I just remember it being stressful, like you just didn't know if you were going to get like if some people were going to get a lot of Valentines and you were only going to get a couple. And I don't really remember, but I'm sure I didn't get I'm sure I was not like at the top of the class in terms of vale Do.

6:16 While I'm going to tell you a story today about another Richard who who had a not very good Valentine's Day, hmm, Okay, Before I start, I should say that it's possible that you've heard the story before. If you google good true crime stories about Valentine's Day, there's not a lot of them, so it's possible that a lot of people might know this story already. Valentine's Day should be a day of long stem crimson roses and pristine white boxes tied with a pretty bow, heart shaped boxes filled with delectable mouth watering chocolates, porge champagne cascading over a crystal flute, and whispered sweet nothings. It's a reminder for couples both new and old, to take a beat, slow down, and remember why you fell love. It's a time to reminisce about the butterflies, the racing hearts, the first sparks of love to savor a romantic candlelight meal, an intimate bubble bath, or a slow dance in the kitchen to your song.

Stacy had spent the weekend as caregiver to her grandparents and they hadn't had any time to themselves. Richard cooked dinner for Stacy and her grandparents, and then he headed to the park for their rendezvous. She had to wait for the night nurse to arrive before she could leave. She told Richard she'd see him in fifteen minutes or so. As she maneuvered down the curvy dark road to the meeting spot, a boat launch in a small park in Lollly, Georgia, she had a jolt of fear by what. Appeared before her. In the hazy light of her high beams, she saw the form of Richard, her beloved fifth husband, lying on the ground near his truck, his glasses thrown from his face.

Heart attack, she thought to herself as she sprang from her car and rushed to his side while she dialed nine one one. Did you find him, Stacy? Oh? I did. As I pulled. It to the bark, I thought it did. I put that I could see him laying on. The clown and I got my god. I rode around him, My god nine one one. Stacy, a nurse, kneeled down and felt her vital signs. Richard was lifeless and cold to the touch, a pool of dark blood surrounding his body. She was shocked by his gruesome appearance. He'd been shot twice in the face and three times in the chest. Who would kill her sweet devoted husband of two years.

She endlessly searched for a father figure. Things became even more complicated after she was sexually abused by a family member. Stacy has said that she's been haunted by this ever since. Though her mother later remarried, Stacy didn't connect to her stepfather. When she was seventeen, she eloped with her high school boyfriend. They quickly realized they were too young and divorced after two years of marriage. In nineteen ninety one, Stacy married for the second time. She was twenty. Soon after, Stacy became pregnant.

11:20 A year after her son was born, her marriage again ended in divorce. So it's like two years as that sort of her standard so far. Then twenty two, Stacy decided to go to nursing school. She graduated from nursing school and began her career. In nineteen ninety seven, Stacy married for a third time, This would be her shortest marriage yet, it lasted only six weeks. Another brief relationship resulted in a second pregnancy and another son. Stacy was now a single parent to two children, but she was determined to make a good life for her little family. She was able to secure a higher paying job at Georgia Spine and Neurosurgery Center into calib County as an office manager and surgical assistant. She was doing so well financially that she started buying rental properties. Stacy was thriving in her career, but still longed for companionship. In two thousand and one, thirty year old Stacy married for a fourth time and had another son. Stacy and her husband moved into a beautiful colonial home in Snellville, Georgia, about thirty miles outside of Atlanta. Sadly, by two thousand and four, Stacy's marriage unraveled again and she filed for divorce number four.

Born on June twenty fifth, nineteen sixty three, in glen Ridge, New Jersey, Richard was the son of Marian and ed Sheck. He attended Auburn University, where he earned a degree in art. But Richard wasn't just creative. He was kind, generous, and had an adventurous spirit. He was the type of guy who was always willing to lend a hand, A true mister Fixett who loved to tinker with just about anything. He had a passion for hot air ballooning, exploring the winding roads of North Georgia on his motorcycle, cooking up delicious meals, and playing soccer.

Richard and Stacy met at the spinal clinic where she worked and he was a patient. From the moment Richard met Stacy, he was smitten. They both had a love for adventure, spending their time riding motorcycles through winding roads and jet skiing on the lake. They enjoyed meeting up in secret places to make out. Things moved fast. As soon as Stacy's divorce from husband number four was final, Richard moved in with her and her three sons, who ranged in age from two to thirteen. But he just was trying to be thorough he was one or the other were both. Maybe bo He even legally adopted the two youngest boys, solidifying his commitment to their family. Why did he only adopt the two youngest men boys? You know, to adopt a child, it's a delicate procedure and probably one of the fathers didn't want to give up. Oh okay, yeah, yeah, makes sense. To the outside world. They look like the perfect family. Stacy's friends and family loved Richard and were hopeful that this marriage would be the one that lasted. But as we all know, in the world of love Mary Kill, perfect families don't exist.

15:25 On Valentine's Weekend twenty ten, Stacy was caring for her elderly grandparents. Richard offered to come over to cook dinner for them all. They had decided to meet after dinner for a rendezvous to exchange Valentine cards and have a quick hookup before heading home. Do you know what I mean by hookup? It sounds like they were going to make out. They decided to meet at the park, about fifteen minutes from her grandparents' home. Belton Bridge Park isn't your typical picnic and playground kind of park. It was basically just an area to launch your boat into the Chattahoochee River from Mote, unpaved and pitch dark at night. During the rainy season, it often flooded, making it nearly impossible for police to patrol the park. The park had a reputation.

16:11 Teenagers went there to party, drink, and do drugs. Bodies had been dumb there, and Richard was actually the fifth person to be murdered in that very spot. After Stacy found Richard dead at the park, the police investigation ensued. The police thought that the five shots fired into Richard were overkilled, a crime of passion, not the work of a hired hitman. After the devastating night, Stacy went to the local police department to be interviewed. While there, police downloaded the data from Stacy's cell phone. During the interview, she said that she was trying to spice up her boring marriage to Richard by meeting for sex at the park on Valentine's Day. In their early days of dating, they used to hook up in unusual places. I know you're probably gonna want to tell a story here, but I'm going to ask you not to. She became frustrated with Richard and his complacency. He'd been unemployed or underemployed for years. He managed the household, but Stacy wanted more from him. She worked a stressful job with long hours and took care of her grandparents too. Here's a brief clip from Stacy's police interrogation.

17:18 He was like, come meet me at the park. You know it's all secluded. You know it'll mean we'll exchange our Valentines. And when he gave me a kiss, he was like, and maybe even make auderly, you know, I mean, I think I probably pulled out of the driveway at about nine twenty or so. I called Richard and went to voicemail, and I didn't know why, and I didn't leave a message, and I left. I knew something was wrong. I could see I saw his truck immediately because the lights were on, and so I pulled down and I headed right towards his truck. But as soon as I might, I can see him laying on the ground.

18:01 And I just say something about Stacy. My observation. I have no idea where this case is going to go. I'm not familiar with it. I don't know what's going to happen. But her nine one one call and that clip that you play, we played just there. She seems to like over explain a lot, like on the nine one one call, they were like, what time did you find him? And she went on this whole long thing. But while I did this, and I got out of my car, and then I did this, and I did this, and kind of the same thing there. It's like, you know that our show is called love Mary Kill. And I sometimes it's not the spouse, but anyway, let's see what happens. You're right, though, over explaining is often a sign of someone hiding something right. During the police interview, Stacy admitted that she'd been having an affair for about six months with a man that she worked with, name Juan Raye boy One, Muscular and tattooed, was a stark contrast from bespectacled Richard with his middle aged punch.

18:56 I'm sorry, Richard, that wasn't very nice to. Stacy had been bankrolling Juan's lifestyle. He lived in a house she owned with his family. She also paid for his truck and most of his bills. It'd even taken a vacation together to Las Vegas three weeks before Valentine's Day. She rented an apartment for the sole purpose of meeting up for sex with one. Stacy admitted to police that Juan knew the time and place of her planned rendezvous with Richard, although there was no way he could kill someone, she claimed, Ah, so. She was like leading a double life. Here kind of and she has three kids. That's wild. After I finished writing this episode, I learned a few more things. Stacy and Juan had actually been involved in a relationship before Richard. He was an ex boyfriend, and sudden they kind of rekindled their romance. Police arrived at Wan's house at four am in the early morning hours of February fifteenth. They pounded on the door to arouse him from sleep, but he didn't answer the door. The next day, police showed up with a spinal clinic to bring one to the police station for questioning. It might have been a coincidence, but overnight he trimmed his full beard down to a sparse go tee. At all, he denied any involvement in Richard's murder. In fact, he had a solid alibi. He'd been with his son and ex wife at the time of the murder. One and his ex wife were living together in Stacy's house trying.

20:23 To work on their marriage. Probably not very hard though, because he was. Having an affair. I guess wow. When she learned of the affair between Stacy and Juan, she was not happy, but she did confirm his alibi. When given a polygraphic examination, the results were inconclusive, but police felt that he wasn't their man, and they were right. Juan Mayiz was an innocent man. Initially, Richard's family thought that he was a victim of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. They couldn't think of anyone who would be motivated to kill this kind, generous man. Richard's wallet, watch, and wedding ring were still on his person, and nothing was missing from his forty thousand dollars truck.

21:03 And I think there was even forty dollars cash on the dashboard and that wasn't taken. Police quickly rolled out a robbery. Money didn't appear to be the motive here. The thick mud at the boat launch where Richard was murdered revealed three sets of tire tracks. Police could account for Stacey and Richard's tire tracks, but the third set remained a mystery. The most promising lead was the tire tracks, but investigators could not find a match for them. They visited tire shops and dealerships in Vain. It took weeks of persistence, but they were finally able to narrow the tire down to the good Year Integrity. But they still didn't know what kind of car was involved or who was driving it. If they could decipher that, they'd have the murderer. Do anythink good Year Integrity is a good name for a tire. Yeah, that's a really good name for tire. We'll be back after a break.

22:00 Instead on the mysteries, just sun. Instead of the usual black attire. Richard's family wanted his funeral to be a celebration of his vibrant personality. They asked everyone to wear their favorite colors, a fitting tribute to his love of life and all things colorful. The service was held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Snellville, where friends and family came together to honor Richard in a way that truly reflected his spirit. The pallbearers were all Boy Scouts. After the funeral, to celebrate his love of color and balloons, attendees launched helium balloons into the sky with messages written on them to Richard.

Yeah, that's a little strange. I'm sure. They were over a wide open space with no people underneath. Richard's family later said that Stacy was overly dramatic at the funeral and any of the events starting Richard. An employee who worked in the IT department of Georgia Spine and Neurosurgery Center, the office that Stacy managed, called investigators with an interesting finding. It was May twenty ten when he was cleaning out old email files and noticed that Stacy had no emails from February twelfth through fourteenth zero.

23:41 They had been completely deleted from the system. But of course getting rid of an email isn't as easy as hitting delete. A search warrant was obtained and investigators gained access to four thousand of Stacy's emails. What they found led to the biggest break in the case yet. An email to Stacy from her bank in late January confirmed a transfer of eighty nine hundred and two dollars between Stacy and Lenitra Ross and there was another transfer to Lenitra on February twelfth for eleven hundred dollars, so a total of ten thousand dollars. Well ten thousand and two dollars, but who's counting. Police were quickly able to connect Lenitra to Stacy Sek. Lenitra, thirty, worked in the medical billing department at the clinic that Stacey ran. They were good friends. Lenitra lived in one of Stacy's rental properties. Lenitra was happy to cooperate with the investigation. She had an easy explanation about the transfer of funds. She had installed new flooring in the rental house and replaced the roof. The transfer from Stacy reimbursed Lenitra for the upgrades. It made perfect sense to the police.

24:49 I am curious if the police asked to see receipts. I am curious about that too. I'm also curious about how the it person happened to notice there were no emails on these two days. It just it seems really weird that. Would like to cleaning up the files. Cleaning up the files, you don't like go through them day by day. You just well, maybe this IT employee was suspicious. Well, yes, maybe maybe they were. Investigators were stuck and grasping at straws with no new leads in a hail Mary, they sought a search warrant for a tower dump, a log of all the outgoing calls from a cell phone tower near the crime scene. They thought the killer must have been in the area anticipating Richard's arrival, and made a phone call while they lay in wait. The area was remote and the tower didn't receive an abundance of calls, but there were still thousands of calls to sort through.

25:43 Investigators cross checked the two hundred and fifty contacts from Stacy Check's phone with the calls from the cell tower. They found a match. The contact was entered in Stacy's phone as mister Results. The detective googled mister Results and found him. Reginald Coleman, a thirty six year old personal trainer and former boxer who lived in Atlanta. Reginald had a criminal record and had done time in prison for possession with intent to distribute, although since his release he had tried to stay out of trouble by teaching boxing to troubled youth. Reggie's on again, off again girlfriend was Leniitra Ross Stacy, Sheck's friend and co worker who it's all coming together now, isn't it.

26:24 In the days leading up to Richard's murder, Stacey had withdrawn eighty nine hundred dollars from her bank account transferred it to Leniitra, who in turn transferred it to Reggie, but that was only a partial payment. The balance would be paid in real estate. Stacy was going to hand over Lenitra's rental house to her, valued around one hundred thousand dollars, and she was going to sign over her grandparents and pala to Reggie, valued at about sixteen thousand dollars. Because Reggie had a criminal record, he couldn't legally buy a gun, Stacy gave him six hundred dollars to buy one for the murder under the table. Once the deed was done, Reggie was to dispose of the gun and make sure it couldn't be tied back to them, So I don't know what you pay.

It seems like so Reggie is getting like a sixteen thousand dollar car plus ten thousand dollars on top of it, and Leanitra is getting a one hundred thousand dollar house. Yeah, that's crazy. Investigators were having a hard time tying Reggie directly to Richard's murder. They were still puzzled about the car that left the third set of tire tracks in the mud at the boat launch. They did not match Reggie or Leniitra's tires. It wasn't until a relative of Stacy's tip police off that the case finally came together. Stacy's cousin noticed that the car owned by Stacy's grandparents was missing.

27:51 Stacy was supposed to sell the car to pay off some of their medical bills, but had been procrastinating on getting it done to the annoyance of her family. But surely after Valentine's Day, Stacy finally sold the car, but never handed over the money. When investigators tracked down the car, a two thousand and nine Impella, it had good year Integrity tires that were in exact match for the third set of tire tracks at the boat launch, but how could they prove that Reggie was driving the Impala. Detectives looked at cell phone data from the tower again and determined that at six forty two, Reggie called Lenitra, who then called Stacy at six forty five, and then at six forty eight, Lanitra called Reggie back. Investigators determined that the first call that Reggie made to Lenitra was to verify that the plan was still ag Lenitra confirmed with Stacy that they were moving forward with the plan, and then she called Reggie and told him to be in place at the boat launch by eight thirty. Richard had left Stacy's grandparents' house at around eight fifteen. At eight forty, mister Results made a twenty eight second call to Lenitra and told her that he'd finished the job. She then texted Stacy quote, got to tell you I'm coming in late for work tomorrow. By the way, Happy Valentine's Day.

The plan seemed to. Go off without a hitch at first, but Stacy was furious with Reggie. Richard was supposed to be killed with just one shot to the head. It was meant to be quick and painless, but Reggie ended up shooting Richard multiple times. On top of that, Reggie was supposed to take Richard's belongings to make it look like a robbery gone wrong, but ironically this actually worked in his favor when police thought it was a crime of passion. I think what happened was Richard was waiting there when he saw the car pull up. He recognized the Impala, and he was like, oh, maybe Stacy's driving Grandma's car for some reason. So he got out, and Reggie wasn't expecting him to get out, and so he kind of panicked and he shot it.

30:00 Too many times. Reginald Coleman was arrested on May twenty fifth, twenty ten, for the murder of Richard Sheck. Lnitra Ross was arrested just a few hours later. Lenitra was closelipped and unwilling to turn on her friend Stacy Sheck. Two days later, on May twenty seventh, twenty ten, Stacy was arrested at the clinic where she worked while she was prepping to assist in a surgery. Stacy had gotten a heads up somehow that Lenitra had been arrested, and she locked herself into a room and refused to come out. Well this boy, but she. Realized there was no way to escape, so eventually she came out. Y to come out, she traded her scrubs for an orange jumpsuit. I stole that line from the show's snap It's.

30:45 A good line. Two years later, in May twenty twelve, the case against Lenitra was the first to make it to trial. The stur witness in the case, Stacy Sheck to take the death penalty off the table. She made a plea deal with the state to tell against Reggie and Lenitra. Wow, it really surprised me. That does too. I mean, she's kind of the mastermind behind all this. You think it would go the other way. Before she testified, she told the court quote, I'm going to testify truthfully for Richard. It's all I can give his mom and his family and the children. All I can give them is the truth, sure Stacey, Wow, yeah, so noble. During her testimony, Stacy tried to defend her decision to have her husband killed. She said that her second son, age eleven, had begun acting out. Stacy claimed that he came to her and told her that Richard was sexually abusing him. Ah, this is horrible that she would do this.

The defense pointed out that Stacy continued to leave her sons alone with Richard even though she thought they were being sexually abused. When Stacy confided to Lenitra about her son being sexually abused, she volunteered that her boyfriend could take care of the situation for her. On May twenty second, twenty twelve, Leniitro was found guilty of first degree murder. She was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. She has never admitted to her part in the murder plot. Leniitra was offered a plea deal. If she testified against Reggie, she would be given a twenty year sentence. Lenitra and Reggie had a five year old son together, and she couldn't bring herself to testify against him.

I believe he did that at the very last minute, like the trial was set to happen, and then he took Yeah. He also received a life sentence without the possibility of parole. In December twenty v twelve, Stacey, now forty three, pleaded guilty to murder with malice and forethought. In the intervening time before the trial, Stacy's son, whom she'd alleged was the victim of child sexual abuse, had been interviewed by police.

Before Stacey was sentenced, the courtroom was filled with emotional victim impact statements, both written and delivered in person, from Richard Sheck's friends, co workers, and family. The words were often choked back through tears as they described Richard as a beloved friend, uncle, and stepfather. One former coworker shared quote, we have all felt emptiness in our lives not having Richard around. Family members, including Stacy's sons and her mother, asked for mercy for Stacy. Her ten year old son wrote a heartbreaking letter that read quote, I miss her every hour of every day, just like Daddy Ritchie.

After Stacy's sentencing, Carol Fillingham, Richard's sister, told the Atlanta Journal Constitution, quote, Richard was always there. He would help anybody do anything. It will never be behind us. We're trying to get a little closure to it. It was such a heinous murder done to someone that did not deserve it at all.

Why did Richard have to die? What was Stacy's motive? Once she was situated in her new forever home at the state prison, Richard's sister visited her. She wanted to know why Stacy killed this good man who was adored by many, especially Stacy's own sons. In a rare moment of honesty, Stacy said that because of her own actions, she knew that she could not divorce Richard without giving up custody of her children. She was not willing to do that, and Richard's five hundred thousand dollars life insurance policy was likely further motivation. After Richard's murder, the Belton Bridge Park was shut down temporarily for years. It had been a hot spot of crime, raising concern in the community. The Army Corps of Engineers stepped in and paved the area and installed lighting to improve safety and discouraged a legal activity.

Such a hard, hard thing it is.

I don't know, maybe le Niatra deserved a little bit less because maybe she thought that Richard was sexually abusing Stacy's son, and so maybe in her mind at least maybe she thought, you know, she it was a it was a fair thing to do, but right. And Reggie too had been in foster care, and it's possible that he was upset when he heard that the young boys were being musted and he wanted to step into.
