Kristil and Dan Krug

In 2023, when Kristil Krug began receiving harassing messages from an apparent stalker, her world was turned upside down. As the messages became more threatening and personal, she went to police for help, but tracking down her stalker proved challenging. On December 14 Kristil’s husband, Dan, contacted police to perform a welfare check at their home when he couldn’t reach her. Kristil’s worst fears had come true, but the person who had been terrorizing her was much closer to home than anyone realized.

In 2023, when Christelle Crude began receiving harassing messages from

2
00:00:04.570 --> 00:00:08.210
an apparent stalker, her world was turned upside down. As

3
00:00:08.269 --> 00:00:11.250
the messages became more threatening and personal, she went to

4
00:00:11.289 --> 00:00:14.849
police for help, but tracking down her stalker proved challenging.

5
00:00:15.289 --> 00:00:19.559
On December 14th, Christelle's husband, Dan, contacted police to perform

6
00:00:19.600 --> 00:00:22.079
a welfare check at their home when he couldn't reach her.

7
00:00:22.579 --> 00:00:25.839
Christille's worst fears had come true, but the person who

8
00:00:25.879 --> 00:00:29.019
had been terrorizing her was much closer to home than

9
00:00:29.179 --> 00:00:30.179
anyone realized.

10
00:00:30.760 --> 00:00:31.239
I'm Rich.

11
00:00:31.460 --> 00:00:32.079
And I'm Tina.

12
00:00:32.479 --> 00:00:34.399
Welcome to Love, Marry, Kill.

13
00:00:34.420 --> 00:00:40.060
Love, Marry, Kill.

14
00:00:49.920 --> 00:00:50.960
Hey, Rich. Hey, Tina.

15
00:00:51.060 --> 00:00:51.539
How are you?

16
00:00:51.740 --> 00:00:52.729
I am doing good. How are you?

17
00:00:52.740 --> 00:00:55.329
I am great. It is beautiful today.

18
00:00:55.429 --> 00:00:56.009
Oh, it really is.

19
00:00:56.009 --> 00:00:58.149
The windows are open. You actually have a sweatshirt on

20
00:00:58.210 --> 00:00:59.049
because it's a little chilly.

21
00:00:59.079 --> 00:01:00.060
It's almost chilly, yeah.

22
00:01:00.619 --> 00:01:02.759
This time of year, I always have to say to you,

23
00:01:02.880 --> 00:01:06.000
I'm so sorry what I said during the summer when

24
00:01:06.019 --> 00:01:08.060
the heat and humidity were high.

25
00:01:08.140 --> 00:01:10.140
You are not a big fan of the heat and humidity.

26
00:01:10.219 --> 00:01:12.000
No, and I'm not my best self in the summer,

27
00:01:12.019 --> 00:01:14.379
for sure. A day like today, though, you can still

28
00:01:14.400 --> 00:01:16.140
wear shorts and there's a little bit of a breeze.

29
00:01:16.420 --> 00:01:19.680
It's perfect. We hope wherever you are, you are having

30
00:01:19.819 --> 00:01:24.590
a beautiful, wonderful day, too. Yesterday was our anniversary. Yes.

31
00:01:24.849 --> 00:01:28.769
And we went out for dinner to celebrate. And you

32
00:01:28.810 --> 00:01:32.109
chose to renew our marriage for another, you said, seven

33
00:01:32.150 --> 00:01:33.489
years at dinner. Is that what you said?

34
00:01:33.609 --> 00:01:34.969
I signed up for another seven years.

35
00:01:35.049 --> 00:01:35.390
So, yeah.

36
00:01:35.409 --> 00:01:37.750
I'm kind of surprised. Was it because of the pressure

37
00:01:37.790 --> 00:01:39.769
of doing the podcast? You're like, oh, if we don't

38
00:01:39.989 --> 00:01:42.790
renew our marriage, then we're going to have to end

39
00:01:42.810 --> 00:01:44.709
the podcast. Or we could just do a different podcast.

40
00:01:44.730 --> 00:01:46.750
There were a lot of factors in my decision. I

41
00:01:46.829 --> 00:01:50.670
took everything into account, including the podcast. And I said,

42
00:01:50.719 --> 00:01:52.879
you know what? I think it's going pretty well. I'm

43
00:01:52.890 --> 00:01:54.239
going to go for another seven years.

44
00:01:54.700 --> 00:01:56.840
Yeah. And I signed up for the scene.

45
00:01:56.879 --> 00:01:58.480
And you agreed. So that's great.

46
00:01:58.909 --> 00:02:00.620
We went back to the restaurant where we had our

47
00:02:00.670 --> 00:02:03.170
rehearsal dinner. And I was like, I'm not going to

48
00:02:03.209 --> 00:02:05.269
tell anyone. But then I ended up telling the hostess,

49
00:02:05.370 --> 00:02:09.770
expecting she would be like, wow, that's fabulous. Welcome back.

50
00:02:09.810 --> 00:02:12.710
We're so excited to have you. And the manager was

51
00:02:12.729 --> 00:02:14.889
going to come out with some like dessert, you know,

52
00:02:15.009 --> 00:02:15.389
on the house.

53
00:02:15.409 --> 00:02:16.870
I thought it would be like the bear. They would

54
00:02:16.909 --> 00:02:20.800
come and do some special thing and, you know. But yeah,

55
00:02:20.960 --> 00:02:22.000
not so much.

56
00:02:22.120 --> 00:02:24.560
No, they really didn't care. That's okay. Because anniversaries are

57
00:02:24.580 --> 00:02:27.599
really just meant for you and your significant other to celebrate.

58
00:02:27.719 --> 00:02:29.530
And all of our listeners.

59
00:02:29.590 --> 00:02:31.909
I know. A lot of you did say happy anniversary.

60
00:02:31.990 --> 00:02:34.789
So thank you so much for those well wishes. I

61
00:02:34.870 --> 00:02:37.409
did make you a special snack. Something that I know

62
00:02:37.439 --> 00:02:39.400
you'll love. And I've made this before for the podcast.

63
00:02:40.020 --> 00:02:41.819
We try not to repeat, but I know this is

64
00:02:41.900 --> 00:02:42.659
one of your favorites.

65
00:02:42.699 --> 00:02:44.039
We've been doing it for a long time now. It's

66
00:02:44.090 --> 00:02:44.930
hard not to repeat.

67
00:02:44.949 --> 00:02:46.870
Not really. I mean, there's a lot of snacks in

68
00:02:46.909 --> 00:02:49.469
the world. But wait, I'm going to hand it to you.

69
00:02:49.569 --> 00:02:49.830
Okay.

70
00:02:50.009 --> 00:02:51.949
And you can unwrap it. Okay.

71
00:02:52.469 --> 00:02:56.909
This looks like, oh, this is very exciting.

72
00:02:56.960 --> 00:02:57.240
Yeah.

73
00:02:57.520 --> 00:02:59.240
These are, I'm not sure what they're called, but they're

74
00:02:59.259 --> 00:03:01.360
like peanut butter cookies. Peanut butter sandwich cookies. Yeah, with

75
00:03:01.500 --> 00:03:02.479
filling in between them.

76
00:03:02.500 --> 00:03:05.080
And I tried to make the cookies a little smaller,

77
00:03:05.099 --> 00:03:07.319
but no, this is a big, this is a bunch.

78
00:03:07.500 --> 00:03:08.280
This is my lunch.

79
00:03:08.439 --> 00:03:08.990
Yeah.

80
00:03:09.219 --> 00:03:09.560
Excellent.

81
00:03:09.860 --> 00:03:17.889
We'll be right back. What did you think of the

82
00:03:17.930 --> 00:03:19.189
peanut butter sandwich cookie?

83
00:03:19.310 --> 00:03:21.610
Oh my gosh, those are, I forgot how amazing those are.

84
00:03:21.650 --> 00:03:22.939
They're so, so good.

85
00:03:22.960 --> 00:03:25.360
They're so good. I just realized we've had peanut butter

86
00:03:26.199 --> 00:03:28.699
the last two episodes. Now we had Carla's peanut butter

87
00:03:28.759 --> 00:03:31.860
last episode and now we have these. Yeah, they're so good.

88
00:03:32.080 --> 00:03:33.080
They are excellent.

89
00:03:33.520 --> 00:03:35.750
The recipe is in our show notes, number one at

90
00:03:35.810 --> 00:03:38.090
show notes, if you want to give that recipe a try.

91
00:03:38.909 --> 00:03:41.009
I have been itching to talk to you about this

92
00:03:41.069 --> 00:03:43.770
case since I started it a couple of weeks ago.

93
00:03:43.789 --> 00:03:48.060
I have gotten so irrationally mad at Dan Krug.

94
00:03:48.189 --> 00:03:48.800
It's ridiculous.

95
00:03:48.840 --> 00:03:51.860
I had to get up and walk away because this

96
00:03:51.919 --> 00:03:53.280
case just enrages me.

97
00:03:53.319 --> 00:03:53.719
Oh, boy.

98
00:03:54.099 --> 00:03:57.419
Thanks to Elias and Chelsea for recommending this case. And

99
00:03:57.460 --> 00:03:59.909
I do need to give a content warning. Today's episode

100
00:03:59.939 --> 00:04:06.689
includes sexually explicit comments and strong language. On December 14, 2023,

101
00:04:06.689 --> 00:04:11.180
at 12.02 p.m., Daniel Krug called the Broomfield Police Department's

102
00:04:11.520 --> 00:04:15.979
non-emergency line from his office in Glendale, Colorado, about 40

103
00:04:15.979 --> 00:04:19.040
minutes from his home in Broomfield. Here's a brief clip

104
00:04:19.079 --> 00:04:19.600
of the call.

105
00:04:21.639 --> 00:04:24.870
I don't think this is an emergency, but this feels

106
00:04:24.930 --> 00:04:31.639
really weird. My wife isn't responding well. to phone calls.

107
00:04:31.939 --> 00:04:34.709
We've had threats against us. Can I get maybe a

108
00:04:34.769 --> 00:04:35.949
wellness check at the house?

109
00:04:36.410 --> 00:04:37.230
What's your wife's name?

110
00:04:37.569 --> 00:04:44.970
Chris Steele. K-R-I-S-T-I-L. We have both been targeted by a stalker.

111
00:04:45.430 --> 00:04:49.060
Threats have been made against my life and threatening to

112
00:04:49.199 --> 00:04:52.680
kidnap her, which is why I'm nervous that she's not

113
00:04:52.860 --> 00:04:53.399
answering me.

114
00:04:54.279 --> 00:04:56.899
Dan and his wife Chris Steele were both 43 and

115
00:04:56.939 --> 00:04:59.430
had been married for 16 years. They lived with their

116
00:04:59.470 --> 00:05:03.310
three children, two girls and a boy, ages 14, 11,

117
00:05:03.310 --> 00:05:07.040
and 8, in a comfortable home in a quiet Broomfield neighborhood.

118
00:05:07.639 --> 00:05:11.000
On Halloween, about six weeks earlier, Christille had gone to

119
00:05:11.040 --> 00:05:14.660
the police to report harassment from an apparent stalker that

120
00:05:14.699 --> 00:05:18.529
had started on October 2nd. On Halloween, the stalker had

121
00:05:18.610 --> 00:05:21.389
raised the stakes by sending her a photograph of Dan

122
00:05:21.730 --> 00:05:25.610
outside his office, along with a disturbing message referencing a

123
00:05:25.709 --> 00:05:30.120
clear plastic hose Christille had previously found attached to her tailpipe.

124
00:05:30.680 --> 00:05:34.160
Until that day, the messages hadn't been too frightening or obscene,

125
00:05:34.540 --> 00:05:37.100
but now it appeared that whoever was sending them was

126
00:05:37.220 --> 00:05:41.670
closely following her family. The case was assigned to Detective

127
00:05:41.889 --> 00:05:45.790
Andrew Martinez, and on November 7th, Christille returned to the

128
00:05:45.829 --> 00:05:49.029
police department for a lengthy interview with him. She came

129
00:05:49.069 --> 00:05:52.600
prepared with a detailed timeline and a spreadsheet documenting the

130
00:05:52.629 --> 00:05:56.639
harassment she'd been experiencing. She had recorded the dates and

131
00:05:56.660 --> 00:05:59.660
times of the contacts, what was said, and where she

132
00:05:59.720 --> 00:06:02.680
was when they happened, and any other details that might

133
00:06:02.720 --> 00:06:06.720
help police identify the person behind them. When Detective Martinez

134
00:06:06.839 --> 00:06:09.339
asked if she had any idea who her stalker might be,

135
00:06:09.759 --> 00:06:15.259
Christille answered without hesitation, Anthony Holland. Christille had met Anthony

136
00:06:15.339 --> 00:06:18.660
years earlier when they worked together at JCPenney, and the

137
00:06:18.699 --> 00:06:22.660
two eventually began dating. Christille ended the relationship, and by

138
00:06:22.740 --> 00:06:26.220
all accounts, the breakup was amicable. They went their separate ways,

139
00:06:26.459 --> 00:06:31.100
although Anthony occasionally reached out to Christille over the years. Now,

140
00:06:31.180 --> 00:06:34.759
more than two decades later, Anthony was sending Christille obscene

141
00:06:34.800 --> 00:06:38.439
and increasingly threatening messages. It didn't make sense to her.

142
00:06:39.399 --> 00:06:42.560
Christille told Detective Martinez that the harassment had left her

143
00:06:42.670 --> 00:06:46.569
frightened and constantly on guard. She understood that whoever was

144
00:06:46.629 --> 00:06:49.910
doing this wanted to scare her, but knowing that didn't

145
00:06:49.949 --> 00:06:52.910
make it any easier to live with. The messages followed

146
00:06:52.949 --> 00:06:56.649
her everywhere. Whoever was sending them seemed to know where

147
00:06:56.709 --> 00:07:00.420
she was, where Dan worked, and intimate details about their lives.

148
00:07:01.259 --> 00:07:03.860
Dan was involved in the investigation as well. From the

149
00:07:03.879 --> 00:07:06.620
perspective of the police, Christille and Dan were a married

150
00:07:06.660 --> 00:07:09.740
couple trying to figure out who was terrorizing their family.

151
00:07:10.300 --> 00:07:14.730
Detective Martinez began investigating Anthony while Christille continued saving the

152
00:07:14.750 --> 00:07:20.129
messages and documenting every contact. Now, on December 14th, Christille

153
00:07:20.209 --> 00:07:23.860
suddenly wasn't answering her phone, causing her husband to fear

154
00:07:23.939 --> 00:07:24.500
the worst.

155
00:07:25.220 --> 00:07:28.519
It's really terrifying thinking of someone sending you not only

156
00:07:28.560 --> 00:07:32.519
harassing messages, but including like photos that show that they're

157
00:07:32.540 --> 00:07:34.519
watching you or your husband.

158
00:07:34.980 --> 00:07:38.709
It's chilling to think about. Christille Grimsrud was born in

159
00:07:38.769 --> 00:07:43.370
November 1980 in Colorado to Lars and Linda. Her unique

160
00:07:43.410 --> 00:07:46.680
name was a nod to her father's Norwegian roots. Lars

161
00:07:46.709 --> 00:07:48.899
said that she was one of a kind and didn't

162
00:07:48.939 --> 00:07:52.220
need a middle name. Lars had emigrated from Norway to

163
00:07:52.259 --> 00:07:56.079
Colorado in the 1970s for a job in aerospace engineering.

164
00:07:56.720 --> 00:07:59.920
Outside of work, he loved tinkering in his garage, fixing

165
00:07:59.980 --> 00:08:03.410
things and working on old cars. Linda worked in IT

166
00:08:03.529 --> 00:08:06.490
and was a kind, warm woman devoted to her family.

167
00:08:07.279 --> 00:08:10.040
Although their marriage only lasted long enough to produce their

168
00:08:10.079 --> 00:08:13.850
two children, Christille and her brother Lars Jr., Linda and

169
00:08:13.879 --> 00:08:17.850
Lars remained on good terms and successfully co-parented their children

170
00:08:17.930 --> 00:08:20.949
over the years. Growing up, Christille was a girl of

171
00:08:21.050 --> 00:08:25.350
many interests and passions. She loved dance, both ballet and modern.

172
00:08:25.730 --> 00:08:28.670
She was equally drawn to math and science, a STEM

173
00:08:28.730 --> 00:08:32.169
girl long before the term existed. She also loved spending

174
00:08:32.210 --> 00:08:34.649
time with her father in the garage, helping Lars work

175
00:08:34.690 --> 00:08:37.090
on his old cars and learning how to rebuild engines.

176
00:08:37.629 --> 00:08:39.970
She was just as comfortable getting her hands dirty with

177
00:08:40.009 --> 00:08:42.590
her dad as she was putting on her ballet shoes.

178
00:08:43.210 --> 00:08:46.669
She graduated from high school in 1999 as valedictorian of

179
00:08:46.710 --> 00:08:51.409
her class. Lars remarried in 1997, adding two step-siblings to

180
00:08:51.450 --> 00:08:55.250
the family. Everyone got along well and remained close, living

181
00:08:55.289 --> 00:08:58.950
within about 15 minutes of one another. Holidays, birthdays, and

182
00:08:59.009 --> 00:09:02.669
other celebrations were often spent together. The gatherings were filled

183
00:09:02.789 --> 00:09:07.490
with camaraderie, fun, and laughter. I watched several shows about

184
00:09:07.500 --> 00:09:11.769
the family, and Lars and Linda and Christille's siblings are

185
00:09:11.909 --> 00:09:16.250
wonderful people, so warm and loving, and they were amazing.

186
00:09:16.570 --> 00:09:19.690
And even though Linda and Lars had divorced, they still

187
00:09:19.730 --> 00:09:24.029
had a really good relationship. Christille met her future husband,

188
00:09:24.289 --> 00:09:27.889
Daniel Krug, online while they were both in college. At

189
00:09:27.909 --> 00:09:30.570
the time, Christille was busy with her studies, making a

190
00:09:30.590 --> 00:09:34.049
long-distance relationship a good fit. She could focus on school

191
00:09:34.110 --> 00:09:37.379
and see Dan on breaks. Bristille had received a full

192
00:09:37.440 --> 00:09:41.720
scholarship from the Colorado School of Mines, a prestigious engineering

193
00:09:41.759 --> 00:09:46.340
and applied science university in Golden. Originally founded in 1874

194
00:09:46.340 --> 00:09:49.559
to support the mining industry during the gold rush, it's

195
00:09:49.620 --> 00:09:53.389
now known as one of the nation's top schools for engineering, geology,

196
00:09:53.549 --> 00:09:58.429
and other STEM fields. Dan attended Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

197
00:09:58.970 --> 00:10:01.700
He was the youngest of five. a former Eagle Scout,

198
00:10:02.039 --> 00:10:06.659
and like Christille, highly intelligent and academically driven. Christille later

199
00:10:06.720 --> 00:10:09.879
transferred to the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she

200
00:10:09.940 --> 00:10:13.899
graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemical engineering.

201
00:10:14.519 --> 00:10:17.539
After Dan graduated, he moved back to Colorado, and the

202
00:10:17.590 --> 00:10:22.889
relationship became more serious. Christille was smitten with him, particularly

203
00:10:23.009 --> 00:10:27.590
with his intelligence. Linda, however, wasn't quite as taken with Dan.

204
00:10:27.970 --> 00:10:31.549
Something about him made her uneasy from the beginning. Lars

205
00:10:31.620 --> 00:10:34.120
called Dan arrogant and said he was a cross between

206
00:10:34.159 --> 00:10:37.799
a politician and a salesman. He could be quiet and

207
00:10:37.940 --> 00:10:40.860
awkward at family gatherings, but Linda and Lars kept their

208
00:10:40.879 --> 00:10:44.950
concerns to themselves. Christille was intelligent and independent, and they

209
00:10:45.019 --> 00:10:48.210
trusted her to choose her own partner. Christille and Dan

210
00:10:48.250 --> 00:10:53.110
moved into a townhome together in Superior, Colorado, marrying in

211
00:10:53.110 --> 00:10:55.990
2007 after seven years of dating. The wedding was held

212
00:10:56.070 --> 00:10:59.850
at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in downtown Denver. Linda said

213
00:10:59.870 --> 00:11:03.370
it was the best wedding ever. Christille danced the night away.

214
00:11:03.389 --> 00:11:05.669
So when they first started dating, you said they had

215
00:11:05.690 --> 00:11:08.450
a long-distance relationship. So he was in D.C. and she

216
00:11:08.470 --> 00:11:09.490
was in Colorado?

217
00:11:09.629 --> 00:11:10.129
Yeah.

218
00:11:10.389 --> 00:11:12.769
That's quite a long-distance relationship. Do you know how long

219
00:11:12.809 --> 00:11:15.450
that lasted before he transferred out to Colorado?

220
00:11:15.950 --> 00:11:17.629
I think it was a few years, but they were

221
00:11:17.769 --> 00:11:20.730
both so driven by their studies, I don't think they

222
00:11:20.769 --> 00:11:21.690
minded too much.

223
00:11:22.490 --> 00:11:25.850
Over the next several years, Christille and Dan had three children,

224
00:11:26.090 --> 00:11:27.289
two daughters and a son.

225
00:11:27.830 --> 00:11:31.259
The family has worked really hard to keep the children's privacy,

226
00:11:31.759 --> 00:11:33.779
so we're not going to talk about their names, and

227
00:11:33.799 --> 00:11:35.940
we're going to give as little information as we can

228
00:11:35.980 --> 00:11:36.360
about them.

229
00:11:36.919 --> 00:11:39.940
They bought their first home in 2013 in Broomfield, a

230
00:11:40.139 --> 00:11:43.580
growing suburban community nestled along the foothills of the Rocky

231
00:11:43.620 --> 00:11:48.409
Mountains between Denver and Boulder. Located about 17 miles northwest

232
00:11:48.470 --> 00:11:51.750
of Denver and 9 miles southeast of Boulder, it offers

233
00:11:51.909 --> 00:11:56.190
easy access to both cities while maintaining a quiet, small-town feel.

234
00:11:56.929 --> 00:12:01.340
Once a rural farming community, Broomfield experienced rapid suburban growth

235
00:12:01.440 --> 00:12:04.879
beginning in the 1950s and today has a population of

236
00:12:04.940 --> 00:12:10.039
nearly 80,000. Christille worked for Agilent Technologies, where she would

237
00:12:10.080 --> 00:12:13.539
spend the next 19 years. She rose through the ranks

238
00:12:13.620 --> 00:12:18.480
and eventually became a global project manager. overseeing environmental remediation

239
00:12:18.519 --> 00:12:22.980
projects involving the cleanup of contaminated sites. She was very

240
00:12:23.019 --> 00:12:25.700
good at her work. Dan worked for the state of

241
00:12:25.759 --> 00:12:29.350
Colorado at the Department of Public Health and Environment, where

242
00:12:29.370 --> 00:12:33.629
he held a senior program management position. His professional background

243
00:12:33.690 --> 00:12:37.669
was in budgeting and finance. He seemed to change jobs frequently,

244
00:12:37.690 --> 00:12:43.450
although his co-workers described him as helpful, friendly, solid, and reliable. Together,

245
00:12:43.509 --> 00:12:46.860
the Krugs were making a comfortable living. Over the years,

246
00:12:46.980 --> 00:12:50.299
Dan was heavily involved in his children's lives. He coached

247
00:12:50.370 --> 00:12:53.950
their sports teams and rarely missed an important event or activity.

248
00:12:54.590 --> 00:12:58.830
Christille's life, too, revolved around their three children. She especially

249
00:12:58.870 --> 00:13:03.200
loved being a dance mom, helping with costumes, volunteering backstage,

250
00:13:03.539 --> 00:13:06.500
and supporting her daughter's love of dance, a passion that

251
00:13:06.539 --> 00:13:10.480
they shared. Both Christille and Dan believed in exposing their

252
00:13:10.519 --> 00:13:13.870
children to different activities and hobbies and encouraging them to

253
00:13:13.899 --> 00:13:17.299
find interests of their own. From the outside, the Krugs

254
00:13:17.370 --> 00:13:20.710
appeared to function well as a team. They managed two

255
00:13:20.750 --> 00:13:26.750
demanding careers while raising three busy children, shuttling them to practices, performances, school,

256
00:13:26.889 --> 00:13:31.379
and activities. Their lives were full and carefully scheduled. Both

257
00:13:31.440 --> 00:13:35.259
parents were involved and engaged. But behind the scenes, things

258
00:13:35.320 --> 00:13:39.059
weren't quite as seamless as they appeared. Over time, Christille

259
00:13:39.100 --> 00:13:41.990
began confiding in her mother that she felt she was

260
00:13:42.039 --> 00:13:46.120
carrying the greater burden of the family responsibilities. Dan was

261
00:13:46.200 --> 00:13:49.480
often angry about something and could be difficult to be around.

262
00:13:50.080 --> 00:13:52.259
When he was in a foul mood, it affected the

263
00:13:52.299 --> 00:13:55.440
entire household, and he would sometimes lash out at Chris

264
00:13:55.460 --> 00:13:59.159
Steele or the children, causing constant tension in the family.

265
00:13:59.179 --> 00:14:03.429
Do you know if Dan's anger was about any specific thing,

266
00:14:03.490 --> 00:14:06.289
or was it just about a variety of different things

267
00:14:06.330 --> 00:14:07.190
that could set him off?

268
00:14:07.889 --> 00:14:10.610
I got the impression that Dan may have been insecure

269
00:14:10.669 --> 00:14:13.730
in his relationship and even at work. He was angry

270
00:14:13.789 --> 00:14:17.409
about a lot of things, and I think he was

271
00:14:17.629 --> 00:14:21.830
controlling with Christille and the children. Christille was a star.

272
00:14:21.909 --> 00:14:25.129
She was really successful in her career and his career

273
00:14:25.169 --> 00:14:27.450
was more middling. Okay. So I think he was just

274
00:14:27.490 --> 00:14:29.289
one of those guys. As he got older, he just

275
00:14:29.360 --> 00:14:31.250
became a little angrier with the world.

276
00:14:31.320 --> 00:14:31.750
Makes sense.

277
00:14:31.860 --> 00:14:34.559
And he wanted to control what he could control. But

278
00:14:34.620 --> 00:14:37.659
Christille was also very private about their life. So the

279
00:14:37.679 --> 00:14:40.539
fact that she started sharing that things aren't going so

280
00:14:40.919 --> 00:14:42.679
great in our marriage was.

281
00:14:42.840 --> 00:14:44.080
That's significant then. Exactly.

282
00:14:44.100 --> 00:14:44.500
Exactly.

283
00:14:45.340 --> 00:14:49.899
In 2023, the Krugs began sleeping in separate bedrooms. Initially,

284
00:14:49.940 --> 00:14:52.559
they told people it was because of Dan's snoring, but

285
00:14:52.700 --> 00:14:55.799
it was obvious that there were underlying tensions in the marriage.

286
00:14:56.440 --> 00:14:59.460
By the fall, Christille told Dan that she wanted a divorce,

287
00:14:59.600 --> 00:15:03.139
although she hadn't filed any paperwork. It wasn't a total

288
00:15:03.179 --> 00:15:06.580
surprise to friends and family. Christille had shared with her

289
00:15:06.639 --> 00:15:09.720
sister Jenna that things were rocky in her marriage, and

290
00:15:09.779 --> 00:15:13.110
she had confided to her parents that Dan was sometimes

291
00:15:13.230 --> 00:15:16.120
rough with the kids. She even had a photo of

292
00:15:16.179 --> 00:15:18.659
bruises on one of the children that she had saved.

293
00:15:19.179 --> 00:15:22.809
Christille planned to fight for full custody. Dan did not

294
00:15:22.870 --> 00:15:26.690
want the marriage to end. In late September 2023, there

295
00:15:26.750 --> 00:15:30.190
was an odd occurrence at the Krug residence. Dan came

296
00:15:30.230 --> 00:15:33.000
home to find the garage door open, which struck him

297
00:15:33.080 --> 00:15:36.500
as odd. They were normally meticulous about keeping it closed.

298
00:15:37.200 --> 00:15:39.779
As he pulled into the garage, he spotted a shadowy

299
00:15:39.860 --> 00:15:42.879
figure running out of the garage and jumping over the fence.

300
00:15:43.580 --> 00:15:46.720
Dan called the police to report the incident, although wasn't

301
00:15:46.759 --> 00:15:50.000
able to give a very good description of the intruder, saying,

302
00:15:50.259 --> 00:15:53.840
it all happened so fast. Nothing was stolen of value,

303
00:15:53.919 --> 00:15:56.539
but an extra house key they kept in a toolbox

304
00:15:56.679 --> 00:16:01.340
was missing. Days later, Christille found a clear plastic tube

305
00:16:01.440 --> 00:16:04.519
hanging from her trunk. The end was singed as if

306
00:16:04.620 --> 00:16:06.179
it had been in her exhaust pipe.

307
00:16:06.830 --> 00:16:08.759
When she first saw the tube... I don't think she

308
00:16:08.799 --> 00:16:11.120
thought it was a big deal. But as time passes,

309
00:16:11.200 --> 00:16:14.740
she starts putting the pieces together and realizes that someone

310
00:16:14.779 --> 00:16:15.740
has malintent.

311
00:16:16.340 --> 00:16:19.899
Although the incidents in September were odd, Christille and Dan

312
00:16:19.950 --> 00:16:23.149
had brushed them off. But when Christille received the first

313
00:16:23.230 --> 00:16:27.269
message on October 2nd, 2023, she began to wonder if

314
00:16:27.350 --> 00:16:32.149
the strange incidents might be connected. The message read, Hi Christille,

315
00:16:32.330 --> 00:16:34.730
it's Anthony. I hope it's okay I looked you up.

316
00:16:35.370 --> 00:16:37.370
I go to Boulder every few weeks and thought we

317
00:16:37.389 --> 00:16:41.009
could hook up. You game? Christille hadn't thought much about

318
00:16:41.080 --> 00:16:45.039
Jack Anthony Holland in years. It was a lackluster romance

319
00:16:45.139 --> 00:16:48.700
that had run its course, their lives headed in different directions.

320
00:16:49.340 --> 00:16:53.379
While Christille was laser-focused on her education and career, Anthony

321
00:16:53.460 --> 00:16:56.389
cared more about partying and had dropped out of school.

322
00:16:57.149 --> 00:17:00.090
Christille didn't answer the message, kept it to herself, and

323
00:17:00.110 --> 00:17:01.129
then blocked the number.

324
00:17:01.730 --> 00:17:04.430
We are going to read the messages as he sent them,

325
00:17:04.589 --> 00:17:06.130
and some of them are quite obscene.

326
00:17:06.839 --> 00:17:10.180
The next day, he texted again from a different number. Quote,

327
00:17:10.650 --> 00:17:13.029
Are you there? You should say yes when I offer

328
00:17:13.069 --> 00:17:16.890
pity fuck. Whatev, saw your pics. You got fat. Bet

329
00:17:16.910 --> 00:17:20.910
your loser husband won't fuck your fat cunt dumbass. Dumbass,

330
00:17:20.950 --> 00:17:25.119
you should kill yourself. Don't waste my time. Christille again

331
00:17:25.210 --> 00:17:28.720
didn't respond and blocked the number. The messages slowed for

332
00:17:28.759 --> 00:17:32.680
a while, but on Halloween, Christille received the following email message.

333
00:17:33.140 --> 00:17:35.970
along with a picture of Dan exiting his vehicle at

334
00:17:36.009 --> 00:17:39.670
his place of work. Worried that the threats were escalating

335
00:17:39.750 --> 00:17:41.970
and that Dan could be in danger, Christille went to

336
00:17:41.990 --> 00:17:44.309
the Broomfield Police Department that day and filed a report.

337
00:17:57.059 --> 00:18:00.539
The case was assigned to Detective Andrew Martinez, who scheduled

338
00:18:00.599 --> 00:18:04.119
a meeting with Christille and Dan for November 7th. On

339
00:18:04.160 --> 00:18:08.750
November 3rd, Christille received the following email message, quote, Your

340
00:18:08.789 --> 00:18:12.710
license plate expired. Gotta fix that. Husband's good. You and

341
00:18:12.730 --> 00:18:16.710
your husband down for Eiffel Tower? Christille's tags had expired

342
00:18:16.769 --> 00:18:17.750
at the end of October.

343
00:18:17.769 --> 00:18:20.930
He wasn't suggesting that they go to the Eiffel Tower.

344
00:18:21.009 --> 00:18:21.609
Oh, no.

345
00:18:21.950 --> 00:18:25.009
It's a sexual position, and you can Google it, because

346
00:18:25.069 --> 00:18:26.230
I am not going to tell you about it.

347
00:18:26.910 --> 00:18:31.170
Each day, she received new messages from a slightly altered username.

348
00:18:31.670 --> 00:18:34.630
She continued to block them, but her anxiety was growing.

349
00:18:35.250 --> 00:18:38.309
On November 4th, Christille received a photo of a shirtless

350
00:18:38.349 --> 00:18:41.589
man with the caption, Are you interested? I'll send more

351
00:18:41.690 --> 00:18:44.970
once I know this is the right number. She was confused.

352
00:18:45.130 --> 00:18:48.750
The message didn't seem to be from Anthony. Soon, more

353
00:18:48.789 --> 00:18:52.339
messages and pictures of male genitalia poured in from men

354
00:18:52.380 --> 00:18:55.509
seeking sex with her. Eventually, one of the men told

355
00:18:55.549 --> 00:18:57.650
her that he had found a personal ad with her

356
00:18:57.710 --> 00:19:00.869
phone number. Quote, My birthday is coming up and I

357
00:19:00.910 --> 00:19:06.190
want to celebrate big. Party planned for 1125 and 1126.

358
00:19:06.190 --> 00:19:09.009
Looking for a large number of well-endowed men to run

359
00:19:09.049 --> 00:19:12.470
a train on me. Will be in hotel. Might have

360
00:19:12.529 --> 00:19:18.059
before or after visits. I'm 40, divorced white female, dirty blonde, curvy,

361
00:19:18.160 --> 00:19:22.190
not fat, all races and ages welcome. The ad encouraged

362
00:19:22.250 --> 00:19:25.559
men to send pictures of their genitalia to Christille's phone.

363
00:19:26.200 --> 00:19:28.440
That's a really awful thing to do to someone.

364
00:19:28.819 --> 00:19:33.319
So horrible. It's confusing, too, because he wants to be

365
00:19:33.359 --> 00:19:36.559
with Christille, but then he's, you know, doing these weird

366
00:19:36.900 --> 00:19:37.980
things to her that are.

367
00:19:38.359 --> 00:19:41.119
Well, it's pretty clear that he wants to harass her

368
00:19:41.269 --> 00:19:44.170
and make her feel uncomfortable and threatened, so I think

369
00:19:44.190 --> 00:19:45.450
this was another way to.

370
00:19:45.390 --> 00:19:47.630
Do that, right? But she's not going to want to

371
00:19:47.849 --> 00:19:49.970
be with him after all this disgusting behavior.

372
00:19:50.400 --> 00:19:54.859
On November 9th, she got another message, quote, saw you

373
00:19:54.920 --> 00:19:58.119
at the dentist. I like clean teeth for my cock.

374
00:19:58.519 --> 00:20:00.920
You got so horny and slutty in my car, so

375
00:20:00.980 --> 00:20:04.910
I nutted on yours. See you soon. Attached was a

376
00:20:04.950 --> 00:20:08.390
picture of her car at her dentist's office. Christille called

377
00:20:08.410 --> 00:20:10.650
the police and asked them to come search her car

378
00:20:10.710 --> 00:20:15.089
for biological material. They didn't find anything, but also searched

379
00:20:15.130 --> 00:20:18.430
her car for a GPS tracker. I hope that's the

380
00:20:18.450 --> 00:20:21.089
end of these messages because that made me really uncomfortable

381
00:20:21.130 --> 00:20:21.529
to read.

382
00:20:21.549 --> 00:20:24.099
I'm sorry, but I'm so glad you got to read those.

383
00:20:24.400 --> 00:20:26.940
There are more messages, but they are not as explicit

384
00:20:27.000 --> 00:20:28.119
as some of those were.

385
00:20:28.680 --> 00:20:30.059
We'll be back after a break.

386
00:20:32.700 --> 00:20:40.349
Music When Christille met with Detective Andrew Martinez on November 7th,

387
00:20:40.440 --> 00:20:44.029
she acknowledged how strange the situation was. She hadn't seen

388
00:20:44.119 --> 00:20:47.130
Anthony in more than 20 years, although he had reached

389
00:20:47.210 --> 00:20:53.049
out to her several times, including in 2002, 2005, 2010,

390
00:20:53.049 --> 00:20:58.130
and again in 2016. After Christille deleted her Facebook account,

391
00:20:58.329 --> 00:21:01.309
she didn't hear from him again. The messages that Anthony

392
00:21:01.349 --> 00:21:04.079
was sending her were like, Hi, how are you? But,

393
00:21:05.160 --> 00:21:07.960
He did admit that sometimes he had been drinking and

394
00:21:08.079 --> 00:21:11.599
he would say things, not sexually explicit, but like.

395
00:21:11.619 --> 00:21:12.519
A little inappropriate?

396
00:21:12.660 --> 00:21:15.539
Yeah, like, maybe we should hook up or blah, blah, blah,

397
00:21:15.559 --> 00:21:20.200
things like... He really did care deeply about Christil. Detective

398
00:21:20.240 --> 00:21:23.700
Martinez was impressed by the detailed spreadsheet that Christil presented

399
00:21:23.759 --> 00:21:27.180
him with. It made his job easier. He told Christil

400
00:21:27.220 --> 00:21:30.269
that she was doing everything right. After their first trip

401
00:21:30.289 --> 00:21:33.349
to the police station, Dan reassured his wife. We'll get

402
00:21:33.369 --> 00:21:38.509
through this together, whatever it takes. As Detective Martinez investigated,

403
00:21:38.710 --> 00:21:42.230
he discovered that the messages were being sent through TextNow

404
00:21:42.289 --> 00:21:47.049
accounts and prepaid phones with no useful registration information. The

405
00:21:47.109 --> 00:21:51.490
sender continually switched numbers, making it difficult to establish a

406
00:21:51.539 --> 00:21:55.220
pattern or trace the messages back to one person. A

407
00:21:55.279 --> 00:21:59.660
few provided usable IP information, and those led to busy

408
00:21:59.759 --> 00:22:03.730
public locations, including a coffee shop in Denver. whoever was

409
00:22:03.789 --> 00:22:06.869
behind the messages appeared to be taking deliberate steps to

410
00:22:06.910 --> 00:22:12.329
conceal their identity. Martinez sent legal requests to the telecommunications

411
00:22:12.410 --> 00:22:16.579
and social media companies seeking more detailed subscriber and account

412
00:22:16.630 --> 00:22:20.740
information that might identify the person behind the messages, but

413
00:22:20.779 --> 00:22:25.000
those records didn't come back immediately. Some companies took weeks

414
00:22:25.039 --> 00:22:28.960
to respond or longer, leaving investigators waiting for information that

415
00:22:29.000 --> 00:22:32.759
could potentially reveal who was behind the accounts. At some

416
00:22:32.799 --> 00:22:36.069
point during the investigation, I'm not sure when, a warrant

417
00:22:36.109 --> 00:22:39.630
was issued for Anthony Holland's arrest. Christille also wanted a

418
00:22:39.670 --> 00:22:43.029
protection order against him, but police didn't have a current

419
00:22:43.190 --> 00:22:46.710
address for Anthony and they couldn't locate him. Without knowing

420
00:22:46.730 --> 00:22:49.099
where he was living, they were unable to arrest him

421
00:22:49.539 --> 00:22:51.420
or serve him with a protection order.

422
00:22:51.440 --> 00:22:54.339
I was going to ask you whether Anthony was living

423
00:22:54.359 --> 00:22:56.599
in the same area that they lived in, but it

424
00:22:56.660 --> 00:22:59.180
seems very odd that the police couldn't track him down.

425
00:22:59.990 --> 00:23:01.730
It is, but I'm not sure how hard they were

426
00:23:01.769 --> 00:23:04.609
trying to find him at this point. A flurry of

427
00:23:04.650 --> 00:23:08.269
messages were sent on November 13th. He don't deserve you.

428
00:23:08.369 --> 00:23:11.089
You know it. He don't satisfy you. That's why you

429
00:23:11.130 --> 00:23:13.849
keep all your fuckboys on the side. You don't want

430
00:23:13.869 --> 00:23:16.630
the fake married life. I see you flirting with waiters,

431
00:23:16.670 --> 00:23:19.730
almost begging for sex, licking your lips and got your

432
00:23:19.799 --> 00:23:22.819
tits out. Don't know how many fuckboys you kept, but

433
00:23:22.859 --> 00:23:26.420
I'll save you. I know he keeping us apart. You

434
00:23:26.460 --> 00:23:28.710
don't belong in that big house. You belong with me.

435
00:23:29.109 --> 00:23:31.069
I'll get rid of him so we can be together.

436
00:23:31.309 --> 00:23:34.970
So easy. He got a retard midget on security. They

437
00:23:35.009 --> 00:23:38.109
let me park and walk right into his workplace. Give

438
00:23:38.150 --> 00:23:41.269
me the signal and he won't come home. Ever married

439
00:23:41.329 --> 00:23:44.450
bitch I banged wanted to get rid of husbands. I'll

440
00:23:44.490 --> 00:23:46.569
do it for us. Help me get rid of him

441
00:23:46.589 --> 00:23:49.029
and then we can be together. Just like you want.

442
00:23:49.470 --> 00:23:52.130
I'm planning a big birthday party for you. Just you,

443
00:23:52.210 --> 00:23:54.670
me and 20 friends. In addition to all the other

444
00:23:54.710 --> 00:23:57.430
horrible things about these text messages, his grammar is atrocious.

445
00:23:57.450 --> 00:23:59.609
And the spelling is really bad too, and it's painful

446
00:23:59.650 --> 00:24:21.210
for me to read these to you guys. With all

447
00:24:21.230 --> 00:24:24.230
of these threatening messages, officers went to Dan's place of

448
00:24:24.269 --> 00:24:27.019
work to check on him and he was fine. On

449
00:24:27.059 --> 00:24:31.640
December 5th, Christille received the following email. Hey gorgeous, I

450
00:24:31.700 --> 00:24:35.220
can't visit you no more. No more Colorado time. My

451
00:24:35.259 --> 00:24:37.640
girlfriend doesn't want us talking without her. She says you

452
00:24:37.660 --> 00:24:40.329
will let cops get me after you off him. But

453
00:24:40.430 --> 00:24:42.650
she don't know you like I do. We got a

454
00:24:42.710 --> 00:24:45.289
new place on the east coast with lots of room.

455
00:24:45.769 --> 00:24:47.910
She said you can move in with us. We like

456
00:24:47.970 --> 00:24:51.259
three ways. Trash your husband and come. You know how

457
00:24:51.299 --> 00:24:54.140
to get me when he dead. The next day, there

458
00:24:54.180 --> 00:24:58.619
was a follow-up email. My other account was watched. New phones, too.

459
00:24:58.920 --> 00:25:02.329
Be strong. Come find you. I believe that is the

460
00:25:02.380 --> 00:25:03.960
last of Anthony's messages.

461
00:25:04.160 --> 00:25:04.529
Oh, good.

462
00:25:04.960 --> 00:25:08.710
Christille had two additional cameras installed outside their home, along

463
00:25:08.730 --> 00:25:12.009
with motion sensor lights. They already had two cameras, but

464
00:25:12.049 --> 00:25:16.109
she wanted every angle covered. Eventually, they had cameras monitoring

465
00:25:16.269 --> 00:25:19.130
the front door, the back patio, the side yard, and

466
00:25:19.150 --> 00:25:23.380
the garage entrance. They even installed dashboard cameras in their cars.

467
00:25:23.759 --> 00:25:26.720
Christille could check the camera feeds from her phone, giving

468
00:25:26.779 --> 00:25:30.920
her at least some sense of security. Feeling vulnerable and afraid,

469
00:25:30.980 --> 00:25:34.849
Christille confided in her father, Lars. Someone's going to die.

470
00:25:35.109 --> 00:25:37.849
It's either me or him. Either I'm going to have

471
00:25:37.869 --> 00:25:41.470
to kill him, or he's going to kill me. Lars

472
00:25:41.559 --> 00:25:44.559
loaned her a handgun for protection. When a friend told

473
00:25:44.599 --> 00:25:47.319
her it wasn't powerful enough, she traded it in for

474
00:25:47.359 --> 00:25:51.269
a new 9mm SIG Sauer with an optical laser red

475
00:25:51.329 --> 00:25:54.609
dot sighting system. She applied for and was granted a

476
00:25:54.670 --> 00:25:58.529
concealed carry permit. She enrolled in gun safety class and

477
00:25:58.650 --> 00:26:02.670
practiced at shooting ranges. Christille even bought a special purse

478
00:26:02.710 --> 00:26:06.059
to carry the firearm in. She began changing the routes

479
00:26:06.099 --> 00:26:08.799
she took to work and to her children's schools, but

480
00:26:08.900 --> 00:26:12.470
nothing seemed to stop the messages. She worried constantly about

481
00:26:12.509 --> 00:26:14.950
her safety and the safety of Dan and the children.

482
00:26:14.970 --> 00:26:18.990
Desperate to find Anthony, she hired a private investigator who

483
00:26:19.069 --> 00:26:22.809
tracked down several addresses associated with him over the years

484
00:26:22.990 --> 00:26:26.470
in Idaho and Utah. They also learned that he drove

485
00:26:26.490 --> 00:26:30.440
a silver Camry, which put Christille on high alert whenever

486
00:26:30.519 --> 00:26:35.000
she saw one. They were everywhere. The constant vigilance began

487
00:26:35.059 --> 00:26:38.460
disrupting every part of her life. Christille wasn't sleeping well

488
00:26:38.529 --> 00:26:40.930
and the stress was affecting her work and her usual

489
00:26:40.990 --> 00:26:45.250
gym routine. The children could sense something was wrong. Christille

490
00:26:45.289 --> 00:26:48.410
and Dan told them as little as possible, but warned

491
00:26:48.470 --> 00:26:52.150
them to be alert, and Christille even practiced safety drills

492
00:26:52.190 --> 00:26:57.900
with them. One of the email addresses being used was a.holland.kicks

493
00:26:58.099 --> 00:27:01.839
at gmail.com, inspiring one of the children to nickname the

494
00:27:01.880 --> 00:27:06.569
stalker Kickman. The name stuck. The children reassured their mother

495
00:27:06.650 --> 00:27:09.589
that she was strong enough to kick his butt. But

496
00:27:09.690 --> 00:27:13.849
Christy was genuinely frightened. Despite every precaution she took, she

497
00:27:13.930 --> 00:27:18.190
felt like she was being hunted. As Christmas approached, Christy

498
00:27:18.250 --> 00:27:21.269
wasn't feeling much of the holiday spirit. She had half-heartedly

499
00:27:21.309 --> 00:27:24.319
put up a few decorations, but hadn't done any Christmas shopping.

500
00:27:24.890 --> 00:27:27.920
The additional cameras and security measures were supposed to give

501
00:27:27.940 --> 00:27:30.900
her peace of mind, but instead she found herself checking

502
00:27:30.920 --> 00:27:34.180
the feeds on her phone at all hours. She even

503
00:27:34.220 --> 00:27:37.720
decided not to attend her daughter's Nutcracker performance out of

504
00:27:37.799 --> 00:27:40.740
fear that the stalker might show up. Watching her daughter

505
00:27:40.789 --> 00:27:43.529
dance was one of Christille's favorite events of the year,

506
00:27:43.869 --> 00:27:47.329
and missing it was heartbreaking for both of them. Throughout

507
00:27:47.390 --> 00:27:49.750
all of this, Dan appeared to be a supportive husband.

508
00:27:50.029 --> 00:27:52.450
He accompanied Christille when she met with the police and

509
00:27:52.509 --> 00:27:55.390
participated in conversations about how to keep her and the

510
00:27:55.430 --> 00:27:58.549
children safe. At a family birthday party, Dan asked his

511
00:27:58.609 --> 00:28:01.430
brother-in-law to help him stand guard outside and look for

512
00:28:01.490 --> 00:28:06.220
strange vehicles. he talked about the stalker non-stop. Christille's friends

513
00:28:06.259 --> 00:28:08.660
at work noticed a change in her, but she hadn't

514
00:28:08.700 --> 00:28:11.500
told them about the stalking. The Krugs tended to keep

515
00:28:11.539 --> 00:28:14.839
their private lives private, and Christille was even hesitant to

516
00:28:14.880 --> 00:28:18.019
tell her mother everything she was going through, but Linda

517
00:28:18.079 --> 00:28:22.269
knew her daughter was struggling. On December 5th, 2023, when

518
00:28:22.289 --> 00:28:25.529
Detective Andrew Martinez arrived at work, there was an interesting

519
00:28:25.650 --> 00:28:28.970
email message in his inbox from John Doe. It read,

520
00:28:28.990 --> 00:28:32.349
I got your number from Christille Krug. but she doesn't know.

521
00:28:32.630 --> 00:28:36.180
Christelle Krug lies. There's no stalker because she and me

522
00:28:36.240 --> 00:28:39.039
did all of it. You can't find Anthony because he's

523
00:28:39.079 --> 00:28:42.220
not there. She planned everything to get rid of her husband.

524
00:28:42.579 --> 00:28:45.519
We've been dating for over a year. She gave sex

525
00:28:45.579 --> 00:28:49.369
and promised life insurance money to frame Anthony and kill Dan.

526
00:28:49.809 --> 00:28:52.369
I didn't do it and she got pissed. She said

527
00:28:52.410 --> 00:28:55.809
her other boyfriend will step up. Now I'm a target.

528
00:28:56.170 --> 00:28:59.710
I'm skipping town. She always carries secret guns and will

529
00:28:59.730 --> 00:29:03.470
kill him before January. said she will kill police to

530
00:29:03.490 --> 00:29:06.910
get him. He's dead if you don't stop her. Good luck.

531
00:29:07.369 --> 00:29:09.430
Wow, so this is becoming really convoluted here.

532
00:29:09.470 --> 00:29:09.750
Yeah.

533
00:29:09.809 --> 00:29:13.490
Now we allegedly have another person that was having an

534
00:29:13.529 --> 00:29:14.190
affair with her.

535
00:29:14.210 --> 00:29:16.130
And Chris still has boyfriends all over the place.

536
00:29:16.150 --> 00:29:21.470
That's what it sounds like. Wow, that's crazy. On December 14th, 2023,

537
00:29:21.470 --> 00:29:24.779
Officer John O'Hare drove to the Krug's home in Broomfield

538
00:29:24.880 --> 00:29:27.720
to perform the welfare check. When he arrived at their

539
00:29:27.759 --> 00:29:31.829
residence at 1224 p.m., the house was quiet, Except for

540
00:29:31.869 --> 00:29:34.519
the barking dog in their kennel, all the doors and

541
00:29:34.559 --> 00:29:38.170
windows were closed and the blinds drawn. A neighbor was

542
00:29:38.230 --> 00:29:41.460
at the front door knocking when... Officer O'Hare walked up.

543
00:29:42.019 --> 00:29:44.019
She said that Dan had called her to check on

544
00:29:44.059 --> 00:29:47.690
Christille too. She laughed and let the officer handle things.

545
00:29:48.349 --> 00:29:51.029
He then rang the doorbell and knocked loudly but no

546
00:29:51.109 --> 00:29:54.109
one answered. He walked around the house but couldn't see

547
00:29:54.210 --> 00:29:57.180
in any of the windows. Unable to reach the windows

548
00:29:57.259 --> 00:30:00.849
on the garage door, O'Hare pulled his SUV closer, stepping

549
00:30:00.910 --> 00:30:04.109
on the front bumper to peer inside. Near the door

550
00:30:04.150 --> 00:30:06.049
to the house, he could see the shape of a

551
00:30:06.130 --> 00:30:09.829
woman lying on the cement with blood pooling around her body.

552
00:30:10.210 --> 00:30:12.700
The amount of blood made it unlikely that the woman

553
00:30:12.740 --> 00:30:16.319
was still alive. O'Hare ran to the front door, kicked

554
00:30:16.359 --> 00:30:19.339
it in, and then traveled through the house into the garage.

555
00:30:19.980 --> 00:30:23.140
As he approached Christille's body, he saw the wound to

556
00:30:23.180 --> 00:30:26.779
the back of her head. He muttered, holy shit, audible

557
00:30:26.819 --> 00:30:30.990
to his body camera. Her skull was violently crushed. He

558
00:30:31.029 --> 00:30:33.549
wasn't sure if she had fallen or had been attacked.

559
00:30:34.150 --> 00:30:36.950
The border of the pool of blood surrounding Christille had

560
00:30:36.990 --> 00:30:40.670
begun to dry and darken. When Officer O'Hare bent down

561
00:30:40.730 --> 00:30:43.779
to feel for a pulse, Christille's skin was still warm

562
00:30:43.819 --> 00:30:46.680
to the touch, giving him hope that he could save her.

563
00:30:47.400 --> 00:30:50.740
When Officer O'Hare began the required chest compressions until the

564
00:30:50.759 --> 00:30:54.630
paramedics arrived, He didn't notice a gaping stab wound near

565
00:30:54.670 --> 00:30:58.450
her heart, masked by her heavy coat. After Dan had

566
00:30:58.509 --> 00:31:01.950
called the police, he called her mother, Linda. She drove

567
00:31:02.029 --> 00:31:04.690
over to the house and arrived just as Officer O'Hare

568
00:31:04.730 --> 00:31:08.819
was opening the garage door for first responders. Linda witnessed

569
00:31:08.880 --> 00:31:11.519
her daughter splayed out on the cement floor in a

570
00:31:11.559 --> 00:31:14.960
pool of her own blood. O'Hare told her sternly to

571
00:31:15.019 --> 00:31:18.240
stay out of the garage. Another officer arrived on the

572
00:31:18.279 --> 00:31:21.650
scene and swooped in to lead her away. Other friends

573
00:31:21.690 --> 00:31:24.680
had gathered at the scene to comfort Linda. Linda could

574
00:31:24.700 --> 00:31:27.920
be heard on his body camera saying, This can't be real.

575
00:31:28.299 --> 00:31:29.880
Please tell me she's okay.

576
00:31:30.259 --> 00:31:32.500
This is a heartbreaking scene. If you watch any of

577
00:31:32.559 --> 00:31:37.529
the TV shows on it, Linda was instantly just emotion

578
00:31:37.569 --> 00:31:38.349
washed over her.

579
00:31:38.369 --> 00:31:39.170
I can imagine.

580
00:31:39.230 --> 00:31:42.730
She was hoping that Christille was alive. It was really

581
00:31:42.750 --> 00:31:43.390
heartbreaking to see.

582
00:31:43.450 --> 00:31:46.069
Yeah, that's just horrific as a parent to come and

583
00:31:46.089 --> 00:31:50.579
find your daughter like that. Sadly, Christille wasn't okay. She

584
00:31:50.619 --> 00:31:53.059
was rushed to the hospital where she was declared dead

585
00:31:53.160 --> 00:31:57.619
at 12.43 p.m. Moments later, Daniel Krug pulled up and

586
00:31:57.740 --> 00:32:01.529
instantly saw the yellow police tape surrounding his home. First

587
00:32:01.569 --> 00:32:04.970
responders' vehicles lined the street, forcing him to park several

588
00:32:05.009 --> 00:32:11.380
houses away. He ran from his car, shouting, Detective Martinez

589
00:32:11.430 --> 00:32:14.759
informed Dan that Christille was dead. He let out a

590
00:32:14.880 --> 00:32:18.960
primal scream, tears running down his face, his body wracked

591
00:32:19.019 --> 00:32:22.460
by sobs, retching. He fell to the ground into the

592
00:32:22.500 --> 00:32:26.720
fetal position. Heather Eights, a victim advocate for the Broomfield

593
00:32:26.779 --> 00:32:29.950
Police Department, was there to comfort Dan and Christille's other

594
00:32:29.990 --> 00:32:33.630
family members. He required assistance to get into a police

595
00:32:33.690 --> 00:32:36.710
vehicle to be driven to the station. On the way,

596
00:32:36.809 --> 00:32:40.230
he asked about his children. Officers told him not to worry,

597
00:32:40.490 --> 00:32:43.579
they would take care of them. As the CSIs descended

598
00:32:43.660 --> 00:32:47.480
on the scene, the investigation quickly unfolded. They discovered the

599
00:32:47.519 --> 00:32:50.920
doorbell camera was covered with blue painter's tape, and the

600
00:32:50.980 --> 00:32:55.430
other cameras were offline. Neighboring cameras captured no one approaching

601
00:32:55.470 --> 00:32:58.910
the house and no unfamiliar vehicles on the street. There

602
00:32:58.950 --> 00:33:01.910
were no signs of forced entry or robbery, and the

603
00:33:01.970 --> 00:33:06.099
weapons used to attack Christille were gone. When police canvassed

604
00:33:06.160 --> 00:33:09.720
the Krug's neighborhood, no one reported seeing anything suspicious or

605
00:33:09.880 --> 00:33:13.920
any unfamiliar vehicles in the area. Neighbors described the Krugs

606
00:33:14.019 --> 00:33:17.160
as a nice, quiet family and Dan as a hands-on

607
00:33:17.220 --> 00:33:20.180
father who was often outside playing with the children.

608
00:33:20.700 --> 00:33:23.380
So the police did go through all their surveillance camera

609
00:33:23.400 --> 00:33:27.750
footage from the neighbors and identified every vehicle. They were like,

610
00:33:28.130 --> 00:33:28.910
everyone is accounted for.

611
00:33:28.930 --> 00:33:33.640
Everyone was accounted for, yeah. On December 14, 2023, around noon,

612
00:33:33.900 --> 00:33:39.190
in American Fork, Utah, Anthony Holland, 41, Chris Steele's alleged stalker,

613
00:33:39.589 --> 00:33:43.250
walked into a Kohl's store decorated for Christmas, with holiday

614
00:33:43.309 --> 00:33:47.349
music playing over the loudspeakers. Anthony later said he wasn't

615
00:33:47.430 --> 00:33:50.490
sure what compelled him to go shopping that day. He

616
00:33:50.549 --> 00:33:53.970
worked as a server at Texas Roadhouse in Sandy, Utah.

617
00:33:54.490 --> 00:33:56.670
He had gotten off late the previous night and had

618
00:33:56.730 --> 00:34:00.859
slept in. He lived with elderly family friends in Eagle Mountain.

619
00:34:01.420 --> 00:34:04.119
Anthony walked the perimeter of the store before stopping in

620
00:34:04.160 --> 00:34:07.400
the men's department. He settled on a green sweatshirt, his

621
00:34:07.480 --> 00:34:11.909
only purchase that day. At self-checkout, Anthony paid cash, printed

622
00:34:11.949 --> 00:34:15.750
the receipt, and tucked it into the bag with his sweatshirt. Later,

623
00:34:15.769 --> 00:34:18.070
he would be very glad he had this proof of

624
00:34:18.130 --> 00:34:20.650
his location when the police were at his door.

625
00:34:21.389 --> 00:34:21.670
Mr.

626
00:34:21.710 --> 00:34:24.639
Holland, do you know a woman named Christelle Krug? You

627
00:34:24.679 --> 00:34:26.659
may have known her as Christelle Grimsrud?

628
00:34:27.349 --> 00:34:29.130
Sure, I knew her in high school. We dated for

629
00:34:29.150 --> 00:34:31.030
the better part of a year, but I haven't talked

630
00:34:31.050 --> 00:34:32.170
to her in over 20 years.

631
00:34:32.429 --> 00:34:34.929
Have you had any contact with her through social media?

632
00:34:35.309 --> 00:34:37.010
I don't have any social media accounts.

633
00:34:37.349 --> 00:34:40.369
While someone has been harassing Ms. Krug using your name,

634
00:34:41.030 --> 00:34:45.159
Anthony was shocked. Mr. Holland, can you confirm your whereabouts today?

635
00:34:45.719 --> 00:34:47.960
Well, I worked late last night, so I slept in,

636
00:34:48.019 --> 00:34:50.480
and then I went shopping at Kohl's. I think I

637
00:34:50.519 --> 00:34:51.360
still have my receipt.

638
00:34:52.139 --> 00:34:54.780
Once he handed over the receipt, officers knew that it

639
00:34:54.820 --> 00:34:57.719
would have been impossible for him to have been in Broomfield,

640
00:34:57.760 --> 00:35:01.519
Colorado that morning. Who was trying to frame this innocent man,

641
00:35:01.800 --> 00:35:02.320
and why?

642
00:35:02.340 --> 00:35:05.079
Is Christiel okay? Is she in danger?

643
00:35:05.099 --> 00:35:08.719
Police were able to verify that Anthony Holland had indeed

644
00:35:08.800 --> 00:35:12.260
worked the night before, and surveillance footage from Coles also

645
00:35:12.340 --> 00:35:14.949
confirmed that he had been there. His cell phone had

646
00:35:14.989 --> 00:35:17.530
not left the state, and he had not taken a flight.

647
00:35:17.929 --> 00:35:21.190
There was no way he had murdered Christiel. He was

648
00:35:21.230 --> 00:35:24.139
saddened when officers told him of her death. He had

649
00:35:24.219 --> 00:35:26.239
always thought of her as the one who got away,

650
00:35:26.260 --> 00:35:30.400
the love of his life. When Christille reported the harassment,

651
00:35:30.980 --> 00:35:34.260
they couldn't find Anthony. But now suddenly they found him.

652
00:35:34.280 --> 00:35:36.710
They found him within hours. Isn't that frustrating?

653
00:35:36.730 --> 00:35:38.769
Yeah, that's really wild. So they must not have tried

654
00:35:38.809 --> 00:35:41.510
very hard. And all of a sudden with her murder,

655
00:35:42.289 --> 00:35:43.000
they actually said no.

656
00:35:43.010 --> 00:35:46.139
She had also hired a private detective. And the private

657
00:35:46.179 --> 00:35:49.940
detective gave her... several addresses, but they weren't sure which

658
00:35:50.019 --> 00:35:52.820
one was the correct one. But his living situation sounds

659
00:35:52.860 --> 00:35:55.219
like he may have changed frequently.

660
00:35:55.260 --> 00:35:55.539
Yeah.

661
00:35:55.659 --> 00:35:58.579
And he was living with his elderly couple. Right. So.

662
00:35:59.000 --> 00:36:01.280
You can understand that it might be a little difficult,

663
00:36:01.409 --> 00:36:03.989
but the fact that they found him so quickly after

664
00:36:04.030 --> 00:36:09.670
his death. That same morning, 500 miles away in Broomfield, Colorado,

665
00:36:09.829 --> 00:36:13.010
before the sun had even risen, Christille made sure the

666
00:36:13.050 --> 00:36:16.150
children were up for school. She made their lunches while

667
00:36:16.170 --> 00:36:19.210
Dan readied their backpacks. They had one hour to get

668
00:36:19.250 --> 00:36:22.570
ready for school and eat breakfast. Like most mornings, it

669
00:36:22.590 --> 00:36:24.690
was a mad dash to get everyone out the door

670
00:36:24.769 --> 00:36:27.610
and where they needed to be. Dan drove their oldest

671
00:36:27.650 --> 00:36:30.980
daughter to the bus stop at 6.45, returning a few

672
00:36:31.019 --> 00:36:35.000
minutes later complaining of stomach distress, which prolonged his usual

673
00:36:35.039 --> 00:36:39.579
departure time. At 7.42, Christille drove the two younger children

674
00:36:39.619 --> 00:36:43.659
to school and returned at 7.58. Later, it would be

675
00:36:43.679 --> 00:36:47.110
discovered that at 8.15, three of the four cameras at

676
00:36:47.119 --> 00:36:51.909
the Krug's residence went dark. Dan left for work at 8.24,

677
00:36:51.909 --> 00:36:55.630
30 minutes later than normal. Despite running late, he stopped

678
00:36:55.690 --> 00:36:58.829
at a local cafe to get coffee. When they prepared

679
00:36:58.889 --> 00:37:02.210
an iced latte rather than his usual hot beverage, he

680
00:37:02.250 --> 00:37:06.030
demanded they remake it and waited. It was a 45-minute

681
00:37:06.050 --> 00:37:10.409
drive to his office in Glendale. At 8.56 a.m., Christille

682
00:37:10.449 --> 00:37:13.469
sent a text to Dan. Can you get eldest daughter

683
00:37:13.590 --> 00:37:15.949
after school? I need to meet with Martinez.

684
00:37:16.610 --> 00:37:19.349
Later, Martinez would dispute that they had a meeting because

685
00:37:19.389 --> 00:37:20.269
it was his day off.

686
00:37:21.170 --> 00:37:25.809
Dan texted back at 9.17. Sure thing. FYI, I forgot

687
00:37:25.829 --> 00:37:28.429
my chicken on the counter. Please put it in the fridge.

688
00:37:29.070 --> 00:37:32.789
By 9.30, he was seated at his desk. Christille hadn't

689
00:37:32.849 --> 00:37:37.039
responded to his last text message. At 10.03, he texted,

690
00:37:37.400 --> 00:37:39.880
Did you tell eldest daughter you were picking her up early?

691
00:37:40.250 --> 00:37:42.449
Just need to know what time so I leave work.

692
00:37:43.030 --> 00:37:49.280
He didn't receive a response. At 10.33, he texted Detective Martinez. Hi, Martinez.

693
00:37:49.559 --> 00:37:51.719
Christille didn't say what time you were meeting, and I

694
00:37:51.780 --> 00:37:54.400
think her phone is off. Please have her text me

695
00:37:54.460 --> 00:37:57.650
the time to pick up eldest daughter. I'm headed into meetings.

696
00:37:57.949 --> 00:38:00.849
Okay, remember, we're calling her eldest daughter because we're trying

697
00:38:00.869 --> 00:38:04.269
not to use her name. But also, isn't it really

698
00:38:04.349 --> 00:38:06.469
weird that he's texting the detective?

699
00:38:06.849 --> 00:38:07.070
It is.

700
00:38:07.449 --> 00:38:12.239
Yeah, it is very strange. At 11.47, he again texted Christille.

701
00:38:12.739 --> 00:38:15.380
I'll plan on 30 minutes early if I don't hear otherwise.

702
00:38:15.579 --> 00:38:19.019
Text me back. Just before noon, he again texted the

703
00:38:19.079 --> 00:38:23.340
detective with a screenshot of the unread messages to Christille. Quote,

704
00:38:23.739 --> 00:38:28.429
this feels weird. At 12.02, he called the non-emergency number

705
00:38:28.489 --> 00:38:31.230
to the Broomfield Police Department with the call that we

706
00:38:31.269 --> 00:38:33.769
heard at the top of the show. He also called

707
00:38:33.829 --> 00:38:36.829
Christille's mother, Linda, and a neighbor to check on her.

708
00:38:37.460 --> 00:38:39.900
I think I have forgotten to mention that Christille works

709
00:38:39.940 --> 00:38:43.239
from home and she's busy. You know, she has meetings

710
00:38:43.280 --> 00:38:45.880
all day. So he hasn't heard from her in just

711
00:38:45.920 --> 00:38:50.170
a couple of hours. So he contacts the detective. He

712
00:38:50.369 --> 00:38:52.969
calls the police department and then he reaches out to

713
00:38:53.010 --> 00:38:56.570
Christille's mother and a neighbor, you know, all saying something

714
00:38:56.610 --> 00:38:57.469
doesn't feel right here.

715
00:38:57.489 --> 00:38:58.449
It seems like a lot.

716
00:38:59.280 --> 00:39:08.980
We'll be back after a break. Music With Anthony's movements

717
00:39:09.039 --> 00:39:13.340
accounted for, investigators began taking a much closer look at Dan.

718
00:39:13.900 --> 00:39:16.800
After seizing his car, they discovered that he'd turned off

719
00:39:16.860 --> 00:39:21.219
his dash camera shortly before stopping for coffee that morning. Then,

720
00:39:21.300 --> 00:39:25.909
the digital evidence began pouring in. Within hours of Christiel's murder,

721
00:39:26.170 --> 00:39:29.849
a digital forensic examiner began digging into the electronic trail

722
00:39:30.219 --> 00:39:33.880
left by her stalker. Investigators discovered that some of the

723
00:39:33.920 --> 00:39:38.750
messages had originated from the Colorado Department of Public Health

724
00:39:38.869 --> 00:39:43.750
and Environment, Dan's workplace. They also learned that burner phones

725
00:39:43.849 --> 00:39:47.050
connected to the stalking had been purchased using a Visa

726
00:39:47.070 --> 00:39:50.820
gift card registered to Dan. and location showed one of

727
00:39:50.860 --> 00:39:55.380
those phones traveling with Dan's personal phone on multiple occasions.

728
00:39:56.079 --> 00:40:00.659
Investigators also found disturbing searches about head injuries, including when

729
00:40:00.719 --> 00:40:03.800
is a head injury a cause for concern, how hard

730
00:40:03.840 --> 00:40:05.699
would you have to hit someone in the head to

731
00:40:05.739 --> 00:40:09.420
make them unconscious, and how long can you be unconscious

732
00:40:09.480 --> 00:40:13.230
without brain damage. There was another problem with Dan's timeline.

733
00:40:13.849 --> 00:40:16.650
At 8.56 that morning, he had received a text message

734
00:40:16.690 --> 00:40:20.449
from Christille. But forensic evidence showed that her phone had

735
00:40:20.510 --> 00:40:25.690
last been actively used at 8.22 a.m. Investigators eventually discovered

736
00:40:25.769 --> 00:40:28.429
how a message could have come from Christille's phone more

737
00:40:28.469 --> 00:40:31.179
than half an hour after someone had stopped using it.

738
00:40:31.730 --> 00:40:34.849
It's really frustrating that police now are going through all

739
00:40:34.889 --> 00:40:37.840
this digital evidence from the stalking and finding these things.

740
00:40:37.880 --> 00:40:40.159
Yeah, all of a sudden this investigation is just falling

741
00:40:40.199 --> 00:40:44.900
into place within hours of her death. What really happened?

742
00:40:45.260 --> 00:40:49.099
Investigators now believed that after Christille returned from dropping the

743
00:40:49.139 --> 00:40:52.659
younger children at school, Dan attacked her inside their garage.

744
00:40:53.119 --> 00:40:56.409
Christille was struck repeatedly in the head with a blunt

745
00:40:56.530 --> 00:40:59.789
object and then stabbed in the heart. The attack appears

746
00:40:59.849 --> 00:41:02.869
to have taken her completely by surprise. There were no

747
00:41:02.929 --> 00:41:05.889
defensive wounds and little evidence that she had been able

748
00:41:05.909 --> 00:41:09.550
to fight back. This was particularly remarkable because by then,

749
00:41:09.769 --> 00:41:12.760
Christille had become so frightened of her stalker that she

750
00:41:12.840 --> 00:41:16.449
had taken to carrying a gun in a holster. It

751
00:41:16.530 --> 00:41:19.650
never left the holster and she was a fighter. She

752
00:41:19.750 --> 00:41:23.230
would have fought back if she had the opportunity. Investigators

753
00:41:23.269 --> 00:41:26.469
believe Dan then used Christille's phone before leaving the house,

754
00:41:26.590 --> 00:41:29.530
setting up messages that would be delivered later and to

755
00:41:29.590 --> 00:41:32.610
create the appearance that Christille was still alive after he

756
00:41:32.630 --> 00:41:36.110
had gone to work. Dan left the house at 8.24 a.m.

757
00:41:36.170 --> 00:41:40.610
and began what on the surface looked like an ordinary morning, coffee, work,

758
00:41:40.670 --> 00:41:43.949
text to his wife, and eventually growing concerned when she

759
00:41:43.969 --> 00:41:48.130
didn't respond. As Dan's interview began at the Broomfield police station,

760
00:41:48.570 --> 00:41:52.090
he was out of sorts, still overwrought with emotion, and

761
00:41:52.250 --> 00:41:55.869
unable to answer questions with more than a few stuttered words.

762
00:41:56.489 --> 00:42:00.030
His speech was at times unintelligible. When asked what he

763
00:42:00.070 --> 00:42:02.849
did at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment,

764
00:42:03.230 --> 00:42:06.610
he handed over his badge and said, money. When asked

765
00:42:06.659 --> 00:42:08.760
about the state of his marriage, he said, not good.

766
00:42:09.309 --> 00:42:11.989
He admitted that they discussed divorce, but that he didn't

767
00:42:12.030 --> 00:42:15.590
want to end their marriage. The detectives informed Dan that

768
00:42:15.650 --> 00:42:18.809
his three children were at the police station. His in-laws

769
00:42:18.849 --> 00:42:22.010
were also there. The officers wanted to know how Dan

770
00:42:22.070 --> 00:42:25.150
wanted to inform the children of their mother's passing. They

771
00:42:25.250 --> 00:42:28.130
offered to have their trained expert tell them, but Dan

772
00:42:28.170 --> 00:42:30.469
insisted he wanted to be the one to tell them.

773
00:42:31.210 --> 00:42:34.230
Before they left the police station with their grandparents, Dan

774
00:42:34.309 --> 00:42:36.489
told his children that their mother had been hurt and

775
00:42:36.530 --> 00:42:38.989
died that day and that she would not be coming home.

776
00:42:39.730 --> 00:42:42.869
The children were confused and devastated by the news. Linda

777
00:42:42.929 --> 00:42:45.010
and Lars took them to their uncle's house where the

778
00:42:45.050 --> 00:42:46.050
family had gathered.

779
00:42:46.070 --> 00:42:48.960
Remind me how old the children were?

780
00:42:48.960 --> 00:42:52.599
14, 11, and 8. I heard the audio of Dan

781
00:42:52.639 --> 00:42:55.719
telling his children. It's heartbreaking. I think the police at

782
00:42:55.739 --> 00:42:59.019
this point obviously are suspecting him and didn't want him

783
00:42:59.099 --> 00:43:01.719
out of their sights for too long, but it's heartbreaking

784
00:43:01.739 --> 00:43:04.989
to hear that. When Detective Martinez walked into the room,

785
00:43:05.150 --> 00:43:08.769
the detective most familiar with Chris Steele's stalker, Dan began

786
00:43:08.809 --> 00:43:12.530
to weep again and repeated, I was supposed to protect her.

787
00:43:13.260 --> 00:43:16.199
The detective laid a sympathetic hand on Dan's shoulder and

788
00:43:16.239 --> 00:43:19.860
apologized for not answering his earlier text. By then, Dan's

789
00:43:19.920 --> 00:43:23.019
tears had dried. He took off his glasses and refused

790
00:43:23.039 --> 00:43:25.599
to make eye contact, a crumpled tissue in his hand.

791
00:43:26.199 --> 00:43:30.659
Eve remained stoic, answering questions in a quiet, almost whispered voice.

792
00:43:31.340 --> 00:43:35.300
As the questions intensified, Dan's body language became closed off

793
00:43:35.679 --> 00:43:39.300
as he shifted uncomfortably on the couch. The detectives asked

794
00:43:39.360 --> 00:43:41.550
if he was aware that his home's cameras had been

795
00:43:41.590 --> 00:43:45.449
disabled at 8.15 that morning, although the garage camera captured

796
00:43:45.469 --> 00:43:49.730
Dan leaving his home at 8.24 a.m. Dan said that

797
00:43:49.769 --> 00:43:53.090
wasn't possible. They never turned off the cameras. Maybe they'd

798
00:43:53.110 --> 00:43:57.349
lost internet connection briefly, he pondered. Detective Martinez asked.

799
00:43:57.630 --> 00:43:58.650
Who do you think killed her?

800
00:43:59.210 --> 00:44:00.239
I think it's Anthony.

801
00:44:01.000 --> 00:44:03.110
What if I told you that we had already spoken

802
00:44:03.119 --> 00:44:06.130
with Anthony and there's no way he was in town today?

803
00:44:06.150 --> 00:44:09.090
And I have nothing and I'm fucking terrified to bring

804
00:44:09.130 --> 00:44:10.110
my children home.

805
00:44:10.590 --> 00:44:11.670
What are you terrified of?

806
00:44:12.150 --> 00:44:14.070
If it wasn't him, who was it?

807
00:44:14.769 --> 00:44:17.119
I ask you that. If you were watching these facts

808
00:44:17.199 --> 00:44:19.360
unfold in front of you in a movie, what would

809
00:44:19.400 --> 00:44:20.280
you say happened?

810
00:44:20.619 --> 00:44:23.199
There has to be someone else. I loved her. There

811
00:44:23.280 --> 00:44:25.440
has to be someone else. But I don't know who

812
00:44:25.480 --> 00:44:25.920
that is.

813
00:44:26.340 --> 00:44:27.739
Help me make sense of it.

814
00:44:28.239 --> 00:44:31.090
I don't know. I'm not the one who does this.

815
00:44:31.590 --> 00:44:33.739
I don't have a narrative or story that I can

816
00:44:33.900 --> 00:44:37.539
offer you. I get the narrative you're putting together, but

817
00:44:37.579 --> 00:44:40.360
it alleges that I would do this to my children.

818
00:44:40.800 --> 00:44:44.159
I love and adore my children. Despite the evidence he

819
00:44:44.199 --> 00:44:48.429
was presented with, Dan was adamant that it was Anthony Holland, Kickman,

820
00:44:48.630 --> 00:44:51.670
who committed Chris Teal's murder, even after he was confronted

821
00:44:51.710 --> 00:44:54.710
with evidence that it was impossible that he'd been in

822
00:44:54.789 --> 00:44:58.809
Broomfield that day. The tension in the room intensified further

823
00:44:59.090 --> 00:45:03.059
when Detective Jennifer King Sullivan said, There's.

824
00:45:02.300 --> 00:45:05.059
No physical way that Kickman could have been involved in

825
00:45:05.079 --> 00:45:07.360
this based on where he's at right now, so the

826
00:45:07.400 --> 00:45:08.940
mystery continues and.

827
00:45:09.480 --> 00:45:12.039
Dan rolled his eyes and interrupted, It has to be

828
00:45:12.079 --> 00:45:14.389
the husband. I get the narrative that you're trying to

829
00:45:14.409 --> 00:45:16.650
put out there, but it alleges that I would do

830
00:45:16.690 --> 00:45:17.730
this to my children.

831
00:45:18.090 --> 00:45:20.170
Provide us a different explanation then.

832
00:45:20.530 --> 00:45:23.929
There has to be someone else. I'm tired. I want

833
00:45:23.949 --> 00:45:27.090
to go home. I don't want to be here. I

834
00:45:27.150 --> 00:45:30.500
want to hug my children. You have your theory. It

835
00:45:30.780 --> 00:45:34.340
is wrong. Please find the right one. I have to

836
00:45:34.400 --> 00:45:37.659
say here, I listened to about two hours of this

837
00:45:38.039 --> 00:45:41.480
interview and his voice, I know I'm doing a horrible job.

838
00:45:41.960 --> 00:45:44.909
He was like doing this weird whisper talk and talking

839
00:45:44.969 --> 00:45:46.469
emphatically at different times.

840
00:45:46.610 --> 00:45:48.690
Sounds kind of like Batman to me. I know that's

841
00:45:48.710 --> 00:45:49.409
going to sound odd.

842
00:45:51.340 --> 00:45:54.679
Um, I did link, I think it's from YouTube, what

843
00:45:54.699 --> 00:45:57.860
I watched, so if you are interested, I would encourage

844
00:45:57.900 --> 00:46:00.820
you to go watch it, but it's just baffling to me.

845
00:46:01.440 --> 00:46:04.030
When Detective Martinez told Dan that some of the messages

846
00:46:04.110 --> 00:46:06.989
Christille received had been traced to the IP address at

847
00:46:07.030 --> 00:46:11.989
his workplace, Dan seemed momentarily flummoxed, but quickly recovered. He

848
00:46:12.090 --> 00:46:14.789
pointed out that anyone could sit outside the building and

849
00:46:14.969 --> 00:46:18.920
access the company's public Wi-Fi. After all, the stalker had

850
00:46:18.980 --> 00:46:22.380
taken a photo of him at work. The detective read

851
00:46:22.440 --> 00:46:25.829
Dan his Miranda rights. As the interview neared its end,

852
00:46:25.860 --> 00:46:30.340
investigators pressed Dan one last time and his approach noticeably shifted.

853
00:46:30.840 --> 00:46:35.059
He began portraying himself as the wronged husband, telling detectives

854
00:46:35.099 --> 00:46:38.360
that Christille had been keeping secrets from him and sometimes

855
00:46:38.460 --> 00:46:42.760
disappeared for hours without explanation. He didn't directly accuse her

856
00:46:42.800 --> 00:46:45.460
of having an affair, but Dan seemed to be planting

857
00:46:45.500 --> 00:46:48.619
the possibility that there might have been another man or

858
00:46:48.699 --> 00:46:53.019
men in Christille's life. Before he left, Dan relinquished his

859
00:46:53.099 --> 00:46:57.380
phones and laptop and was subjected to a full body search, fingerprinting,

860
00:46:57.659 --> 00:47:01.760
and DNA retrieval. He also surrendered his clothing and shoes

861
00:47:01.860 --> 00:47:05.280
before offering these parting words. I want you to find

862
00:47:05.429 --> 00:47:08.889
out who did this. Just don't stop looking elsewhere. I

863
00:47:09.349 --> 00:47:12.289
just want the fucker to pay. He took my children's

864
00:47:12.349 --> 00:47:15.809
mother before Christmas. They're never going to get over that.

865
00:47:16.170 --> 00:47:18.690
I don't care if you capture them. I don't care

866
00:47:18.730 --> 00:47:22.670
if you kill him. Find him. Don't just assume it's me.

867
00:47:22.989 --> 00:47:27.030
Keep looking. Although there wasn't enough evidence to arrest Dan

868
00:47:27.070 --> 00:47:28.909
and he was free to leave, he would be tailed

869
00:47:28.949 --> 00:47:32.019
by police in the coming days. They would have constant

870
00:47:32.179 --> 00:47:36.360
eyes on him. Police also interviewed Christille's family and close friends.

871
00:47:36.800 --> 00:47:39.909
Linda told investigators that Christille and Dan's marriage had been

872
00:47:39.989 --> 00:47:42.920
over for a year. Christille had once planned to stick

873
00:47:42.940 --> 00:47:46.280
things out until the youngest child graduated from high school,

874
00:47:46.530 --> 00:47:50.289
but that had become untenable for her. She loathed Dan,

875
00:47:50.530 --> 00:47:53.730
and he refused to leave. Christille opened a new bank

876
00:47:53.789 --> 00:47:57.010
account and had begun the process of separating their finances,

877
00:47:57.550 --> 00:48:01.960
but Dan wanted control of the children's college accounts. Linda

878
00:48:02.019 --> 00:48:04.059
said she had a gut feeling that Dan had been

879
00:48:04.079 --> 00:48:09.019
the one orchestrating Christille's torment. Christille, in fact, had confronted

880
00:48:09.059 --> 00:48:13.570
Dan about potentially being her stalker. He adamantly denied having

881
00:48:13.650 --> 00:48:16.289
anything to do with it, but she couldn't shake the thought.

882
00:48:17.150 --> 00:48:19.710
After he left the police department, Dan went to Christille's

883
00:48:19.769 --> 00:48:22.510
brother's house where the family had gathered with his children.

884
00:48:22.530 --> 00:48:26.400
He said to Christille's stepsister, Jenna Erickson, who is an attorney,

885
00:48:26.900 --> 00:48:29.539
I'm going to need help finding an attorney. It's always

886
00:48:29.579 --> 00:48:32.639
the husband. She was gobsmacked that that's what he was

887
00:48:32.679 --> 00:48:35.809
thinking of less than 12 hours after his wife's tragic death.

888
00:48:36.320 --> 00:48:38.840
Linda was equally shocked the next morning when Dan started

889
00:48:38.880 --> 00:48:41.000
talking about how he was planning to get rid of

890
00:48:41.019 --> 00:48:42.719
all of Christille's belongings.

891
00:48:43.659 --> 00:48:48.190
Within hours of Christille's murder, Broomfield Police Digital Forensic Examiner

892
00:48:48.349 --> 00:48:51.530
Randy Filak was on the case digging into the digital

893
00:48:51.610 --> 00:48:54.789
evidence to build a case. Now that the stalking case

894
00:48:54.809 --> 00:49:00.440
had become a homicide investigation, police submitted emergency requests for phone, email,

895
00:49:00.500 --> 00:49:04.929
and internet search records for Christille and Dan. Information that

896
00:49:04.949 --> 00:49:07.849
would have taken weeks to secure now flooded in quickly,

897
00:49:08.309 --> 00:49:12.449
and for Dan, well, it didn't look good. Investigators discovered

898
00:49:12.469 --> 00:49:15.170
that the security cameras at the front door, back door,

899
00:49:15.329 --> 00:49:18.059
and side of the house had been manually turned off

900
00:49:18.119 --> 00:49:21.659
the morning Christiel was killed. Evidence later showed that Dan

901
00:49:21.699 --> 00:49:26.119
had used Christiel's phone to disable the security system at 8.15 a.m.

902
00:49:26.840 --> 00:49:29.929
One camera near the garage remained on, likely to show

903
00:49:29.969 --> 00:49:32.969
Dan leaving for work, while the doorbell camera had been

904
00:49:33.010 --> 00:49:36.369
covered with blue painter's tape. They also took another look

905
00:49:36.409 --> 00:49:39.590
at the photograph the stalker had sent Christille showing Dan

906
00:49:39.630 --> 00:49:43.469
arriving at work on Halloween. Digital evidence revealed that the

907
00:49:43.510 --> 00:49:46.449
picture had been taken in selfie mode using a timer.

908
00:49:47.059 --> 00:49:49.900
Prosecutors said Dan had propped his burner phone on the

909
00:49:49.940 --> 00:49:53.480
back of his vehicle, staged the photograph himself, and then

910
00:49:53.579 --> 00:49:57.550
sent it to Christille while posing as her stalker. Randy

911
00:49:57.610 --> 00:50:01.210
Filak also found another damning connection between Dan and the

912
00:50:01.250 --> 00:50:05.000
burner phone. When Christille didn't immediately respond to one of

913
00:50:05.019 --> 00:50:08.800
the stalker's messages, the burner phone sent the word, test,

914
00:50:09.119 --> 00:50:14.159
to Dan's work phone. Dan's phone replied, yeah, suggesting Dan

915
00:50:14.179 --> 00:50:17.579
was checking to make sure the burner phone was working properly.

916
00:50:18.340 --> 00:50:22.159
But perhaps the most damning evidence came from Christille's own phone.

917
00:50:22.710 --> 00:50:25.010
On the morning of her murder, Dan received a text

918
00:50:25.090 --> 00:50:29.150
from Christille at 8.56am, more than half an hour after

919
00:50:29.250 --> 00:50:32.900
surveillance footage showed him leaving the house. The message asked

920
00:50:32.940 --> 00:50:34.980
him to pick up one of their children because she

921
00:50:35.039 --> 00:50:39.000
supposedly needed to meet with Detective Martinez. To Dan, it

922
00:50:39.039 --> 00:50:42.360
appeared to provide a perfect alibi. Chris Steele must have

923
00:50:42.420 --> 00:50:45.760
still been alive after he left for work. Except Chris

924
00:50:45.780 --> 00:50:49.519
Steele hadn't sent it. Investigators discovered that the message had

925
00:50:49.539 --> 00:50:53.449
been written earlier and scheduled to be sent automatically. Other

926
00:50:53.489 --> 00:50:56.809
messages had also been scheduled from Chris Steele's phone, including

927
00:50:56.949 --> 00:51:00.550
one to her father, Lars, brother, Lars Jr., and to

928
00:51:00.610 --> 00:51:05.909
Detective Martinez. The messages created an entirely new story, supposedly

929
00:51:05.989 --> 00:51:09.480
in Chris Steele's own words, quote, I can't keep up

930
00:51:09.500 --> 00:51:12.679
the lies. I had an affair for 18 months. We

931
00:51:12.760 --> 00:51:16.219
framed Anthony. Dan was supposed to kill himself in depression,

932
00:51:16.539 --> 00:51:20.360
not grow a spine. I just confessed to Martinez. My

933
00:51:20.420 --> 00:51:23.969
now ex-boyfriend and I are going there now. Push Dan

934
00:51:24.010 --> 00:51:28.150
to not press charges. Prosecutors later argued that Dan had

935
00:51:28.230 --> 00:51:31.630
programmed the messages before leaving the house, attempting to make

936
00:51:31.670 --> 00:51:35.119
it appear that Christille was still alive after Dan left

937
00:51:35.199 --> 00:51:39.000
for work. There was no evidence whatsoever that Christille had

938
00:51:39.139 --> 00:51:42.780
ever had an affair. This last series of messages seems

939
00:51:43.159 --> 00:51:46.539
really odd to me. Obviously, Dan sent them, you know,

940
00:51:46.780 --> 00:51:48.530
trying to make it look like Christille sent them. But

941
00:51:48.780 --> 00:51:51.289
why would Christille all of a sudden send all these

942
00:51:51.329 --> 00:51:55.469
messages saying, I had an affair, like, to... Detective Martinez

943
00:51:55.530 --> 00:51:57.150
and her family. It doesn't make any sense.

944
00:51:57.449 --> 00:51:59.829
I mean, Dan's just desperate at this point, right?

945
00:52:00.130 --> 00:52:02.289
He's just trying to put more messages out there and

946
00:52:02.869 --> 00:52:05.380
hope that they point attention away from him.

947
00:52:05.559 --> 00:52:08.260
It doesn't make any sense because there's not another man.

948
00:52:08.420 --> 00:52:11.179
They would know pretty quickly that there wasn't another man.

949
00:52:11.659 --> 00:52:14.659
Maybe Dan is trying to, there's another suspect out there.

950
00:52:14.719 --> 00:52:16.300
Yeah, he's trying to muddy the waters, I guess.

951
00:52:16.719 --> 00:52:19.050
But one of the things that stands out in the

952
00:52:19.090 --> 00:52:23.019
message was when he talked about Dan suddenly growing a spine.

953
00:52:23.159 --> 00:52:25.280
Where is the evidence that Dan ever had a spine?

954
00:52:25.460 --> 00:52:26.320
I'm not seeing it.

955
00:52:26.360 --> 00:52:30.510
Yeah, good point. Christille's autopsy was performed the morning after

956
00:52:30.550 --> 00:52:33.010
her death. It showed that she had been hit over

957
00:52:33.050 --> 00:52:36.329
the head with a blunt force object several times, then

958
00:52:36.429 --> 00:52:40.269
fell face forward onto the garage steps, injuring her forehead.

959
00:52:40.289 --> 00:52:42.969
Then she was hit again in the back of the head.

960
00:52:43.409 --> 00:52:46.449
There were no defensive wounds. The blows to the back

961
00:52:46.489 --> 00:52:49.099
of her head likely killed her, but her killer turned

962
00:52:49.139 --> 00:52:51.840
her over, and stabbed her in the heart to ensure

963
00:52:51.880 --> 00:52:55.179
her death. One thing the medical examiner was certain of

964
00:52:55.280 --> 00:52:58.699
was that the attack was abrupt and Christille died quickly

965
00:52:58.800 --> 00:53:01.739
from her injuries. She had had no time to react.

966
00:53:02.280 --> 00:53:04.820
Her car door was open, her purse with her gun

967
00:53:04.860 --> 00:53:10.340
inside had fallen to the ground near her. On December 16, 2023,

968
00:53:10.340 --> 00:53:13.210
around 6 p.m., Dan was on his way to King

969
00:53:13.289 --> 00:53:16.889
Soopers when eight police cars followed him and pulled him over.

970
00:53:17.519 --> 00:53:21.079
While Detective Martinez was cuffing Dan, he sneered, Do you

971
00:53:21.119 --> 00:53:22.940
want me to tell your kids that you killed their

972
00:53:22.980 --> 00:53:26.860
mother or do you want somebody else to? Dan responded solemnly,

973
00:53:26.880 --> 00:53:29.840
I want to talk to my attorney. He was arrested

974
00:53:29.920 --> 00:53:34.280
for first-degree murder, two counts of stalking, and criminal impersonation.

975
00:53:34.929 --> 00:53:37.309
He was stopping to buy flowers for his daughter, who

976
00:53:37.349 --> 00:53:41.039
was performing in the Nutcracker that evening. In April 2025,

977
00:53:41.030 --> 00:53:46.800
Daniel Krug's trial began. Dan, now entirely gray, remained stoic

978
00:53:46.860 --> 00:53:50.989
throughout the two-week trial. The prosecution's case was largely built

979
00:53:51.050 --> 00:53:55.050
around the mountain of digital evidence investigators had uncovered. They

980
00:53:55.150 --> 00:53:58.170
argued that Dan had begun planning the stalking and harassment

981
00:53:58.349 --> 00:54:02.869
months before Christille's murder, purchasing burner phones and creating fake

982
00:54:02.989 --> 00:54:07.360
email and messaging accounts to convince Christille that Anthony Holland

983
00:54:07.420 --> 00:54:11.739
was stalking her. By December, prosecutors argued, Dan's plan was

984
00:54:11.800 --> 00:54:15.449
falling apart. Rather than driving Christille back to him, the

985
00:54:15.469 --> 00:54:18.760
stalking had pushed her further away, and she had begun

986
00:54:18.800 --> 00:54:23.079
to suspect that Dan himself might somehow be involved. He

987
00:54:23.139 --> 00:54:26.380
was running out of time. If Christille discovered the truth

988
00:54:26.440 --> 00:54:29.429
and went to the police, the entire scheme would unravel.

989
00:54:30.050 --> 00:54:32.949
Anthony Holland took the stand at the trial. He later

990
00:54:33.010 --> 00:54:35.949
told 2020 that he tried to stare Dan down in

991
00:54:35.969 --> 00:54:39.389
the courtroom, furious that Dan had stolen his identity and

992
00:54:39.710 --> 00:54:42.949
and attempted to frame him for stalking and ultimately Chris

993
00:54:42.969 --> 00:54:47.429
Steele's murder. Dan refused to meet his gaze. Another surprising

994
00:54:47.469 --> 00:54:51.409
prosecution witness was Dan's former girlfriend Carrie, whom he had

995
00:54:51.449 --> 00:54:54.110
dated for a couple of years in high school and college.

996
00:54:54.800 --> 00:54:58.840
After Carrie ended their relationship, she began receiving messages through

997
00:54:59.000 --> 00:55:03.199
AOL Instant Messenger from strangers urging her to give Dan

998
00:55:03.260 --> 00:55:08.050
another shot. Dan had created these identities. When she refused

999
00:55:08.090 --> 00:55:11.289
to get back together with Dan, the messages became increasingly

1000
00:55:11.369 --> 00:55:14.690
abusive and threatening, at one point calling her a whore.

1001
00:55:15.289 --> 00:55:18.789
Police eventually traced the messages back to Dan's IP address.

1002
00:55:19.369 --> 00:55:22.550
Carrie obtained a temporary restraining order against him and the

1003
00:55:22.590 --> 00:55:26.869
messages stopped. She initially pursued a permanent protection order, but

1004
00:55:26.949 --> 00:55:30.610
dropped the matter after Dan hired an attorney. The experience

1005
00:55:30.630 --> 00:55:33.269
had been traumatic, but Carrie had moved on with her

1006
00:55:33.289 --> 00:55:36.989
life and hadn't thought about Dan in years. But Christille's

1007
00:55:37.030 --> 00:55:38.659
death had shaken her badly.

1008
00:55:39.280 --> 00:55:42.679
When Carrie found out about Dan's arrest, she came forward.

1009
00:55:42.739 --> 00:55:45.320
No one found her. She came forward. So it was

1010
00:55:45.360 --> 00:55:47.139
quite heroic that she testified.

1011
00:55:47.199 --> 00:55:49.579
Yeah, good for her. And I can imagine how traumatic

1012
00:55:49.599 --> 00:55:53.110
that must have been. The defense focused heavily on the

1013
00:55:53.139 --> 00:55:57.510
lack of physical evidence connecting Dan to Christille's murder. Dan

1014
00:55:57.550 --> 00:56:00.710
and Christille's oldest daughter was called as a defense witness.

1015
00:56:01.289 --> 00:56:04.610
she testified that the clothing police examined was the same

1016
00:56:04.670 --> 00:56:07.590
clothing she had seen her father wearing when he drove

1017
00:56:07.630 --> 00:56:10.829
her to the bus stop that morning. The defense pointed

1018
00:56:10.909 --> 00:56:14.159
out that no blood or DNA from Christille was found

1019
00:56:14.300 --> 00:56:18.599
on Dan's clothing or in his vehicle. The defense chastised

1020
00:56:18.659 --> 00:56:22.980
investigators for not testing Christille's phone for fingerprints, even though

1021
00:56:23.059 --> 00:56:26.309
prosecutors claimed that Dan had used it after killing her.

1022
00:56:26.949 --> 00:56:30.809
They focused on unknown DNA found on Christille's neck, and

1023
00:56:30.869 --> 00:56:34.309
the blue tape covering the ring camera also contained DNA

1024
00:56:34.550 --> 00:56:37.989
that did not belong to Dan. Neither murder weapon, the

1025
00:56:38.090 --> 00:56:41.280
object used to bludgeon Christille nor the knife used to

1026
00:56:41.320 --> 00:56:45.619
stab her, was ever recovered. Prosecutors countered that there was

1027
00:56:45.659 --> 00:56:48.960
a roughly five-minute period in Dan's morning that they could

1028
00:56:49.000 --> 00:56:52.320
not account for, giving him an opportunity to dispose of

1029
00:56:52.360 --> 00:56:56.380
the weapons and any other incriminating evidence before continuing on

1030
00:56:56.440 --> 00:57:00.380
to work. Dan did not testify at the trial. We'll

1031
00:57:00.420 --> 00:57:01.619
be back after a break.

1032
00:57:09.590 --> 00:57:11.730
After deliberating for about a day and a half, the

1033
00:57:11.769 --> 00:57:15.360
jury found Dan guilty on all counts. First-degree murder, two

1034
00:57:15.389 --> 00:57:19.420
counts of stalking, and a criminal impersonation. He displayed little

1035
00:57:19.460 --> 00:57:22.679
emotion as the verdict was read. Later, he was sentenced

1036
00:57:22.719 --> 00:57:26.909
to life in prison without the possibility of parole. At sentencing,

1037
00:57:27.070 --> 00:57:29.869
Christille's family and friends spent nearly an hour and a

1038
00:57:29.929 --> 00:57:33.360
half describing the woman they had lost and the devastation

1039
00:57:33.409 --> 00:57:37.280
her murder had left behind. Christille's sister-in-law read statements from

1040
00:57:37.340 --> 00:57:40.519
Christille and Dan's children about the loss of their mother.

1041
00:57:41.079 --> 00:57:44.179
Judge Priscilla Lowe sentenced Dan to life in prison without

1042
00:57:44.199 --> 00:57:47.079
the possibility of parole, plus another nine and a half

1043
00:57:47.139 --> 00:57:51.670
years for the stalking and criminal impersonation charges. Dan's parents

1044
00:57:51.710 --> 00:57:54.679
were not at the sentencing. One of Dan's brothers said

1045
00:57:54.719 --> 00:57:58.489
they couldn't bear to be there. After his conviction, Dan

1046
00:57:58.530 --> 00:58:02.150
continued to maintain his innocence. In a jailhouse call with

1047
00:58:02.190 --> 00:58:04.809
his parents, he complained about having to listen to people

1048
00:58:04.849 --> 00:58:07.730
he had once considered family speak against him at the

1049
00:58:07.789 --> 00:58:10.530
sentencing hearing. He said he didn't know how he was

1050
00:58:10.570 --> 00:58:14.250
supposed to show remorse for something he insisted he hadn't done.

1051
00:58:14.829 --> 00:58:17.969
Dan told his family he was deeply depressed, sleeping as

1052
00:58:18.010 --> 00:58:21.739
much as 16 hours a day. Quote, I sleep, I read,

1053
00:58:21.780 --> 00:58:25.429
and I cry. That's about it. He insisted that Christille's

1054
00:58:25.550 --> 00:58:28.239
real killer was still out there, warning his family that

1055
00:58:28.280 --> 00:58:30.719
his children could be in danger and needed to be

1056
00:58:30.760 --> 00:58:34.280
taken out of Colorado. His mother said in a stern voice,

1057
00:58:34.300 --> 00:58:37.480
Dan's older brother, Jeremy, a police officer, warned Dan that

1058
00:58:37.519 --> 00:58:53.670
support within the family was beginning to erode. Quote, I

1059
00:58:53.730 --> 00:58:56.269
want to believe you very much. There's a lot that's

1060
00:58:56.329 --> 00:58:59.260
come out and as imaginative as I can be with

1061
00:58:59.420 --> 00:59:03.179
finding explanations and ways to theorize how, you know, this

1062
00:59:03.260 --> 00:59:05.869
or that could have really been the reality, some of

1063
00:59:05.949 --> 00:59:10.619
it is beyond my creativity. In March 2026, or Governor

1064
00:59:10.699 --> 00:59:14.800
Tina Kotek signed Christille's Law, named in her honor. Although

1065
00:59:14.820 --> 00:59:18.329
Christille lived and was murdered in Colorado, the push for

1066
00:59:18.349 --> 00:59:21.550
the law began with her cousin, Becky Ivanoff, an attorney

1067
00:59:21.590 --> 00:59:25.909
in Eugene, Oregon, and former Lane County Deputy District Attorney

1068
00:59:26.090 --> 00:59:30.309
who had worked with domestic violence survivors. After Christille's murder,

1069
00:59:30.949 --> 00:59:35.329
Becky worked tirelessly advocating for changes in both Oregon and Colorado,

1070
00:59:35.630 --> 00:59:39.389
hoping other states would eventually follow. The law addresses one

1071
00:59:39.429 --> 00:59:42.789
of the most frustrating aspects of Christille's case, the delay

1072
00:59:42.840 --> 00:59:46.929
in obtaining digital evidence that could have identified Daniel Krug

1073
00:59:47.010 --> 00:59:51.579
as the person behind Christille's harassment before her murder. Previously,

1074
00:59:51.719 --> 00:59:56.619
Colorado and Oregon had no legal deadline requiring communications companies

1075
00:59:56.639 --> 00:59:59.840
to to respond to search warrants, and responses could take

1076
00:59:59.900 --> 01:00:03.880
weeks or even months. Under Christil's law, social media companies

1077
01:00:04.239 --> 01:00:08.840
must respond to qualifying search warrants within 72 hours, while

1078
01:00:08.920 --> 01:00:12.219
other communications providers have up to five business days. The

1079
01:00:12.260 --> 01:00:17.099
requirements apply to warrants involving investigations of stalking and domestic violence,

1080
01:00:17.480 --> 01:00:22.119
including certain violations of stalking protective orders. Companies that fail

1081
01:00:22.159 --> 01:00:25.469
to comply can be held in contempt. The new warrant

1082
01:00:25.530 --> 01:00:30.010
requirements became law on May 1, 2026. Becky and the

1083
01:00:30.050 --> 01:00:33.260
lawmakers behind Christille's Law hope it will provide a model

1084
01:00:33.300 --> 01:00:38.179
for similar legislation nationwide, turning what investigators learned from Christille's

1085
01:00:38.219 --> 01:00:42.500
murder into protection for other victims of stalking and domestic violence.

1086
01:00:43.400 --> 01:00:46.469
The reason Dan was arrested so quickly was because, once

1087
01:00:46.510 --> 01:00:49.989
a major crime like murder has occurred, communications companies are

1088
01:00:50.030 --> 01:00:52.980
required to comply quickly and If the law would have

1089
01:00:53.019 --> 01:00:55.590
been in effect before her murder, Dan likely would have

1090
01:00:55.619 --> 01:00:58.829
been caught much sooner, and it's devastating to think that

1091
01:00:58.889 --> 01:01:01.809
Christy could still be here with her children and family.

1092
01:01:02.190 --> 01:01:04.349
But I think she'd be happy that this law, with

1093
01:01:04.389 --> 01:01:07.210
her name, will hopefully save other women. I think this

1094
01:01:07.269 --> 01:01:10.630
law is such a great place to start. The phone

1095
01:01:10.670 --> 01:01:13.949
companies got this information to the Broomfield police within an

1096
01:01:14.050 --> 01:01:18.590
hour of her death, and it's just so shocking and upsetting.

1097
01:01:18.610 --> 01:01:21.880
Yeah, it's just really... sad and frustrating that they weren't

1098
01:01:22.010 --> 01:01:24.760
able to get that information, you know, months earlier.

1099
01:01:25.360 --> 01:01:29.699
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Christille was known for her kindness, generosity,

1100
01:01:29.800 --> 01:01:33.119
and infectious laugh. She was brilliant in the sciences and

1101
01:01:33.159 --> 01:01:36.750
built a successful career, but she was equally passionate about

1102
01:01:36.789 --> 01:01:40.110
the arts, especially modern dance. She loved being a mother

1103
01:01:40.130 --> 01:01:42.769
and was so proud of her three children. She poured

1104
01:01:42.809 --> 01:01:45.469
her time and energy into helping them find their passions

1105
01:01:45.530 --> 01:01:48.199
in life. Linda and Lars say the children are doing

1106
01:01:48.239 --> 01:01:50.449
well and the family is doing everything they can to

1107
01:01:50.489 --> 01:01:53.199
give them the life that Christille would have wanted for them.

1108
01:01:53.699 --> 01:01:56.320
They live with Lars Jr. and his wife, but the

1109
01:01:56.360 --> 01:01:59.300
entire family is there to support them. Linda says she

1110
01:01:59.380 --> 01:02:02.159
finds moments of peace when she looks at her grandchildren

1111
01:02:02.260 --> 01:02:06.340
because she sees Christille in them. Christille's family continues to

1112
01:02:06.380 --> 01:02:09.559
gather each year on her birthday, celebrating her with her

1113
01:02:09.679 --> 01:02:13.179
favorite German chocolate cake. On December 14th, they come together

1114
01:02:13.239 --> 01:02:16.269
again to honor her, lighting a candle and raising a

1115
01:02:16.309 --> 01:02:19.469
glass of red wine. And Lars is passing along something

1116
01:02:19.530 --> 01:02:22.869
else Christy loved. In the same garage where they spent

1117
01:02:22.929 --> 01:02:26.849
countless hours working on old cars together, her children are

1118
01:02:26.889 --> 01:02:29.369
now learning to do the same. Lars says they can

1119
01:02:29.409 --> 01:02:32.469
already pick up the same electric screwdriver Christy used and

1120
01:02:32.510 --> 01:02:35.590
tear apart a carburetor. He believes Christy would get a

1121
01:02:35.650 --> 01:02:38.409
kick out of seeing her children carrying on something that

1122
01:02:38.449 --> 01:02:42.559
meant so much to her. Rest in peace, Christille. There

1123
01:02:42.619 --> 01:02:43.940
is a lot to unpack here.

1124
01:02:43.960 --> 01:02:44.400
Yeah.

1125
01:02:44.940 --> 01:02:46.780
I think that you were biting your tongue. There's things

1126
01:02:46.820 --> 01:02:48.829
that you wanted to say, but you were waiting to

1127
01:02:48.869 --> 01:02:49.230
the end.

1128
01:02:49.250 --> 01:02:53.530
Well, it's just a really wild case. The whole, you know,

1129
01:02:54.269 --> 01:02:58.409
stalking thing, there was a lot of thought and planning

1130
01:02:58.469 --> 01:03:00.920
and effort that went into that from Dan. So it's

1131
01:03:01.000 --> 01:03:03.719
really just, you know, over the top, the amount of

1132
01:03:03.800 --> 01:03:05.219
premeditation involved here.

1133
01:03:05.989 --> 01:03:07.989
What would Dan have done if Chris Steele had answered

1134
01:03:08.030 --> 01:03:10.929
the first message from Anthony Holland? And she would have

1135
01:03:10.949 --> 01:03:12.550
been like, yeah, let's wake up.

1136
01:03:13.289 --> 01:03:16.309
Oh, God, I can't even imagine. That would have set

1137
01:03:16.349 --> 01:03:16.769
him off.

1138
01:03:17.010 --> 01:03:19.539
It would have changed everything, right? It would.

1139
01:03:19.579 --> 01:03:21.880
Well, but not necessarily for the better. I mean, he

1140
01:03:21.920 --> 01:03:24.280
might have gone crazy and killed her right then if

1141
01:03:24.719 --> 01:03:26.940
she had done that. But yeah, it's hard to imagine.

1142
01:03:27.409 --> 01:03:29.559
Well, at first I thought that Dan might be sending

1143
01:03:29.599 --> 01:03:33.019
the message to Christille to win her back, to ingratiate

1144
01:03:33.059 --> 01:03:35.699
himself to her rather than murder her. What do you

1145
01:03:35.739 --> 01:03:38.099
think about that? Do you think his intent was to

1146
01:03:38.139 --> 01:03:39.099
try to win her back?

1147
01:03:39.570 --> 01:03:42.670
I mean, maybe that was his initial intent, but if

1148
01:03:42.750 --> 01:03:45.929
it was, it wasn't very well thought through. I mean,

1149
01:03:45.969 --> 01:03:49.110
how are you going to win somebody back by harassing

1150
01:03:49.150 --> 01:03:53.500
them from allegedly another person? I suppose maybe His thought

1151
01:03:53.539 --> 01:03:55.639
was that that would drive her to him like for

1152
01:03:55.699 --> 01:04:00.130
protection or for security. But it just, it didn't seem

1153
01:04:00.150 --> 01:04:03.130
like a very, you know, well thought out plan.

1154
01:04:03.570 --> 01:04:05.969
Christille, and I hope I portrayed her as such, was

1155
01:04:06.010 --> 01:04:08.659
a badass woman. And Dan is just kind of a,

1156
01:04:08.730 --> 01:04:12.079
I don't really, a putz for lack of a better term.

1157
01:04:12.460 --> 01:04:16.099
One point, the detective in the case, Detective Martinez said

1158
01:04:16.440 --> 01:04:20.599
that he thought that Christille was a lot tougher than Dan. Like,

1159
01:04:21.039 --> 01:04:23.739
She didn't need his protection because, you know, she knew

1160
01:04:23.760 --> 01:04:25.420
how to protect herself. And look at all the things

1161
01:04:25.460 --> 01:04:27.039
that she did. You know, she was like, we're going

1162
01:04:27.079 --> 01:04:30.050
to install these security cameras. I'm going to get a gun.

1163
01:04:30.590 --> 01:04:33.510
And she took all these measures and she meticulously kept

1164
01:04:33.550 --> 01:04:36.730
the records. And, you know, Dan was supporting her a

1165
01:04:36.949 --> 01:04:39.469
little bit. But, you know, she was really figuring things

1166
01:04:39.550 --> 01:04:42.380
out on her own. There are so many things about

1167
01:04:42.489 --> 01:04:45.440
this case and Dan that really made me angry. But

1168
01:04:45.500 --> 01:04:47.559
how do you put your children through what he put

1169
01:04:47.599 --> 01:04:50.739
them through? Not just taking away their mother, but making

1170
01:04:50.780 --> 01:04:52.000
them be scared.

1171
01:04:52.199 --> 01:04:52.579
Yeah.

1172
01:04:52.639 --> 01:04:55.260
Knowing that there's this person out there that might be

1173
01:04:55.320 --> 01:04:56.019
watching them.

1174
01:04:56.400 --> 01:04:59.860
Yeah, for months ahead of time, these children were terrified, right?

1175
01:04:59.900 --> 01:05:03.739
Because they think someone is watching their parents every move,

1176
01:05:03.829 --> 01:05:05.650
following them around, threatening them.

1177
01:05:06.429 --> 01:05:09.090
He killed her in the only home that they've ever known.

1178
01:05:09.110 --> 01:05:09.230
Mm-hmm.

1179
01:05:10.010 --> 01:05:12.690
He couldn't let them have one last Christmas together.

1180
01:05:12.750 --> 01:05:12.929
Mm-hmm.

1181
01:05:13.460 --> 01:05:17.139
Forever, they will associate the month of December with her

1182
01:05:17.199 --> 01:05:21.289
mom's murder. Yeah, just awful. And calling Linda, Christille's mom,

1183
01:05:21.309 --> 01:05:22.849
to go check on her. She might have been the

1184
01:05:22.909 --> 01:05:25.289
one to find her, and she didn't find her, but

1185
01:05:25.469 --> 01:05:25.789
she saw her.

1186
01:05:25.809 --> 01:05:26.889
But she did end up seeing her, yeah.

1187
01:05:26.949 --> 01:05:28.449
Yeah, the policeman got there first.

1188
01:05:28.469 --> 01:05:29.849
Yeah, I hadn't even thought of that.

1189
01:05:29.869 --> 01:05:32.190
She'll have those images for the rest of her life.

1190
01:05:32.210 --> 01:05:33.590
Yeah, it's cruel.

1191
01:05:33.719 --> 01:05:36.460
It's so cruel. What do you think about the police

1192
01:05:36.780 --> 01:05:40.619
and their investigation into the stalking incident?

1193
01:05:41.099 --> 01:05:42.539
I mean, it's pretty disappointing.

1194
01:05:42.559 --> 01:05:42.639
Yeah.

1195
01:05:42.929 --> 01:05:44.510
I would say. I don't know how much of it

1196
01:05:44.659 --> 01:05:48.340
was because they didn't put in the effort versus, you know,

1197
01:05:48.460 --> 01:05:50.500
not having that law in place that you talked about.

1198
01:05:50.840 --> 01:05:53.079
Maybe they didn't get the information they needed, but it

1199
01:05:53.139 --> 01:05:55.610
just seems like a bit of a lackluster effort to

1200
01:05:56.110 --> 01:05:58.250
try to find out what was really going on.

1201
01:05:58.429 --> 01:06:01.989
At least one of the telecommunications companies responded and said

1202
01:06:02.110 --> 01:06:05.389
police do have the ability to put, you know, like

1203
01:06:05.429 --> 01:06:09.639
a rush on those people. Yeah. And I don't think

1204
01:06:09.659 --> 01:06:10.860
they did it in this case.

1205
01:06:10.889 --> 01:06:14.130
Yeah, it seems like they didn't treat it as urgently

1206
01:06:14.230 --> 01:06:16.670
as they should have. I can understand that, you know,

1207
01:06:16.690 --> 01:06:19.150
the police are obviously busy. There's a lot going on

1208
01:06:19.309 --> 01:06:22.510
and maybe some things seem less serious than others. But

1209
01:06:22.550 --> 01:06:24.869
the nature of the messages and the fact that there

1210
01:06:24.889 --> 01:06:28.030
were photos, it seemed like this was a very serious

1211
01:06:28.309 --> 01:06:31.840
case of stalking, something that could be a definite threat

1212
01:06:31.900 --> 01:06:34.199
to their safety. So I don't know why they wouldn't

1213
01:06:34.239 --> 01:06:35.699
have taken it more seriously.

1214
01:06:35.900 --> 01:06:37.659
Do you think they have some culpability?

1215
01:06:38.400 --> 01:06:40.539
A little bit, yeah. I mean, if they had taken

1216
01:06:40.579 --> 01:06:43.780
it more seriously, then it's very possible that she would

1217
01:06:43.820 --> 01:06:44.760
still be alive today.

1218
01:06:44.920 --> 01:06:48.260
I do have empathy for them, especially Detective Martinez, because

1219
01:06:48.300 --> 01:06:50.789
he did say, like, I think about her every day.

1220
01:06:51.650 --> 01:06:54.710
I'm sure it weighs on him and the other investigators heavily.

1221
01:06:54.730 --> 01:06:56.949
Do you think Dan loved Christille?

1222
01:06:56.969 --> 01:06:59.530
I don't know if he did at one point, but

1223
01:06:59.570 --> 01:07:02.969
he certainly did not love her at the end. That's

1224
01:07:03.010 --> 01:07:04.750
not how you treat someone you love.

1225
01:07:04.769 --> 01:07:05.489
Right.

1226
01:07:05.690 --> 01:07:09.090
Either obviously killing her, but... Even the stalking thing.

1227
01:07:09.530 --> 01:07:12.369
In the head and then stabbing her in the heart.

1228
01:07:12.389 --> 01:07:12.670
Yeah.

1229
01:07:13.309 --> 01:07:15.230
That seems really unnecessary.

1230
01:07:15.250 --> 01:07:18.389
Yeah, I don't know how someone could do something like that.

1231
01:07:18.469 --> 01:07:20.769
But I was going to say, even if he started

1232
01:07:20.809 --> 01:07:24.139
the stalking thing without the intent of killing her eventually,

1233
01:07:24.199 --> 01:07:26.800
if he started that to try to get her back

1234
01:07:26.840 --> 01:07:30.360
to him, that's just not something, if you truly loved someone,

1235
01:07:30.380 --> 01:07:31.500
that's not what you would do.

1236
01:07:32.280 --> 01:07:34.260
One thing that I hate is that Dan thought he

1237
01:07:34.300 --> 01:07:38.099
was so smart because he did fool the police, partly

1238
01:07:38.139 --> 01:07:41.570
because they didn't have all the information they needed. But

1239
01:07:41.780 --> 01:07:43.780
I hate that he thought he was winning.

1240
01:07:43.909 --> 01:07:45.989
Yeah, it gave him probably a lot of confidence that

1241
01:07:46.010 --> 01:07:48.070
he had gotten away with this stalking thing for so

1242
01:07:48.110 --> 01:07:51.449
long that he probably felt much more confident in his

1243
01:07:51.489 --> 01:07:52.809
ability to get away with murder.

1244
01:07:53.489 --> 01:07:57.010
Watching his police interview was devastating. just repugnant to me.

1245
01:07:57.730 --> 01:08:00.730
His emotions were so over the top. And he was

1246
01:08:00.769 --> 01:08:02.969
just play acting, like I said. He was pointing to

1247
01:08:03.010 --> 01:08:05.710
his badge going, money, money. It was just so gross.

1248
01:08:05.730 --> 01:08:05.889
Yeah.

1249
01:08:05.909 --> 01:08:09.070
Well, it sounds like, again, he was very confident in

1250
01:08:09.130 --> 01:08:11.889
his ability to fool the police. So he probably thought

1251
01:08:11.909 --> 01:08:15.360
he was putting on an Oscar-worthy performance with all this stuff.

1252
01:08:15.880 --> 01:08:19.920
Well, and initially, they did buy his performance, too. So

1253
01:08:20.659 --> 01:08:23.380
I don't know. One thing that surprises me was that

1254
01:08:23.560 --> 01:08:26.939
they issued an arrest warrant for Anthony Holland. They couldn't

1255
01:08:27.000 --> 01:08:29.670
follow through with it because they didn't know where he was.

1256
01:08:30.250 --> 01:08:33.310
But did they have enough evidence against poor Anthony Holland?

1257
01:08:33.329 --> 01:08:35.100
Sure doesn't seem like it.

1258
01:08:35.130 --> 01:08:37.109
No, just because someone had used his name and there

1259
01:08:37.130 --> 01:08:41.560
was text messages. An arrest warrant doesn't.

1260
01:08:41.359 --> 01:08:44.760
Mean that you're going to jail necessarily, right?

1261
01:08:44.779 --> 01:08:47.260
I guess they just wanted to bring him in and

1262
01:08:47.279 --> 01:08:50.600
have him answer questions. He probably would have been cleared quickly.

1263
01:08:50.619 --> 01:08:51.689
Yeah, I would think so too.

1264
01:08:51.899 --> 01:08:53.750
But still, justice for Anthony.

1265
01:08:54.270 --> 01:08:55.890
Well, and if they had, you know, if they had

1266
01:08:56.050 --> 01:08:59.970
located Anthony and arrested him, then again, all of this...

1267
01:09:00.140 --> 01:09:02.619
might have taken care of itself because they would have

1268
01:09:02.659 --> 01:09:05.079
gone deeper in the investigation and hopefully they would have

1269
01:09:05.500 --> 01:09:07.970
discovered that these messages were really coming from David.

1270
01:09:07.989 --> 01:09:10.270
I don't know how they found him so quickly after

1271
01:09:10.409 --> 01:09:11.369
Christia was murdered.

1272
01:09:11.390 --> 01:09:14.250
That is really baffling too. This case reminds me a

1273
01:09:14.310 --> 01:09:18.550
little bit of a recent Netflix true crime documentary we watched.

1274
01:09:18.560 --> 01:09:21.310
I think it was called a toxic love story. And

1275
01:09:21.329 --> 01:09:23.909
it was also about like somebody that made it seem

1276
01:09:23.949 --> 01:09:26.869
like they were being stalked and harassed, but it was

1277
01:09:26.909 --> 01:09:29.789
really coming from, you know, a different person than you

1278
01:09:29.949 --> 01:09:30.649
thought it was.

1279
01:09:30.670 --> 01:09:33.250
That case was so twisty turny.

1280
01:09:33.550 --> 01:09:35.510
It was really crazy, but it just makes me think

1281
01:09:35.550 --> 01:09:38.310
like if you're the police and like kind of these

1282
01:09:38.590 --> 01:09:42.920
over the top type of stalking allegations come in, I'm

1283
01:09:42.979 --> 01:09:45.270
sure they, I'm sure they didn't just take it. for

1284
01:09:45.310 --> 01:09:48.289
granted that it really was Anthony, but you have to

1285
01:09:48.310 --> 01:09:51.689
keep an open mind. I think they thought it was Anthony.

1286
01:09:51.789 --> 01:09:53.930
It sounds like they did, and maybe they should have

1287
01:09:54.729 --> 01:09:57.109
been a little more open-minded that it could have been

1288
01:09:57.149 --> 01:10:00.050
something else. But it just seems like, just based on

1289
01:10:00.069 --> 01:10:02.869
that documentary as well, that you have to really look

1290
01:10:02.890 --> 01:10:06.829
at these situations and say, not necessarily the obvious person

1291
01:10:06.869 --> 01:10:07.949
here that's doing it.

1292
01:10:07.949 --> 01:10:11.180
Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. There's so many things about this case

1293
01:10:11.220 --> 01:10:14.159
that are maddening to me, but I hated, I mean,

1294
01:10:14.180 --> 01:10:17.260
I hate Dan, but the way the messages that he

1295
01:10:17.300 --> 01:10:21.680
was sending, they were also just so gross and obscene

1296
01:10:22.140 --> 01:10:25.340
and like the spelling errors and the poor English, like

1297
01:10:25.460 --> 01:10:29.079
painting Anthony is just like this buffoon.

1298
01:10:29.340 --> 01:10:33.739
Well, yeah. And painting him as a really disgusting, awful person.

1299
01:10:33.770 --> 01:10:33.850
Yeah.

1300
01:10:33.890 --> 01:10:37.529
Yeah. Yeah, it's really not necessary. But again, I think

1301
01:10:37.569 --> 01:10:40.550
Dan thought he was brilliant and thought like, oh, by

1302
01:10:40.590 --> 01:10:43.470
doing this, I'm going to really make it seem realistic

1303
01:10:43.489 --> 01:10:44.449
and believable.

1304
01:10:44.470 --> 01:10:48.539
Won the train advertisement for Christille's birthday. Oh, God, yeah.

1305
01:10:48.760 --> 01:10:53.199
It's just so gross. And having men send her pictures.

1306
01:10:54.399 --> 01:10:56.640
Yeah, I mean, that's... Just gross. Really gross.

1307
01:10:56.819 --> 01:10:59.920
Horrible man. So you don't think that he intended to

1308
01:11:00.239 --> 01:11:03.409
kill Christille initially, but he just was in too deep,

1309
01:11:03.449 --> 01:11:03.970
and that's why.

1310
01:11:04.729 --> 01:11:08.020
You know, I didn't think so. I thought probably his

1311
01:11:08.060 --> 01:11:10.359
intent was to try to get her to come back

1312
01:11:10.399 --> 01:11:13.500
to him for security and protection and things like that.

1313
01:11:13.539 --> 01:11:15.840
But then at the same time, maybe he was laying

1314
01:11:15.880 --> 01:11:18.819
the groundwork to kill her eventually, right? Maybe he was

1315
01:11:19.300 --> 01:11:23.659
putting this out there as evidence that the police could

1316
01:11:23.699 --> 01:11:25.220
look at later and say, oh, it must have been

1317
01:11:25.239 --> 01:11:28.569
this stalker, D'Anthony, that did this. I don't know. I

1318
01:11:29.149 --> 01:11:31.170
would suspect he didn't intend to kill her from the

1319
01:11:31.270 --> 01:11:35.130
beginning and that eventually... He realized it wasn't working.

1320
01:11:35.430 --> 01:11:37.970
But then he was losing control over his marriage and

1321
01:11:38.029 --> 01:11:40.350
his situation. So that might have been enough to take

1322
01:11:40.369 --> 01:11:40.729
him over the top.

1323
01:11:40.770 --> 01:11:42.189
That's what I was going to say. It's guys like that.

1324
01:11:42.210 --> 01:11:45.189
They have to have control. And when they feel that

1325
01:11:45.270 --> 01:11:47.520
control is slipping away from them, that's often when they

1326
01:11:47.529 --> 01:11:48.649
do something extreme.

1327
01:11:49.020 --> 01:11:51.920
Sometimes men will do anything except to be an actual

1328
01:11:51.979 --> 01:11:55.960
good partner to their significant other. I think this is

1329
01:11:56.000 --> 01:11:58.380
the first time that this has ever happened. But I

1330
01:11:58.420 --> 01:11:59.619
watched a 48 Hours, a 20-20, and a Dateline on

1331
01:11:59.659 --> 01:12:03.869
this case. And it was kind of funny because 2020

1332
01:12:03.869 --> 01:12:09.079
and Dateline, it was both their season premiere this year.

1333
01:12:09.100 --> 01:12:11.680
So it was just kind of funny that they all

1334
01:12:11.720 --> 01:12:15.640
did the case. And it was Dateline's 3000th episode.

1335
01:12:15.659 --> 01:12:15.880
Wow.

1336
01:12:16.500 --> 01:12:20.300
I also started to read a book called Inside the House,

1337
01:12:20.340 --> 01:12:25.140
The Murder of Christelle Krug. It was the most inaccurate

1338
01:12:25.319 --> 01:12:28.239
thing I've ever read in my life. And it was

1339
01:12:28.329 --> 01:12:30.449
really kind of stressful because I read about half of

1340
01:12:30.529 --> 01:12:34.279
it and then I realized... that they were contradicting information

1341
01:12:34.319 --> 01:12:36.779
of other things that I was reading. And I'm not

1342
01:12:36.819 --> 01:12:39.319
sure if this book was written by AI or... But

1343
01:12:39.859 --> 01:12:42.180
there was all these... Nothing was accurate in it. It

1344
01:12:42.199 --> 01:12:45.859
was really frustrating. I mention it only to tell people,

1345
01:12:45.960 --> 01:12:49.039
be careful what you're reading out there because AI is

1346
01:12:49.140 --> 01:12:53.819
generating a lot of stuff that is just totally bogus.

1347
01:12:54.159 --> 01:12:58.300
It said she was born in Minneapolis. And there were

1348
01:12:58.340 --> 01:12:59.500
so many inaccuracies.

1349
01:12:59.539 --> 01:12:59.770
They had.

1350
01:13:01.020 --> 01:13:04.100
text messages after text messages, and they were made up.

1351
01:13:04.500 --> 01:13:06.989
And it was just bizarre to me how wrong this was.

1352
01:13:07.000 --> 01:13:09.979
Oh, that's really frustrating and disappointing. And it's probably going

1353
01:13:10.000 --> 01:13:10.779
to happen more and more.

1354
01:13:11.340 --> 01:13:14.449
True. Well, let us know what you think about this case.

1355
01:13:14.750 --> 01:13:17.090
Something that I keep thinking about doing, I know so

1356
01:13:17.130 --> 01:13:22.050
many women have been through stalking situations. And I'm thinking

1357
01:13:22.090 --> 01:13:25.109
about doing like a listener episode. People want to share

1358
01:13:25.170 --> 01:13:27.050
their stories because I think that's the best way to

1359
01:13:27.149 --> 01:13:31.010
educate people is when people are vulnerable and share their stories.

1360
01:13:31.069 --> 01:13:32.899
So let us know what you think about that and

1361
01:13:32.949 --> 01:13:40.739
if you would be willing to share your story. Well,

1362
01:13:40.779 --> 01:13:43.779
I know that you enjoy doing this case together today,

1363
01:13:43.920 --> 01:13:45.760
but I know there is somewhere that you would rather

1364
01:13:45.819 --> 01:13:46.420
be right now.

1365
01:13:46.899 --> 01:13:47.199
Is there?

1366
01:13:47.520 --> 01:13:47.800
Yeah.

1367
01:13:48.020 --> 01:13:48.979
There's nowhere I would rather be.

1368
01:13:48.979 --> 01:13:50.380
Really? What did you just tell me?

1369
01:13:50.399 --> 01:13:51.659
I don't know what you're trying to get at here.

1370
01:13:51.680 --> 01:13:54.119
You're like, we should install a TV in this room.

1371
01:13:54.220 --> 01:13:55.180
Right behind you.

1372
01:13:55.279 --> 01:13:58.180
Yeah. So when I'm presenting the case, you can watch.

1373
01:13:58.199 --> 01:14:01.720
There's a Tigers game on, which it seems very coincidental

1374
01:14:01.779 --> 01:14:04.399
that we always record right at the time that the

1375
01:14:04.439 --> 01:14:05.000
Tigers are playing.

1376
01:14:05.039 --> 01:14:08.329
We tend to record on the weekends, in the afternoon. So, yeah.

1377
01:14:08.350 --> 01:14:12.069
I guess it's maybe not that coincidental, but yeah, I

1378
01:14:12.090 --> 01:14:14.689
don't know. I'm not very happy with the Tigers right now, though,

1379
01:14:14.770 --> 01:14:16.810
so I am okay with missing today's game.

1380
01:14:17.130 --> 01:14:21.649
Not very happy. After every game, you come find me

1381
01:14:21.670 --> 01:14:24.470
and you're like, I hate the Tigers. The Tigers are

1382
01:14:24.510 --> 01:14:26.659
the worst team in baseball. I'm so tired of it.

1383
01:14:26.670 --> 01:14:28.920
Well, they just give you this false hope and then

1384
01:14:28.979 --> 01:14:32.000
they tear it away from you. It's just a constant

1385
01:14:32.100 --> 01:14:35.159
theme over and over. Not every year with the Tigers.

1386
01:14:35.500 --> 01:14:38.020
So I am going to give you an opportunity right

1387
01:14:38.079 --> 01:14:42.050
now as we are heading into fall. We're in September.

1388
01:14:42.060 --> 01:14:42.310
Mm-hmm.

1389
01:14:42.960 --> 01:14:44.560
What do you think is going to happen this year

1390
01:14:44.720 --> 01:14:48.310
with the Lions and the University of Michigan? Are they

1391
01:14:48.359 --> 01:14:50.350
also going to pull the hope away from you?

1392
01:14:50.369 --> 01:14:54.289
Well, they usually do as well. But, you know, I

1393
01:14:55.050 --> 01:14:56.689
don't know. I have to be honest with you. I

1394
01:14:56.710 --> 01:15:00.189
have not been keeping up on what's going on with

1395
01:15:00.310 --> 01:15:03.399
football yet because I just have a hard time getting

1396
01:15:03.420 --> 01:15:05.420
invested in football until baseball's over.

1397
01:15:05.500 --> 01:15:05.840
Right.

1398
01:15:06.310 --> 01:15:07.850
I like to think the Lions are going to have

1399
01:15:07.890 --> 01:15:11.529
a very good year. Michigan football, probably not as much.

1400
01:15:11.829 --> 01:15:12.069
Really?

1401
01:15:12.109 --> 01:15:12.810
I've said that.

1402
01:15:12.869 --> 01:15:13.149
Yeah.

1403
01:15:13.210 --> 01:15:16.180
No, I've said that before. But I am hopeful. I

1404
01:15:16.189 --> 01:15:17.779
think the Lions are going to have a good year.

1405
01:15:17.800 --> 01:15:20.279
I think they're going to make the playoffs. Michigan, probably

1406
01:15:20.319 --> 01:15:22.720
not as much just because of the new coaching situation.

1407
01:15:22.779 --> 01:15:24.439
I don't know a whole lot about what's going on

1408
01:15:24.479 --> 01:15:25.079
with Michigan football.

1409
01:15:25.100 --> 01:15:26.020
Do you know who took over as coach?

1410
01:15:26.079 --> 01:15:28.590
I don't even know that. So, yeah, I would imagine

1411
01:15:28.600 --> 01:15:30.850
it'll take them a year or two to get their

1412
01:15:30.869 --> 01:15:31.390
feet under them.

1413
01:15:31.880 --> 01:15:33.739
So if you were a betting man, and you kind

1414
01:15:33.779 --> 01:15:36.489
of are, how much money would you put on the

1415
01:15:36.529 --> 01:15:39.010
Detroit Lions to win the Super Bowl?

1416
01:15:39.350 --> 01:15:42.029
Oh, to win the Super Bowl? I don't think they're

1417
01:15:42.050 --> 01:15:42.909
going to win the Super Bowl.

1418
01:15:44.090 --> 01:15:46.140
Oh, so you're not... Don't you sometimes put a bet

1419
01:15:46.199 --> 01:15:47.119
on them, just a few.

1420
01:15:47.000 --> 01:15:49.520
Dollars, just for fun? Yeah, just for fun. I might

1421
01:15:49.579 --> 01:15:50.420
do that as well.

1422
01:15:50.439 --> 01:15:50.960
Well, how much?

1423
01:15:51.699 --> 01:15:55.079
Oh, I don't know. I mean, $ 10. $ 10. But the

1424
01:15:55.180 --> 01:15:57.539
odds will be like, you know, it'll be like 10

1425
01:15:57.539 --> 01:15:59.590
to 1 or 20 to 1 that they're going to

1426
01:15:59.600 --> 01:16:02.550
win the Super Bowl. So a $ 10 bet could pay

1427
01:16:02.609 --> 01:16:03.949
off a couple hundred dollars, maybe.

1428
01:16:03.970 --> 01:16:10.090
Yeah. So this episode, with all the cameras and they

1429
01:16:10.109 --> 01:16:12.930
put the cameras on our house, when I was researching,

1430
01:16:12.949 --> 01:16:15.710
I said to you, I was like, our cameras, I

1431
01:16:15.729 --> 01:16:19.680
don't know, should we upgrade our cameras? And you did.

1432
01:16:19.689 --> 01:16:19.770
Yeah.

1433
01:16:20.300 --> 01:16:24.060
I did, yeah. Well, our cameras weren't working very well before,

1434
01:16:24.140 --> 01:16:24.939
like a couple of them were.

1435
01:16:24.960 --> 01:16:25.960
But now they are, so don't stalk us.

1436
01:16:25.960 --> 01:16:28.739
Very intermittent, yeah. So now we have got the camera

1437
01:16:28.760 --> 01:16:32.560
setup is outstanding. New cameras, they're really nice cameras too.

1438
01:16:32.840 --> 01:16:35.119
Yeah, where you didn't tell me how much you spent.

1439
01:16:35.199 --> 01:16:37.399
I don't need to know. But aren't they solar, which

1440
01:16:37.439 --> 01:16:38.479
I thought was interesting?

1441
01:16:38.560 --> 01:16:41.640
Yeah, two of the cameras have a little solar panel,

1442
01:16:41.739 --> 01:16:43.600
so they don't have to plug into the wall, which

1443
01:16:43.659 --> 01:16:45.840
is really nice because our old cameras... You had to

1444
01:16:45.880 --> 01:16:46.739
plug into the wall.

1445
01:16:46.760 --> 01:16:48.539
And there was cords like in the yard.

1446
01:16:48.560 --> 01:16:51.119
That was weird. I hated that. So yeah, they're really,

1447
01:16:51.140 --> 01:16:54.350
they're pretty cool. The brand that I went with is Reolink.

1448
01:16:54.390 --> 01:16:56.250
And the thing I liked about them is you don't

1449
01:16:56.270 --> 01:16:59.470
have to pay like a monthly subscription, like with Ring,

1450
01:16:59.689 --> 01:17:02.189
like the doorbell cameras, you have to pay every month.

1451
01:17:02.250 --> 01:17:04.270
And it drives me crazy. So I'm like, I just

1452
01:17:04.310 --> 01:17:06.399
want a camera on my house to be able to

1453
01:17:06.439 --> 01:17:08.319
be secure. I don't want to have to pay a

1454
01:17:08.359 --> 01:17:09.060
subscription fee.

1455
01:17:09.739 --> 01:17:12.260
I did not have the apps on my phone, and

1456
01:17:12.319 --> 01:17:14.319
I recently put them on my phone because I was

1457
01:17:14.380 --> 01:17:16.680
inspired by Christille. I would just text you. I'd be like,

1458
01:17:16.739 --> 01:17:19.619
who's at the front door? Or whatever. So now I

1459
01:17:19.659 --> 01:17:22.260
have access, and literally the only thing you see on

1460
01:17:22.319 --> 01:17:24.899
our cameras is moths flying by.

1461
01:17:24.920 --> 01:17:28.220
We really don't live in a very exciting— not a lot

1462
01:17:28.260 --> 01:17:29.060
happens around here.

1463
01:17:29.100 --> 01:17:29.729
Not a lot happens.

1464
01:17:29.739 --> 01:17:32.810
But, hey, something does happen. We will be prepared.

1465
01:17:33.470 --> 01:17:36.430
I want to thank everyone who leaves us messages after

1466
01:17:36.689 --> 01:17:39.670
they listen to an episode. Engaging with us on social

1467
01:17:39.710 --> 01:17:43.489
media is a really good way to boost our algorithm

1468
01:17:43.590 --> 01:17:45.109
and let other people find us.

1469
01:17:45.130 --> 01:17:47.930
Yeah, and you can leave comments on Spotify or you

1470
01:17:47.949 --> 01:17:50.869
can leave a review on Apple Podcasts as well. And

1471
01:17:50.989 --> 01:17:53.569
like you said, it really does help raise our visibility.

1472
01:17:53.609 --> 01:17:56.350
So we truly appreciate it. And if you'd like to

1473
01:17:56.409 --> 01:17:59.220
support us, another way to do that is by joining

1474
01:17:59.319 --> 01:18:04.029
our Patreon, patreon.com slash lovemerrykill. We have just one tier.

1475
01:18:04.069 --> 01:18:06.539
We keep it simple. It's just $ 5 a month. And

1476
01:18:06.600 --> 01:18:09.600
for that, you get early ad-free access and you get

1477
01:18:09.619 --> 01:18:11.039
a monthly bonus episode.

1478
01:18:11.460 --> 01:18:14.199
Thanks so much for listening. We love you guys. Until

1479
01:18:14.239 --> 01:18:14.770
next time.

1480
01:18:14.949 --> 01:18:15.710
Don't kill your wife.

1481
01:18:15.770 --> 01:18:16.689
And don't kill your husband.

1482
01:18:16.989 --> 01:18:17.369
Don't kill.

1483
01:18:17.390 --> 01:18:20.350
Why do I always say don't? Don't kill your husband.

1484
01:18:20.369 --> 01:18:21.229
Is that better?

1485
01:18:21.609 --> 01:18:22.050
Much better.

1486
01:18:28.020 --> 01:18:40.470
Thank you. Thank you.
