Sheri Coleman, 31, and her two sons, Garrett, 11, and Gavin, 9, were found brutally murdered in their home in Columbia, Illinois on the morning of May 5, 2009. Chris Coleman, 32, Sheri’s husband and the boys father, worked as televangelist Joyce Meyer’s head of security. He’d been receiving threatening messages from an unknown source warning him his family would be killed if he didn’t quit his job with the ministry. As the investigation unfolded, investigators learned that Chris Coleman was having an extramarital affair with his wife’s high school best friend, Tara. Was Chris’ family murdered by an unknown intruder or was it an elaborately planned scheme to start a new life?

00:00:00.200 --> 00:00:02.839
Hi. I'm Tina, and I'm
Rich. And if there's one thing we've

2
00:00:02.919 --> 00:00:06.080
learned in over twenty years of marriage, it's that some days you'll feel like

3
00:00:06.160 --> 00:00:09.960
killing your wife, and some days
you'll feel like killing your husband. Welcome

4
00:00:10.119 --> 00:00:28.440
to love, Mary Kill, Hey
Rich, Hey Tina. How are you

5
00:00:28.960 --> 00:00:31.879
doing pretty good? How are you? I'm great, great and great.

6
00:00:32.640 --> 00:00:36.880
I did want to give a little
warning though. Today's episode contains course language,

7
00:00:36.960 --> 00:00:41.640
adult themes, and violence against women
and children, so please listen with

8
00:00:41.719 --> 00:00:46.119
care. I will. It's kind
of a rough one. Yeah, yeah,

9
00:00:46.159 --> 00:00:49.560
but like I usually try to do, I don't go too it's not

10
00:00:49.640 --> 00:00:54.799
too graphics. Okay, are you
gonna You're gonna stick around? I think

11
00:00:54.840 --> 00:00:58.000
I will? Yeah, I do
have a choice. You know, you

12
00:00:58.039 --> 00:01:03.560
almost made me leave the room.
I accidentally said let her rip when we

13
00:01:03.599 --> 00:01:15.640
were about to start, and you
did. H Our friend Cosmo isn't here.

14
00:01:15.480 --> 00:01:18.920
Why isn't he here? You know? He usually just sits right on

15
00:01:19.040 --> 00:01:22.599
the bean bag chair in this room? Is about something. I think he's

16
00:01:22.599 --> 00:01:26.439
on strike because we ran out of
chu Ru. If you have a cat

17
00:01:26.480 --> 00:01:30.040
and your cat doesn't eat Chu Rou, you might went to or c h

18
00:01:30.159 --> 00:01:33.920
u are you? We usually get
it on Amazon. I love it.

19
00:01:34.079 --> 00:01:37.680
I love it. It's really and
we haven't had it for a couple of

20
00:01:37.760 --> 00:01:41.280
days, and he has a little
salty. Yeah. I don't blame him,

21
00:01:41.319 --> 00:01:42.920
okay, with him not being here, I'm a little mad at him.

22
00:01:44.239 --> 00:01:47.640
Every night for the last week.
He torments you. He does.

23
00:01:48.040 --> 00:01:51.159
He just loves you so much.
He's coming up the stairs right now,

24
00:01:51.519 --> 00:01:56.359
and talk about him. He's here. He did someone say? True?

25
00:01:56.799 --> 00:02:00.920
It did it? Did? It
was delivered today? Yes, it's so

26
00:02:00.959 --> 00:02:05.159
funny. You just came up.
Are you looking forward to having the house

27
00:02:05.200 --> 00:02:07.360
to yourself for the next two weeks? If only I had the house?

28
00:02:07.639 --> 00:02:10.719
I guess, not completely to yourself. But I'll be gone. I mean,

29
00:02:10.919 --> 00:02:14.879
I don't mind when you travel.
It's a little weird for you to

30
00:02:14.879 --> 00:02:17.280
be gone almost two weeks. It's
weird that you're going to be You're going

31
00:02:17.360 --> 00:02:22.400
to completely miss Easter. I know
that is kind of weird. Yeah,

32
00:02:22.479 --> 00:02:24.599
So I mean that's yeah. But
I hope you have a good trip.

33
00:02:24.680 --> 00:02:28.159
I hope you're safe. I hope
you bring me back some good snacks.

34
00:02:28.439 --> 00:02:30.120
Yeah, I plan to. Are
you staying. I know you're going to

35
00:02:30.159 --> 00:02:34.919
Paris and then you're going to London. Are you staying in just two different

36
00:02:34.919 --> 00:02:39.439
places? Yeah, multiple hotels unfortunately, Okay, because I get there,

37
00:02:39.479 --> 00:02:43.000
I get to Paris on Monday that
I've got a hotel, and then we

38
00:02:43.039 --> 00:02:46.960
have an off site meeting at some
cool chateau thing, and then I'm going

39
00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:52.479
to London on Good Friday, and
then I'll be in London over the weekend

40
00:02:52.520 --> 00:02:55.199
and then meetings the following week.
Yeah. Well, hopefully you can check

41
00:02:55.199 --> 00:03:00.560
in on Kate. I will Kate, I'll make Yeah. I hope she's

42
00:03:00.599 --> 00:03:02.759
doing Okay, I know that was
heartbreaking. Yeah, hey, I brought

43
00:03:02.759 --> 00:03:07.840
you a snack. Oh you did? Yeah, what was surprised. There's

44
00:03:07.879 --> 00:03:10.879
some grapes right there, some nice
bright green grapes. I like grapes.

45
00:03:10.960 --> 00:03:14.000
I know. There you go.
Can you see him there? I can't.

46
00:03:15.120 --> 00:03:22.319
Oh okay, yeah, that's grapes, green grapes. By all right,

47
00:03:23.199 --> 00:03:27.520
I did make you something. I
told you to temper your expectations because

48
00:03:27.599 --> 00:03:30.919
I kind of forgot because I was
really busy. So we're trying to work

49
00:03:30.960 --> 00:03:34.120
ahead, so we're kind of making
a lot of content this last week.

50
00:03:34.159 --> 00:03:38.560
But I made you snack mix.
Oh okay, I made you ranch.

51
00:03:38.879 --> 00:03:43.120
Usually you can do this. Everyone
out there has probably made this at some

52
00:03:43.159 --> 00:03:47.599
point, But it's like spicy ranch
crackers. You take ranch and a couple

53
00:03:47.639 --> 00:03:53.800
packages of ranch and some dill weed
and garlic and onion salt, and you

54
00:03:53.879 --> 00:03:57.599
have made it so much oil.
I haven't made it in a while because

55
00:03:58.240 --> 00:04:00.719
I just I'm the only one hitting
you eat. But this time, lick.

56
00:04:00.759 --> 00:04:03.800
What the fun things I put in
there? Can you see? Kind

57
00:04:03.800 --> 00:04:10.360
of? Yeah, we usually have
a pretty pretty full snack pantry, so

58
00:04:10.400 --> 00:04:15.520
there's bugles and cheese. It's and
I put some pretzels in there. I

59
00:04:15.520 --> 00:04:19.519
put some mini club crackers and there
are some oyster crackers too, like Tina's

60
00:04:19.560 --> 00:04:25.560
own check spicks. You know,
I love an empty calorie. Do you

61
00:04:25.560 --> 00:04:28.240
want to take a quick break and
try this? Yeah? For sure?

62
00:04:33.720 --> 00:04:36.199
Well that was really good? Oh
you liked that good? I did?

63
00:04:36.360 --> 00:04:41.319
Yeah. I wish I would have
put more red pepper flakes in it to

64
00:04:41.319 --> 00:04:43.800
make it a little spicier. But
I think it's perfect. I think it's

65
00:04:43.839 --> 00:04:46.600
good. Yeah. I did skimp
on the oil. I kind of doubled

66
00:04:46.600 --> 00:04:50.680
it. And you're supposed to use
three quarters cup of oil. Really yeah,

67
00:04:50.920 --> 00:04:54.480
like I am not using a cup
and a half of oil. I

68
00:04:54.480 --> 00:04:56.839
probably only used half a cup,
and I think it's still pretty. I

69
00:04:56.839 --> 00:05:00.279
think it's good, perfect, good, glad you like it. Watch tonight

70
00:05:00.319 --> 00:05:05.120
when you are watching the NC Double
A game. The Yeah Oakland Golden Grizzlies

71
00:05:05.160 --> 00:05:10.360
of Oakland University, your alma mater, undergrad alma mater. Yeah, they're

72
00:05:10.399 --> 00:05:14.639
in the second round of the tournament, which is unheard of. Wild.

73
00:05:15.360 --> 00:05:17.839
It was very excited for you.
Yeah, I'm not like the big into

74
00:05:17.879 --> 00:05:20.959
it. But we talked about this
on our Patreon episodes and apologize to our

75
00:05:20.959 --> 00:05:26.480
patreons, but yeah, that was
first time they've ever won an NC Double

76
00:05:26.480 --> 00:05:30.399
A tournament game. That's amazing.
Well, today, when this episode is

77
00:05:30.439 --> 00:05:33.040
released, the final game will be
on tonight. I'm guessing right. I

78
00:05:33.120 --> 00:05:36.360
think that's right. Yeah, surely
you must have her prediction. Well I

79
00:05:36.399 --> 00:05:43.000
don't, and please stop calling me. Surely, I if I had to,

80
00:05:43.279 --> 00:05:46.160
I'm not like, I'm not very
knowledgeable about college basketball. I'm very

81
00:05:46.240 --> 00:05:51.800
much a like I'll watch March Madness, but that's it. But if this

82
00:05:51.879 --> 00:05:55.399
year, yeah, they're not in
it. Kind of shocking status though.

83
00:05:55.600 --> 00:05:58.600
Yeah, Michigan State's in it,
which I don't really care about. Oakland

84
00:05:58.680 --> 00:06:01.079
University is in it. But if
I had to make a prediction. I'm

85
00:06:01.079 --> 00:06:04.879
going to say University of Connecticut.
It's a safe it's a safe prediction.

86
00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:10.120
I think who in the final game. Oh, I don't know. There's

87
00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:13.800
good I didn't look. I didn't
look closely enough in the bracket to know

88
00:06:13.839 --> 00:06:15.639
who they might be playing, which
is Zay Oakland? Okay, yeah,

89
00:06:15.720 --> 00:06:18.120
is that an university? We don't
even know if that's a possibility because it

90
00:06:18.120 --> 00:06:23.519
depends on the bracket. We really
wanted to do like a mean that we

91
00:06:23.560 --> 00:06:25.920
didn't get to it. We'll do
it next year. Yeah, I'm going

92
00:06:25.959 --> 00:06:28.879
to make you commit to doing it
next year because logistically we didn't even know

93
00:06:28.879 --> 00:06:30.399
how we would do what we were
going to do. We were going to

94
00:06:30.480 --> 00:06:35.959
call it like March meanness. I
think March monstrousness. Oh gosh, okay,

95
00:06:36.040 --> 00:06:39.160
all right, well we have a
whole year to fight about it.

96
00:06:39.399 --> 00:06:42.600
Yeah. But yeah, we're just
going to do like brackets with like the

97
00:06:42.639 --> 00:06:46.439
most horrible people that we've talked about
people. Yeah, we were both going

98
00:06:46.519 --> 00:06:49.439
to pick sixteen people, but by
next year we'll have even more. Yeah,

99
00:06:49.639 --> 00:06:55.079
we'll do sixty four. Who do
you think would win? Oh?

100
00:06:55.120 --> 00:06:59.079
Boy, there's so many horrible,
horrible people that we've talked about, maybe

101
00:06:59.160 --> 00:07:02.639
today's I was just going to say, that's a great segue, because Chris

102
00:07:02.680 --> 00:07:06.360
Coleman is right up there with the
worst people we've talked about. Yeah,

103
00:07:06.399 --> 00:07:12.120
he is kind of the original Chris
Watts. Oh yeah. Not all chris

104
00:07:12.160 --> 00:07:15.079
Is are bad, not all Peterson's
are bad, but you know, these

105
00:07:15.199 --> 00:07:18.319
these two chriss are pretty horrible.
On May fifth, two thousand and nine,

106
00:07:18.360 --> 00:07:23.560
Detective Justin Barlow was awakened by his
ringing cell phone at a quarter to

107
00:07:23.600 --> 00:07:27.560
seven in the morning in Columbia,
Illinois. He'd already been awakened once that

108
00:07:27.720 --> 00:07:30.600
night by his six month old baby. His neighbor, Chris Coleman, was

109
00:07:30.600 --> 00:07:34.399
calling. Chris couldn't get a hold
of his family, and he was worried.

110
00:07:35.040 --> 00:07:39.600
Chris's wife, Sherry, and their
two sons, Garrett eleven and Gavin,

111
00:07:39.720 --> 00:07:43.199
nine, should have been awake and
getting ready for their day by now.

112
00:07:44.040 --> 00:07:46.920
Chris had left to work out that
morning at a gym just over the

113
00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:50.319
state line in Saint Louis, Missouri. Columbia, Illinois, where the Colemans

114
00:07:50.319 --> 00:07:55.519
lived, is fifteen miles south of
Saint Louis. Chris was about ten minutes

115
00:07:55.560 --> 00:07:59.839
from his home when he made the
worried call to his neighbor. Chris Coleman

116
00:08:00.040 --> 00:08:03.519
worked for joyce Meyer Ministries as head
of security. In November, he had

117
00:08:03.519 --> 00:08:09.680
received some threatening emails. He had
also received two typewritten letters in his mailbox,

118
00:08:09.800 --> 00:08:13.800
one in January and one more recently
at the end of April. The

119
00:08:13.879 --> 00:08:18.279
messages advised Chris to quit his job
and publicly renounced joyce Meyer Ministries, or

120
00:08:18.560 --> 00:08:22.439
else his family would be killed.
He didn't comply with the threats. He

121
00:08:22.519 --> 00:08:26.639
called them a hoax. Justin was
aware of the threat to the Coleman family.

122
00:08:26.920 --> 00:08:30.879
He had told Chris to call him
if there was ever anything he could

123
00:08:30.879 --> 00:08:33.639
do to help. After the call
from Chris, he quickly dressed and left

124
00:08:33.639 --> 00:08:37.000
his house to go check on the
Colemans. He called the police station for

125
00:08:37.120 --> 00:08:41.840
backup. He rang the doorbell once
and waited. A squad car pulled up

126
00:08:41.879 --> 00:08:46.399
at six fifty three am as Justin
rang the doorbell for a second time.

127
00:08:46.879 --> 00:08:50.559
Still no answer. Justin thought Chris
should have returned home by then. From

128
00:08:50.559 --> 00:08:56.360
the bridge to the Columbia Lake Subdivision
was only seven minutes away. Wouldn't Chris

129
00:08:56.399 --> 00:08:58.759
be driving as fast as he could
to get home to his family one with

130
00:08:58.799 --> 00:09:03.320
them. I think if he was
worried about them. A uniformed officer,

131
00:09:03.519 --> 00:09:07.519
Jason don John, walked around the
house and found a basement window open with

132
00:09:07.600 --> 00:09:11.759
the screen removed. Justin joined him
at the basement window, and they decided

133
00:09:11.759 --> 00:09:15.519
to enter the house through the window. They didn't see anything amiss in the

134
00:09:15.600 --> 00:09:18.519
dark basement. The two officers crept
up the basement stairs that led to the

135
00:09:18.600 --> 00:09:24.879
kitchen, guns drawn, they detected
the sharp, acrid odor of paint on

136
00:09:24.960 --> 00:09:28.320
a wall of family photos in the
kitchen. Someone had written over them fuck

137
00:09:28.399 --> 00:09:35.480
you I'm always watching and read spray
paint. Another wall was painted with I

138
00:09:35.559 --> 00:09:39.320
saw you leave. There was yet
another message on the living room wall,

139
00:09:39.879 --> 00:09:43.399
fuck you bitch punished. A final
message painted on the wall going up the

140
00:09:43.399 --> 00:09:48.559
stairs to the second floor said you
have paid. Oh sounds ominous, m

141
00:09:48.679 --> 00:09:52.440
hmmm. A third officer, Steve
Patten, arrived at the house the same

142
00:09:52.480 --> 00:09:58.200
time as Chris Coleman at six fifty
six a m officer. Patten told Chris

143
00:09:58.240 --> 00:10:03.120
to stay outside. Freeofficers didn't find
anything out of place on the first floor

144
00:10:03.320 --> 00:10:07.200
other than the spray painted messages,
and they went up the stairs the first

145
00:10:07.279 --> 00:10:11.000
room. They encountered was eleven year
old Garrett's room. He appeared to be

146
00:10:11.080 --> 00:10:16.440
sleeping soundly with the covers pulled up
around his body, but a closer look

147
00:10:16.519 --> 00:10:20.559
revealed his complexion was gray and his
lips were blue. He appeared to have

148
00:10:20.639 --> 00:10:24.440
ligature marks around his neck, and
he was cold to the touch. Red

149
00:10:24.480 --> 00:10:28.279
spray paint stained his blanket. They
walked down the hall to find nine year

150
00:10:28.320 --> 00:10:33.559
old Gavin lying face down on his
bed, wearing Spider Man pajamas. He

151
00:10:33.639 --> 00:10:37.879
was also covered with blankets and had
red ligature marks on his neck. The

152
00:10:37.919 --> 00:10:41.759
words fuck you were spray painted on
his blanket. Both boys appeared to have

153
00:10:41.799 --> 00:10:46.600
been dead for several hours. Their
mother and Chris's wife, Sherry thirty one,

154
00:10:46.919 --> 00:10:50.720
was found in bed in the primary
bedroom. She too was dead.

155
00:10:52.360 --> 00:10:56.480
Her limbs were stiffening as rigor mortis
sat in. Her skin was mottled and

156
00:10:56.559 --> 00:11:01.320
purple, indicating that liver mortise the
pulling or settling of blood had also set

157
00:11:01.320 --> 00:11:05.840
in. Cherry had double ligature marks
around her neck, a large bruise on

158
00:11:05.879 --> 00:11:09.679
her left eye, and a less
prominent bruise on her right eye. The

159
00:11:09.720 --> 00:11:13.240
three officers were sickened and shocked by
what they saw Chris had been waiting outside

160
00:11:13.399 --> 00:11:18.200
for them, but grew impatient.
The stunt officers heard him enter the house

161
00:11:18.200 --> 00:11:22.000
and yell, what's going on?
How were they going to break the horrible

162
00:11:22.039 --> 00:11:26.240
news to this poor man that they
had failed him and some sick person had

163
00:11:26.320 --> 00:11:30.720
killed his beautiful family. Well,
you already kind of gave the spoiler of

164
00:11:31.120 --> 00:11:35.159
who might be responsible for this,
But that's really horrible, especially those kids.

165
00:11:35.600 --> 00:11:39.559
Yeah, it's a horrible story.
Erry Weiss was born on July third,

166
00:11:39.679 --> 00:11:43.879
nineteen seventy seven, in Berwin,
Illinois, to high school sweethearts Angela

167
00:11:43.919 --> 00:11:48.919
and Don Weiss. Her brother Mario
was born two years earlier. The family

168
00:11:48.960 --> 00:11:52.799
moved from apartment to apartment until they
settled in Cicero, on the outskirts of

169
00:11:52.879 --> 00:11:56.240
Chicago. Angela and Don were barely
out of high school, but they were

170
00:11:56.279 --> 00:12:00.799
great parents. Angela put the children
in every activity in spae she could find.

171
00:12:01.279 --> 00:12:05.320
She even started the PTA in Mario
and Sherry school. The kids had

172
00:12:05.320 --> 00:12:07.960
a happy childhood, growing up in
a diverse neighborhood full of kids to play

173
00:12:09.000 --> 00:12:13.360
with. Cherry was bright with a
sunny disposition. Mario was smart and more

174
00:12:13.360 --> 00:12:16.720
introverted than Sherry. He was a
great big brother and protected her fiercely.

175
00:12:18.240 --> 00:12:22.000
He wasn't a violent kid, but
he would throw punches if necessary to defend

176
00:12:22.039 --> 00:12:24.919
his sister's honor. The family moved
to Largo, Florida, in nineteen eighty

177
00:12:24.960 --> 00:12:28.080
eight, when the kids were twelve
and ten, after Don took a job

178
00:12:28.120 --> 00:12:33.159
there. The kids missed their old
neighborhood, but Sherry adapted and was quick

179
00:12:33.200 --> 00:12:37.639
to make friends. Mario was slower
to adjust. Cherry was a cheerleader in

180
00:12:37.679 --> 00:12:41.360
high school and also played softball and
was in the drama club. Cherry attended

181
00:12:41.360 --> 00:12:46.720
the Barbizon School for modeling, but
she was only five feet tall and she

182
00:12:46.840 --> 00:12:50.279
was told she was too short to
be a model. Cherry was a big

183
00:12:50.320 --> 00:12:54.799
sports fan. You could take the
girl out of Chicago, but she's always

184
00:12:54.799 --> 00:12:58.000
going to be in Asper at Stowe. I've heard she loved the Bulls and

185
00:12:58.039 --> 00:13:01.120
the white Sox. I didn't know
they were any white Sox. I know

186
00:13:01.320 --> 00:13:05.200
that thought every Chicago person was a
Cubs fan. Yeah, no, there's

187
00:13:05.799 --> 00:13:09.559
two Chicago baseball teams. There are
white Sox fans out there. When her

188
00:13:09.600 --> 00:13:13.200
favorite player, Michael Jordan, tried
his hand at baseball for a season,

189
00:13:13.480 --> 00:13:16.399
Cherry went to watch him at training
camp. Do you remember that? Oh?

190
00:13:16.480 --> 00:13:20.919
Yeah, can I forget? Yeah? She brought flowers for Michael.

191
00:13:20.159 --> 00:13:24.960
She gave them to an assistant to
give to Michael after practice. Serry got

192
00:13:24.960 --> 00:13:28.120
the thrill of her life when after
the game, Michael pulled up next to

193
00:13:28.120 --> 00:13:31.480
her in his corvette and thanked her
for the flowers. Angie and Don's marriage,

194
00:13:31.799 --> 00:13:35.399
once so strong, crumbled when Sherry
was a senior in high school.

195
00:13:35.919 --> 00:13:41.039
Cherry and Mario blamed Don for the
breakup of their family and refused to speak

196
00:13:41.080 --> 00:13:43.519
to him. He didn't have an
affair, but as middle age crept up

197
00:13:43.559 --> 00:13:48.000
on him, he wanted to see
what else life had to offer. Cherry

198
00:13:48.080 --> 00:13:50.639
graduated from high school in nineteen eighty
five, and to the shock and surprise

199
00:13:50.679 --> 00:13:54.679
of her family, she joined the
Air Force. Why was that shocking to

200
00:13:54.720 --> 00:13:58.039
them? Does she just not seem
like the military type? I think it

201
00:13:58.159 --> 00:14:03.840
just kind of came the blue.
Christopher Coleman was born on March twentieth,

202
00:14:03.919 --> 00:14:09.000
nineteen seventy seven, in Percy,
Illinois, to Ron and Connie Coleman.

203
00:14:09.879 --> 00:14:13.159
He has two younger brothers, Brad
and Keith. The Colman family has deep

204
00:14:13.240 --> 00:14:16.799
roots in Percy. They came from
a long line of coal miners on both

205
00:14:16.840 --> 00:14:24.320
sides. Chris's grandparents were coal miners
and farmers. His paternal grandfather also served

206
00:14:24.360 --> 00:14:28.720
as mayor of Percy for two terms. Young men would graduate from high school

207
00:14:28.759 --> 00:14:33.399
and then head to the mines for
work. After graduation, ron Coleman worked

208
00:14:33.399 --> 00:14:35.759
in the mines for a time,
but then felt called to join the ministry.

209
00:14:37.759 --> 00:14:41.440
He and some friends formed a new
Methodist church in Belleville, Illinois,

210
00:14:41.480 --> 00:14:46.000
about an hour away. As their
church grew, they refurbished an old tavern

211
00:14:46.159 --> 00:14:50.759
called the Nighthawk in Chester, Illinois
and renamed it Grace Bible Church. It

212
00:14:50.799 --> 00:14:56.759
was a lively congregation. People frequently
broke out speaking in tongues, even Chris,

213
00:14:56.440 --> 00:15:01.480
do you remember the time we saw
someone speaking in to I'll never forget

214
00:15:01.519 --> 00:15:07.919
it. Our friends, our good
friends, who's wedding we met at at

215
00:15:07.919 --> 00:15:16.200
they got intertwined with this coldish religion. We were trying to support them and

216
00:15:16.279 --> 00:15:20.360
we went to this it was called
a sands and we witnessed people. I

217
00:15:20.440 --> 00:15:24.720
just remember one lady was there more
than one lady, I just remember one

218
00:15:24.720 --> 00:15:26.960
also. But it was pretty freaky. It was really freaky, and I

219
00:15:28.279 --> 00:15:31.120
mean, I'm not sure if it's
real or not it seemed. I don't

220
00:15:31.120 --> 00:15:35.240
know. That was such a strange
situation. It was very strange. I

221
00:15:35.240 --> 00:15:37.840
don't know what else to say about
it, but it really freaked us out.

222
00:15:37.960 --> 00:15:41.840
The whole thing freaked us out.
It some day we'll someday we'll do

223
00:15:41.840 --> 00:15:45.559
a story time and go into more
detail on that. I think, yeah,

224
00:15:45.559 --> 00:15:46.879
I think we promised that before.
But it was one of the weirdest

225
00:15:46.919 --> 00:15:50.480
experiences of our life. It's all
like, guess I have to say about

226
00:15:50.519 --> 00:15:56.159
it. Ron Chris's dad lacked the
charisma and booming voice of a great preacher,

227
00:15:56.240 --> 00:16:00.240
but he was determined to succeed.
Looking for ends inspiration, Ron began

228
00:16:00.320 --> 00:16:06.039
driving to Saint Louis to see evangelical
preacher Joyce Meyer, who had become a

229
00:16:06.120 --> 00:16:11.279
dynamic force among the community. She
was relatable and direct. The people loved

230
00:16:11.279 --> 00:16:15.039
her. The Grace Bible Church continued
to grow. By nineteen ninety four,

231
00:16:15.120 --> 00:16:19.080
they were able to build a new
church. Ron was promoted from part time

232
00:16:19.080 --> 00:16:25.159
pastor to full time. Ron wasn't
the warmest or most alluring preacher, but

233
00:16:25.279 --> 00:16:29.639
he was kind and loyal, and
his church slowly grew. He was able

234
00:16:29.679 --> 00:16:33.159
to quit the coal mine and the
family moved to Chester to be closer to

235
00:16:33.240 --> 00:16:37.679
their church. Chester, Illinois,
is a small town of about eight thousand

236
00:16:37.840 --> 00:16:42.159
located in southwest Illinois, about sixty
miles south of Saint Louis. Chester is

237
00:16:42.200 --> 00:16:47.399
home to Elsie Seeger, creator of
the comic Popeye, who was born there

238
00:16:47.440 --> 00:16:51.159
in eighteen ninety four. Popeye was
not born there, was Elsie was born

239
00:16:51.240 --> 00:16:55.759
there? Yes, Okay. The
town itself is an homage to Popeye,

240
00:16:55.759 --> 00:17:00.320
with statues throughout the downtown honoring Popeye, Olive Oil, and Wimpy, who

241
00:17:00.360 --> 00:17:03.240
are all based on real people from
Chester. Each fall in Chester, a

242
00:17:03.279 --> 00:17:08.799
Popeye parade and picnic are held honoring
Chester's most famous resident. That's fun.

243
00:17:08.880 --> 00:17:12.480
Yeah, it was really cute,
and it's not far so. My dad

244
00:17:14.039 --> 00:17:18.440
lives in southern Illinois too, and
we have made many trips. This is

245
00:17:18.640 --> 00:17:22.559
further north where my dad lives,
on the very tip of southern Illinois.

246
00:17:23.240 --> 00:17:26.359
But Metropolis. I was gonna mention
that we used to go to Metropolis,

247
00:17:26.359 --> 00:17:30.160
which is basically a big homage to
Supermanly. That was a cute little town

248
00:17:30.200 --> 00:17:36.319
too. Chester is also home to
the Menard Correctional Facility, the second oldest

249
00:17:36.400 --> 00:17:41.839
and the largest maximum security prison in
Illinois, which used to house Illinois's Death

250
00:17:41.880 --> 00:17:47.519
Row inmates. There are at least
thirteen churches in Chester, very religious community,

251
00:17:47.880 --> 00:17:51.799
it sounds like it. Chris attended
Chester High School. He was a

252
00:17:51.799 --> 00:17:55.240
good kid, well liked by all, and unlike his brothers, not a

253
00:17:55.279 --> 00:17:59.880
troublemaker. He was the golden child
of the family. His mother said the

254
00:18:00.079 --> 00:18:04.720
worst words she ever heard him say
was piss Chris pretty bad. Chris played

255
00:18:04.799 --> 00:18:10.880
football and baseball Charlie Maddingly. His
coach said, quote, you couldn't ask

256
00:18:10.920 --> 00:18:14.160
for a better kid. He was
very kind. He was a team player.

257
00:18:14.680 --> 00:18:17.960
I hardly ever saw him lose his
temper. He went out one night

258
00:18:18.000 --> 00:18:19.960
and had drunk a little bit.
His parents were out of town, and

259
00:18:21.039 --> 00:18:23.960
he felt so guilty. He called
his high school basketball coach and confessed.

260
00:18:26.440 --> 00:18:29.960
Chris struggled with his confidence, though, when a Marine came to his high

261
00:18:29.960 --> 00:18:33.359
school, Chris was impressed with his
confidence and poise. After high school,

262
00:18:33.400 --> 00:18:38.119
Chris enlisted in the Marines. While
stationed in Quantico, he met Sherry Coleman

263
00:18:38.200 --> 00:18:44.039
while working in the canine unit.
After basic training, Sherry was assigned to

264
00:18:44.079 --> 00:18:48.480
the canine unit in Quantico, Virginia. She and her German shepherd patrolled the

265
00:18:48.519 --> 00:18:52.039
base. Cherry had an adventurous,
spunky spirit and loved making new friends in

266
00:18:52.079 --> 00:18:56.839
the Air Force. A few months
into her job, she met Chris Coleman,

267
00:18:56.240 --> 00:19:00.759
a fellow canine officer. They quickly
fell in love of Sherry twenty one

268
00:19:00.880 --> 00:19:06.599
became pregnant in September nineteen ninety seven, just a few months into the relationship.

269
00:19:07.039 --> 00:19:11.079
She and Chris twenty two decided to
leave the military and start a new

270
00:19:11.119 --> 00:19:15.759
life together in southern Illinois, where
Chris's family lived. After they left Quantico,

271
00:19:15.880 --> 00:19:19.960
Sharry and Chris drove to his parents'
house. Chris introduced her as a

272
00:19:21.000 --> 00:19:26.640
good friend instead of fiance. Sensing
their disapproval, Oh boy, he told

273
00:19:26.640 --> 00:19:30.759
his parents that he was driving her
to Chicago to visit her family. Years

274
00:19:30.839 --> 00:19:33.319
later, Ron Coleman said of the
meeting, quote, we didn't pick up

275
00:19:33.359 --> 00:19:38.519
anything except she was a worldly little
girl, little short shorts, tattoo on

276
00:19:38.559 --> 00:19:42.839
her leg. Not the person we
thought he'd be with. So that's not

277
00:19:44.519 --> 00:19:47.880
very complimentary. No, I wonder
how Sherry felt about that. And when

278
00:19:47.960 --> 00:19:53.319
Ron said this, Sheherry had already
passed, So just they were pretty horrible

279
00:19:53.359 --> 00:19:59.559
to her. Yeah, here's Connie
Coleman talking about Sherry when he came back

280
00:19:59.599 --> 00:20:03.039
with Shay, Sorry, what did
you think? Surprise, surprise, I

281
00:20:03.160 --> 00:20:07.079
was surprised. I wasn't impressed one
or the other. She was just a

282
00:20:07.079 --> 00:20:11.880
little blondeheaded girl to me, a
little blonde headed girl. So again,

283
00:20:12.079 --> 00:20:17.079
this is after Sharry had passed.
These people had they didn't have a lot

284
00:20:17.079 --> 00:20:19.119
of nice things to say about Sherry, and Sherry was lovely. Yeah,

285
00:20:19.880 --> 00:20:25.240
Angela and Mario, Sherry's mother and
brother had recently moved back to Illinois from

286
00:20:25.279 --> 00:20:30.759
Florida. Scherry was excited to introduce
her family to Chris. Unfortunately, that

287
00:20:30.839 --> 00:20:34.160
meeting did not go well. Mario
took an instant dislike to Chris and found

288
00:20:34.200 --> 00:20:38.279
him off putting, distant, and
boring. Mario tried to talk his sister

289
00:20:38.319 --> 00:20:42.599
out of marrying Chris. Neither had
told their family that they were expecting at

290
00:20:42.599 --> 00:20:47.279
this point. A few days later, Sharry and Chris went to Chicago City

291
00:20:47.279 --> 00:20:51.319
Hall and quietly got married, just
the two of them. They drove six

292
00:20:51.359 --> 00:20:53.720
hours to their new home in Perry, Illinois. The town of only one

293
00:20:53.759 --> 00:20:57.960
thousand was a coal mining town that
had seen better days by the nineteen nineties.

294
00:20:59.519 --> 00:21:02.839
They waited a month to tell their
families that they were expecting a baby.

295
00:21:03.240 --> 00:21:07.680
You can imagine the Coleman's happy.
Although Sheherry had been baptized Catholic,

296
00:21:07.799 --> 00:21:12.599
she wasn't particularly religious. She was
a free spirit. Life in southern Illinois

297
00:21:12.599 --> 00:21:17.960
centered around the church. While the
Colemans weren't thrilled at their son's choice of

298
00:21:18.000 --> 00:21:21.799
wife, they were pleased that she
was malleable and willing to attend church with

299
00:21:21.880 --> 00:21:26.160
them. Sharry took to the New
Church as if she'd always been an evangelical

300
00:21:26.240 --> 00:21:30.119
Christian. She was baptized in nineteen
ninety eight and soon was also speaking in

301
00:21:30.200 --> 00:21:36.680
tongues. Chris began working at the
Chester Mental Health Center as a security therapy

302
00:21:36.720 --> 00:21:41.480
aid. On April thirtieth, nineteen
ninety eight, Sharry and Chris welcomed their

303
00:21:41.519 --> 00:21:45.640
first son, Garrett Dominic. He
was his father's image. Sharry doated on

304
00:21:45.680 --> 00:21:49.680
her new son. Have you heard
of Joyce Meyer before this? No?

305
00:21:49.839 --> 00:21:52.119
I don't think so. I don't
think I had either. But she is

306
00:21:52.160 --> 00:21:57.319
definitely a major player in the televangelist
community. So she was not just a

307
00:21:57.559 --> 00:22:03.200
Southern Illinois oh, she is worldwide. Ron and Connie Coleman were friendly with

308
00:22:03.279 --> 00:22:07.200
Joyce Meyer Joyce had a new dog
that she needed help training, and Ron

309
00:22:07.240 --> 00:22:11.519
and Connie mentioned their son had trained
dogs in the Marines. Joyce hired Chris

310
00:22:11.559 --> 00:22:15.960
to train her new dog. Impressed
with his work ethic, she offered him

311
00:22:15.960 --> 00:22:19.039
a job in her security department.
He was soon promoted to head of security.

312
00:22:19.480 --> 00:22:23.400
A great job for such a young
man. Here's a clip of Joy's

313
00:22:23.440 --> 00:22:30.119
talking about her ministry and how she
hired Chris. We have a large teaching

314
00:22:30.160 --> 00:22:36.119
ministry that goes around the world by
television and radio, and we have large

315
00:22:36.119 --> 00:22:40.720
show outreaches around the world to the
poor and the needy. Lot of orphanages

316
00:22:40.799 --> 00:22:45.279
and support hospitals and medical programs and
things like that for the underprivileged. How

317
00:22:45.279 --> 00:22:49.839
many employees do you think you have
worldwide? About nine hundred and we'll get

318
00:22:49.880 --> 00:22:52.599
right to the point. Do you
know the defendant in this case, Christopher

319
00:22:52.599 --> 00:22:56.680
Coleman? Yes, I did.
How long have you known him? Since

320
00:22:56.680 --> 00:23:00.720
he was a little boy? And
how was that his parents came to some

321
00:23:00.759 --> 00:23:03.000
conferences that I did over in Illinois. I did a weekly meeting over there,

322
00:23:03.000 --> 00:23:07.240
and his mother came to it brought
him with him. Now, at

323
00:23:07.240 --> 00:23:10.920
some point did he become an employee
of Joyce Meyer's ministry. Yes he did.

324
00:23:11.039 --> 00:23:15.200
And about when was that probably about
nineteen ninety eight, so in through

325
00:23:15.400 --> 00:23:18.160
two thousand and nine he was with
you about eleven years, is that correct?

326
00:23:18.519 --> 00:23:22.480
What kind of employee was he?
What was his responsibilities there? He

327
00:23:22.559 --> 00:23:27.640
was in the security department? Was
he in general security? Did he move

328
00:23:27.720 --> 00:23:30.319
up through the ranks? What happened
with that? If I remember correctly,

329
00:23:30.400 --> 00:23:36.480
he started in general security, and
then he became the supervisor of that department,

330
00:23:37.160 --> 00:23:44.319
and then one a personal security person
that I had left our employee.

331
00:23:44.880 --> 00:23:49.279
We offered Chris that job and he
took it. Defendant huh I mentioned that

332
00:23:49.400 --> 00:23:55.079
was from a deposition. The deposition
could have been from any number of legal

333
00:23:55.799 --> 00:24:00.640
Okay. Chris overhauled and modernized the
whole security tail and hired a team of

334
00:24:00.680 --> 00:24:07.799
his choosing made up of former police
officers and military. Chris was excellent at

335
00:24:07.799 --> 00:24:11.079
his job. He ran the campus
and knew exactly where everyone was at all

336
00:24:11.160 --> 00:24:17.319
times. When Joyce traveled to her
speaking engagements, Chris traveled with her to

337
00:24:17.359 --> 00:24:21.079
scope out the venue and ensure her
safety. And Chris at this time,

338
00:24:21.119 --> 00:24:23.640
he was like twenty three, twenty
four. He's very young. That's pretty

339
00:24:23.640 --> 00:24:29.480
impressive. Joyce Meyer Ministries was located
in Fenton, Missouri, a long joy

340
00:24:29.519 --> 00:24:33.799
for Chris. The Colemans moved to
Afton, Missouri, a suburb of Saint

341
00:24:33.839 --> 00:24:37.480
Louis soon after he got the job, to a furnished three bedroom house that

342
00:24:37.640 --> 00:24:41.079
was on the ministry campus. Cherry
gave birth to the couple's second son,

343
00:24:41.279 --> 00:24:45.640
Gavin Christopher, in January of two
thousand. He looked just like his big

344
00:24:45.640 --> 00:24:51.480
brother, but he had Cherry's bubbly
personality. Garrett was more introverted, but

345
00:24:52.359 --> 00:24:56.519
Gavin was a little more rampunctious and
outgoing. Okay, Soon after, Chris

346
00:24:56.559 --> 00:25:02.119
got a vasectomy. He was about
twenty three twenty four, which is pretty

347
00:25:02.160 --> 00:25:04.720
young to make that decision. Yeah, Scherry wanted more children, but Chris

348
00:25:04.880 --> 00:25:10.799
was like, I'm done. Cherry
also began working for the ministry, closely

349
00:25:10.880 --> 00:25:14.920
with Joyce Meyer. She went on
a life changing trip to India. She

350
00:25:15.039 --> 00:25:18.440
was forever changed by the hunger and
suffering she saw during her visit. She

351
00:25:18.519 --> 00:25:23.720
set her mind to returning someday with
the ability to help more people. Cherry

352
00:25:23.920 --> 00:25:26.960
was proud of the life that she
and Chris had built together, and she

353
00:25:27.039 --> 00:25:30.559
wanted her parents to be proud of
her too. In two thousand and two,

354
00:25:30.640 --> 00:25:34.640
she decided to test the waters with
her father. They hadn't spoken since

355
00:25:34.640 --> 00:25:40.119
her parents' divorce. She sent him
an email. Don still lived in Florida

356
00:25:40.279 --> 00:25:44.240
and was engaged. He was ecstatic
to hear from his daughter. He didn't

357
00:25:44.240 --> 00:25:48.160
even know that he was a grandfather. Don asked if he and his fiancee,

358
00:25:48.240 --> 00:25:52.440
Deborah could come for a visit,
and Sherry agreed. The reunion went

359
00:25:52.480 --> 00:25:56.799
great, better than anyone expected.
Don wasn't sure about his son in law,

360
00:25:56.880 --> 00:26:00.440
though, he was so quiet and
expressionless that he was hard to read.

361
00:26:00.480 --> 00:26:04.599
Despite the Coleman's involvement with Joyce Meyer, they still drove to Chester every

362
00:26:04.599 --> 00:26:10.480
weekend to attend church with Chris's parents
at Grace Church. George Wise, a

363
00:26:10.519 --> 00:26:14.880
co worker of Chris's who was in
charge of communications at Joyce Meyer, worked

364
00:26:14.880 --> 00:26:18.599
in the office right next to Chris. He thought Chris was wound a little

365
00:26:18.640 --> 00:26:22.039
too tight, he said quote.
He was staunch and direct in his bearing,

366
00:26:22.279 --> 00:26:26.640
very spiffy and military like. He
definitely didn't have a friendly demeanor.

367
00:26:27.200 --> 00:26:32.440
He was also a perfectionist and very
tightly wrapped. He struck me as being

368
00:26:32.519 --> 00:26:36.519
potentially explosive. The kind of guy
who was always struggling to keep his temper

369
00:26:36.599 --> 00:26:41.480
under control. He'd get upset over
seemingly minor things, like somebody being on

370
00:26:41.559 --> 00:26:45.880
a computer when they weren't supposed to
be unquote. Some people thought Chris's power

371
00:26:45.920 --> 00:26:49.640
had gone to his head. He
was arrogant and off putting to his co

372
00:26:49.799 --> 00:26:53.559
workers, but he was proud of
how efficient the campus ran, and he

373
00:26:53.640 --> 00:26:57.799
knew Joyce Smyer was safe in his
hands. He didn't care what other people

374
00:26:57.799 --> 00:27:02.880
thought of him. Often, Chris's
job required him to travel with Joyce for

375
00:27:02.920 --> 00:27:07.119
a week or two at a time. Joyce Smyer liked to shop. Chris

376
00:27:07.119 --> 00:27:11.680
would carry her bags. Sometimes she'd
buy him expensive things. I guess I'm

377
00:27:11.720 --> 00:27:15.880
pretty close to Joyce because I know
her bra and panty size, He'd liked

378
00:27:15.920 --> 00:27:21.440
to tell people on these trips he
served as Joyce's bodyguard. Chris had bulked

379
00:27:21.519 --> 00:27:25.279
up over the years and was now
one hundred and ninety pounds of lean muscle.

380
00:27:25.960 --> 00:27:29.359
He'd shaved his head because he thought
it made him look tougher. There

381
00:27:29.359 --> 00:27:33.039
were rumors that he had a little
help from steroids to get his new muscles.

382
00:27:33.960 --> 00:27:37.440
I think Chris looked like an idiot
with his shaved head. Oh really,

383
00:27:38.119 --> 00:27:41.720
I just hate him. He's a
horrible person. That's all I'm going

384
00:27:41.759 --> 00:27:44.000
to say. Okay, that's all
I'm going to do. It's not all

385
00:27:44.000 --> 00:27:48.599
i'm gonna say for now, though. Joyce Smyer had been a rising star

386
00:27:48.880 --> 00:27:52.920
in the evangelical movement for the past
two decades. Growing up in Saint Louis,

387
00:27:53.000 --> 00:27:57.000
she was a victim of sexual abuse
by her father. Her first marriage,

388
00:27:57.039 --> 00:28:02.440
at the age of eighteen, ended
in a after five years. As

389
00:28:02.440 --> 00:28:06.839
a young divorcee, she frequented bars
and had one night stands until she settled

390
00:28:06.880 --> 00:28:10.920
down and married her second husband,
Dave Meyer, in nineteen sixty seven.

391
00:28:11.680 --> 00:28:15.000
They've been married ever since, and
they have four children together. In nineteen

392
00:28:15.039 --> 00:28:19.720
seventy six, Joyce said she heard
God calling her. She became drunk with

393
00:28:19.799 --> 00:28:25.519
the spirit of God and never looked
back. She started teaching Bible classes at

394
00:28:25.559 --> 00:28:30.519
her church, then began a successful
Bible study radio show. She became an

395
00:28:30.519 --> 00:28:34.319
associate pastor at her church, Life
Christian Center, until she founded her own

396
00:28:34.400 --> 00:28:40.160
ministry in nineteen eighty five, called
Life in the Word, which eventually became

397
00:28:40.279 --> 00:28:45.359
Joyce Meyer Ministries. Along with her
daily radio show, she began a TV

398
00:28:45.440 --> 00:28:52.160
show, Enjoying Everyday Life that became
nationally syndicated. Her ministry's annual revenue is

399
00:28:52.200 --> 00:28:56.559
over one hundred million dollars. I
should say that that was estimated from like

400
00:28:56.599 --> 00:29:00.839
twenty years ago. It's much bigger
now, I'm sure a lot. She

401
00:29:00.960 --> 00:29:07.160
has won people over with her plainspokenness
and self deprecating humor. She has empowered

402
00:29:07.160 --> 00:29:11.759
millions of people, mostly women,
to accept God into their lives. Joyce

403
00:29:11.799 --> 00:29:17.000
isn't without critics, lots of them. She believes in prosperity Gospel, which

404
00:29:17.039 --> 00:29:22.359
advocates for accumulating material wealth and riches. She preaches that the more money you

405
00:29:22.440 --> 00:29:26.759
send to her ministry, the more
you will prosper God has made her rich,

406
00:29:26.960 --> 00:29:29.799
she says, and there's no reason
to think that he won't make you

407
00:29:29.960 --> 00:29:33.319
rich. Also, if you stay
in your faith, you are going to

408
00:29:33.400 --> 00:29:37.640
get paid. She once told an
audience in Detroit, I'm living now in

409
00:29:37.680 --> 00:29:42.279
my reward. Joyce Meyer Ministries sits
on a fifty two acre campus in Fenton,

410
00:29:42.319 --> 00:29:47.759
Missouri, just outside of Saint Louis. The complex contains one hundred and

411
00:29:47.799 --> 00:29:52.400
fifty thousand square foot office building,
a thirty five thousand foot distribution center and

412
00:29:52.440 --> 00:29:57.480
a five thousand foot garage. In
two thousand and two, Joyce's headquarters was

413
00:29:57.559 --> 00:30:03.160
valued at twenty million dollars. The
interior is filled with another six million dollars

414
00:30:03.200 --> 00:30:08.799
of extravagant furnishings. Joyce owns multiple
homes valued in the millions of dollars,

415
00:30:10.200 --> 00:30:14.599
a ten million dollar private jet,
a fleet of cars, and extensive art

416
00:30:14.640 --> 00:30:19.039
and jewelry collections. She employs a
full time hairstylist, and her four children

417
00:30:19.079 --> 00:30:23.599
live in luxurious homes paid for by
the ministry. Her home in Saint Louis

418
00:30:23.680 --> 00:30:29.759
is said to be valued at twenty
million dollars. Joyce employs about nine hundred

419
00:30:29.799 --> 00:30:33.240
people. A battle has raged for
years between Joyce and the state of Missouri

420
00:30:33.640 --> 00:30:38.920
about the Ministry's tax exempt status.
The tax code states that religious leaders,

421
00:30:40.000 --> 00:30:45.000
homes, salaries, and perks must
be reasonable to keep their tax free status.

422
00:30:45.759 --> 00:30:49.680
Religious groups are given liberties that other
nonprofits don't enjoy. They don't have

423
00:30:49.759 --> 00:30:53.720
to prove their charitable contributions, and
they don't have to report their earnings.

424
00:30:55.119 --> 00:30:59.640
But Joyce is adamant that she is
exempt from paying taxes. She doesn't defend

425
00:30:59.680 --> 00:31:03.799
her spaced habits because quote there's no
need for us to apologize for being blessed.

426
00:31:03.880 --> 00:31:07.599
Unquote. She once said, quote, you can be a businessman here

427
00:31:07.599 --> 00:31:11.839
in Saint Louis, and people think
the more you have, the more wonderful

428
00:31:11.839 --> 00:31:14.359
it is. But if you're a
preacher, then all of a sudden,

429
00:31:14.440 --> 00:31:18.759
it becomes a problem. End quote. We mentioned Joyce's lifestyle just to say

430
00:31:18.759 --> 00:31:22.319
that she had enemies and people that
consider her to be a fraud and a

431
00:31:22.319 --> 00:31:26.480
scam artist. There's a lot of
money. It's a lot of money bringing

432
00:31:26.519 --> 00:31:32.000
in Yeah. Yeah, it is
hard to reconcile it. We're not here

433
00:31:32.160 --> 00:31:36.599
to comfort religion at all. But
you know, if your minister has a

434
00:31:36.640 --> 00:31:41.160
private jet and multiple million dollar homes, you know that would raise my brains.

435
00:31:41.160 --> 00:31:45.039
You're living in you know again,
if you're asking me to give you

436
00:31:45.079 --> 00:31:48.079
money every week and wait and she
I believe. She preaches like give till

437
00:31:48.119 --> 00:31:52.079
it hurts and it'll come back to
you in space. Right. She does

438
00:31:52.119 --> 00:31:56.720
bring in a lot of money,
but some of the money goes to charitable

439
00:31:56.759 --> 00:32:02.319
causes and she supports other ministries and
people around the world. Right, We'll

440
00:32:02.319 --> 00:32:14.279
be right back after a break.
Joyce Meyer was thrilled with the initiative and

441
00:32:14.319 --> 00:32:17.559
professionalism of Chris Coleman. In two
thousand and four, he was making an

442
00:32:17.559 --> 00:32:22.519
impressive seventy six thousand dollars a year, which is about one hundred and twenty

443
00:32:22.519 --> 00:32:25.680
five thousand dollars today. He and
Cherry bought a nice house in Colombia,

444
00:32:25.720 --> 00:32:30.200
Illinois. They moved to a newly
developed area of Columbia called Columbia Lakes.

445
00:32:30.720 --> 00:32:36.079
It was a fifteen minute drive across
the bridge to Saint Louis. They moved

446
00:32:36.079 --> 00:32:39.400
into a five year old neat two
story white house with black shutters on Robert

447
00:32:39.480 --> 00:32:44.359
Drive. The new neighborhood was a
perfect fit for the Colemans, with lots

448
00:32:44.400 --> 00:32:49.440
of other young families. Cherry quickly
made friends with many neighbors. Chris was

449
00:32:49.440 --> 00:32:53.400
more reserved and slower to make friends. His busiest schedule didn't help. Cherry

450
00:32:53.480 --> 00:32:57.920
was also moving quickly through the ranks
at Joyce Meyer Ministries. She got a

451
00:32:58.000 --> 00:33:01.319
job working in the IT department.
Between the boys, her job, friends,

452
00:33:01.319 --> 00:33:06.680
and church, Cherry was busy.
Her father Don invited her to his

453
00:33:06.759 --> 00:33:09.759
wedding in Florida. She'd said she
would go, but was a no show

454
00:33:09.799 --> 00:33:14.359
on the big day. Don was
hurt and the father and daughter had another

455
00:33:14.440 --> 00:33:19.160
falling out that lasted sadly until the
end of Sherry's life. Cherry went to

456
00:33:19.240 --> 00:33:22.519
Chicago as much as she could to
see her family. She had tried hard

457
00:33:22.559 --> 00:33:25.839
to be accepted into the Coleman family, but whatever she did, she fell

458
00:33:25.920 --> 00:33:31.160
short of their expectations and never quite
won their approval or love. Which is

459
00:33:31.240 --> 00:33:36.640
crazy, because everyone adored Sherry.
She was sweet, kind, fun,

460
00:33:36.960 --> 00:33:40.079
hard working, and a great friend
and mother. Cherry wasn't a pushover and

461
00:33:40.119 --> 00:33:45.000
tried to be confident and true to
herself, which maybe what irked her in

462
00:33:45.079 --> 00:33:50.920
laws. In Ron's Grace Church,
he had become more aggressive in his preaching

463
00:33:51.200 --> 00:33:54.680
and with his parishioners. This is
my church. He'd say, if you

464
00:33:54.680 --> 00:33:59.599
don't like the way I'm running things, then you can leave. Or perhaps

465
00:33:59.599 --> 00:34:02.079
he'd use his favorite line, which
was also my mom's favorite line, if

466
00:34:02.119 --> 00:34:05.559
you don't like it here, there's
the door. Don't let it hit you

467
00:34:05.599 --> 00:34:08.440
on the butt on your way out. Connie had also become a pastor,

468
00:34:08.519 --> 00:34:13.719
and together they ran their church with
tight control. They were more aggressive than

469
00:34:13.840 --> 00:34:16.599
nurturing with their flock. If anyone
had a gall to leave the church,

470
00:34:16.679 --> 00:34:22.960
they were ostracized. There was a
rumor that joyce Meyer had given the Colemans

471
00:34:22.079 --> 00:34:27.840
one hundred thousand dollars to help pay
off the mortgage on Greece Church. For

472
00:34:28.000 --> 00:34:30.360
a person who hadn't attended church much
in her younger life, it became the

473
00:34:30.360 --> 00:34:35.800
focal point of Sherry's life. She
was a devoted Christian now. In the

474
00:34:35.840 --> 00:34:39.719
spring of two thousand and six,
Scherry began attending the non denominational Destiny Church.

475
00:34:40.320 --> 00:34:44.360
It was a small, understated cinder
block building, but it felt like

476
00:34:44.400 --> 00:34:47.679
home to Sherry and Chris and the
boys began worshiping with her at Destiny Church.

477
00:34:49.840 --> 00:34:52.199
In two thousand and seven, Scharry
left her job at joyce Meyer Ministries

478
00:34:52.559 --> 00:34:57.719
for an opportunity to work with Phil
Stern, the pastor of Destiny Church.

479
00:34:58.440 --> 00:35:01.960
She worked as a receptionist and and
helped plan missions to Asia and Latin America.

480
00:35:02.679 --> 00:35:07.480
Cherry also began training to be an
EMT, following through with the promise

481
00:35:07.519 --> 00:35:10.400
she had made to herself during her
trip to India. She saw the dire

482
00:35:10.480 --> 00:35:14.840
need for medical care in some of
the countries she visited and wanted to help

483
00:35:14.880 --> 00:35:21.719
save lives. So Sherry super busy
lady Lots Going on two thousand and eight

484
00:35:21.760 --> 00:35:24.280
would prove to be a trying year
for the Colemans. In January, Sherry

485
00:35:24.320 --> 00:35:28.920
grew tired of being a single parent
half of the time and asked Chris to

486
00:35:29.000 --> 00:35:32.239
quit his job. He agreed initially, the boys, now eight and ten,

487
00:35:32.320 --> 00:35:36.920
were growing up fast and he was
missing it. Gavin and Garrett were

488
00:35:36.960 --> 00:35:40.159
sweet, active boys. They loved
sports and wrestling each other. They were

489
00:35:40.159 --> 00:35:45.239
well disciplined. Cherry was the permissive
parent and Chris was the disciplinarian. No

490
00:35:45.280 --> 00:35:49.480
one ever witnessed Chris being physical with
the boys, but all it took was

491
00:35:49.519 --> 00:35:52.880
a stern look from him for their
behavior to change in a split second.

492
00:35:52.760 --> 00:35:57.960
Garrett and Gavin both played baseball and
football. Chris loved watching their games and

493
00:35:58.039 --> 00:36:01.119
helping to coach their teams. With
his demanding travel schedule, he missed the

494
00:36:01.119 --> 00:36:06.519
bulk of their seasons. He had
been thinking of starting his own surveillance business,

495
00:36:06.679 --> 00:36:10.280
and the timing seemed right, but
he'd received another raise from Joyce and

496
00:36:10.480 --> 00:36:15.639
decided to hang on a little longer. Joyce and her adult children took advantage

497
00:36:15.639 --> 00:36:20.360
of Chris, and he sometimes did
menial tasks for them, like shoveling their

498
00:36:20.440 --> 00:36:23.599
driveways. His request, I mean
Joyce had someone to do everything for.

499
00:36:23.719 --> 00:36:29.199
It surprised me that she asked him
that his requests for a time off were

500
00:36:29.199 --> 00:36:31.960
often denied because Joyce only felt safe
when Chris was with her. During her

501
00:36:32.000 --> 00:36:37.559
travels, he began to be disgusted
by Joyce Meyer and the way she spent

502
00:36:37.679 --> 00:36:40.840
the heart, hard earned money of
her supporters. It bothered him to see

503
00:36:40.880 --> 00:36:46.559
people with modest incomes fork over a
hefty percentage of their paycheck to the ministry.

504
00:36:46.760 --> 00:36:52.480
Most of her supporters came from very
modest means. Chris appeared to be

505
00:36:52.480 --> 00:36:55.199
a good father and husband when he
was in town. Neighbors often saw him

506
00:36:55.199 --> 00:36:59.679
playing catch with the boys in the
yard. Chris and Sherry went on frequent

507
00:36:59.760 --> 00:37:04.440
date nights with other couples and always
seemed happy together. One night, though,

508
00:37:04.519 --> 00:37:07.320
they were getting into a hot toue
with some friends and they noticed that

509
00:37:07.320 --> 00:37:12.360
Sherry had several bruises on her arms
and legs. Chris had confided in a

510
00:37:12.400 --> 00:37:15.000
friend that the couple were deep in
debt. Shecherry liked a shop and it

511
00:37:15.039 --> 00:37:17.960
was nothing for her to charge one
thousand dollars on her credit card on one

512
00:37:19.000 --> 00:37:22.960
afternoon of shopping. Chris said he
was thinking about divorce. He felt trapped

513
00:37:22.960 --> 00:37:28.360
in his marriage and had married Cherry
only because she was pregnant. He told

514
00:37:28.400 --> 00:37:31.239
a friend that he had never loved
her, which is a horrible thing to

515
00:37:31.239 --> 00:37:35.480
say. Yeah. In summer of
two thousand and eight, while Chris was

516
00:37:35.480 --> 00:37:37.880
on a trip, Sherry confided in
her friend Megan that Chris had beat her

517
00:37:37.960 --> 00:37:42.679
up pretty badly. She told Sherry
that she and the boys could stay with

518
00:37:42.760 --> 00:37:45.320
her, but Sherry brushed it off
and said they were okay, things would

519
00:37:45.360 --> 00:37:50.320
get better. She was determined to
stay with Chris and work on their marriage.

520
00:37:50.599 --> 00:37:54.199
For Sherry, divorce was completely off
the table. In October, Chris

521
00:37:54.199 --> 00:37:58.840
planned to travel to Tampa Bay,
Florida with Joyce Meyer. Cherry's best friend

522
00:37:58.840 --> 00:38:02.159
from high school lived in the arre. Tara Lynce was divorced and worked at

523
00:38:02.199 --> 00:38:07.639
a dog track as a cocktail waitress. She had previously worked at a gentleman's

524
00:38:07.639 --> 00:38:13.079
club. Scherry thought that Tara could
benefit from hearing Joyce Meyers speak and recommended

525
00:38:13.079 --> 00:38:15.000
that she attend the conference. Oh
boy, I have a bad feeling where

526
00:38:15.039 --> 00:38:19.760
this is going. Chris arrived in
town a couple of days before the conference.

527
00:38:20.239 --> 00:38:22.679
He called Tara and asked her to
meet him for dinner and drinks.

528
00:38:22.679 --> 00:38:25.800
They had known each other a little
bit previously. I believe Tara accepted the

529
00:38:25.840 --> 00:38:30.199
invitation. They met for dinner the
first night, and then every night after.

530
00:38:30.920 --> 00:38:36.159
Chris extended his trip to spend more
time in Florida with Tara. Before

531
00:38:36.199 --> 00:38:38.239
the end of the week, Chris
and Tara had proclaimed their love for each

532
00:38:38.280 --> 00:38:43.519
other. Chris, to put it
simply, was obsessed. He was like

533
00:38:43.559 --> 00:38:47.440
a teenager in love. They both
were. Tara was wild and uninhibited.

534
00:38:47.960 --> 00:38:52.559
She didn't have any children, and
Chris became the focus of her world too.

535
00:38:52.920 --> 00:38:57.960
Was Tara really in love with Chris
or was she enjoying stealing her friend's

536
00:38:58.039 --> 00:39:01.840
husband and spoiling her perfect life in
high school? Sherry had gotten all the

537
00:39:01.880 --> 00:39:06.440
guys, and now it might be
time for Tara to even the score.

538
00:39:07.639 --> 00:39:12.760
Chris created a document on his computer
titled All About Tara. In it,

539
00:39:12.800 --> 00:39:15.000
he listed everything he had learned about
Tara in the past week, all of

540
00:39:15.039 --> 00:39:20.880
her favorite things, her sizes,
passwords, their sexual fantasies together, and

541
00:39:20.960 --> 00:39:24.079
even the name of their future daughter, oh boy, zoe Lynn Coleman,

542
00:39:24.679 --> 00:39:30.119
which would entail Chris traversing his dyseectomy. They planned to get married within a

543
00:39:30.199 --> 00:39:35.159
year in Florida, and then Tara
would move to the Saint Louis area so

544
00:39:35.280 --> 00:39:38.480
Chris could keep his job with Joyce
Meyer. They had a plan all right,

545
00:39:38.599 --> 00:39:43.039
but the problem was that Chris was
already married with a wife and two

546
00:39:43.159 --> 00:39:46.519
children, and Joyce Meyer didn't believe
in divorce. That is a problem.

547
00:39:46.920 --> 00:39:51.400
So they named So they've been together
for like a week or two weeks,

548
00:39:51.559 --> 00:39:58.000
and they they they're naming their children, and it's that's a little a little

549
00:39:58.000 --> 00:40:00.880
fast. Well it's immature too.
We're going to have a daughter and we're

550
00:40:00.880 --> 00:40:02.639
going to name Zoe. Yeah,
that seems like something a fifteen year old

551
00:40:02.719 --> 00:40:07.440
would do, right. Yeah.
In November, Chris received the following email,

552
00:40:08.159 --> 00:40:12.880
Fuck Chris's family, they are dead. I'm sure this will make it

553
00:40:12.920 --> 00:40:15.920
to someone in the company. If
you jackasses are like any other company,

554
00:40:15.960 --> 00:40:21.480
this will be someone's account. Pass
this on to Chris. Tell Joyce to

555
00:40:21.519 --> 00:40:24.880
stop preaching the bullshit, or Chris's
family will die. If I can't get

556
00:40:24.920 --> 00:40:28.480
to Joyce, then I will get
to someone close to her. And if

557
00:40:28.480 --> 00:40:30.159
I can't get to him, then
I will kill his wife and kids.

558
00:40:30.719 --> 00:40:35.800
I know Joyce's schedule, so then
I know Chris's schedule. If Joyce doesn't

559
00:40:35.840 --> 00:40:38.840
quit preaching the bullshit, then they
will die during the Houston conference. I

560
00:40:38.880 --> 00:40:43.480
will kill them all as they sleep. If I don't hit there, then

561
00:40:43.559 --> 00:40:46.960
I will kill them during the book
tour or the trip to India. I

562
00:40:47.039 --> 00:40:51.480
know where he lives and I know
they are alone. Fuck them all and

563
00:40:51.519 --> 00:40:54.519
they will soon die. Tell that
motherfucker next time to let me talk to

564
00:40:54.639 --> 00:40:58.599
Joyce. She needs to hear what
I have to say, and now she

565
00:40:58.719 --> 00:41:05.280
will. Oh language that was pretty
fierce, I'll say. The email was

566
00:41:05.320 --> 00:41:09.039
sent individually to Chris, Joyce,
and her family members. The next day,

567
00:41:09.119 --> 00:41:14.360
another threatening, rage filled email was
sent to the same parties. It

568
00:41:14.480 --> 00:41:17.360
said, I know you all got
my fucking email. You think I am

569
00:41:17.400 --> 00:41:22.239
full of shit? Just wait,
I will shoot their asses with my forty

570
00:41:22.800 --> 00:41:25.559
kill them all. I am so
sick of bitches like her taking everyone's cash

571
00:41:25.639 --> 00:41:30.199
so she can fly her jet and
pamper her white ass. Fuck you all.

572
00:41:30.800 --> 00:41:32.760
Tell Chris I will kill them.
He has no idea when, but

573
00:41:32.840 --> 00:41:37.840
it will happen. I'm sure you
motherfuckers are going to try putting your pussy

574
00:41:37.880 --> 00:41:42.639
ass security team at the house or
police whatever. I kill them. That

575
00:41:42.719 --> 00:41:45.400
I am coming after Chris, then
you, Danny, then David. I

576
00:41:45.480 --> 00:41:47.920
may not be able to get to
Joyce, but I'll get the rest of

577
00:41:47.960 --> 00:41:52.159
you motherfuckers. Fuck you all.
I know when you read these, just

578
00:41:52.239 --> 00:41:55.760
wait, you will see fuck you
all. Tell that bitch Joyce to give

579
00:41:55.760 --> 00:42:00.280
my money back and talk to me, and this will all stop. Until

580
00:42:00.320 --> 00:42:04.199
then everyone will die, starting with
Chris's wife and kids. I know his

581
00:42:04.280 --> 00:42:07.519
fucking schedule. Every time Joyce is
gone, he is gone. You motherfuckers

582
00:42:07.519 --> 00:42:12.199
are probably wondering how I got your
emails, you stupid fucks, just like

583
00:42:12.320 --> 00:42:16.159
every company, so fucking predictable,
dumb asses. Okay, I'm sorry,

584
00:42:16.199 --> 00:42:20.239
but I feel like it was important
that we read those. Yeah, there's

585
00:42:20.239 --> 00:42:23.360
more than I've sworn in the last
three years combined, twenty years probably.

586
00:42:25.360 --> 00:42:30.239
So who else would you go after? Then? You know? The security

587
00:42:30.280 --> 00:42:34.360
guy? Yeah? Like and how
would they know his scheduled? Like it's

588
00:42:34.400 --> 00:42:37.880
the whole thing is just ridiculous.
Yeah, seems a little uh questionable.

589
00:42:37.159 --> 00:42:40.320
Like if you have a problem with
the minister, you know, go after

590
00:42:40.320 --> 00:42:45.079
the minister, go after the minister's
family, not this random guy. How

591
00:42:45.119 --> 00:42:47.800
would they even know Joyce's security guy's
name? Yeah? And his wife and

592
00:42:49.639 --> 00:42:52.679
you know family. Why would anyone
want to kill his wife and his family.

593
00:42:53.519 --> 00:42:58.000
Well, Joyce had her enemies,
so it was not altogether shocking,

594
00:42:58.079 --> 00:43:01.320
but nothing like this had ever happened
before. The ministry wasn't sure if the

595
00:43:01.360 --> 00:43:06.960
threats were legitimate. Chris reported the
emails to the police and they assured him

596
00:43:07.000 --> 00:43:10.639
that they would include his house in
their nightly patrols. Joyce had offered to

597
00:43:10.639 --> 00:43:15.559
pay for a security system for the
Colemans, but Chris declined. He said

598
00:43:15.599 --> 00:43:19.519
Sherry owned a gun and she wasn't
afraid to use it. It seems a

599
00:43:19.519 --> 00:43:23.719
bit strange that he would decline an
offer a very nice offer to provide him

600
00:43:23.719 --> 00:43:27.800
a security system when he is traveling
all over the place. You know,

601
00:43:28.280 --> 00:43:30.280
Yeah, he's not there to defend
his wife and kids. He's the security

602
00:43:30.320 --> 00:43:34.199
guy, right, and you would
think the security guy would want to make

603
00:43:34.239 --> 00:43:37.760
his family the most secure place of
all. Yeah, for sure. Meanwhile,

604
00:43:37.880 --> 00:43:43.119
Chris and Tara texted each other NonStop
all day and night. Chris took

605
00:43:43.119 --> 00:43:46.400
to sleeping in the basement so he
could send and receive Tara's explicit messages till

606
00:43:46.599 --> 00:43:51.639
the early morning hours. He was
all but done with his marriage to Sherry.

607
00:43:52.440 --> 00:43:54.719
On November twenty fifth, two thousand
and eight, Chris told Sherry he

608
00:43:54.800 --> 00:43:59.800
was divorcing her, three weeks after
he and Tara had begun their relationship.

609
00:44:00.519 --> 00:44:04.000
He told Sherry he was tired of
fighting and that being married had gotten the

610
00:44:04.039 --> 00:44:08.159
way of doing his job. Sherry
was confused and heartbroken. She knew her

611
00:44:08.199 --> 00:44:12.320
marriage was troubled, but she would
do anything she could to save it.

612
00:44:13.079 --> 00:44:16.440
She made an anonymous prayer request at
Destiny Church for members to pray for her

613
00:44:16.480 --> 00:44:21.440
marriage. A couple of weeks later, the pastor to whom she'd made the

614
00:44:21.440 --> 00:44:25.559
prayer request received the following text from
Sherry. Quote, just want to let

615
00:44:25.639 --> 00:44:29.559
you know it's going to be okay
with Chris and me. He's got some

616
00:44:29.679 --> 00:44:31.679
things to work through, but he's
willing to work it out. Thanks for

617
00:44:31.760 --> 00:44:35.960
your prayers. It's going to be
super tough, but it will work.

618
00:44:36.119 --> 00:44:40.000
Unquote. Sherry was optimistic, but
Chris had no intention of staying in the

619
00:44:40.039 --> 00:44:45.920
marriage. Just before Christmas, Chris
accompanied Joyce to Florida. He assured her

620
00:44:45.960 --> 00:44:50.960
safety aboard a cruise ship, and
then met Tara in Orlando and they went

621
00:44:51.000 --> 00:44:57.119
to a NKOTB concert. I don't
know what NKOTB is no new kids on

622
00:44:57.159 --> 00:45:01.880
the block. Okay, I got
Chris and Tara exchanged promise rings for Christmas?

623
00:45:01.960 --> 00:45:06.159
Oh my god, hey go,
so these two they really are like

624
00:45:06.199 --> 00:45:10.599
fifteen year old Sherry left home alone
again with the boys, pondered the state

625
00:45:10.679 --> 00:45:15.119
of her marriage. She began to
think that Chris was having an affair.

626
00:45:15.960 --> 00:45:17.760
She couldn't help, but wonder if
he was having an affair with Joyce.

627
00:45:19.639 --> 00:45:22.559
He was so loyal to her and
wouldn't quit. Joyce was well into her

628
00:45:22.599 --> 00:45:27.519
sixties, but she didn't know who
else it could be. Cherry reached out

629
00:45:27.559 --> 00:45:30.960
to her oldest friend for support.
She told Tara all about her deepest fears.

630
00:45:31.440 --> 00:45:36.239
Tara was a sympathetic year Oh boy, I bet yeah, I bet

631
00:45:36.360 --> 00:45:38.840
she was. You know, it's
the worst when that happens, Like when

632
00:45:38.880 --> 00:45:44.920
the best friend is involved and they're
like playing the sympathetic party and yeah,

633
00:45:45.000 --> 00:45:49.840
that's pretty sorrels. Meanwhile, Chris's
older brother, Keith, left his wife

634
00:45:49.960 --> 00:45:53.800
for another woman just before Christmas and
Mario, Sherry's brother, was arrested.

635
00:45:54.480 --> 00:45:59.840
Sherry was worried he would be sent
to prison. On December twenty first,

636
00:46:00.119 --> 00:46:04.079
Chris called Sherry from Florida and told
her he no longer loved her and wanted

637
00:46:04.079 --> 00:46:07.159
a divorce. He told Sherry that
she and the boys were keeping him from

638
00:46:07.199 --> 00:46:13.400
realizing God's destiny for his life.
Cherry told him that there was no way

639
00:46:13.480 --> 00:46:15.599
she would agree to a divorce.
She loved him too much to let him

640
00:46:15.599 --> 00:46:20.320
go. She wanted to work on
things. She begged him to go to

641
00:46:20.360 --> 00:46:24.119
marriage counseling, but he refused.
Cherry took the kids and went to Chicago

642
00:46:24.239 --> 00:46:29.519
a few days before Christmas. Being
with her family always made her feel better.

643
00:46:30.320 --> 00:46:32.840
She returned home and she and Chris
spent Christmas together, but he was

644
00:46:32.920 --> 00:46:38.440
cold and distant. Few words were
exchanged between them. Cherry confided in several

645
00:46:38.440 --> 00:46:44.159
friends about her broken heart and Chris's
request for a divorce. She asked many

646
00:46:44.199 --> 00:46:47.400
of her friends from church for prayers
for her marriage. So it's kind of

647
00:46:47.440 --> 00:46:52.480
interesting to me that Chris seemed like
he was asking for a divorce, because

648
00:46:52.480 --> 00:46:55.679
you said earlier that he didn't he
wouldn't want to do that because Joyce wouldn't

649
00:46:55.760 --> 00:47:00.119
approve exactly. But he did ask
for a divorce. And yeah, they

650
00:47:00.199 --> 00:47:05.559
kept talking about divorce, but I
think he was torn. He was,

651
00:47:05.639 --> 00:47:07.000
like I want a divorce, but
I know I'll lose my job, and

652
00:47:07.039 --> 00:47:12.440
he really I think he had mixed
feelings about the job too. I think

653
00:47:12.519 --> 00:47:15.400
he liked and he was thinking about
starting his own thing as well. Right,

654
00:47:15.519 --> 00:47:19.920
yeah, but he liked the status
of being, you know, Joyce's

655
00:47:19.960 --> 00:47:22.840
security guard. He was got to
travel, right, So yeah, I

656
00:47:22.880 --> 00:47:28.199
think he was really torn about what
to do. After the holidays, Chris

657
00:47:28.239 --> 00:47:31.480
received another message from his harassmer.
This time a type letter came in his

658
00:47:31.480 --> 00:47:37.159
mailbox and it said, fuck you
deny your God publicly or else, no

659
00:47:37.280 --> 00:47:42.440
more opportunities. Time is running out
for you and your family. Have a

660
00:47:42.440 --> 00:47:46.360
good time in India, motherfucker.
Like, these letters are so poorly written,

661
00:47:46.599 --> 00:47:52.679
and what is the letter writer supposedly
asking for for him to publicly denounce

662
00:47:52.800 --> 00:47:59.800
Joyce and just quit his job.
Chris had an upcoming trip to India with

663
00:48:00.400 --> 00:48:05.079
from January fifteenth to the eighteenth.
He took the letter to the Columbia Police

664
00:48:05.119 --> 00:48:09.039
Department and they agreed to make some
additional patrols during his absence, but they

665
00:48:09.039 --> 00:48:14.400
really didn't do anything else because remember
he had taken the emails there and they

666
00:48:14.440 --> 00:48:21.119
hadn't really done any investigation into them. Cherry continued to ask to attend marriage

667
00:48:21.119 --> 00:48:24.159
counseling, but Chris refused to go. He was adamant that he needed to

668
00:48:24.239 --> 00:48:30.159
end the marriage so that he could
realize my true destiny. He was still

669
00:48:30.199 --> 00:48:34.440
sleeping in the basement, but one
night he appeared in Cherry's bedroom for sex.

670
00:48:35.000 --> 00:48:37.559
He told her not to get the
wrong idea, he was just horny.

671
00:48:38.920 --> 00:48:43.639
Cherry began to put the pieces together
and suspected that Tara could be the

672
00:48:43.639 --> 00:48:49.039
new object of Chris's affection. She
realized that Chris had started talking about divorce

673
00:48:49.199 --> 00:48:52.360
after the trip to Florida. She
knew that Tara was beautiful and seductive and

674
00:48:52.639 --> 00:48:58.199
even a little jealous of her life. Scherry didn't like to keep things bottled

675
00:48:58.239 --> 00:49:01.960
up. She shared her suspicion with
several friends about her husband and Tara.

676
00:49:04.000 --> 00:49:06.599
She even said to one friend,
do you want to see a picture of

677
00:49:06.639 --> 00:49:09.880
my husband's new girlfriend? And I
think it was like Tara's picture on Facebook?

678
00:49:10.400 --> 00:49:15.039
In a hail mary attempt Sherry told
Chris's newly single brother Keith, about

679
00:49:15.039 --> 00:49:20.119
Tara. She sent him Tara's picture
and encouraged him to reach out to her,

680
00:49:20.719 --> 00:49:23.199
but Tara didn't bite. She was
taken, so she was trying to

681
00:49:23.239 --> 00:49:30.360
set up She was yeah, although
so like nothing happened, but months later

682
00:49:31.679 --> 00:49:37.679
some nudes of Tara were found on
Keith's phone. Chris told Cherry an old

683
00:49:37.719 --> 00:49:39.960
friend had reached out to him with
Super Bowl tickets and he was planning on

684
00:49:40.039 --> 00:49:45.519
going. Scherry knew the game was
being held in Tampa and he would probably

685
00:49:45.559 --> 00:49:49.519
be going with Tara. She tried
to talk him out of going. Sharry

686
00:49:49.679 --> 00:49:52.119
was desperate. She pulled the last
card out of her toolbox to try to

687
00:49:52.199 --> 00:49:58.320
salvage her marriage. She contacted Joyce
Meyer. Oh Boy. Chris was called

688
00:49:58.320 --> 00:50:01.320
into a meeting with Joyce the next
day. Joyce convinced him to give marriage

689
00:50:01.320 --> 00:50:07.000
counseling a try. He knew he
had no other choice. Joyce would likely

690
00:50:07.039 --> 00:50:10.400
fire or demote him if he got
a divorce. Here's a brief clip of

691
00:50:10.480 --> 00:50:15.639
Joyce talking about the situation. I
have to ask you, if the defendant

692
00:50:16.000 --> 00:50:19.880
were having an affair, if you
had known that at the time, and

693
00:50:19.920 --> 00:50:22.039
I understand you've testified that you didn't, what effect would that have had on

694
00:50:22.079 --> 00:50:30.159
his employment? If he would have
been having an adulterous affair while he was

695
00:50:30.159 --> 00:50:37.400
still married, then it could have
definitely affected his job. Were there persons

696
00:50:37.960 --> 00:50:40.760
over the years that were terminated in
situations like that, We had situations where

697
00:50:40.760 --> 00:50:45.719
they were Yes, and in fact, he was married during the period of

698
00:50:45.760 --> 00:50:47.000
time they'd worked for you, married
to Sherry Coleman. Correct. Yes.

699
00:50:47.039 --> 00:50:54.599
Were there other persons who had adulterous
affairs while married whose employment was terminated at

700
00:50:54.679 --> 00:51:00.840
Joyce Meyer Ministry? Yes? For
that reason. Yes, And now I

701
00:51:00.880 --> 00:51:02.960
have to ask you about the distinction
here. What if it was a divorce

702
00:51:04.079 --> 00:51:09.559
as opposed to an adulterous affair.
Each situation is handled totally separately based on

703
00:51:09.639 --> 00:51:14.880
the circumstances. We have many people
that work for us that have been divorced,

704
00:51:15.559 --> 00:51:20.199
and a person is not necessarily do
they lose their job because they get

705
00:51:20.920 --> 00:51:24.840
a divorce. It wouldn't have been
the divorce so much as the ammorality.

706
00:51:25.079 --> 00:51:29.559
So, for instance, if a
person in your employment, if their spouse

707
00:51:29.599 --> 00:51:32.960
filed for divorce against them, and
perhaps they had little control over that,

708
00:51:34.280 --> 00:51:38.239
you might leave them in your employment. That's possibility. So surprisingly, Chris

709
00:51:38.280 --> 00:51:42.840
came home and told Sherry that he
would go to counseling and try to make

710
00:51:42.920 --> 00:51:46.559
their marriage work. Sherry felt optimistic
and was confident things were going to get

711
00:51:46.559 --> 00:51:51.760
better. She told him go ahead
and go to Super Bowl. I trust

712
00:51:51.800 --> 00:51:55.360
you. Wow. Cherry sent Chris
a naked selfie while he was at the

713
00:51:55.360 --> 00:51:59.880
game. He was with Tara.
Of course, Tara saw the picture,

714
00:52:00.119 --> 00:52:04.519
grabbed Chris's phone and texted Sherry quote, Honey, you've really got to stop

715
00:52:04.559 --> 00:52:08.440
this. I'm not in love with
you anymore. Tara was becoming impatient.

716
00:52:08.760 --> 00:52:13.000
She wanted to get married and moved
to Illinois to be with Chris. She

717
00:52:13.159 --> 00:52:17.280
even made a wedding registry. She
and Chris already had a credit card together

718
00:52:17.360 --> 00:52:22.679
too to pay for Tara's travel expenses, and Chris also had a secret credit

719
00:52:22.719 --> 00:52:25.599
card that he hid from Sherry.
He used it to send surprise gifts to

720
00:52:25.639 --> 00:52:30.639
Tara, like lingerie, perfume,
and flowers. He'd even sent her a

721
00:52:30.719 --> 00:52:36.480
vibrator. He loved spoiling Tara,
all this effort to put into Tara,

722
00:52:36.559 --> 00:52:39.000
when if he put maybe you know, ten percent of that effort into his

723
00:52:39.119 --> 00:52:43.480
marriage, that he would have been
you know, they both would have been

724
00:52:43.480 --> 00:52:46.760
happier in the marriage. Tara told
him he needed to file for divorce by

725
00:52:46.880 --> 00:52:52.280
May fourth, or she was done. Chris's hands were tied. He loved

726
00:52:52.280 --> 00:52:55.480
the stature that his job at Joyce
Meyer gave him. He enjoyed ruling the

727
00:52:55.559 --> 00:53:00.199
ministry campus and being a representative for
such a successful woman. He knew that

728
00:53:00.280 --> 00:53:05.400
he would be demoted or fired if
he and Sherry divorced. He couldn't handle

729
00:53:05.440 --> 00:53:07.599
the thought of being demoted in his
job and losing the status that he had

730
00:53:07.599 --> 00:53:14.079
become an integral part of his identity. His job came with so many perks.

731
00:53:14.159 --> 00:53:17.320
Among them was playing in a celebrity
of football flag football game. Joyce

732
00:53:17.360 --> 00:53:22.239
sponsored an annual flag football game,
and he'd gotten to play with the likes

733
00:53:22.239 --> 00:53:27.239
of Kurt Warner, Donovan McNabb,
and Phil Simms. I don't know who

734
00:53:27.239 --> 00:53:30.559
those people are. I mean,
they're pretty famous people that would be that

735
00:53:30.599 --> 00:53:32.960
would be a fun perk to have
in a job, right, And I

736
00:53:34.000 --> 00:53:37.360
know, he said he got to
like he got to drive them around and

737
00:53:37.400 --> 00:53:40.679
spend the day with him, And
yeah, he really enjoyed that. Yeah,

738
00:53:40.800 --> 00:53:45.159
Chris was on his cell phone NonStop, texting, calling, and sending

739
00:53:45.280 --> 00:53:50.280
brisque pictures and videos to Tara.
He used his work cell phone, which

740
00:53:50.760 --> 00:53:53.719
if you're listening and you're having an
affair, don't do that. Remember,

741
00:53:53.960 --> 00:53:59.039
Cherry used to work for Joyce Meyer
too, and still had several good friends

742
00:53:59.079 --> 00:54:05.239
there. Christine Sencta paid employees cell
phone bills, and she noticed a dramatic

743
00:54:05.320 --> 00:54:09.440
uptick in Chris's cell phone data usage. She and Serry had had dinner together

744
00:54:09.519 --> 00:54:15.039
recently, and Scherry had told her
that their marriage was struggling. Christine shared

745
00:54:15.079 --> 00:54:20.440
the information about the cell phone with
Daniel Meyer, Joyce's son. He called

746
00:54:20.440 --> 00:54:23.760
the number that most frequently appeared on
Chris's bill. When Tara answered, he

747
00:54:23.920 --> 00:54:29.639
hung up. Daniel confronted Chris about
having an affair, but Chris lied,

748
00:54:29.840 --> 00:54:34.239
claiming Tara was an old friend he
wasn't having an affair. After that,

749
00:54:34.480 --> 00:54:38.519
Chris purchased a BlackBerry for personal use. He was excited because now he could

750
00:54:38.559 --> 00:54:43.760
send even better videos to Tara.
Once he sent her a five minute video

751
00:54:43.800 --> 00:54:46.760
of himself masturbating in the shower.
It was his gift to her. He

752
00:54:46.800 --> 00:54:52.119
said he'd never done that for anyone
else. She brought his wild side his

753
00:54:52.239 --> 00:54:59.480
true personality. Isn't that like almost
verbatim like Chris Watts, Yes, yeah,

754
00:54:59.480 --> 00:55:02.599
and Nicole, I mean it's very
similar, right, eerily similar?

755
00:55:02.719 --> 00:55:07.519
Yep. In February, Sherry approached
Chris about scheduling a family vacation for that

756
00:55:07.639 --> 00:55:13.360
upcoming summer with the boys to Disney
World. He agreed with hesitation. When

757
00:55:13.440 --> 00:55:16.880
Chris told Tara about the trip,
she was furious. She loved Disney and

758
00:55:16.920 --> 00:55:22.000
couldn't stand the thought of Chris taking
Sherry and the boys, and the trip

759
00:55:22.079 --> 00:55:24.559
reached the deadline of May fourth that
she had sut for Chris to end his

760
00:55:24.639 --> 00:55:30.079
marriage. She demanded Chris cancel the
trip. He refused because they would lose

761
00:55:30.119 --> 00:55:35.840
their deposit. Tara took the matter
into her own hands and called Disney and

762
00:55:35.920 --> 00:55:39.920
canceled the trip. Then she called
a travel agent and booked a cruise to

763
00:55:40.119 --> 00:55:45.960
Saint Thomas for her and Chris for
that same week in July. It's pretty

764
00:55:45.000 --> 00:55:50.000
bold. That was the other night
I was reading when I think you were

765
00:55:50.039 --> 00:55:52.320
in the bedroom, and I was
like my mouth dropped open, and I

766
00:55:52.360 --> 00:55:57.760
was like, I can't believe she
did that. Yeah, it's so.

767
00:55:58.280 --> 00:56:00.559
I was so horrible, Like she
can't stand the thought of Chris going to

768
00:56:00.599 --> 00:56:05.159
Disney World with his kids. That
is really horrible. And it's also a

769
00:56:05.159 --> 00:56:07.760
good way to turn him against her
as well, right, Like he's you

770
00:56:07.800 --> 00:56:13.440
know that can't be something attractive to
someone that you're that demanding and controlling.

771
00:56:13.639 --> 00:56:16.280
I think at that point she could
do anything, and chrisy was he was

772
00:56:16.280 --> 00:56:22.079
still like a schoolboy. Later that
month, friends and family were shocked to

773
00:56:22.119 --> 00:56:27.440
see Sherry's Facebook status changed from married
to single and her last name changed to

774
00:56:27.480 --> 00:56:31.159
Weiss, her previous surname. Cherry
had made the changes in hopes of deterring

775
00:56:31.199 --> 00:56:36.480
the person who was leaving her threatening
messages multiple times a day, among them

776
00:56:36.519 --> 00:56:40.199
messages like you're not good enough for
Chris and you don't deserve him. They

777
00:56:40.239 --> 00:56:45.679
didn't stop. Cherry eventually deleted her
Facebook account. Gosh, I wonder who

778
00:56:45.679 --> 00:56:50.000
would leave those messages? I can't
even imagine. In March, Chris and

779
00:56:50.039 --> 00:56:53.159
Tara met up in Arizona when he
attended a charity football event held by Kurt

780
00:56:53.199 --> 00:56:58.480
Warner. Tara attended the games,
and she and Chris even canoodle on the

781
00:56:58.519 --> 00:57:02.760
sidelines. They also had a tryst
in Hawaii that spring. In late March,

782
00:57:02.840 --> 00:57:07.960
Chris returned home after weeks of traveling
abroad with Joyce. He went into

783
00:57:07.960 --> 00:57:13.840
Sherry's bedroom and sexually assaulted her.
Later, Cherry called her friend Kathy Laplant,

784
00:57:14.039 --> 00:57:16.760
crying as she recounted the assault during
her drive to Chicago to see her

785
00:57:16.760 --> 00:57:22.280
mother. During that phone call,
Sherry told Kathy that if anything happened to

786
00:57:22.320 --> 00:57:25.719
her, it was Chris. Hear
that so often. I hate it so

787
00:57:25.800 --> 00:57:30.360
much. I know. Yeah.
In late April, the Colemans received another

788
00:57:30.480 --> 00:57:37.119
threatening typed letter in their mailbox,
fuck you. The letter began, I

789
00:57:37.159 --> 00:57:39.280
am giving you the last warning.
You have not listened to me, and

790
00:57:39.320 --> 00:57:44.079
you have not changed your ways.
I have warned you to stop traveling and

791
00:57:44.119 --> 00:57:47.599
to stop carrying on with this fake
religious life of stealing people's money. You

792
00:57:47.679 --> 00:57:52.840
think you are so special to do
what you do protecting or think you are

793
00:57:52.880 --> 00:57:57.079
protecting her. She is a bitch
and not worth you doing it. Stop

794
00:57:57.119 --> 00:58:00.719
today or else. I know your
schedule. You can hide from me.

795
00:58:00.840 --> 00:58:04.559
Ever, I'm always watching. I
know when you leave in the morning,

796
00:58:04.599 --> 00:58:07.880
and I know when you stay home. I saw you leave this morning.

797
00:58:07.079 --> 00:58:10.760
I will be watching you. Better
stop traveling and doing what you are doing.

798
00:58:12.360 --> 00:58:15.079
This is my last morning. Your
worst nightmare is about to happen.

799
00:58:16.599 --> 00:58:21.840
Chris went to the police station and
dropped off the letter with Officer Sean Westfall.

800
00:58:22.840 --> 00:58:27.119
Officer Westfall noticed that the address on
the letter was the same street that

801
00:58:27.199 --> 00:58:31.480
his friend, Detective Justin Barlow lived
on. Officer Westfall went to talk with

802
00:58:31.679 --> 00:58:36.639
Justin. Yeah, Justin said he
knew who Chris was, but he didn't

803
00:58:36.679 --> 00:58:39.960
know him well. They'd lived on
the same street for years. Justin had

804
00:58:39.960 --> 00:58:45.119
given a friendly wave to Chris numerous
times, but eventually gave up, writing

805
00:58:45.159 --> 00:58:50.000
him off as unfriendly and arrogant.
But Justin had an idea. He knew

806
00:58:50.079 --> 00:58:53.360
that a window in his son's bedroom
looked down to the Coleman's driveway and mailbox.

807
00:58:54.000 --> 00:58:59.599
He suggested mounting a camera near the
window to capture the Coleman's letter writer.

808
00:59:00.360 --> 00:59:04.639
Chris agreed to the plan. Justin
gave Chris his cell phone number if

809
00:59:04.639 --> 00:59:08.119
he ever needed help or felt unsafe. After the most recent letter, Chris

810
00:59:08.159 --> 00:59:14.079
finally installed a security system at his
house. I think we're going to stop

811
00:59:14.119 --> 00:59:17.679
there. Okay, what do you
think so far of Chris Coleman. I

812
00:59:17.719 --> 00:59:21.760
think he's a horrible, horrible person. I think he's going to get more

813
00:59:21.800 --> 00:59:25.280
horrible in part two. Yeah,
he's pretty unlikable. Yeah, very unlikable.

814
00:59:28.119 --> 00:59:30.159
So you're headed to France. How
much French do you know? I

815
00:59:30.159 --> 00:59:34.239
know, you know a little French. I know almost no French. Really,

816
00:59:34.280 --> 00:59:36.800
I took one year in high school. Oh that's right. You only

817
00:59:36.800 --> 00:59:38.440
took one year of four language in
high school. Yeah, isn't that sad?

818
00:59:39.079 --> 00:59:43.159
It's not sad. It was just
like I think when I was in

819
00:59:43.239 --> 00:59:46.000
high school, which was four hundred
and twelve years ago, we had we

820
00:59:46.039 --> 00:59:49.320
didn't have to take four years.
But if you were going to college,

821
00:59:49.519 --> 00:59:51.480
like, oh, yeah, you
need four years. And I don't think

822
00:59:51.480 --> 00:59:53.119
I had to take any if I
didn't want to. I think I took

823
00:59:53.159 --> 00:59:57.559
one year just because I thought it
was a good idea, and then I

824
00:59:57.599 --> 01:00:02.639
didn't really enjoy it, so I
didn't go back say something French blue,

825
01:00:02.880 --> 01:00:07.800
the sky is blue, the notebook
is blue. That's right, that's right.

826
01:00:07.960 --> 01:00:10.039
I mean I don't know French,
but I know remember well you know

827
01:00:10.159 --> 01:00:15.360
hi Hello? Yeah, yeah,
yeah, I know enough to say,

828
01:00:15.480 --> 01:00:19.280
like, yeah, thank you.
I probably want to bring back any French

829
01:00:19.320 --> 01:00:22.199
bake goods because you're going to be
gone a whole other week. Yeah,

830
01:00:22.320 --> 01:00:25.440
I'll bring you back some fish and
chips from London and put them in your

831
01:00:25.440 --> 01:00:30.519
pocket. Yeah. Sure, they'll
be delicious by the time I get back.

832
01:00:30.800 --> 01:00:32.760
I could go for some fish and
chips, but maybe Yeah, maybe

833
01:00:32.760 --> 01:00:35.760
some day I'll go with you.
Well, I do have a colleague that

834
01:00:35.800 --> 01:00:38.159
lives in Ireland that's going to be
in London, and she told me she's

835
01:00:38.159 --> 01:00:43.000
going to bring me some Irish snacks, so that's amazing. Yeah, I'm

836
01:00:43.000 --> 01:00:45.000
looking forward to that. That's very
Irish. I have no idea. I

837
01:00:45.039 --> 01:00:52.320
don't know what to expect, Guinness. Really it could work, huh,

838
01:00:52.000 --> 01:00:54.719
I don't know. I would like
to go to Ireland. My daughter went

839
01:00:54.760 --> 01:00:58.440
to Ireland, she did. Yeah, I would love to go to Ireland.

840
01:00:59.079 --> 01:01:01.559
I did want to mention the last
episode that we recorded. I think

841
01:01:01.559 --> 01:01:07.440
it was the last episode we had
talked about something negative that someone had said

842
01:01:07.440 --> 01:01:13.360
to us, and our intent wasn't
We weren't looking for looking for sympathy.

843
01:01:13.639 --> 01:01:15.440
It was just we wanted to make
it clear that we didn't plagiarize, because

844
01:01:15.440 --> 01:01:21.039
that's, you know, kind of
a bad accusation. But to all you

845
01:01:21.239 --> 01:01:27.119
view amazing sweethearts that sent us messages
or I think we got to pot a

846
01:01:27.159 --> 01:01:29.760
couple of nice reviews out of it, we thank you. Yeah, that

847
01:01:29.880 --> 01:01:32.320
is so nice, so much.
You guys are so generous to us and

848
