59.119
a home gym. He was shirtless, slumped over in a

355
00:18:59.160 --> 00:19:02.640
sitting position, wearing jim shorts and sneakers. He had hung

356
00:19:02.759 --> 00:19:06.319
himself with the cable of his lap pulled down weight machine.

357
00:19:06.440 --> 00:19:08.319
He had made sure to wrap a towel around his

358
00:19:08.400 --> 00:19:11.440
neck so the cable wouldn't cut through his throat. Evidently

359
00:19:11.480 --> 00:19:13.960
he didn't want to bleed out, he wanted to suffocate.

360
00:19:14.759 --> 00:19:17.880
Chris had modified the weight machine with dumbbells, ensuring that

361
00:19:17.960 --> 00:19:20.480
it would have enough force behind it to do the job.

362
00:19:21.200 --> 00:19:24.160
The death would have been very painful. If Chris had

363
00:19:24.200 --> 00:19:26.720
wanted to kill himself painlessly, he had the means to

364
00:19:26.759 --> 00:19:29.240
do so. He had plenty of drugs in his home,

365
00:19:29.559 --> 00:19:33.160
but he chose the weight machine. Nancy's cell phone and

366
00:19:33.240 --> 00:19:35.480
his own were on the floor beside him, next to

367
00:19:35.519 --> 00:19:38.920
an empty bottle of murlou. The house was very tidy

368
00:19:38.960 --> 00:19:41.799
and clean, but several beer cans and wine bottles were

369
00:19:41.839 --> 00:19:45.519
found throughout the house. The most likely scenario seems to

370
00:19:45.559 --> 00:19:49.039
be the following On Friday, Chris took Daniel to horseback

371
00:19:49.119 --> 00:19:51.680
riding camp at his neighbor's house before he headed to

372
00:19:51.720 --> 00:19:55.359
his doctor for a routine visit to refill his prescriptions.

373
00:19:56.160 --> 00:19:59.160
The doctor later reported that Chris seemed normal, but he

374
00:19:59.160 --> 00:20:02.400
did complain about Nancy being moody and suggested that she

375
00:20:02.480 --> 00:20:06.160
was going through menopause. Chris reported that he was suffering

376
00:20:06.160 --> 00:20:10.200
from depression, and the doctor prescribed him with Zoloft. Later

377
00:20:10.240 --> 00:20:13.119
that evening, pool workers showed up to do some maintenance

378
00:20:13.160 --> 00:20:16.240
and reported that they had seen Chris grilling with Daniel

379
00:20:16.279 --> 00:20:19.559
by his side. Chris and Nancy fought on the evening

380
00:20:19.559 --> 00:20:23.359
of Friday, June twenty second, after dinner. Perhaps Nancy had

381
00:20:23.400 --> 00:20:25.720
some wine and was emboldened to say what was on

382
00:20:25.799 --> 00:20:29.079
her mind. Maybe she admitted that she was thinking about

383
00:20:29.119 --> 00:20:33.279
taking Daniel and leaving Chris. Whatever words were exchanged, they

384
00:20:33.319 --> 00:20:36.640
angered Chris. At the end, Nancy knew her life was

385
00:20:36.640 --> 00:20:40.000
in danger. At nine twenty five pm, she had made

386
00:20:40.000 --> 00:20:42.599
a four to one one request for the police department's

387
00:20:42.599 --> 00:20:45.279
phone number, but she never actually went through with it

388
00:20:45.359 --> 00:20:48.319
and called the police. Maybe she thought they wouldn't get

389
00:20:48.359 --> 00:20:51.599
there on time. At nine thirty two pm. She called

390
00:20:51.640 --> 00:20:55.720
Holly's cell phone three times. Holly didn't answer. Was she

391
00:20:55.799 --> 00:20:59.200
calling Holly because she knew she was in danger. Chris

392
00:20:59.200 --> 00:21:02.119
attacked Nancy in her office, then restrained her for some

393
00:21:02.240 --> 00:21:06.000
period of time using duct tape and electrical cords. The

394
00:21:06.039 --> 00:21:08.960
police found a gag a tube sock covered in blood

395
00:21:09.240 --> 00:21:11.519
in the trash, so we can assume that at some

396
00:21:11.680 --> 00:21:15.480
point Chris was trying to keep Nancy quiet, potentially trying

397
00:21:15.519 --> 00:21:19.400
to hide her from Daniel. Chris wrapped another electrical cord

398
00:21:19.440 --> 00:21:22.480
around Nancy's neck. He placed his knee on her back,

399
00:21:22.559 --> 00:21:25.680
then yanked the cord back, choking her until she stopped breathing.

400
00:21:26.759 --> 00:21:29.799
Chris sedated Daniel to keep him asleep while he figured

401
00:21:29.799 --> 00:21:33.799
out what to do. Toxicology found xanax in Daniel's system,

402
00:21:33.880 --> 00:21:36.960
which means that Chris dosed him with the drug, a drug,

403
00:21:37.000 --> 00:21:38.440
by the way, that is not meant to be taken

404
00:21:38.480 --> 00:21:42.480
by children. The nature of Daniel's wounds, internal injuries to

405
00:21:42.559 --> 00:21:46.559
the throat with no bruising on the exterior skin, suggests

406
00:21:46.599 --> 00:21:49.119
that Daniel either had a bad reaction to the xanax

407
00:21:49.160 --> 00:21:52.319
and choked to death on his own saliva or that

408
00:21:52.400 --> 00:21:54.680
Chris had put Daniel in some sort of choke hold.

409
00:21:55.640 --> 00:21:58.039
Either way, he was likely unconscious at the time of

410
00:21:58.079 --> 00:22:01.680
his death. A large bush knife was found under his bed.

411
00:22:02.279 --> 00:22:04.920
It hadn't been used, but it was a jarring discovery.

412
00:22:05.920 --> 00:22:09.400
Chris spent most of Saturday, June twenty third, considering his options.

413
00:22:09.759 --> 00:22:12.720
He kept up appearances, or at least tried to with

414
00:22:12.799 --> 00:22:17.440
a food poisoning excuse. Maybe the vomiting blood excuse was

415
00:22:17.519 --> 00:22:20.519
laying the groundwork for a way out. If Chris sat

416
00:22:20.559 --> 00:22:23.200
the stage right, maybe he could play their deaths off

417
00:22:23.240 --> 00:22:26.079
as the result of a freak illness. Chris also spent

418
00:22:26.119 --> 00:22:29.839
the day drinking. He left this voicemail for fellow wrestler

419
00:22:29.920 --> 00:22:33.240
Michael Parker, in which he is slurring his words.

420
00:22:34.039 --> 00:22:37.000
Backer, this has been an it's but five to two

421
00:22:37.079 --> 00:22:43.240
napping in so Basonally Man finally hadn't heard going want

422
00:22:43.359 --> 00:22:48.799
collection cruse Trudias on the play home into Atlantic. He

423
00:22:49.319 --> 00:22:52.000
kind of got shifted it over and that really fucking sucks.

424
00:22:54.599 --> 00:22:57.759
But you know, if there's anything I can do, oh Man,

425
00:22:58.880 --> 00:23:03.799
please give me calm let me know, and you know,

426
00:23:05.440 --> 00:23:09.440
you know I'm not kind of Pat's not gonna changed

427
00:23:09.440 --> 00:23:12.880
his experience, like nothing should be better in experience, and

428
00:23:12.920 --> 00:23:16.559
you get that. It's like, uh, you know, I'm just

429
00:23:16.599 --> 00:23:18.160
talking about the talking here right now.

430
00:23:18.200 --> 00:23:20.799
I don't know what I'm details are on the top

431
00:23:20.799 --> 00:23:22.799
of my head, but it goes well.

432
00:23:22.599 --> 00:23:25.000
With you, man, And uh, I just missed you last

433
00:23:25.039 --> 00:23:26.640
couple of weeks. Upon a point of that, I hope

434
00:23:26.640 --> 00:23:30.039
you're here in a while, I became who eats the Champs?

435
00:23:30.079 --> 00:23:32.599
Give me call pick care man? What does well?

436
00:23:32.880 --> 00:23:33.000
Right?

437
00:23:34.400 --> 00:23:37.039
So did that call likely happen after he had already

438
00:23:37.079 --> 00:23:38.400
killed Nancy and Daniel?

439
00:23:38.480 --> 00:23:38.680
Yeah?

440
00:23:38.680 --> 00:23:39.160
I think so.

441
00:23:39.359 --> 00:23:42.839
I mean, he definitely sounds intoxicated, but he sounds pretty.

442
00:23:43.000 --> 00:23:46.720
It's so weird, I know, because times he sounds lucid

443
00:23:46.799 --> 00:23:48.359
and then there's just gibberius.

444
00:23:48.440 --> 00:23:49.839
Yeah, that's really weird to hear that.

445
00:23:50.319 --> 00:23:52.839
Chris also spoke with Holly on the phone that afternoon.

446
00:23:53.000 --> 00:23:56.640
The conversation lasted nine minutes. Christ told Holly that Daniel

447
00:23:56.640 --> 00:24:00.079
couldn't make it to her horse riding camp. He and

448
00:24:00.119 --> 00:24:04.039
Nancy were both sick with food poisoning. Chris's Internet search

449
00:24:04.200 --> 00:24:07.920
history shows that at three forty nine pm, he googled Elijah.

450
00:24:08.440 --> 00:24:10.599
He was looking for the biblical story of the prophet

451
00:24:10.599 --> 00:24:13.759
Elijah from the Old Testament Book of Kings and the

452
00:24:13.759 --> 00:24:17.039
story Elijah is sent to a widow whose child dies.

453
00:24:17.640 --> 00:24:20.640
Elijah takes the boy's body and pleads to God, quote,

454
00:24:20.680 --> 00:24:24.799
please restore this boy's soul to his body. God grants

455
00:24:24.839 --> 00:24:27.480
Elijah's wish, and the widow's son is returned to her.

456
00:24:28.000 --> 00:24:32.119
Chris also searched quickest and easiest way to break your neck.

457
00:24:32.960 --> 00:24:36.000
Chris killed himself on Sunday after he sent the text

458
00:24:36.000 --> 00:24:39.599
messages to Chabo and Scott. He removed the bar from

459
00:24:39.640 --> 00:24:42.119
his lap, pulled down machine, tied a noose out of

460
00:24:42.200 --> 00:24:45.039
the metal cord, wrapped it around his neck, and adjusted

461
00:24:45.039 --> 00:24:48.000
the weights to two hundred and forty pounds, then released it,

462
00:24:48.079 --> 00:24:53.480
hanging himself. Friend and fellow wrestler Chris Jericho, texted Chris

463
00:24:53.519 --> 00:24:56.839
that afternoon, quote, just heard that Biff Wellington died of

464
00:24:56.839 --> 00:25:01.200
a heart attack this weekend. Chris never received that text message.

465
00:25:02.000 --> 00:25:05.720
If Wellington was forty four years old. We'll be back

466
00:25:05.759 --> 00:25:15.160
after a break. Before we jump back into the case,

467
00:25:15.200 --> 00:25:17.799
I'm going to do something we've never done before. Oh boy,

468
00:25:18.000 --> 00:25:20.279
I feel like the snack was a little lame. It

469
00:25:20.400 --> 00:25:22.799
wasn't like a filling snack. Not that this is a

470
00:25:22.799 --> 00:25:26.559
filling snack, but I brought you some of these skittles mid.

471
00:25:26.640 --> 00:25:27.599
A midpoint snack.

472
00:25:27.759 --> 00:25:32.960
Yeah, okay, the skittles. I bought them for Christmas, the

473
00:25:33.000 --> 00:25:37.440
freeze dried skittles. Do you want to try a couple? Sure? Okay,

474
00:25:37.799 --> 00:25:38.720
I think they're really good.

475
00:25:39.559 --> 00:25:40.799
Well that was real interesting.

476
00:25:41.599 --> 00:25:42.400
Yeah, do you like them?

477
00:25:42.480 --> 00:25:42.720
Yeah?

478
00:25:42.799 --> 00:25:43.599
Well, I think they're really cool.

479
00:25:43.720 --> 00:25:45.839
Freeze dried skittles. What do they think of next?

480
00:25:46.079 --> 00:25:49.440
Freeze dried? Like freeze dried candy is all the rage

481
00:25:49.519 --> 00:25:51.839
right now, is it? Yeah? All sorts of different kinds.

482
00:25:51.839 --> 00:25:53.839
But yeah, if you's I think I got it at Target,

483
00:25:54.319 --> 00:25:55.880
I would definitely check it out.

484
00:25:55.960 --> 00:25:56.559
Yeah, it was good.

485
00:25:57.720 --> 00:26:00.480
That night, only hours after the discovery of the bodies,

486
00:26:00.519 --> 00:26:04.440
the WWE held a three hour tribute show in place

487
00:26:04.480 --> 00:26:08.319
of the regularly scheduled Monday Night Raw Good Evening.

488
00:26:09.920 --> 00:26:12.720
Tonight, thisareinta here in Corpus Christi, Texas was to have

489
00:26:12.759 --> 00:26:22.559
been filled to capacity with enthusiastic WWE fans. Tonight's storyline

490
00:26:22.640 --> 00:26:26.680
was to have been the alleged demise of my character,

491
00:26:26.759 --> 00:26:35.920
mister McMahon. However, in reality, WW superstar Cris BINOI his

492
00:26:36.000 --> 00:26:42.720
wife Nancy, and their son Daniel are dead. Their bodies

493
00:26:42.720 --> 00:26:46.720
were discovered this afternoon in their new suburban Atlanta home.

494
00:26:48.440 --> 00:26:55.279
The authorities are undergoing an investigation. We here in the

495
00:26:55.359 --> 00:26:58.799
WW you can only offer our condolences to the extended

496
00:26:58.799 --> 00:27:03.480
family of Chrispin Waugh, and the only other thing we

497
00:27:03.519 --> 00:27:07.880
can do at this moment, it's to night paid tribute

498
00:27:08.279 --> 00:27:09.119
to Chrispin Waugh.

499
00:27:10.240 --> 00:27:13.000
At that point, the investigation had not yet confirmed that

500
00:27:13.079 --> 00:27:17.720
Benoi's death to be murder slash suicide, but there was

501
00:27:17.799 --> 00:27:21.400
evidence pointing in that direction. By that time, a break

502
00:27:21.440 --> 00:27:23.839
in had been ruled out by the police or any

503
00:27:23.880 --> 00:27:26.240
other parties being present in the home during the time

504
00:27:26.279 --> 00:27:30.559
of the incident. The ww's e's decision was considered hasty

505
00:27:30.680 --> 00:27:35.240
and unwise. The clip we just played was Vince McMahon's

506
00:27:35.279 --> 00:27:38.920
talking straight to the camera in an empty arena, standing

507
00:27:38.960 --> 00:27:40.319
in the middle of the ring.

508
00:27:40.440 --> 00:27:42.160
It does seem like a really kind of a bad

509
00:27:42.319 --> 00:27:46.000
decision having you know, obviously they didn't know exactly what

510
00:27:46.039 --> 00:27:48.559
had happened, but it seemed like it was probably fairly

511
00:27:48.680 --> 00:27:52.200
obvious what had happened exactly. Just seemed like not not

512
00:27:52.359 --> 00:27:54.559
very not a very good idea.

513
00:27:54.119 --> 00:27:57.759
And Vince referenced the death of his character mister McMahon.

514
00:27:58.079 --> 00:28:01.240
We talked about that in the first step, so Mince

515
00:28:01.319 --> 00:28:05.000
McMahon's character mister McMahon had been killed off. It was

516
00:28:05.039 --> 00:28:07.720
in a car explosion, so it was supposed to be

517
00:28:07.799 --> 00:28:11.559
his funeral of that night. Here's a tribute from Stone

518
00:28:11.559 --> 00:28:13.559
Cold Steve Austin to Crispin Wah.

519
00:28:13.799 --> 00:28:16.400
I want to tell the world that I think it

520
00:28:16.519 --> 00:28:19.039
Crispin wa was one of the most talented individuals I've

521
00:28:19.079 --> 00:28:22.880
ever known in my life. Anytime I've ever seen the

522
00:28:22.880 --> 00:28:25.519
guy work, it didn't matter if there was fifteen people

523
00:28:25.519 --> 00:28:28.599
in the building or if there's thirty thousand people in

524
00:28:28.640 --> 00:28:31.720
the building. Anytime Crispin Waugh went to the ring, he

525
00:28:31.759 --> 00:28:35.279
gave it one and twenty percent every single night of

526
00:28:35.319 --> 00:28:39.079
the week. And I didn't get a chance to wrestle

527
00:28:39.160 --> 00:28:40.960
Chris a whole lot of times. But one of my

528
00:28:40.960 --> 00:28:44.039
favorite matches my whole career was wrestling Crispin Waugh in

529
00:28:44.119 --> 00:28:48.720
his hometown of Edmonton, Canada. One of my favorite matches

530
00:28:48.759 --> 00:28:52.160
with the Guy, and the Guy is probably one of

531
00:28:52.160 --> 00:28:54.240
the most honest people I've ever met in my life,

532
00:28:54.799 --> 00:28:56.599
one of the most hardest working people I've ever known

533
00:28:56.640 --> 00:29:00.079
in my life, and I'm going to miss the guy.

534
00:29:00.400 --> 00:29:03.799
He's one of those guys that you know everything could

535
00:29:03.799 --> 00:29:05.960
be falling down around him, but you never would know

536
00:29:06.000 --> 00:29:08.079
it by talking to Chris, just because he always held

537
00:29:08.079 --> 00:29:11.359
everything together. He was just always so polite and generous

538
00:29:11.480 --> 00:29:14.799
with everything, with his time, with his knowledge, and uh,

539
00:29:15.799 --> 00:29:19.400
I can just say that I'm gonna miss him very much,

540
00:29:19.559 --> 00:29:22.319
very much, and I wish he was still with us.

541
00:29:22.400 --> 00:29:26.880
And I have nothing but total respect for Chris bin Will,

542
00:29:27.559 --> 00:29:29.640
and I sure wish that he was still with us.

543
00:29:30.720 --> 00:29:31.599
I love you, Chris.

544
00:29:32.880 --> 00:29:37.759
And here's John Cena. H.

545
00:29:41.119 --> 00:29:43.240
I firmly believe this is the most difficult thing that

546
00:29:43.279 --> 00:29:48.440
I've ever had to do. And I'm sure you'll hear

547
00:29:48.440 --> 00:29:55.000
from plenty of people tonight and you'll see some fantastic moments.

548
00:29:58.799 --> 00:30:01.599
This has just been a very, uh, a very sudden occurrence,

549
00:30:01.599 --> 00:30:03.359
and I don't necessarily know how to react to it,

550
00:30:05.279 --> 00:30:12.559
and that's what makes it difficult. My first instinct tells

551
00:30:12.599 --> 00:30:16.799
me that we should, uh, we should celebrate the life

552
00:30:16.839 --> 00:30:18.039
of Chris Benois.

553
00:30:24.599 --> 00:30:25.000
And U.

554
00:30:27.000 --> 00:30:28.799
And I I think that's the right thing to do.

555
00:30:29.839 --> 00:30:36.240
And Christmas. Chris was a type of guy he'd wanna

556
00:30:36.240 --> 00:30:39.440
go to war with. He was just a just a

557
00:30:39.440 --> 00:30:45.920
hard note son of a bitch. But man he Uh

558
00:30:46.640 --> 00:30:48.319
if he knew he meant business, he would look out

559
00:30:48.359 --> 00:30:51.119
for you. And he took care of a lot of

560
00:30:51.160 --> 00:30:56.039
the people you gonna hear from tonight. Uh. Formed formed

561
00:30:56.039 --> 00:31:01.000
bonds with those people, very very very close bonds. Some

562
00:31:01.079 --> 00:31:02.640
we're going to talk to you like they were his brother.

563
00:31:04.160 --> 00:31:05.039
He was a good man.

564
00:31:07.079 --> 00:31:09.319
Much of the tribute, as was usually the case with

565
00:31:09.359 --> 00:31:11.759
this type of show, was made up of wrestlers recalling

566
00:31:11.799 --> 00:31:15.559
their favorite memories and speaking straight into the camera in

567
00:31:15.640 --> 00:31:20.279
reality TV confessional manner about what the deceased meant to them.

568
00:31:20.720 --> 00:31:24.480
While filming this particular tribune, multiple wrestlers were suspicious about

569
00:31:24.480 --> 00:31:27.680
what had happened. While McMahon and the w w E

570
00:31:27.839 --> 00:31:31.599
plowed ahead with their tone deaf ceremony, John Layfield pulled

571
00:31:31.599 --> 00:31:35.559
aside William Regal and asked, you don't think he has

572
00:31:35.599 --> 00:31:38.440
anything to do with it, do you? The thought had

573
00:31:38.519 --> 00:31:41.680
crossed his mind. Regal's wife, Christina, had been good friends

574
00:31:41.720 --> 00:31:45.240
with Martina. Christina had never liked Crisp and Wah and

575
00:31:45.359 --> 00:31:48.039
made it clear to her husband he was to never

576
00:31:48.119 --> 00:31:51.799
let that man near their house. Perhaps Martina had shared

577
00:31:51.799 --> 00:31:55.880
some details about their marriage with Christina Regal covering his

578
00:31:55.960 --> 00:31:59.440
bases kept his segment short and vague. It was under

579
00:31:59.480 --> 00:32:01.519
a minute, and there was none of the teary eyed

580
00:32:01.599 --> 00:32:05.519
reminiscing that usually characterized these testimonials.

581
00:32:05.920 --> 00:32:08.240
At a later day, I'll be quite happy to sit

582
00:32:08.319 --> 00:32:13.079
here and tell you all the things about Chris Benwarre

583
00:32:13.200 --> 00:32:19.039
that I'd like to tell you, But now all I'm

584
00:32:19.039 --> 00:32:25.720
willing to say is that Chris ben Warre was undoubtedly

585
00:32:26.319 --> 00:32:31.480
the hardest working man in professional wrestling, the most dedicated

586
00:32:32.920 --> 00:32:42.039
and totally absorbed in the business of professional wrestling about

587
00:32:42.200 --> 00:32:43.440
anybody I've ever met.

588
00:32:44.559 --> 00:32:45.880
And that's.

589
00:32:49.200 --> 00:32:51.599
All I've really got to say. At the moment. He

590
00:32:51.759 --> 00:32:53.839
was the absolute best.

591
00:32:56.559 --> 00:32:56.920
Thanks.

592
00:32:58.240 --> 00:33:00.720
So you can see there how he's holding back.

593
00:33:00.839 --> 00:33:01.640
Yeah.

594
00:33:01.880 --> 00:33:04.880
Once it had been officially confirmed that he had killed

595
00:33:04.880 --> 00:33:08.000
his family, Crispin WI was scrubbed from the history books.

596
00:33:08.480 --> 00:33:11.519
His merchandise was pulled off of the shelves and destroyed.

597
00:33:11.960 --> 00:33:15.200
His name was taken off of the WWE website. He

598
00:33:15.359 --> 00:33:18.960
was never again mentioned by Vince McMahon of the WWE.

599
00:33:19.440 --> 00:33:23.440
He was edited out of all previous DVD releases. A

600
00:33:23.519 --> 00:33:26.279
market boomed on eBay for secondhand copies of the two

601
00:33:26.359 --> 00:33:30.720
thousand and four documentary The WWE released about ben Wia's

602
00:33:30.759 --> 00:33:34.160
life and career, Hard Knocks, The Crisp and Wis Story.

603
00:33:35.480 --> 00:33:39.119
Investigators found steroids in the Benoi home, squirrelled away in

604
00:33:39.200 --> 00:33:42.920
secret stashes where Nancy wouldn't find them, hiding spots in

605
00:33:42.960 --> 00:33:47.039
the closet, or tucked away in a suitcase. On July seventeenth,

606
00:33:47.039 --> 00:33:50.279
two thousand and seven, the toxicology results were made public.

607
00:33:50.799 --> 00:33:54.319
The amount of testosterone in Benoa's system was off the charts.

608
00:33:55.240 --> 00:33:59.640
This is tested by measuring the testosterone to epitestosterone ratio.

609
00:34:00.240 --> 00:34:02.960
One to one is the normal level, four to one

610
00:34:03.039 --> 00:34:07.000
is high. Chris's levels were fifty nine to one. This

611
00:34:07.119 --> 00:34:10.239
means that he had injected himself with steroids hours before

612
00:34:10.239 --> 00:34:14.320
he died. Chris's autopsy stated that his heart was severely

613
00:34:14.400 --> 00:34:17.519
enlarged at six hundred and twenty grams. The weight of

614
00:34:17.559 --> 00:34:20.280
a normal, average healthy male heart is two hundred and

615
00:34:20.280 --> 00:34:22.400
eighty to three hundred and forty grams.

616
00:34:22.400 --> 00:34:23.960
So almost twice the size.

617
00:34:24.039 --> 00:34:27.800
Yeah Chris's liver was a whopping twoy six hundred and

618
00:34:27.800 --> 00:34:31.199
twenty grams or almost six pounds. A healthy liver is

619
00:34:31.239 --> 00:34:33.639
between two and a half and three and a half pounds.

620
00:34:34.280 --> 00:34:37.239
His spleen was also enlarged at three hundred grams, the

621
00:34:37.280 --> 00:34:40.159
average being one hundred and fifty to two hundred grams.

622
00:34:40.960 --> 00:34:44.679
Chris's autopsy showed no fractured neck or hyoid bones, and

623
00:34:44.719 --> 00:34:48.119
no hemorrhage or trauma in the soft tissues or cartilage

624
00:34:48.159 --> 00:34:48.639
of the neck.

625
00:34:49.119 --> 00:34:51.800
If you look at a picture of Chris's neck, it's

626
00:34:52.000 --> 00:34:55.039
so thick, like, I just wonder if you know his

627
00:34:55.199 --> 00:34:58.880
hyoid bone would have been under so much russell that

628
00:34:58.960 --> 00:35:03.440
maybe you know, couldn't have been reached or impacted.

629
00:35:04.400 --> 00:35:10.159
Chris's heart showed left ventricular hypertrophy and bilateral atrio ventricular dilation,

630
00:35:10.760 --> 00:35:14.000
a common finding in wrestlers who abused steroids and or

631
00:35:14.079 --> 00:35:18.320
human growth hormone. Nancy Benwi's sister said that a doctor

632
00:35:18.360 --> 00:35:20.519
told her that Chris would have been dead in a

633
00:35:20.599 --> 00:35:22.400
year due to his enlarged.

634
00:35:21.960 --> 00:35:25.440
Heart, and just for the record, the autopsy did state

635
00:35:25.519 --> 00:35:28.280
his height at five foot eleven and two hundred and

636
00:35:28.360 --> 00:35:29.239
twenty four pounds.

637
00:35:30.280 --> 00:35:32.800
In the days following the deaths of the Benoi family,

638
00:35:33.159 --> 00:35:36.639
Chris's personal doctor, doctor phil Aston was indicted on one

639
00:35:36.760 --> 00:35:40.519
hundred and seventy five counts, including charges of over prescribing

640
00:35:40.559 --> 00:35:44.679
controlled substances. A federal investigation found that he had written

641
00:35:44.679 --> 00:35:49.559
prescriptions without conducting physical examinations and sometimes gave patients as

642
00:35:49.559 --> 00:35:55.719
many as four simultaneous prescriptions for percocet, OxyContin, vicodin, and

643
00:35:55.960 --> 00:36:00.360
adderall Aston wrote prescriptions for about one million dozen of

644
00:36:00.400 --> 00:36:05.440
controlled substances over a two year period, including significant quantities

645
00:36:05.480 --> 00:36:11.639
of injectable testosterone scipionate, an anabolic steroid. Aston provided ben

646
00:36:11.639 --> 00:36:14.760
Wah with a ten month supply of anabolic steroids every

647
00:36:14.800 --> 00:36:17.960
three to four weeks. Between May two thousand and six

648
00:36:18.000 --> 00:36:21.199
and May two thousand and seven. Chris Benoit and one

649
00:36:21.239 --> 00:36:24.800
other patient died while under his care. He was sentenced

650
00:36:24.800 --> 00:36:27.079
to ten years in prison in two thousand and nine.

651
00:36:27.559 --> 00:36:31.559
He died in June twenty twenty two. Chris's friend and neighbor,

652
00:36:31.639 --> 00:36:34.199
Johnny Grunge, was also a patient of Aston's.

653
00:36:34.480 --> 00:36:36.840
So keep in mind this level of steroids that he

654
00:36:36.920 --> 00:36:39.679
was consuming some of them from we've prescribed, but he

655
00:36:39.840 --> 00:36:42.480
was also ordering some the mail too.

656
00:36:42.800 --> 00:36:45.199
Yeah, I'm glad that the doctor that there were some

657
00:36:45.280 --> 00:36:48.239
consequences because you hear about this way too often with

658
00:36:48.320 --> 00:36:53.159
like celebrities just doctors prescribing drugs, and Michael Jackson's another

659
00:36:53.159 --> 00:36:56.000
good example. So I'm glad that there were consequences. I

660
00:36:56.000 --> 00:37:00.599
guess Nancy's blood alcohol content was not able to be determined.

661
00:37:01.119 --> 00:37:03.800
Her body had begun to break down, and once that happens,

662
00:37:03.840 --> 00:37:07.920
it's impossible to determine a blood alcohol content level. The

663
00:37:07.960 --> 00:37:11.679
police and the media handled the situation poorly. The narrative

664
00:37:11.760 --> 00:37:14.760
was too compelling to ignore, and reporters were desperate to

665
00:37:14.760 --> 00:37:18.320
dig into everything, even before the police themselves quite knew

666
00:37:18.320 --> 00:37:21.360
what they were looking at. Stories about the ben Wase

667
00:37:21.400 --> 00:37:25.079
got good ratings, prompting more reporters to churn out stories quickly,

668
00:37:25.480 --> 00:37:29.800
sometimes at the expense of accuracy. A nationwide frenzy ensued.

669
00:37:30.159 --> 00:37:33.800
The mainstream media did not understand wrestling at all. Most

670
00:37:33.880 --> 00:37:37.079
journalists weren't familiar with the nuanced world of wrestling, so

671
00:37:37.320 --> 00:37:39.559
when they had to report on the industry, they got

672
00:37:39.559 --> 00:37:44.199
stuff wrong, which in turn perpetuated false narratives. It didn't

673
00:37:44.239 --> 00:37:46.559
help that the district attorney in charge of the case,

674
00:37:46.639 --> 00:37:50.880
Scott Ballard, loved the spotlight. He kept using the word bizarre.

675
00:37:51.639 --> 00:37:56.039
The timing. The circumstances, the bibles beside the bodies all bizarre.

676
00:37:56.760 --> 00:37:59.119
Though most of the evidence was cut and dry, DA

677
00:37:59.239 --> 00:38:03.519
Ballard would often loudly publicly speculate. It was for this

678
00:38:03.639 --> 00:38:06.559
reason that the media reported that Daniel had a genetic

679
00:38:06.599 --> 00:38:12.000
disorder called fragile X syndrome. Fragile X causes developmental delays,

680
00:38:12.039 --> 00:38:17.639
including speech delays, social anxiety, and behavioral problems. It's estimated

681
00:38:17.679 --> 00:38:20.920
that thirty to fifty percent of individuals with fragile X

682
00:38:20.960 --> 00:38:25.559
syndrome also meet the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder.

683
00:38:26.360 --> 00:38:29.079
The reporting led people to assume that the marriage between

684
00:38:29.159 --> 00:38:32.000
Nancy and Chris was strained in part because they were

685
00:38:32.000 --> 00:38:35.920
caring for a child with special needs. DA Ballard also

686
00:38:35.960 --> 00:38:40.239
perpetuated the lie that Daniel's arm had needle marks. Daniel

687
00:38:40.360 --> 00:38:43.639
was uncommonly small for his age, and the DA suggested

688
00:38:43.679 --> 00:38:46.679
that Chris had been injecting his own son with human

689
00:38:46.719 --> 00:38:50.760
growth hormone. These reports of needle marks were not corroborated

690
00:38:50.800 --> 00:38:54.039
by the coroner, but the WWE took this ball and

691
00:38:54.119 --> 00:38:58.039
ran with it. Their lawyer, Jerry McDevitt, eagerly spread the

692
00:38:58.039 --> 00:39:02.400
theory that Daniel had fragile XCS syndrome. Linda McMahon took

693
00:39:02.440 --> 00:39:06.159
to Good Morning America to proffer this same theory. Surely

694
00:39:06.199 --> 00:39:08.599
this is why Chris Benoi had been driven crazy. He

695
00:39:08.719 --> 00:39:11.039
had been dealing with the stress of his son's physical

696
00:39:11.079 --> 00:39:15.480
and mental condition. The WWE was gaslating the country in

697
00:39:15.519 --> 00:39:19.400
an attempt to evade any responsibility for the Benoi's deaths.

698
00:39:20.280 --> 00:39:22.360
It was a fact that the wellness program was a

699
00:39:22.400 --> 00:39:24.840
sham and the bottom line was more important than the

700
00:39:24.880 --> 00:39:28.039
health of their wrestlers, who risked their lives and livelihood

701
00:39:28.039 --> 00:39:30.760
each and every time they chose to step into the ring.

702
00:39:31.519 --> 00:39:34.719
How disturbing is that that they were willing to bad

703
00:39:34.800 --> 00:39:39.039
mouth a child and they didn't even have his medical records.

704
00:39:39.159 --> 00:39:43.559
Yeah, that's really, really horrible. By July second, this story

705
00:39:43.599 --> 00:39:47.199
was countered by the Tofaloni family lawyer. They stated there

706
00:39:47.280 --> 00:39:50.039
was no reason to believe that Daniel had fragile X.

707
00:39:50.679 --> 00:39:53.119
Nancy's parents, who had been a very active part of

708
00:39:53.199 --> 00:39:57.599
Daniel's life, had never noticed anything akin to developmental disability.

709
00:39:58.199 --> 00:40:01.039
Neither had any of the parents at daniel Baptist School.

710
00:40:01.760 --> 00:40:05.199
Daniel's teachers confirmed that he was an active, intelligent, happy

711
00:40:05.280 --> 00:40:08.119
child who was developing normally and was ready for first

712
00:40:08.159 --> 00:40:13.199
grade that upcoming fall. Investigators later obtained Daniel's official medical

713
00:40:13.239 --> 00:40:16.239
records and confirmed one hundred percent that there was no

714
00:40:16.280 --> 00:40:19.800
evidence of fragile x. Do you know where the rumor

715
00:40:19.920 --> 00:40:22.159
originated that he had fragile x syndrome.

716
00:40:22.199 --> 00:40:24.920
I'm not sure if it started in the WWE, but

717
00:40:25.159 --> 00:40:28.920
wrestler Chris Jericho. I heard an interview with him and

718
00:40:28.960 --> 00:40:31.960
he goes on Larry King Live, and he said, yeah,

719
00:40:31.960 --> 00:40:34.559
once I heard about the fragile x syndrome, it really

720
00:40:34.599 --> 00:40:37.199
did seem to fit Daniel. I think Daniel was He

721
00:40:37.239 --> 00:40:40.400
was a beautiful child. He was on the smaller side,

722
00:40:40.440 --> 00:40:43.719
and I think he might have been quiet and shy,

723
00:40:43.840 --> 00:40:45.039
and I don't know.

724
00:40:45.440 --> 00:40:46.440
It's really sad.

725
00:40:46.599 --> 00:40:47.440
It is really sad.

726
00:40:48.639 --> 00:40:52.480
Alongside the DA's loose lipped rambling, he also released crime

727
00:40:52.519 --> 00:40:55.519
scene photos and other important evidence to the family within

728
00:40:55.559 --> 00:40:58.639
a day of discovering the bodies. The police had not

729
00:40:58.719 --> 00:41:01.840
been given enough time to document the inside of the house,

730
00:41:01.880 --> 00:41:06.159
and they missed important clues. Luckily, the Tofaloni family found

731
00:41:06.199 --> 00:41:10.280
these clues and handled them responsibly. They found Chris's diary

732
00:41:10.320 --> 00:41:12.920
in the trash, where the police had never bothered to look.

733
00:41:13.480 --> 00:41:16.559
It was full of long, rambling entries. They were often

734
00:41:16.559 --> 00:41:19.280
about the Bible or the letters he wrote to Eddie.

735
00:41:19.679 --> 00:41:22.960
I will be with you soon, he wrote to Eddie.

736
00:41:22.960 --> 00:41:27.079
Many pro wrestling fans believe that Chris is innocent, particularly

737
00:41:27.159 --> 00:41:31.199
in online wrestling forms where conspiracy theorists tend to thrive,

738
00:41:31.639 --> 00:41:35.159
but at least one theory is hard to ignore. Fourteen

739
00:41:35.199 --> 00:41:38.280
hours before Nancy was murdered, a computer with an IP

740
00:41:38.480 --> 00:41:43.960
address based in Stamford, Connecticut, altered Chris Benois's Wikipedia page.

741
00:41:44.360 --> 00:41:47.480
Chris was scheduled to be in Texas that night. When

742
00:41:47.519 --> 00:41:50.559
he failed to show up, his Wikipedia page was altered.

743
00:41:51.000 --> 00:41:54.679
The new edition stated quote Benoit was not there due

744
00:41:54.679 --> 00:41:58.039
to personal issues stemming from the death of his wife.

745
00:41:58.199 --> 00:42:03.719
Nancy's death had been predicted by somebody in Stamford, which

746
00:42:03.840 --> 00:42:08.400
coincidentally is where the WWE is headquartered. Well, this is

747
00:42:08.519 --> 00:42:11.639
enough to raise an eyebrow. Further investigation gave way to

748
00:42:11.679 --> 00:42:15.280
the truth. The editor was a nineteen year old named

749
00:42:15.360 --> 00:42:19.920
Matthew Greenberg who had a record of vandalizing Wikipedia pages.

750
00:42:20.480 --> 00:42:24.320
He was hauled into the police station, interrogated by detectives,

751
00:42:24.679 --> 00:42:27.159
and had the fear of God put into him. He

752
00:42:27.239 --> 00:42:31.079
said it was all a major coincidence. The police let

753
00:42:31.119 --> 00:42:34.360
him off with a warning he hadn't actually committed a crime,

754
00:42:34.920 --> 00:42:35.719
and they moved on.

755
00:42:35.960 --> 00:42:37.639
That's pretty crazy, though, isn't that bizarre?

756
00:42:37.719 --> 00:42:37.960
Yeah?

757
00:42:39.199 --> 00:42:42.840
The next one is also pretty wild. Holly Schrepfer, the

758
00:42:42.920 --> 00:42:47.519
Benois neighbor, saw a wrestler named Squire David Taylor and

759
00:42:47.559 --> 00:42:51.719
his wife Lisa carrying platters of food, like the sort

760
00:42:51.760 --> 00:42:53.800
of thing that you might have at a funeral reception

761
00:42:54.039 --> 00:42:58.079
around the Benoit house. She saw them before their deaths

762
00:42:58.079 --> 00:43:01.880
were officially announced to the public and before the WWE

763
00:43:01.920 --> 00:43:06.239
could have conceivably known what had happened. Perhaps this was

764
00:43:06.360 --> 00:43:09.440
more of a fact finding mission for the WWE to

765
00:43:09.480 --> 00:43:12.480
get ahead of the story, or maybe the tailors had

766
00:43:12.599 --> 00:43:15.960
independently heard that the family had food poisoning. The really

767
00:43:16.000 --> 00:43:19.079
suspicious bit is that David Taylor denies ever being in

768
00:43:19.079 --> 00:43:21.320
Georgia at the time. He claims that he was in

769
00:43:21.400 --> 00:43:25.159
Texas along with the rest of the WWE at the shows.

770
00:43:25.480 --> 00:43:26.639
That's really odd.

771
00:43:26.800 --> 00:43:30.440
Yeah, And some people point to Chris's autopsy is very

772
00:43:30.440 --> 00:43:33.719
suspicious because there was no fracture of his neck or

773
00:43:33.840 --> 00:43:36.920
hywood bone, and no hemorrhage or trauma and the soft

774
00:43:36.920 --> 00:43:42.559
tissues or cartilage of the neck. The most prevalent conspiracy theory, however,

775
00:43:42.679 --> 00:43:46.760
involves Nancy's ex husband, Kevin Sullivan. Many alleged that he

776
00:43:46.840 --> 00:43:50.599
had the greatest motive revenge. If you remember back to

777
00:43:50.639 --> 00:43:54.679
episode one, Kevin's image was based around the occult. There

778
00:43:54.719 --> 00:43:57.679
is no evidence to support this theory. He addressed the

779
00:43:57.679 --> 00:44:00.880
theory on a podcast and he said, quote the speculation

780
00:44:01.039 --> 00:44:03.239
did bother me for a while until I talked to

781
00:44:03.360 --> 00:44:06.719
Nancy's mother and she said, I can't believe that people

782
00:44:06.880 --> 00:44:09.960
even think that, And she made me feel better. The

783
00:44:10.079 --> 00:44:13.119
sister made me feel better. This is how people are

784
00:44:13.159 --> 00:44:16.239
so sick and so much of idle worship. They were

785
00:44:16.239 --> 00:44:18.840
looking for and I don't mean this in any bad light,

786
00:44:19.239 --> 00:44:22.400
but they're looking for and out because he was a great, great, great,

787
00:44:22.440 --> 00:44:25.840
fabulous wrestler. Well never know what caused it, but for

788
00:44:25.920 --> 00:44:29.000
people to believe something like that means they believe that

789
00:44:29.039 --> 00:44:33.599
the earth is hollow or flat or whatever. WWE released

790
00:44:33.639 --> 00:44:37.599
official statements quote steroids were not and could not be

791
00:44:37.719 --> 00:44:42.079
related to the cause of death. WWE strongly suggests that

792
00:44:42.119 --> 00:44:46.119
it is entirely wrong for speculators to suggest that steroids

793
00:44:46.159 --> 00:44:48.400
had anything to do with these senseless acts.

794
00:44:48.440 --> 00:44:50.599
That's that that makes no sense on their part, Like

795
00:44:50.880 --> 00:44:53.719
they're saying you shouldn't speculate, but they're saying steroids were

796
00:44:53.719 --> 00:44:56.800
not absolutely not related to the cause of death. Yes, okay.

797
00:44:57.599 --> 00:45:00.639
Wrestlers and spokesmen were sent out on the media rounds,

798
00:45:00.679 --> 00:45:04.480
morning news and shows like Larry King, Live on the Record,

799
00:45:04.519 --> 00:45:07.760
et cetera. The message was always the same and the

800
00:45:07.760 --> 00:45:12.280
message bears had their talking points well rehearsed. John Cena

801
00:45:12.320 --> 00:45:15.960
and Chris Jericho were rolled out to call any reporters

802
00:45:16.000 --> 00:45:20.760
placing this tragedy at the feet of steroid abuse lazy.

803
00:45:20.480 --> 00:45:23.239
This was a tragedy. This was an unexplainable tragedy that

804
00:45:23.320 --> 00:45:26.800
lasted for nearly two and a half days. I don't

805
00:45:26.880 --> 00:45:29.599
see an out of control rage being responsible for that,

806
00:45:29.639 --> 00:45:32.639
But then again, I don't think we'll ever find out

807
00:45:32.639 --> 00:45:36.119
what exactly caused this. I really I take great offense

808
00:45:36.159 --> 00:45:38.639
to not only people of the media pointing to this

809
00:45:38.840 --> 00:45:41.039
as being a case of roid rage when there hasn't

810
00:45:41.039 --> 00:45:43.840
been any proof of that, but also also pointing a

811
00:45:43.840 --> 00:45:46.400
finger at the ww in hoole saying that we're all

812
00:45:46.480 --> 00:45:48.000
just a bunch of steroid monsters.

813
00:45:48.119 --> 00:45:50.719
If it was roid rage, why would there be a

814
00:45:50.719 --> 00:45:53.079
space of time between the death that's the wife and

815
00:45:53.119 --> 00:45:54.159
the sun and yourself.

816
00:45:54.400 --> 00:45:56.400
I think that's something that's misconception that if you take

817
00:45:56.400 --> 00:45:58.599
a shot of steroids, it's like it's PCP or Angeles,

818
00:45:58.599 --> 00:46:00.760
you just go crazy and do this. That's not the case.

819
00:46:01.039 --> 00:46:03.039
I spoke at links with the psychiatrist here in Los

820
00:46:03.079 --> 00:46:05.679
Angeles who specializes in murdered suicides, and she told me

821
00:46:05.679 --> 00:46:08.679
it's never one thing. It's always a combination of many things.

822
00:46:08.880 --> 00:46:11.760
And I think it's lazy reporting and lazy investigation that

823
00:46:11.800 --> 00:46:13.320
a lot of people are just tying this up in

824
00:46:13.360 --> 00:46:15.840
the nice steroid bow and putting under the corner and

825
00:46:15.880 --> 00:46:18.239
moving along and just saying that's the case. I did

826
00:46:18.280 --> 00:46:21.840
some research. If you are a massive caffeine user and abuser,

827
00:46:22.079 --> 00:46:26.880
it can lead to hallucinations, depression, anxiety, violent behavior, and

828
00:46:26.920 --> 00:46:29.559
sometimes psychotic behavior. Now, if I came on here and

829
00:46:29.559 --> 00:46:31.719
said caffeine causes, you would think I was a lunatic.

830
00:46:31.880 --> 00:46:33.760
If I take out caffeine and put in steroids with

831
00:46:33.760 --> 00:46:37.719
the exact same list of symptoms, you say, bingo, that's it.

832
00:46:37.719 --> 00:46:40.199
It's a combination. This is not about steroids rest. This

833
00:46:40.239 --> 00:46:43.360
is about a man with had some severe mental damaging,

834
00:46:43.400 --> 00:46:45.960
horrible issues in his head that he kept bobble up

835
00:46:46.000 --> 00:46:48.840
inside and it exploded into this horrible, violent act. And

836
00:46:48.880 --> 00:46:50.480
I'm sure there's many factors for it.

837
00:46:50.920 --> 00:46:54.559
Well, the initial act against Nancy could have been an

838
00:46:54.599 --> 00:46:57.760
episode of rage, and then the rest of the weekend

839
00:46:57.920 --> 00:46:59.920
was panic, like how do I fix this?

840
00:47:00.239 --> 00:47:00.440
Right?

841
00:47:00.920 --> 00:47:03.880
They just come off sounding really defensive and like they're

842
00:47:03.920 --> 00:47:07.079
just trying to cover, which is what they were doing essentially.

843
00:47:06.880 --> 00:47:10.360
Right, Oh yeah, exactly. These clips were filmed prior to

844
00:47:10.400 --> 00:47:14.320
the official toxicology report being released. Looking back at these

845
00:47:14.360 --> 00:47:19.320
PR blasts, they've aged terribly. National conversations popped up about

846
00:47:19.599 --> 00:47:22.880
unionization and the rough conditions of wrestling, and how the

847
00:47:22.920 --> 00:47:28.039
action figure physique demanded by the WWE encourages steroid use.

848
00:47:28.960 --> 00:47:31.480
A union would likely be to the benefit of all

849
00:47:31.519 --> 00:47:34.599
pro wrestlers, and yet when the issue was brought up

850
00:47:34.639 --> 00:47:38.480
on Larry King Live, John Cena shot it down immediately.

851
00:47:39.079 --> 00:47:41.119
At what point are pro wrestler is going to say

852
00:47:41.199 --> 00:47:44.400
enough is enough? Band together for a union that would

853
00:47:44.440 --> 00:47:46.960
protect their contracts and get proper benefits.

854
00:47:47.440 --> 00:47:52.239
John I believe that professional wrestlers WW specific and across,

855
00:47:52.480 --> 00:47:55.320
they all know what they're getting into. Nobody is forcing

856
00:47:55.320 --> 00:47:58.239
them to get in the ring. It's a job that

857
00:47:58.239 --> 00:47:59.920
they all want to do, hopefully the job that they

858
00:48:00.039 --> 00:48:02.159
all love to do. I certainly do. I enjoy what

859
00:48:02.199 --> 00:48:03.400
I do for work, and I love what I do

860
00:48:03.440 --> 00:48:06.719
for work. That is, that's just a that's a question

861
00:48:06.800 --> 00:48:08.199
that don't want to be answered because I don't think

862
00:48:08.199 --> 00:48:09.119
they'll be asked.

863
00:48:09.400 --> 00:48:11.239
I don't know much about John Cena out there than

864
00:48:11.320 --> 00:48:13.159
I've seen him in a couple of movies. I had

865
00:48:13.199 --> 00:48:16.320
a pretty positive impression, but this really makes me think less.

866
00:48:16.119 --> 00:48:18.800
Of him same. I guess I didn't realize that he

867
00:48:18.880 --> 00:48:20.679
used to always wrestle in George's too.

868
00:48:21.360 --> 00:48:22.519
I didn't know that either.

869
00:48:23.360 --> 00:48:26.800
At this point in the interview, WWE lawyer Jerry McDevitt

870
00:48:26.800 --> 00:48:29.800
had joined the wrestlers in the studio and Brett Hart

871
00:48:30.159 --> 00:48:34.199
was calling in from Canada. Much to mcdevick's chagrin, Brett

872
00:48:34.199 --> 00:48:37.519
Hart disagreed with John Cena's assessment of the situation.

873
00:48:38.079 --> 00:48:40.519
What about a union, Brett Hodge, Should they have one?

874
00:48:40.960 --> 00:48:45.039
I think definitely wrestlers need a union. I think that

875
00:48:45.360 --> 00:48:49.239
probably the Janitor sweeping at sweeping up at WWE has benefits,

876
00:48:49.320 --> 00:48:52.559
more benefits than than any wrestler. And unfortunately, too many

877
00:48:52.559 --> 00:48:57.719
wrestlers are ending their their lives because they're they're at

878
00:48:57.719 --> 00:48:59.840
a point in their life where there used to be stars,

879
00:49:00.000 --> 00:49:01.920
they used to be famous, and they used to be important,

880
00:49:02.280 --> 00:49:04.920
and they have nothing left and they're broke and they're

881
00:49:04.920 --> 00:49:07.599
depressed about who they are. And there's too far, too

882
00:49:07.639 --> 00:49:10.280
many wrestlers that are killing themselves left and right. And

883
00:49:10.360 --> 00:49:12.880
I definitely think that the same problem is it's going

884
00:49:12.920 --> 00:49:15.079
to keep occurring and occurring and occurring. I don't know

885
00:49:15.119 --> 00:49:17.320
why the wrestlers don't have a union. There's no protection,

886
00:49:17.480 --> 00:49:20.679
there's no benefits for them. They really are any circus animals.

887
00:49:22.000 --> 00:49:24.639
How many other sports have unions.

888
00:49:25.320 --> 00:49:27.280
I don't know for sure, but I believe like every

889
00:49:27.320 --> 00:49:29.119
major sport has a union.

890
00:49:29.719 --> 00:49:32.639
And out of all the sports, I mean, wrestling is

891
00:49:33.280 --> 00:49:35.719
I don't know if it's the most aggressive and dangerous,

892
00:49:35.719 --> 00:49:38.719
but you know it's right up there, right right up there. Yeah,

893
00:49:39.039 --> 00:49:41.480
red heart would be proven right in the coming weeks

894
00:49:41.559 --> 00:49:45.599
months and years. Seven weeks after the Benwat incident, Ryan

895
00:49:45.679 --> 00:49:48.119
Crush Adams was found dead by his wife and their

896
00:49:48.159 --> 00:49:51.199
home in Tampa. He had a cocktail of drugs in

897
00:49:51.199 --> 00:49:55.119
his system, including painkillers and sedatives and muscle relaxers that

898
00:49:55.159 --> 00:49:58.320
I can't pronounce other than xanax, but it was enough

899
00:49:58.360 --> 00:50:01.800
to stop his respiratories system and to stop his breathing.

900
00:50:01.880 --> 00:50:05.159
He was only forty three years old. Here's a partial

901
00:50:05.199 --> 00:50:07.880
list of all the wrestlers under the age of sixty

902
00:50:07.880 --> 00:50:11.079
five who passed away in two thousand and seven. Scott

903
00:50:11.159 --> 00:50:14.119
Bam Bam Bigelow passed away at forty five from a

904
00:50:14.119 --> 00:50:18.880
heart attack. Mike Awesome Alfonso passed away at the age

905
00:50:18.880 --> 00:50:23.199
of forty two from suicide. Sensational Sherry Russell died at

906
00:50:23.199 --> 00:50:27.079
age forty nine of a drug overdose. Nathan Moondog Randolph

907
00:50:27.119 --> 00:50:30.480
died at thirty seven of a heart attack. George Chiazzo

908
00:50:30.599 --> 00:50:34.119
aka John Cronus died at thirty eight of a drug overdose.

909
00:50:34.599 --> 00:50:38.840
Juan Manuel Zuniga aka angel As Teika died at forty

910
00:50:38.840 --> 00:50:42.719
three of a heart attack. John Michael Meek ak Iron

911
00:50:42.840 --> 00:50:47.000
Mike Steele died at age fifty two of vehicular homicide.

912
00:50:47.719 --> 00:50:51.400
Harry Cowboy Lang died at age fifty six of heart disease.

913
00:50:52.039 --> 00:50:56.000
James Patrick Fawcett, also known as Devil Budcan, died at

914
00:50:56.000 --> 00:50:59.719
age thirty two of suicide and Greg Giles died at

915
00:50:59.719 --> 00:51:02.920
four four of a heart attack. And that's not even

916
00:51:02.920 --> 00:51:04.760
if that's not all of the people, that it's just

917
00:51:04.800 --> 00:51:07.559
in one year shocking. Every single one of those heart

918
00:51:07.559 --> 00:51:12.559
attacks is likely attributable to steroids, and CTE likely played

919
00:51:12.840 --> 00:51:16.320
a part in every violent death or suicide. Drug overdoses

920
00:51:16.320 --> 00:51:18.679
can be traced back to the painful injuries these men

921
00:51:18.719 --> 00:51:22.320
and women suffered in the ring. Professional wrestlers are twenty

922
00:51:22.440 --> 00:51:25.599
times more likely to die before the age of forty

923
00:51:25.599 --> 00:51:30.480
five than professional football players. Oh Sports journalist muckraker and

924
00:51:30.559 --> 00:51:35.079
sworn enemy of Vince McMahon, Irvin Muchnik, has written entire

925
00:51:35.119 --> 00:51:38.519
books about the sorry state of pro wrestling. He said,

926
00:51:38.719 --> 00:51:41.960
quote a lot of deaths against the backdrop of a

927
00:51:41.960 --> 00:51:45.480
common workplace. This is a cluster that surely would set

928
00:51:45.480 --> 00:51:48.920
off alarms at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

929
00:51:49.400 --> 00:51:52.840
or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration if the victims

930
00:51:52.920 --> 00:51:57.880
weren't cartoon characters. Too few people regard as actual human beings.

931
00:51:58.719 --> 00:52:02.119
The WWE has changed much in the seventeen years since

932
00:52:02.159 --> 00:52:06.440
the Benoit murder suicide, which isn't surprising. It's a large

933
00:52:06.480 --> 00:52:09.760
and powerful organization with lots of lawyers, money, and influence.

934
00:52:10.079 --> 00:52:13.559
A few congressional hearings resulted from the Benoa incident, but

935
00:52:13.760 --> 00:52:16.719
there was little government pressure on the company to change.

936
00:52:17.039 --> 00:52:20.159
People cared more about the serried use and real sports

937
00:52:20.159 --> 00:52:23.119
than in pro wrestling, which no longer put much effort

938
00:52:23.119 --> 00:52:26.920
into pretending to be anything other than staged. Wrestlers are

939
00:52:26.960 --> 00:52:30.880
still classified as independent contractors and the company does not

940
00:52:30.920 --> 00:52:35.199
provide them with health insurance. Asked whether he bears responsibility

941
00:52:35.199 --> 00:52:38.320
for the poor health of his wrestlers, Vince McMahon had

942
00:52:38.360 --> 00:52:39.800
this to say, If.

943
00:52:39.679 --> 00:52:44.840
You can't cut it, get out, what's wrong with that?

944
00:52:45.000 --> 00:52:47.519
No different than any other business. By the way, you know,

945
00:52:47.639 --> 00:52:49.960
if for some reason you have to rely on drugs,

946
00:52:50.039 --> 00:52:53.079
illegal drug usage to make it, or you're going to

947
00:52:53.119 --> 00:52:54.360
self destruct.

948
00:52:54.599 --> 00:52:57.119
Do you have a reason why these people would be

949
00:52:57.199 --> 00:52:58.599
dying under the age of forty five?

950
00:52:58.880 --> 00:53:01.000
Why don't you ask yourself that question? I mean, why

951
00:53:01.159 --> 00:53:04.840
why are you indicating that's my responsibility? These people are dead?

952
00:53:04.920 --> 00:53:07.440
Because I'm asking you if it's in any way, shape

953
00:53:07.480 --> 00:53:09.840
or form falls on your shoulders.

954
00:53:10.239 --> 00:53:14.039
I would accept no responsibility whatsoever for their untimely deaths,

955
00:53:14.079 --> 00:53:17.519
none whatsoever as far as and you've got to look

956
00:53:17.519 --> 00:53:18.159
on your face.

957
00:53:18.000 --> 00:53:21.800
Left, yeah, jeez, none none, well, but none whatsoever. I mean,

958
00:53:21.840 --> 00:53:24.880
they wrestled for you. They was part of your organization.

959
00:53:25.000 --> 00:53:26.960
They had worked a couple of hundred nights a year

960
00:53:27.039 --> 00:53:30.599
for you. They live this life, stub.

961
00:53:31.079 --> 00:53:33.880
Oh my god, you can't you can't believe. What can

962
00:53:33.920 --> 00:53:35.920
you see that look? I mean, oh, how could you

963
00:53:35.960 --> 00:53:36.679
possibly say that?

964
00:53:36.760 --> 00:53:36.960
Vince?

965
00:53:37.000 --> 00:53:37.800
How can you look that way?

966
00:53:37.840 --> 00:53:38.960
And you're giving me the old sipotade.

967
00:53:39.039 --> 00:53:39.280
I'm not.

968
00:53:39.719 --> 00:53:41.280
I'm honestly curious.

969
00:53:40.920 --> 00:53:44.960
Because I told you these individuals work for organization at

970
00:53:44.960 --> 00:53:49.320
one time, they also worked for other organizations. I'm not

971
00:53:49.400 --> 00:53:52.440
responsible for the way the business was then. Was it

972
00:53:52.559 --> 00:53:54.639
responsible for the way the business? How they grow up

973
00:53:54.679 --> 00:53:57.639
and grew up in the business, and whatever personal bad

974
00:53:57.679 --> 00:54:00.440
habits they developed? Why am I respondful that I gave

975
00:54:00.480 --> 00:54:01.400
them the opportunity?

976
00:54:01.480 --> 00:54:02.840
Well, you, rant, I.

977
00:54:03.840 --> 00:54:04.960
Ran one organization.

978
00:54:05.320 --> 00:54:07.119
You controlled the biggest organization.

979
00:54:07.320 --> 00:54:09.000
I don't think we were the biggest at that time.

980
00:54:09.079 --> 00:54:13.599
Quite frankly, okay, we're the sole surviving organization now. But

981
00:54:13.679 --> 00:54:16.159
as far as looking back on all of this. These

982
00:54:16.159 --> 00:54:22.119
individuals developed a lot of bad habits. That's not my responsibility.

983
00:54:22.320 --> 00:54:25.360
Wow, isn't that a horror step up? Vince, Yeah, talk

984
00:54:25.400 --> 00:54:26.519
about passing the buck.

985
00:54:27.559 --> 00:54:30.840
That wrestling sound that you heard was Vince McMahon slapping

986
00:54:30.840 --> 00:54:34.079
the interviewers papers out of his hands. That clip was

987
00:54:34.079 --> 00:54:36.840
from two thousand and three, but Vince's attitude didn't change

988
00:54:36.960 --> 00:54:41.360
much after then. Christ Nowinsky, a former college football player,

989
00:54:41.519 --> 00:54:45.920
former professional wrestler, and Harvard graduate, is a co founder

990
00:54:45.960 --> 00:54:50.920
and CEO of Concussion Legacy Foundation. After he suffered from

991
00:54:51.000 --> 00:54:54.400
post concussion syndrome, he left the world of wrestling and

992
00:54:54.480 --> 00:54:57.920
has made it his life's work to prevent and treat concussions.

993
00:54:58.440 --> 00:55:01.639
Being an athlete gives him a nique perspective. He is

994
00:55:01.679 --> 00:55:06.280
a neuroscientist who studies CTE and its effects on professional athletes.

995
00:55:06.760 --> 00:55:10.360
After Chris Benoaugh's death, he remembered a conversation that he'd

996
00:55:10.440 --> 00:55:13.599
had with him about concussions. Chris told him that he'd

997
00:55:13.639 --> 00:55:17.440
had more concussions than he could count. He expressed interest

998
00:55:17.440 --> 00:55:20.360
in being part of the study. Nowinsky reached out to

999
00:55:20.400 --> 00:55:23.960
the Benoit family and asked to study Chris's brain. Michael

1000
00:55:24.000 --> 00:55:27.079
Benoit was more than happy to cooperate to get some answers.

1001
00:55:27.440 --> 00:55:30.719
He'd been in great pain since losing Chris, Nancy, and Daniel,

1002
00:55:31.360 --> 00:55:34.199
and the results were shocking. Chris's brain was compared to

1003
00:55:34.199 --> 00:55:38.199
that of an eighty five year old Alzheimer's patient. Newinsky

1004
00:55:38.280 --> 00:55:40.880
said that Chris's brain was actually the worst that he'd

1005
00:55:40.880 --> 00:55:45.679
ever seen. CTE continues to spread progress and deteriorate the

1006
00:55:45.719 --> 00:55:49.480
brain even after the trigger in this case wrestling is removed.

1007
00:55:49.960 --> 00:55:53.000
There is no cure. It changes who you are, how

1008
00:55:53.039 --> 00:55:54.679
you behave, and what you become.

1009
00:55:55.440 --> 00:55:58.480
Yeah, I mean, I've seen the slides on Chris Benoi's

1010
00:55:58.480 --> 00:56:01.960
brain like he had ct Like there's no question about that.

1011
00:56:02.920 --> 00:56:05.519
CTE is a disease you can see very clearly under

1012
00:56:05.519 --> 00:56:10.280
a microscope. But everybody has fought us on this. The

1013
00:56:10.400 --> 00:56:13.440
NFL's fought us on this, the NHL is still fighting

1014
00:56:13.480 --> 00:56:17.360
us on this. Fifus fightings. Everybody is trying to fight us.

1015
00:56:18.760 --> 00:56:21.920
So I was actually surprised when I got a call

1016
00:56:21.960 --> 00:56:24.039
from vincick Man say he wanted to help.

1017
00:56:24.559 --> 00:56:25.280
Then that was.

1018
00:56:25.280 --> 00:56:28.760
The beginning of a wholesale change in their approach to this.

1019
00:56:30.280 --> 00:56:33.000
They invited me in to come start teaching the wrestlers

1020
00:56:33.000 --> 00:56:35.159
about what I knew about concussions and CTE.

1021
00:56:35.800 --> 00:56:38.679
During Chris Newinsky's TED Talk, he talked about the first

1022
00:56:38.760 --> 00:56:43.119
one hundred eleven brains of x NFL players that were studied.

1023
00:56:43.679 --> 00:56:46.519
One hundred and ten out of one hundred and eleven

1024
00:56:46.719 --> 00:56:51.079
had CTE and forty eight out of fifty five ex

1025
00:56:51.119 --> 00:56:56.480
college football players had it. But even with verifiable scientific evidence,

1026
00:56:56.519 --> 00:57:01.079
some wrestlers still don't believe CTE is real. Here's stone

1027
00:57:01.079 --> 00:57:02.079
cold Steve Austin.

1028
00:57:02.480 --> 00:57:04.800
I worked for a long time. I got dropped on

1029
00:57:04.880 --> 00:57:07.159
my head one time, I got concussion there, but other

1030
00:57:07.280 --> 00:57:10.039
than that, I can't remember having too many concussions. And

1031
00:57:10.079 --> 00:57:12.880
the business of pro wrestling, and my take on that

1032
00:57:13.000 --> 00:57:15.719
has always been, if you were just wrestling and you

1033
00:57:15.760 --> 00:57:18.800
got a bunch of concussions, you're probably doing something wrong.

1034
00:57:19.599 --> 00:57:24.679
I'm not a CTE guy. Just don't believe in it.

1035
00:57:27.400 --> 00:57:30.159
Just don't believe in it. Must not be there, can't

1036
00:57:30.199 --> 00:57:30.599
see it.

1037
00:57:30.960 --> 00:57:32.679
I guess what you have there is some good old

1038
00:57:32.760 --> 00:57:36.760
fashioned toxic masculinity. I mean, just because he didn't have

1039
00:57:37.079 --> 00:57:40.480
concussions doesn't mean no one else had them. It's that

1040
00:57:40.559 --> 00:57:43.280
kind of logic or lack of logic. Is Madden, Yes,

1041
00:57:43.280 --> 00:57:46.119
it is. There have been a few positive changes to

1042
00:57:46.159 --> 00:57:49.360
the WWE. Chairs to the head, for example, are no

1043
00:57:49.400 --> 00:57:54.119
longer allowed. Blading isn't a common practice anymore due to

1044
00:57:54.440 --> 00:57:58.679
the WWE's transition to a TVPG rating.

1045
00:57:58.960 --> 00:58:01.960
Blating is thecice of like taking a razor blade and

1046
00:58:01.960 --> 00:58:03.880
cutting your forehead to get blood.

1047
00:58:04.320 --> 00:58:07.719
The new leadership is less controversial and hopefully more supportive

1048
00:58:07.760 --> 00:58:11.199
of the wrestlers. Vince retired after he was accused of

1049
00:58:11.280 --> 00:58:15.239
sex trafficking and the company's sponsorship deals were put at risk.

1050
00:58:16.159 --> 00:58:19.840
Just today, actually Friday, January tenth, Vince was fined one

1051
00:58:19.840 --> 00:58:24.679
point seven million dollars for his whole scandal.

1052
00:58:24.800 --> 00:58:25.679
Oh really yeah.

1053
00:58:26.760 --> 00:58:30.320
Chris, Nancy, and Daniel are survived by their families. Martina

1054
00:58:30.519 --> 00:58:32.559
did her best to stay out of the spotlight after

1055
00:58:32.599 --> 00:58:35.519
the incident. Chris warmed her, but she didn't give them

1056
00:58:35.559 --> 00:58:38.119
much to work with. All she said in the aftermath

1057
00:58:38.440 --> 00:58:41.960
was that Chris was the most loving person anyone could imagine.

1058
00:58:42.360 --> 00:58:45.840
She did not answer any more questions after that. Her

1059
00:58:45.880 --> 00:58:49.079
two children, David and Meghan, are alive, and while David

1060
00:58:49.119 --> 00:58:51.599
is in his early thirties and Megan is in her

1061
00:58:51.679 --> 00:58:55.119
late twenties, Megan has opted out of a public life,

1062
00:58:55.119 --> 00:58:57.960
but David is going in a different direction. A few

1063
00:58:58.039 --> 00:59:00.639
years ago, he agreed to do an interview with YouTuber

1064
00:59:00.719 --> 00:59:04.599
and TV personality who specialized in interviewing pro wrestlers. It's

1065
00:59:04.760 --> 00:59:07.400
a difficult video to watch, and David still clearly has

1066
00:59:07.440 --> 00:59:10.840
a lot of unresolved emotional trauma surrounding the fates of

1067
00:59:10.840 --> 00:59:13.599
his father and his half brother. David is the spinning

1068
00:59:13.639 --> 00:59:16.840
image of his father, and he still idolizes him. One

1069
00:59:16.840 --> 00:59:19.480
of the most tragic details of this entire story is

1070
00:59:19.480 --> 00:59:22.000
that even after all of this, David still wants to

1071
00:59:22.000 --> 00:59:25.599
follow in his dad's footsteps and become a professional wrestler. Wow,

1072
00:59:26.000 --> 00:59:28.960
he just kind of hangs out in the wrestling circles

1073
00:59:29.000 --> 00:59:31.639
and I think people like, I think the wrestlers. He's

1074
00:59:31.679 --> 00:59:33.679
a good kid and people like to have him around.

1075
00:59:33.800 --> 00:59:36.639
And Yeah, that's still surprising though, that you'd want to

1076
00:59:36.679 --> 00:59:36.960
do that.

1077
00:59:37.639 --> 00:59:37.760
Well.

1078
00:59:37.840 --> 00:59:41.559
Rest in peace to Chris, Nancy and Daniel. Nancy Benois's

1079
00:59:41.599 --> 00:59:45.519
contributions to wrestling remain significant, though her life and career

1080
00:59:45.639 --> 00:59:48.960
are often overshadowed by the tragic circumstances of her death.

1081
00:59:49.440 --> 00:59:52.159
She has remembered for her charisma, talent and influence in

1082
00:59:52.199 --> 00:59:55.599
shaping the roles of women in professional wrestling. Fans and

1083
00:59:55.639 --> 00:59:58.400
industry insiders have called for her to be recognized in

1084
00:59:58.440 --> 01:00:01.880
the WWE Hall of Fame, but so far she has

1085
01:00:01.920 --> 01:00:05.679
not been admitted. Daniel Benoit was a loved little boy

1086
01:00:05.760 --> 01:00:08.719
who idolized his father. He deserved so much more time

1087
01:00:08.760 --> 01:00:11.199
on this earth. It's really hard to talk about the

1088
01:00:11.239 --> 01:00:14.519
death of Chris because I am an overly empathetic person,

1089
01:00:14.880 --> 01:00:19.519
and that can be problematic in situations like this, because yeah,

1090
01:00:19.639 --> 01:00:22.239
I mean, it's it's really conflicting because I do believe

1091
01:00:22.280 --> 01:00:28.239
that he had CTE and that affected him in ways

1092
01:00:28.280 --> 01:00:29.920
that I don't think we can really understand.

1093
01:00:30.159 --> 01:00:33.119
Yeah, it is really tricky because he obviously did a horrible,

1094
01:00:33.280 --> 01:00:36.119
horrible thing. But at the same time, I think his

1095
01:00:36.280 --> 01:00:41.400
behavior was definitely influenced by his problems in his brain,

1096
01:00:41.559 --> 01:00:44.800
and that was But you know, it's hard because the

1097
01:00:44.840 --> 01:00:47.440
problems in his brain was also caused by some of

1098
01:00:47.480 --> 01:00:50.639
the choices he made. But he, you know, he didn't

1099
01:00:50.679 --> 01:00:53.320
know what wrestling was going to do to him, and

1100
01:00:53.360 --> 01:00:56.039
I'm sure he didn't when he was taking the steroids.

1101
01:00:56.079 --> 01:00:58.719
He you know, wasn't thinking about the effect that would

1102
01:00:58.760 --> 01:00:59.280
have on him.

1103
01:00:59.320 --> 01:01:01.519
So we read a couple of phrases that really, I

1104
01:01:01.559 --> 01:01:05.000
think summed up pretty well. He is unforgettable as a wrestler,

1105
01:01:05.000 --> 01:01:09.119
but unforgivable as a human being. He shouldn't be remembered,

1106
01:01:09.119 --> 01:01:13.280
but he can't be forgotten. So Chris. Every wrestler has

1107
01:01:13.360 --> 01:01:17.800
walkout music, and Chris was a song called whatever by

1108
01:01:18.119 --> 01:01:21.159
Canadian rockers Our Lady of Peace. Do you want to

1109
01:01:21.199 --> 01:01:21.880
read it for us?

1110
01:01:22.000 --> 01:01:25.519
Sure? There's no holding me back. I'm not driven by fear.

1111
01:01:25.599 --> 01:01:28.760
I'm just driven by anger and you're under attack. I'm

1112
01:01:28.840 --> 01:01:31.840
just climbing up slowly. I'm the one and only and

1113
01:01:31.960 --> 01:01:34.760
the teas, the ways, the lies stumble in your mind,

1114
01:01:35.039 --> 01:01:38.519
the fear of the hope inside. They hit here, hit here.

1115
01:01:39.480 --> 01:01:42.159
After the murder suicide, Our Lady Peace removed the song

1116
01:01:42.239 --> 01:01:44.840
from their catalog and have never performed the music again.

1117
01:01:44.960 --> 01:01:48.199
Oh wow, Chris's son, David wants him to be in

1118
01:01:48.239 --> 01:01:49.880
the Hall of Fame. What do you think about that?

1119
01:01:50.639 --> 01:01:51.480
I don't don't think.

1120
01:01:51.480 --> 01:01:54.440
I don't think it can ever happen. Do you think

1121
01:01:54.440 --> 01:01:57.280
that Chris's behavior was attributable to steroids?

1122
01:01:58.079 --> 01:02:01.639
I mean, I'm not a doctor, but I my guess

1123
01:02:01.719 --> 01:02:05.480
is that it's a combination of steroids and you know,

1124
01:02:05.559 --> 01:02:09.000
the physical punishment he took in the ring and the

1125
01:02:09.039 --> 01:02:12.199
concussions and the you know, beatings to his head and

1126
01:02:12.239 --> 01:02:14.719
things like that. I think it's probably the combination of

1127
01:02:14.760 --> 01:02:16.440
those things. But who knows.

1128
01:02:16.719 --> 01:02:18.440
I mean, he had been on steroids. He was forty

1129
01:02:18.519 --> 01:02:21.039
years old when he passed away, so he'd been on

1130
01:02:21.159 --> 01:02:24.920
steroids at least for twenty two years. He started really young, yeah,

1131
01:02:24.960 --> 01:02:26.880
when he was in high school, probably when he was sixteen,

1132
01:02:26.920 --> 01:02:29.960
but I'm not sure exactly when he started. So do

1133
01:02:30.000 --> 01:02:31.599
you think that as time goes on, do you need

1134
01:02:31.639 --> 01:02:32.440
more steroids?

1135
01:02:33.480 --> 01:02:35.079
Again, I don't know. I'm not a doctor, but I

1136
01:02:35.079 --> 01:02:38.039
think with most drugs, you develop a tolerance over time

1137
01:02:38.079 --> 01:02:39.760
and you need more and more to get We know,

1138
01:02:39.800 --> 01:02:40.679
the same fact.

1139
01:02:40.559 --> 01:02:44.840
Didn't produce testosterone naturally anymore, so I guess he would

1140
01:02:44.920 --> 01:02:49.039
probably have had to have increased his uptake of steroids.

1141
01:02:49.119 --> 01:02:49.400
Yeah.

1142
01:02:49.440 --> 01:02:49.880
Probably.

1143
01:02:51.159 --> 01:02:55.039
Hearing this case makes me think about like the responsibility

1144
01:02:55.239 --> 01:02:58.760
of people fans of sports, like do you know, because

1145
01:02:58.800 --> 01:03:01.199
I'm a big football fan, right, but I know that

1146
01:03:01.280 --> 01:03:04.960
there are issues in football as well, with CTE and

1147
01:03:05.000 --> 01:03:07.199
stuff like that. So it makes me feel a little

1148
01:03:07.360 --> 01:03:10.000
bad about watching the sport. And I don't do you

1149
01:03:10.000 --> 01:03:12.519
think fans like because we're the ones who are paying

1150
01:03:12.719 --> 01:03:16.840
ultimately for these athletes to do what they do. So

1151
01:03:16.880 --> 01:03:20.119
it just makes me wonder if we should bear some responsibility.

1152
01:03:20.280 --> 01:03:22.239
Well, I don't want to act like I'm morally superior,

1153
01:03:22.320 --> 01:03:24.639
but I kind of did stop watching football a few

1154
01:03:24.719 --> 01:03:27.280
years ago because I just it did bother me every

1155
01:03:27.280 --> 01:03:30.800
time I saw a hard hit. Knowing about ct CT

1156
01:03:31.159 --> 01:03:35.760
is still, you know, pretty new discovery.

1157
01:03:35.360 --> 01:03:37.599
Right, But just the fact that you can look at

1158
01:03:37.599 --> 01:03:40.599
somebody's brain and say, you know that it is comparable

1159
01:03:40.679 --> 01:03:44.320
to an eighty five year old Alzheimer's patient when somebody

1160
01:03:44.400 --> 01:03:46.440
is forty years old or something like that.

1161
01:03:46.480 --> 01:03:49.119
It's just so the only way you can diagnose CTE

1162
01:03:49.519 --> 01:03:51.800
is also post mortal, right.

1163
01:03:52.000 --> 01:03:53.000
Yeah.

1164
01:03:53.039 --> 01:03:55.360
I listen to a lot of Chris Nowinsky's talks, and

1165
01:03:55.400 --> 01:03:58.199
I would encourage any parents of young athletes to go

1166
01:03:58.280 --> 01:04:01.280
listen to him talk. The more games you play, the

1167
01:04:01.280 --> 01:04:04.440
more hits you take to your head, the greater your

1168
01:04:04.920 --> 01:04:06.440
chance of developing CTE.

1169
01:04:06.719 --> 01:04:06.800
Is.

1170
01:04:07.280 --> 01:04:09.599
If you just play high school football, you know you

1171
01:04:09.800 --> 01:04:12.159
probably would be okay unless you take a ton of

1172
01:04:12.199 --> 01:04:14.440
hits to the head. But you know, if you are

1173
01:04:14.480 --> 01:04:17.159
playing in the NFL or you're playing in college football,

1174
01:04:17.199 --> 01:04:20.679
that's when your odds are increased. And I mentioned early

1175
01:04:20.760 --> 01:04:22.840
on in episode one that Chris had been in a

1176
01:04:22.840 --> 01:04:25.639
bad car accident when he was six years old. It's like,

1177
01:04:26.119 --> 01:04:28.559
you don't know with the brain, like you know, whin

1178
01:04:28.639 --> 01:04:31.360
those injuries might come back again.

1179
01:04:31.639 --> 01:04:33.920
He used to work with a guy who played college football,

1180
01:04:33.960 --> 01:04:36.400
and he played. He actually played one year in the NFL.

1181
01:04:37.280 --> 01:04:40.280
And after his first year in the NFL, he actually

1182
01:04:40.519 --> 01:04:42.360
he was with his daughter and he slipped and fell

1183
01:04:42.400 --> 01:04:44.199
on the ice and hit his head and he got

1184
01:04:44.440 --> 01:04:48.119
a concussion. And he had had other concussions in his

1185
01:04:48.360 --> 01:04:51.800
football career as well, and the doctor told him, like,

1186
01:04:51.840 --> 01:04:54.519
if you get another concussion, you might die or you

1187
01:04:54.599 --> 01:04:56.360
may not ever be the same again. And so he

1188
01:04:56.440 --> 01:04:57.800
quit because of that.

1189
01:04:57.840 --> 01:04:59.320
And it's I mean, it's hard to quit.

1190
01:04:59.400 --> 01:05:02.119
Oh yeah, it's why. Yeah, you're you know, on the

1191
01:05:02.239 --> 01:05:04.039
on the track to make millions of dollars.

1192
01:05:04.159 --> 01:05:05.440
So well, do you.

1193
01:05:05.400 --> 01:05:08.199
Remember when our sons started playing tackle football when he

1194
01:05:08.360 --> 01:05:12.679
was in third grade and they started a program that

1195
01:05:12.960 --> 01:05:17.199
was like the kids weren't supposed to tackle head first.

1196
01:05:17.559 --> 01:05:19.840
Yeah, they taught him very much the technique, the right

1197
01:05:19.880 --> 01:05:21.039
technique for tackling.

1198
01:05:21.159 --> 01:05:24.559
Yeah, so hopefully, you know, kids are learning that more.

1199
01:05:24.639 --> 01:05:26.800
And it's just hard though, Like when you're in a

1200
01:05:26.840 --> 01:05:29.800
professional football you're flying around so fast on the field

1201
01:05:29.880 --> 01:05:32.519
that you know you can all you want, You can

1202
01:05:32.519 --> 01:05:34.679
try to tackle the right way, but there are gonna

1203
01:05:34.719 --> 01:05:37.400
be situations where you collide with other players or hit

1204
01:05:37.400 --> 01:05:39.760
each other in an unnatural way. So I don't I

1205
01:05:39.760 --> 01:05:42.840
don't feel like there's a way to completely eliminate this.

1206
01:05:42.840 --> 01:05:46.960
From so many sports, and wrestling is is was pretty unregulated.

1207
01:05:47.000 --> 01:05:49.519
I think it's gotten a little better, but you've got

1208
01:05:49.599 --> 01:05:53.000
soccer and and rugby and there's a lot of contact sports.

1209
01:05:53.400 --> 01:05:55.639
Yeah for sure, like soccer with all the head you know,

1210
01:05:55.719 --> 01:05:58.360
heading the ball with your head. That can't be good

1211
01:05:58.480 --> 01:05:59.039
for your brain.

1212
01:05:59.400 --> 01:06:02.400
And well again, I think it was Kristawinsky that was

1213
01:06:02.400 --> 01:06:05.400
talking about like like they try to limit to like

1214
01:06:05.480 --> 01:06:08.400
twenty headers a week or something like that, but you know.

1215
01:06:08.360 --> 01:06:09.360
It seems like a lot.

1216
01:06:09.519 --> 01:06:18.039
Yeah, before we go, I just wanted to talk about

1217
01:06:18.079 --> 01:06:20.920
Andre the Giant for a second. You know, I'm like

1218
01:06:20.960 --> 01:06:26.000
weirdly obsessed with like big things and men that can

1219
01:06:26.199 --> 01:06:28.719
lift lots of weight, like what's the thing of the

1220
01:06:29.039 --> 01:06:35.320
strong man? Yeah, yeah, I love those. So Andre the giant.

1221
01:06:35.559 --> 01:06:37.480
If you don't know, like I remember watching him as

1222
01:06:37.480 --> 01:06:40.480
a kid, it's just crazy to think, like, if you

1223
01:06:40.519 --> 01:06:44.320
see him next to almost anyone, he looks he's really

1224
01:06:44.360 --> 01:06:49.039
really large. His true height is measured somewhere between seven

1225
01:06:49.119 --> 01:06:52.679
feet two inches and seven feet four inches, and his

1226
01:06:52.719 --> 01:06:57.119
weight fluctuated between I think five and six hundred pounds.

1227
01:06:57.400 --> 01:07:00.000
It's a big guy. And I saw videos of like

1228
01:07:00.119 --> 01:07:02.800
Whull Coogan taking him down, but I guess it was

1229
01:07:02.800 --> 01:07:05.239
probably wrestlers, like we talked about this, used their own

1230
01:07:05.280 --> 01:07:08.599
momentum kind of so I think Andre kind of helped

1231
01:07:08.639 --> 01:07:11.280
him up, helped him a little bit. But just a

1232
01:07:11.360 --> 01:07:15.679
really interesting guy. He could drink. Guess how many beers

1233
01:07:15.719 --> 01:07:16.320
he could drink.

1234
01:07:16.400 --> 01:07:18.880
I've read this once before and I can't remember the number,

1235
01:07:18.920 --> 01:07:21.360
but it was it was kind of shocking. I do

1236
01:07:21.480 --> 01:07:21.880
remember that.

1237
01:07:22.039 --> 01:07:26.039
Just take a guess thirty. I don't know the exact number,

1238
01:07:26.039 --> 01:07:28.280
but I think it was at least one hundred and fifteen.

1239
01:07:28.599 --> 01:07:30.519
Oh my god, one hundred and fifteen.

1240
01:07:30.920 --> 01:07:31.840
That's insane.

1241
01:07:31.960 --> 01:07:34.639
I watched a clip of him on Letterman like this

1242
01:07:34.800 --> 01:07:38.000
was year, like long, like when Letterman was first starting

1243
01:07:38.440 --> 01:07:41.159
and he was talking about how you know, he was

1244
01:07:41.239 --> 01:07:44.239
drinking too much, and he kind of stopped drinking the beer,

1245
01:07:44.320 --> 01:07:46.360
but it was kind of like a party trick where

1246
01:07:46.360 --> 01:07:50.480
he was just like, you know, keep drinking and mirror

1247
01:07:50.480 --> 01:07:51.519
mortals couldn't keep.

1248
01:07:51.480 --> 01:07:53.039
Up with him. Oh, no, for sure.

1249
01:07:53.360 --> 01:07:56.039
And then there was The Princess Bride, which oddly you

1250
01:07:56.320 --> 01:07:58.480
hate that movie, which you're going to get in that.

1251
01:07:58.840 --> 01:08:01.559
Yeah he was Yeah, he played the Giant, and he

1252
01:08:01.719 --> 01:08:04.679
was in The six Million Dollar Man and he played Sasquatch.

1253
01:08:06.639 --> 01:08:09.800
He could walk into a restaurant and consume guess how

1254
01:08:09.800 --> 01:08:11.039
many steaks he could consume.

1255
01:08:11.119 --> 01:08:14.440
Oh I'm sure I'm going to be short, but twenty five.

1256
01:08:14.679 --> 01:08:20.960
Twelve steaks and fifteen lobsters in a single sitting. I

1257
01:08:21.000 --> 01:08:23.199
was to posed a picture of him, but like he

1258
01:08:23.840 --> 01:08:26.600
with his hand in it with a can of beer

1259
01:08:26.680 --> 01:08:29.039
in it. It just looks so funny. He liked to

1260
01:08:29.039 --> 01:08:31.640
play cards, and I saw a picture of him playing cards,

1261
01:08:31.680 --> 01:08:34.680
and it's just like the cards just look like, you know,

1262
01:08:34.800 --> 01:08:39.000
like little baby cards. Anyway, just a really interesting guy,

1263
01:08:39.039 --> 01:08:41.119
and I think he had a lot of pain and

1264
01:08:41.159 --> 01:08:44.039
discomfort because he was so big and he traveled all

1265
01:08:44.079 --> 01:08:47.680
the time and he couldn't like go into an airplane

1266
01:08:47.760 --> 01:08:51.800
bathroom because he was just too big. And yeah, yeah,

1267
01:08:51.920 --> 01:08:55.119
I think his life was pretty challenging. But before we go,

1268
01:08:55.199 --> 01:08:57.159
the very last thing, I'm going to give you thirty

1269
01:08:57.159 --> 01:08:58.640
seconds to talk about the Lions.

1270
01:08:59.479 --> 01:09:01.560
Oh yeah, yeah, the Lions. That's there.

1271
01:09:01.760 --> 01:09:03.720
Well wait, it's your podcast. You can take as much

1272
01:09:03.760 --> 01:09:05.800
time as you want. I should, I shouldn't have limited time.

1273
01:09:05.960 --> 01:09:07.640
You take two hours if you want to, right, leave

1274
01:09:07.680 --> 01:09:08.039
the room.

1275
01:09:08.119 --> 01:09:09.560
All right, well, let's go. Let's get started.

1276
01:09:09.720 --> 01:09:12.159
We are a week like, we are recording this a

1277
01:09:12.199 --> 01:09:12.760
week ahead.

1278
01:09:12.880 --> 01:09:17.119
So yeah, so we are. So the regular season has ended.

1279
01:09:17.640 --> 01:09:20.680
The Lions finished the best season in their entire history

1280
01:09:20.760 --> 01:09:22.720
of like I don't know, one hundred plus years they've

1281
01:09:22.720 --> 01:09:26.079
been around. So they finished fifteen into number one seed

1282
01:09:26.239 --> 01:09:28.880
in the NFC, which means that they have a bye week,

1283
01:09:28.920 --> 01:09:32.199
they don't play this weekend, they'll have home field advantage

1284
01:09:32.199 --> 01:09:36.279
throughout the playoffs. So I would say they are definitely

1285
01:09:36.319 --> 01:09:39.560
the top pick to make the Super Bowl this year.

1286
01:09:39.600 --> 01:09:41.600
But wow, do you think they'll play.

1287
01:09:41.720 --> 01:09:43.680
The Kansas City Chiefs? Is probably going to be the

1288
01:09:43.760 --> 01:09:46.359
Lions and the Chiefs, or could be the Buffalo Bills,

1289
01:09:46.359 --> 01:09:49.079
but you know, who knows anything can happen in the playoffs.

1290
01:09:49.119 --> 01:09:51.800
But it's exciting for all of us Lions fans who

1291
01:09:51.840 --> 01:09:55.560
have just been like suffering through many many years.

1292
01:09:55.640 --> 01:09:58.600
Yeah, you and you did suffer well as.

1293
01:09:58.479 --> 01:10:01.159
Always, Thank you all for listening. Appreciate it so much.

Inside damn, let's take back again.

1302
01:11:23.520 --> 01:11:26.239
It's hard to know the exact reason behind Chris is self.

1303
01:11:26.079 --> 01:11:30.960
If that's the blip, I need my battery charged.
