Michael Severance was a decorated Air Force staff sergeant from Lee, Maine — a young man known for his integrity, his loyalty, and his love of dancing the Texas two-step. In January 2005, just months into a troubled marriage to a West Texas veterinarian named Wendi Davidson, Mike vanished without a trace. His truck, his wallet, and his cell phone were all left behind. For weeks, investigators chased dead ends while Mike's family in Maine waited desperately for answers.

What they eventually found would shock everyone who had known him. What followed was a complex investigation, a bitter custody battle over Mike's infant son, and a legal case full of twists that left his family feeling that true justice was never fully served.

Mike survived five combat deployments to some of the most dangerous places on earth. Evil found him in his own home.

00:00:00.240 --> 00:00:01.879
Hi, I'm Rich and I'm Tina.

2
00:00:02.040 --> 00:00:04.320
If there's one thing we've learned in over twenty years of.

3
00:00:04.240 --> 00:00:07.839
Marriage, it said, some days you'll feel like killing your husband, and.

4
00:00:07.799 --> 00:00:09.640
Some days you'll feel like killing your wife.

5
00:00:09.960 --> 00:00:12.119
Welcome to love, Mary Kill.

6
00:00:27.399 --> 00:00:29.519
Hey Tina, Hey Rich. How are you today?

7
00:00:29.600 --> 00:00:30.679
I'm pretty good? How about you?

8
00:00:30.839 --> 00:00:32.719
I am doing good. I'm happy to be back here

9
00:00:32.759 --> 00:00:35.119
in the light Bulb lab with you to record part two.

10
00:00:35.560 --> 00:00:36.960
I can't wait to hear what happens.

11
00:00:37.119 --> 00:00:39.439
We had a little road trip in between parts one

12
00:00:39.479 --> 00:00:42.600
and part two. We did kind of a spontaneous road trip.

13
00:00:43.119 --> 00:00:44.799
You brought it up at the end of part one.

14
00:00:44.880 --> 00:00:46.880
You said, what are we going to do with our weekend?

15
00:00:46.920 --> 00:00:49.600
And you suggested a road trip, And within an hour

16
00:00:49.719 --> 00:00:50.520
we were in the car, we.

17
00:00:50.520 --> 00:00:52.600
Were on the road. Yeah, and we were back here

18
00:00:52.640 --> 00:00:54.920
within twenty four hours. But I feel like we accomplished

19
00:00:54.920 --> 00:00:57.960
a lot, and that twenty four hours because the BUCkies

20
00:00:58.200 --> 00:01:02.000
this is so we are so But BUCkies opened three

21
00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:04.840
hours from ups and it really was like exactly three hours,

22
00:01:05.480 --> 00:01:07.319
and so we decided, oh, what the heck, let's just

23
00:01:07.319 --> 00:01:09.120
go to BUCkies. But it wasn't like we were just

24
00:01:09.239 --> 00:01:11.519
going to BUCkies. There's also like it's in a we

25
00:01:13.280 --> 00:01:17.359
did oh my gosh. But there's a lovely area called

26
00:01:17.359 --> 00:01:18.239
the Yellow Springs.

27
00:01:18.359 --> 00:01:20.799
Yellow Springs is the town just outside of Dayton, and

28
00:01:20.840 --> 00:01:23.359
I used to live right near there, so kind.

29
00:01:23.200 --> 00:01:25.200
Of my old stayed there. We went from Hike and

30
00:01:25.400 --> 00:01:28.439
we had a really nice time. We stayed. Originally I

31
00:01:28.439 --> 00:01:30.920
thought we were air being being a church, but it

32
00:01:30.920 --> 00:01:32.879
was actually a temple. But still it was.

33
00:01:33.120 --> 00:01:35.920
It was a converted temple, I guess.

34
00:01:35.959 --> 00:01:37.959
Yeah, And I was a little It looked a little

35
00:01:38.079 --> 00:01:39.840
like it could be creepy and we didn't get there

36
00:01:39.920 --> 00:01:41.840
till after dark, but it was actually lovely. We had

37
00:01:41.840 --> 00:01:42.599
a really nice time.

38
00:01:42.680 --> 00:01:45.280
Yeah. We have, of course talked about BUCkies over and

39
00:01:45.319 --> 00:01:45.959
over again.

40
00:01:46.040 --> 00:01:48.079
This will probably be the last time we talk.

41
00:01:47.959 --> 00:01:49.920
About it, I think, so we've overdone it a little.

42
00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:52.280
But we did go. It was our first visit to

43
00:01:52.319 --> 00:01:55.159
a Bucky's and it was wow. It was crazy.

44
00:01:55.280 --> 00:01:58.079
It had literally opened to the public on Monday.

45
00:01:58.840 --> 00:02:00.560
I did not know what to act back. I mean,

46
00:02:00.599 --> 00:02:02.760
I've read a little bit about BUCkies, but it was

47
00:02:03.079 --> 00:02:06.519
way beyond It was bigger and more crowded than I

48
00:02:06.560 --> 00:02:07.879
could ever have imagined.

49
00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:10.319
Yeah, I have to imagine that it was so crowded

50
00:02:10.360 --> 00:02:13.879
because they had just opened. People like us were just curious.

51
00:02:13.919 --> 00:02:16.000
But it was literally elbow to elbow it was.

52
00:02:16.080 --> 00:02:18.960
Yeah. You couldn't even get close to like the food,

53
00:02:19.159 --> 00:02:21.719
like the hot food. Yeah, it was insane. Yeah.

54
00:02:21.759 --> 00:02:23.319
I was a little disappointed because I feel like I

55
00:02:23.319 --> 00:02:26.199
didn't I couldn't even tell what was being offered so

56
00:02:26.280 --> 00:02:29.719
many people were surrounding. But I did grab a brisket

57
00:02:29.800 --> 00:02:32.639
sandwich and it was as good as everyone said says

58
00:02:32.719 --> 00:02:35.360
it is. It was delicious. What else did we grab?

59
00:02:35.360 --> 00:02:37.919
We grabbed, but we both said, you take a basket

60
00:02:37.919 --> 00:02:39.360
and I'm going to take a basket and we'll see

61
00:02:39.400 --> 00:02:42.039
what we both come up with. And I think we

62
00:02:42.120 --> 00:02:44.479
got some beat a couple of bags of beaver nuggets,

63
00:02:44.560 --> 00:02:47.719
and I don't know, just a bunch of random stuff

64
00:02:47.800 --> 00:02:50.560
to random stuff. But you guys have been so generous

65
00:02:50.879 --> 00:02:53.199
with us throughout the years. I feel like we kind of.

66
00:02:53.319 --> 00:02:56.319
Tried a lot of stuff. Yeah, but it was good

67
00:02:56.319 --> 00:02:57.560
to experience it for real.

68
00:02:57.840 --> 00:03:00.680
So you had just gotten a new car, yeah, an

69
00:03:00.680 --> 00:03:04.840
electric car, And my understanding was the electric car would

70
00:03:04.840 --> 00:03:08.319
make it from our house to BUCkies and then we

71
00:03:08.360 --> 00:03:11.039
would charge the car when we got to BUCkies because

72
00:03:11.080 --> 00:03:15.199
they usually have electric chargers. Yeah, that's not exactly what.

73
00:03:15.120 --> 00:03:18.000
It didn't work out quite that way. Yeah, well it

74
00:03:18.039 --> 00:03:19.719
was fun to take the brand new car, but yeah,

75
00:03:19.719 --> 00:03:22.280
I didn't know what to expect in terms of miles because.

76
00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:23.759
Well, people are going to ask what the car is.

77
00:03:23.800 --> 00:03:25.800
So it's a Kia EV six.

78
00:03:26.080 --> 00:03:28.560
And I actually have a Kia too, So now we

79
00:03:28.599 --> 00:03:30.960
are Familyikia family with.

80
00:03:30.919 --> 00:03:32.919
An electric car. You don't It tells you, you know

81
00:03:32.960 --> 00:03:36.319
how many miles roughly are left, but you really don't

82
00:03:36.360 --> 00:03:38.919
know for sure. And when you're on the freeway, you're driving,

83
00:03:38.960 --> 00:03:41.560
you know, seventy five eighty miles an hour.

84
00:03:41.960 --> 00:03:45.080
And your previous electric vehicle was fairly reliable and it

85
00:03:45.120 --> 00:03:48.240
would say you should stop at this exit to charge

86
00:03:48.520 --> 00:03:50.080
right and this car, so.

87
00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:53.280
This is a whole different like network of charging stations

88
00:03:53.280 --> 00:03:55.319
that I've never used before. And we stopped at one

89
00:03:55.400 --> 00:03:57.240
and it was like in the middle of nowhere.

90
00:03:57.319 --> 00:03:59.919
Literally, well it wasn't in the middle of a newhere

91
00:04:00.120 --> 00:04:01.680
was at the Ohio State.

92
00:04:02.120 --> 00:04:05.560
In Ohio State, like pretty funny a camp like not

93
00:04:05.759 --> 00:04:08.919
the main campus, but remote campus. And I plugged in

94
00:04:08.919 --> 00:04:10.879
the car and it said it was going to take

95
00:04:10.960 --> 00:04:13.759
nine hours to charge. So I was like, oh, that's

96
00:04:13.800 --> 00:04:15.719
not going to work, and then we found another word. Anyway,

97
00:04:15.759 --> 00:04:18.319
it was a lot of learning along.

98
00:04:18.319 --> 00:04:19.839
We went to a lot of gas stations. We did

99
00:04:19.839 --> 00:04:22.600
go to a lot of a lot of gas stations. Yes, yeah,

100
00:04:22.600 --> 00:04:26.439
and the wah wah was was great too, was fabulous.

101
00:04:26.639 --> 00:04:28.439
They have a lot of gas stations in Ohio that

102
00:04:28.480 --> 00:04:29.839
we don't have here. Yeah.

103
00:04:29.879 --> 00:04:32.759
In food places, we did not stop for Skyline chili.

104
00:04:32.959 --> 00:04:35.639
And I forgot how many waffle houses are on the

105
00:04:35.639 --> 00:04:38.720
way to Ohio, and we didn't go to a waffle house. No,

106
00:04:38.879 --> 00:04:40.560
we didn't get the Cane's chicken.

107
00:04:40.680 --> 00:04:43.240
We only had twenty four hours, so I'll have to

108
00:04:43.240 --> 00:04:46.000
to make it. It was fun. Are you ready for

109
00:04:46.040 --> 00:04:46.439
a snack?

110
00:04:46.839 --> 00:04:49.360
Not really, I have a little bit of a stomach

111
00:04:49.399 --> 00:04:51.360
agche from the weekend, but I will do.

112
00:04:51.800 --> 00:04:53.360
I have to eat both of these then I will.

113
00:04:53.480 --> 00:04:56.639
But I made some You already know this because you helped.

114
00:04:56.720 --> 00:05:00.360
But I made another recipe out of the Texas book

115
00:05:00.399 --> 00:05:03.600
that our friend Carla sent us, and I made prelins.

116
00:05:04.120 --> 00:05:06.519
Almost bought some prelins at BUCkies. That's kind of funny.

117
00:05:06.600 --> 00:05:09.399
Yeah, and I think they look good. You you added

118
00:05:09.399 --> 00:05:11.360
some chocolate to the top of them is your.

119
00:05:11.240 --> 00:05:13.920
Own little chocolate, and I add a little sprinkling of

120
00:05:14.680 --> 00:05:15.120
liked salt.

121
00:05:15.199 --> 00:05:17.120
Well, they look good. I am going to give one

122
00:05:17.160 --> 00:05:24.920
a try. Would you like to travel? All right? Well,

123
00:05:24.959 --> 00:05:26.279
what did you think about the preleine?

124
00:05:26.759 --> 00:05:27.600
That was really good?

125
00:05:27.759 --> 00:05:30.120
It was very good, sweet, very sweet sweet.

126
00:05:30.160 --> 00:05:31.600
But it tastes just like a preleine.

127
00:05:31.639 --> 00:05:32.959
Shit, Well that's good.

128
00:05:33.000 --> 00:05:36.240
Then out of ten well done is always sorry, but

129
00:05:36.279 --> 00:05:38.319
I'm glad I added chocolate. I think the chocolate and.

130
00:05:38.439 --> 00:05:40.319
The chocolate is a nice touch. I was going to

131
00:05:40.360 --> 00:05:42.079
say I would post the recipe, but I don't know

132
00:05:42.120 --> 00:05:44.360
if I can find the recipe online because it's in

133
00:05:44.560 --> 00:05:46.560
a physical cookbook that we have, so.

134
00:05:46.560 --> 00:05:49.079
I think Pleine recipes are probably probably pretty standard.

135
00:05:49.160 --> 00:05:51.439
Yeah, well, how about we get back to the story

136
00:05:51.519 --> 00:05:55.480
of Wendy Davidson and Michael Severance Before we start. A

137
00:05:55.519 --> 00:05:59.720
content warning. This episode does include discussion of animals and

138
00:05:59.759 --> 00:06:03.240
youth in Asia. While not explicit, some listeners may find

139
00:06:03.240 --> 00:06:05.519
it disturbing, so please listen with care.

140
00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:09.240
Last time, we introduced you to Michael Severn's, a young

141
00:06:09.279 --> 00:06:12.800
Air Force staff sergeant from Lee Man who had survived

142
00:06:13.079 --> 00:06:16.920
five combat deployments overseas, only to find himself in a

143
00:06:16.959 --> 00:06:21.600
troubled marriage to a West Texas veterinarian named Wendy Davidson.

144
00:06:21.839 --> 00:06:24.519
He had barely known each other when Wendy got pregnant,

145
00:06:24.639 --> 00:06:26.920
but Mike decided to do what he considered to be

146
00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:30.480
the right thing. He moved to San Angelo, Texas, helped

147
00:06:30.560 --> 00:06:34.839
raise Wendy sun Tristan alongside their newborn, Shane, and he

148
00:06:34.959 --> 00:06:37.279
was counting down the days to a family trip back

149
00:06:37.279 --> 00:06:40.079
home to Maine, but he never made it. On the

150
00:06:40.079 --> 00:06:42.560
morning they were supposed to fly out, Wendy called Mike's

151
00:06:42.600 --> 00:06:45.000
family to say he hadn't come home the night before.

152
00:06:45.319 --> 00:06:47.720
His truck, his wallet, and his cell phone were all

153
00:06:47.759 --> 00:06:51.079
still there. Over the weeks that followed, investigators chased down

154
00:06:51.160 --> 00:06:54.079
red herrings while the evidence kept pointing in one direction,

155
00:06:54.560 --> 00:06:57.759
and then at a cemetery in Grape Creek, Wendy admitted

156
00:06:57.800 --> 00:06:59.839
to her family, which she had been hiding for nearly

157
00:06:59.839 --> 00:07:03.199
seven weeks, she had found Mike dead and moved his

158
00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:06.800
body to a stock pond on a nearby ranch. Divers

159
00:07:06.800 --> 00:07:09.959
recovered Mike's body on March sixth, two thousand and five.

160
00:07:10.240 --> 00:07:13.519
He'd been weighted down with a cinderblock, a break drum,

161
00:07:13.759 --> 00:07:16.519
a tire rim, and a boat anchor, and there were

162
00:07:16.560 --> 00:07:20.160
stab wounds across his body. That same night, three men

163
00:07:20.279 --> 00:07:23.240
in Air Force dress uniforms showed up at Leslie and

164
00:07:23.319 --> 00:07:26.319
Brenda's door in Maine and broke the news that Mike

165
00:07:26.600 --> 00:07:31.680
was dead. Now, Leslie is Mike's dad, and Brenda is

166
00:07:31.680 --> 00:07:34.519
his mom, stepmom, stepmom. That's right. His mom had died

167
00:07:34.519 --> 00:07:35.560
when he was a child.

168
00:07:35.319 --> 00:07:37.519
He was fourteen. Right. Is there anything else that we

169
00:07:37.560 --> 00:07:39.199
covered in part one that we should mention?

170
00:07:39.439 --> 00:07:41.759
Well, I think we have to talk about Judy, Judy

171
00:07:41.839 --> 00:07:45.120
and what was her husband's name, uh, Lloyd. So Judy

172
00:07:45.480 --> 00:07:48.639
is Wendy's mom and Lloyd is her dad. And Judy

173
00:07:48.879 --> 00:07:50.160
despises Mike.

174
00:07:50.399 --> 00:07:52.839
She hated him from the moment she met him, and

175
00:07:52.879 --> 00:07:55.759
it only got worse over time. And she was very

176
00:07:55.879 --> 00:07:57.920
open and blunt about her hatred of Mike.

177
00:07:58.120 --> 00:08:00.720
Yeah, and like you said, she never even really tried

178
00:08:00.720 --> 00:08:02.639
to get to know him. She just hated him from

179
00:08:02.680 --> 00:08:05.319
the get go. She had a history of disliking anyone

180
00:08:05.319 --> 00:08:06.639
that Wendy had ever dated.

181
00:08:06.759 --> 00:08:11.399
Right, And when Wendy admitted to hiding Mike's body, her

182
00:08:11.560 --> 00:08:14.120
justification for it in her mind at least for what

183
00:08:14.199 --> 00:08:16.839
she said was that she assumed someone else in her

184
00:08:16.839 --> 00:08:19.480
family had killed him and she wanted to cover up

185
00:08:19.519 --> 00:08:22.240
to protect them. So she was basically saying she thought

186
00:08:22.480 --> 00:08:25.680
her mom killed Mike and she was hiding the body

187
00:08:25.720 --> 00:08:26.759
to protect her.

188
00:08:27.120 --> 00:08:30.000
And Judy had been interviewed by the police, and even

189
00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:34.240
in the police interview, she was pretty forthcoming with her

190
00:08:34.279 --> 00:08:36.960
dislike for Mike. And I'm wondering I didn't say it

191
00:08:37.080 --> 00:08:39.399
on the last episode, but do you think the police

192
00:08:39.399 --> 00:08:43.440
were instantly like, hmm, she sounds guilty, or she sounds

193
00:08:43.480 --> 00:08:45.120
like she had plenty of motive.

194
00:08:45.279 --> 00:08:47.440
I'm sure it would have raised some eyebrows, just you know,

195
00:08:47.480 --> 00:08:49.960
talking to someone who's missing and talking to them in

196
00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:54.080
the way that she did. Just yeah, clearly despised him.

197
00:08:54.120 --> 00:08:57.480
On Tuesday morning, March eighth, detectives arrived at the clinic

198
00:08:57.519 --> 00:09:00.440
with a search warrant. Judy was there. They told her

199
00:09:00.519 --> 00:09:03.360
she needed to vacate, so she collected some things for

200
00:09:03.399 --> 00:09:07.120
the boys, clothing and toys. Officers followed her through the

201
00:09:07.120 --> 00:09:08.480
building as she gathered them.

202
00:09:08.879 --> 00:09:10.840
They lived at the clinic, right, that's right.

203
00:09:10.840 --> 00:09:13.600
There was a small apartment that was part of the clinic,

204
00:09:13.639 --> 00:09:17.399
the veterinary clinic that Wendy had started. The search was thorough.

205
00:09:17.639 --> 00:09:20.919
They sprayed luminol throughout the space looking for any trace

206
00:09:20.960 --> 00:09:24.240
of blood, but they found none. But they did notice something.

207
00:09:24.440 --> 00:09:27.200
A pistol and a boning knife that had been present

208
00:09:27.279 --> 00:09:30.399
during a previous visit to the clinic were gone. When

209
00:09:30.440 --> 00:09:33.720
investigators asked Lloyd about it, he said he thought Wendy's

210
00:09:33.720 --> 00:09:37.320
brother Marshall might have them. The room went quiet. Marshall

211
00:09:37.399 --> 00:09:40.320
Davidson was a law enforcement officer. He was a game

212
00:09:40.360 --> 00:09:42.879
warden for the state of Texas. If he had taken

213
00:09:42.919 --> 00:09:45.360
those items and was holding them back from an active

214
00:09:45.360 --> 00:09:49.120
homicide investigation, that wasn't just a problem, it was a

215
00:09:49.159 --> 00:09:53.879
serious crime. On March seventeenth, the Medical Examiner's office completed

216
00:09:53.960 --> 00:09:57.399
its examination of Mike's remains. They were still waiting for

217
00:09:57.440 --> 00:10:01.559
the toxicology results before making their final determination, but they

218
00:10:01.639 --> 00:10:05.240
released the body to the Severance family. Leslie wanted to

219
00:10:05.240 --> 00:10:07.919
bring his son home to Maine to be buried, but

220
00:10:08.039 --> 00:10:11.200
because Wendy was still legally Mike's wife, she had to

221
00:10:11.240 --> 00:10:14.919
sign off. Wendy called her brother Marshall from jail and

222
00:10:14.960 --> 00:10:17.879
talked about the other ideas that she had. So we're

223
00:10:17.879 --> 00:10:19.399
going to do a little bit of true crime theater.

224
00:10:19.519 --> 00:10:22.200
Do you mind playing the part of Wendy? Sure, and

225
00:10:22.279 --> 00:10:24.279
I will play the part of her brother, Marshall.

226
00:10:24.759 --> 00:10:27.759
I know this sounds silly, maybe, but I just want

227
00:10:27.799 --> 00:10:30.279
Mike to be buried here because he's my husband and

228
00:10:30.320 --> 00:10:31.000
the kid's.

229
00:10:30.799 --> 00:10:33.240
Daddy, and Wendy, you need to let that go. The

230
00:10:33.320 --> 00:10:36.039
last two times you've called, all you've talked about is him.

231
00:10:36.279 --> 00:10:38.480
You need to worry about you now, Okay.

232
00:10:38.759 --> 00:10:40.759
But I don't want them to ship him off to Maine.

233
00:10:40.960 --> 00:10:42.840
Well that's where he was born and raised.

234
00:10:42.919 --> 00:10:45.720
And i'm his wife. What I'm his wife, Marshall.

235
00:10:45.960 --> 00:10:47.879
Yeah, but he's got family up there too.

236
00:10:48.519 --> 00:10:50.519
I don't know what they want to do, but I

237
00:10:50.559 --> 00:10:51.120
don't know.

238
00:10:51.039 --> 00:10:53.279
What's going to happen yet. Like I said, you need

239
00:10:53.320 --> 00:10:55.159
to talk to your lawyer, but you need to think

240
00:10:55.159 --> 00:10:58.480
about his dad. Probably do what his dad wants to do.

241
00:10:58.799 --> 00:10:59.840
It doesn't matter what I want.

242
00:11:00.519 --> 00:11:02.879
Well, sure it matters, but y'all have been married for

243
00:11:02.919 --> 00:11:05.399
a few months. He'd been his dad's forever.

244
00:11:05.879 --> 00:11:07.360
And what about Shane and Tristan?

245
00:11:07.759 --> 00:11:08.600
What about them?

246
00:11:08.679 --> 00:11:09.679
That was their daddy.

247
00:11:09.960 --> 00:11:11.799
They're not going to be able to see him. Wendy,

248
00:11:11.960 --> 00:11:14.399
I don't understand what you're saying there. You know that

249
00:11:14.559 --> 00:11:15.480
as well as I do.

250
00:11:15.720 --> 00:11:17.559
Well, would you want Papa shipped off.

251
00:11:17.320 --> 00:11:20.879
Somewhere Papa was born and raised here. You need to think, Wendy.

252
00:11:21.080 --> 00:11:23.159
I don't know what to tell you. You're losing it.

253
00:11:23.320 --> 00:11:25.960
You need to pull yourself together. Shane doesn't have a

254
00:11:25.960 --> 00:11:26.799
clue who he is.

255
00:11:27.519 --> 00:11:27.840
I know.

256
00:11:28.840 --> 00:11:32.159
Wendy Davidson was sitting in jail, charged in connection with

257
00:11:32.200 --> 00:11:34.320
the death of her husband, a man who had been

258
00:11:34.360 --> 00:11:36.799
found at the bottom of a pond, weighed down with

259
00:11:36.879 --> 00:11:40.519
scrap metal, stabbed dozens of times, and what she wanted

260
00:11:40.559 --> 00:11:43.200
to talk about call after call, was where he would

261
00:11:43.200 --> 00:11:46.279
be buried. In the end, Leslie did bring Mike home

262
00:11:46.360 --> 00:11:48.879
to Maine. He was buried there among the people who

263
00:11:48.879 --> 00:11:51.120
had known him his whole life, in the state that

264
00:11:51.200 --> 00:11:54.039
he had been so eager to show his wife and kids.

265
00:11:54.559 --> 00:11:57.639
On March eleventh, a memorial service was held for Mike

266
00:11:57.720 --> 00:12:00.360
at DAAs Air Force Base. The man, one who had

267
00:12:00.399 --> 00:12:04.559
volunteered for dangerous missions, logged hundreds of combat hours, and

268
00:12:04.639 --> 00:12:07.399
been described by everyone who knew him as someone who

269
00:12:07.440 --> 00:12:10.679
always put others first, was honored by the institution that

270
00:12:10.759 --> 00:12:14.480
he had served back in San Angelo. The legal maneuvering

271
00:12:14.559 --> 00:12:18.480
for custody of Shane had already begun. From jail, Wendy

272
00:12:18.519 --> 00:12:21.840
had her attorney draw up a power of attorney for childcare,

273
00:12:22.200 --> 00:12:25.039
naming Marshall as her agent to look after the children.

274
00:12:25.360 --> 00:12:28.720
But Marshall had a different suggestion Judy and Lloyd should

275
00:12:28.720 --> 00:12:31.799
seek formal custody. The thinking, as he laid it out,

276
00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:34.879
was strategic. It would be harder for Leslie to gain

277
00:12:34.960 --> 00:12:38.919
custody if Shane was already placed with the Davidsons. Marshall

278
00:12:39.000 --> 00:12:42.399
was just an uncle. Lloyd and Judy were Shane's grandparents,

279
00:12:42.679 --> 00:12:46.399
just like Leslie. On March fourteenth, Lloyd and Judy filed

280
00:12:46.399 --> 00:12:50.000
a petition for custody of their grandson, Shane Severance. Two

281
00:12:50.120 --> 00:12:53.320
days later, Leslie filed his own. In a phone call

282
00:12:53.360 --> 00:12:55.960
with her mother from jail. Around this time, Wendy was

283
00:12:55.960 --> 00:13:00.159
focused on the possibility of losing her veterinary licenset. I

284
00:13:00.200 --> 00:13:02.679
just threw seven years of my life away going to school.

285
00:13:03.279 --> 00:13:06.879
Judy's response was pointed, well, Wendy, did you not think

286
00:13:06.919 --> 00:13:10.200
about that at all? Wendy snapped back, no, Mama, If

287
00:13:10.240 --> 00:13:13.000
I was thinking logically, I wouldn't be in this freaking boat.

288
00:13:13.360 --> 00:13:15.799
It was, in its own way, the most honest thing

289
00:13:15.879 --> 00:13:19.039
that she had said. In weeks in Maine, Mike's family

290
00:13:19.159 --> 00:13:21.960
was doing what families do. They were finding ways to

291
00:13:21.960 --> 00:13:24.879
hold each other up. They planned his funeral, and they

292
00:13:24.919 --> 00:13:28.279
also organized a fundraiser to help Leslie with the mounting

293
00:13:28.360 --> 00:13:31.240
costs of the custody fight for Shane. They held the

294
00:13:31.279 --> 00:13:35.360
event at the Knights of Columbus Hall, a DJ dancing music.

295
00:13:35.720 --> 00:13:38.639
It was a deliberate choice. Mike had loved to dance.

296
00:13:39.120 --> 00:13:41.759
He had taught himself the Texas two step and dragged

297
00:13:41.759 --> 00:13:44.840
friends onto dance floors. More than two hundred and fifty

298
00:13:44.879 --> 00:13:48.120
people bought tickets to the fundraiser. They came to remember

299
00:13:48.200 --> 00:13:51.440
him and to make sure his son had a fighting chance.

300
00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:53.879
Like so many of these stories we tell, it's just

301
00:13:53.960 --> 00:13:58.720
the custody battle is so sad and heartbreaking and frustrating.

302
00:13:58.879 --> 00:14:00.919
Yeah, children really need their whole family.

303
00:14:01.240 --> 00:14:01.919
Yeah.

304
00:14:01.960 --> 00:14:05.159
While the Severan's family was rallying around each other in Maine,

305
00:14:05.360 --> 00:14:08.440
Wendy was on the phone from jail and the calls

306
00:14:08.519 --> 00:14:10.000
were revealing, Well.

307
00:14:09.919 --> 00:14:11.840
I'd like to do another true crime theater with you.

308
00:14:11.879 --> 00:14:14.720
This time, I will play Lloyd Wendy's dad, and you

309
00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:16.000
again will play Wendy.

310
00:14:16.080 --> 00:14:18.000
Okay with me, very authentic.

311
00:14:18.279 --> 00:14:20.679
It was exus. It was really well done, all right,

312
00:14:20.720 --> 00:14:22.679
So Lloyd is going to start he's referring to the

313
00:14:22.679 --> 00:14:26.279
investigation here. They're still talking to people and still getting

314
00:14:26.279 --> 00:14:27.320
stuff together.

315
00:14:27.480 --> 00:14:29.799
And in the meantime, I'm the one that's in trouble

316
00:14:29.840 --> 00:14:31.360
and they don't even know what's going on.

317
00:14:31.720 --> 00:14:34.320
Well, yeah, you're in trouble because you're the one that

318
00:14:34.399 --> 00:14:35.039
did something.

319
00:14:35.360 --> 00:14:37.639
I'm ready to go to court. I'll tell everybody, the

320
00:14:37.679 --> 00:14:39.960
whole public of San Angelo, what I did. I'll do

321
00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:42.360
whatever I need to do. But I'm tired of sitting

322
00:14:42.399 --> 00:14:45.000
in here every day wondering what they think I might

323
00:14:45.039 --> 00:14:45.639
have done.

324
00:14:45.840 --> 00:14:48.080
Well, you pretty much know what they think you've done.

325
00:14:48.279 --> 00:14:50.840
They think you did something to Mike, and they know

326
00:14:51.000 --> 00:14:53.200
what you did at the tank. They're just trying to

327
00:14:53.240 --> 00:14:56.840
prove it. You know that, No, not really, Okay, what

328
00:14:56.919 --> 00:14:59.399
do you think that you ran a stop sign or something?

329
00:14:59.559 --> 00:15:01.600
You've got look at it from their perspective.

330
00:15:02.120 --> 00:15:04.279
If they think I'm such an evil, bad person, why

331
00:15:04.279 --> 00:15:06.600
don't they have me out there making a living taking

332
00:15:06.639 --> 00:15:10.279
care of my kids? I won't be eating up taxpayer dollars.

333
00:15:10.519 --> 00:15:12.799
Well, that's not how the system works. Why would they

334
00:15:12.879 --> 00:15:14.679
even have jails if it worked that way.

335
00:15:15.000 --> 00:15:16.440
Well, I don't know, but there are a lot of

336
00:15:16.480 --> 00:15:17.759
people on house arrest.

337
00:15:18.039 --> 00:15:21.440
Yeah, but it's usually for little dinky things, not serious stuff.

338
00:15:21.720 --> 00:15:24.159
Most of the reason I'm in here is because Marshall

339
00:15:24.159 --> 00:15:26.120
called the police. He is the one that did that.

340
00:15:26.600 --> 00:15:28.399
No, you're the one that did.

341
00:15:28.200 --> 00:15:30.679
It, all right, So part of this is my fault.

342
00:15:30.759 --> 00:15:32.600
But I'm ready to go to court and I'll take

343
00:15:32.639 --> 00:15:35.159
whatever punishment they deal out for what I did. But

344
00:15:35.240 --> 00:15:36.879
this is not fair, Daddy.

345
00:15:37.279 --> 00:15:39.320
Life is not fair. Do you think any of this

346
00:15:39.399 --> 00:15:41.840
is fair to the rest of us? So I just

347
00:15:41.879 --> 00:15:45.080
found this conversation really interesting and revealing. The book that

348
00:15:45.120 --> 00:15:48.080
I read had a lot of transcripts of Wendy's phone

349
00:15:48.080 --> 00:15:50.639
calls from prison, and I didn't include too many of them.

350
00:15:50.720 --> 00:15:53.440
But she just did not seem to be able to

351
00:15:53.440 --> 00:15:57.279
wrap her head around the reality that she did something serious,

352
00:15:57.519 --> 00:16:00.120
even if, as she's claiming, all she did.

353
00:16:00.200 --> 00:16:02.039
Was height his body body in the stock part.

354
00:16:02.080 --> 00:16:04.679
That's pretty serious too, But she just seems to think

355
00:16:04.720 --> 00:16:07.480
like this is just an inconvenience and it's all unfair

356
00:16:07.480 --> 00:16:07.799
to her.

357
00:16:08.200 --> 00:16:11.759
Wendy truly seemed illusional about how much trouble she was in.

358
00:16:11.759 --> 00:16:15.080
In a separate call with Marshall around March eighteenth, Wendy

359
00:16:15.120 --> 00:16:18.720
speculated that she would probably get probation. She talked about

360
00:16:18.799 --> 00:16:22.000
keeping the clinic running, maybe as the business manager, if

361
00:16:22.039 --> 00:16:25.840
her license was temporarily suspended, as if this were a

362
00:16:25.919 --> 00:16:30.679
bureaucratic inconvenience rather than a homicide investigation. She also wrote

363
00:16:30.679 --> 00:16:33.200
a letter to her parents. In it, she said she

364
00:16:33.279 --> 00:16:35.679
knew her father kept telling her that she was in

365
00:16:35.759 --> 00:16:39.159
serious trouble, that this wasn't like running a stop sign,

366
00:16:39.440 --> 00:16:41.919
but she said she honestly didn't feel like what she

367
00:16:42.000 --> 00:16:45.039
had done was anything horrible. She wrote that she still

368
00:16:45.039 --> 00:16:47.840
loved Mike and that if he could speak, she believed

369
00:16:47.879 --> 00:16:50.840
he would understand he wouldn't be mad at her. On

370
00:16:50.919 --> 00:16:54.720
April third, Wendy's grandmother, Jesse May, lost her battle with cancer.

371
00:16:55.000 --> 00:16:57.240
Her lawyers had been trying to get approval for a

372
00:16:57.360 --> 00:17:00.200
visit before the end, but they didn't make it in time.

373
00:17:00.639 --> 00:17:04.119
On April eighth, the courts reduced Wendy's bail to fifty

374
00:17:04.200 --> 00:17:07.920
thousand dollars five hundred thousand dollars was very steep when

375
00:17:07.920 --> 00:17:10.920
the only charge at this point was tampering with evidence,

376
00:17:11.200 --> 00:17:15.480
and she was released. The toxicology report came back that

377
00:17:15.559 --> 00:17:19.759
same day. The lab had found phenobarbital and high levels

378
00:17:19.759 --> 00:17:24.759
of pentobarbital and Mike's gastric contents and liver tissue. Investigators

379
00:17:24.799 --> 00:17:27.759
pulled the crime scene photographs from their earlier searches of

380
00:17:27.759 --> 00:17:31.680
the clinic, and there it was bottles of phenobarbital tablets

381
00:17:31.880 --> 00:17:36.960
bottles of euthanasia D special, a common veterinary euthanasia solution

382
00:17:37.240 --> 00:17:41.799
whose active ingredient is pentobarbitol. Both drugs had been sitting

383
00:17:41.839 --> 00:17:45.880
in plain sight at Advanced Animal Care. Investigators went back

384
00:17:45.880 --> 00:17:49.079
to the records. They had already seized logs documenting the

385
00:17:49.119 --> 00:17:54.880
administration of controlled substances, including phenobarbital and euthanasia D to

386
00:17:55.039 --> 00:17:58.079
twenty one animals at the clinic. This type of careful

387
00:17:58.119 --> 00:18:02.440
paperwork was required for dealing with controlled substances. I remember

388
00:18:02.440 --> 00:18:07.960
from episode one that Wendy really did not like euthanizing animals.

389
00:18:09.119 --> 00:18:12.319
As they carefully looked through the records, they found a discrepancy.

390
00:18:12.720 --> 00:18:16.599
They controlled substance log indicated that a Chihawah named Wheezy

391
00:18:16.759 --> 00:18:20.279
had been given phenobarbital, but in a garbage bind they

392
00:18:20.279 --> 00:18:23.279
found a loose sheet of paper with Wheezy written at

393
00:18:23.359 --> 00:18:26.359
in blue ink, a date of January first, two thousand

394
00:18:26.400 --> 00:18:30.680
and five, and two notations, one saying no prescription medications

395
00:18:30.720 --> 00:18:34.319
at this time and another about epilepsy. The first notation

396
00:18:34.480 --> 00:18:36.920
had been crossed out and replaced with a prescription for

397
00:18:37.039 --> 00:18:41.720
phenobarbital and valium. Investigators tracked down Wheezy's owner, a woman

398
00:18:41.799 --> 00:18:44.880
named Samantha Norfleet. She told them that her four and

399
00:18:44.880 --> 00:18:47.400
a half pound dog had suffered a seizure on New

400
00:18:47.480 --> 00:18:51.079
Year's Day. Wendy examined Wheezy, drew blood, and gave the

401
00:18:51.119 --> 00:18:55.160
dog a shot of valium. She told Samantha phenobarbital is

402
00:18:55.279 --> 00:18:58.400
usually used to treat seizures, but she didn't recommend it

403
00:18:58.440 --> 00:19:01.200
in this case. Samantha wrote a check for one hundred

404
00:19:01.200 --> 00:19:04.400
and ninety six dollars and took Wheezy home. But Wheezy

405
00:19:04.480 --> 00:19:08.519
was never given phenobarbital, but someone had altered her records

406
00:19:08.559 --> 00:19:12.480
to suggest that she was. On April fifteenth, Wendy was

407
00:19:12.599 --> 00:19:16.119
arrested again, this time on a second tampering with evidence

408
00:19:16.200 --> 00:19:20.400
charge for doctoring the controlled substance log and falsifying Wheezy's

409
00:19:20.400 --> 00:19:23.759
medical records. Her bond was set at one hundred thousand

410
00:19:23.799 --> 00:19:26.839
dollars and a property bond was posted and she was

411
00:19:26.920 --> 00:19:30.319
released once again. But the more investigators dug into the

412
00:19:30.400 --> 00:19:34.680
drug records, that clearer the picture became. The standard dosage

413
00:19:34.680 --> 00:19:37.680
of butthanasia D is one milli leader for every ten

414
00:19:37.720 --> 00:19:40.960
pounds of body weight. When investigators added up the excess

415
00:19:41.000 --> 00:19:44.720
amounts recorded in Wendy's logs between October two thousand four

416
00:19:44.799 --> 00:19:47.680
and February two thousand and five, they came to ten

417
00:19:47.759 --> 00:19:51.519
point eight six millileterers, enough to euthanize a one hundred

418
00:19:51.559 --> 00:19:55.119
eight pound dog. Then there was a dog named Patience

419
00:19:55.440 --> 00:19:59.720
owned by a woman named Dana Schwartz. According to Wendy's technician,

420
00:19:59.799 --> 00:20:03.440
j Patients had died while being repositioned for an X ray,

421
00:20:03.759 --> 00:20:06.440
but Wendy had called Dana and told the owner that

422
00:20:06.480 --> 00:20:09.200
the dog needed to be euthanized and then build her

423
00:20:09.240 --> 00:20:12.759
for it. The log showed six milliliters of euthanasia D

424
00:20:12.920 --> 00:20:17.640
administered to patients added all together, and the excess bututhanasia

425
00:20:17.720 --> 00:20:21.240
D unaccounted for and the clinic's records was enough to

426
00:20:21.359 --> 00:20:24.440
euthanize a one hundred and sixty eight pound man, and

427
00:20:24.559 --> 00:20:28.279
Mike Severance weighed about one hundred and sixty pounds. To

428
00:20:28.359 --> 00:20:32.720
be fair, veterinarians sometimes administer slightly more than the minimum

429
00:20:32.759 --> 00:20:36.519
require dose, particularly when a pet owner is present, and

430
00:20:36.640 --> 00:20:39.799
investigators didn't have a clear baseline for what Wendy's normal

431
00:20:39.839 --> 00:20:43.200
practice looked like. They also discovered that she had made

432
00:20:43.319 --> 00:20:46.680
multiple trips to Mexico to purchase pharmaceuticals and had no

433
00:20:46.720 --> 00:20:49.599
way of knowing exactly what she had brought back across

434
00:20:49.640 --> 00:20:53.200
the border. But the toxicology report did make clear was this.

435
00:20:53.519 --> 00:20:57.079
Mike's death was caused by the combined effect of phenobarbital

436
00:20:57.319 --> 00:21:00.480
and pentobarbital, the same drugs that had been been sitting

437
00:21:00.559 --> 00:21:03.599
in bottles at Advanced Animal Care and the same drugs

438
00:21:03.640 --> 00:21:06.480
Wendy Davidson used every day in her work.

439
00:21:07.039 --> 00:21:10.880
Basically, the bottom line is that Mike was euthanized. Essentially,

440
00:21:11.119 --> 00:21:15.119
Oh poor Mike. I know, it's just so so horrific.

441
00:21:15.440 --> 00:21:18.039
So are you saying that Judy is off the hook?

442
00:21:18.799 --> 00:21:21.079
I don't know. We'll talk more about that, for sure.

443
00:21:21.519 --> 00:21:23.079
We'll be back after a break.

444
00:21:30.599 --> 00:21:34.279
While the forensic picture was coming together. Investigators were also

445
00:21:34.319 --> 00:21:36.839
building a portrait of Wendy through the people who had

446
00:21:36.880 --> 00:21:40.759
worked with her. Former colleagues from the Lubbock clinic were interviewed.

447
00:21:41.039 --> 00:21:44.720
The owner said she hadn't followed proper policies and procedures.

448
00:21:44.839 --> 00:21:47.880
If she hadn't quit, he would have fired her. Others

449
00:21:47.920 --> 00:21:51.839
described her as difficult and disagreeable. One recalled that she

450
00:21:52.000 --> 00:21:55.319
spoke way too openly about her sex life and habitually

451
00:21:55.359 --> 00:21:59.079
blamed others for her problems and mistakes. And then there

452
00:21:59.119 --> 00:22:02.160
was something else that was even more disturbing. She had

453
00:22:02.200 --> 00:22:05.519
reportedly talked out loud about ways to keep Mike from

454
00:22:05.559 --> 00:22:08.599
getting custody of the baby if they divorced. One of

455
00:22:08.599 --> 00:22:11.799
the ideas she floated punching the baby in the face

456
00:22:11.839 --> 00:22:14.880
and telling police that Mike had done it. On May

457
00:22:14.920 --> 00:22:18.000
twenty fourth, two thousand and five, a grand jury convened

458
00:22:18.079 --> 00:22:21.839
to consider the case. They confirmed both tampering with evidence

459
00:22:21.920 --> 00:22:26.480
charges and added a homicide indictment. Wendy surrendered herself at

460
00:22:26.519 --> 00:22:29.559
the tom Green County Sheriff's office the following day and

461
00:22:29.880 --> 00:22:34.160
was released on bond that same afternoon. Leslie severance following

462
00:22:34.200 --> 00:22:37.759
developments from Maine was struggling to understand how it was

463
00:22:37.839 --> 00:22:41.000
possible that the woman charged with killing his son was

464
00:22:41.039 --> 00:22:44.400
allowed to live in the same house as Shane. Leslie said,

465
00:22:44.680 --> 00:22:47.119
I cannot, for the life of me understand how he

466
00:22:47.160 --> 00:22:49.279
can be allowed to stay in the same house as her.

467
00:22:49.599 --> 00:22:52.680
Nothing is going to bring Michael back. So there's Shane.

468
00:22:53.000 --> 00:22:55.000
I don't believe he should be where he's at.

469
00:22:55.319 --> 00:22:57.799
I'm sorry. I was so shocked when you said it

470
00:22:57.880 --> 00:23:01.000
that I didn't respond in real time. But she wanted

471
00:23:01.000 --> 00:23:02.799
to punch her baby in the face.

472
00:23:02.880 --> 00:23:06.039
I know, it's just and she told somebody that too,

473
00:23:06.160 --> 00:23:07.880
like yeah, and she's.

474
00:23:07.680 --> 00:23:09.200
Caring for people's animals.

475
00:23:09.319 --> 00:23:09.680
I mean.

476
00:23:11.000 --> 00:23:14.759
Wendy, for her part, took a private polygraph examination. Her

477
00:23:14.799 --> 00:23:17.599
attorney told the media that she had passed. That she

478
00:23:17.720 --> 00:23:20.599
had been asked directly whether she killed her husband and

479
00:23:20.640 --> 00:23:23.400
whether she knew who did, and that she had truthfully

480
00:23:23.440 --> 00:23:26.279
answered no to both. We hear a lot about private

481
00:23:26.400 --> 00:23:30.119
polygraph examinations that I always think it's just a pr

482
00:23:30.319 --> 00:23:34.680
ploy that if you are accused of committing a crime

483
00:23:34.720 --> 00:23:38.279
and your lawyer says we're going to take a private examination,

484
00:23:38.440 --> 00:23:41.480
that there's really nothing to that other than just.

485
00:23:41.519 --> 00:23:44.119
Pr We were talking about this when we were driving

486
00:23:44.119 --> 00:23:46.680
to Ohio, about how some day I would love to,

487
00:23:47.240 --> 00:23:49.400
you know, have you take a polygraph test, because what

488
00:23:49.440 --> 00:23:51.319
we say to like you think you could pass it.

489
00:23:51.920 --> 00:23:54.680
But I don't even have anything incriminating to ask you.

490
00:23:54.960 --> 00:23:57.200
I don't think, not that I know of. I know

491
00:23:57.559 --> 00:24:00.039
you had mentioned in the first episode that when he

492
00:24:00.200 --> 00:24:03.119
had taken the polygraph exam and that she PA will

493
00:24:03.119 --> 00:24:06.240
know her. But you said that her lawyer told the

494
00:24:06.359 --> 00:24:08.480
media to the media that she had passed it.

495
00:24:08.640 --> 00:24:12.359
Right, Wendy still wasn't talking to investigators and had not

496
00:24:12.519 --> 00:24:15.960
admitted anything beyond moving the body. But based on the

497
00:24:15.960 --> 00:24:19.880
physical evidence, the toxicology results, and the timeline, here is

498
00:24:19.920 --> 00:24:24.079
what investigators believed happened to Mike Severance. After they got

499
00:24:24.119 --> 00:24:26.400
home from Graham's Central station. There was a bar that

500
00:24:26.440 --> 00:24:30.119
they went out to on Friday evening, January fourteenth. Wendy

501
00:24:30.200 --> 00:24:33.599
probably poured Mike a beer into it. She dropped five

502
00:24:33.799 --> 00:24:38.799
veterinary phenobarbital tablets. The drug dissolves easily, and the bitterness

503
00:24:38.799 --> 00:24:41.680
of the beer would have masked any taste. It wasn't

504
00:24:41.680 --> 00:24:44.000
a lethal dose, but it was enough to guarantee a

505
00:24:44.079 --> 00:24:47.920
deep heavy sleep lasting eight to twelve hours. Mike drank it,

506
00:24:48.119 --> 00:24:51.319
undressed and went to bed. When Wendy was confident that

507
00:24:51.359 --> 00:24:55.000
he was unconscious, she took a syringe loaded with butthanasia

508
00:24:55.079 --> 00:24:58.640
D and injected it into his chest. The solution contained

509
00:24:58.640 --> 00:25:03.599
a lethal concentration of pentobarbital diluted with phenytoin. It would

510
00:25:03.599 --> 00:25:06.000
have been only a matter of time before his breathing

511
00:25:06.079 --> 00:25:09.920
stopped and his heart followed. Investigators believed that she then

512
00:25:10.039 --> 00:25:12.440
backed Mike's pickup truck up to the rear door of

513
00:25:12.480 --> 00:25:15.640
the clinic, dragged his body out, and loaded him onto

514
00:25:15.680 --> 00:25:18.759
the bed. She pulled a tarp or some covering over him,

515
00:25:19.000 --> 00:25:22.359
then gathered what she needed from an outbuilding, a cinder block,

516
00:25:22.440 --> 00:25:25.400
a brake drum, a spool of baling wire, a reel

517
00:25:25.440 --> 00:25:28.480
of fishing line. She drove north on Route eighty seven

518
00:25:28.559 --> 00:25:31.880
toward Grape Creek and to the four sevens Ranch. The

519
00:25:31.920 --> 00:25:34.599
stock tank on the property had a wooden dock built

520
00:25:34.599 --> 00:25:37.000
out over the water at one end, with a rowboat

521
00:25:37.119 --> 00:25:39.759
tied to it. She pulled up to the dock, rolled

522
00:25:39.759 --> 00:25:42.400
Mike's body out of the truck, and dragged him across

523
00:25:42.440 --> 00:25:45.720
the ground and onto the platform. She looped baling wire

524
00:25:45.799 --> 00:25:48.359
around his neck and fastened the brake drum to the

525
00:25:48.359 --> 00:25:51.440
other end. She tied fishing line from the cinder block

526
00:25:51.519 --> 00:25:54.279
to his leg. Then she rolled him off the edge

527
00:25:54.279 --> 00:25:57.119
into the water, drove back to the clinic in his truck,

528
00:25:57.279 --> 00:26:00.160
and went to sleep before Judy arrived to open the

529
00:26:00.200 --> 00:26:03.880
clinic in the morning. The Sheriff's department later reenacted what

530
00:26:03.960 --> 00:26:07.079
they believed that she had done and concluded that while

531
00:26:07.119 --> 00:26:10.079
it would be difficult, she could have managed it alone,

532
00:26:10.599 --> 00:26:13.200
but that wasn't the end of it. After searching for

533
00:26:13.240 --> 00:26:16.480
information about how bodies decompose in water, I don't know

534
00:26:16.480 --> 00:26:18.480
if you recall from part one, but they had found

535
00:26:18.519 --> 00:26:21.519
a search that she did. On January twenty sixth, Wendy

536
00:26:21.599 --> 00:26:25.079
must have realized her plan was flawed. Mike's body would

537
00:26:25.119 --> 00:26:28.680
eventually resurface, so she went back to the pond and

538
00:26:28.799 --> 00:26:32.519
could likely see Mike's body floating not far below the surface.

539
00:26:32.920 --> 00:26:35.519
She got into the rowboat, rowed out to the body,

540
00:26:35.759 --> 00:26:38.200
and used an ore to push it toward the bank.

541
00:26:38.480 --> 00:26:40.400
Then she got out of the boat and went to

542
00:26:40.440 --> 00:26:44.319
work to allow gas to escape and slow the body's rise.

543
00:26:44.640 --> 00:26:47.319
She stabbed Mike through the chest and abdomen with a

544
00:26:47.359 --> 00:26:50.079
knife that she had brought. Then she rolled him over

545
00:26:50.319 --> 00:26:52.640
and did the same thing to his back. When she

546
00:26:52.839 --> 00:26:55.519
was finished, she had driven the knife into his body

547
00:26:55.680 --> 00:26:59.039
forty one times. Then she loaded the boat with everything

548
00:26:59.079 --> 00:27:02.160
heavy she could find, more cinder blocks, a boat anchor,

549
00:27:02.480 --> 00:27:05.480
additional scrap metal from the barn and the ranches dump,

550
00:27:05.799 --> 00:27:07.920
and rode back out to the center of the pond.

551
00:27:08.319 --> 00:27:11.160
She fastened the new weights to his ankles, wrists, and

552
00:27:11.359 --> 00:27:14.319
arms with rope and zip ties, and eased his body

553
00:27:14.359 --> 00:27:17.000
back under the water, and then she watched until he

554
00:27:17.079 --> 00:27:20.200
disappeared from view. Then she drove back to the clinic

555
00:27:20.279 --> 00:27:22.839
and went about her day. That at least is what

556
00:27:22.920 --> 00:27:26.720
the state of Texas believed happened. Wendy Davidson never said

557
00:27:26.759 --> 00:27:28.680
a word to confirm or deny it.

558
00:27:29.119 --> 00:27:31.359
Were the kids with her mother that night?

559
00:27:31.839 --> 00:27:35.559
The Friday night? They were with her mother? Yes, But

560
00:27:35.680 --> 00:27:39.799
that's an interesting note because what Wendy's story was that

561
00:27:40.200 --> 00:27:43.119
it was Saturday night that she came back and found

562
00:27:43.319 --> 00:27:46.359
his body, and the kids were with her on Saturday night.

563
00:27:46.640 --> 00:27:48.720
So if her version of events is true, if she

564
00:27:48.839 --> 00:27:51.359
just came home and found him dead and decided to

565
00:27:51.400 --> 00:27:53.880
hide the body. The kids were with her the whole time,

566
00:27:53.960 --> 00:27:55.799
which is not a great look. But if it was

567
00:27:55.839 --> 00:27:58.319
Friday night that she did that, then the kids were

568
00:27:58.359 --> 00:27:59.400
with her parents.

569
00:28:00.000 --> 00:28:02.000
You have any idea how big Wendy is.

570
00:28:02.720 --> 00:28:06.160
I'd never read like what her size or weight was.

571
00:28:06.279 --> 00:28:10.039
I did see an interview with her on I think

572
00:28:10.079 --> 00:28:13.000
it was twenty twenty, and she looked like an average

573
00:28:13.039 --> 00:28:13.680
sized woman.

574
00:28:13.839 --> 00:28:15.920
I would say, I'm average sized, and I don't think

575
00:28:15.960 --> 00:28:18.359
I could pick up a one hundred and sixty pound

576
00:28:18.519 --> 00:28:20.759
man and do everything that she did.

577
00:28:20.920 --> 00:28:22.799
I think it would be very difficult, Like I said,

578
00:28:22.799 --> 00:28:25.920
the Sheriff's department, they had a woman that worked there

579
00:28:25.960 --> 00:28:29.160
that was around Wendy's size, and they got a weight

580
00:28:29.400 --> 00:28:32.559
that was around Mike's weight and size, a dummy, and

581
00:28:32.599 --> 00:28:34.240
they went through and did the whole thing, and she

582
00:28:34.319 --> 00:28:36.480
was able to do it. Like I said, it wasn't easy,

583
00:28:36.720 --> 00:28:38.720
but it was feasible, is what they said.

584
00:28:38.880 --> 00:28:41.920
And if she's working with large animals, you know all

585
00:28:41.920 --> 00:28:42.960
the time, she's probably.

586
00:28:42.759 --> 00:28:45.880
Really pretty strong strong. The other part about this whole

587
00:28:45.920 --> 00:28:48.599
story that really sticks with me is the fact that

588
00:28:48.640 --> 00:28:52.000
she again we don't know for sure, but they believe

589
00:28:52.079 --> 00:28:54.480
that she went back you know, a week or two

590
00:28:54.519 --> 00:28:57.240
weeks after she dumped his body in the pond.

591
00:28:57.640 --> 00:28:59.799
Any evidence to support that, I think the.

592
00:28:59.759 --> 00:29:02.400
Main Well, the evidence is that the stab wounds that

593
00:29:02.480 --> 00:29:06.119
he had were done after his death, they weren't done

594
00:29:06.119 --> 00:29:09.200
before death. And the fact that she did the internet search.

595
00:29:09.279 --> 00:29:11.720
They know the day she did the Internet search, and

596
00:29:11.799 --> 00:29:14.759
so I think they're just following that to its conclusion

597
00:29:14.799 --> 00:29:18.119
that that search alarmed her, so she went back to

598
00:29:18.559 --> 00:29:20.839
basically try to keep the body from rising.

599
00:29:21.079 --> 00:29:24.079
Yeah, that is a very disturbing thought. And because they

600
00:29:24.079 --> 00:29:27.200
didn't find any blood, that was another thing that they thought, well,

601
00:29:27.359 --> 00:29:30.000
there's no blood, then she must not have stabbed him

602
00:29:30.119 --> 00:29:31.559
in the apartment, right, And.

603
00:29:31.440 --> 00:29:35.160
The cause of death was clearly the drugs that were administered.

604
00:29:35.640 --> 00:29:38.279
While the criminal case moved forward, so did the fight

605
00:29:38.319 --> 00:29:41.839
over Shane. On June sixteenth, Judy and Lloyd were deposed

606
00:29:41.880 --> 00:29:45.200
in the custody proceedings. Both made clear they would stand

607
00:29:45.240 --> 00:29:47.920
behind their daughter no matter what, and that they intended

608
00:29:47.920 --> 00:29:50.920
to fight Leslie and the rest of Mike's family every

609
00:29:51.000 --> 00:29:54.079
step of the way. At one point during his deposition,

610
00:29:54.319 --> 00:29:57.720
Lloyd speculated that Leslie could be a child molester or

611
00:29:57.759 --> 00:30:01.079
a criminal and argue that any visiting he was granted

612
00:30:01.240 --> 00:30:04.839
should be supervised. The suggestion was so vicious and so

613
00:30:04.920 --> 00:30:08.599
thoroughly without basis that it visibly shocked those in the room.

614
00:30:09.119 --> 00:30:10.240
What a low blow, I know.

615
00:30:10.839 --> 00:30:14.039
Leslie and Mike's brother Frank, arrived in West Texas the

616
00:30:14.079 --> 00:30:17.160
following day, on June eighteenth, They were allowed to see

617
00:30:17.200 --> 00:30:19.799
Shane for one hour att a McDonald's. That was what

618
00:30:19.920 --> 00:30:23.160
Judy and Lloyd would permit. Shane spent the entire visit

619
00:30:23.240 --> 00:30:26.160
sitting contentedly in Leslie's lap, as if he had always

620
00:30:26.200 --> 00:30:30.519
known him. On Sunday, Father's Day, Judy allowed one more hour,

621
00:30:30.799 --> 00:30:33.799
this time at a local park. Through both visits, she

622
00:30:33.960 --> 00:30:36.839
hovered nearby. How old is the baby.

623
00:30:36.799 --> 00:30:39.119
By this time? He's probably eight or nine months.

624
00:30:39.279 --> 00:30:43.480
The custody hearing came on June twenty fourth. Investigators took

625
00:30:43.519 --> 00:30:45.920
the stand and testified that it was possible Wendy had

626
00:30:45.920 --> 00:30:48.359
the children with her on the night she disposed of

627
00:30:48.400 --> 00:30:52.400
Mike's body. Leslie's attorney called it significantly bad judgment that

628
00:30:52.519 --> 00:30:54.680
she had been allowed to remain in the same home

629
00:30:54.680 --> 00:30:58.200
as Shane. The judge pushed back, reminding the courtroom that

630
00:30:58.279 --> 00:31:01.319
there was a presumption of innocence. When Judy was asked

631
00:31:01.400 --> 00:31:04.920
under oath whether she had hated Mike Severance, she answered,

632
00:31:04.920 --> 00:31:09.200
without hesitation, yes she had. Lastlie, for his part, told

633
00:31:09.200 --> 00:31:12.400
the court plainly what he feared, that Wendy might harm

634
00:31:12.480 --> 00:31:15.880
the child, that she might attempt a murder suicide, or

635
00:31:15.920 --> 00:31:18.880
that she might take Shane across the border into Mexico.

636
00:31:19.079 --> 00:31:21.480
This part reminded me of the case that you did recently,

637
00:31:21.599 --> 00:31:25.599
the Andrew Bagbie Doctor. Andrew Bagbie just it's such a

638
00:31:25.640 --> 00:31:29.519
hard situation when the mother is accused of murderer, but

639
00:31:29.640 --> 00:31:32.279
she hasn't been convicted yet. But at the same time,

640
00:31:32.359 --> 00:31:34.640
is it really a wise decision to have her with

641
00:31:35.119 --> 00:31:37.279
the child of the man she was accused of killing.

642
00:31:37.440 --> 00:31:40.720
Yeah, Protecting the child should always come before victims, writes,

643
00:31:40.759 --> 00:31:45.440
but it's tricky. The judge's ruling gave neither side everything

644
00:31:45.480 --> 00:31:49.160
they wanted until the murder case was resolved. Joint custody

645
00:31:49.240 --> 00:31:52.119
was awarded to Judy and Lloyd on one side and

646
00:31:52.240 --> 00:31:55.200
Leslie on the other. Leslie was granted a sixty day

647
00:31:55.240 --> 00:31:58.720
window to take Shane back to Maine. Wendy was restricted

648
00:31:58.759 --> 00:32:03.240
to supervised visits two hours every Saturday, at a neutral location.

649
00:32:03.839 --> 00:32:05.920
She was ordered to move out of her parents home.

650
00:32:06.400 --> 00:32:10.519
Both parties were required to undergo psychological evaluations and home

651
00:32:10.599 --> 00:32:14.279
studies by social workers. It wasn't perfect, but Leslie felt

652
00:32:14.319 --> 00:32:17.359
like things were pointing in the right direction. On June

653
00:32:17.359 --> 00:32:20.440
twenty seventh, Leslie and Frank boarded a plane with Shane

654
00:32:20.519 --> 00:32:22.759
and flew home to Maine. They were met at the

655
00:32:22.799 --> 00:32:25.559
airport by a crowd of family and friends, people who

656
00:32:25.599 --> 00:32:29.559
wrapped all three of them in hugs and shears and tears. Shane,

657
00:32:29.559 --> 00:32:31.880
not yet a year old, was carried into a home

658
00:32:32.079 --> 00:32:35.559
full of people who already loved him. The next morning,

659
00:32:35.759 --> 00:32:38.319
Leslie had a large portrait of Mike sitting on the

660
00:32:38.359 --> 00:32:41.599
floor propped against the wall. Shane crawled over to it,

661
00:32:41.799 --> 00:32:45.160
pulled himself up, and reached out to touch his father's space.

662
00:32:45.200 --> 00:32:46.440
What are you trying to do to us?

663
00:32:46.559 --> 00:32:46.799
I know?

664
00:32:47.559 --> 00:32:48.119
Ah.

665
00:32:48.200 --> 00:32:50.839
As the custody battle wore on, Wendy began to worry

666
00:32:50.839 --> 00:32:54.039
about something closer to home. What if once her legal

667
00:32:54.079 --> 00:32:57.119
troubles were resolved, her own parents refused to give the

668
00:32:57.200 --> 00:33:00.880
children back. It wasn't an irrational fear. Judy and Lloyd

669
00:33:00.920 --> 00:33:03.640
had made clear that they intended to hold on to Shane,

670
00:33:03.759 --> 00:33:06.839
and their contempt for Wendy had been building for months.

671
00:33:07.160 --> 00:33:09.960
The next time Wendy visited her parents' home, she brought

672
00:33:09.960 --> 00:33:13.000
a hidden tape recorder, planning to capture something she could

673
00:33:13.079 --> 00:33:15.960
use against her parents someday if she needed. She didn't

674
00:33:16.039 --> 00:33:18.960
have to wait long. With Wendy present and three year

675
00:33:18.960 --> 00:33:23.079
old Tristan in the room, Lloyd began not arguing, not confronting,

676
00:33:23.240 --> 00:33:25.440
but singing. He made up a little song.

677
00:33:25.680 --> 00:33:27.599
So I want to preface this before you go on

678
00:33:28.000 --> 00:33:31.079
in the book that I read. This song or whatever

679
00:33:31.119 --> 00:33:34.759
it is, went on for literally five or six pages.

680
00:33:35.079 --> 00:33:37.559
I included a little bit of it verbatim in here

681
00:33:37.599 --> 00:33:39.599
so you could get an idea of this, because this

682
00:33:39.839 --> 00:33:40.920
just blew my mind.

683
00:33:40.960 --> 00:33:42.880
But this is a recording, so you know what happened.

684
00:33:42.960 --> 00:33:47.079
Yes, And so this is Lloyd talking to his grandson

685
00:33:47.119 --> 00:33:50.240
who is three years old, and his daughter Wendy is

686
00:33:50.279 --> 00:33:51.480
in the room at the same time.

687
00:33:51.799 --> 00:33:55.160
Her hates her family, She hates her family, Her hates

688
00:33:55.200 --> 00:33:58.599
her whole family. She despises her mom. She wishes her dad,

689
00:33:58.720 --> 00:34:01.160
she hates her pa. She wished him dead. She hates

690
00:34:01.200 --> 00:34:04.319
her brother, she wishes him dead, she wishes her wishes

691
00:34:04.359 --> 00:34:08.519
her family dead, dead dead. Well, that's a beautiful song. Yeah,

692
00:34:08.599 --> 00:34:10.840
he kept going. He's saying about how Wendy wished her

693
00:34:10.920 --> 00:34:14.079
children would get run over, flattened like a pancake, so

694
00:34:14.079 --> 00:34:16.679
she'd have nothing left to worry about. He's saying that

695
00:34:16.760 --> 00:34:19.760
she hated everyone in the world, including her own kids.

696
00:34:20.039 --> 00:34:22.239
Then he switched to the tune of He's got the

697
00:34:22.280 --> 00:34:24.800
whole world in his hands? Do you want to sing?

698
00:34:24.920 --> 00:34:25.960
Because I do not see?

699
00:34:26.039 --> 00:34:26.840
No, you go for it.

700
00:34:27.000 --> 00:34:29.400
Wendy hates the whole world. Wendy hates the whole world,

701
00:34:29.519 --> 00:34:32.320
hates the whole world, even the little kids. Wendy's so

702
00:34:32.440 --> 00:34:35.400
full of hate. Wendy stayed quiet through all of it,

703
00:34:35.519 --> 00:34:38.800
knowing the recorder was running. Then Lloyd stopped singing and

704
00:34:38.840 --> 00:34:42.400
turned his attention to Tristan directly. Watch it, Poppy, watch it.

705
00:34:42.440 --> 00:34:44.440
She'll try to strangle you. She's going to try to

706
00:34:44.559 --> 00:34:47.079
kill you. She kills them all, all the animals at

707
00:34:47.119 --> 00:34:49.960
the clinic. You'll be next. Don't trust her. She'll put

708
00:34:50.000 --> 00:34:52.320
you up on that table and kill you. They go

709
00:34:52.360 --> 00:34:54.719
in and expect to come out alive, and she kills

710
00:34:54.760 --> 00:34:58.360
them dead. Better watch it. She'll rip your heart right out,

711
00:34:58.760 --> 00:35:03.480
that's so disturbing that he's talking to. At some point

712
00:35:03.559 --> 00:35:06.079
during all of this, Tristan looked up at his mother

713
00:35:06.280 --> 00:35:11.880
and asked, Mommy, did you kill somebody? Wendy answered quietly, no, baby, pause.

714
00:35:11.960 --> 00:35:14.880
Brainwashing you, that's all, because three year olds know what

715
00:35:14.920 --> 00:35:15.679
brainwashing is.

716
00:35:15.840 --> 00:35:16.519
Yeah, exactly.

717
00:35:17.320 --> 00:35:21.000
Lloyd Davidson had throughout the entire ordeal positioned himself as

718
00:35:21.039 --> 00:35:23.599
a defender of his family, a man holding things together

719
00:35:23.639 --> 00:35:27.000
while his daughter faced criminal charges. This was the same

720
00:35:27.079 --> 00:35:29.320
man doing this in front of a three year old.

721
00:35:29.760 --> 00:35:32.679
Whatever Wendy had done, the tape made one thing clear

722
00:35:33.039 --> 00:35:36.000
that davidson household was not a safe place for the

723
00:35:36.079 --> 00:35:37.119
children to grow up.

724
00:35:37.320 --> 00:35:40.880
It's just that that chapter of the book. I just

725
00:35:41.039 --> 00:35:43.800
my head almost exploded because I just how can I

726
00:35:43.840 --> 00:35:47.079
can't even imagine doing something like it, Saying things like

727
00:35:47.079 --> 00:35:49.719
that to a three year old. It just makes no sense.

728
00:35:50.079 --> 00:35:53.679
It's unbelievable. But I wanted to backtrack just a second.

729
00:35:53.920 --> 00:35:57.360
What happened between Wendy and her parents. Did her parents

730
00:35:57.559 --> 00:36:00.360
they believed the case being built against her that she

731
00:36:00.480 --> 00:36:01.000
killed Mike.

732
00:36:01.199 --> 00:36:03.760
I don't think so. I think that Wendy felt like

733
00:36:04.039 --> 00:36:06.159
I think they knew that Wendy was going to end

734
00:36:06.199 --> 00:36:09.079
up going to prison probably, and I think in Wendy's

735
00:36:09.159 --> 00:36:10.719
mind she was like, Ah, this is going to be

736
00:36:10.760 --> 00:36:13.079
over soon. I'm going to be back, and she was.

737
00:36:13.360 --> 00:36:16.280
I think she was paranoid and worried that her parents

738
00:36:16.320 --> 00:36:18.639
were trying to take the kids from her, and that was,

739
00:36:18.840 --> 00:36:20.400
you know, the way she responded.

740
00:36:20.840 --> 00:36:23.360
Back in Main, the community around the Severance family had

741
00:36:23.400 --> 00:36:25.880
been showing up in the way that small towns do.

742
00:36:26.440 --> 00:36:29.360
In July, friends and neighbors donated more than five hundred

743
00:36:29.360 --> 00:36:32.519
household items to a yard sale to help fund Leslie's

744
00:36:32.519 --> 00:36:36.000
custody fight. The generosity was real, and it always needed.

745
00:36:36.119 --> 00:36:39.480
The legal bills were mounting. Every trip to Texas costs

746
00:36:39.559 --> 00:36:42.480
money that Leslie didn't have been. On what would have

747
00:36:42.480 --> 00:36:45.039
been Mike's twenty fifth birthday, well I forgot how young

748
00:36:45.119 --> 00:36:48.440
he was. A package arrived at the Severans home. It

749
00:36:48.559 --> 00:36:52.039
was from Wendy. Inside were gifts for Shane, flowers with

750
00:36:52.079 --> 00:36:54.440
a note asking that they be placed on Mike's grave,

751
00:36:54.679 --> 00:36:57.679
and a birthday card. On the card, she had written, Mike,

752
00:36:58.000 --> 00:37:01.719
Happy Birthday, Love Wendy. Wow, she is a little old

753
00:37:01.719 --> 00:37:04.440
to do. Those there happened to be a reporter present

754
00:37:04.480 --> 00:37:06.920
when Leslie opened Why was there a reporter present?

755
00:37:07.000 --> 00:37:09.119
I think he was being interviewed by the local newspaper.

756
00:37:09.440 --> 00:37:12.639
He read the card and his composure broke quote. I

757
00:37:12.760 --> 00:37:15.039
just don't know what to make of this. God damn it.

758
00:37:15.159 --> 00:37:17.360
She dumped him in a pond and stabbed him forty

759
00:37:17.360 --> 00:37:20.480
one times, and now she wishes him a happy birthday.

760
00:37:20.719 --> 00:37:24.800
It's vicious and revolting. Maybe we should respond by saying, Wendy,

761
00:37:24.840 --> 00:37:27.039
please take these flowers out to the pond where you

762
00:37:27.119 --> 00:37:30.559
buried him. A few weeks after that, Wendy wrote Leslie

763
00:37:30.599 --> 00:37:33.079
a long letter. In it, she told him that once

764
00:37:33.119 --> 00:37:35.280
this mess was all cleared up, she hoped that they

765
00:37:35.320 --> 00:37:38.960
could have a good relationship her and the whole seven's family.

766
00:37:39.400 --> 00:37:42.039
In August, Leslie flew back to Texas with Shane for

767
00:37:42.119 --> 00:37:46.320
another custody hearing. The Davidson family's attorneys went on the offensive,

768
00:37:46.440 --> 00:37:49.639
accusing Leslie of using his grandson as a fundraising tool,

769
00:37:49.920 --> 00:37:52.440
a reference to the yard sale and the community events

770
00:37:52.440 --> 00:37:55.639
held in Mike's memory. Leslie pushed back, he needed his

771
00:37:55.679 --> 00:37:58.360
community support just to afford the plane tickets to come

772
00:37:58.400 --> 00:38:01.800
fight for his grandson. The judge wasn't persuaded either way.

773
00:38:01.960 --> 00:38:05.239
He rejected Leslie's petition for sole custody ahead of the

774
00:38:05.280 --> 00:38:08.920
trial and returned Shane to Judy and Lloyd, allowing Wendy

775
00:38:09.039 --> 00:38:12.679
her two hour supervised weekly visits. Leslie was given permission

776
00:38:12.679 --> 00:38:15.519
to see Shane on Saturdays and Sundays up to three

777
00:38:15.559 --> 00:38:18.280
times a month, between nine in the morning and six

778
00:38:18.320 --> 00:38:21.119
at night. For a man living in Maine, this was

779
00:38:21.199 --> 00:38:24.719
not ideal. Three trips a month to San Angelo, the flights,

780
00:38:24.760 --> 00:38:28.400
the hotels, the time away from work was simply not possible.

781
00:38:28.719 --> 00:38:33.320
Leslie flew home without his grandson. He was crushed. We'll

782
00:38:33.320 --> 00:38:34.639
be back after a break.

783
00:38:42.039 --> 00:38:44.559
There was another casualty in all of this, one that

784
00:38:44.599 --> 00:38:47.639
didn't make as many headlines, but was significant in its

785
00:38:47.679 --> 00:38:51.280
own way. Wendy's brother, Marshall Davidson, had been the one

786
00:38:51.280 --> 00:38:53.320
to call the police. He had been the one to

787
00:38:53.360 --> 00:38:56.400
tell detectives where to find Mike's body. He had done

788
00:38:56.440 --> 00:38:58.559
the right thing, but at the same time he was

789
00:38:58.599 --> 00:39:02.199
trying to support his sister, and it cost him nearly everything.

790
00:39:02.800 --> 00:39:06.119
After the arrest, Marshall had applied for a hardship transfer

791
00:39:06.239 --> 00:39:09.760
within the Texas Parks and Wildlife, hoping to move closer

792
00:39:09.800 --> 00:39:13.960
to San Angelo to support his family. Meanwhile, investigators called

793
00:39:13.960 --> 00:39:16.280
Marshall and asked him to bring in the pistol and

794
00:39:16.360 --> 00:39:19.400
boning knife that had gone missing from the clinic. His

795
00:39:19.559 --> 00:39:22.719
response surprised them. He said he wanted to hold onto

796
00:39:22.760 --> 00:39:25.840
the items until he had spoken with Wendy's attorney. For

797
00:39:25.880 --> 00:39:30.000
a fellow law enforcement officer to withhold potential evidence from

798
00:39:30.039 --> 00:39:34.320
an active homicide investigation and to be so unapologetic about

799
00:39:34.360 --> 00:39:38.440
it struck the investigators as deeply troubling. As it turned out,

800
00:39:38.559 --> 00:39:42.239
Internal Affairs at Texas Parks and Wildlife had opened an

801
00:39:42.280 --> 00:39:46.199
investigation into Marshall back in March. Not long after everything

802
00:39:46.280 --> 00:39:50.079
came to light, Investigators on the severance case told Internal

803
00:39:50.119 --> 00:39:53.559
Affairs that Marshall had lied to them, refused to cooperate,

804
00:39:53.760 --> 00:39:57.400
and may have tampered with evidence. In September, Marshall was

805
00:39:57.440 --> 00:40:00.880
formally notified that he was being considered for corrective action

806
00:40:01.360 --> 00:40:04.679
up to an including termination. He hired an attorney and

807
00:40:04.719 --> 00:40:08.039
prepared a response. In December two thousand and five, the

808
00:40:08.079 --> 00:40:12.320
decision came down. Marshall Davidson was fired. The internal affairs

809
00:40:12.360 --> 00:40:16.519
investigation had found that he had provided untruthful and misleading information,

810
00:40:16.960 --> 00:40:21.079
withheld information from investigators, and failed to cooperate with a

811
00:40:21.079 --> 00:40:27.519
homicide investigation. The department's conclusion was unambiguous. Marshall lacks the

812
00:40:27.519 --> 00:40:30.960
credibility and integrity to continue to function as a peace

813
00:40:31.000 --> 00:40:35.280
officer and a game warden for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

814
00:40:35.840 --> 00:40:39.000
In January two thousand six, Judy and Lloyd launched a

815
00:40:39.119 --> 00:40:42.320
letter writing campaign to the executive director of the Texas

816
00:40:42.360 --> 00:40:45.840
Parks and Wildlife Commission. They wrote about their son's dreams,

817
00:40:45.920 --> 00:40:49.440
his academic record, his character. They pointed out that he

818
00:40:49.519 --> 00:40:51.920
had been the one to turn his sister in. They

819
00:40:51.960 --> 00:40:55.239
said they believed Marshall had suffered a terrible injustice, but

820
00:40:55.360 --> 00:40:59.079
the department didn't budge. Marshall had been caught between loyalty

821
00:40:59.159 --> 00:41:02.960
to his family and his obligations as a law enforcement officer.

822
00:41:03.320 --> 00:41:07.719
He was just another casualty of Wendy's choices. Marshall's dream

823
00:41:07.800 --> 00:41:09.880
had been to be a game warden, and now that

824
00:41:10.000 --> 00:41:13.639
dream was over thanks to his loyalty to Wendy.

825
00:41:13.960 --> 00:41:16.639
Well, I've learned in all of these stories that we've

826
00:41:16.679 --> 00:41:19.360
told is if you're a fired police officer in one

827
00:41:19.480 --> 00:41:21.920
area doesn't mean that you can't find a job in

828
00:41:21.960 --> 00:41:22.840
another community.

829
00:41:22.960 --> 00:41:25.119
That is true, and I was not able to find

830
00:41:25.159 --> 00:41:27.480
out what happened to Marshall, but you're probably right. He's

831
00:41:27.519 --> 00:41:32.480
probably working somewhere else. Just after midnight on Sunday, August twentieth,

832
00:41:32.639 --> 00:41:36.159
customers at the Buffalo Wild Wings on Sherwood Way noticed

833
00:41:36.239 --> 00:41:39.360
something strange in the parking lot. A little boy, maybe

834
00:41:39.480 --> 00:41:43.159
four years old, was riding a yellow Mini Suzuki Quad

835
00:41:43.239 --> 00:41:47.239
Sport four wheeler in circles between the parked cars, crying

836
00:41:47.280 --> 00:41:51.239
for his mommy's twelve ten am on a Saturday night,

837
00:41:51.559 --> 00:41:54.599
the restaurant manager brought him inside. The boy said he

838
00:41:54.639 --> 00:41:57.079
didn't know where his mother was, and so the manager

839
00:41:57.159 --> 00:42:00.039
called the police. Someone in the restaurant mentioned that I

840
00:42:00.039 --> 00:42:03.000
had a four year old named Tristan Davidson lived right

841
00:42:03.039 --> 00:42:06.400
across the street at the veterinary Clinic. An officer went

842
00:42:06.440 --> 00:42:08.480
to the clinic and called the number on the sign.

843
00:42:08.880 --> 00:42:11.880
The answering service picked up, and he left a message.

844
00:42:11.920 --> 00:42:15.360
Minutes later, Wendy came rushing into the Buffalo Wild Wings.

845
00:42:15.800 --> 00:42:18.320
She told the officer she had put Tristan too bed

846
00:42:18.360 --> 00:42:21.519
and slipped out to Walmart for fifteen minutes. He must

847
00:42:21.519 --> 00:42:24.159
have woken up, gotten on his four wheeler, and made

848
00:42:24.199 --> 00:42:26.960
his way across five lanes of traffic on his own

849
00:42:27.320 --> 00:42:28.599
late on a Saturday night.

850
00:42:29.039 --> 00:42:32.199
Well, there are so many things wrong in this situation.

851
00:42:31.880 --> 00:42:33.960
So many things. And by the way, I did look

852
00:42:33.960 --> 00:42:36.159
at Google Maps to look at this road that he

853
00:42:36.280 --> 00:42:39.280
had crossed, and it was literally a five lane like

854
00:42:39.920 --> 00:42:41.920
two lanes on each side and a left turn lane.

855
00:42:42.480 --> 00:42:45.000
Obviously it's midnight on a Saturday night, but still, that's

856
00:42:45.000 --> 00:42:48.480
a really terrifying thought that he crossed this road.

857
00:42:48.960 --> 00:42:51.559
Yeah, is that like a tiny little four wheel like,

858
00:42:51.559 --> 00:42:53.159
how is it one for little kids?

859
00:42:53.280 --> 00:42:55.599
Yeah, it's one that a little kid would ride on.

860
00:42:55.679 --> 00:42:57.519
But yeah, still horrifying.

861
00:42:57.800 --> 00:42:59.760
So she told them that she had been at Walmart

862
00:42:59.760 --> 00:43:02.400
and just slipped out. The officers knew that her story

863
00:43:02.519 --> 00:43:05.119
was a lie because they had just seen her coming

864
00:43:05.159 --> 00:43:08.239
out of Graham Central Station, the nightclub just up the

865
00:43:08.320 --> 00:43:10.800
road that's the one where she and Mike had gone

866
00:43:10.880 --> 00:43:13.639
dancing on the last night of his life. Knowing she

867
00:43:13.760 --> 00:43:16.440
was caught in a lie, Wendy dropped the Walmart story.

868
00:43:16.719 --> 00:43:19.199
I made a bad choice, she said. It will never

869
00:43:19.280 --> 00:43:23.320
happen again. She was handcuffed and charged with child endangerment,

870
00:43:23.639 --> 00:43:27.199
Lloyd came into town and picked up Tristan. Until that night,

871
00:43:27.360 --> 00:43:30.719
Wendy had maintained a small but vocal group of supporters

872
00:43:30.760 --> 00:43:33.960
in San Angelo, people who had believed her story or

873
00:43:34.079 --> 00:43:36.440
at least given her the benefit of the doubt. The

874
00:43:36.480 --> 00:43:39.639
next morning, when the story about Tristan hit the local news,

875
00:43:39.800 --> 00:43:43.159
that changed for many. This was the moment a woman

876
00:43:43.199 --> 00:43:46.239
awaiting trial for murdering her husband had left her four

877
00:43:46.280 --> 00:43:48.239
year old son alone in the middle of the night

878
00:43:48.320 --> 00:43:50.920
to go to a bar while a homicide charge hung

879
00:43:50.960 --> 00:43:54.960
over her head. Whatever goodwill remained evaporated overnight.

880
00:43:55.360 --> 00:43:58.199
The trial had originally been scheduled to begin in March

881
00:43:58.239 --> 00:44:01.840
two thousand and six, didn't. The defense moved to push

882
00:44:01.880 --> 00:44:05.320
it to April seventeenth, then to May fifteenth, then to

883
00:44:05.480 --> 00:44:09.159
August twenty first, and then October sixteenth. Each delay was

884
00:44:09.199 --> 00:44:13.360
another inconvenience for the Severn's family. Plane tickets booked and canceled,

885
00:44:13.480 --> 00:44:16.239
plans made and unmade, a trip to San Angelo that

886
00:44:16.360 --> 00:44:19.559
kept receding into the future, and through all of it,

887
00:44:19.639 --> 00:44:23.679
a seventeen month old Shane remained in legal limbo, his

888
00:44:23.840 --> 00:44:26.440
future tied to the outcome of a trial. It couldn't

889
00:44:26.440 --> 00:44:29.199
seem to get off the ground before the trial began.

890
00:44:29.239 --> 00:44:32.239
In earnest, the defense filed a motion to suppress all

891
00:44:32.320 --> 00:44:35.199
evidence that followed from the tracking device being placed on

892
00:44:35.280 --> 00:44:39.280
Wendy's car. The argument was straightforward. Placing a tracker on

893
00:44:39.360 --> 00:44:43.400
her vehicle without a proper judicial warrant was an unreasonable

894
00:44:43.440 --> 00:44:47.119
search and seizure, a violation of her Fourth Amendment rights.

895
00:44:47.360 --> 00:44:50.960
If the judge agreed, a significant piece of the prosecution's

896
00:44:51.039 --> 00:44:55.440
case would be thrown out. The Texas Rangers' concerns, raised

897
00:44:55.480 --> 00:44:58.719
months earlier when the Air Force had gone ahead without

898
00:44:58.760 --> 00:45:02.519
a civilian warrant, had been prescient. This was exactly what

899
00:45:02.679 --> 00:45:05.400
he had worried about. A hearing was held, but the

900
00:45:05.480 --> 00:45:09.280
judge ruled against the defense. No Fourth Amendment violation the

901
00:45:09.320 --> 00:45:13.320
tracking device evidence would stand. It was a critical moment.

902
00:45:13.639 --> 00:45:17.079
Without that ruling going their way, the prosecution's path to

903
00:45:17.159 --> 00:45:21.079
conviction would have been considerably narrower. With it, the case

904
00:45:21.119 --> 00:45:25.000
against Wendy Davidson looked, in the words of those watching closely,

905
00:45:25.360 --> 00:45:29.400
like a slam dunk. Jury's selection began on October sixteenth,

906
00:45:29.559 --> 00:45:33.039
two thousand and six, nearly two years after Mike Severns

907
00:45:33.119 --> 00:45:36.639
had been killed, but the trial didn't happen. With their

908
00:45:36.639 --> 00:45:39.880
emotion to suppress deny, the defense team made a calculation.

909
00:45:40.320 --> 00:45:43.280
If Wendy went to trial and was convicted, she was

910
00:45:43.320 --> 00:45:47.239
looking at a sentence anywhere between nine and ninety nine years.

911
00:45:47.760 --> 00:45:51.480
A no contest plea was a different proposition that allowed

912
00:45:51.519 --> 00:45:54.920
her to avoid admitting guilt, preserved her right to appeal,

913
00:45:55.199 --> 00:45:59.039
and would likely met her a lighter sentence. Wendy later

914
00:45:59.079 --> 00:46:01.199
claimed that her turn ernies had told her that if

915
00:46:01.239 --> 00:46:03.599
she entered this plea, she would never spend a day

916
00:46:03.639 --> 00:46:07.159
in state prison and she would not lose her veterinary license.

917
00:46:07.440 --> 00:46:12.079
On that basis, Wendy Davis had pleaded no contest. The

918
00:46:12.159 --> 00:46:15.519
judge pronounced her guilty anyway that's how a no contest

919
00:46:15.559 --> 00:46:18.719
plea works, and sentenced her to twenty five years on

920
00:46:18.760 --> 00:46:22.519
the murder conviction, with ten years each on the tampering charges,

921
00:46:22.599 --> 00:46:26.119
all to run concurrently. She would be eligible for parole

922
00:46:26.400 --> 00:46:29.280
in thirteen years. Wendy was let out of the court

923
00:46:29.440 --> 00:46:31.920
room in tears, this time feeling like she'd been betrayed

924
00:46:31.920 --> 00:46:34.920
by her own lawyers. December, she wrote a letter to

925
00:46:35.039 --> 00:46:38.519
Judge Tom Gossitt, who had presided over her criminal case.

926
00:46:38.920 --> 00:46:41.559
She said she had pleaded no contest to charges she

927
00:46:41.679 --> 00:46:45.000
was perfectly innocent of, on the absolute assurance of her

928
00:46:45.039 --> 00:46:48.599
attorneys that an appeal would resolve anything within three to

929
00:46:48.719 --> 00:46:51.480
nine months. She said she'd expected to remain in the

930
00:46:51.519 --> 00:46:54.440
local county jail while that appeal worked its way through

931
00:46:54.480 --> 00:46:57.199
the courts. Now she was being told that she would

932
00:46:57.239 --> 00:47:00.320
be transferred to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice within

933
00:47:00.320 --> 00:47:03.039
a matter of weeks, and that was not acceptable to her.

934
00:47:03.559 --> 00:47:06.880
Partly that's because she wanted to be available for custody hearings,

935
00:47:07.159 --> 00:47:10.199
but also she told the judge she had just found

936
00:47:10.239 --> 00:47:13.360
out that she was pregnant and she feared for the

937
00:47:13.400 --> 00:47:16.679
safety of her child in estate prison. She begged him

938
00:47:16.719 --> 00:47:19.480
on her hands and knees. She wrote, please have mercy,

939
00:47:19.760 --> 00:47:23.119
Please keep her here until the appeal was finished. She

940
00:47:23.199 --> 00:47:26.400
sent a similar letter to the judge overseeing the custody case,

941
00:47:26.519 --> 00:47:29.360
pleading to be held locally for the sake of her sons.

942
00:47:29.719 --> 00:47:32.840
She enclosed a fourteen stands up home she had written

943
00:47:32.880 --> 00:47:36.880
called Angels, in which she wrote about Tristan and Shane's.

944
00:47:36.480 --> 00:47:38.840
Sorry I don't have that poem to read Moly.

945
00:47:38.719 --> 00:47:42.239
Molly She later admitted that she wasn't pregnant, but spored

946
00:47:42.239 --> 00:47:44.480
that she believed that she was at the time. Oh

947
00:47:44.480 --> 00:47:45.719
that's good because I thought she was.

948
00:47:45.920 --> 00:47:49.800
Yeah. These letters, though, they reak of someone writing a

949
00:47:49.840 --> 00:47:54.360
complaint about, you know, something unfair conditions, like she's being

950
00:47:54.440 --> 00:47:57.760
treated unfairly, and she just thought all this would be

951
00:47:57.880 --> 00:48:00.199
you know, done, and it would appeal and be over,

952
00:48:00.320 --> 00:48:03.360
and she just is, you know, this is unsatisfactory to her.

953
00:48:03.760 --> 00:48:06.800
Neither letter made a difference. On January ninth, two thousand

954
00:48:06.840 --> 00:48:09.920
and seven, Wendy Davidson was transferred into the custody of

955
00:48:09.960 --> 00:48:13.360
the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. A month later, her

956
00:48:13.400 --> 00:48:16.840
license was revoked, though the board left open the possibility

957
00:48:16.840 --> 00:48:20.159
that she could apply for reinstatement after her release. The

958
00:48:20.239 --> 00:48:24.119
no contest plea had left almost every meaningful question unanswered.

959
00:48:24.320 --> 00:48:27.719
There was no trial, no testimony, no cross examination, no

960
00:48:27.840 --> 00:48:30.599
explanation of what had actually happened in the clinic the

961
00:48:30.719 --> 00:48:33.760
night of January fourteenth, two thousand and five. Would the

962
00:48:33.800 --> 00:48:36.519
defense have pointed the finger at someone else, at Lloyd,

963
00:48:36.639 --> 00:48:40.320
at Judy, at some unnamed third party. No one will

964
00:48:40.320 --> 00:48:43.840
ever know. To this day, Wendy Davidson has never admitted

965
00:48:43.840 --> 00:48:46.599
that she killed Mike Severance for the Severns family, the

966
00:48:46.679 --> 00:48:50.920
plea was not justice. It was just an ending, abrupt, incomplete,

967
00:48:51.079 --> 00:48:55.199
and unsatisfying. Leslie had lost his son, He had fought

968
00:48:55.199 --> 00:48:58.719
for his grandson. He had sat through depositions and custody

969
00:48:58.719 --> 00:49:01.320
hearings and watched a woman in charge with killing his

970
00:49:01.440 --> 00:49:04.559
son sent birthday flowers to his house. And in the

971
00:49:04.639 --> 00:49:07.280
end there was no verdict, no moment of accountability, just

972
00:49:07.320 --> 00:49:09.800
to form filled in a courthouse and a woman who

973
00:49:09.920 --> 00:49:13.760
walked into a van headed for state prison, still insisting

974
00:49:14.159 --> 00:49:15.559
she hadn't done anything wrong.

975
00:49:15.880 --> 00:49:18.760
Such a frustrating conclusion to this case, like not having

976
00:49:19.280 --> 00:49:22.320
that trial that where all the information would really come out.

977
00:49:22.639 --> 00:49:23.880
Yeah, no justice for Mike.

978
00:49:23.960 --> 00:49:27.320
Really, the custody battle for Shane had one more chapter

979
00:49:27.440 --> 00:49:30.760
to write, and it was just as painful. During a deposition,

980
00:49:30.840 --> 00:49:34.239
Wendy revealed that she had secretly recorded her father and

981
00:49:34.280 --> 00:49:36.639
that she had turned the tape over to her attorney.

982
00:49:36.760 --> 00:49:39.119
So up until this point that tape of her dad

983
00:49:39.159 --> 00:49:42.280
going on this weird rant, no one actually knew about it.

984
00:49:42.599 --> 00:49:46.519
Leslie's attorney was furious the recording should have been disclosed

985
00:49:46.639 --> 00:49:49.719
during discovery, and it hadn't been. It took several more

986
00:49:49.800 --> 00:49:53.360
days before they finally obtained a copy. When Leslie's attorney

987
00:49:53.400 --> 00:49:56.320
heard it, Lloyd Davidson singing to a three year old

988
00:49:56.360 --> 00:49:59.199
about how his mother wanted the whole family dead, telling

989
00:49:59.239 --> 00:50:01.639
that same child not to trust her, that she would

990
00:50:01.679 --> 00:50:03.400
put him on the table and kill him the way

991
00:50:03.440 --> 00:50:07.119
she killed the animals. He raised serious concerns about Lloyd's

992
00:50:07.199 --> 00:50:10.559
mental stability and asked that the children be removed from

993
00:50:10.599 --> 00:50:15.360
the Davidson home immediately. Child Protective Services reviewed the tape, and,

994
00:50:15.639 --> 00:50:19.119
for reasons that were never made entirely clear, decided not

995
00:50:19.199 --> 00:50:23.159
to investigate further. The tape was nonetheless admitted into the

996
00:50:23.199 --> 00:50:27.519
custody proceedings, and the testimony that followed painted a stark picture.

997
00:50:27.920 --> 00:50:30.440
Dozens of people showed up to speak on behalf of

998
00:50:30.480 --> 00:50:34.239
the Severance family. Not one person came forward to testify

999
00:50:34.280 --> 00:50:38.079
in support of Judy and Lloyd Davidson. Despite all of that,

1000
00:50:38.280 --> 00:50:42.360
a psychologist testified that separating Shane from Tristan, the only

1001
00:50:42.440 --> 00:50:46.000
consistent presence in the boy's short life, would be detrimental.

1002
00:50:46.320 --> 00:50:49.760
The judge agreed and awarded primary custody to Judy and

1003
00:50:49.880 --> 00:50:53.920
Lloyd Leslie's attorneys appealed. He raised the point that Judy

1004
00:50:53.960 --> 00:50:56.719
and Lloyd stood to receive more than two thousand dollars

1005
00:50:56.800 --> 00:51:00.000
a month in Air Force survivor benefits and social stife

1006
00:51:00.000 --> 00:51:03.039
security to care for the boys, along with a five

1007
00:51:03.199 --> 00:51:07.039
hundred thousand dollars life insurance payout. They were, in other words,

1008
00:51:07.159 --> 00:51:10.760
financially benefiting from the murder of Shane's father. But the

1009
00:51:10.800 --> 00:51:14.400
appeal was rejected. In the end, Judy and Lloyd got

1010
00:51:14.440 --> 00:51:18.599
primary custody, but Leslie got Shane for holidays, spring break

1011
00:51:18.679 --> 00:51:21.360
and summers. It wasn't what he had fought for, but

1012
00:51:21.519 --> 00:51:25.119
it was something. Shane would know his father's family, he

1013
00:51:25.159 --> 00:51:28.719
would know Maine, and he would know where he came from.

1014
00:51:28.800 --> 00:51:31.719
In March two thousand and eight, Wendy's appeal was denied.

1015
00:51:32.119 --> 00:51:34.760
The argument her attorneys had made was the same one

1016
00:51:34.800 --> 00:51:37.840
that had been raised before trial, that the tracking device

1017
00:51:37.920 --> 00:51:41.519
placed on her car by Air Force investigators violated her

1018
00:51:41.559 --> 00:51:45.039
Fourth Amendment rights, as well as protections under the Texas

1019
00:51:45.079 --> 00:51:49.119
Constitution and the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure. The core

1020
00:51:49.159 --> 00:51:52.440
of it was a genuine legal question. Wendy Davidson was

1021
00:51:52.480 --> 00:51:55.599
a civilian, not a member of the military. The same

1022
00:51:55.719 --> 00:51:59.840
constitutional standards that governed local police should her attorneys are

1023
00:52:00.519 --> 00:52:04.760
governed federal investigators acting against a civilian. The courts didn't

1024
00:52:04.760 --> 00:52:07.079
see it that way. The trial judge had found that

1025
00:52:07.159 --> 00:52:10.920
the Air Force followed its own proper procedures. Investigators had

1026
00:52:10.960 --> 00:52:14.719
consulted with the US Attorney's office and obtained approval from

1027
00:52:14.719 --> 00:52:19.440
their regional commander before placing the device under military guidelines.

1028
00:52:19.599 --> 00:52:23.440
That was sufficient. No judicial warrant was required as long

1029
00:52:23.480 --> 00:52:26.679
as the tracker was installed in a public area. Wendy's

1030
00:52:26.679 --> 00:52:30.039
attorneys had one more argument to make. She conceded. They

1031
00:52:30.039 --> 00:52:33.239
said that investigators could lawfully track her car on a

1032
00:52:33.280 --> 00:52:37.119
public road, but once she turned off onto private ranch land,

1033
00:52:37.400 --> 00:52:40.039
passed through a locked gate, and drove to a stock

1034
00:52:40.159 --> 00:52:43.599
pond on a secluded property. At that point, she had

1035
00:52:43.639 --> 00:52:47.360
a reasonable expectation of privacy. What happened after that gate

1036
00:52:47.440 --> 00:52:51.679
closed was her business. The appeals court disagreed. It found

1037
00:52:51.719 --> 00:52:55.239
there was insufficient evidence to establish that Wendy had any

1038
00:52:55.320 --> 00:52:59.840
reasonable expectation of privacy on Terrell Sheen's property, and be

1039
00:53:00.119 --> 00:53:03.679
on that. It cited a longstanding legal principle, there is

1040
00:53:03.800 --> 00:53:07.519
no expectation of privacy in an open field. The conviction

1041
00:53:07.840 --> 00:53:12.159
was upheld. Wendy Davidson remains in prison today. She became

1042
00:53:12.239 --> 00:53:15.559
eligible for parole in twenty nineteen and has been denied

1043
00:53:15.639 --> 00:53:18.119
every time she has come up for a review. She

1044
00:53:18.280 --> 00:53:21.280
was most recently considered in May twenty twenty four and

1045
00:53:21.360 --> 00:53:24.639
denied again. Her next review is scheduled for May twenty

1046
00:53:24.679 --> 00:53:27.840
twenty seven. If she does serve her full sentence, her

1047
00:53:27.920 --> 00:53:31.920
latest possible release date is October twenty thirty one, when

1048
00:53:31.960 --> 00:53:35.000
she will be fifty three years old. In twenty twenty one,

1049
00:53:35.119 --> 00:53:37.760
she appeared in a twenty twenty episode about the case.

1050
00:53:38.039 --> 00:53:41.360
Here's a short clip of Wendy explaining why she didn't

1051
00:53:41.400 --> 00:53:44.039
call the police and how she thought she would move

1052
00:53:44.159 --> 00:53:48.519
Mike's body. How did you move the inert weight of

1053
00:53:48.519 --> 00:53:50.159
a one hundred and sixty pound man.

1054
00:53:50.599 --> 00:53:53.119
Well, there was a box setting over in the corner,

1055
00:53:53.719 --> 00:53:55.679
and in my mind, I thought I was just going

1056
00:53:55.760 --> 00:53:57.880
to roll the body in the box, and I was

1057
00:53:57.920 --> 00:53:59.519
going to pick the box up and put it in.

1058
00:53:59.480 --> 00:54:01.599
The back of the a cardboard box.

1059
00:54:01.960 --> 00:54:04.519
Yes, that's what I thought in my crazy mind. Look,

1060
00:54:04.559 --> 00:54:06.880
I can't make this stuff up. This is real, Okay,

1061
00:54:07.400 --> 00:54:10.159
this is so crazy, Like you can't make this stuff

1062
00:54:10.239 --> 00:54:12.480
up like Dan Kunks couldn't make this up.

1063
00:54:13.519 --> 00:54:16.679
That clip of her laughing just she's talking about moving

1064
00:54:16.719 --> 00:54:20.840
her husband's dead body and she starts laughing hysterically. Here's

1065
00:54:20.880 --> 00:54:23.639
another short clip where she talks about stabbing the body

1066
00:54:23.719 --> 00:54:24.880
to keep it from floating.

1067
00:54:25.559 --> 00:54:29.559
I knew error made bodies float, so I decided to

1068
00:54:29.719 --> 00:54:33.119
make holes in the body, bent holes like so the

1069
00:54:33.159 --> 00:54:34.039
air could escape.

1070
00:54:34.199 --> 00:54:38.360
So you were actually stabbing your dead husband's abdomen to

1071
00:54:38.360 --> 00:54:40.880
make these holes so that gases could escape.

1072
00:54:43.360 --> 00:54:43.599
Yes.

1073
00:54:44.920 --> 00:54:47.440
In the interview, she said that she last spoke to

1074
00:54:47.519 --> 00:54:49.840
her parents in two thousand and nine, and that she

1075
00:54:49.920 --> 00:54:52.320
has not seen her sons since they were two and

1076
00:54:52.440 --> 00:54:55.159
five years old. She said she hopes to reconnect with

1077
00:54:55.239 --> 00:54:58.039
them someday when she's out. The people who knew Mike

1078
00:54:58.119 --> 00:55:01.239
Severan's best all said some version of the same thing.

1079
00:55:01.519 --> 00:55:04.039
He always tried to do things the right way by

1080
00:55:04.079 --> 00:55:06.880
the book. When a new soldier arrived at Dayas Air

1081
00:55:06.920 --> 00:55:09.239
Force Base, Mike was the one who took him under

1082
00:55:09.280 --> 00:55:11.360
his wing and tried to keep him on the straight

1083
00:55:11.400 --> 00:55:13.880
and narrow. He had worked his way up to crew chief,

1084
00:55:13.960 --> 00:55:16.800
and he was proud of it. He was shy, which

1085
00:55:16.840 --> 00:55:19.280
is maybe why he loved to dance so much. He

1086
00:55:19.320 --> 00:55:22.119
had taught himself the Texas two step and figured out

1087
00:55:22.159 --> 00:55:24.440
that if you weren't great at talking to someone, you

1088
00:55:24.440 --> 00:55:27.280
could always just ask them to dance. By all accounts,

1089
00:55:27.320 --> 00:55:30.079
he was pretty good at it. His brother Frank called

1090
00:55:30.159 --> 00:55:33.400
him his superman. He was always there when Frank needed him,

1091
00:55:33.559 --> 00:55:36.280
the steady older brother who had stepped up at fourteen

1092
00:55:36.360 --> 00:55:39.400
when their mother died and never really stopped stepping up

1093
00:55:39.480 --> 00:55:46.400
after that. He survived five deployments Afghanistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Uzbekistan.

1094
00:55:46.719 --> 00:55:50.239
He volunteered for the dangerous missions but came home every time.

1095
00:55:50.599 --> 00:55:53.519
But he didn't survive even six months of marriage to

1096
00:55:53.559 --> 00:55:57.360
Wendy Davidson. He made it home from Afghanistan and Iraq,

1097
00:55:57.480 --> 00:56:00.800
but he didn't make it home from San Angelo. Every year,

1098
00:56:00.880 --> 00:56:05.320
the community in Lee, Maine gathers to remember him. There's music, dancing,

1099
00:56:05.480 --> 00:56:08.280
and a scholarship raised in his name, given to a

1100
00:56:08.320 --> 00:56:10.840
young person with their whole life out of them. It's

1101
00:56:10.880 --> 00:56:13.480
a small town of eight hundred people, but they haven't

1102
00:56:13.519 --> 00:56:17.159
forgotten Mike. Rest in peace, Mike. I wanted to mention

1103
00:56:17.239 --> 00:56:19.559
my main source for this case was a book by

1104
00:56:19.599 --> 00:56:23.519
Diane Fanning called a Poisoned Passion, A young mother, her

1105
00:56:23.559 --> 00:56:26.880
war hero husband, and the marriage that ended in murder.

1106
00:56:27.320 --> 00:56:30.199
What do you think was justice done in this case?

1107
00:56:30.960 --> 00:56:35.599
Wendy is in jail, so I guess.

1108
00:56:34.920 --> 00:56:37.880
For twenty five years, which I don't know. Maybe that's

1109
00:56:37.880 --> 00:56:39.360
a reasonable sense, right.

1110
00:56:39.199 --> 00:56:40.639
I mean, she should be in jail for the rest

1111
00:56:40.639 --> 00:56:42.880
of her life, but at least she is in jail now.

1112
00:56:43.000 --> 00:56:45.519
The way she was talking, I was afraid she was

1113
00:56:45.559 --> 00:56:48.159
going to get off. Yeah, like how her lawyers, I

1114
00:56:48.159 --> 00:56:50.000
don't why did her lawyers say that to her.

1115
00:56:50.440 --> 00:56:52.119
I don't know that they'd said that to her. That's

1116
00:56:52.159 --> 00:56:54.360
what she says they saw, Oh maybe that's what she

1117
00:56:54.360 --> 00:56:56.599
she you know, as we've seen, she's pretty she was

1118
00:56:56.639 --> 00:56:59.440
pretty delusional. I mean, I really think she I don't

1119
00:56:59.440 --> 00:57:01.400
know if it was just her telling a story, but

1120
00:57:01.480 --> 00:57:03.000
she really seemed like she was not.

1121
00:57:03.519 --> 00:57:06.000
That's what they didn't say that, but that's what she heard.

1122
00:57:06.599 --> 00:57:09.280
Yeah, that's what I believe. We talked a little bit

1123
00:57:09.280 --> 00:57:11.440
about this, But do you believe that Wendy acted alone

1124
00:57:11.559 --> 00:57:13.880
or do you think there's a possibility that Judy or

1125
00:57:14.039 --> 00:57:15.639
Lloyd potentially helped.

1126
00:57:15.400 --> 00:57:17.519
Her I think that's a really good question. But I

1127
00:57:17.559 --> 00:57:19.800
think that Wendy would have definitely threw them under the

1128
00:57:19.800 --> 00:57:21.280
boss if given the opportunity.

1129
00:57:21.400 --> 00:57:23.559
That's what I believe too. And the fact that she

1130
00:57:23.679 --> 00:57:27.199
and her parents haven't talked apparently for the last you know,

1131
00:57:27.360 --> 00:57:31.039
several years, somebody would have turned on the others.

1132
00:57:31.760 --> 00:57:34.159
And if her parents had helped, I think they would

1133
00:57:34.199 --> 00:57:37.199
have had a lot of guilt that they hadn't been

1134
00:57:37.239 --> 00:57:40.119
convicted to and they probably would have taken the voice

1135
00:57:40.159 --> 00:57:41.559
to see her or something like that.

1136
00:57:41.920 --> 00:57:46.519
Yeah, I suppose so her parents, her family. I just

1137
00:57:46.599 --> 00:57:50.079
I found myself really disliking everyone in her family. It's

1138
00:57:50.119 --> 00:57:53.320
not surprising to dislike Wendy, but I really like her

1139
00:57:53.320 --> 00:57:56.679
mom and dad just don't seem like very good people.

1140
00:57:57.039 --> 00:57:59.480
In the book that I read, the author Diane Fanning,

1141
00:57:59.679 --> 00:58:03.079
I think she interviewed at least Lloyd the dad, maybe

1142
00:58:03.119 --> 00:58:05.519
the mom as well. But in the epilogue of the book,

1143
00:58:05.559 --> 00:58:07.159
she wrote, I thought it was kind of funny. She

1144
00:58:07.239 --> 00:58:10.239
said that when she talked to Lloyd at the like

1145
00:58:10.239 --> 00:58:12.000
the very last time she talked to him, he said,

1146
00:58:12.360 --> 00:58:15.320
just do your best to write things honestly and truly,

1147
00:58:15.440 --> 00:58:17.559
And she was like, I think I did that, and

1148
00:58:17.719 --> 00:58:19.760
you know, it didn't paint a good picture of Lloyd

1149
00:58:20.039 --> 00:58:20.800
or Judy.

1150
00:58:21.199 --> 00:58:24.239
Yeah, did he have any explanation of how he sang

1151
00:58:24.280 --> 00:58:25.559
the song to his grandchild?

1152
00:58:25.639 --> 00:58:27.719
There was nothing in the book about that. I don't

1153
00:58:27.760 --> 00:58:29.239
know how you how, I don't know how you would

1154
00:58:29.239 --> 00:58:33.840
explain that. Really. The custody battle is another frustrating part

1155
00:58:34.000 --> 00:58:37.920
of this case. They ended up giving primary custody of

1156
00:58:37.960 --> 00:58:40.440
Shane to Judy and Lloyd, and I think part of

1157
00:58:40.440 --> 00:58:43.719
the reasoning was because his brother Kristin, you know, had

1158
00:58:44.159 --> 00:58:44.559
was there.

1159
00:58:44.960 --> 00:58:47.079
I was thinking about that. It's a tough one to

1160
00:58:47.119 --> 00:58:50.599
break up the Suns would be really hard. Yeah, it's

1161
00:58:50.599 --> 00:58:53.800
a tragic situation because those people really don't seem like

1162
00:58:54.199 --> 00:58:55.440
they should be parenting.

1163
00:58:55.679 --> 00:58:55.840
You know.

1164
00:58:56.119 --> 00:58:59.280
Well, now the kids are adults essentially, right.

1165
00:58:59.280 --> 00:59:01.159
Yeah, And I was able to find out kind of

1166
00:59:01.159 --> 00:59:04.119
what has happened to them, you know, hopefully they're doing well.

1167
00:59:04.159 --> 00:59:07.880
It does sound like, you know, Leslie had them for

1168
00:59:07.920 --> 00:59:08.679
the summers in.

1169
00:59:08.719 --> 00:59:11.519
Maine, so well he had both of them, or he

1170
00:59:11.679 --> 00:59:14.039
just had you know, it's a good question had Shane.

1171
00:59:14.079 --> 00:59:16.440
Probably just had Shane. But I wouldn't be surprised if

1172
00:59:16.559 --> 00:59:18.079
you know, Tristan had maybe come with.

1173
00:59:18.400 --> 00:59:20.199
But I don't think that they would have allowed that.

1174
00:59:20.400 --> 00:59:22.719
Yeah, I don't know, hard to say, but either way,

1175
00:59:22.760 --> 00:59:25.800
it's it's it's tragic obviously when the kids are involved,

1176
00:59:25.840 --> 00:59:28.280
and I don't think there's any good answer. I almost

1177
00:59:28.280 --> 00:59:30.960
feel in some ways that Wendy does not believe she

1178
00:59:31.039 --> 00:59:34.280
did anything wrong. And I don't know if i'm she

1179
00:59:34.400 --> 00:59:38.199
just seems so delusional to me, her her delusion seems real,

1180
00:59:38.440 --> 00:59:40.800
like she just seems like she doesn't get it.

1181
00:59:41.280 --> 00:59:44.239
Yeah, I mean she's not exactly based in reality.

1182
00:59:43.880 --> 00:59:46.119
Is Yeah, that's kind of how it feels. And I

1183
00:59:46.159 --> 00:59:48.599
just wonder if she'll ever if she ever admits to

1184
00:59:48.639 --> 00:59:51.239
herself that she did something really, really bad.

1185
00:59:51.400 --> 00:59:53.840
I think my question for you is, what was her motive?

1186
00:59:55.000 --> 00:59:57.559
I do that is a really good I'm glad you

1187
00:59:57.599 --> 01:00:00.239
brought that up because it is a great question. I

1188
01:00:00.239 --> 01:00:03.159
have no idea. I mean, they were married for four

1189
01:00:03.199 --> 01:00:07.079
months ish, they hardly knew each other, so yeah, it

1190
01:00:07.239 --> 01:00:10.440
just doesn't make any sense. And I wonder how much

1191
01:00:10.519 --> 01:00:13.639
influence her. You know, her mom would constantly say bad

1192
01:00:13.679 --> 01:00:16.599
things to her about Mike and would trash talk Mike

1193
01:00:16.639 --> 01:00:18.840
to her. I just wonder if there was if that

1194
01:00:18.960 --> 01:00:22.280
influenced her decision to kill him, but there's there's no

1195
01:00:22.800 --> 01:00:24.440
motive that makes sense in this case.

1196
01:00:24.880 --> 01:00:27.199
Did she have any history of abuse with any of

1197
01:00:27.239 --> 01:00:28.800
her prior relationships?

1198
01:00:28.800 --> 01:00:30.079
Do you know? Not that I read about.

1199
01:00:30.119 --> 01:00:32.800
Now, I was sure that Judy was involved.

1200
01:00:33.119 --> 01:00:35.679
Yeah, it definitely seemed that way through a lot of it.

1201
01:00:35.800 --> 01:00:38.480
Maybe I intentionally misled you a little bit too, Oh

1202
01:00:38.519 --> 01:00:41.239
dare you? I know? But she hated him, there's no

1203
01:00:41.280 --> 01:00:44.159
doubt that she hated him, but it doesn't seem like

1204
01:00:44.239 --> 01:00:45.400
she was involved.

1205
01:00:45.519 --> 01:00:48.440
Well, that's a tragic story. And my heart is always

1206
01:00:48.440 --> 01:00:52.480
with the children. And gosh, I hope they survived all

1207
01:00:52.559 --> 01:00:54.519
of the dysfunction. I hope they're doing well.

1208
01:00:54.599 --> 01:01:04.400
Yeah. Same. In my research for this case, there was

1209
01:01:04.440 --> 01:01:07.519
a lot about veterinarians, and I found a veterinarian.

1210
01:01:07.639 --> 01:01:10.679
Veterinarians veterinary practice is the word.

1211
01:01:10.480 --> 01:01:12.519
That you've tried to avoid reading every time it was

1212
01:01:12.519 --> 01:01:13.079
in the script.

1213
01:01:13.199 --> 01:01:16.320
Well, I in my defense, you have like people are like,

1214
01:01:16.400 --> 01:01:19.320
this is how you say this word, but sometimes it's

1215
01:01:19.360 --> 01:01:22.199
just hard to say it in a certain sentence. It is,

1216
01:01:22.440 --> 01:01:24.960
and when we're reading the scripts, we don't read them before.

1217
01:01:24.960 --> 01:01:27.840
I mean, you compose yours. I don't read them beforehand

1218
01:01:27.840 --> 01:01:31.519
and vice versa. So it is harder than you think

1219
01:01:31.679 --> 01:01:33.400
to read the script.

1220
01:01:33.519 --> 01:01:35.119
I know, totally totally tricky.

1221
01:01:34.960 --> 01:01:37.679
Especially like today, what was the one not just you know,

1222
01:01:38.360 --> 01:01:42.079
but the other you for youth and Asia D youth

1223
01:01:42.119 --> 01:01:45.239
and asia D. Yeah, like I hadn't seen that word before,

1224
01:01:45.280 --> 01:01:47.440
and I was like, all right, we're gonna try to

1225
01:01:47.480 --> 01:01:49.880
work this out. We do our best, and it's okay

1226
01:01:49.880 --> 01:01:51.280
if you point out when we screw up.

1227
01:01:51.360 --> 01:01:54.920
But anyway, I wanted to share it. Sorry you, digress.

1228
01:01:55.039 --> 01:01:58.400
I wanted to share one random fact about veterinarians that

1229
01:01:58.480 --> 01:02:01.599
I found that was interesting. The hardest animal to annest,

1230
01:02:01.639 --> 01:02:04.400
the size, the speaking of words. They're hard to say.

1231
01:02:04.400 --> 01:02:05.400
I can't say it's a tough one.

1232
01:02:05.880 --> 01:02:10.400
The size and nailed it. You did? Okay, what do

1233
01:02:10.440 --> 01:02:14.199
you think that?

1234
01:02:15.599 --> 01:02:18.400
What do you think is the hardest animal to the

1235
01:02:18.559 --> 01:02:20.119
ties to.

1236
01:02:20.000 --> 01:02:22.000
Put to sleep? I would guess a.

1237
01:02:21.960 --> 01:02:25.840
Cow a gress. I guess you don't have to do

1238
01:02:25.880 --> 01:02:28.440
that very often as a veterinarian. But I think it's

1239
01:02:28.440 --> 01:02:32.599
really hard to figure out the right dosage of an anesthetic.

1240
01:02:32.880 --> 01:02:35.119
Where do you where do you dose it?

1241
01:02:35.400 --> 01:02:37.559
I have no idea idea.

1242
01:02:38.000 --> 01:02:40.440
The body probably not in the head.

1243
01:02:40.639 --> 01:02:41.920
I didn't do that much research.

1244
01:02:42.000 --> 01:02:44.760
Drafts are fascinating really if you think about like all

1245
01:02:44.800 --> 01:02:49.239
the vertebrae and remember the one giraffe that had like

1246
01:02:49.320 --> 01:02:50.159
the crooked neck.

1247
01:02:50.360 --> 01:02:53.440
And I can't remember, like.

1248
01:02:53.599 --> 01:02:55.599
We went to see it. It was many years ago,

1249
01:02:55.840 --> 01:02:58.320
like our kids were may have actually only been Emma,

1250
01:02:58.360 --> 01:03:00.400
but really young, and we went to the zoo and

1251
01:03:00.440 --> 01:03:03.079
you had seen it years ago, so maybe it was

1252
01:03:03.079 --> 01:03:04.400
was it Santa Barbara, might.

1253
01:03:04.239 --> 01:03:06.960
Have been San Diego, Okay, but yeah, the draft had

1254
01:03:07.000 --> 01:03:09.199
like a neck was like had like a kink in it,

1255
01:03:09.320 --> 01:03:11.760
that sort of thing. It was very strange. But enough

1256
01:03:11.800 --> 01:03:13.400
about veterinarians and animals.

1257
01:03:13.480 --> 01:03:15.920
I wanted to mention one thing before we go. We actually,

1258
01:03:15.920 --> 01:03:17.559
I think you have a couple more things to talk about.

1259
01:03:17.599 --> 01:03:19.400
I just wanted to say thank you to our military

1260
01:03:19.400 --> 01:03:22.639
families in these uncertain times. You know, we have a

1261
01:03:22.639 --> 01:03:25.360
lot of military people that listen to us, and there's

1262
01:03:25.360 --> 01:03:27.800
a lot going on in the world, and I know

1263
01:03:27.840 --> 01:03:30.559
that people are being called to different places to serve,

1264
01:03:30.719 --> 01:03:33.280
and I just want to say you have our utmost

1265
01:03:33.320 --> 01:03:36.679
appreciations in respect and gratitude.

1266
01:03:36.800 --> 01:03:39.360
Well, before we go, should we tell everyone about Project

1267
01:03:39.400 --> 01:03:41.679
Tail Mary. Yeah, a lot of people have probably seen

1268
01:03:41.719 --> 01:03:43.880
it already because it's a pretty big hit, but we

1269
01:03:43.920 --> 01:03:46.039
went and saw it last weekend, and yeah, it was

1270
01:03:46.079 --> 01:03:47.519
really I really liked a lot.

1271
01:03:47.679 --> 01:03:50.159
I think there's a lot of like with the Artemis mission,

1272
01:03:50.840 --> 01:03:54.000
people really just love seeing the images and those astronauts

1273
01:03:54.000 --> 01:03:56.119
were so full of joy. Yeah, that was to be

1274
01:03:56.119 --> 01:03:58.840
able to be on that mission. It was just really

1275
01:03:59.000 --> 01:04:03.000
really moving. And we had seen Project Tail Mary, which

1276
01:04:03.199 --> 01:04:06.320
I was surprised by how much I liked it. It's great.

1277
01:04:06.360 --> 01:04:09.239
It's almost like an adult Disney film, which might sound

1278
01:04:09.840 --> 01:04:12.400
like just some people like, oh, that sounds like I

1279
01:04:12.400 --> 01:04:13.800
would not want to see that, But it was just

1280
01:04:14.239 --> 01:04:17.039
heartwarming and touching and I feel like you could take

1281
01:04:17.199 --> 01:04:18.639
your twelve year old to see it.

1282
01:04:18.840 --> 01:04:21.360
Yeah, definitely. I had read the book before, and really

1283
01:04:21.360 --> 01:04:23.199
I liked the book a lot, and I wasn't sure

1284
01:04:23.239 --> 01:04:24.920
how they were going to be able to make it

1285
01:04:24.960 --> 01:04:27.119
into a movie that was really well done. But I

1286
01:04:27.159 --> 01:04:29.159
thought it was great. It was just like you said,

1287
01:04:29.159 --> 01:04:31.920
it was heartwarming. It was a feel good movie. It

1288
01:04:31.960 --> 01:04:33.599
was interesting too, and.

1289
01:04:33.639 --> 01:04:37.239
Yeah, I thought there was some suspense and Ryan Gosling

1290
01:04:37.400 --> 01:04:40.599
was and he was pretty darn adorable in that movie. Yeah,

1291
01:04:40.800 --> 01:04:42.119
do you have a boy crush on?

1292
01:04:42.559 --> 01:04:44.599
No, I wouldn't say I'm a boy crush so I

1293
01:04:44.599 --> 01:04:45.480
could appreciate him.

1294
01:04:45.480 --> 01:04:47.920
If you had to pick one man that you have

1295
01:04:48.000 --> 01:04:52.000
a boy man crush on, who would it be? He

1296
01:04:52.519 --> 01:04:54.079
is standing right behind you, by.

1297
01:04:53.920 --> 01:04:58.119
The way, it wouldn't be Keith Morris. I don't know.

1298
01:04:58.920 --> 01:04:59.280
I don't know.

1299
01:04:59.360 --> 01:05:05.119
I like, you're so n he's so uncomfortable right now.

1300
01:05:06.239 --> 01:05:06.719
It's okay.

1301
01:05:06.760 --> 01:05:08.320
I appreciate Ryan Gosling.

1302
01:05:08.400 --> 01:05:10.840
He you would pick him, you'd be up there. I

1303
01:05:10.840 --> 01:05:14.880
guess I pick picture with more with like, I don't

1304
01:05:14.960 --> 01:05:20.719
know someone that's more you like those Narcos type shows, like.

1305
01:05:19.800 --> 01:05:23.239
Like Pedro Pascal is that his name?

1306
01:05:23.639 --> 01:05:25.760
Uh? Yeah, Yeah, I think I.

1307
01:05:25.760 --> 01:05:28.400
Could have a boy crush on him. Sure, okay, all right, Well,

1308
01:05:28.440 --> 01:05:31.400
