Orbit of Obsession: The Downfall of Astronaut Lisa Nowak

Note: This article contains spoilers. Listen to the Love Marry Kill episode on Lisa Nowak here.

In February 2007, news headlines around the globe were suddenly gripped by a story that seemed stranger than fiction. A decorated United States Navy captain, naval flight officer, test pilot, and mother of three had traveled over five million miles in space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. She was an American hero who had broken barriers in a fiercely competitive, male-dominated arena. Yet, just seven months after her triumphant spaceflight, 43-year-old Lisa Nowak was standing in handcuffs at the Orlando International Airport, drenched in rain and facing charges of stalking, battery, and attempted kidnapping.

The shocking unraveling began when Nowak embarked on an obsessive, non-stop 950-mile trek from Houston to Orlando, armed with a disguise, weapons, and MapQuest printouts to confront Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman. Shipman was the new love interest of fellow astronaut William "Bill" Oefelein—with whom Lisa had shared an intense, clandestine affair. Pushed to the brink by marital collapse, the lingering trauma of losing close friends aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia, severe sleep deprivation, and the abrupt emotional void that often follows the pinnacle of an astronaut’s career, Nowak launched herself into a dark, self-destructive personal mission.

The Evidence Locker

  • The Airport Encounter Dufee Bag: When Orlando police intercepted Lisa shortly after the attack, her duffle bag held a new steel sledgehammer/mallet, a folding buck knife, a loaded BB pistol with extra CO2 cartridges, clear plastic tubing, and the dark sunglasses and trench coat she had worn while shadowing Colleen.

  • Digital Files and Private Correspondence: Investigators found two USB flash drives and a floppy disk, along with printed personal email exchanges between Bill Oefelein and Colleen Shipman that Lisa had secretly downloaded from Bill’s computer.

  • Stalking Blueprint & Directions: Inside Lisa’s car, detectives discovered 67 pages of MapQuest directions from Houston to Orlando International Airport, local area street maps, and handwritten notes containing Colleen's flight itinerary, home address, and exact GPS coordinates.

  • Cash Trails and Aliases: Seeking to avoid leaving a digital trail, Lisa intentionally left her personal cell phone behind in Houston, paid cash at toll plazas and gas stations, and registered at a Days Inn in the Florida Panhandle under the fake name "Linda Turner."

  • The "Diaper" Myth vs. Reality: While tabloid lore cemented the idea that Nowak wore astronaut Maximum Absorbency Garments (MAGs) to make non-stop time, investigators actually discovered children’s diapers in a trash bag in the vehicle—items Lisa stated had been left in the car since her family evacuated during Hurricane Rita in 2005.

Tina & Rich's Takeaways

"I feel a little defensive for Lisa, even though what she did was wrong. But if she really just wanted to talk, why not approach Colleen at the luggage carousel or at Starbucks? Waiting until 3:00 a.m. in a dark parking lot with a disguise and weapons makes no sense. At the same time, should any of us really be judged by our worst moment?"

— Tina

"The contradiction in her planning baffles me. She was a test pilot used to complex checklists and had every mile mapped out, but when it came to the actual confrontation, there was no logical plan. What was she going to do? Sadly, we don’t get to choose what we’re remembered for, and that parking lot will always overshadow her accomplishments."

— Rich

What Do You Think?

  • The Intent: Did Lisa genuinely drive 900 miles just to talk, or did the weapons in her bag point to something far darker?

  • The Charges: Was charging her with attempted murder an overreaction by police and prosecutors?

  • Mixed Signals: Should Bill have been much more upfront and direct with Lisa about cutting ties?

  • Legacy: Can—or should—someone’s lifelong achievements be defined by their worst single moment?
